Comments:BIO 1305 - Dr. Harvill is a very good professor, not to mention, he's funny lol. His teaching ability is pretty good and his lectures are usually pretty straightforward and can be entertaining. One thing that I like about his teaching is that he doesn't teach directly off of the PowerPoint slides, he instead adds detail and even gives visual examples of concepts. In terms of homework, there wasn't necessarily any homework assigned, however, we were given modules and quizzes that were on Pearson. They usually weren't too bad and only took about 1-2 hours to complete both of them combined. The tests in my opinion, which will vary from person to person were not that hard. If you read the book before coming to class and pay attention to the lectures you will be fine. What I liked to do was read the textbook before class, take notes with the PowerPoint, and then review the material later in the week (this class honestly didn't take up too much of my time). The tests are mostly multiple choice and have a few FRQs at the end, however, they are not too difficult. When I say this, that doesn't mean not studying, my perception of the test's difficulty is solely based on the fact that I put in the time and effort into studying and learning the material. I would recommend Dr. Harvill to anyone taking BIO 1305!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - harvill is such a chill and funny guy. i didn't do as well as i wanted because i was still adjusting to college but my grade does not reflect his teaching abilities. his lectures are SO boring, so if you don't attend his class make sure to fully absorb the textbook. his tests are very straightforward, none of those BS AP Bio test questions. he has these online quizzes on pearson that you have to do and he doesn't really remind you about them, so it's your job to know the deadlines. don't miss out on doing these like i did because they're free points. i would really encourage you to get to know him. i've heard he's really good about helping you with future opportunities if you know him well.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:BIO 1305 - I loved Dr. Harvill! He had such a good personality and was great at conveying the material in a way that made sense to me. I will say that if you didn't take ap bio or this is your first time taking a higher level bio class definitely go to SI and read the textbook because he goes pretty fast in lectures. The textbook has practice tests for each chapter and lets you make a cumulative test with all the chapters you want so those were super helpful for studying. All the quizzes were take home and he drops your lowest 4 or 6 (i dont remember) so you have a lot of opportunities to boost your grade. the tests have a small curve and he doesn't give minuses so your grade should be ok. There's also completion hw assignments that if you just do them it's an automatic 10/10 in the gradebook and he gives extra credit if you make a sign for one of the football or basketball games. All around he is a really good professor and I'd 100% recommend him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 - Take him! He is a really nice professor outside of class. Most times, I zoned out during the lecture, but if you read the textbook, you will be fine. But seriously, READ THE TEXTBOOK. That is the only way you can pass this class. His quizzes can be a bit challenging on Pearson, but they are not that bad. We had two quizzes per chapter. I went to his office hours once, and he was helpful. He has three exams and a final. The first two exams were a mix of multiple choice and free response, and the last was just multiple choice. The exams were usually 50 to 60 questions, and they were a bit challenging but not too bad. If you are ready to read the textbook, you will ace this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4333 - BEST CLASS AT BAYLOR. if you're looking for an upper level bio credit, THIS IS IT. the class consists of traveling to the waco wetlands and is only available in the summer. we help inform elementary and middle school kids during their field trip and make stations for them. it is immersive and a unique experience. you get to teach kids and help them with hands on science. Dr. Harvill was super sweet and always kept us engaged. i was so sad when the class ended because i truly have not experienced something this enriching at baylor. we also helped on a research project and it was super easy. there is no homework outside the class since it is 3 hours every day. TAKE THIS CLASS  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1306 - If there is one thing I knew going into college level Biology with Harvill it is READ. THE. TEXTBOOK. No matter if you don't think you have the time, make time to read it! You will learn information in his lectures if you give your undivided attention, but reading the textbook will ensure you've got the information down. I wouldn't recommend taking notes while reading, since SI will help with that but seriously READ THE TEXTBOOK!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 , 1306 - Dr.Harvil is definitely one of the better biology professors that Baylor has. Exams make are around 50-55 questions with a free response. Definitely need to read the textbook in order to do well on the exams. His lectures can be boring sometimes but he tends to crack jokes from time to time. Overall a solid choice for 1305 and 1306.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1306 - I will first off say, Harvill is such a wonderful person. I feel like I could share my entire life story and he would stand there and listen. If you build a personal connection with him, he will want to know how you're doing. While I would say he's an awesome person, it doesn't make him such a great professor. His slides and lectures are not as beneficial as reading the textbook, but he does give some pointers here and there that have been beneficial for either exams or fun facts to keep you somewhat interested in what is being discussed. Additionally, he does do a pretty decent curve at the end of the semester to boost your grade. I had a C+ going into the final, did well even before a curve, and ended with a B+. If you want to take Harvill, you HAVE to put in the effort, either in 1305 or 1306, to see the results you want. TL;DR - Great person, not so good prof, read the textbook since exams are sometimes specific regarding the TB.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305 - Dr. Harvill is a very entertaining professor. He is very passionate about biology and his students. His workload is very low, with weekly homework and quizzes. His tests rely a lot on your ability to absorb everything in the PowerPoints and its essential you read over the textbook. His SI was amazing, but she won’t be here after this semester. He has 3 exams, each 20% and a final worth 30% while his homework and quizzes are the final 10%. The exam load isn’t too terrible as long as you start learning early so its not an overwhelming amount of information. The course is essentially AP bio all over again. His final was stressful studying for, but ended up being extremely easy. It is 50% cumulative and 50% the last two chapters you learn after Thanksgiving break. Definitely taking him again next semester.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305 - Dr. Harvill is a pretty good. I didn't take AP bio, and it went pretty well. the reason my grade is pretty low was because of my first test...he doesn't drop or replace an exam, but if you do well on the others you will be fine. In class, he really justs reads off the slides and sort of explains, which can help especially if you are a visual learner. However, his SI, Andi Zorba, is amazing, so definitely go, and if not then definitely do the worksheets to get an idea on what to really focus on for exams. Again, exams are pretty straightforward...they are straight out of the powerpoint/figures. (The book is a lot, but if you learn best through words then definitely read it, if not I would say watch the videos and understand the powerpoint slides). Overall, good professor.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:BIO 1301 - I love this man so much and he is such a fun professor with very fair exams and little to no homework other than online quizzes every week. I doubt you'll have more fun with any other bio prof, highly recommend!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306/4422/4333 - There's no doubt Dr.Harvill loves his teaching and career, and his exams are never there to trip you up. I had three classes with him throughout my university career. Especially 4422 and 4333, which are two very interesting courses. If you need an easy advanced placement biology course, take it. He certainly gave me a lot of help and encouragement, one of the best biology professors at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - TAKE BIO 1406 WITH DR. HARVILL! Whether or not you have any interest in research, 1406 is one of the most fun classes I’ve ever taken! You’ll also have less work and stress than if you were to take BIO 1306 + 1106. Dr. Harvill is so kind and funny and is a fantastic person to get to know. In order to succeed, you will need to be diligent about reading the textbook. But if you stay on top of your work and studying music you’re almost guaranteed an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - He’s alright. Read the textbook and go to si and you’ll be fine. His lectures leave you with absolutely nothing helpful  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - He's a pretty reasonable professor. you wont learn much from his lectures, but everything straight out of the book so as long as you read the book you should be okay for exams. the exams are all MCQ and occasionally there will be short answer section but its not bad at all. just need to read and memorize. pretty similar to AP bio.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1406 - *If you're pre-med, you want to take Dr. Harvill* His 1305 class was a lot like AP Bio. His spring semester Bio course is more challenging in terms of content, but he helps his students out a lot. You will have to put the work in, but it is possible to get through with an A. In the spring he runs a Biology course that includes creating a research project (Bio 1406), so if you are looking for an opportunity to get introduced to what research might look like then I would recommend taking him in the fall and getting to know him well, so that he will know what type of student you are as far as letting you into 1406 in the spring. Dr. Harvill develops a relationship with his students like no other professor I've met (including hosting dinners at his house for students who stay in Waco over fall/thanksgiving/easter break). Take the time to get to know him and go to his office hours, trust me you won't regret it! Best wishes!