Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum's class is extremely unproductive. He makes his students feel uncomfortable, asking inappropriate questions, and all he talkes about is female and male genitalia. I have learned nothing about scripture and instead learned about his rants. He also does not respond to emails after the first three weeks of the semester. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1310 - Professor Tatum made making students uncomfortable a hobby. Workload is absolutely ridiculous for a mandatory class and tests are harder than they need to be. I took 12 years of religious education from K-12 nd still somehow struggled to earn an A in this course.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL 1350 - Well. Going into my second semester at Baylor as a freshman I was prepared for the Heritage class I would be taking, since I had taken Scriptures first semester. I was so wrong. Mr. Tatum is a character, he is funny and amazing at telling stories but unfortunately the majority of our work load came straight from a lengthy textbook (not his stories). He constantly made certain classmates uncomfortable, teased them, and brought up several topics irrelevant to the chapter we would be on in a book. There were 4 main tests based off the text book with no provided slide shows or notes to take, just stories about other subjects that distracted the class from what we were learning at the time. We had a take home reading usually about 20 pages per night, and we were asked to summarize it in a paragraph. Then every morning we had an in class quiz on our reading, there were no excuses if you missed class you missed the quiz and your grade goes down so much. The homework was about 5% of our grade and the tests were very specific and unrelated to what Mr. Tatum taught us. Please do not take this professor if you have a choice. My GPA plummeted all because of this class.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Rel1350 - Dr. Tatum is not a good professor. He assigns comically large amounts of work, which are daily summaries at least half a page long and daily quizzes. The summaries take up a ton of time and there's about 40 of them, and the same goes for the quizzes. Every day we take the quizzes and they're very hard and affect your class grade a lot. After you take the quizzes or exams, there's no way to review the answers, which are usually questions found on the exams anyway. There are only 2 exams and they are almost impossible to study for, because Tatum never goes over material that can actually be on the exams. He usually spends the majority of class going over the quizzes and then gets distracted and ends up ranting about something. I probably used up 2 pages total in my notebook with notes the whole semester because he doesn't teach. He's also gives weird vibes sometimes if you are a girl and I have heard of instances where he's been creepy and uncomfortable towards other girls in the class. Overall, Tatum doesn't teach and likes to make his opinions very clear, and his exams are next to impossible, and the workload is excessive. I would not take his class ever if I had known this stuff before.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1350 - No joke, the worst professor I've ever had. This professor uses no PowerPoints, no notes, no textbook, and NEVER stays on topic for the lectures. It is impossible to pass the exams let alone even study for them because there is nothing to study from. By the end of the course, you will be able to tell anyone the political stance Tatum has on every controversial issue and who he is voting for in every election. He claims to be a Christian, yet he degrades Christianity to be the most violent, abuse, and wrong religion. He only states his opinion on every topic and never actually tells us what we need to know for the exams. Every night we had chapter long readings along with a chapter summary paper due before the beginning of every class, along with a quiz over that chapter at the beginning of every class. Not only are there over 40 quizzes, but they are impossibly hard, and bring your grade down like exams do. He makes Christians question their faith and tells us that we worship the same God as Muslims. He walks in late to class every day, takes attendance for 15 minutes while we take the quiz, and then he tries to go over the quiz with us but then gets sidetracked because the class is so scattered and disorganized that he doesn't know where to start. He says that you can't be in the military and be a Christian because of the violence, and makes you feel like a hypocrite and bad Christian because we're not perfect. Please don't take him. It's a ridiculous amount of work and it will save you a lot of tears. You should not leave a religion class at Baylor questioning if Jesus is really the savior of the world. Worst professor, period. Unless you already have a PhD in religion, don't bother with his class.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - I have mixed feelings about Professor Tatum. When it comes to the workload for his Heritage class, you have to read a chapter of the textbook and write a summary of the chapter before every class, then have a quick in-class quiz over it. My main problem is that most of class time is spent not talking about topics that relate to what we read. Although I think he's good at having debates in class over religious topics, I wish we spent more time actually reviewing content in class. Studying for exams is almost impossible because there's no review material provided. All you have is reading chapters in the textbook, which believe me is not fun at all. In conclusion, I think Professor Tatum is a good person, but not so good at getting you to understand course material.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:REL 1310 - I personally really enjoyed his course. As someone who wasn't excited to have to take religion courses at Baylor his lecture style made me look forward to class. He provides historical context to most scenarios and allows for debates and class discussions. I enjoyed his lecture style so much,I brought a friend to class just to hear his lecture. I never read the textbook or Bible much, but I knew a friend who was well-versed and helped clarify material I didn't get during the lectures. Tests are very easy multiple-choice mixed with essay topics based on lecture. So long as you show up to class, you should be fine.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Tatum's class was not the best and not the worst. He gave a LOT of reading, so be prepared. We had a quiz every class over the reading that was only 5 questions, and sometimes they were very specific and sometimes they weren't specific at all. The tests were multiple choice with two "essay" but they were more like short answer arguments or class discussion questions. If you attend class and do the reading, they are very easy. He likes to ask controversial questions and force you into a tough spot. It's a very discussion-based class. He's not a horrible religion professor, but I thought some of the reading was excessive and there are definitely better ones out there.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL 1350 - Dr. Tatum is a great speaker and very passionate about what he is speaking about. However, he is very chaotic and all over the place when he is lecturing. He was very unhelpful when it came to asking questions about exams because he would never give you a direct answer or make your question seem like a dumb question. For example, someone asked what people would be important to know for the exam. He responded with if you don't know who Hitler, Churchill, or Karl Marx are then you're doing something wrong. Then proceed to ask exam questions like “who is King Henry's sister”. He also had us read a chapter from a book and write an essay over the chapter before each class, but it felt like the book (other than for the daily quizzes) was irrelevant because the exams were so scattered, and the lectures seemed to have nothing or barely anything to do with the readings from the book. The daily quizzes also seemed to be weighted too heavily as they were only 5 questions long and the questions asked on them seemed like they were things that should not have mattered at all. Especially when he preaches that it's more important to know the overall concept of the material rather than memorizing questions.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2021-05-10

Comments:1350 - Dr. Tatum is the most chaotic teacher I have ever seen. He rambles the whole entire class period and it's the biggest way of time. His tests are just factual recall which would be nice if he actually covered the material that was on his tests in class. He is a very nice man and truly loves his job, but an A in his class is a 94. I don't recommend taking his class unless you want to dread going every week.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2021-04-14

Comments:REL1310 - I had Dr. Tatum for Christian Scriptures, and the class went pretty well. He is a very unique and funny guy. Sometimes the way he tried to get us to discuss controversies felt a bit pointless or redundant, but usually it was interesting. Be aware that he does not like sharing the correct answers after a test or quiz has been submitted. You can see your grade on canvas but not what you got wrong. I didn't like that but got through just fine. There is a lot of reading but no other assignments. If you try to remember the questions on the quizzes and take notes in class, you will do well on the exams.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - LOTS OF READING! Dr. Tatum is such a character though. He keeps you entertained and the discussions are interesting. While this is obviously a religion course, he approaches topics from an unbiased standpoint and likes when students give different perspectives. There are reading quizzes every class which can kill you if you don't read. The test are kind of difficult because its over a large amount of information with little guidance about how/what to study. However, if you pay attention and do homework you should get a B.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - I HAVE POSTED THIS REVIEW MULTIPLE TIMES BUT BU BOOKS TAKES IT DOWN! BE WARY OF TATUM! Dr. Tatum is a smart guy, and his lectures are interesting. I went with him to Baylor in Oxford, where he taught my Christian Heritage class. His lectures were helpful, and he is clearly very passionate about what he does, which was great. He is super knowledgeable about church history and was like a kid in a candy store in all the places we visited, throwing in interesting facts about the places we went. However I did not feel safe around him. He asked often to enter female students rooms unaccompanied by a female chaperone and remained in the rooms often. He also once threatened (as a joke but still) to slap a student, telling us that our GPA does not matter. I am on a scholarship that depends on my GPA, so I tried explaining that to him. He would not listen to my logic at all. Over the trip, he was creepy, way too touchy feely, and made me feel overall uncomfortable in the class. He also frequently made sexist comments to both students and the fellow professors on the trip. Would not recommend until he learns how to better interact with women. BU books has deleted my previous reviews on him, and I don't think that is okay.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Oh my goodness..this guy..I don't even know where to start! Dr. Tatum is honestly such a character, there was never a class where I didn't laugh at something he said or did. I had his 9:05 class and even at that time in the morning he would be yelling and screaming, so I definitely was always awake. He is constantly bringing up issues that you wouldn't really expect, and he makes you think super critically about things. He can be all over the place at times, but at the end of the day, he truly is a great professor and if you do the readings and listen to him in class, you'll do great. My favorite thing about Dr. Tatum though, is how kind he is. Obviously this semester was weird, but he was constantly reaching out to his classes and letting everyone know that if we needed anything and I mean anything that we could text or call him and he would make sure we were okay. Seriously the most selfless man on this earth!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIC courses - I've taken multiple classes with Dr. Tatum and I'm shocked that he doesn't have a higher rating on here. Yes, he brings up controversial things but that is intentional because it forces us to learn and think critically. Getting As in his class isn't easy but if you work hard it is entirely possible. Dr. Tatum is hilarious and I learned so much in his classes.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-18

Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Tatum is a very passionate man and knows what he is talking about but the class is honestly way too difficult. Significant amounts of reading every night, an assignment every day, and a quiz every day. Class time is dedicated to him trying to spark controversy and get us to argue and you learn everything you need for the tests from your work at home. Would not recommend this professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-03-05

Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Tatum is very smart and he knows a lot of information concerning the bible and the history. However, he made this class entirely too difficult. If you're looking for an easy class and you aren't a religion major DO NOT take him. We had extensive readings that we took 5 question quizzes over every single class. For one reading assignment, I usually spent an hour and a half. I'm a nursing major so this class which does not pertain to my future at all took up too much of my time. I suggest taking another professor if you want to have more time for more important classes.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2019-12-22

Comments:1350 - Dr. Tatum is very intelligent, and you can tell he knows an extreme amount about christian heritage. He is an animated professor that likes to spark a lot of debates among the class. All good things aside, I would advise taking from a professor that doesn't make things more difficult than they should be. This class took up the majority of my homework time, and giving a 50 MC test with 2 essays in 50 minutes just really doesn't cut it. If you want to be decently entertained, take him. If you want to learn the same things and make an A+ much easier, take someone else.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2019-05-30

Comments:Heritage - Dr. Tatum was easily the worst professor I have had at Baylor. Grades were not posted in canvas a single time all semester and the vast majority of his classes were spent on him lecturing about how his political views were superior to those who disagree with him. I would strongly urge you take this class with someone you can actually learn about the history of Christianity with.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2019-05-15

Comments:World Cutlures V - I can honestly say that I learned more in Dr. Tatum's class than in any other class at Baylor. He made our class laugh every day and even bought us pizza to have a class movie night. He can be a bit scatterbrained when it comes to planning things and gettign grades back to you. Getting an A is possible but it takes a lot of work. Howver, it is totally owth it to take Dr. Tatum's class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-05-11

Comments:1350 - I would highly suggest taking this class. I had a boring Scriptures professor and I am not a Christian so I came in, preparing to zone out or do homework. This did not happen. As soon as Dr. Tatum got into his lecture, he would capture my attention instantly. He is a flamboyant speaker and related Christian history to present day issues. He is not afraid to ask the hard questions and controversial topics. He'll ask you hard questions but he just truly wants students to think through why they believe what they believe and grow as a person. At first, he did intimidate me but if you go to his office hours, he is kind and patient. There are daily quizzes over textbook readings, but they are easy as long as you take good summaries. The exams are a little more difficult, as there are about fifty questions and an essay portion that I never excelled at it (there just isn't enough time!) But you will really learn a lot from Dr. Tatum, so take him!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2019-05-03

Comments:REL1350 - Okay, here's the thing: Dr. Tatum is wild - he yells, he jumps around the classroom, brings in controversial topics, he's even come to class in full robes before to prove his point. I've taken him for Scriptures and Heritage. I recommend taking him because he always keeps the class engaged and entertained. Things that suck about his class are limited to the workload and exam essays. The reading summaries are extremely time consuming. The quizzes and exams are very fair and straight forward. The essays also consist of two essays that are semi subjective. Overall, it's not hard to get a B, but I'd say it's semi difficult to get an A BUT you will learn so much more than you expected from him  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310/1350 - Dr. Tatum is by far one of my favorite professors at Baylor. He is animated and passionate about the subject and his class discussions are very entertaining. He does like to play devil's advocate with the students who take part in class discussions. His homework is summaries of the readings, and there is a reading for every class. Make sure to do the readings and keep up with the summaries because there are daily 5 question quizzes which are easy if you did the reading and if you let the summaries stack up it can be a pain. His tests are half MC and a couple of free response questions so make sure you pay attention to the discussions because they will most likely be the free response portion. Also most of his MC questions come straight from the reading so make sure to pay attention to the quiz questions because they are super similar to his test questions. If the class has perfect attendance he gives 10 bonus points to the quiz. Honestly, his classes for both Christian Scriptures and Christian Heritage were both very doable and i definitely recommend taking his class. The only complain i have is he doesn't use canvas for grades and only shows them a couple of times throughout the semester.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-04-16

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is extremely smart and truly wants his students to succeed. He was extremely animated in his lectures, during which he didn't use any technology but instead wrote main points on the chalkboard and drew pictures. We engaged in discussion and argument about religious controversies, and these were the basis for the test essay prompts. Since he doesn't post materials online, you need to attend every class or get really good notes from a friend. My biggest pet peeve from his class was that Dr. Tatum doesn't use canvas, and he only lets you see your grades for the daily quizzes every few weeks when the test grades come out. Also, the class's workload is very intense with an average of 10 pages of textbook reading and an average of 20 chapters in the Bible for every single class (average difficulty daily quizzes tested whether or not you actually read). Additionally, for each textbook reading we wrote a 2-page summary and each biblical chapter a 2-sentence summary. I probably spent 6-8 hours per week reading, and we read about 7/8 of the Bible during the semester. The tests were not difficult, and he is very clear about how he does not try to give you "tricky" questions. I came out with a 95 in the class, so it is definitely possible to do well if you keep up with all the material. Dr. Tatum is hilarious and kind, but I recommend taking him only if you do not already have classes you anticipate to have a big workload.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-03-27

Comments:1310 - Professor Tatum is such a fun guy. He's extremely knowledgeable about scriptures and you will absolutely learn a lot from this class. His classes are always entertaining and you will take about some very...interesting topics. The major downside of his class is the workload. If you enjoy history or religion I highly suggest you take his class. You will have bible and textbook readings every class-most are very long. You will have a short 5 question quiz at the beginning of every class based off your homework readings. The tests are not difficult if you study, especially if you have some basic knowledge of the Bible and its characters before you come into the class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-12-03

Comments:Intro Scriptures - Dr. Tatum is brilliant and you will learn so much from this class. I think he has a low score because he brings up debates in class.... which is great for personal development because it forces you to think about what you truly believe in. He does assign a lot of Bible reading but it pays off in the long run! (His idea for doing this is so you get an overarching picture of Biblical stories). You have to be able to manage your time well in this class and space out your readings or else it will bite you in the back the night before (don't do that). If you want to learn ...for real... TAKE TATUM. Also if you want an A, just study... you can do it!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-09-16

