Comments:1301 - I thought that his tests were very fair, but his teaching style was totally disengaging. He talked to us like we were children and his class seldom included student to professor interactions.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Speech - You have no class on Fridays which is really cool, but you make up for it with TA meetings that you have to go to and give speeches to. HE IS SO BORING. He is one of the most boring lecturers and really hard to follow. The tests are word for word and the speeches are super easy. Just a boring class  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - Boring class. Get a good TA at all costs. You will take between two and three exams. Do well on the first two so you don't have to take the third. *stomp foot* the third test is the only one you wont be able to find and study: don't take it. YOU DON'T HAVE CLASS ON FRIDAYS! but... you do meet with your speech group outside of class every other week (can't get out of it, sorry).  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - Dr. English is just outright bad at his job. He teaches communication and yet everyone struggles to keep their eyes open. He talks sooooooooo slowly. Like REALLY slowly. I mean if you go to the bathroom during class you might miss a sentence or two. All the tests are the EXACT same each year and they are all free response. Study them because depending on your TA they could be picky. But yeah, as long as you do that on your own for a bit, paying attention in class is a waste of time. Treat it like a study hall; his voice is honestly kinda blends into the background - my most productive hour of the day guaranteed :). TA's make or break your experience in this class. It's almost like Baylor roamed the streets of Waco picking up the homeless to take these TA positions; some of these guys are really unimpressive. My TA was awful - he had a terrible stutter, smelled really bad, and had a generally poor speaking presence. His grading wasn't great either. DON'T DO ANY POLITICAL SPEECHES IF YOU HAVE CERTAIN TAs! I tried this and my TA knocked me 25 points off of my average speech grade. I fought it for like a month and eventually they gave up and gave me an A. Get Savannah or Roman if you can.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-10-17

Comments:1302 - Dr. English could have not attended class one day of the semester and I would have learned the same amount, don't get me wrong it is an easy course and the TA's are all great but do not go into this class expecting to learn anything. Over the semester you give 6 speeches and can take 2 or 3 tests (depending on your grade) and that was all. There are lots of extra credit opportunities (attendance, evaluations, etc.) so this is an easy A course as long as you do your speeches. Another thing, most of the information you need for the fill in the blank tests are already on quizlet from previous students and the test hasn't changed a bit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - The class itself can be more doable if you get a good teaching assistant (TA- An upperclassman that teaches and grades your work). I had the easiest TA and this class was still pretty demanding. There's two portions of the class: the speeches (most of your grade) and the tests. One thing that made this class suck was that you have to meet outside of class time for an additional hour and a half every other week. This strained my schedule a bit. In return, class is always cancelled on Friday which made this a Monday-Wednesday class only. Dr. English was really difficult to listen to because of how boring most of the content was, but there's some valuable information that he presents and some of his stories are funny. I would not take him again, though. The speech part of the class depends on the TA. Easier TA's give higher grades and there's no way to know which one you're going to get. The class itself was pretty easy. No nightly homework and only two tests. Optional final. The tests were packed with information, mostly free response, and somewhat difficult. You can do poorly on the tests if your speech grades are high, though. An A is a 90 in this class. This class was sorta rough. Not hard to get an A in but very busy. You're not doomed if you get English, but it is very boring.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - He is so so so boring and the class sucks BUT if you get Roman as a TA you will be absolutely fine. Do your work and you get an A its that simple.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1301 - Dr. English is very unorganized and has an awful syllabus that is very unhelpful. I can't recall a single lecture I was able to stay awake for or not zone out in. He speaks very slowly and very choppily. His TAs should take over the class. They literally do everything in the class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2019-04-25

