Comments:1405 - Something I really appreciated about this class was the fact that all of the slides were posted on Canvas after presented in class. He was also available before and after class for further explanation, as well as providing substantial office hours.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This class is the reason why I switched my major. If you didnt do well in chem 1301, you will fail this class. Switch to business now before you regret it. good luck  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1302 - I literally had to purposely fail so I could retake it because he's such a bad teacher. If you're able to learn a heavy math-based course by just watching a professor talk from slides that are just copied and paste from the textbook then this is the class for you. But, you might as well teach yourself to be quite honest. He also likes to assign OWL's that total to a minimum of 70 questions per chapter (which includes the mastery and multimedia assignments) that must be finished within 2 weeks of the tests, that covers about 2-3 chapters. In total, that's 140-210 homework questions due within 2 weeks to cover 2-3 chapters, so don't take other hard or workload courses with this one. Don't even bother wasting your time with this man though, seriously find any other option.  - Grade In Class:F

Comments:Chem 1302 - Dr.Hassel does not play. His tests are 17 multiple choice and application based. With that said, I disagree in the opinion that he is easy. I believe his class is not impossible but it is inaccurate to say that you can pass without trying. I worked extremely hard this semester. The fact that his tests were only 17 questions were the reason it was hard to maintain a good grade. I turned to him for help and he was tremdously hemplful because to me...his SI was shit! And his SI was confusing as hell. In class, Hassel lectures and you fill in printed off powerpoint sheets, so you can imagine some people got bored and worked on other thing. I recommend this professor to people that are willing to work very hard outside of class. If you are a person that must be engaged during lecture I recommend someone else.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2019-05-17

Comments:1302 - This course is definitely a step up from 1301, but a good grade is achievable if the effort it put in. You can earn up to 113% on every exam and up to 115% on the final. He also replaces your lowest exam score with your final exam score. There are daily quizzes for attendance purposes, but they are only two questions that add up to an exam grade at the end of the semester that help raise your grade if you do well! I had many health problems over the course of the semester, but Dr. Hassell was always willing to work with me. He even reopened the homework that I was unable to complete while I was sick/injured, which helped raise my grade at the end of the semester so that I wouldn't fail the class. He is the sweetest man you will probably ever meet in your Baylor career. I would highly recommend taking Dr. Hassell's class if you have the opportunity!  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1301 - Dr. Hassell's class is fantastic. Even though I didn't receive the grade I wanted to, I blame that on my own slacking, not on his teaching or exams. He provides fill in the blank PowerPoints that can be printed or downloaded. You can score up to 113% of every unit exam and up to 115% on the final. He always offers extra credit within the OWL homework as well. His SI is fantastic! Overall, I would highly recommend taking Dr. Hassell's class. It is not hard to earn a good grade in this class if you put in a little effort!  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:CHE 1405 - TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I am the absolute worst person at science and thought that chemistry was going to kill me and my GPA. I was so wrong. This is one of the easiest classes that I have taken so far. Every single test is open-note and there are maybe two take-home assignments. I didn't study for this class once, I didn't even buy the textbook that was required. Dr. Hassel is so nice and the sweetest man ever. I did see him snap at a couple of students this semester for being rude in his class (talking during his lectures) but other than that he is an angel. I stopped by his office recently and we had the nicest talk ever. It really made me wish that I had stopped by earlier this semester and gotten to know him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - I dropped because I didn't have a good background and I wanted to actually learn and not just get by. He was a really good teacher I just had a lot of other challenging courses. The workload was a lot but I think it is helpful to learn.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Date: 2019-04-17

Comments:1301 - This class is so easy. He prints out fill in the blank notes to go along with the powerpoints that you can use on the tests. All of the questions on the test are in the notes also. Easy 100. You have to write one paper, but you get to choose the topic, and he grades pretty leniently. Lectures are boring, but it is easy to make an A in this class without doing any work or even studying. 10/10 would recommend.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301/1302 - Dr. Hassell is a sweet old dude who really knows a lot about chemistry. His lectures are super boring and hard to follow because he’s basically just reading a power point that just restates what the textbook says. He takes attendance by giving daily quizzes so make sure to read or skim over the terms and definitions before class. He says he has someone grade them but I think they’re pretty much participation credit, you just can’t afford to miss a class. Homework is through Owl and he’s still kinda figuring out how to use it. Originally he assigned homework that took almost 12 hours a piece to do. I KID YOU NOT. But there’s lots of extra credit offered on Owl so it helped boost grades. His tests are VERY fair. They’re 17 questions but he grades it out of 15 which gives you some wiggle room. Just make sure know the material well. I finished 1301 with a high A in his class but 1302 I was just shy of an A by a hair and he was not willing to round it up, which is understandable given how much extra credit he offers but I literally missed it by a tenth of a point. If you took AP chem in high school, 1301 is a breeze but 1302 was harder for me, partially because I couldn’t bring myself to pay attention in his class anymore. He made us go over 2 chapters more than most classes because he said it would prepare us better for ochem. If you want an easy(ish) A but with extra work, take Hassell. If you want to actually grasp the material, maybe look someplace else.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - I really liked Dr. Hassle for 1301. If you were good at HS chem you will be fine in this class. His lectures are really boring, but he tries his best to make it fun. His tests are all 17 multiple choice, but he drops 2 so it's graded out of 15. Most of your learning will come from Owlv2, which is the online HW. If you try and learn while doing it you will be good to go. 4 exams and he drops the lowest, final counts for 2, and daily grade and online HW both count as a test grade. Very good chance at an A if you try. Taking him for chem 2 as well. That's where it becomes all new material unless you took AP chem. Same structure as chem 1 so you may as well take him again if you take chem 1 with him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-03

Comments:1301/1302 - Wonderful man with a great passion for chemistry; however, his age may be getting the best of him as lecture has become reading printed powerpoint notes and observing worked out solutions to practice problems. Online homework can take a long time, but very easy 100+. I'm finishing both of these semesters needing less than a 50 on both finals for an A. With that being said, I would recommend this professor to everyone who took AP chemistry and made a 3+, and people who like to learn on their own. Test formats are 17 multiple choice questions graded out of 15. With four tests and a final of 23 questions graded out of 20, this class stratifies those who do not know chemistry and those who do. Probably the easiest A for me, but that is due to my prior learning of all the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-04-30

Comments:1301 - Honestly horrible at explaining concepts and not helpful. Would not recommend taking this class!! I took chem 1 and 2 in high school and still didn't do as well as I wanted. If you can self teach from the book and have time for that, then maybe.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2018-01-08

Comments:1301 - Aight so Dr. Hassell is not that bad. If you have taken AP Chem, TAKE HIM. trust me the ratings look scary but take my word for it he's very fair and his class is not that bad. THE SI SAVES LIVES. I kid you not she put a question on her practice test that literally was on the test the very next day. You just had to know that the answer choice was B. Anyways I appreciated his office hours and although in lecture he's pretty boring, he overall is someone that really cares for you if you actually care about the class. He gives a lot of extra credit and do the extra credit early because you're not going to want to do it later. I recommend that you: 1. do the owl (online HW) a little bit every night 2. Do practice problems 3. GO TO SI 4. Do the SI practice test. 5. Chill, it's gen chem and you can do it!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-19

Comments:CHEM 1301 - As a professor, Dr. Hassell is a funny old man who makes jokes that aren't always funny. However, he really cares about his students and will work with you during office hours. Quizzes are at the beginning of class and are mostly vocabulary. In addition, he drops a few of the quiz grades. These quiz grades accumulate into a test grades, and he weighs them the same as the hw, tests and finals. You have four tests, OWL hw, your quiz grade, and the final (counted twice). He takes the seven highest grades and averages them, which is a really advantageous method for the students. Overall, Dr. Hassell may be boring in class sometimes, but his SI is very helpful and he is great at explaining things during office hours. His tests aren\'t too hard, you just have to study and go to most of the SI sessions so you can get practice tests. Also, if you\'ve taken AP Chem, his class is nowhere near as hard. If you can self teach and go to the SI sessions and do the OWL hw, you should make an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-16

Comments:che 1405 - Relatively easy class if you consider that this is a chemistry class. He wants you to get a good grade. He is very passionate about the subject. He gives out quizzes every day but I have this theory that they are completion grade only cause I got full points despite often not knowing the answers to the questions. His assignments are super easy. His tests are a little bit hard but multiple choice.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-15