Comments:1310 - I want to start by saying that I thoroughly enjoy Dr. Tatum as a person, but I don't like him as a professor. This class has readings scheduled for each class day, and you have a quiz probably 75% of the class days. These quizzes can either be super easy or extremely hard but if you do the readings you should be fine. You are also required to write a 2 sentence summary of each chapter of each book of the Bible that is assigned to read. Some nights you have 15 chapters to summarize and some nights you have 45. These can be extremely time consuming. You also have textbook readings assigned most nights. You are required to write a 1 page summary on each of these readings. You turn in all of your written assignments on Wednesdays and you usually turn in about 7 pages of written material. The lectures in Dr. Tatums class are quite interesting because he is very energetic about his class, but they cover almost none of the material for the test. The only things covered in class that show up on the test are the essay questions and these usually cover controversial issues. You are given no guidelines on what to study for the test so you are forced to study all of the readings. The tests can cover anything from broad topic questions to extremely minute details. I studied probably 15 hours for each test and only managed to pull out mid eighties. The final exam in the class is comprehensive and 100 questions which requires a lot of studying. If you are looking for an easy A then do not take this class. An A is obtainable but it will require lots and lots of work. If you can take another professor, but if not you will be fine taking Dr. Tatum's class. Just know that if you do you are signing up for a major workload.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:REL1310 - I personally did not like Tatum but have had a bunch of friends who loved him. He basically screams his lectures at you (I sat second row..splash zone) and you never really know which parts are important and which ones aren't. The homework is extremely time consuming with quizzes every single class period. The only positive is that you get 10 bonus points on quizzes if you have perfect attendance. Overall, I did not enjoy that class or his teaching style.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2018-05-01

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum has so much knowledge of the bible and the culture behind it, it's incredible. He's a very caring and VERY energetic man, often running around the classroom and shouting (in a good way). There is a lot of homework, but it's all easy. You have to read certain bible chapters each class and summarize them, as well as summarizing short snippets from the "textbook." He focuses less on the bible in class and more on the culture, and class is filled with many debates that are applied to the world today. Many of my friends tell me how their teachers make them memorize verses and be able to recognize where they are from, but Tatum focuses more on concepts and the culture. He is a great teacher and I would love to take him again!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-12-10

Comments:1310/1350 - I LOVED Dr. Tatum. He is a very interesting person and will definitely challenge yourself to form your own opinions with controversial discussions. Other reviews have said he is a racist which is 100% WRONG. If you pay attention in his class you will see that some things he says is out of irony of what society used to be like in the past. He is a sweet man and I PROMISE you will NEVER be bored in his class. The only complaint I have is his essays on tests. The TA that grades them is RIDICULOUSLY picky!! Take him for the interesting lectures. Avoid if looking for an easy A  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Dr. Tatum has made my religion class one of my favorites! He is super interesting and funny. He isn't afraid to address controversial topics. The workload is a little much at times, but the homework is a super easy grade. You just have to read and write summaries on the chapters. His tests are pretty straight forward, but the essay portion can be a little tricky. Although the workload may seem like a lot, his lectures completely make up for it. I am never bored in his class. STRONGLY RECOMMEND  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-04-10

Comments:1310 - He really expects some past familiarity with the bible, but you should know that's the course topic coming in, and so catching up is doable. His lectures are engaging, and the class is pretty interesting overall. You'll have a fair amount of work to do, but it is more tedious than really difficult. Tests are very hard unless you have time to memorize the bible. He is better about helping if you talk to him after class or go to his office hours; less so by email.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-04-07

Comments:1310 - DO NOT TAKE HIM! This class has more homework than any other Bible Class. The entire Bible has to be read in four months. No matter how much effort you put into the class, the tests are still impossible. He goes off on tangents and the class will get far behind.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2017-01-12

Comments:1310 - Tatum is an extremely smart and funny guy, and he sure loves to get into controversies. If you do not have a heavy Biblical background, DON'T take Tatum. He expects you to know very minor details about the Bible that most people would only know if they have grown up reading it. He also gives LOADS of homework, reading entire books of the Bible per assignment sometimes. However, his class is very entertaining and interesting and you will learn a lot. Only take him if you know a lot about the Bible and are willing to do lots of reading. Otherwise, steer clear.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2016-12-21

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum's class was very interesting and always entertaining. You can tell he is a very knowledgeable man in every lecture. He often likes to discuss controversies, so I can see why it makes some students uncomfortable. However, coming from a traditional religious education, he brings a different perspective to the topics that you thought you knew everything about already. The amount of homework is daunting-- several books of the bible can be assigned per night, with attached handwritten summaries. The quizzes are pretty easy if you read. The tests are always 50 multiple choice questions with 2 essays that you cannot BS because you will not get full credit unless you prove that you thoroughly understand what you are writing about. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take Tatum. But, if you're looking for a very interesting, entertaining class that you don't mind working a little harder for, you won't regret taking Tatum.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-15

Comments:1310 - Tatum is a very interesting teacher, but his class does require lots of reading. He expects you to keep up with all of this reading, which can be a challenge when the reading assigned is an entire book of the Bible. I really enjoyed his lectures, but I'm sure there are easier teachers out there. His daily quizzes were not too hard as long as you did the reading. His tests were pretty straightforward but always had questions that we never read over, and this really annoyed me. With that being said, I did learn a lot from him. Overall, Tatum is a decent professor, but I would say that if you are looking for an easy A, this is probably not the best class to take.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr Tatum is the most entertaining lecturer I've ever heard. He certainly does not shy away from controversy and it results in every class is interesting. Homework is assigned for every class but is just Bible or textbook readings and are perfectly manageable if you stay on top of them. I found the tests to be easy however I had a large background in Christian education so much of the material was familiar to me. TAKE TATUM.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-10