Comments:CSS 1301 - While the material is helpful in teaching you skills in presentation and speech preparation, it is terribly presented. Ironically, the professor lectures very slowly and dramatically. He pauses for several seconds every few words. Occasionally his TA will lecture and he speeds through the material efficiently. The tests are very hard and free response. Luckily if you do well enough on the first few, then you won't have to take the final. In place of friday classes, you meet with a small speaking group throughout the week to present a total of 7 speeches. The speeches are relatively easy, however public speaking is not the most fun. If you record yourself speaking and analyze it, you can earn extra credit. Make sure you hit all the requirements for speech preparations otherwise you will get points off. The class is relatively easy, but the professor makes no effort to make the material interesting. My biggest complaint would be his lectures. His intonation makes it hard to stay awake unfortunately. The tests come entirely from the lectures. You won't be able to see your grade until the end of the semester. There is no homework other than writing speeches.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - For a professor whose syllabus says, and I quote, "There are no excused absences for any reason...," including for “...illness, family business, etc.” I found it slightly ironic that Dr. English didn't show up to any of the second half (THE ENTIRE SECOND HALF) of the semester's lectures. However, for the time that he was there, Dr. English was a decent lecturer. He reminded me a little bit of Robert California from The Office with the perplexing way he captivated my attention. But he was boring, and wasn’t quirky like Mr. California. He spoke in a monotone voice for the entirety of every lecture, and you really had to put in some extra effort to stay awake. Despite CSS 1302 being a three hour class, you only meet Mondays and Wednesdays for 50 minutes each, as he cancels every Friday class. However, seven times through the semester you meet with your “speaking group” for 1.5 hours to give speeches in front of a group of around 10-12 people. Here’s a pro tip for you: Everything about speech grading is subjective (except for the speech outline, follow the rubric for the outline to a T, and you’ll get half the credit there.) Find out what your T/A is interested in. Look them up on social media, find out their political beliefs, etc. and cater your speeches towards that. It’s contrary to everything Dr. English lectures, but I was getting 70’s on all my speeches until I did this, and suddenly started getting upper 90’s once I started giving speeches that spoke to what my T/A wanted to hear. And by no means was my speaking ability getting better. That won’t happen in this class. Best of luck to you!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Not sure that Dr. English will be back after his health caused him to miss the second half of Fall 2018 but, if possible, AVOID Dr. English. Lectures are long and boring. He gives assigned seats and if you are like me with a last name at the end of the alphabet you will sit at the back and not be able to hear what he is saying which creates a problem since his tests are all free response questions verbatim to his lectures. He has been giving the same material for 20 years so if you miss something you can likely find it somewhere. Definitely not a test you can walk into assuming it will be common sense. He will go very specific on the things he choses to have you explain. The speeches are pretty easy but you have to meet outside of class to give them with our speaking group. The topics are very business focused, so be prepared if you are not a business major. Your speech grade is partly based on your speech outline. Ignore Dr. English's format and base your speeches only on the syllabus which your TA will give you. Your TA will grade all your assignments, if you have a laid back TA, you will be just fine. On the positive, the TAs are nice and all on the same page. No class on Fridays made this class more manageable. You can definitely do well in this class, just be ready to study and know everything word for word.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - I do not think he will come back after the Fall 2018 semester because of health issues, but if he does- proceed with caution. Lectures are the same that he gave from 20 years ago. Super monotone, dull, and not very loud, which is rough for the people in the back because of assigned seating. He really does nothing other than lecture- your TA will grade everything you do. Tests are short answer and word for word from the notes which honestly sucks. There's 6 speeches but lucky for us, the first four are easy and can be written the day before. The last two are slightly tougher, but still fairly simple to write out- for the love of God though, look at the speech rubrics on Canvas because the TAs will take off for just about anything. If you show up to every class you get ten extra points onto your final grade which is quite nice. I would suggest the class mainly because of the easy workload.. that's about it.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-11-28

Comments:1302 - English is super boring and really does not care about his students. Public speaking in general makes everyone super nervous but know that everybody is in the same boat. I found my speaking group to be really enjoyable and I really liked my TA. My TA just wanted us to get better at speaking and they are really helpful in helping out with speeches and giving you good feedback.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - "when my son turned 16 I took him to ben taub hospital to see wreck victims" "THERE HAS BEEN A RIOT IN WACO ... I'm only kidding" "Write a 5 page, double spaced, MLA format for extra credit. Just teasing. Don't." "1,2,3. 3 of you girls will get pregnant this year." "raise your hand if you're single" all of these are word for word quotes. please take another teacher if possible.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2018-05-06

Comments:1302 - This is the worst professor/teacher I've ever had. It's impossible to not sleep in his class. For how much he "knows" about communicating with people, he is a terrible communicator. I've had better conversations with my pet rock. I don't even own a pet rock. He makes no sense and literally chainsmokes before class. It's a requirement class but if there's any way to not take him, do it. I died twice a week because of this class. Good luck.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2018-04-22

Comments:1302 - The class is really easy. You get an extra 10 points on your grade if you don't miss a class. Also, there is no class on Friday. The speeches themselves take a lot of time to write and practice but its manageable. Every test and speech is graded by a TA so you better get a good one. Professor English is without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. I feel like he's gonna keel over every class. If you can ignore him then I'd recommend taking the class as the course itself is fairly easy.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-04-11

Comments:1302 - Dr. English's class is beyond boring, you just show up for the attendance. I lucked out with a good TA so the actual speeches weren't difficult. Basically if you can get up there and improvise on a topic for 5 minutes you'll do fine. The tests were purely memorization and not difficult if you study the review.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-17

Comments:1302 - Worst professor I've had at Baylor. I had a good TA and got A's on all the speeches and got the attendance extra credit but I still got a B in the class because I'm not good at memorization and got D's on all the tests. If you're good at memorizing definitions word for word (all the tests are short answer), then you'll be bored but you'll get an A. If not.... avoid at all costs. There are a couple pros though, he doesn't have class on friday's and the final is optional. Still, do not take him.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2017-12-14

Comments:1302 - This class is boring. No way to get around it. It basically comes down to which TA you get, because they are the ones who grade you tests and your speeches. So if you get a good one, you luck out. As for Dr. English, his lectures are very boring. He has been giving the same lectures word for word for 40 years! The tests are annoying because you have to know things word for word. However, if you take good notes, its not hard to do well.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-04

Comments:1301 - How to get an A: show up to class, don't take notes (bc all the questions on the review guide are on quizlet), sleep or do another class's work, sign the attendance policy (don't be lazy, it's an easy extra 10 points), get a good TA, send your speeches into your TA every week (automatic 100 on that segment), and practice your speeches!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-02