Comments:1301 - Dr. Hassell was not an awful teacher, but I would stay away from taking him. He has a 2 question daily quiz at the beginning of every class which are very difficult, but if you read and study the definitions ahead of time it should be fine. I don't even think he grades them, it may just be an attendance grade because I had a 97 at the end of the semester for the daily quizzes, and I know for sure that I missed a good amount of questions. His lectures are so boring, it is so hard to pay attention. I always did the Owl homework during his class, and I noticed a lot of other people did that too. The Owl is super helpful, it is basically the only way I learned chemistry at all. There is also a lot of extra credit which will definitely boost your grade. DO THE OWL ASSIGNMENTS!! They are due on test days, and, sometimes they can be very long (a couple chapters took me over 20 hours to finish) so make sure you get started ahead of time. And go to SI. His SI was extremely helpful, and I learned so much more in SI than his lecture. His tests are only 17 questions, and he omits 2 questions, so you cannot miss many to make an A on the test. Some of his tests were really easy, and some were really hard. He's also not the nicest, but if you go to his office hours he will help you understand. He has four tests with the lowest grade dropped, and his final is counted as 2 test grades. Overall, his class and tests are very doable, but there are much better chemistry professors.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2017-12-14

Comments:1301 - Ok, I don't know what to say to all those who claimed that Dr. Hassell's lectures weren't helpful, because I personally thought that his lectures were very helpful. He covered pretty much everything on the test in his lectures, even doing practice problems similar to those on the test. I found his tests super easy-they were all 17 multiple choice problems. People complain about his daily quizzes being "impossible," but I really don't think they were hard. The point is that you are supposed to read ahead in the book and have finished reading the chapter by the time we started it in class. If you haven't done the reading or had chemistry before, yeah the quizzes are hard. If you put in the work you will learn. Even though he has hundreds of students, Dr. Hassell honestly cares about his students and wants them all to succeed. Be warned: if he sees you doing something that isn't chemistry during his class (i.e. sleeping, reading a book, trying to leave in the middle of class) he WILL call you out in front of the whole class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-14

Comments:CHE1301 - His class is interesting in the fact that you learn most of the material on the test on your own from the SI. he gives a quiz daily, which are combined into a test grade at the end, and most of them are almost impossible. the tests are easy in the beginning(they get harder), make sure to practice the math as much as possible, it's most of the test. His leisure is rarely helpful and can be confusing, and office hours are similar. Great for those who like to self-teach, or have taken AP Chemistry.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2017-06-30

Comments:1405 - This class was ridiculously easy! If you pay attention to his lectures and occasionally read the book you will be fine. If you are doing poorly toward the end of the semester, make sure you do really well on the book report (which is basically a given) and have a good topic for your final paper! I wouldn't say his was the most enjoyable class, but I don't find chemistry enjoyable so......  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 & 1302 - First off, if you're going to take Hassell, I would recommend taking him both semesters because you'll adjust to his class very quickly. I did not take AP Chem in high school so I found Chem 1 to be more difficult than most of my peers did, that being said it was pretty doable (I ended the class with an 87) I found that his lectures weren't too helpful and it was more of a self-taught class especially Chem 2. GO TO SI. That helped me TONS. (although the current SI is graduating so idk if the new one will be any good but still try it out) Also, do the old practice tests on BearCat before the tests (he uploads previous tests online). I found that I learned the most through doing the Mastering Chemistry, the online homework we are assigned, (as in actually trying) and then going to his test reviews that he holds the day before the test to ask questions. His tests are nice because they're 17 questions all multiple choice and he drops 2 questions, so he grades it out of 15. Thus, you can miss 2 questions and get 100 on the test. On the final, it is 23 questions and he drops three of them. The worst part of the class is his daily quizzes, which are usually just the bolded words in the textbook. I definitely didn't do too well on those. You also get one drop test grade at the end of the semester. While he wasn't the world's best teacher, I think the self taught nature of the class really teaches you how to study and will prepare you for upper level courses. After adjusting to his class, his tests and his style of teaching, I was able to end Chem 2 with an A second semester.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-12

Comments:1302 - Dr. Hassell is not as bad as how most of the reviews say he is. I would say that he is not the best teacher but not the worst he is more of a backup teacher. I like that he is a gentleman very educated and with alot of manners. He is helpful in office hours (I only went there twice) some say he is a jerk there idk he was nice to me. He doesn't know how to teach the material as he makes it very complicated but people also dont learn because they are always on their phones and laptops so if you avoid this you can understand him. It helps alot if you have either IB or AP chem knowledge as it will make things smoother. If you dont its ok just going to have to put in more effort. He give out mastering chem like all other teachers some say its alot I thought it was ok not too bad (Know that although its not alot MC doesnt help with test at all) Also do the adaptive follow ups as those are extra credit he gave me a 111 for my MC grade pretty sure it was cuz of that. His attendance and daily grade are 2 question quizzes he gives everyday he says that you are suppose to read for the quizzes YEAH NO! I didnt read and passed most of them failed some of them, but here is the thing he drops a huge amount of them so I eneded up getting a 100 when i was expecting like an 85. Test ok so there are four test you hear alot of people say that they are very hard. WELL THEY ARE NOT THAT HARD. I failed the first one (Didnt study for it at all or like for 30 min assuming that it was gonna be like 1301) Next 2 test I got a 100 and last one an 80. He gives two extra credit question on his test so if you miss 2 you get a 100. Test are 17 questions long he even gives you extra time to finish after the class is over. Final IT IS NOT THAT BAD I made a 90 in it. The other thing is that it counts twice replacing your lowest grade. Final is 23 question and 3 are extra credit. He has 7 total grades (the average will be your overall grade for the semester) which all count the same so do your daily grade and MC cuz they count as a test grade. He drops lowest grade out of all except for the final. Overall he is a good teacher not the best not the worst, his class or chem 1302 is harder than 1301 in general, but really people exaggerate on how difficult they think it is. I recommend him but if you can get Hudson or another teacher then take them. P.S. SI was great supper good and chill. But he is graduation this summer so idk what will happend with that.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-08

Comments:1301 - Not a great teacher unless you are good at chemistry. His handwriting is cryptic sometimes. If you have a good background when it comes to chem you'll be fine if not find someone else.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2017-05-06

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is amazing!! The class is not a lot of work, the tests are open note and I only used the chapter summaries out of the book and got high 80's every time without any kind of studying. You have a quiz every day but it's one point for the right answer and one point for just showing up so go to class. He's a really sweet guy and he's super willing to help you out if you just ask him. Theres a research paper over whatever you want and an easy book report.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-01

Comments:1405 - His tests were open note but the slideshows that he went over in class usually had little to nothing to do with the test. If you are a good test taker then this class might be easy but I felt I did a lot on my own and read and took notes and still could not figure out what would be on the test because he pulls little bits from the textbook making it nearly impossible to prepare. Printing out the summaries was helpful for the quizzes because usually it was a vocab word mentioned in the summaries. Not a horrible class but I certainly wouldn't take it again.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-04-11

Comments:CHEM 1301 - Not a great teacher, but an easy A if you are a good tester. The class is structured to be all test grades- each test across the class, a test grade for the quizzes, a test grade for the mastering chemistry homework, and the final. He drops one, so basically the quizzes don't matter if you don't want to read the book. I just did the mastering chemistry in class. Just print out all the practice tests from the test bank (ask the TA for the link) and you'll be fine. Half the questions are straight from old tests!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-04-05

Comments:1302 - He is an awful teacher. his nots are only fill in the blank and are taken straight from the book. He never expands on topics, and speeds through the chapters. Only 2 lectures per chapter no more even if he doesn't finish the chapter. He's a nice person kind of he told me I was going to Hell so that was fun. He likes to rant in class about religion and how we are never going to be doctors. Even those who took AP chem are stuggling. Don't take him if you can avoid it. His tests fluctuate in difficulty so you can never predict whats going to happen. Also you have to memorize all the equations. His S.I. is really good though, he's also very vulgar and yells at us a lot so....  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-03-17

Comments:1301 - I took this class my first semester right after I took AP Chemistry in high school. Because I had already somewhat learned the material, this class was easy with a very light workload. We had to do mastering chemistry for each chapter and that would take about an hour or a little longer to complete. We had four tests each over about three chapters. They were 17 questions, but he only graded them out of 15 so you could miss two and still get a 100. Also, we had access to all of his old tests which greatly resemble his new tests which was very helpful. Overall, this class was very easy because I had seen the material before. It would have been a little more difficult if I had not taken AP Chemistry before, but it is still definitely doable.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-14