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - He was definitely more difficult than my 1305 professor who no longer teaches at Baylor. He never responds to emails and the only time to approach him is after class. I think he is one of the better ones, but his tests were absolutely terrible if you didn't know the contents of the book super well. His lectures were interesting and I loved listening to him not they were absolutely irrelevant to the test materia and his online homework system on MasteringBiology was often due at really weird and random times and dates and he would give no heads up so a lot of people (I included) would miss and get 0% on. He curved the class pretty heavily at the end I ended with a B at least so I'd say his class is an easy B if you put in effort but you have to sell your soul for an A. Idk how the kids in front of me did it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 1305 & 1306 - This man might be the most "meh" professor at Baylor. He lectures like a clown, but not in a funny way. The lectures honestly got me nowhere, and I found myself having to learn the material entirely outside of class. He managed to boil a very interesting subject like biology into nothing but a soulless labor of memorizing 10,000 flashcards to know the obscure information he pulls out of BF Egypt for the tests. That being said, he is a genuinely nice person who is passionate about his students and biology as a whole. Very highly recommended if you're a pre-med student, as his class is made up almost entirely of pre-meds each year. Don't expect this class to ignite your passion for Bio or anything, but he's at least better than some of the other professors in his department.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - Dr. Harvill is AMAZING! Not only is super passionate about Biology and his students, he is fun, funny, and is super helpful! His lectures are kind of pointless, but just read the textbook and go to his SI sessions and you will be golden! His SI are the best and they are going to set you up for success on the test! Take him to get the easy A in Bio!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305/1306 - These classes are a breeze if you read the textbook. Harvill just puts up slides and lectures them, but you need the details from the textbook, not just what he presents in class. That being said, paying attention in class can be beneficial because he will emphasize the points and strongly hint they are on the tests. If you are someone who has to read something to learn, just stick to the textbook and take Harvill. He is such a nice man, and his classes are easy.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - TAKE DR HARVILL!! This man is beyond compassionate about teaching biology, he is very engaging in lectures and is super animated. The tests are rough but fair. Just read the book and go to office hours. Plus he also gives simple quick homework/quizzes and tell really easy assignments that boost/cushion the grade. The class is worth it I swear and his SI is really good at bridging the gaps and explaining anything that may not make sense.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305/1306 - A great professor to introduce you to Baylor's Bio program. Makes you put in the work, but isn't overbearing (relatively) in terms of information you need to know/take notes on. Not a great lecturer, but supplements this by putting everything you need to know in his powerpoints posted on canvas OR referencing where you should read the book. Online quizzes are annoying but helpful for test. Is also a very sociable guy that is willing to help you out if you ask for it, just might take a second to reach him due to his large class sizes.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Harvill is actually a really fun guy. If you get to know him outside of class, he'll remember you and will make sure you pass the class. I didn't really take the time to know him because I never went to office hours or anything but he was always super sweet to me. His class is relatively easy. It's made of 3 unit exams, a few quizzes (3 I believe), HW assignments which are the mastering biology quizzes, and some extra credit he gives out. The Unit 2 quiz for photosynthesis and cellular respiration was not as hard as you might think it will be so don't stress too bad. His tests overall are around 50-75 mcqs and he sometimes has frqs. The final was pretty easy. he says it's 50% new stuff and 50% old. the old stuff are just repeated questions from past tests so GO LOOK AT YOUR OLD TESTS!! I would say take him, I'm taking him again for 1406.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 4333 - Take BIO 4333 if you like teaching middle school kids but it difficult to get into if you haven't had Dr. Harvill already since it's instructor permit only. The class is basically teaching middle school kids science by completing a research project. Once a week you meet with the class over zoom and then the other two days you work on lesson prep for the class. There is limited outside class work (only a 1 min weekly reflection video each week) but there are times where you go to the school to drop off supplies and other stuff. Dr Harvill only takes 27 students each time and takes students he knows can research well. If you haven't talked to Dr. Harvill more than 5 times you chance of getting in very slim, but if you get the opportunity it is an easy A and the workload is fun and enjoyable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill really enjoys what he teaches. With that being said, I found lectures to be a tad bit boring since he would just read off his powerpoints. He did include extra information about contextual outside stuff, but for the most part I did not mind skipping class and studying on my own to do well. The powerpoints are helpful, but I would just say take really good notes on the textbook and go to the test review SI to make an A on the tests. Make sure to look over the study reviews that the SI gives and you will be golden. Some tests are harder than others depended on the unit, but all of them were multiple choice except maybe some labeling. The only HW involved was doing Mastering Bio online which were due each Saturday. I would take Harvill again for next semester because his tests are good if you study and put in a little effort.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Great Biology teacher! Dr. Harvill is just a nerd for Biology and all things science! He is very approachable and wants to form connections with his students! His lectures sometimes do not give the most in-depth look at materials in his class, so make sure to read the text book. Also, he mostly text on application concepts from the textbook, so mostly study those things. Attend his SI sessions as those will be your best friends. Overall, great biology professor and highly recommend taking him.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 - All of the biology professors are pretty bad. He’s definitely one of the better ones. With that being said I barely passed his class, his tests were very hard. Definitely study. I’m taking him for BIO 1306 tho haha  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO1306 - Dr. Harvill's class is great! I had him for 1305 and 1306 and did well in both. You definitely need to study a lot; memorizing his powerpoints and reading the book helped me. Tests were all multiple choice, usually with a diagram to label at the end. Not really any homework other than some online quizzes, which were nice grade bumps. Solid class! Not too bad if you work hard!! Would recommend!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Harvill is fairly average when it comes to professors. HE LOVES FISH (seriously, if you go to his Bible study and talk about fish you'll automatically be on his good side). He also has a super dry, condescending sense of humor which is actually pretty funny unless it's directed at you. Overall, he's pretty unapproachable unless you're one of his favorites and his lecture skills are just...average. That being said, I 100% recommend taking him for BIO 1306. Why? If you're even fairly decent at memorizing, his tests are a complete breeze. I never paid attention in class. A couple days before his tests, I would memorize the powerpoint slides that he uploads to Canvas, rewatch his lectures on 2x speed, and memorize the list of diagrams that he gives you. That's literally it. I will say, though, that his last test and final suddenly had a couple questions that were directly from lecture--I think he's starting to catch onto the fact that no one pays attention to him. I heard that SI was good for 1305. I can't speak on that since I didn't take him for 1305, but I can say that Andie was fairly disorganized for 1306. Half of the time she would say the wrong thing, only to be corrected by a student and have to stumble her way through a correction. My advice is show up and don't pay too much attention to her, because you'll just confuse yourself. Make sure you go, though, because her practice tests and review sessions are so clutch!! For the final, all I did was memorize the study guide she gives us and I aced it. Tip: Avoid interacting with Harvill individually (whether via email or in person). He WILL make fun of you behind your back. I have heard him trash students to his SI's on multiple occasions, even for things like asking a question that he deemed "stupid".  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Lectures were honestly no help, I only went because I don’t like skipping classes. He is a sweet man and honestly liked his sense of humor, but he just needs to upgrade his teaching method. His SI, on the other hand, is amazinggg please go to his SI. Please read the textbook and do things like quizlets to do well on his tests. Also, stay on top of quizzes on Pearson, they’re due every Saturday and really easy to miss.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 1306 - Dr. Harvill is very personable and kind. However his teaching is not it. SI and the book are how to succeed in the class, not attending lectures. His lectures are literally pointless in regards to the test. He does not have a drop test or anything like that so the grading is a bit unforgiving. Memorizing the book is the way to do well, definitely explore other options for bio if possible but his class is doable just not optimal unless you like teaching yourself. He also is not good with email. He also really likes fish  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! probably one of the worst professors I have had. Never responds to emails and his lectures have nothing to do with the information on the test. He also is quick to accuse students of academic dishonest when they arent doing anything. Tests are super hard overall terrible and worst experience while taking him. Comments:1306 - I enjoyed Dr. Harvill's 1306 class. However, his lectures tend to stray pretty far off topic and are not very material focused, usually mostly stories and real life examples. For me this style of lecture was difficult to stay engaged in but I know others that enjoyed it. His tests aren't too bad but they are pretty much your only grade, so you have to do well on them to be successful in the class. He can be hard to get ahold of by email and is sometimes unreliable with availability and communication. Overall though his class was not bad and he is definitely an easier option for 1306.