Comments:1302 - So you will have to take speech if you are pre-business anything. The key to this class is to get a good TA. I was lucky, and I did what I was supposed to, so I was fine. The tests are hard, not going to lie, and you must study. No homework, only 6 speeches to present. English I believe, thinks we are all dumb. He would purposefully lie to us about Waco riots (don't mess with people like that)... I almost left the lecture I was so angry. He lies to make points about communication, which makes sense to get a point across, but makes me lose respect and his credibility with me. He only lectures. Period. The TA's grade tests, speeches, and anything else. If you do not get a good TA, the class will be hard. You can get through this, even though this review of him is horrible, the TA is all your grade depends on. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-29

Comments:1301 - Honestly this class just depends on who your TA is....they are the ones who grade your tests and speeches. Dr. English just sits and gives a boring lecture....which is honestly not very helpful.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-29

Comments:CSS 1302 - Really not a great teacher. Contradicts himself by explaining good speaking practices while sitting behind a desk and utilizing none of them. All that really matters is who your TA is. Just hope for a good one.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - BORING! But I learned there are 143 tiles on the ceiling.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-11-23

Comments:1302 - Theory: Dr. English no longer gives lecture himself. Rather, he has created a robot that has the capacity to repeat the same lectures, word for word, for the past 20 years. Why do you think he never gets up from behind his desk? This man hasn't showed up to class in so long, you are always looking at an advanced robot. Think of the robo-Mr. Krabs from that one episode of sponge bob. That's it. That's your professor. Become a robot and you'll pass.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-20

Comments:CSS 1301 - Professor English is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does little to nothing in order to keep the audience engaged and speaks in a manner in which is almost cryptic. Whenever students ask questions or answer him he speaks very condescendingly towards them. His tests are very difficult as well. They are entirely fill in the blank and will not be counted correctly unless they are word for word what he had stated within his lecture. Speeches are easy depending on the TA that you have. Overall, I would not recommend him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-18

Comments:1302 - I mean you know, he's a guy, and he teaches, so theres that.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-16

Comments:1302 - This class is an easy A if you get the right TA for your speaking group. His lectures are hella boring. He does give you a study guide for the test and will answer questions about it on a review day in class. The study guide questions and answers are on quizlet. There are 6 speeches you have to give to a small group, which is just annoying more than anything. The class is an easy A if you do decent on the speeches and put forth the effort to study for the exams. He lets you choose between taking 2 or 3 tests, which means you don't have to take the final if you don't want to.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-15

Comments:1301 - You should definitely take this class just because it's easy and it's a requirement but be warned that Dr. English is super boring and is not a great teacher. When he talks all I can hear is Robert California from the Office. There is no homework but study for the test's because usually people will have them from the past years. He gives the same test every year. The speechs aren't very fun to prepare for but it all depends on the TA. If you can, really get to know them. The greatest thing about this class is that there is no class on Friday. I took this class at 9:05 so it was an easy way to start the day.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-14

Comments:1301 - Most boring class you will take but not very hard. Exams are tough but they're only 2/7 of your overall grade so if you do well on the speeches and don't completely fail the tests you'll do fine. Do all the extra credit and sign the attendance thing and it'll really help. You don't need to pay attention in class just study quizlets a few days before the test.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-12

Comments:1301 - First off, this will be the easiest class you will ever have at Baylor. But then it will also be the worst class at Baylor. There is no work to be prepped for class or no homework at the end (minus your speech with the TA). Dr. English's lectures date back to the 50's and have no structure to them whatsoever. For the entire semester you can summarize his entire lectures in probably two pages of notes (and that's stretching it). I regularly ignored him during lectures and played on my phone (I don't usually don't recommend this during class, but with English's it's hard not to). Sit in any of the rows except the first two. Whenever he called on anyone (which was rare) he always called from the first two rows. Depending on your TA, the speeches and preps for them aren't bad. I did mine all the night before, didn't put much work or thought into it, and got an A every time. My TA was very chill and helped us out a lot during the speeches. Oh, and always ask your TA questions about the class. If you ask English he will insult you in front of the entire class (he did it with me and everyone else that asked questions). He doesn't respond by email and his office hours are useless. DON'T SIGN THE ATTENDANCE FORM!! It seems awesome at first, but then you have to come to every single 8am and dealing with this class that early is not worth it. Don't even bother getting any of the workbooks or textbooks, you don't need them. Take them back to the bookstore immediately and get a refund. The tests were word-for-word verbatim and you need to memorize everything he said directly. You get to choose to take which two exams you wan to take (Exam 1 and Exam 2 or either one plus the final). I choose Exam 1 and the final. The final was 6 questions and super easy. This class sucked, but it was such an easy class. Take my advice and grab some earbuds, sit in the back and watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy or The Office instead. Or sleep in, that's always a great option too.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-10-18

Comments:1301 - Easily the worst teacher I've ever had. Do not be fooled. He seems like a sweet old man, but he will bore you to absolute death. I don't understand how anyone could be so self absorbed and narcissistic to think they could have an 8am requirement class, and not use any visuals, or any materials at all. He's a tenured professor who doesn't do any work, is boring as nobody I've ever met, and has absolutely no teaching qualities I have seen. The speeches aren't terrible if you have a good TA, which I did, but you will dread putting in the effort. Don't buy the book. Take the class somewhere else.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2017-10-18