Comments:1301 - I thought this class was doable. If you read the chapter before the lecture you'll be ready for the daily quizzes (overall daily quiz grade=1 test grade) he gives and the tests. The tests were easy and fair (17 multiple choice questions and he omits 2, so you can get a maximum of 113%) but the only downside is that they are cumulative. I also thought his SI was helpful because we would do practice problems that were typically harder than what would be on tests. Also, there are old tests on bearcat so those are effective for studying. Most importantly, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT LEAVE MASTERING CHEMISTRY FOR THE LAST MINUTE. You will not finish because it takes forever, however it is not difficult; it is easy to get an A (even over 100%), which is beneficial because it counts as a test grade. Overall, I thought this class was an easy A because the concepts were not difficult to learn, and you have many opportunities to get a good grade!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-01

Comments:1301 - I LOVE DR HASSELL. His class is very doable if you pay attention and his tests are insanely easy compared to what they could be. This class is an easy A if you have ever taken chem before.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-11-21

Comments:1405 - Chemistry and Society is an incredibly easy class. Often I would write papers for other classes while sitting in lecture. Similarly the lab was very easy usually about things like weighing rocks or adding water to candy. The only downside of this class was that Hassell's expectations were sometimes unreal. His tests were open note but often the things on the test had never been covered in class. Also he handwrites his slideshow notes but his handwriting is mostly inlegible.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2016-05-17

Comments:1302 - Let me start off by saying that Dr. Hassell's class is not very easy so if that's what you're looking for I'd choose someone else. I got a B in his 1301, but I took him second semester again and it is WAY harder. However, Dr. Hassell puts up his old tests on BearCat so that helps a bunch with studying. I had an 85 going into the final, and I got a 100 so he bumped me up to an A. It was not an easy class, but you will definitely learn what you need to. One thing about Dr. Hassell that is different is that only about half of his test questions are conceptual, the rest are math. 4 Tests, Mastering Chemistry, Daily Questions which you need to read the book to get right, drop the lowest and add 2x the final and that's your grade. Very simple. Very reasonable. If you do take Dr. Hassell I recommend doing the reading every night so you can drop your lowest test grade in case you bomb one, and also the Mastering Chem is SUPER long but an easy A+. Overall I'd recommend Dr. Hassell if you want to learn the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-05-06

Comments:1301 - Dr. Hassel's class is an easy A course, you don't have to do a lot of work in his course, just mastering chemistry and his daily quizzes. HIs daily quizzes are are question everyday usually something from the book that you will know if you just skim over the chapters the day before class. Sometimes he is bad at explaining concepts, but he does have helpful test review sessions. I recommend that you go to the SI for this course because he help explain concepts in a way that is easier to understand. If you go to SI and go over past tests then you should be fine for this course. Overall it is an easy A course and I recommend taking him!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-02-06

Comments:1301 - PROS: Easy A, past exams are available and they are very similar to his current tests (17 multiple questions and 3 of them are bonus & for the final, there are 23 questions and 2 of them are bonus), he offers test reviews, he's funny and sweet, minimum amount of work (only MasteringChem). CONS: I've only gone to his office hour 2 times, but he wasn't SUPER nice and friendly, which is surprising because he is really sweet in class, bad hand writing, no power points, he isn't great at explaining concepts. I did IB Chemistry in high school so i had easier time, but i learnt this from other students. If you go to SI you don't have to do extra studying. You can just read your notes and do his past exams for practice in preparation for his exams. AND there is quiz before every class (just one question). If you read the bolded and italicized terms and review your class notes, you should be good. However, if you have weak background in Chemistry, you may have to read the book before class to get the concept...but then again you can drop the class quizzes since they count as an exam grade all together. Overall, TAKE HIM FOR AN EASY A  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-02-06

Comments:1301 - There are 7 grades in the class: Mastering Chemistry (you will have to try to get below 95% on this, but it is so time consuming), daily quizzes (usually pretty easy esp. if you read the book), 4 tests, & a final (counts as 2 grades). He drops 1 of these (except the final) & the tests are 17 questions but only 15 of them are graded. Final is longer, obviously. All multiple choice, pretty easy if you pay attention. I remembered nothing from chem in high school & this class was a breeze. Don't fall for his friendliness in lecture, though, he is a kind of a jerk @ office hours. Lecture if pretty boring, but worth it. All in all, easy class but learned a lot. Take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-12-31

Comments:1301 - He gives daily quizzes everyday and they end up being equivalent to an exam grade. His exams are multiple choice which I personally hate because you could make a very small error and lose 7% instead of just partial points. The difference between an A and a B+ came down to getting one too many multiple choice questions wrong on the final.....very frustrating ending with a 89.3. He's a very sweet man though. Good intentions.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2015-12-25

Comments:1301 - Nice teacher and I really enjoyed taking his class. Sometimes he can put you to sleep but he's a great professor. His tests are not that difficult nor is his final exam. I was not so good in chemistry and failed the ap test; however, i ended up doing well in this course.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-12-17

Comments:1301 - He is a very nice man and really wants his students to excel in his class. There are daily quizzes which compile into a test grade at the end of the semester (general questions from reading the book), three test, a final that counts twice and mastering chemistry. Read the book, study the definitions, understand the material and review his old tests and you will be fine. Easy class if you just keep up with your stuff. He can be pretty funny also. Oh, and you get to drop one grade. Overall, great intro class he explains concepts well and gives tons of examples in class of problems just be careful his handwriting is a bit messy and he moves right along so if you fall behind on notes in class don't linger on it, go back later to figure it out.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-12-15

Comments:1301 - He is a really nice guy, but can be tough when you don't try or skip class. He cares about you actually learning the material. His tests are 17 questions and grades them out of 15 so they're fairly easy if you study a lot. Probably the best chem teacher out there.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-11-16

Comments:1301 - I loved this man, definitely taking him for 1302. His quizzes daily are easy, MasteringChem is easy, and as long as you do his previous tests on BearCat you should do just fine on tests. Take him for an easy A/B.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-10-13