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - Took him back in 2018 over the summer. Most of the lectures were consumed by jokes and stories. That is fine if you are able to teach yourself the material. The exams were tough being that we had no quizzes to gauge our understanding prior to committing to possibly sacrificing 20% of our cumulative average. We did have mastering biology assignments online, however I personally benefit from being in a testing environment to truly get a grasp of what I know i.e., quizzes. He is a nice guy who is really funny and passionate about the material, but his delivery of said material falls short. I wish I could have liked him like a lot of these reviews do, but personally it was not a good fit.   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1402 - I had Harvil for both Bio 1 and 2 Freshman year. He is amazing please take him!! He keeps his lectures entertaining and his exams and workload is very reasonable. Make sure you read and study the textbook in order to do well on the exams not just his lectures. Harvil always advanced my curiosity and love for bio he's the best! Comments:1305 - Dr.Harvill is an ok teacher. His lectures are based off of the slides and so if you miss a class, you can easily catch up. His tests are purely based off your textbook, so take stellar notes and read like your heart depends on it. His SI this semester was amazing, and so I think taking advantage of his SI's are my biggest tip+ ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSIONS. hard work will get you an A in his class. Start off strong, because getting back from a low test score can be pretty hard in his class. The textbook is your holy grail for this class, use it wisely!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - He rounds your grade and curves the exam. I didn't go to SI much and skipped all of his lectures except the first two where I pretty much slept in the lecture hall. I studied for the exams two days before and I found the 1st two exams to be very easy. Genetics Exam was very difficult at least for me. Practice the problems that the SI gives you for this unit and you are basically golden. Final exam is VERY EASY. He reuses questions and they are very basic. Take Harvill if you love memorization and knowing the FACTS (Literally in his syllabus). Mastering bio is easy so don't forget to do them. If you aren't good at memorization, don't take the class. If you are looking for application and are passionate to learn, don't take Harvill. It will be a disappointment. Other than that, he is cool a professor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO1305 - I would definitely recommend taking Harvill! He’s not an exceptional teacher or anything, but I would say he’s the best option from what I’ve heard. He is a really friendly and funny guy! Quizzes are so easy! The tests are detailed but not bad at all in my opinion. Yes, I studied A LOT, but I’ll be honest I didn’t really read the textbook much and I did great on the tests. Number one tip is go to SI!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 - Harvill is ok. He makes a lot of silly jokes and is enthusiastic about biology but he's not too personable and isn't the best with emails. His lectures are very skippable and I recommend going to SI instead. Quizzes are way too easy (answers are ALWAYS available online) while his tests have all sorts of random details from the book and are weighted way too strongly. Overall, an A in the course is possible even if you never took AP Bio, but just be ready to put in some work.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - Dr. Harvill a really nice guy. He makes funny examples in lectures to remember stuff which actually helped me on tests. His lectures are pretty standard, and what's good is that his notes are fill in the blank, which makes it SO much easier to know what to read for. If I had to say one thing, I'd say go to SI. The SI was amazing and was really helpful, and you'll pretty much know what'll be on the test just by going. His first test is pretty average, you should do well enough on it. The second test was VERY difficult for me, and the third test was pretty easy. He has MasteringBio homework which can be tedious at times, but it's easy enough and will bump your grade up a bit. What I like about Dr. Harvill is that his tests are pretty standard and the SI will tell you what the test questions will most likely be. Overall, a good person and a good professor.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - No idea what the hype is about lol. I got an A in Bio 2, but what a nightmare Bio 1 was in this class. Extremely boring and you really need to learn every detail in the textbook to do well. In-class powerpoints were never posted, which made everything much harder. SI was great though.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:BIO 1306 - Dr. Harvill is ok, nothing special as far as teaching ability. He's clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about bio, but I never found the lectures to match up with the tests much. You absolutely have to read the textbook to get an A on the tests- the pictures and diagrams are really important too, he'll sometimes make questions based off of the randomest things that don't seem significant and he didn't mention in class. Go to SI for sure, that is what saved my grade. He tries to joke around in class but I never thought he was all that friendly, and sometimes never responded to emails.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1306 - Dr. Harvill is nice enough. Its a large lecture straight from powerpoint. He tends to crack dad jokes every once in a while. I never found him very friendly in person. You have MasteringBio for every chapter and three (3) exams plus a cumulative final. I found it not too difficult to make an A, but SI is a must. The sessions and practice tests are the best way to learn the material. If you work decently hard and go to SI, you should make an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Dr. Harvill is very nice, although I do not understand why his rating is as high as it is. His lectures are a very poor representation of the exams. if you don’t understand every page of the book front and back or can’t attend SI sessions, good luck. I emailed him numerous times regarding my grade and meeting with him and never received an email back. His lectures are very boring and do not contribute to learning.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO 1305/1306 - Dr. Harvill is a friendly and nice professor. His exams are straight from the book with no variation. Its usually 50 multiple choice questions with a couple fill in the blank questions at the end. There are online "quizzes" which are just MasteringBio assignments which answers can easily be looked up. Compared to what I heard regarding other BIO 1 and 2 professors he is the one to choose.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 - I enjoyed his class but it could get pretty boring sometimes, especially after 75 minutes. The most important thing for this class is to go to SI. The practice tests are extremely helpful and he often pulls questions off these for his actual tests. There were weekly online homework assignments that weren't too difficult and only took about an hour, but easy to forget about until the night they're due. Overall, probably one of the better intro bio teachers.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - BIO 1305- Harvill is a funny guy and such a dad but like I didn't love him. Honestly, you don't need to go to his classes, it's just a huge lecture and you do all your work and learning outside of class. His tests come straight from the book I had an amazing SI and that's why I stayed in his class for 1302. He doesn't teach the class is boring but an A is definitely attainable. He doesn't drop any test but drops two lowest quiz grades. If you are looking to learn from the teacher, don't take him. If you are hard-working an can memorize, then it's an A. He doesn't curve tests but they're all multiple choice and one free response  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1406/4333/3V90 - Dr. Harvill is by far my favorite professor at Baylor, as you can tell by all the classes I have taken with him. Bio 1 is very doable and you can do well on his exams if you read the book! He always has an amazing SI as well and those reviews and practice tests are half the work in preparing for the exam. I have made an A in all 4 of his classes and you will not regret having him as a professor. He is such a great person and it shows through his work, so don\'t be afraid to ask him for help when you need it and be sure to reach out about research opportunities because he ALWAYS has one going on. Don\'t miss out! Take Harvill!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4333 - This class was probably one of my favorite classes I have ever taken at Baylor. Basically what we did was we facetimed a middle school class once a week and helped lead them through a basic research project. It was honestly so much fun interacting with the kids and I really loved having them come to Baylor at the end of the semester to present their work. They were so excited! I would highly recommend taking this class because it is actually super fun, there is no homework (other than preparing for next session) no test, and no final. Dr. Harvill is literally the best and he is so passionate about this class and will take any criticism in order to improve. I took Dr. Harvill freshman year and he is one of my favorite teachers at Baylor because he is very nice and very approachable. DEFINITELY take him if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Harvill is one of the best professors in the biology department. Take him for 1305/1306 if you can. I could only get him for 1306, but his class is a cakewalk compared to my 1305 (Kang). Lectures are useless but he takes attendance. Everyone just does homework for other classes. Mastering biology is annoying but not too bad, should help your grade slightly. He doesn't drop any test grades. First test is not so hard, second test is very difficult, third is easy. His SI is excellent and he actually works with her so the information you'll be tested over is given to you in advance to some extent. You'll be reading the bio textbook constantly and memorizing diagrams. I don't even bother with his note pages or taking notes in class, just read the book and study the diagrams as much as possible. Most of his test questions are some slight variation on information from the textbook. I never attended SI, but I would attend for the second test over the nervous system and vertebrate anatomy. That test is a doozy and I know lots of people who utterly bombed it and since he doesn't drop any tests, destroyed their grade. Bio lecturers at Baylor are typically not very good, so take Harvill if you can. He's funny and genuinely passionate. His lectures are interesting depending on the topic and his tests feel fair.