Comments:1301 - Allow me to set the scene. You are wrongfully imprisoned. Every day a sneering guard comes by and turns the radio to the same annoying song. Everyday the song grows louder. Everyday, the song gets more annoying. That's it. That's this class. The workload is fairly easy, but the tests are graded word for word verbatim. Can you regurgitate everything Dr English has ever said in class in an hour? Then you'll pass. If not, sorry kid. Please, spare yourself the mental anguish and don't take the course. I have participated in competitive public speaking for years and I hated this class. Seriously, even if you love speech and debate, don't take him. He will give fake assignments and describe mythical creatures if he thinks you are not listening. Often, he teases the students who raise their hands and tells them they have the wrong answers (when they do not). The class is insufferable. Also, so far we have not used the book once, so save yourself the $$$.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-09-26

Comments:1302 - This class is an absolute drag, but definitely not hard. There is 6 speeches and 2 tests with an optional final. The speeches take a lot of prep and most of the TAs are arrogant. Fill out the sheets about your speeches for extra credit... these took my grade from a B+ to an A. SIGN THE ATTENDANCE POLICY easiest 10 points I have ever received. Dr. English is boring but he not too bad out of class during his office hours.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-27

Comments:CSS 1302 - The difficulty of this class is dependent on your TA. I was lucky to have a very chill TA who didn't give me anything under an 85 on my speeches. However, I've heard others have had crappy TAs so it'll be based on that for how much work you have to put in your speeches. The tests are somewhat difficult, but they're weighted as much as the speeches so doing well on the speeches can make up for the tests. Also, the lectures are extremely boring so I wouldn't sign the attendance policy (I did, and regretted it) unless you're willing to sit through them every day. Final is optional.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-10

Comments:1302 - This is the worst class at Baylor. While most of the school is full of great teaching and personable professors, this has neither. The lectures are outdated, irrelevant and pointless. The 2 hours of lecture each week are not practical at all and don't help you speak better. The tests are not a cakewalk though and you're going to have to memorize everything from Dr. English's lectures... word for word. While it is nice that there is no class Fridays, the speaking groups are a drag. The small group instructors are rude and always seem to be in a bad mood. They bark at students during class and rub off as extremely arrogant. They may be nice outside of class but they do not relate to students well. The speeches themselves are not that bad and are easy to score well on, but they require a lot of preparation. Don't take this section or this teacher. You might get a good grade but its honestly not worth it. You won't get anything out of the class and will find yourself dreading to go and do any work at all. Take someone else.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-04-24