Comments:1301 - Quizzes everyday based on required reading. They're super easy if you just scan the chapter the day before. I outlined the chapter before each class and that helped me SO MUCH. There are extra points on every test so getting over 100% is totally possible. The mastering chemistry isn't hard at all. He's bland and doesn't make lectures super fun but the tests are super straight forward and if you pay attention in class and take notes you'll be just fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1405 - I took this class as a first semester freshman business major and it was more than frustrating for me. If you enjoyed chemistry in high school because you liked the math, as I did, do not take this class. This class is purely conceptual, which means you have to memorize a lot of stuff you'll never need to know in the future if you're studying something completely different than chemistry. This class is made up of 4 tests, a short paper, a book report, a daily average for attendance and reading, and the lab grade. You can drop your lowest section, with the exception of the labs and the paper. Hassell is less than articulate and is the definition of old school - he hasn't even signed up for Blackboard and posts test grades outside his office and uses transparent rolls that aren't efficient in the slightest. He also shows lots of hilariously terrible science movies. He makes you read a book that he helped write to attempt to make chemistry fun, but it is literarily unbearable to sit through. His tests are open note and there is never anything that he lectures on in the test. I personally would make copies of chapter summaries and the glossary and paste them in my notes, which got me low Bs without studying. Also, don't do 8AM lab, because you will sleep through it at least once. I would look elsewhere for an easy science class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is a great professor! He's such a cute, grandfatherly man who really cares about his students. This class wasn't too hard- he knew we were all non-major students, and respected that, and tried his best to make it interesting for us. If you have to take Chemistry, hope you get Dr. Hassell.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Chemistry 1301 - He's a VERY sweet guy but a very boring professor. There are four tests, a quiz grade averaged from your daily quizzes (which you can just google), mastering chemistry, and the final. They are all equally weighted which is VERY HELPFUL! You can drop one of the 4 tests, but not the final. Mastering chemistry due before class starts on test day. If you just print his old tests off the library website under reserves and do a couple of them, you'll do fine! I didn't pay much attention in class because it was so boring but I still did well. If you can force yourself to pay attention, you'll probably make an easy A.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Chemistry - He tells you the same stories every.single.day. you go to class. Funny at first maybe but gets old. If you're planning on being able to read his notes on the over head he uses... good luck. It's equivalent to chicken scratch from a third grader. Means well and is a brilliant guy but so difficult to take notes and learn in class. Not hard tests though and overall not a bad class  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1405 - Best chemistry class and teacher everrrr! Even if you fail a test you can make up for it by completing the MasteringChemistry assignments online. It'll boost that test grade to a 70...but it helps beacuse the majority of his grades come from the daily quiz grades, research paper, lab, and book report. and you can drop one test grade (which includes the final, so you dont have to take it if you are satisfied with your grade). Oh and all of his tests are open book. SO TAKE GOOD NOTES!..even though he gets kinda boing in lecture...and go to class everyday  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - I had also taken Hassell in chem 1301 and he was great! The first day of Chem 1302 was pretty smoothe, however going throughout the semester there were extreme differences in his teaching style that were different from Chem 1301. The material he was teaching didn't really get into anyone's head and stay there. In 1302 he didn't really explain things to the full extent that he should have. He is extremely nice and helpful if you go to his office. He is the type of professor that if you get to know him, he will smile and wave at you if you see walking up and down the halls. He talks about Christianity a lot so that is a big plus and tells you how to get involved in Waco as well. There is a quiz everyday in the class. The quizzes are random over information that you "should have read" before class." They were extremely random and sometimes were super difficult because it wasn't just a bold word from the book. There are 4 tests and the final. He will either drop your lowest test or half the final (if the final is your lowest grade.) Do NOT wait till the last minute to do your mastering chemistry. It is usually pretty hard and really long. All in all, Hassell is a below average teacher for Chem 2 and a good teacher for Chem 1. However, you must consider the fact that Chem 2 is just a hard class period. If you take his class, be sure to ask questions and go to his office if you are looking for that solid A. Good luck in Chem 1302! Hassell is super fun and funny.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1405 - I came into this class as a senior with a 3.93, having only gotten 1 B+ while at Baylor (and another B studying abroad). Dr. Hassell is the most frustrating professor I've ever had at Baylor. As a religion major, I can struggle with sciences, and so I took this hoping it would be relatively easy for me to understand. As I sat in class, I thought it would be; Hassell is incredibly boring, but the material's basic enough. But when I took the (open note) tests, none of the material I'd learned in class was on them! It would be like if Hassell had taught us basic math, and then expected us to solve algebra problems on the test. No opportunities for extra credit, and he's extremely inflexible with grades, technology (he still uses an overhead projector, posts his test grades on the second floor of the BSB, and uses illustrative articles from over 30 years ago), and generally everything. He even refused to cancel class for the West memorial, when Ken Starr suggested everyone at Baylor suspend business as usual and PRESIDENT OBAMA was on campus. I'm beyond frustrated with this man, this class, and the hit my GPA will take. Because I took this class instead of astronomy, I may well lose tens of thousands of dollars in fellowship money for grad school, just because of Hassell's ego and inflexibility. Avoid if you can.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Don\'t take Dr. Hassell unless you are incredibly patient. He rambles incessantly, repeats himself, and writes on the overhead film illegibly in poor use of the English language. Easy to pass, have to try to make an A. If you want to get something out of your education, take a different class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - Hassell is just amazing. If you want to come out of taking chemistry in college for the first feeling good, take him. His teaching is kind of slow and confusing at times, but if you go in to ask for help, he is extremely useful. GO TO SI!!!! These help a ton when working out old tests, practice problems etc... Mastering Chemistry is kind of tough for homework, but there is extrapoints on it that will help you on your final grade! DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO MASTERING CHEMISTRY. This will kill you in the class. The tests are pretty easy and all the old tests from past years are posted on BearCat. Use those to your advantage! Overall a wonderful class, and the stories he tells (over again) are extremely funny. He has a great personality and a passion for chemistry! Take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This class was the worst. I like and respect most professors, but this guy pushed my buttons. First, if you are sensitive to annoying voices, DO NOT take this man. He manages to talk high pitched and like a hick at the same. He also has a temper and he WILL yell at you if you piss him off. I\'ve never had another professor raise his voice in class at all. As far as the actual work goes, his every day quizzes are in general pretty easy, but sometimes they were totally obscure and random. He gives a TON of problems for mastering chem, do not wait til the last minute to do them. The extra credit from online homework can be very helpful to your grade, because you won\'t learn very much in class to help on the tests. The only redeeming quality of this class is that you can go on Bearcat and find his old tests, which mirror the test he\'ll give you exactly. That\'s the only way I found to study for the tests that worked. Go to SI if you can. Good luck with this guy!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - Hassel is stuck in his old ways and terrible at teaching. He still uses transparency paper even though there's a document camera that you can use regular paper with. He smudges and smears it and doesn't write legibly when he teaches. Also, he will call you out in front of the entire class and embarrass you if you ever need to leave during the middle of his class and you haven't talked to him before, which is rude and unnecessary. His tests are very short and the questions on the test do not reflect the questions on the review.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 1302 - Dr. Hassell is one of the nicest science professors at Baylor. I took Young for CHE 1301 and found 1302 to be a bit challenging with Hassell because I wasn't very prepared. However, if you're diligent about Mastering Chemistry and you really take the time to learn the material, you will do fine in this class. SI sessions helped a lot too and was the best way for me to learn the material. The reason this class is so great is because Dr. Hassell is so nice and will randomly make funny sidenotes in the middle of lecturing. Also, he's very generous with extra credit. I would highly recommend Dr. Hassell.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-10-18

Comments:1301&02 - He's not amazing at explaining concepts. He pretty much just works problems all class, which is helpful if you understand his way of working stuff, but if you do things a different way, you'll basically just sitting there in class and teaching yourself from the book. Reading the chapter before class will help you understand him in class. And there is a attendance quiz everyday, generally over something like a vocab word from the chapter or simple concept. The final grade is calculated from 4 tests (17 q's on each-15 count), the final which counts twice, the daily quiz average, and your Mastering Chemistry average, which is sometimes curved up or down. One of those scores is dropped and the whole thing divided by 7. The Mastering Chem is pretty time consuming, and he assigns the exact same amount in the summer as during the semester, so if you take hime in the summer, you will spend the bulk of your time doing a ton of mastering chemistry. Also, people say that he is super easy at 1301 and really hard at 1302. That may be true, but it's probably more true that 1301 has so much review of high school chem that it's not too hard to teach yourself from the book and keep up. You can't do that as easily in 1302. (I had him for both, A in 01, B+ in 02 - he doesn't round at all) I would definitely recommend him from 1301, and also for 1302 DURING THE SEMESTER, not in the summer.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - I HIGHLY recommend this professor to anyone who has taken AP Chemistry... To anyone who hasn't, I strongly DISCOURAGE you from taking him. Take Hodson instead. Hassell has a bad tendency to ramble on about useless stuff and usually doesn't teach you what needs to be known on the test. If you've taken AP chemistry already (not regular high school chemistry), this is a review course. SO EASY! You can get over 100 on every test, including the easy final exam. For 1302, I heard he is horrible at teaching and heard not to take him at all costs! If you're good at chemistry, take him. If not, don't...  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-05-10

Comments:CHE 1402 (Chem II) - This class is SO easy. You can make up to a 114 on any test, over 100 on your MasteringChem and then he drops your lowest grade. Lecture is boring, but he doesn't make it any more clear than the book does. Take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-05-09

Comments:CHE 1401 - This guy rocks. He doesn't teach on what is on the test, it is almost all from the book. Its open notes tests. I did nothing in this class, before the each test I would study for like 6-10 hours the night before and read through all the material in the book. People literally would make copies of the whole book and bring that as their notes. He also drops your lowest grade which is awesome and makes it so you don't have to take the final. He makes funny jokes in class, not because the jokes themselves are funny but because he says them they are funny. He is super likable and his class is super easy, I highly recommend him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is a funny professor who has a passion for chemistry. For those of you who just need a science credit, there is hardly any work, but make sure you take pretty good notes in class or you won't have a clue on the tests, which I thought were kind of hard. Overall, not a stressful class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - Overall, Hassel is a great guy who loves what he does. He is interested in the subject and tries to help make chemistry more relatable. His grading system is pretty simple. 8 grades - 3 tests, a 1500 word research paper, a book report over a book he helped write, a lab grade, a daily quiz grade (1 pt for showing up and 1 pt for getting the answer right), and the final. He drops the lowest grade, so if you do well the entire semester you can choose not to take the final and use that as your dropped grade. His tests aren\'t over anything he lectures about and it\'s difficult to find out where his questions come from. They are, however, open note tests. Read the chapters and print off summaries from the back of each chapter. Also, write down all the vocab. It wasn\'t as easy as I anticipated but it was much better than any other chem class!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1405 - You can tell that he's a very nice man with high values. You can tell that he tries to make the class interesting and he gets very offended if people talk during his class. I honestly think it's more important to pay attention to the book than the lectures because it gives you a better overall idea of what the tests are going to be over. The grades consist of your lab grade, 4 tests, a book report(over a book he published, go figure!), and a 1500 word research paper. Each of these things are weighted equally and one of the grades(besides the research paper and lab grade) may be dropped which definitely helps your grade. His tests are all multiple choice and only thirty questions long. You are allowed to use notes on the tests which means you should take as many notes as possible and definitely know them well. He is overall a really sweet man that's very in love with chemistry.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-11-17