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1306 - Hardy Marvill!! What a guy. He's a great bio teacher with lectures that you can either pay attention to or ignore. He is funny in a corny way, keeping lectures interesting. His tests are multiple choice and they follow the book really well. They are almost always easier than I expect (and I am not saying this as an "I took AP/IB Bio in HS" flex). He is kind, helpful, and very clear about what he expects from students. It is not astronomically difficult to get an A or a high B. Love love LOVE this guy. As far as bio teachers go, he is by far the best; there is a reason why he has crazy long waitlists. I had him for 1305 and 1306 and would take him for my higher level courses if I could.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Harvill was a very easy professor. In class he just reads off the slides word for word which are provided by the manufacturer of the textbook. Test questions are generally easy and they are from the concepts/examples in the book. To learn the content either go to SI or read the book. The class is easy to get a good grade in.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - I had Harvill the 1st semester. I wanted to take him for 1306 2nd semester but his 200+ class was full ''(with several people on the waitlist). HW is given almost every week through MasteringBio. The homework is not hard at all considering it sticks with the lectures and textbooks. His tests are multiple choice and short answer. SI instructor was extremely helpful, humble and kind. I recommended this teacher to everyone I knew who was taking bio 1306 next semester and t shows since his class is full with several people on the waitlist.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - His exams were hard in my opinion. I went to all classes and SI. SI was awesome, honestly learned more through SI than through his lectures.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1305 - OH Marty. This man was insufferable. He never stopped talking and was immensely corny and boring. I believe I could've made a B but I couldn't attend SI. His tests were alright but a bit tricky to me. His CUMULATIVE final was 80% the last 2 chapters and 20% everything else. Unfortunately Marty was the lesser of many evils in the incompetent biology department so that's the only reason I recommend taking him. Have fun  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is a great professor. I did not take AP Biology in high school, so I was discouraged at the beginning of the semester because a lot of people were already familiar with the material. I would highly recommend going to SI. I did, and it was for sure the only reason I made an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 and 1306 - Honestly he's not a great teacher but his tests aren't the hardest. His lectures are terrible but if you read the book you will do fine. His SI is very helpful.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 1 and 2 - This guy is miserable. Just another example of Baylor professors trying to screw your grade and make you drop. He made his classes way harder than it should because the biology department told him that if more than 10% of the class recieves A's then his tenure will be threatend. This man is horrible.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1406 - Overall, Dr. Harvill is a great teacher. Classes are pretty much you listening while he reads off powerpoints and you fill in the blanks on note sheets that he provides on Canvas. His tests aren't terribly hard, just be sure to read the book carefully and go over the note sheets before the exam. Tbh I didn't pay much attention during lectures but I did still fill in the blanks as he went along. Homework is online and you take online quizzes and they're not terrible, you get to use the book while you take it and they're pretty comprehensive of what you're going over. Overall, Dr. Harvill is a really nice guy and in my opinion the best biology teacher. Take him if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 2 - Dr. Harvill writes exams where there are multiple right answers and you have to pick the best right answer. He teaches very out of order and is not helpful AT ALL. Online quizzes are posted randomly and it is easy to miss due dates. He made me hate Bio enough to change my major....  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305/1306 - Dr. Harvill is a awesome guy and I love him so much. He often sidetracks with stories and funny comments during lectures and you tend to zone out and sleep. He loves his job and teaching, but the lectures are slightly pointless. You'll do fine if you read the textbook. He does take roll and it'll affect your grade a lot, so go to class. He's extremely friendly so don't be afraid to talk to him or go to office hours.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1306/1406 - Ok so I took him first semester and he wasn't bad but this semester I can say differently. His lectures are useless because he just reads from the powerpoints and half the class is on Facebook or Netflix. His tests are actually kind of hard if you don't study so long story short: read every page of the chapter, go to SI, and when reading make sure you actually read because he pulls questions that check whether or not you've been reading. He's still a great option for Bio and if you can take him, take him. Just be prepared to read for the class & do not get me wrong, he is still a great professor.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - He isn't a bad professor, but his tests are long and hard. If you take him I'd recommend studying HARD because they are really difficult. His SI is pretty helpful though so make sure to attend those. Also a lot of the homework you can find answers to online, so it's not too difficult.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1306 - Very highly overrated professor at Baylor. Class is extremely straightforward regardless of who you take. Why I would not take this professor again: Dr. Harvill's lecture is useless (meaning all the information comes directly from the textbook, along with the testing concepts). I would prefer a professor that lectured something that I couldn't do on my own. DEFINITELY NOT A BAD PROFESSOR, don't get me wrong, but take all the reviews on here with a grain of salt... including mine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1306 - If you read the book diligently and take your own notes, you will be fine taking his course. Be wary of his free response though because that can drop your score on a test from a 95 to an 85. Exams are worth 90% of your grade in the course which is aggravating when I hear my friends talk about Quigley and Moore (Basically if you have a 86 you'll end up with a 90 thanks to all the EC).  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1306 - Where do I start? Harvill is a TERRIBLE teacher. He clearly loves the material and knows his stuff but he cannot for the life of him transmit that knowledge to students. His class was just him reading off powerpoints. I earned more from the SI than I did from him. I only went to class for attendance and I did not learn a single thing from him. He is also kinda rude and will not reply to student emails. i WENT TO HIS OFFICE HOURS A COUPLE OF TIMES AND HE WAS UNWILLING TO HELP. Don't take him unless you want to teach yourself all of BIO 1306  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - Everyone told me first semester (in 1305) that Harvill was the best professor to take- which is very strange because while he is super friendly, his lectures don't help you on the test at all. His tests are pretty hard and very book-based. If you do not read, take notes on, memorize all diagrams, and study all five chapters (around 100 or so pages), you will not have a chance at getting an A. I'm definitely not a book-based person, I prefer to learn from lecture, so this class was a big challenge for me. Going to lecture is essentially a waste of time, and most people spent lecture time just taking notes from the book. However, there is no homework besides an online quiz for each chapter, which only takes about 20 minutes each. But they're not worth a lot of points, so tests make up most of your grade.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305/1406 - TAKE HIM... MAKE FRIENDS WITH HIM... He is super friendly and loves this subject more than anyone. He loves to make jokes and build personal relationships with students. I highly recommend reading the material in the textbook for each chapter wether you take notes or not. The SI I had for his class is also amazing. Go to as many of her sessions as you can. You will have homework for each chapter but its nothing quizlet can't help you with if you are stuck. As far as studying goes, I advise doing the self tests at the end of each chapter and the SI practice test in order to prepare yourself for the test. Bottom line is once you have him you will want to have him for every biology class you will ever take in the future.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Best option out of all the other intro classes but he really isn't the greatest. He literally just rambles and reads of the powerpoint.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is so nice! His class is not that bad. JUST READ EVERY SINGLE PAGE OF THE BOOK and you'll be golden. He's actually really nice in office hours and explained concepts very briefly tho. I would recommend him. I also took him for 1V90 and honestly the class is very interesting and I actually recommend people to take it when it's offered for new students in the fall.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - You can't pay much attention in class because you are focused on filling out the notes from the power point because he goes pretty fast, but it doesn't matter much because you don't pass the tests on his notes alone. You HAVE to read the entire chapter and memorize little details. The first test was the hardest to me, and the next three were EASY. (if you studied a lot like I did...there was a lot of memorization) The final was insanely easy. The mastering biology quizzes are a pain, because if you actually tried to do them it would take you 4 hours, and you'd probably fail them. (what I am saying is, look up the answers on quizlet or you'll fail them, and no, the mastering bio has nothing to do with the tests.) Overall a very nice professor, and very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what he teaches. I am sad I cannot take 1306 because I would take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Harvill is an okay professor. If you're looking to read the book, take him. But he literally just reads off of his lecture notes he puts online, so there really isn't a point in going to class. His tests are actually pretty hard, but not impossible. The Mastering Bio is easy. He doesn't drop ANYTHING so if you mess up once, it could cost you an entire letter grade. That was probably the biggest thing I didn't like about his class.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - Harvill's lectures and tests are completely book based. The notes are essentially outlines of the chapters, but the tests require you to read the book (to get an A). There is homework through Mastering Biology, but they usually don't take long to do (20 minutes - 1 hour). Overall, he's a decent professor, and I'm taking him again for 1306.