Comments:1301 - While this is a very boring lecture class, he only holds class MW so you have Friday off. However, you do have to meet 6 times during the semester to give your speech in a small group (about 10 people). The TA grades your speeches so your grade really depends on which TA you get (you don't get to pick). There is an optional attendance policy you can sign for bonus points, but if you miss classes it will hurt your grade. As other reviews say, his tests are very hard and you have to memorize what he says verbatim. However, if you do bad on the tests you can make up for it with your speeches and bonus points. Also, the final is optional.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Introduction to Speech - (Read fully) Do not take Dr. English if you want an easy class. While there is no class on Friday, each class bores you to the point you consider dropping the class. The man has done the same lecture for over 20 years "what is a Com Com" or *rolls pant leg up* which has made him monotone and dry. I would highly advise you avoid taking this class if possible. If you instead choose to take this class allow me to lay it out for you. DO NOT SIGN THE ATTENDANCE POLICY. When you first see this it will appear that perfect attendance will boost your grade a whole letter. This is not what it seems. Dr. English uses a point system in which you can receive up to something like 800 Points. The 10 perfect attendance points are the equivalent of 10 bonus points on a speech and too many absences deducts. Save yourself from worry and don't sign the policy. You will thank me later when you get to sleep in and not have to endure one of the notoriously boring lectures. You will also notice if you look around the classroom most the class is asleep or on their phones. This is with just reason. In regards to tests. You have to take 2 tests THESE ARE WEIGHED THE SAME AS A SINGLE SPEECH. You have the option to take a third. These tests are free response and VERBATIM WHAT DR.ENGLISH SAID IN CLASS. I studied for 4 hours for the first test and received a 72. THE TEST GRADING IS RIDICULOUS. You will also be required to attend 4 Baylor sponsored public speeches and write about them. If you fail to do these it will result in the loss of a letter grade. Finally, you will have around 7 speeches. Since the classes are huge you will have a weekly mandatory meetings with a small group and TA to present your speech (other reason you have no friday class) these usually last an hour MINIMUM. My TA was great...but...I have heard horror stories about other TAs who take the whole speech grading process way too seriously and are commonly bias when grading your speech. In conclusion, don't take this class if you don't have to.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - BUSY BUSY BUSY. Yes, this is a busy work class. Lectures are awful, speeches are a waste of time (except for the experience, and if you ask a question in class, be prepared for the most god awful answer. Also, know that if you answer a question in class, you will get reamed a new one and embarrassed. He may be a great man out of class, and may be a great professor in a smaller sized class, but in lecture halls, this is bloody murder to all students with verbatim tests and unfair grading guides. IF you take this, suck it up, because everyone has to. Most of the other speech classes are full. IF you do take this, be optimistic and study. The only great thing about this class is that we do not have class Friday (because of individual speaking groups once a week, depending on the week), so you get to sleep in if you have a morning class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Avoid this class and the professor like the freaking plague! Seriously do NOT take this class. Honestly, I'm a senior and this is the worst class i've ever taken at Baylor. It's seriously terrible. Please save yourself the time and headache and take another class. He teaches terribly! He's incredibly boring and you have to listen to his terrible stories in order to get the few bits and pieces of information for the test. oh and the test! Absolutely terrible!!! You have to have the right answer verbatim! You cannot try to paraphrase at all or you will get the ENTIRE question wrong even if you have basically the same answer. The TAs are terrible and grade just as hard. Seriously do NOT take this class! I really wish I would have looked at reviews before I took this class because honestly it was the worst experience of my life. I'm so glad it's over and I can only hope to help students avoid this class like I should have.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - For as much hate as he gets, Dr. English isn't THAT bad. Not good, but not the worst. His lectures are extremely boring generally but he does have some funny/quirky moments. Hope that you get a good speaking group TA. If you do, you'll do fine in the class. If not, drop it. Thankfully I was already an experienced speaker before the class because the lectures do not teach you how to speak at all, and every TA I talked to said that was their complaint too. Each speech is worth as much as a test, so take 'em seriously. I got 70s on both tests but my attendance bonus, best of the best bonus, and 95 average on the speeches got me an A by a fraction of a percent. TL;DR: If you have to take this class, don't let the bevy of terrible reviews scare you because the TA you get matters much more, and if you get a good one and are a good speaker, you'll do fine. If you don't need this class or aren't a good public speaker, stay away as you will do poorly.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This is the worse class I have taken at Baylor. You don't learn a single thing about speech. He sits up there and talks about nothing for an hour. Everyone in the class is asleep or on their phones. He makes his tests way harder than they need to be. They're all free response no multiple choice over useless information that he forces you to memorize that you will never need to know again, or is anyway helpful to improving your speeches. Do not take him unless you want the worse hour of your life every Monday and Wednesday!