Comments:1405 - I took this to fulfill the lab requirement. To begin, Dr. Hassell is very nice and respects his students. BUT, his lectures are boring and nothing he discusses in class--what you write down--is on any of the exams. For that I suggest purchasing the textbook online code and printing off all the PowerPoints. Had everything for the exams. Speaking of which, there are four exams--the final is optional. He drops your lowest component grade--except the lab portion. Overall, I think the key to succeeding in this class is staying organized and using alternate sources of information. You also have to write a book report over a ridiculously dumb book and a research paper, but just use Wikipedia. Would I recommend Hassell? Yes, just realize he's very disorganized and his lectures are pointless. The only reason I came to class is because he takes attendance via daily "quizzes."  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-05-11

Comments:1405 - Given, this Chemistry class is only for non-science majors, but there is no reason you can't get an A. There are only 8 graded assignments: 4 tests, a research paper(which I've heard he doesn't read all of them), a book report over a book he wrote, daily quizzes (which are only on the easiest of vocab from the chapters we are supposed to read) and the lab grade. I spent probably an hour outside of class every week preparing for this class. I didn't have to take the final because he drops the lowest grade. Dr. Hassell is a sweet man and is full of crazy stories. He was even on Oprah and will tell you the whole story if you stop in his office hours. I have to admit though that sometimes I didn't pay attention at all in class, I mostly wrote letters to my pen-pals back home. If you are ready to be done with science with an A take Dr. Hassell.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHEM 1405 - Where do we start? First, Dr. Hassell is a nice man. I think he sincerely wants his students to do well. But...he is unorganized. There are three tests and a final. The tests are open note, but as others have said, don't let that fool you: They are insanely difficult. The lecture notes aren't helpful at all; I just printed the PowerPoints off the Pearson website and brought them to class on exam days. In fact, if you can, try to just buy the online access code instead of the textbook. Honestly, I never read the text and still did well on tests. And last point, he takes attendance via daily quizzes...  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - I recommend him for 1301 most definately. Go to SI and review old tests in the reserve room and you should have no trouble getting an A. Very sweet man, always told us God Bless at the end of class, told corny jokes to wake some back up. Nothing on Blackboard. Attendance quiz on a scrap of paper, generally asking the definition of some vocab word. 4 test, final(2x), mastering chem, attendance quiz average. minus the lowest one and divide by 7. Many ppl found going to class tiresome and boring, but it could have been much worse, we never had real quizzes and the test are 2/5ths conceptual plus every test is curved so you can miss 2 questions and still have a 100. Advice= study old test, and if you can find someone with old test more recent than the ones he released to bearcat then youre in great shape.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - In hichschool, i only took one chemistry course and i had the worst teacher. i didnt learn anything in that class except the very basics (and i mean very basic). If you have a strong science and your mind does good with science related material, you should be good. for the first 3 tests, i studied at the minimum like 30 minute and made A's on all of them. i failed the fourth test but thats because it was more detailed information and i had skipped 2 classes back to back. but after that, i read up on the material, went to the review session for the final, and made a 105 on the final and passed the class with an A...just take him  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is such a sweet old man. The class isnt really hard at all. Everyday at the beginning of class you have a quiz over a vocab word from one of the previous chapters you were supposed to have read. All of his test are 30 multiple choice and all open note. I found the powerpoints on the online website really helpful for the tests although his lectures dont really prepare you for the test. There is a book report over a book that he wrote which consist of about answering 20 questions or so, and the book isnt really that boring. There is also an easy research paper that will definetly help your grade. This is a pretty easy class and I would recommend taking it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1405 - I'm not a huge chemistry fan, but this class was actually very easy! Th lectures were interesting to listen to, and Dr. Hassell is such a nice man. However, his lectures do not prepare you for the test at all. If you keep up with the readings and go to class, then this class should be a very, very easy A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - I have no idea why this guy's rating is so low! Get into this class! Coming from someone who HATES chemistry, this class was a breeze! Just stay on top of mastering chemistry and be present for the daily attendance quiz question. When its time for a test, do some previous tests from the online course reserves and study the info you see because the same type of questions appear on the test! Good Luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Che. 1301 - Hassel is a very good teacher, I just found it hard to learn in there because the class was so large. He knows everything about chemistry and is very helpful. The multiple choice tests are pretty easy as long as you're familiar with the material. All his tests are 17 questions but he only grades out of 15 so you can make a 113 or miss 2 and still make a 100. GO TO SI. That is where I learned almost if not everything. The reason I gave an average workload is because MastergChemistry is a punk! It takes a crazy long time to do so you can't procrastinate it. As long as you do it with 1 or 2 partners you'll be fine though.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1301 - Greetings and Salutations! Dr. Hassell is a the typical sweet old man, and a decent professor, just with a hard subject. Coming from a backround where I learned virtually nothing in high school chemistry, the class was hard, yet managable. You definately need to read the book and attend the SIs if you are new to chemistry. The class has daily quizes, of which 50% is your name and the other half is if you answer a vocab question from the chapter; if you get the answer remotely right he gives you full credit. another part is the Mastering Chemistry, which takes time, but not too much effort. The tests are straightforward. If you understand the review questions from the book and the SI sessions you'll do fine on the tests, which are all multiple choice. There are 17 question tests that are graded out of 15, which gives a possible 114 on a test. He uses a projecter for lectures, which can get a bit annoying, but overall a decent professor!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - He is a very sweet old man who is really understanding but this class is ridiculously hard. The tests are not over vocab words or things he talks about in class but over the nitpicky details. I studied for every test EXTREMELY hard and never made anything higher than a 78. When you take this class just know its a ton of outside work to do well. Definitley not a blow off class  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1316 - I thought Hassel was really great. I took this chem lab during the summer, so had to hear him every day but it wasn't all bad. His tests were very doable, but I couldn't stand how old-school his teaching style was. Just transparencies on the ELMO...that's okay for working the problems, but he could do better in my opinion. Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassel is a really cute old man, but his class is much harder than expected. The concepts seem really simple, but the tests are hard. Buy the extra student study guide, do all the questions in the back of the chapters, and then you can do well. I made a mid B on the first test without that, then did that for the second test and made a 100. The daily quizzes are killer since they are only 1 question. Generally, it's a question over a vocabulary word from the reading. Instead of reading the chapters, I recommend reviewing the "Summary" page at the end of the chapter for 20 minutes. It will help you more. For tests, you get to use all the notes and handouts you want. Doable class, but expect to work for it a little bit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - DONT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A LAB SCIENCE. This class is the most aggravating class ever! Alton Hassell sucks. He's an ancient old man who doesn't use blackboard so you have no earthly clue what your grade is in the class. His tests are open notes but have absolutely no relevance to the material covered in class or in the book. His lectures jump around so much and he scribbles random stuff on the overhead that is impossible to read. At the beginning of the year, you'll think he is a sweet old professor but soon that'll change. The book report is over this DUMB book that he wrote, seriously horrible book. The good thing is that he doesnt give less than a 90 on the research paper unless its horrible so that helps the grade and the final isn't comprehensive.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Welcome to 10th grade Chemistry! I you had a good HS, this class is a breeze. If your HS failed you, or you just failed it, then you'll have to learn this time! He's really boring, but he's friendly. It is essential that you do SEVERAL of his old tests; he posts them on the library website under Course Reserves. You have to read the chapters ahead of class because he gives a one question quiz every class to take attendance. Since it's nothing more than you should have learned in HS and his old tests are available (with answer key!) there is no excuse but apathy to do poorly in this class...yet on every test somebody gets a 30... and somebody gets a 107.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2010-05-14