Comments:1310 - Take a better professor while you can. One of the first few weeks the class was introduced to a controversial topic which was interesting at first but as the class progresses you start to ask yourself why you put up with it since you don't learn a single piece of information for the test. If you don't have any background history with christianity DO NOT TAKE HIM. He does not give relevant lectures nor gives any notes prior to the tests. All the notes are based upon his lecture. Many lectures can be very vulgar and inappropriate. His lectures were unclear due to repetitiveness and him repeating uh after almost ever word he says. The day of our first test he didn't even remember so he pushed it back a week. If that doesn't sound unorganized to you I don't know what will. His tests are 40-50 multiple choice with two essays and with the time allotted it led to a lot of rushing towards the end of the test. Homework assignments are about 20-50 pages of reading a night- you will read most of the bible. He also likes to ask almost every class what everyones denomination is as well as draw an irrelevant map on the board. If you want to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading and listening to him lecture about very off topic things then take him. Drop him while you can or you will hate your life.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1310 - One of my favorite professors at Baylor. Classes are (almost) always interesting. He's not afraid to bring up controversial issues and discuss them among the class, which make for a very enjoyable 50 minutes. The readings are due every Friday and are the only homework assignments in the class. Sometimes they can be much, especially if you procrastinate and wait to do them Thursday night. The tests are not too bad. About 40-50 multiple choice questions and two short answer questions. As long as you did your readings and just paid attention in class, you can expect an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Christian Scriptures - Amazing lecturer and really interesting guy. Assigns tons of unnecessary reading and busy work and tests and quizzes are insanely hard considering you never go over what is on them. Unorganized and late almost daily, holds class late every day. I would do readings daily (sometimes up to almost 40 bible chapters a night + textbook reading) and rarely passed the quizzes. Tells you to memorize material or study specific stuff for tests and then doesn't put it on the exams. Never enters grades and takes forever to get tests back. Had to drop because I was doing so poorly. People with lots of knowledge of the bible will be OK in this class but he makes Scriptures way harder than it needs to be.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:Scriptures/Heritage - I took Tatum for both of my required religion courses because I have never been so interested in a subject. He is a biblical archaeologist so a lot of what he talks about is more anthropology based rather than religion based like some of the other professors. His tests are hard, (usually 2-4 people get A's per test), but if you pay attention to his lectures the tests come straight from that. I personally never studied for his tests, and still managed to ace both classes.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - I do NOT recommend taking him. He is a great and engaging lecturer but his lectures are too sporadic to take good notes on because he talks in circles. He repeats information and it felt like we never made progress. There was an unnecessary amount of homework and the quizzes and tests were unnecessarily hard. I grew up in the church and went to a Christian school where I studied much hard religion topics and I am still not prepared for this class. It is so easy, it's hard. I never knew what to study because he won't tell you.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Religion 1301 - You will never be bored in his class! He is very funny and engaging. One tip though, HE HATES PHONES. The only thing that frustrated me was the amount of homework we had. With every reading assignment, you are required to write summaries which were just a waste of time in my opinion. Tests are fairly easy, but difficult to prepare for. I easily can make Bs on the test, but no matter how much studying I do for some reason I can never seem to pull off the A.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - Tatum is one of the few professor's I've had that can hold the attention of the entire class for the whole class time, which is very impressive. The class is very interactive with him teaching. He'll make you think even if you weren't planning to that day. If you do the reading and actively listen in class, you're almost guaranteed an A. You can tell he seriously knows his stuff.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - I hated this class, not necessarily because of Dr. Tatum, but the way the class was run. He made you read so much from the bible and write summaries over them. Sometimes it was no big deal, but other times it was too much and I would not do the homework. His quizzes are nuts; I think I passed the first 2 and that was it. The tests were bad; I failed them all but was saved every time because of the essay and my attendance points. Show up to class and pay attention, this isn't a class to skip. I honestly have no idea how I got a B, it might have been Dr. Tatum or maybe I just caught a break. I'm just glad I don't have to take this class ever again because it seriously sucked so bad.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum has been my favorite professor! If you know your bible and listened to Sunday School and grew up knowing about the OT then you'll do fantastic! I BSed my summaries ( you have summaries for readings that are due at the beginning of the week). His assistant wasn't helpful at all and Tatum was also running around campus. He's also a BIC professor and never replies to emails. He's always energetic and makes class interesting! I once said this man was my spirit animal and secretly wished he'd accept my offer to be my grandfather. His tests are pretty easy if you know your bible. He's all over the place when he lectures, but he is hilarious and up to this day I remember a lot of the silly things he would do and say. He made me think about life and he likes to end class with a contradiction. GREAT STUFF! Take him if you know your OT and want to laugh during class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - I liked Dr.Tatum as a person, he's an awesome person with an adventourous life and the stories he tells are fascinating. His energy level is high and will definitley keep you awake. However, I did not like his teaching styles. He said this and that would be on the tests and they weren't. He's very unorganized and often late to class. He doesn't have power points and just talks and will write random key words on the board, it's hard to keep up with. The tests are very detailed and mainly come from reading assignments so taking notes in class is basically pointless (although you should still take notes!). I was in a MWF class that was 50 minutes long and he always let us out late and the test was extremely long for such a short amount of time. It was 50 multiple choice with two essays. I dropped because this class should be an easy A and I didn't like his teaching methods so I wasn't doing very well.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is a really interesting professor in class but a lot of what is covered on the test is "do it yourself". You have reading assignments for every class and are required to turn in reading summaries. The readings are usually long and the summaries are very time consuming. The readings are very important because it is what the multiple choice on the test is based off of. The tests are multiple choice with 2 essays. The essays come from his in class discussions. He also gives pop quizzes, about 8. While he is an interesting and kind person, I would not suggest him. The workload was too much.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Scriptures - Dr. Tatum should be rated much higher than he is. The man is HILARIOUS!!!!! He is by far the most interesting professor I've had so far and is an EXCELLENT lecturer. True, his lectures can seem a bit rambly at times, but pay attention! That "rambling" he's doing is exactly the material that is on the test. If you pay attention to his lectures, you should score in the high A range with no difficulties. One warning: Tatum requires reading summaries due every week, so it's a bit more work than other classes, but I would gladly do the extra work in order to have such an interesting professor. Also, he is kinda bad about responding to emails and posting grades, but it's all worth it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - If you have read the Bible before, and are familiar with it, this class will be a breeze. Having known the Bible, I barely had to study for any of the tests. However, you MUST pay attention to the lectures. At the beginning of the semester I thought he was just rambling, but test time I noticed that the random 'concepts' he mentioned in class were on the test. The textbook is awful and useless, very bias, the only thing you will need it for is the summaries due each week. Also, Dr. Tatum throws in random reading quizzes. If you know the Bible you won't even need to read the assigned Scripture pages, I never did, and aced all of the. But if you are unfamiliar with the Bible, it's crucial that you read every night. Depending on prior Bible knowledge the workload is not hard, but the summaries for all the reading is a pain. I always waited until Sunday night to start on them, and would end up finishing at 3am every time...so don't leave them until the last minute, not doing them hurts your grade. Dr. Tatum was cool, I did not agree with everything he taught, but he was a good teacher. Again, make sure to take notes over the class lectures, and write everything he says.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - This is a love hate class for me. It was extremely interesting learning about Biblical mythology and the history of ancient Mesopotamia and its people but I feel like those who have a strong Biblical background will do much better than those that have little to none. First off, Tatum is a great guy. He's interesting to listen to and offers a really unbiased explanations of Christianity and Judaism. His lectures will really get you thinking about Religion in general. The lectures, however, only contribute to the essay on the tests. Controversial questions like God's gender, the Oral Laws vs Written Laws vs Jesus, and explanations of Tabernacles are prime examples of essay questions only covered in class. I personally feel like the essay was a crappy way to miss a lot of points, make sure you give an answer that includes topics and "keywords" covered during the lectures; such as "building a fence around the Torah". The majority of exam questions are specific questions in relation to the Bible. Questions ranging from "Who was turned into a Pillar of Salt" to "Which Gospel told the story of a woman being tried for adultery before Jesus?" Sparknotes will help you pass the class, but it won't get you near an A. Reading is the key. This is not a class to blow off readings on. Oh, and all readings require summaries. Most summaries will take a page of notebook paper. Expect to turn in 5+ pages on Monday morning every week! Not a light workload, but it's straightforward. The textbook SUCKED, FYI. Absolutely contributed nothing to the tests or class itself and only served to explain stories in the bible clearly or encourage deep thinking about the stories. Quizzes suck. They're random and if you show up late one morning, because your bus ran late, or perhaps you put off reading that night for that math homework, expect to be SOL on the quiz. UNLESS, again, you have a good background in Christian theology! Then you should do fine. Attendance is a grade, show up as much as possible! I didn't get a B just because I was lazy and used up all of my absences!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:REL 1301 - Favorite class of my semester - when else are you going to get the opportunity to be taught religion by a professor who has done archaeology in Jerusalem and lived with the Beduin people?! Tatum's incredible passion and wisdom concerning the Bible makes his lectures very interesting. His lectures were so fascinating that I never had to study the material covered in his lectures. The workload is more than other religion classes, and homework consists of reading and summarizing many excerpts from the Bible and from the textbook. Tests are difficult, but with daily preparation, it's not a difficult course. Overall, it's a very rewarding course.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - I highly recommend you don't take this class. I love religion and want to minor in it, but this class just sucks. I had many classes on religion in high school and personally spend a lot of my time reading the Bible, and yet i could NEVER do good on his tests, no matter how much i studied. This class was my only B, and i studied SO much for it. It's a big workload and very time consuming, plus Dr. Tatum doesn't use blackboard so you never really know what you have in the class. Definitely don't recommend this class to anyone.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - Probably the most interesting teacher I've ever had, but also probably the most frustrated I've ever been with a class. Comments:1301 - I absolutely love Dr. Tatum. He knows so much about the historical aspects of the Bible, even lived in Jerusalem for years, and really challenges you in your thinking. He is always entertaining to listen to, and he always manages to make you laugh at some point in the class. He gives a syllabus at the beginning of the year that he sticks to rigidly, but it isn't hard. Just read the readings before the day they're supposed to be read by and you're good. You write summaries over every reading each week (usually 3-5 readings) and hand them in together every Monday. His tests are straightforward if you've taken notes and done the readings. He gives pop quizzes, but drops the lowest one each unit and if your class has perfect attendance, you get 10 bonus points on the quiz for each perfect attendance day. There's 3 tests, I think, and a final. Only about 5 or 6 pop quizzes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:REL 1310 - Tatum creates an academic atmosphere and a spirited debate among his students. Teaching Ability: Tatum obviously knows his material. He teaches well and emphasizes important points. Most of his lecture's content is not on the exam, however. Availability: Good. Even during the Summer. Helpfulness: I approached him after class with a question and he gave me a conversation that lasted over five minutes of non-stop information. Workload: If you have never read the Bible (in depth), this is an issue. The reading can be quite taxing, but it is manageable. Overall: Good professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - I really enjoyed Dr Tatum! He is a funny, quirky guy. He likes to spark debates amongst the class by posing controversial issues, which was entertaining and better than sitting and listening to a boring lecture. He is very passionate about the material, especially the historical and archeological side of the Bible (expect a few geography questions on each test). He sometimes got annoying because he tended to repeat material a lot, go over almost all of the previous lecture instead of moving on to new material. There are reading assigments for each class from the Bible and a commentary book. Summaries over the week's assignments are due on Mondays. At the end, he dropped a few of these summary grades. There are also pop quizzes, about 10 in the semester I think. They are SOO easy. I usually got a +100, even if I had skipped the readings and was just going off of my Biblical knowledge. He offers extra credit on the quizzes for each time your whole class has perfect attendance. The tests were pretty easy. They mostly covered the people (ie who is the father of __? how many brothers did __ have?) and the stories (ie where did __ go after __?). There is an essay portion of the tests, but he grades easily and they cover a debate in class or ask you to describe a specific cultural issue from the time period. Overall- you need to do or skim the readings for the summaries, but there isn't other homework. You don't have to study for quizzes and the tests are straightforward. He's entertaining and I learned a lot! I definitely recommend Dr Tatum!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIC 1324 - Dr. Tatum, while interesting and a very informative lecturer, is the not the best professor for small group. He takes forever to grade papers and tests, which will really hurt you when it comes to the research paper for this class, and in small group rarely directs the discussion in any direction that is helpful for the tests. We turned in our rough drafts for our research papers before spring break, and he gave them back over a month later, two days before they were due. He promised to have all of our final tests and papers graded before we moved out in case we had questions, but this was simply not true. I had an A in the class, felt strong about the final, and somehow ended up with a B. I never saw any of these final grades, despite the fact that I emailed him several days before grades were due and before I moved out. I never received a response. As I mentioned before, Dr. Tatum is a fantastic lecturer, but I do not recommend choosing him as a small group professor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - Tatum is great!! He is very passionate about his subject and has some really neat stories about his traveling experiences to help you understand. His enthusiasm makes the lectures enjoyable and makes you want to learn the material. There are daily readings (either from the Bible, textbook, or both) which you write summaries for. If you do it right, it can be time consuming depending on how much reading there is, but it's not just busy work - it really does help you in the long run to study for the tests (2 throughout the semester and then a semi-cumulative final that has mostly the last unit material but some of the basic and key themes from throughout the semester). There can be a quiz any day over the reading from the night before, but if you do the reading, you'll be fine. He also adds 10 points to the next quiz for every day that the whole class has perfect attendance, so if there's not a quiz for a while you can rack up some serious bonus points, which help a lot. Overall, Tatum is a great guy and great professor. I really wish he was teaching heritage because I would take him again in a heartbeat!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - A lot of reading is given (usually some out of the book and some out of the bible). Summaries are turned in every week over the readings, great grade boosters. Comments:BIC 1324 - Dr. Tatum is excellent. I really can’t say enough good words about him. He’s exciting to listen to and has a way of making even the most boring piece of literature seem exciting. His ideas about the tests were kind of radical, but usually in a good way—he really doesn’t censor himself in terms of subject matter, so class discussions can literally be about anything that can be remotely related back to the reading material. You’ll learn a lot in his class. He brought up a lot of ideas in the readings we wouldn’t have thought of normally, which kept things interesting. However, you’ll definitely have to do the reading to understand what he’s talking about, especially because he may call on you randomly. He’s not a professor you can slack off under; if you get called on, make sure you’ve got something intelligent to say. It’s always easy to catch him after class or in his office hours if you have questions, and when you have questions, he’s almost always willing to sit with you until every doubt in your mind is answered. Kind of a slow grader, though, and is really reluctant to use blackboard, so don’t expect to know how you’re doing in the class unless you ask him directly. (Asking him directly is never a problem, though.) He and McGlashan are the best professors in World II, in my opinion—I only had Tatum, so I can only speak to that experience, but get one of them if you can.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - Tatum is hilarious and wonderful. Even though I was dreading taking Scriptures, he made it an interesting class. He likes to go off-topic sometimes, but it's really funny when he does. It's also hilarious when he has to address terms like, erm, "feet" (and not the ones you stand on) because he'll get a tad embarrassed. He has a lot of interest in the subject and he wants students to do well in his courses, though, and it shows. Do the readings every day--there are quizzes on that material and the quiz questions give some insight into the tests. Tests are multiple choice and fairly hard, but they're passable if you read the material. He tends to ask on the main points, so if you have a Bible reading to go off, be able to summarize what you've read, who the characters are, and that will help a lot. It's surprising how accurate movies can be when it comes to getting the names down--a lot of us cited "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" as the only way we could get THAT story down with its 87 gazillion names. Tatum tries to give review time in class if you have any questions, though, so take advantage of it! I took the summer session, which is shorter, but gets it out of the way--which is a great way to knock out your required courses that you're dreading taking. If you've got the money to take on a summer session, do it!  - Grade In Class:A