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Personally, I liked Dr. English. I think people hate on him more than he deserves. He’s an adorable man and has a super outdated sense of humor. He’s probably been giving the same lectures every day for over 20 years. The class doesn’t change and I actually learned a lot. Since each class has over 80 people in it, you get assigned to an outside of class speaking group of around 10ish people. Of course, since I have such great luck, I ended up with the “bad” TA who actually gets super into the speech grading process. Although I had to put a lot more effort into my speeches than my friends with different TA’s, I know that I am a better speaker because of this class. You give 6 speeches that are all 5-7 minutes long (seems daunting at first, but by your last speech, you’re completely used to it). I actually enjoyed our speaking group because we got to know each other pretty well (you'll be spending a lot of time together) and it made the speeches a lot less intimidating. Cater your speeches toward your TA and don't bother Dr. English with your emails. All he does is lecture during class. The TA's do everything else. Also, THE PEOPLE SAYING THE TESTS ARE HARD ARE JUST LAZY!!!! English gives you a test review of around 18 questions and pulls 7 or so of those questions for the actual test (word for word the same). Yes, filling out the review takes a lot of time and studying is annoying, but as long as you pay at least some attention during class to write down the important stuff you’ll be fine. The class period before the test he has a review day where you can ask him anything. When it asks for a definition, it must be word for word what English said, but it really isn’t as hard as it sounds. I studied for the first test for about 3 hours the day before and got a 95. It’s not hard, just know the review. There are no surprises. We never have class Fridays and you only have to take 2 of the 3 tests (2 are during class, 3rd is the final). So if you take the 2 inclass tests, you don’t have to take the final and you are done with the class by Thanksgiving break (I don’t know how this translates in the spring semester). Tons of opportunity for extra credit (if you show up for every class you get 10 points added to your final grade) You will get an A in this class as long as you put in effort and aren’t horrified of giving speeches.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Take this class with a friend so that outside of class you can do impressions of English and laugh your butt off. His lectures are possibly the funniest and worst thing I have ever seen. When you're in class you can just look around and see the entire class either asleep or on their phone. The TA's are absolutely classic though. Small groups are where the class actually helps and where you actually do something. English has just been at Baylor for 150 years and they can't get rid of him. Overall if you're looking for a good laugh take this class but if not then avoid it. In conclusion "People who do debate are usually queers." -Prof. English  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Boring lecturer but very possible to get an A in the class. Exams are short answer and you must know everything to get full credit but study a lot and you'll get a good grade. 6 speeches throughout the semester that are do able. Would recommend taking him if you're willing to do the work.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - Okay, this class is not as bad as most people make it out to be. Do not let them scare you. This class is fairly easy. As long as you pay attention in English's lectures and take good notes, you should not have a problem. His lectures are fairly boring, yes, but they are not horrible. He repeats the important things that you should write down, which is helpful. The first test is pretty easy, the second one is not as easy; however, still not awful if you study. He always gives a study guide for the test, which is an accurate representation of the test. They're are plenty of Quizlets to study with as well. For speeches, as long as you follow the rubrics, you will be fine I promise. I did all of my speeches the night before and got As on all of them except for one (and I am not that great at public speaking). Talk to your speech instructors/TAs. They are there to help you and most do not grade too hard. Also, the perk to this class is if you take it MWF, he never has class on Fridays except for the last one, which was wonderful. My only complaint about this class, besides for being boring, is that English smokes before almost every class and I sat near the front, so I could smell it throughout class, which was annoying. However, this class is a requirement for business majors, so just tough it out and put some work into it, and you should get an A no problem.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Dr. English is by far the worst professor at Baylor. For one, his lectures teach nothing about how to become a better public speaker. He only teaches what he wants you to know on the tests whether it's wrong or not. The tests are horrific if you are bad at memorizing things verbatim because even if you perfectly explain the concept that he taught, you will be counted wrong if you don't use the words he said in lecture which change every other day. There are 3 tests including the final but you can skip the final and try the two test option. This and the fact that he doesn't have any class on friday. There are 6 speeches but there are only 5 that are graded and each is 1/7 of the grade so that helps pick up your grade from the tests. My TA told me that there are a ton of people who will make 6s on their tests and ace the speeches and end with a B. So, hope for any TA except Hank DeHay because the rest are super chill in how they grade speeches. Pretty much do something without stuttering and have it long enough for the time limit and you have an A. In a nutshell, if you can, avoid this man like the plague because he is the biggest waste of money at Baylor. :)  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301/1302 - If you have the option to take anyone other than Dr. English I would highly recommend it. He has two or three tests (final is optional if you are satisfied with your grade) and five speeches. If you have a nice TA usually you can get Bs or As on your speeches no problem. The tests however, are completely free answer of broad questions and the answers are usually definitions I'm pretty sure he made up. It is possible to do well on them, but if you're like me and can't learn stuff that doesn't have a textbook or google to fact check, then this isn't a class for you. For a communications prof he sucks at speaking. He is either too loud or too quiet and walks around the room and picks out random people to answer his BS questions to prove some weird point. No textbook is required, don't buy it, you never use it. Overall, I hate this class and would not recommend it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CSS 1301 - I feel stupid writing this since the other reviews have pretty much covered it by now...this is a class in which you will learn nothing. Seriously, it is offensive that Baylor would hustle for even more money by making us waste our time with this class. English sucks at teaching and is a dickhead too, so count him out for helping you at all. The speeches aren't that hard, most people did theirs the day before and got A's or high B's. I know it sucks but I recommend signing the attendance initiative, sucking it up, and going to every class. If you don't miss a single one (like not one) you'll get 10 bonus points on your final grade.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - I really love this class. It's an 8am course, but it was incredibly interesting. I appreciated that he knew what he was talking about, and that if you asked him for a definition, his answer would be the same today as it would be in two weeks. His exams are really difficult, but if you prepare and do well on the speeches your grade won't be hurt too badly by this. Overall, I spent a ton of time doing work to study for the exams and to prepare for my speeches, but I found the lectures engaging and the course very educational.