Comments:1405 - Hassell was not a very good professor, I would not take him again if I had to choose batween him and anyone else. You virtually do not have any idea of your grade in the class until you walk into the final and by then its pretty much too late. He is not a good teacher and his tests are open note... but most of the questions cannot be found in the notes! He really does not care if his students learn the material or do well in his class...DO NOT TAKE HIM!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-05-12

Comments:1405 - Althought it sounds easy and the material is rather basic, this is not an easy class! The main reason is because the tests are only 30 (or less) questions! Therefore, if you get more than 3 questions wrong, you no longer have an A. Some of the questions are very sample too. Overall though, this is what the class looks like: *Quizzes everyday based on a bolded term in the reading *3 tests (MC, open note) & 1 final (not comprehensive) *BORING book report that will boost your grade *1500 word research paper *lab grade He drops your lowest test. I read AND took notes over the reading for every class. Honestly, the information in the text book is A LOT more helpful than his lectures, especially since you can't read his handwriting. Definitely make chapter summarizes with all bold & italisized terms! Also, photocopy all the charts, tables, etc. I think the key to success in this class is being organized, because Dr. Hassell is not. He is a very nice who is always in his office, but this is not a good class at all. I think our class average is a high D going into the final. Only 2 or 3 people have an A. For a lab science, I would recommend something else.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301/1302 - I took both Chem I and II with Hassell. Chem I was a JOKE. Probably because it was a repeat of high school chemistry and Hassell really didn't have to teach anything. Don't be fooled though, Chem II is MUCH HARDER. Hassell doesn't teach anything and his test questions are completely random. He assigns mastering chemistry for each chapter, but the mastering chem has NOTHING to do with his exams. It is the biggest waste of time and money. He is very unorganized and spends most of class trying to fix his mircrophone or trying to figure out why he didn't come up with the right answer when he works a problem. He writes all of his notes on an overhead, in what he likes to jokingly call, "heirogliphics" I guess you have to give him credit, thats probably how they used to write in the pre-historic days when he was a child. Do not take him for Chem II, take McGrath  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - Terrible professor...very unorganized teaching. He does not use Blackboard so you will not know your grades until after class is over. The tests are extremely random and difficult because they do not pertain to the lectures or book material. You have to do a book report over a book he wrote and it was not graded until over 2 months after we turned it in. When I asked for help or asked what my grade was, Professor Hassell was rude in his response saying that he could not tell me my grade. He will let you write 2 papers to get 10 points on a test if you ask him, but won't tell the whole class. Do not take this class...it is not worth the stress and lack of organization. Plus it is much less "society" and alot more specific chemistry terms.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Worst professor I have had yet.... he is disorganized and his teaching style is so random and unhelpful. He will say that he is available for help all the time, but when you go in to his office he is less than helpful and often rude. My class did not get back grades from things due in February until the last week of class. His test questions are really random and do not always focus on what he covered in the notes. Do not take him or think that this class is a blow off class.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Hassell was not a particularly hard professor, by any means. His class was really just an annoying waste of time and a repeat of Chemistry you learned in high school. His tests aren't hard, they just take a lot of studying. They're about 30 problems or questions based on the readings and his lectures. DO THE READING! If you don't read the book his tests are really hard because he's kinda loopy and doesn't cover all of the material in his lectures. Not a bad professor, but not the best.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - I absolutely hated this class. I have never had a worse professor in my lifeeee. He doesn't explain anything in class, just starts writing things on the ELMO, he is old school and writes everything on the overhead, his handwriting is TERRIBLE and he makes alot of mistakes in class and has to go back to correct himself, which just confuses everyone. I think it is TIME for him to retire, he is getting too old to teach and forgetful. His grading is NOT fair because the grade on your mastering chemistry online score is not right. I thought I had a 93 average because thats what it said online, but then at the end of the semester he said I had an 86. He lowers your grade without teling you!!!! its ridiculous. I didnt learn anything in this class, and I am very upset about it. BIGGEST waste of my parents money yet!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM WHATEVER YOU DO!   - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1405 - This may have been the worst class I have taken at Baylor thus far. Mr.Hassell has no structure to his lectures. It honestly seems if he just flipped to a random page in the chapter and decided to structure the lecture around that. He adds a lot of personal stories into the lectures, and although its cute that he tries to be personable, the time would be better spent teaching the material. Although he never covers the chapters thoroughly, everything in the chapter is fair game for the test. There is a quiz everyday over the reading- 1 question out of 40 or so pages of material, so its very random. Tests are open note, but it honestly does not help. The tests are 30 mc questions over 5 or 6 chapters and do not cover main points. I took very detailed notes over every chapeter and my test grades still were not too hot, no one knows where he gets the questions from. There is a book report and a research paper that are both pretty easy. The lab is pointless. I am still suprised I ended up with an A, my daily/paper/book report grades saved me I guess. BUT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE A BA STUDENT LOOKING FOR A LAB SCIENCE! its not worth it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - I don't know how I got a B. This class is pointless. The quizzes are no test of your actual knowledge and the reading is so intense. The tests are 30 multiple choice questions over four or five chapters and the questions are extremely random. The tests are open note, which I thought would help, but it really doesn't. His lectures are boring and stupid. He is a nice guy and can be funny but I would recommend NEVER taking this class. It isn't worth it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - I really hated coming to his class. Hassell was boring. His tests weren't from his lectures at all (30 questions and open note...but a LOT harder than it seems). The class also includes a book report (on a "mystery" chemistry novel that is annoying to read). The quizzes every day are fairly difficult because they are one definition from anywhere in the chapter. Overall, I would say try to take an easier class if you are a non major science student because only one or two people end up making an A. I had the third highest grade in the class with a B+.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1302 - This class was a LOT easier last semester. I wouldn't say that he has gotten harder, just the material. 1301 was more of a review of high school chemistr, while 1302 was completely new to me. I had to devote much more time to this class than I originally anticipated. He is nice and grumpy... I know it doesn't really make sense. His office hours are wonderful. He is available from like 1 to 5 pm on TH or something. I would recommend him for CHE 1301 but not 1302. Take McGrath, I heard he was easier.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-05-14

Comments:1405 - I heard this class was going to be really easy but that isn't the case. There is a ton of reading and the tests are only 30 multiple questions and the questions randomly cover the chapters. The book report is easy but dumb. The essay is easy, just get started early. He is a really nice guy but the class is pointless.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302,1316 - Chemistry is A. Hassell... Really good teacher. His class is good - go to SI definitely. Also, his tests have like a maximum score of 114, so that is nice, but each question is about 7 points. He's a really nice guy. Make sure you go to class, and you have to read the book to do well. Go talk to him and meet him. Hassell is one of the best chem teachers. Chem 1316 lab in the summer with hassell is really tough, but he's a good lab instructor for the most part. He is really picky, though. He took off 5 points on one lab because there was a staple in the wrong place on the paper. Overall, though, good experience.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-05-12

Comments:Chem & Society - he is such a sweet old man! he made the material relatively interesting and prepared you for each test. only one paper to write.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2009-04-27

Comments:1405 - I like Hassel, he was a really nice guy. But I'd recommend not taking this if you just need some lab sciences, Mrs Humphrey the lab instructor makes her labs super easy, and boring, but her midterms and finals were absolutely insane, and although Hassels book report and research papers are both easy A's his tests are terrible, their open note but noone knows where he gets the ?'s from. If you need a lab science do not take this course, take Shakes and Quakes Astronomy or World Oceans, unless you took like AP Chem in HS.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-04-26

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is a very sweet old man. His lectures are boring, but he tells funny stories. You dont really learn anything in this class, but the tests are really easy because they are open note. And he is very helpful if you go and talk to him in his office or after class. You have 3 tests and a final, a book report,a lab grade, and a daily quiz grade. He drops your lowest grade, which helps significantly at the end. This is by far the easiest chem class offered at Baylor, so if you gotta take chem take Hassell!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-04-24

Comments:Chem1302 - I LOVED chemistry before this class...I was actually excited to take the chem class from the teacher who everyone seemed to like (?). But, I was quite disappointed...The tests are NOTHING to do with what you know. I went form getting a 93 to a 47 to an 87. Also,I love syllabuses and order and schedules, but his "syllabus" is a joke. It tells you nothing. Anyways, if you are taking him, make sure to understand mastering chem and look at his old tests online.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-04-22