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:bio 1306 - Harvill is probably one of the easiest gen bio professors you will take! His tests are super book based and his class is not terrible to sit through. During office hours he can come across as a bit standoffish but over all he is a nice guy. Only super annoying thing was that he made us all purchase a Tophat subscription and I think we may have used it twice within the span of the semester.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO1306 - I would say he is a professor who is heavily book based. If you are someone who enjoys learning all of the material in your own time or SI then he is great. The lecture he mostly reads off the power point slides. His office hours are interesting because he is very busy, not much time for office hours. Great for those who like to learn on their own. ALOT of memorizing facts and rereading the textbook.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 1306 - Really good bio professor! Took Chacon for Bio 1 and made a C=... currently at a B+ with Harvill for Bio 2. Dr. Harvill is not a better professor than Chacon lecure wise but his exams are VERY fair. I don't pay attention in lecture but its not a big deal because I always end up adding like 3x the amount of notes to the class notes after i'm done with reading the textbook. BTW read EVERYTHING especially figures! Figures are usually the short answer. Unfortunately Mary Taylor the Si is leaving after this semester but her test reviews were VERY helpful. Take Harvill if you can!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305 - He is clearly passionate about what he teaches. He lectures straight off the powerpoints, often just reading them off the screen word for word. This means class isn't terribly interesting, but he tends to emphasize concepts that will show up more frequently on the exams. Other than that, class notes and time is not terribly helpful. Notes from the lecture are too general to be useful on the test. You have to take detailed notes from the book, and to understand the concepts you are writing down. Usually, I found the best use of time in class was taking notes from the book, keeping an ear out for anything he happened to spend extensive time talking about. SI sessions are quite helpful; they give you a chance to review the material in the chapters with sufficient depth, and to make sure you know what will be important on tests. Tests include relatively detailed questions, but they all come from the book. They covered 4-5 chapters of new material; the final covered about 3 chapters of new material plus all the previous material. Tests account for the majority of your grade (over 80% I think) so make sure to do well on them. Tests are by no means impossible to get an A on. There were also a few prefix/suffix quizzes, but these were easy and just boosted your grade. Mastering Bio takes some time (an hour or two usually), but it usually wasn't hard. This class took time, but for a weed-out class it was totally possible to get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - As someone who got a 5 on the AP Biology exam, and had a great high school teacher, this class was easy. Dr. Harvill teaches straight from the book. His tests are very fair and he often throws out questions. You will need to read and take detailed notes from the book, but an A in the class is very possible! Just be willing to work for it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1406 - Anyone saying Harvill is horrible just doesn't know how to study. Bio isn't meant to be easy, its a weed out class. Be prepared to study 5 chapters for each test (4 tests + final in total). And Newsflash all bio classes have the same workload. I enjoyed Harvill because he is clearly passionate about what he teaches and extremely knowledgable. If you actually go to class and LISTEN to him you will understand, and get clues and what will be on the test. the key word is listen. I was fortunate enough to be selected for his 1406 research class. Its a smaller class about 48 people (compare to the regular 100+) so its easy to focus on what his saying and ask questions in class. His SI, Mary Taylor is very helpful. If you attend her sessions regularly she gives you a practice test which is very similar to Harvills's test. Bio is never going to be an easy A so stop blaming your bad grade on the teacher. Harvill is great tho, I recommend him. I haven't taken anyone else but I hear he is the best.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305/1406 - Dr. Harvill is outstanding. He is very interested in what he teaches and will go out of his way to tell you more. Definitely visit him in office hours (it makes all the difference if you know him personally). His lectures are very straightforward and I don't recommend them to study with. Definitely know the book inside and out and you'll be fine. His 1406 class was the BEST class ever. So many opportunities and half the time you got to spend lab at the wetlands. Just beware of the lab exam... Other than that, it's a ton of fun being in his class (especially 1406... Seriously, take it!). I recommend him for sure! Plus, he really does teach you the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305, 1406 - I would definitely recommend Dr. Harvill for the introductory biology courses. His exams are not very difficult, although some have very detailed questions directly from the textbook. If you attend SI (review sessions outside of class led by a student tutor) and read the textbook you will be prepared for the exams. Dr. Harvill lectures directly from a powerpoint of the textbook, so sometimes lectures are boring. However, it does help to hear him talk through the material. Take his class if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - This class is hard. His tests are impossible. It's possible to do well because I know people that have, but not having taken a biology class since 9th grade, I knew nothing to start which made it difficult. I do not think I'd recommend him..take a chance if you want.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:BIO1305 - First off, most of the reviews that say Harvill is an awful professor are likely freshmen that don't know how to properly approach a professor during office hours and ask for his help. That being said, Dr. Harvill is one of the best, if not the best, introductory bio professor at Baylor. Admittedly, his lectures aren't always the most entertaining, but he genuinely cares about his students and will help you out in whatever way he can. His tests are very fair and his SI, Mary Taylor, is a very good complement to the class. It is very possible to do well in his class and I'd recommend anyone to take him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - DO NOT TAKE HIM !!! I just took this class and when the semester first started he seemed nice and funny but after the first test when I went into his office hours (which are freaking ridiculous by the way everyone has classes at that time) he was really rude. He is super unhelpful. I would send him emails and he wouldn't reply ever then he would call that person out in class saying "someone emailed me ..." I know you guys might think oh she got a C+ this is why she's complaining, but I really tried my hardest. His tests range from super specific questions mentioned in one sentence of the book to the broadest questions. He also has open ended and makes us memorize ridiculous things. He is not a nice man and he's not willing to help. I don't know maybe he wasn't rude to everyone but he was definitely rude to me. DO NOT TAKE HIM HE THINKS HES GODS GIFT TO HUMAN KIND BUT HE IS JUST A SELFISH TEACHER WHOSE CLASS SEEMS LIKE THE AUDIO VERSION OF THE BOOK. If you know how to read there's no point in showing up, and he won't help you. Go to SI if you have no choice but to take him. Can't say I didn't warn you.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305 - just take him. there's no one else better. His tests are challenging if you don't know how to study, but his SI Mary-Taylor is extremely helpful and with her you are guaranteed a good grade. Mary Taylor makes excellent test reviews and she writes the exam with Dr. Harvill so she knows whats going to be on the test and how to prepare for it. seriously go to SI.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1406 - Dr. Harvill is one of my all time favorite professors at Baylor. He is the nicest, goofiest guy and has a passion for what he is teaching. Bio 1406 was an awesome way to get some research experience in an interesting setting. The lab work and presentations (since they are factored into the lecture grade) really helped my average in the class, since the lecture part is the same as taking any other BIO 1306 class. I would definitely recommend taking this course over the regular 1306/1106 combo. It is a lot easier to do well (and is way more fun) than bio2 lab.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1306 - If you are not taking a lot of hours and/or do well in a very large classroom, then he may be the teacher for you. I suppose also if you are great at memorizing teacher's notes. Otherwise, do not take him. I repeat, do not take him. He is an interesting lecturer (he has stories besides just reading the powerpoints) but his exams are really hard and I feel like I'd rather have been in a smaller classroom (it was like 200 students for his class versus like 100 for the other ones) with say, Dr. Colby Moore, whom I loathed her class (1305) but her daily quizzes made me read the chapters. He seems like a cool guy, but if you're not that good in the sciences in the first place, believe me when I say you're going to want to take another teacher. Combined with the lab, exams and exam grades can get a little horrifying.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1305/1406 - Dr. Harvill has been my favorite professor at Baylor! He truly cares about all of his students and his lectures make Biology really interesting! Yes, you have to study for his tests because Biology is a hard subject, but it's not hard to make an A if you study well! I highly recommend this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1306 - He just reads PowerPoints the entire class. Not even worth going to class if you're good at reading the book. SI is not that helpful. Keep up with Mastering Bio. Easy class and prof. Take him as there are no better options.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill, in my opinion tries a little too hard to be funny, he just reads from the powerpoints, but doesn't post them online, so you'll have to take notes. You're much more better prepared if you just read the textbook a few times. The MasteringBiology was easy and it counts as quiz grades. There is no homework in Dr. Harvill's class. The tests weren't that easy, but they were do-able. All the question are all almost straight out of the textbook, but they tricky part is that they're very detailed, so read carefully! There are 3 tests and a final. His lectures are kinda boring, but you won't learn that much unless you're focus. Honestly, I never really paid much attention to his lectures, rather read from the textbook and did well.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305- bio 1 - Do not take Harvill! He is probably one of the worst teachers at Baylor. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL and INCONSIDERATE. No student should have to suffer because a professor can't handle their work load. HELLO! we pay to get an education and a fair chance. I'm not paying to go to school to have to deal with an incompetent professor which brings down my GPA. The tests are ridiculous. They aren't based on definition. Mostly they are concept questions that were never covered. He makes them super tricky, just trying to mess you up. He must get a kick out of sucking the fun out of biology and weening hopeful students out of the biology program at Baylor. There was no point to the quizzes on Mastering Biology, since none of the material covered on those are on the test. The notes won't help either for tests. Good luck studying for tests if you decide to take him. Don't get mad when you see NONE of the material that you studied was on the test and you don't get the grade you wanted. Can't say that you weren't warned. He's always late, even for tests and still wont give you extra time on a test etc. He will also be super late in posting quizzes/assignments on MasteringBiology and not let anyone know that he finally posted it. He won't re-open them too even though it was his fault most people stopped checking because it'll take him weeks at a time to post a quiz. One time it took him forever to post a quiz then posted it during Thanksgiving break. To make matters worse, he made it due during Thanksgiving break, without even sending a friendly email giving people a heads up. Going to lecture is pointless since he just reads straight off the power point. You can find the same exact lectures by just doing a quick Google search with the answers to the fill in the blank lecture notes that he provides. Avoid any of his or his wife's classes at Baylor. Students going to medical school will say the same. Seriously one of the worst professors here at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1306/4422 - Dr. Harvill is a great professor in my opinion. However, i will point out that I am not pre-Med, I am marine biology focused, so I eat up all the little stories he has about fish and other marine animals. Some students don't find these stories as interesting and feel like they are having their time wasted. Overall though, he is a very reasonable and laid-back professor whom I have really enjoyed having. In biology, I felt he made if pretty clear which points were important and he was a fair grader. Ichthyology is the best class ever if you enjoy fishing and finding yourself waist deep in a river with a gar. However, it is a class for those who truly love fish, not an easy elective for someone slightly interested.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1406 - Dr. Harvil is so cool! However his tests cover wide topics all the way to the caption of some photo he never mentioned. The SI kelly, needs to fall off the face of the planet. She was never helpful, and if you are not a tri delta or as fake as she is, you might as well not ever go to her useless SI.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Bio 1306 - I was a little bit disappointed with Dr. Harvill as a lecturer. He read directly from his PowerPoint slides every lecture, and the PowerPoint slides are word-for-word from the book. He is decently helpful, but he can be rude if you ask a question over email that he thinks he covered in class (even when he didn't). He gives 3 exams and a final and he is usually fair gradewise (he will drop questions that are deemed unfair and such... No raw curves, but we normally got 3-4 points back). The Mastering is easy for his course and he drops 4-5 of the assignments (there is typically one assignment per chapter). Overall he isn't great, but if you stay on top of the reading it is an achievable A. Also, if he says anything about TopHat, DON'T BUY IT. He told us to buy it this semester and we used it exactly one time. He might as well have told us to flush $20 down the pot.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Don't take Harvill. Just don't do it. He thinks he's soooo funny and folksy and teaches bio soooo well but in reality he's just a bumbling idiot who puts a nice face on the weed out system of the Baylor biology department. He includeds random irrelevant facts on his tests that come from one short line in the book, or a concept question that was never covered. Definitely go to SI, that's how I got an A in the class. You may as well not attend class because he sucks so bad. The dumber kids love him and sit in the front and then cry when they get bad grades. The smarter kids hate him, sit in the back, read the book and do fine. If you like biology, don't take him. If you want a university educaion, don't take him. If you want a science themed Arkansas comedy hour, by all means, take Harvill.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 1305&1306 - Take him for Bio 1 but avoid him for Bio 2. Test questions can be very obscure and random and don't really reflect the hard work and knowledge you have gained from studying. The SI instructor Kelly Caldwell is totally useless and her SIs don't help at all, except maybe for test review sessions. All Harvill does is read off the power points during lecture and talks about random things. Flexible office hours but had a bad experience with him during a visit, in which he decided to watch football instead of focus on me and my questions, pretty much ignoring me and giving me one word answers.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - Dr. Harvill's class is NOT easy. You'll need to work very hard on his tests. His tests get harder and harder. He doesn't curve based on class averages, he only curves if he feels like the question was hard to understand and needs to be omitted. His lectures are really boring and he usually cracks the worst jokes. The worst part about Harvill is he tests over the most obscure minor details that are COMPLETELY irrelevant to the big picture. Start preparing at least a week in advance.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 1406 (Research) - Dr. Harvill knows his stuff, and (speaking for the research students) cares about his students. His lectures are not only informative, but hilarious, and his personal stories help you remember the material. In order to do well on his exams, you have to read the textbook and go to SI (if only during the test review sessions). Going to the wetlands every Wednesday to look at insects and do experiments on them is much better than the 1306 lab, so if you ever get an email from the bio department about a meeting for Bio 1406, go to the meeting and apply for 1406! Harvill's class taught me a lot about the process of research (even only as a freshman!), and he's a cool dude to get to know. With daily preparation, this class is not hard and it will give you a lot of valuable experience and knowledge.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Difficult class. His lectures are interesting and you can tell he really is passionate about what he does. The tests are difficult and require a lot of preparation. He does teach straight from the book, but the tests are tricky. I never found out a way of studying that really worked well for me.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305 - Dr. harvill is a wonderful man. He is a great professor and makes the lectures funny and understandable. In order to do well on the test, do the masteringbio or whatever its called. The first test is literally all from the quiz sections in Mastering. Do that. His tests get progressively harder, but by the time the final comes, you will know how to study for his tests. Harvill is great.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305/1306 - This class is actually not as easy as everyone says it is. You have to put forth a lot of effort and time to get a decent grade. You have multiple online quizzes, 3 tests, and 1 final. I read each chapter twice, memorized his outlines, and would go over all the pictures until I knew everything like the back of my hand. His tests are much better than any other Bio professor at Baylor. During lecture I recommend just doing homework or reading your bio book.. he goes off on a lot of tangents and you could use that valuable time to do something worth it. but TAKE HARVILL!!! if you care about getting a good grade in the intro sciences.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - I took Harvill after seeing all of the A's that people on here got and figured it would be easy. I got an A too, but it wasn't the easy blowoff I was expecting/hoping for-- and no intro level biology class should be easy since its a premed class. At the end of the course he sent us an email with the grade distributions on it, this is helpful to see since MOST people that care enough to review a teacher here either 1. failed (or didnt..) and want to try to screw them over, or 2. got an A/B+ and loved the teacher. Anyways, here are the grades for the fall 2012 class: A =18.5% B+ = 19.6% B =14.5% C+ = 13.8% C = 15.6% D = 10.5% F = 7.5% People below me summed up Harvill's teaching so I'm not going to make this review any longer.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - What a blow off class. Harvill tries way to hard to suck up to students. He teaches like we are high schoolers, and his jokes are tiresome. His rating is high because he is easy, but I'm here to learn. I learned nothing from lecture I couldn't teach myself from the book. Really disappointed, expected a lot more from Baylor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 (Bio I) - Harvill is tha shiz. He's a goofball and class is pointless (he reads the textbook powerpoints), but he takes attendance and gives you helpful note sheets to fill out so you might as well go. One 1-2 hour MasteringBiology quiz per chapter (these helped me read the textbook) and three prefix quizzes, he drops 4 of the quizzes, 3 tests, and a final. The tests are hard, but mostly similar to the MasteringBiology quizzes and usually curved by about 3 points. From what I've heard it doesn't get any better so take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1305 - I could not stand this class. Dr. Harvill tried to funny and entertaining, but he was not. All he did was read the textbook powerpoints. I really had to teach myself everything. Unfortunately, he is supposedly "the best" intro to biology professor that Baylor has. What a shame.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - You just gotta looove harvill!!!!!! He is a great teacher and he explains the material with helpful analogies! you really don't have to show up to class to pass, but just do, cause he's interesting. His tests are petty easy, if you read the chapter, memorize all the concepts and vocabulary words. He assigns a mastering bio quiz for every chapter, but make sure you read the chapter before you attempt the quiz. he drops like 3 of your lowest quiz. I highly recommend harvill, take him if you can :-) good luck  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Dr. Harvill's class is rather interesting to me. It is the only class that I actually skipped, obliged taking notes in, and hardly went to SI for. I did like that he offered a general outline of notes for each chapter, yet don't be fooled: the test covers more. I, basically, did mediocre on 2 of the 4 tests and got a B on the final, hence, my grade. The class itself wasn't hard at all, but some of the tests can catch you off guard. I would definitely suggest Dr. Harvill for the Into-level bio courses. Just make you prepare for exams well in advance.