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CCS - CLASS SUCKS. It's at 8AM and no other time or professor provided. His lectures are so routine (he's been doing them for over 20 years). Boring. Class is composed of a midterm and a final (Both which are extremely difficult)...Averages are normally in the 60s....But that's just a little part of the grade...the speeches are the majority of the grade and normally get a high B or A on those.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - heres the bad news: you have to get the tests word for word. Like it's not multiple choice, you have to write what he says from lectures verbatim. He talks so slow and its agonizing BUT here is the good news! He cancels every Friday class (he did this for me and I know he's done it for other classes), the speeches are graded pretty easy because they're graded by TAs and you get the choice to sign an attendance contract where basically if you miss 4 classes or less, he'll add on extra points to your grade at the end of the semester. If you think you'll miss more than 4 classes, just don't sign it and nothing will happen to your grade. My grade went from an 85 to a 95 because of this. It's easy points as long as you show up. Also he gives extra credit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This class is pretty easy. The only work is preparing for your speeches (there are 6). Even though this class was easy and just busy work, I dreaded lectures. William is so egocentric and full of it. He literally thinks he's qualified to talk on any topic and acts like a total a**. He's very insensitive to everyone else's opinions and is quite rude. And I think he definitely crossed the line when with certain students in lecture. He'll pick on you and harass you in front of the class. Just the sound of his voice drives me nuts. Again, really easy class if you're willing to do the busy work and take good notes, but this guy is so annoying... and again, a total a**.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Well! this was by far one of the best classes, I've had at Baylor! tbh it all depends on your TA, If you have a cool TA then you're covered.. 700 points if you're going to exempt the final and both the midterm and final are 100 points each. so 5 speeches! get high grades on them, do the extra credit.. I promise you'll be finee!!! and last advice! for exams go on quizlet and see if you find flashcards that you think are verbatim.. that's what I did, cause I slept half the time.! Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - This is a course in which I learned nothing. The speeches were somewhat helpful, but absolutely no guidance on how to be better at public speaking was given. Instead, we are assigned to listen to Dr. English talk in powerpoint format (speech class eh?) and write down every word he says, so we can spit it back out on the exams. Memorizing words is not what makes you good at public speaking. Anyways, there are 2 memorization exams, and 5 speeches each worth 1/7th of your grade. Your TA will grade you on each speech, so have a lazy one, you're in luck. Have a difficult one, you'll likely get a C. Not as bad a class as people make it out to be, or as I just made it seem, but the course curriculum definitely needs fixing.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - His lectures are by far the most annoying things you'll ever have to sit through. There is an extra credit opportunity though to get about an extra 1.5 points on your average if you have perfect attendance, if you generally skip classes occasionally do NOT sign up for it because you will want to skip. If you go to all your classes usually then do it. I had no problem sitting through this class because I was making an A up until the 2nd exam. The class average was a 36, yes a 36. Out of 100. Dr. English refused to curve it causing many people to lose their A, one of them being me and the two people sitting beside me. I can't say "don't take him" since you basically have to for business, just giving you a fair warning on what to expect from him. But the TA's are pretty cool and lenient on grading so don't worry about the speeches if you aren't the best talker.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - This is a class almost everyone has to take. His tests are word for word what he says in class and are very similar to the reviews. I wrote down word for word what he said in class and got a 100 on both the written tests. The speech groups are blah. It all depends on who your TA is and if he likes you for your grades. Overall though his class is so simple.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - You have to take him, so sorry to burst your bubble but he kinda sucks. However, all of the tests are online so that's a plus. Also, you don't have to listen to one word he says, or take any notes because he doesn't matter. It all depends on who your TA is. Just sit back, and relax in this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Dr. English lectures Monday and Wednesday, giving students Fridays off. However, you meet with a speaking group of about 12 students every other week for about an hour. His lectures are very detailed, so be sure to write down word for word what he says because you need to know it for the tests. There wasn't daily homework, but speeches were assigned about every other week. The tests were really difficult, and mostly short answer. It didn't matter how well you understood the material, but just if you can regurgitate it. Your grade depends a lot on your speaking group instructor because some are easier graders than others. He offers a lot of extra credit- an attendance policy (if you don't miss a class, he adds 10 points to your final grade), self- reviews of your speeches, and a few others throughout the semester. Overall this class was not too exciting, just something you have to grin and bear. Having this class as an 8 am was hard because I found it difficult to pay attention sometimes. I never used the workbook he assigned as a textbook required.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1301 - Final Grade consisted of 5 speeches, 2 unit tests, and an optional final. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO MEMORIZE WHAT HE SAYS WORD-FOR-WORD IN ORDER TO GET CREDIT ON HIS TESTS! The majority of his tests are free response. He gives you a study guide for each test which makes it easier. I suggest typing notes during class and making sure that you type exactly what he says especially for definitions. Luckily, the majority of your grade (the speeches) are done in small groups of 8-12 students once every two weeks. Your speech grades are dependent on how good your TA (Individual Instructor). I had Kayde Givens, and she was the nicest TA ever - super understanding and really sweet. Class does not meet on Fridays, but Speaking Groups are once a week, every other week, at a time that you chose at the beginning of the course.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-12-08