You feel super accomplished at the end of the semester when you look back and see how much you've actually read (or skimmed). You can just copy the headings and turn in the homework and still get full credit, but if you do the homework for real everyday it will pay off. Dr. Tatum is passionate, the way he teaches the background of why the Bible is the way it is is genius and even though I went to a Christian school all my life I learned a whole lot. Study! Take detailed notes and read the Bible and you can do amazing. The only reason I made a B+ is because I thought the 1st test would be easy and I didn't study a lot. Comments:REL 1310 - This guy should not be teaching at all. He is the epitomy of the absent-minded professor; he refuses to use things like powerpoint, so he always forgets what he talked about the previous class, so he'll spend like 15 minutes going over things he went over last time. Oh yeah and his reading quizzes are freaking ridiculous. There are also some people on here who say he gets into "controversies." wth people, controversial is "does god exist," not "let's fix the mutually exclusive accounts of genesis." His MC tests are beastly too. The worst part is you have to HAND-WRITE chapter summaries of the bible AAAAAND your textbook. I prolly spent at least 15 hours a week on that damn class, and had to bust my ass to get a B. And by B, I mean 80. DON'T take this guy, he really doesn't even care if you learn the stuff or not; he teaches the class and then disappears, and his "review" sessions are ENTIRELY depended on students just asking questions; he will not even hint about what will be on test except that it's your bible reading (and yes he will ask minute details). Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Tatum is a great lecturer and is really interesting to listen to. He knows a ton about the Near East and its culture and communicates it very well. However, he assigns an unnecessary amount of busy work in the form of summarizing the Bible. The info in the reading doesn't show up on tests, only quizzes, so its a little frustrating. Also, hes apparently quite busy and really doesn't make much time for students outside of class. Take if you don't mind wasting your time on 10+ pages of Bible summary per week.  - Grade In Class:A