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell was a one of a kind professor. although his lecture is boring it pays to write down the notes because his tests are open notes. he also says alot of 'aaahs'. i tallied how many 'aaahs' he said in a class time to keep things interesting. over the course of 28 class days he uttered 6242 "aaahs".   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-04-21

Comments:1405 - He is a really nice man that cares about his students. He is not the best teacher if you have not taken any kind of chemistry before, but most of your grade comes from the test, which is open note. The questions are slightly random, but they rarely come from his lectures. If you really take good notes in the book then you will do fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-01-30

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is great Christian guy, but he's a terrible teacher. All of his questions seem to be taken completely at random, so no matter how well you know the material, you only have a 30 question test... 30 questions which are almost never brought up in class. I turned out to get an A in the end, I have no idea how. It was a frustrating ride.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-01-19

Comments:CHE 1301 - I do not know why this guy's score is so low. He is GREAT. This class was easy. Each exam was 17 questions, but you only needed to answer 15 correct to get a 100. Although he can get a little angry every once in a while, he is really a nice christian man. I definitely recommend him.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-21

Comments:1301 - Dr. Hassell is awesome. Take notes as he writes on the elmo each day. One question quiz at the beginning of class each day as well which isn't extremely hard. 4 Tests which were all fairly easy so long as you do the online MasteringChemistry homework and pay attention in class (which can get extremely boring). Great teacher who cares about his students not just inside the classroom but outside. Wish I was still taking Chemistry classes so I could have him again. Take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-19

Comments:Chem 1301 - Dr Hassell is probably one of the sweetest men in the world. He cares for his students and tries to make sure that you know exactly what you need to for his tests and for his course. His lectures are really boring, but hey, its chemistry so what can you expect? His homework is online-mastering chemistry-and it is not hard, just really time consuming and tedious. His test are pretty easy and you can score up to 113% on each test, so basically each test has a 13 point curve which will help you out a lot. I suggest you take him if you want to do well in chemistry. He is a great professor!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-18

Comments:1301 - Hassell is a great professor. His lecture can be boring at times, but who could really make introductory chemistry all that entertaining? He spends class working through examples of almost everything that is on the tests. There is a daily quiz everyday over the chapter from that particular week so if you read you will get it right and it counts for a test grade in the end. Very approachable outside of class if you don't understand something.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-16

Comments:1301/1302 - Dr. Hassell is AMAZING! I had taken Chem 1 with a different professor and made a D. Then I retook it with Hassell and made a B. Big difference! He's really good at explaining things and he really tries hard to make class upbeat. He definitely does not speak in monotone which is always a big plus! Also, hes very nice and if you go see him during his office hours, he's even more helpful. He's really nice about it and he especially likes it when his students actually go and talk to him and ask him questions. Therefore, I definitely recommend you take Hassell for Chem 1 and 2!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2008-07-14

Comments:1301 - Hassell was awesome! He explained everything VERY in depth. He spent most of the class going through examples so by the time the test came around you knew exactly what was going to be on it. We had a quiz every day but it was always a bolded word or theme from the chapter we were on. Very easy. He also puts all his old tests on reserve so you can study off of those and have a good idea of what is on the test. He was great and I definitely suggest taking him!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-04-21

Comments:1405 - I hated the class, but it was totally because it was chemistry and had nothing to do with Hassell. All of the tests were open note, so they were super easy. I reccomend Hassell to any non-science major. He knows that not everyone at Baylor loves science...the class is really easy.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-05-23

Comments:1302 - chemistry is chemistry... but dr. hassell made it a little less painful - he writes out his notes on transparencies (no powerpoint!) & he puts all his old tests online (on bearcat) & that is really all you need to study for the tests... he reuses a lot of questions, so if you have practiced the old tests you should be ok - he grades really quickly and gives attendance quizzes daily that can really help your grade since they count as a test... and he occasionally talks to himself, calling himself 'alton' - overall, i would recommend him  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-05-09

Comments:1302 - EXCELLENT teacher. It is a very tough course, I'm not going to lie. BUT... if you go to class, take notes, review them, and study the old tests like crazy, you'll do fine. He is always available, his corny jokes are kinda funny...sometimes, and he actually tries to let you UNDERSTAND the material and not overload you. TAKE HIM!!!!!!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-05-07

Comments:1302 - Had to stop numerous times to ask what he had written in cuneiform. Test are pretty straight forward. Old Exams didn't do crap. SI was a joke. Read book and take good notes in class or you will fail. Daily quizzes saved me a passing grade, don't skip class.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2007-05-04

Comments:1302 - Hassell is the worst prof. I've ever had. His lectures are dull and monotone, his accent makes things impossible for me to understand, and he doesn't explain anything about the examples. Even the environment is terrible. I would never wish this course on my worst enemy. He comes off as a complete jerk and calls you out if you're late, leave early, or basically move at all while he's lecturing. It's really annoying and I DON'T reccommend him.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2007-01-25

Comments:1302 - Good professor. He posts his old exams online. He also offers additional help before each exam for students to ask questions on top of having a SI.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-01-04

Comments:chem 1301/2 - Dr. Hassell is a genius!! He's amazingly smart and great at teaching. I kicked ass in chemistry because of him! And his SI is the best out there! I'd take him just because of the SI.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-06-24

Comments:1405 - This is a very easy class as long as you do the work. When preparing for tests you should have all the vocab words (some of which are not in the glossery, copy all the important pics, and write down the italicized stuff (this is what really kills the grades). As long as you study for the lab tests, which can be harder than expected, you will do fine. There are daily quizzes for attedence purposes and plenty of movies. All in all, this class is perfect for non-majors because Hassel knows that non-majors probably have no use for science whatsoever.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2006-06-16

Comments:CHEM 1405 - Very nice and genial man. He cares a great deal about the students. The lectures are pretty boring though, but make sure you copy down b/c it will be on the test. There were some stupid aspects to the class: book report and research paper were just stupid. but the tests are all open note. My advice: copy your textbook into your notes! Also, the student study guide is quite helpful...its worth your $20! not too many people make A's: only 2 out of 50 in my section did!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2006-05-09

Comments:1302 - Dr. Hassell is a very good professor. He teaches well, but the material takes practice. Do the bookwork he assigns. I got cocky after the first test and didn't do the bookwork for the second one and got a bad grade. Also, practice the online old tests--they are the best way to study for the tests. The tests were hard but fair. He lets you drop one test and, when our whole class did poorly, he gave one make-up test. Hassell also gives daily quizzes, so don't miss class. Tim the SI guy is an even better teacher than Hassell. It is very helpful to go to SI. If you start off working hard, you can get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-05-09

Comments:Chem and Society - He has a terrible teaching style, the lectures are very boring and he speaks in a really monotone voice alot of the time. The tests are open notes but don't just count on using your notes you still have to take extensive notes on the chapter. Only five people in my class made an A.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2006-04-22

Comments:1301 - Very helpful and available, but disliked his teaching and lecture style. He always made the info more complicated than it really was.   - Grade In Class:DROP

Date: 2006-04-09

Comments:1405 - Not a hard class at all. The lab sucks. There's a paper and a book report to do, but I half-assed both of them and got A's. Take great notes, and make copies from the book because the tests are open note. He's a real nice guy. Great, easy class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2005-12-17

Comments:1405 - If you've taken any chemistry before, this course isn't hard. Take really thorough notes on the chapters, because the tests are open-note (multiple choice, 30 questions) and a lot of the questions are nit-picky and obscure. Also do the reading because there's a daily quiz of 1 question about it. It's not hard, though. Dr. Hassell tells a lot of semi-boring stories and it's sometimes hard to pay attention, but the material can be interesting sometimes. Just take notes for the test. There's also a book you have to read and do a "report" on, which is basically a bunch of questions and it's really easy. The term paper at the end of the semester is a joke. Also, if you make an A without the final, you can drop it. Take this class if you need it, Dr. Hassell's a pretty good teacher.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-12-16

Comments:1301 - If your not prepared to do the work, don't take chemistry. But if you are Dr. Hassel is a very nice professor. I should have had a A in the class if I started out as strong as I finished. His SI Tim is awsome and helps a lot. Take Hassel if your serious about taking Chemistry, but be prepared to work.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-15

Comments:1301 - I'm not a chem major nor did I look forward to taking the course when I came to Baylor. However Hassell is a challenging teacher that will teach you a lot. We went beyond what most of the other Chem 1301 classes covered. He is a good professor. His tests are all multiple choice. If you take him you may have to work your butt off but you will come out with a better understanding of Chemistry.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-14