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305/1306 - Great professor. This class is everything an intro level science class should be; difficult, but definitely manageable. He is an interesting lecturer that keeps your attention. Make sure you stay on top of MasteringBio because missing assignments and getting 0's can creep up on you. I hardly paid attention in class because I was usually studying for other classes, but I studied everything in the book that could be on the tests. There were always a few questions that were from lecture and not in the book that I usually missed. So if you pay attention in class, do the MasteringBio on time, and study everything in the book, you should get an A. The final is about 50% comprehensive and not too difficult at all.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1306 - Harvil is definitely the "easiest" of the Biology teachers, and so if you want your A, study the chapters like crazy and bring other homework to class. His lectures are unbearable for me. He has fill-in-the-blank ppt notes, but he will literally spend 20 minutes doing a punnett square or going off on tangents that don't matter at all. He's a nice guy, but definitely didn't spark my interest in biology.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is a very goofy guy which does make class more bearable. His lecturing style is reading the book's power points and elaborating on the information. The lectures are not very informative and I found reading the book and taking the online tests from the homework site to be the best way to study. The homework consists of pretty difficult online quizzes but he does drop four quizzes and for those who have perfect attendance, he bumps the lowest 3 quiz scores to 100's. There are three tests and a final. The first two tests were pretty easy but the third test over Mendelian Genetics was pretty difficult in my opinion. The final is 70% over new information and 30% cumulative. Overall I would recommend him for Biology.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - The class is easy. I put absolutely no effort into the class and made a B. I skipped the class a lot, never paid attention, and rarely read the textbook. I regret not putting more effort into the class, because it should be very easy to get an A. He drops about half the quiz grades, so there's no reason why you shouldn't have a 100 quiz average which is 15% of the final grade. From what it sounds like, he's your best option for intro bio.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 1306 - The class was pretty easy. I put 0 effort into this class and skipped class all the time. Just read the chapter and know the notes well. If I actually tried and studied a lot, it would have been pretty easy to get an A. For 1306 he's probably your best option.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1306 - Dr. Harvill was a great bio professor! Although it was difficult to pay close attention to the entire lecture, he did make an effort to be enthusiastic and provide real life examples to make things more interetsing. He also gives extra credit 1% of your final grade if you attend every class, which isn't impossible. His first test was very easy if you knew the material, but the second was definitely harder. However, I prepared very well for the tests by reading each chapter twice, knowing the diagrams, and reading his notes (which are almost word for word from the text) and I didn't make lower than an 86 on any of his exams. My point is, the tests are not easy or impossible, but they are fair. He was also very lenient on the online quizzes and dropped over half of them by the end of the semester. I enjoyed his class (I also took him for 1305) and would recommend taking him for bio  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Okay so I had Harvill for 1305 and he was a breeze. And then I guess he tried to be harder because I didn't make an A on any test. But it wasn't just hard.. the tests were STUPID. He would take one sentence that was never mentioned ever again in any of the chapters and use it as a question on a test. And he even put material on one of our tests that wasn't even in the chapters covered!! I'm not sure how I got an A in this class, I guess the quizzes were weighted super heavily or something so do well on those. I'm just happy to be done with general bio.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Harvill is a great Biology professor, as long as your major is Biology/Pre-med, etc. If you are from some other major that just so happens to demand that you take major-level sciences, I'd recommend someone else. He will not round up your final grade unless you have 100% attendance; you can make up two missed classes by going to seminars. Quizzes were assigned for every chapter; most low grades were dropped. The tests required more than brute memorization, so be ready to have the concepts down. Also, if you want to excel on the exams, go to SI. Some questions on the exam are taken directly from SI. On a final note, the little fill-in-the-blank notes he gives you are next to useless for the exam.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:BIO 1305, 1406 - Dr. Harvill has to be the best biology professor at Baylor! He is hilarous in class, with his biology jokes and occasionally poking fun at the students, but he also knows biology amazingly well. He is incredibly available and helpful. Be careful about MasteringBio assignments though; sometimes there will be a lull in due dates and then a couple will be scheduled in the same week, so stay on top of it. The tests are multiple-choice and over a lot of material (just take a look at the book and you'll get an idea), but he has an SI scheduled for the class to help with understanding the material and reviewing for tests. If you get a chance to take 1406, definitely do so! It is a fantastic class to learn from and have fun with, as all the labs are run by Dr. Harvill and are out at the Waco Wetlands. It gives you so much insight as to proper research and will really help with the rest of your time at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305, 1406 - Dr. Harvill is AWESOME!!! 1305 is a breeze if you look over the notes and do mastering biology and the study guide that comes with the book. 1406 was a great opportunity to get lab experience. Dr. Harvill really wants you to learn and excel. He is a witty guy who tries to make the material as interesting and applicable as possible.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1406 - Taking Harvill's 1406 class was the best decision I ever made! 50% of your grade is based off lecture exams and the other 50% is based off lab grades. The best part is you only have two lab exams (1106 has four) and they are not very hard at all as long as you memorize what he tells you to. The research project was very fun and I learned a lot from it. I loved having the lecture exams only count 10% each and then the final was only 10% too. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1406 - Best class i have taken so far. Dr. Harvill is awesome and keeps the lectures interesting. Be sure to check masteringbio frequently...some will sneak by ya before you know it. If you need help just ask him, and do NOT hold off on your research project!!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305 - I believe Harvill is the best biology professor any student can take. He is very entertaining in lecture and is quite quotable. He gives you notes that you fill in during lectures and then there are masteringbio assignments for most of the chapters. The tests are fairly easy if you study the notes and read the chapters. At the end of the class, he will give your average a 1% boost if you have perfect attendance. Take him!  - Grade In Class:A

If you pay attention in lecture, do the Mastering Biology, and look over the notes before the test, you will have no problem getting an A. Also, use the study guide that came with the book. Comments:1305 - He gives you the notes ahead of time and leaves blanks for you to fill in. it's a very helpful way to keep you active and awake but even if you miss them you can go through the book and find the answers. the book for bio 1305 at baylor is a great book.. but it's huge. harvill uses mastering bio which is very helpful. USE IT! exam 3 and the final were hard. and i'm not really sure why. the other tests were really easy. he posts a pretest on masteringbio that isn't a grade but the questions from the test were straight off of it.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is a very good teacher. It is easy to see that he loves Biology and wants everyone in his class to succeed! As far as homework, you have to be diligent about reading the material on your own, because I could tell other students who failed to do so were stressed when a test approached. He gives you ample time to finish all Mastering Biology activities and drops a few of your lowest grades at the end of the semester! His tests are a very fair assessment of your knowledge of the material-always multiple choice! He may or may not curve them depending on the average of the class! I would recommend him if a fellow student asked me about him!   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Very feasible to get an A if you put a little work in. Just glance over the chapter a little before he lectures over it in class. He's really easy to follow, and he tries to make the material interesting. All you have to do is print the fill-in-the-blank notes before glass and you're good. He's very good at indicating what you'll need to know specifically for the exams. Very nice professor, and one of the only reasonable reading schedules I've seen at Baylor. Take him if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is by far one of the best bio professors at Baylor. He not only makes an 8 am class worthwhile, he truly cares about making sure you understand the material. The SI sessions are really great too, and I highly recommend you go to them. As far as the homework/tests go: the only "homework" he has are quizes that you take online via mastering biology ( which are very easy) and the tests are straightforward and cover the information he talks about in class. He also gives you the nights for class so you can follow easier, they are fill in the blank. Overall, if you can, even if it's an 8 AM class, TAKE HIM!!! WELL WORTH IT!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 1302 - Dr. Harvill is a great teacher because of his personality. He so genuinley cares for his students, that he will talk to you outside of class if you see him, even if you had him in the past. It is not difficult to get an A in his class (or many classes) if you are willing to put the work in, first. He believes SI sessions are important so he will have one.