He really loves controversies and debates- so if you like to argue, you will love his class. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the material-he often teaches in story form, which makes it so much easier to stay engaged. You only have to memorize about ten dates for the whole class. The pop quizzes are fine if you do the reading, and the tests are not too bad (60 mc and 2/3 essays). The only downside to Tatum is that the homework for every class takes forever! You have to summarize all of the readings. Besides that, he is a great, funny, crazy, professor who truly believes the Bible and has sound teaching.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Scriptures - Definately one of my favorite teachers of all time. Dont listen to what people say about his TA, the man is hard working and nice. i saw him at pizza hut with his fam it was sweet. His energy, knowlege and amount of experience are amazing! His tests are largely from his lectures, the essays are easy once you understand what he wants. i got an F on the first test and A on all the rest and a B on the final bc i was very sick. Make sure you attend the first few days of class religiously b/c that information is crucial to success in the class. A major perk of his scriptures class is how he spends 1 day to look at slides when he traveled in the middle east.. and did some *really cool stuff!! it was a chill day that really represents Tatum's class. its hard but you learn ALOT and its very fun :)   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIC cultures II - Tatum is simply the best. He is interesting, funny, and friendly...though he might tell you to shut up a few times :) He really fosters discussion and gets his students to think critically. He is also EXTREMELY helpful--if you have good questions ready about your research paper, he will help you tackle them. My one complaint is that he doesn't return work as promptly as some of the other Cultures II teachers...but that is definitely outweighed by how awesome he is. Comments:1310 - The rave reviews are true. He is not a woman, but quite nice anyway (sorry - my adviser thought he was a woman). He's very animated, which makes class bearable. But good luck getting to know him. He's too busy, and all the students try to ask questions after class; and the only time I went to his office hour, he wasn't very helpful. The handwritten summaries of everything you read are a little hard to handle. I spent literally 3 hours before each class trying to write them in time. And for what? He says they help when you're studying...but they don't. Even if you know tons about the Bible, it's still hard to get an A. Comments:BIC 4389 - - Capstone: David, Jesus, and King Arthur - Dr. Tatum and Dr. MacGlashan tag team this course, and it's fantastic. We read the biblical accounts of David and Jesus, along with modern retellings. Same with the Arthur stories - we read Morte d'Arthur, plus excerpts from the Mists of Avalon and Alfred Lord Tennyson's poetry. At the end of the course we read Rilke's Letter's to a Young Poet (so good!) and excerpts from some of Anne Lamott's books. Class discussion was great. There were two mandatory movie nights + discussion afterward each month. It was kind of a pain at the time, but I'm glad we did it. Among the movies we watched were Jesus Christ Superstar and Jesus of Montreal. The movie nights added a lot to the class. You also have to do 5 outside learning activities, but BICers are used to that. Tests are fairly straightforward if you've read and come to class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is amazing! His enthusiasm for the subject makes the class so much more interesting! He draws a map of Israel and Palestine every day and it's one of the things that you just anticipate during his lecture. His tests aren't bad as long as you have a general knowledge of the Bible. He is really approachable and is willing to help you if you just ask for it. The reading summaries were a chore, but you get used to them after a while and figure out how to do them efficiently. He is a really great professor and you should really take him if you get a chance!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Christian Scriptures - Let me just start off saying that I wouldn't have wanted any other teacher for Christian Scriptures!! I learned sosososososososoo much in his class and I absolutely LOVEEE him!! He is sooo interested and excited about teaching his students!! I loved listening to him every class!! I didn't miss one day!! Well I wouldn't anyways because he gives so much information and all he talk about is on his final!! MAke sure to actually DO and understand the assignments he gives daily because everything pertains to finals and exams!! I got B's on two of my exams and basically failed my final...but I kept up with my daily reading assignments and took notes everyday ( I didnt dread it!! --though I did fall sleep in class once or twice) I ended up with a B+!!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED Tatum and I basically know the outline of the mpa he would draw out everyday in class..I LOVED IT!! Take him!!! PLEASE!!! He's a wonderful guy to listen to if you love listening to stories that are so interesting!!!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:TCS 1310 - Dear God, dear God, dear God. Get out. Although this class is very fun and interesting, Tatum's tests are sooo soooo hard. For the final I recorded all of his lectures since the last test up to the final, re read and outlined ALL of the assigned bible readings, and copied the notes 9 times along with three other peoples notes in the class. The final was over the New Testament mainly and so therefore my mom even ordered me a 30 tape series of lectures from a professor at UNC Chapel Hill and I watched EVERY SINGLE ONE (each one being an hour) and thought they were relevant for the final. I knew everything about the Bible I thought going into take the final. I ended up missing 28 out of 100 after weeks and weeks of studying. I was crying for weeks. I don't think it is fair to have to take religion with such a hard teacher when others have teachers that are so simple...this class was soo awful. If you have him, get out. He basically tells you it is impossible to make an A in here...this class is a GPA killer!!!! Tatum also isn't helpful with grades. Grades are NEVER on blackboard and it takes FOREVER to get test grades back. One test it took 5 weeks to find out our grade, seriously.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1310 - He's an amazingg professor. I learned so much in his class. There's 2 tests and then the final. The tests weren't hard even if you didn't study. The final was the only test that required some studying. The tests were always like 50 multiple choice and then 2 essays. The final was 100 multiple choice and 1 essay. The homework load got a bit ridiculous, but it seems to be that way in any religion class. There are several pop quizzes, so keep up with the readings. Overall, his class seems a lot easier than other religion classes. He's the best professor i had this semester. I would definitely recommend taking him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Christian Scriptures - Dr. Tatum has been by far the best teacher i've had here at baylor! He is sooo funny and animated and really engages his students during his lectures! I came to class everyday because i enjoyed his class so much. He'll be waving his hands in the air, and shouting with excitement so you really cant get bored. This isn't a class that you can slack off and get a good grade though, you'll have to work for it, reading all the assignments, however he makes the class so entertaining you'll do well. I TOTALLY recommend professor tatum! he's awesome!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - I loved this class. really. Dr. Tatum is awesome, its never boring, he's so animated in his lectures...and yes someone mentions he draws a map of the middle east everyday, he really does. I liked how he was very narrative all the time and he gives humor and life to characters in the bible and made me understand it alot more. He also always engages the class into the lesson. We'd get into debates some days over controversial stuff. Thats another thing I like, is that he's not afraid to talk about things that may be controversial. Only thing I didn't like but it wasn't too much of a hassle are the summaries but they really are not that hard. He also gives pop quizzes but that's also not something that should scare you off. I never did the summaries till the night before they were due, which is on fridays and I still aced the quizzes whenever he gave them without doing the readings. The tests are just as easy. Reason I gave 3s on availability and helpfulness is cuz I dont know cuz I never really sought him out or needed help. Highly recommend this professor.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIC Heritage - Dr. Tatum is amazing. He will get up in your face and make you participate, but it's not annoying. I went into the class very much against the bible, but now I feel like I have a better balanced view of it, especially in its historical/cultural context and less hostility towards it. His stories about the middle east are amazing, and when he lectures you will take about 6-7 pages of notes but the time will fly by and you really feel like you're learning something.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2008-05-09

Comments:REL 1310 - Leaving out the fact that Dr. Tatum draws the map of the Middle East every class day (literally, he really does), his lectures are fairly engaging and informative. Once in a while, he may misinform the class (I have a couple hundred of verses memorized)-take Exodus 14:7, for instance (He claimed only 600 chariots followed the Hebrews when it was 600 of the best chariots plus all the other chariots of Egypt), but his mistakes are mostly minor and he presents the information in a novel method. His quizzes are easy, and his exams are almost so. His notorious summaries will take time, however, so be prepared to set aside an hour for reading/writing.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Tatum was a great professor. He was very funny and explains everything to where in the end you understand the entire Bible inside and out. He is known for giving a lot of work, but it's not so bad, he just makes you summarize everything you read, it's not that difficult, and he doesn't grade it hard. His tests are easy, straight facts from reading basically. What you get on the essays basically depends on your TA. He was awesome and I would take him again in a heartbeat.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-04-21