Comments:1301 - Good guy, but lectures go way too fast, and cover way too much information. The tests are much simpler than the lectures would make them seem to be. Overall pretty good, but usually only has huge classes, so if you dont like that, stay away.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-10

Comments:1301 - he's a pretty good teacher as long as you can get past his monotone voice. otherwise he knows his stuff and you'll actually learn... his tests are easy and his quizzes are easy as well!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - This guy is such a great professor. Very professional (always wears a suit to class, except Chem Is A. Hassell test days). He gives pretty good lectures and tells you and shows you exactly what to know and how to solve a problem. He has a real high pitched nasal voice, and can be pretty goofy at times by telling his stories to relate to the chemistry topic. Hes very caring of his students too, and posts all of his old tests online from many years back (although they are not really the same, but good for practice). If you're deciding who to take for Chem 1, definitely take Hassell. He's the man!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-11-01

Comments:1302 - Dr. Hassell is such a sweet man! I breezed by in Chem I, but hey! Chem II is a different story! This class takes A LOT of time and effort!!! It helps to read the chapters ahead of time and work through the problems in the book AND his old tests. However, don't rely purely on his old tests. Make sure you read your notes and can do every problem that he worked in class without help and you will be fine. He's really available for your help!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-05-10

Comments:1301 - He posts his old tests on Bear Cat and they are nearly identical to the ones in his class. Pay attention in class and you will never need to open the book.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-01-14

Comments:1301 - I missed getting a B+ by 1 point so don't expect your grade bumped up, but nonetheless he is a good teacher. I have him again for chem. 2. He makes his old tests available online, USE THEM they are your best study guide and source for the material he is looking for. Very nice guy though, I liked him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - Dr. Hassell is such a sweet person, I had to leave early to get to Draper from his class and he had no problem with it. His lectures seem to drag on forever, sometimes I thought they'd never end. But if you do his old tests online and the problems in the back of the chapters you should get a good grade. Our SI instructor was terrible though. He is really very understanding, he knows that some of us haven't had chem in awhile so he's starts from the beginning, and he's got some of the corniest jokes. All in all, I enjoyed the class and I like that he's an analytical scientist, no random book questions on his test, it was all problems with multiple choice.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - I loved this class. Hassel knows this class if for non-majors and he makes it almost impossible to get a grade below a C (unless you fail the research paper). Tests are easy and open notebook. He sticks right on class schedule and the daily quizes were easy because they are basically for attendance taking reasons.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - I had not made in A in a science class for a long, long time until I took this class. Dr. Hassel is a good teacher, and since this is not a pre-med class he does not teach it like a pre-med class. In other words, he's not out to get you and he doesn't try to teach you everything that a pre-med student would have to learn.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-11-03

Comments:1405 - Hassel is a good teacher if you are prepared to study for the test. He makes his lectures interesting with his corny jokes, however even though his tests are open notes dont let yourself be fooled. Just make sure you take good notes and study your notes and you'll do fine. Take Hassell if you want an A, but just be ready to study every now and then for the tests. Hahah and there is some stupid book report but thats retarded... not worth fretting about..  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - Dr. Hassell is definately the man to take for Chem1 since it's just a basic class, but you may want to consider taking another prof. for ChemII. He kicks it up a notch for ChemII and even with daily reading I still had to work super hard in his class to get a okay grade. I definately know that NO ONE recommends taking him for Chem Analysis 1316 either.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - What can I say Dr. Alton Hassel is the man! First off, this man has a Double-Doctorate in Physics AND Chemistry and is a leading member in the American Chemist Society. This guy seriously knows what he's doing. Tests are fair if you've studied, class average on all tests is around a 70 with the mystery curve, and he has a review session before each exam. I'm coming to Summer Session II just to take him for Chem2. He is the reason i'm sticking to my minor in Chem. Don't Forget, "Chemistry is A.Hassel"!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - I loved Dr. Hassell! Not really sure how I got an A in the class b/c chem is hard if you ask me, but he's really good and his test are multiple choice. So even if youre lost you can still guess!! The only thing is...now I'm afraid I'm going to fail chem 2 since I can't take him...  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem - The class is real hard if you're not good at chem, but otherwise, you should do ok. I am retarded at Chem so I didnt do too hot. But lectures are boring, but make sure you stay awake and keep up with him, because it all piles up. Tests a little difficult but then again I am retarded. Hes a great teacher, and an even nicer man. TAKE HIM!  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:CHE1301 - Dr. Hassel is a pretty cool old guy. Class average on most tests is about a low C but if u study the lectures and do the practice tests, you'll be fine. I plan to take him for CHE1302; if ur a bio/chem major i recommend you do the same.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-01-15

Comments:CHE 1301 - He is a good teacher. I have a class of around 225 and I think that he handles the material very well. He may seem a little boring, but if you can make it through his class thats great. He gives daily quizzes, but they are just for taking attendence. You can take the quiz with an open book if you want. Also, his tests are pretty average. There are about 20 questions, but 2 of them are mystery bonus questions. So as long as you read the chapters and do some of the problems at the end of the chapter, and attend his review sessions...you are bound to do good in his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2003-12-01

Comments:1405 - Dr. Hassell is terrible! Chemistry for non-major was the hardest course I took here at Baylor. Hardly anyone made A's on the test, a few B's, mostly C's, D's, and lots of F's! And the worst of all, is that he put questions that he never covered in class and admitted to it! Chemistry is NOT a Hassle, Dr. Hassell is the hassle!   - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2003-11-11

Comments:1301 - Remember: "Chemistry is A. Hassell." I recommend him. His lectures are really boring, but the tests are so easy that it is worth it. His tests had about 15 questions, but he divided how many you got right by 2 less than the number of questions there were, so basically you could miss 2 and still get a 100. Plus, he keeps his old tests on file in the library, and his new tests are almost identical to his old tests.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2003-11-03

Comments:Dr. Hassell is great! He's such a nice guy and really wants his students to do well. He is always willing to help without making you feel stupid for asking dumb questions! Definitely recommend him!

Comments:Dr. Hassell is great. He teaches you interesting things that chemistry has to do with. I would take him again. If you take detailed notes of each chapter, you should do OK on the tests, although they are hard. You do have to do a research paper, but its easy and you get to do it on any topic you want, plus he grades those pretty easy. I never ever had to study for this class (except for making my notes to use on the test) and I made a B+.

Comments:Dr. Hassell is very nice, he likes to tell corny jokes, but every now and then they are funny. The "open book" tests are extremely hard and everyone fails but he lets you write papers at the end to bring all your test grades up to a C. Its an extremely boring class but he's nice and doesn't care if you do other homework in there as long as you don't talk or come in late and then he gets mad.

Comments:This is one of the most boring classes I have ever taken, probably because I hate Chemistry. He really tries hard, and he's a good guy, but he doesn't have much to work with. The class was ok overall, but Chemistry In Whispering Caves was the most awful book I have ever read in my entire life. Science Profs should NOT try to write novels!

Comments:I love Dr. Hassell! I had him for Chem 1, 2 and 1316. He's great and really helpful. He will work around issues in your personal life that might interfere with your ability to focus on academics. He is wonderful and if I could take him for every chemistry class, I would.

Comments:As an archaeology teacher he's terrible. Big suprise since he isn't an archaeologist, but that's Baylor for you. Watch out archaeology majors.

Comments:Great teacher. I don't understand why the class average on most tests is a 65%, but the class is not difficult.

Comments:I had him for chem last semester, great guy, great teacher. Hes kinda of awakard at times, but good guy. He gives great notes, and you should read your book will better help you understand whats going on if your not all that great in chem. He should assign hw to be turned in bec that will help alot of peoples grades.

Comments:Chemistry is so boring but he tries to make it interesting.

Comments:A great professor who cares for his students.

Comments:He is a very nice man, always willing to help you out. The only downside was that I found his class boring.

Comments:He is a great teacher. His classes are interesting and he gives you stretch breaks on long class days. He stays after class everyday so if you have questions you can ask. He is actually concerned for his students and the grade that they make.

Comments:He is a very pleasant man and very helpful also. He is patient when students have questions and always has real life examples and storys about chemistry! He doesn't assign homework to turn in, but he does recommend that you work the problems at the back of the chapter AND YOU SHOULD! Keep up with your reading because he checks attendace by giving 1-question daily quizzes on the reading assignment.