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio - This class is awesome because the teacher is hilarious if you get his jokes. They are funny. The class itself is hard, you have to read the book and even then you really dont know what to expect. The notes he gives are from the books powerpoints and they arent a great indicator of whats on the test. Someone down below says he has a strong TX accent, omfg that made me laugh hard. The guy is not from TX, i think from some state up north. He is the best bio teacher though, so take him if you want a chance at an A. Also he does do secret curves by dropping questions that a lot of people missed. And you only get 1 point added to your average if you have perfect attendance. Not worth it because going to class doesnt help much, you just get to hear some good jokes. I dont know if its really the jokes that were hilarious or his voice. Someone said he is akward in person, yeah i agree with that he is kind of like a nerdy kid, but if he likes you its not so bad. Oh yeah and dont ever ask him about whats on the test, because whatever he says is most likely not true and stupid. I asked several times if i had to know something for the test and most of the time he said no. And sometimes it was on the test and sometimes it wasnt. He doesnt finish making his tests until the night before  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:bio1 - he was sort of rude about my learning disability accomadations. If you actually want to learn biology, do not take this class. All you do is fill in the blanks in his print out notes. If you want to suceed and retain the information, you don't go about it that way. I do not like this teacher.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1306/1106 - This was the first year experimenting with a new lab for 1106, we got to do undergraduate research at the wetlands! If that doesn't sound interesting than this class is probably not for you. 1306 was just the basic Pearson material nothing very hard but the notes in class are pretty useless, read and study the chapter to make an A!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio1305&1306 - Dr. Harvill is one of the best teachers I've had since being at Baylor. He is really funny and is always willing to help. He assigns online quizzes after each chapter we covered in class. His tests are an accurate assessment of what we covered in class. Comments:1305 - This class can be difficult, but if you put in time to study its workable. I'm not a pre-med or a bio-major student so I thought this course was unnecessarily detailed. The quizzes are breezy (masteringbiology) and fundamental. The tests are hard because you need to do some math (not a lot, but it kills your minutes to take the test), which he didn't do hardly any of that in class. No worries, your SI and Harvill will usually let you know. I wished this course was more conceptual rather than detail-focused, but I think Harvill is one of the best teachers to get you through this course! You should start studying a week before a test, just do portions of the material so that all you have to do the day before a test is review. Its way less stressful that way.   - Grade In Class:A

He cares a lot about his class and what he is teaching and likes to make the class more interesting with jokes and examples. You get an extra 1% for perfect attendance, and note-taking is easy because he gives you the notes from the PP and you just fill in the blanks during class. His tests definitely require studying but they're easier than the other professor's.  - Grade In Class:A

He always throws in a few analogies and jokes in order to make sure we comprehend everything. Other than the first test, the exams were not too difficult. Since all of the grades come from your exams and quizzes, you really can not perform poorly on any of the exams. Study, Study, Study. It is very important. Comments:1305/1306 - He's definitely a wonderful professor, and highly entertaining. There were many times in class that I felt like I was at a (bio-related)stand-up comedy show. You'll never be bored if you take his class. He, clearly, is very passionate about biology, especially fish. You definitely need to read the book if you want to get an A in the class. If you don't, you'll probably get C's on all the tests... that is if you pay attention in class. The tests are fairly easy, and they are multiple choice, but you must study. No homework. His powerpoints are based on the textbook, but still, you must read read read. He's just a great guy, and he wants all of his students to do well. He cares, and he will help you. So take him, and enjoy biology. :)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Biology 1306 - I loved Dr. Harvill's class. He is a very good lecturer and he is always willing to help you if you have any questions. His tests are pretty straightforward, but you have to study for them. I just read the chapters once and then studied the notes over and over again. You have 3 tests, about 8 quizzes (which are usually take-home), and a final. It's amazing that I could actually stay awake for an hour and a half... but Harvill somehow manages to keep my attention with his interesting examples and jokes. Comments:1306 - Dr Harvill is the best biology teacher baylor has for freshman biology!! He's a very involved prof who genuinely wants you to learn the concepts of biology. His colorful descriptions and stories that go along with each lecture are wonderfully helpful and made studying after class fun as you could remember what he said about some organism because you laughed about it. His quizzes are so very easy; you do them at home and turn them in on whatever day he emails you about. Tests started off a little hard but get easier as you go along as he looks at how the class as a whole does on the past tests and restructures it for every new test given. Tests are multiple choice with, maybe, a diagram or two that's very easy to read. Lectures are so much fun to come to, we laugh through almost every one and the material for the tests is on the pre-written lecture notes he has on Blackboard for everyone. My friend and I even started a "Favorite Harvill quotes" thing in which we recorded all his funny sayings. So if you're a freshman (I don't know if he teaches upperlevel classes) and want a GREAT teacher for biology please take Dr Harvill and have the time of your life learning biology!! PS his little twin boys are very cute and he uses them as an illustration, :o)  - Grade In Class:B

He has a habit of creating his own words at times, which can be a little annoying. He gives you fill in the blank outlines to his powerpoints and gives curves on every test. Comments:1305 - He is a very happy person who knows the material he teaches inside and out. In class, he lectures off of guided notes, which he posts on blackboard before the lecture so that you can follow along. He leaves some words blank, but that's only to encourage people to pay attention. You never have homework, but I advise you do your reading. If you read the chapter before you get to class, you should be prepared for the tests. SIs are also very helpful. You'll probably do badly if you just start to read/study the night before the test... but otherwise, this should be one of the more fun classes.. that you actually learn in =D  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - I loved Dr. Harvill's class. He is a great professor who really cares about his students doing well. Sometimes he would get a little off-track in his lectures, but his stories were cute and we still were able to get through the information on time. I was really scared of this class coming in, since soo many people are bio majors, but he made it, if not easy, then at least something that I could do without killing myself. I recommend him highly to anyone who is scared to take biology, I am definitely taking him next semester! Dr. Harvill is awesome!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr.Harvill is GREAT!!!!If you have an option of taking him, TAKE HIM!! Even if you have to wake up early to go to an 8 o'clock class. He is very helpfun and VERY easy compared to the other devils that teach biology. I had for my first sem of my freshman year and I am taking him for my sencond sem. His class is kind of like my high school AP bio class. He types up the notes and all we have to do is fill in the blank in class when he goes over the ppt!!! He also gives great examples to help you understand the material. His tests are pretty easy if you go over his notes and he usually goes over the tests after you take it to omit bad questions(so you get extra points).The tests are multiple choice and sometimes include an essay or a diagram. But the great thing is that he will tell you to look at a few diagrams and say that he will choose out of those digrams . He has a sense of humor that is great...you cant help but laugh when he says some of those corny jokes. He is always avaliable if you need to talk to him and its great to talk with him because it doesent seem like you are talking to a college prof...instead it feel like you are talking to an average guy. He is a very nice guy and it was his first year at Baylor this year. If you are a freshman you have to take Harvill because he is just one of the best profs at Baylor and you will not regret it.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Bio1305 - Dr. Harvill is a wonderful professor, his work is not overly difficult, he is generally specific with what he wants on his test and if everyone does badly on a certain question, he tends to drop it. He has a great sense of humor and his lectures are always interesting, with references to real life application or fish (he loves fish). His tests are not overly hard, but some studying is recommended. They are multiple choice and there tends to be some diagrams at the end. Overall, would most definitely recommend, as I am taking him again next semester!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:A - Dr. Harvill is an amazing teacher. He is extremely enthusiastic about everything he teaches, and very few of his lectures are boring. He always tries to tell jokes, and even if a joke isn't funny, his adorable Mississippi accent makes up for it. He's always willing to answer whatever questions you might think of, and he is genuinely interested in anything you have to ask him. As long as you read the material and listen in class, the exams should not be challenging at all. All exams are multiple choice. And even if there is a question that most of the class misses, he will generally throw it out. He gives fair warning about all quizzes too.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Harvill is so nice!! i think he is a great teacher. he always gives real life examples to help you understand concepts that can be hard to understand. he is always cracking jokes. sometimes he tries a little too hard to make you laugh. but u can't help but at least smile at his jokes and funny faces. he is really good about grades. perfect attendance is extra credit. and on test he usually drops questions that a lot of people missed. overall, he is just a really great professor. i LOVE his teaching style. 2007-2008 is his first year here. i hope he sticks around. i HIGHLY recommend him. he made my first semester at Baylor enjoyable.  - Grade In Class:A