Comments:1310 - Tatum is a fun and exciting teacher. But he gives WAY too much reading in which you have to do summaries on. He gives great and interesting lectures, but his tests are very very difficult and he doesnt really give you any preparation for them. I would not recommend him.   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Christian Scriptures - I loved Dr Tatum!!! This guy is superb! He really knows his stuff, and has been to the land where the Bible takes place many times! Pay close attention and he'll even throw a bit of Hebrew in his lectures! (I loved the experience) This is one teacher you should def. take if you are interested in learning about the Bible. He explains the stories in depth and you'll leave this class having literally read the Bible. If you're smart and do your Bible readings along with the summaries you'll be just fine. His test are super-easy if you pay attention, read, and remember things from Sunday school. I really wish he taught Christian Heritage.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ... while this guy is an entertaining teacher who knows his stuff he is not worth hours and hours of busy work he makes you do ... before every class period you have to HAND write these two page summaries of the chapters of the bible you read. this might not seem bad, but this is the most redundant stuff that will literally take you an hour to write AND IN THE END IT ONLY COUNTS FOR 10 PERCENT OF YOUR GRADE ... seriously it is awful, the tests are pretty hard and his teaching assistant is AN IDIOT ... this guy lost 5 of the summaries we turned in and he made us redo them. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1310 - Tatum is an amazing professor! He really knows his stuff and is very passionate! His lectures are really interesting! There is alot of reading though, and the tests are long. Comments:Christian Scripts - This guy is a great teacher. He knows what he is talking about. Listen and do all the reading assignments and you will get a B. His test are fairly hard I got C's on the two test and a B+ on the final and some how got a B+ in the class. If you come to all classes do all the reading assignments and pay attention thats 20 points to your grade! The test are all mult choice some true false and two short essay questions. I'd recommend Sr. Tatum  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - He's an awesome professor and LOVES what he does. Dr. Tatum is passionate about what he teaches and loves to bring some controversy into a class lecture. The only downfall is that there are TONS of readings that are for homework and due each week for only 10% of your final grade. Even though the reading assignments are only a small percentage, I would highly recommend doing them as they are due because there are POP QUIZZES throughout the semester. There's only 2 exams and then a final. Tests were actually pretty easy if you do the readings and take notes in class. The textbook is pretty much useless unless you don't know anything about the Bible. No test questions come from the textbook so just the lecture and readings. Tests are multiple choice with 2 essays usually based on a controversy or concept he went over in class. He's a really cool professor, and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:scriptures - he gave interesting lectures but it was in the afternoon, after lunch, so i struggled staying awake. Very animated and funny. you have bible summaries to turn in every monday but i thought they were an effective way of getting the students to read the material b/c i kno i never would have read the bible in less he was making us stay on track by having us do the bible summaries. tests were kind of hard to study for b/c we had no review and he basically said everything is game but i always i always did good. they were multiple choice and 2 essays. my advice would be to give plenty of examples on the essays, basically write as much as u can b/c that really helped my essay grade which a lot of ppl did poorly on  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is very passionate about his subject and gets really into lectures. He is an amazing archaeologist and enjoys what he does. His tests are fairly easy if you have paid attention to lectures and read all of the bible stories. The only parts about his class that sucked were the bible summaries that take forever!! They supposedly help you review but it's a lot of work for only 10% of your grade. He also forgot to give us quizzes until the end so we were bombarded with them the last 2 weeks of class. His final was pretty much a breeze and he gives LOTS of extra credit opportunity! Overall, a pretty good guy!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - I had Tatum for scriptures and I loved it. Tatum is a great professor that makes class fun. If anyone says his class is hard they are lying, it is just a lot of work. As long as you do the homework, wich is reading and writing summaries, you will do good on the test. But make sure you do the homework because they are easy completion grades that count alot and he gives pop quizzes on it. I didn't know alot about the bible before I took this class, but I learned so much and got an A. The class is easy as long as you do the work.If you can take Tatum his clas was so much un.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Scriptures - He was amazing, most defanitly my favorite professor. The class is HARD, and you have a ton or work, but you gotta do it to pass the test. They are hard. 50 questions, A B C D E and usualy 2 correct answers and you have to find the best answer. Its hard, but possible to get a B. But the number of A's is low. But hes amazing so its worth it. He knows what he talkin about hes funny and passionate. But you don't really contact him you talk to his TA who is rude and annoying.   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1310 - taking tatum was the best decision i made this semester! i learned so much, and enjoyed every class. some of my favorite parts were his "thought experiments." true, you'll have summaries every class, the tests are multiple choice and short essay, but it is absolutely worth it! for tests, focus on his lectures more. for the quizzes, focus more on the biblical readings. please, take this class and enjoy it! :)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is pretty funny, he gets really into the material he teaches which is always interesting. However, his tests are pretty hard. Theres only two so you have to do well on them and they are pretty time crunched. They were mainly based off stories straight from the Bible and his lectures; I dont think there was ever a direct question from the textbook on a test. His homework really isnt too bad, I waited to do a weeks worth of homework every Sunday night, but still managed to complete it. His idea of extra credit is kind of a joke though, he will add 1 point to a test for attending a 2 hour lecture and writing a paper. His class is pretty tough, but not unbearable.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Christian Scriptures - Dr.Tatum is an absolutely charming little man. He is so enthusiastic about the matieral covered in this course and has a lot of first hand experience, living in different countries, etc. He is extremely smart and understaning of the Bible. This class was hard; there is not getting around that. There only 2 tests, and the final exam. The first two tests were about 60 multiple choice questions-from textbook reading, Bible reading, and lectures, and two essays, which counted for 20% of the test grade. The final exam was 100 multiple choice questions and one essay-counting for 10% of the test grade. The tests were hard, but if you study a lot and actually pay attention to his lectures, which is not hard, you can pass the test. The homework load is what gets to most people, and was the most time consuming of any of my other classes- Bible and textbook summaries every class period. You really do get used to it though and it helps if you actually do them thoroughly. I would definitely take Tatum if you can, he's a sweet and hillarious professor, which is refreshing when it comes to learning about Biblical background, etc.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1324 - hes such a cool guy, really goofy and funny, but he is a hard grader for the bic essays. reading quizes sucked and if you were late he would make you call out random answers and then he would grade your quiz according to what you just called out...so be on time because those add up to a lot of your grade. also, if everyone is in full attendance at large and small groups, you get extra credit! so freakin bully your class mates into being in class every day. but ya, wc II sucked , tatum was awesome  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr. Tatum is the most passionate teacher i have had at baylor. By far his passion made the class alot easier to understand and learn from. He was very approachable, and after class people were always lined up to talk to him and i waited. He is by far my one of my favorite professors so far. I thought he assigned alot of reading but it was worth it, reading gave you all the answers for the quizes. you really have to earn your grade but if you read, and write the notes then you really don-t have much to do. Also stay awake in his class, he-s passionate but he chases bunnies (gets side-tracked).   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - This class rocked. Dr. Tatum knows how to teach. Several times I left his class wanting to stay longer and learn more. The way he taught didn't make me want to get a good grade but to just be interested in the subject. There is a good bit of Bible reading, but alot of it I had never read before so it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. We had to write summaries of our readings which weren't bad either. Teachers change you, not grades, take Dr. Tatum.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - This class was very interesting and I learned a lot, Dr. Tatum knows his material very well and makes it accessible. However, those who are looking for a class with little homework should stay away because there are daily readings/summaries that sometimes include whole books of the Bible (each chapter needs to be summarized briefly). If you don't wait to do them all over the weekend, it might not be so bad. As far as other work goes, there are several quizes a year with the lowest dropped, but if you do the readings then they aren't hard at all. The tests are multiple choice with a couple essays, and if you pay attention and do the rest of the work then they shouldn't be too bad. He gives extra credit, too. All in all, it's an interesting class, not impossible, but a lot of homework.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - This class was awesome...Dr. Tatum is so passionate about the Old Testament that it begins to rub off on his students...Every class was enjoyable, except those taught by the TA. This class was my first college class and definitely worth my tuition dollars...Also hold out til the end...Dr. Tatum karate kicks the door and if you've got high enough grades you get exempt from the final...only downside of the class is the intense reading, but the reading makes the tests and quizzes lots easier...great class, very good and interesting professor...take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Tatum is a super class!!! The HW summaries do take forever though. The Quizzes are fine as long as you have skimmed your reading and they are almost always just the Biblical stories(we had 6 in our semester). There is bonus opportunites and he grades kindly. The Tests are quite easy too! He is a very interesting person and has lots of great stories. He is an excellent class to take!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1310 - I'm not going to lie, there are summaries that take HOURS to do every week... don't put them off!!! Dr. Tatum is very enthusiastic and you can tell he really loves what he teaches, but that doesn't make his class any less easy. He covers the entire bible in the span of 4 months... and that's NEVER easy. Tests are not TOO bad and he gives you extra credit on the pop quizzes (not too many pop quizzes... once a month?) if all the students are in class one day. Good guy, and you need the class. My advice: take Tatum.  - Grade In Class:B

The tests are multiple choice and 2 essays, really they aren't hard just memorize your notes. Also the text book readings are never on the quizzes or tests so you can just glance over those. However, from the moment I stepped into Dr. Tatum's class I was proved wrong. He taught me SOO much and he was the most exciting professor I have ever met. He was genuinely excited about his subject and it came through in everything he did. He was very friendly and funny and would help you whenever you needed it, that is if he was available because he is busy a lot since he is president over a big committee. His class actually made me very interested in religion and I even thought of it as a major. I would recommend him to someone who is not interested in religion at all or is bored by it. Comments:Scriptures - Dr. Tatum is one of the most amazing and interesting people I have ever been in contact with. His lectures are awsome and you will never get bored in his class. Tests are easy enough if you know your stuff. They are usually about 50 mult choice and 2 essays, not too bad. The readings can be time consuming and annoying with an occasional quiz unannounced. Overall he is amazing and I would take another course from him anytime.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Old Testament - I am surprised to see such positive comments - especially since a lot of the grades are C's. He not very objective in his lectures, although he does add the Apocrypha, I felt that he was very Baptist-centric (which I know is to be expected here). I only found a few of his lectures interesting, but I thought his tests and courseload were too strenuous for an introductory class.   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Christian Scriptures - Tatum is great. He makes the class so fun! However, he gives you reading assignments that you must summarize by hand. Sometimes it is very time consuming. As far as tests, just read the notes you take in class and read over the bible stories that you were assigned to summarize. Know the concepts discussed in class, and you'll be fine. Go to class, though. He takes points off for absences.   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Christ. Scriptures - Tatum is an extremely intelligent and wonderful man. His class was moderately boring but some of the topics can be real interesting. HIS TESTS ARE SO HARD, I studied hours for them and half the material on the tests, I had never seen before. our TA was terrible and was the one who made, administered, and graded the tests, and he was incredibly difficult. So I guess it depends on yout TZ... but if It's Derrik, then be careful. Do the readings and GO TO CLASS because he counts off a lot if you dont go. overall, Great teacher, decent class, but wouldnt be my number one choice.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Scriptures - Tatum is awesome, I absolutely loved the class. He has a very unique way of presenting the material and really makes biblical history come alive in a way that sunday school never quite did. Something I was surprised to see, but nevertheless glad, he didnt teach the material from a religious point of view, as most teachers at baylor do, he presented material from the bible within a broader historical context and so it really demystified the bible and was such a fascinating class. However...homework was a bitc*, those damn summaries can pile up on you and swallow you whole. Lots and lots of homework that is extremely time consuming, pretty easy tests (although sometimes he gets confused on what he covered in class and what he didnt, so he puts stuff on the exam that was just...woa, way outta the blue), but overall, you will learn a ton and its pretty easy to get a good grade, 'long as you keep up the good work soldier. Comments:1310 - Tatum is an awesome professor. Yes, you do have a lot of Bible and textbook readings and summaries to do for this class. But, the guy is an amazing teacher and he made me want to come to class every single day. Even though the tests and homework are hard, I would take Tatum to learn so much more about the Bible. He is amazing!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Christian Scriptures - He's an excellent man and teacher. I wasn't looking forward to taking religion, but it turned out being my favorite class only because he's so interesting. He assigns alot of reading and you have to write a one page summary everyday, but they're really good when it comes to studying for the tests. You have to study for the test and know what you've read in the Bible, but they're definately do-able. I'd really recommend him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:WC, BH, Capstone - Tatum is awesome! I've had him for two courses so far and I'm going to take another one with him. He's way smart and you can tell. Tests always come from lectures and outside reading (nothing random) and as long as you kept up on reading you did well!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - I love Dr. Tatum. I worked my schedule around taking his class simply because he is so knowledgable and funny. The workload is more than for other professors, but you learn more in the process. Do your Bible summaries everyday to be ready for quizes to help your grade. The tests are difficult but definitely not impossible.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - He is a good man. Mos def. knows what he is talking about and is a great lecturer. He is one of those prof. that you want to get to know because his life seems so interesting. He gives a large amount of reading from the bibe and text on a regular basis. His tests are harder than you think, you really need to study if you want to do well. Everyone should take him for the experience....good man that Dr. Tatum.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - He is a great lecturer and very interesting. A little scattered brained but it keeps class interesting. Extremly entertaining. Tests are doable, read everything. He has u turn in summaries of this bible and the book, it sux but if u read u can make the grade u want. He has pop quizes but usually he goes on rages and has like 3 in a row bc he forgets, extra credit on these if the whole class is there. Very recommended.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:strongly recommend tatum, although he is harder than others, but you will learn soo much though - great teacher and class!

Comments:BIC 1324 - I only experienced Tatum during a couple of large-group lectures, but I enjoyed his presentations. He seemed to make the concepts much more interesting, and his sense of humor was captivating.

Comments:Bible Survey - Tatum was great and I'm going to try to take him again. The work is light and he's a great speaker so class is actually interesting. If you study for the tests enough, you'll do well on them

Comments:1305 - Funny funny man! I love his classes, they are interesting and its my only class that I don't fall asleep in. You have to do readings every week, and thats the only outside work, but you have to write a 1pg summary per reading and there's normally 3 per week and they're all due on Monday. He's awesome though, one day when our class had perfect attendance he ran and kicked the top of the door(and he's a short man). I would take him again if I could. He's crazy!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:i loved survey of the Bible with tatum. he is sooo interesting and totally into the material. extremely easy teacher. you barely even need to study. he gives a lot of busy work but it is extremely easy and really doesnt take too long. i definitely recommend him to slackers like myself:)

Comments:Tatum is the most amazing prof I have had. He is soooo interesting and knowledgable. I would take him again, despite the heavy workload. It was all worth it!

Comments:He really knows what he's talking about and is really interested in what he teaches. His class is mildly amusing, but there is alot of busywork. The tests arent too hard though.

Comments:Loved Tatum; would take him again in a heartbeat. Doesnt like to have walks but he is hillarious and very outgoing. You will learn about the Bible and a lot about the Middle East.

Comments:He is a great teacher, fun and interesting! You have weekly bible summaries which are time consuming but if you do them right, the tests are a breaze. This was an easy A, you just have to work for about 2 hours a week.

Comments:I took Dr. Tatum for Survey and I had to read a lot for his class but it was hands down the best class I've taken so far. He makes things very interesting and entertaining.

Comments:terrific lecturer, very knowlegable. keeps it interesting. daily bible & textbook reading required, must turn in handwritten summary every week.

Comments:Dr. Tatum is very entertaining in class; the only drawback is a lot of busy work (Bible summaries). The tests and quizzes are pathetically easy.

Comments:He's really good-very interesting and the tests weren't too bad as long as you listen in class and have a sunday school knowledge of the Bible. A lot of reading to do, but it's not horrible.

Comments:Tatum is a great lecturer and I learned an immense ammount from him. The class was very difficult in terms of homework amounts and test difficulty. If you don't mind the work load, definitely take his class - so interesting!

Comments:Dr. Tatum was an excellent prof! He is so unbelieveably smart, I learned so much! I'm not gonna lie, his class is pretty hard so don't take it if you're looking for a blowoff. But he is a wonderful lecturer.