Comments:1302 - All Dr. English does is give the lecture and approve the test that the individual speaking group instructors create AND grade. The instructors are super harsh and meticulous graders and basically expect your answers on the test to be identical to what Dr. English says in class. The tests are all short answer, with the exception of a few T/F questions, and even if you answer the question you'll end up getting points off because it wasn't exactly what they had on their answer key. I personally had a really nice speaking group instructor, but I felt that the grades she gave me on my speeches did not reflect the time and effort I put into them. This class basically REALLY sucks, but honestly no speech class is very fun....The upside is that there is no class on Fridays even though it's a MWF class because of the individual speaking group of 10 ppl we meet with on a separate day.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CSS 1302 - I'm a senior and I have never had a more rude and disrespectful teacher during my entire time at Baylor, I was appalled at how he treated students. Even worse he was extremely spiteful towards international studies that needed the extra help.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1301 - This class is honestly not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You never have homework, other than preparing your speeches, which there are only six of, and most people do the night before and still do well on. The lowest grade I ever got on a speech was a 92. Yes, the tests are completely open ended, so take good notes, but he gives you a review AND dedicates the whole day of class before each test to answering people's questions, so there is no excuse not to have what you need for the test, all you have to do is study. There are also only 2 tests (or three if you need it) so it really is not that bad. You have to go to 3 public speeches throughout the course of the semester but that is also very easy and he provides and informs you about lots of opportunities to do so. Also he cancels class on Friday and provides a lot of extra credit opportunities. For a lecture hall class covering a rather dry subject, he does his best to engage you which is nice. No, this class is not a blow off, but if you are willing to put in a little bit of work it is an easy A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Speech - Dr. English is definitely solid, but he's not going to blow your mind. I don't know why so many people don't like him, or what they think should happen in a lecture. He is dedicated to what he does, knows the material, and tries to be engaging. He gives a good amount of extra credit, so you can make up your grade if you get behind or don't put in enough effort early.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CSS 1302 - NO CLASS ON FRIDAY! Dr. English never had class on Friday but we had to sign up for a speaking group at a different time but there was a lot of options to meet any schedule. All speeches are given in those small groups. The grades on the speeches vary according to which TA you get. I personally got all A's on my speeches even though I thought they were pretty bad! I heard some stories about the other TA's being harder graders... The test are all fill in the blank and short answer so know your stuff! He gives a study guide which has what you need to know. His class was a little dry and will call you out if you are sleeping (I took it at 8 am). He gives extra credit for perfect attendance if you sign up for it at the beginning of the semester which really helped my final grade.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - His class is awful. It is miserable to sit there the whole time as he rambles about nothing. His tests are ridiculous and depending on who you get as your speech TA, your grade on speeches will vary. You have to take the class so might as well get it over with but study a lot and know literally every word from his lectures for the tests. Good luck.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - English himself is a lecturer. And thats it. Every class will be sitting there taking notes about the topic of the day. However there are 3 good things. 1. There is never class on Friday. 2. If you get a good TA, your grade will be great. 3. If you go to every class, you can get like 15 points added onto your grade at the end of the semester. The speeches themselves are really easy, and you just need to know everything he puts on the study guide to ace the tests. Just study strictly what you took notes on because there is no book. If you get good grades on the first 2, you don't have to take the final. Otherwise, the classes' difficulty is overrated.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - If you follow the guidelines for the speechs it's really easy to get an A even if you do it the night before however the tests are ridiculous and he is so boring and always off topic. He makes 50 minutes seem like 3 hours but he did tell us that we didn't have to come to our 8 am on Friday so it ended up being a MW class instead of a MWF. I learned a lot, but the class was insanely boring and he was semi-aggravating.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - This class is all about memorization and observation. Like everyone has said, the tests are way harder than you anticipate. He makes it seem like everything is common sense when really you just need to memorize everything word for word or else he will trip you up with wording or you will fail entire pages of questions where you are to supply essay-length answers. Make sure your TA likes you and you seem confident and your speeches will be fine! Just show up to class and do the extra credit and you can make an A. He, however, is incredibly boring. The amount of information he tells you could really be consolidated into 20 minutes, but he'll keep you every second of the class time because he likes to talk. He means well, but this class can be pretty dull.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - His tests are impossible, know that to begin with. Aside from that, the speeches are extremely easy, and if you do well you can get 10 points extra credit every speech. He allows you to have the option to only take 2 of the 3 tests, making it so you don't need to take the final, but he is a very boring teacher. Comments:1302 - Get a good TA and you'll be alright, but theres almost no way to know who you'll get. The tests are ruthless. The tests are anal about you writing word for word what he says in class. But he rambles so much. I literally skipped a day and the next class time he was right where my notes left off. He cancels all Friday classes so thats a nice bonus. He does reuse test questions and sometimes the TAs who grade leave notes with what it should be so if you can get it from someone before its helpful with knowing which specific way to word it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Steven Murray was my TA and he is ruthless. He literally grades your speeches on how he's currently feeling that day. If you don't get a good TA then you're out of luck for the speeches. They aren't too hard, and I wrote mine the night before every time. I had a great TA, so mine weren't graded too harshly. You need to pay attention in class, because his tests are WORD FOR WORD WHAT HE SAYS. Seriously, they are no joke. Find a friend that took him the semester before and study from their tests. Borrow peoples notes. Paying attention in class probably wont help much. Just take good notes. Use your speeches to pad your grade. I made low Cs on both exams (as did a majority of the class) but the 5 speeches helped me a ton. He has an attendance policy, think about it before you sign it. Comments:1301 - This is the WORST class I have taken at Baylor. English's lectures are just ramblings that are difficult to follow - he includes tons of added and useless information. The few times I spoke to him outside of class he was condescending and treated me like a 5 year old. The class was made even worse because of my TA, Lauren. Unless you are one of her "favorites" she will grade your speeches incredibly tough and count off points for random, vague, and pointless things. She rarely replies to emails and made the class so much worse than it needed to be. My other problem with the class is that your grade is 100% subjective because the tests are free response and the speech grades are based on your TAs mood. If you get stuck in this class, do the extra credit because that will help your grade. Take this class at a community college over the summer or something, don't suffer through it at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:A

The tests are hard as shit because it\\\'s all memorization of his long and complicated definitions of pointless concepts. Luckily the TAs don\\\'t take anything nearly as seriously as him so the speeches are graded really easy. Comments:Intro Speech - This class just sucks. If you have to take it, you have to take it. I was a senior taking this class, and it was painful to sit in assigned seats in a 150+ lecture hall. Prof tells boring stories, and while he's a good speaker, he sucks at teaching. No book. everything is notes. I didn't take notes once and managed a C (easily with absolutely horrific grades on the tests) in the class because speeches are worth the same as tests, and there are 5 speeches but 2 tests. The tests are ridiculous for an intro class. it's all memorization of a random list of things. no multiple choice, all open ended. an utter waste of time for me the student and the poor TA graders. Comments:CSS 1301 - I really enjoyed Dr. English's class. His lectures are a little ridiculous in that he can talk for the entire 50 minutes and I may only have about 6 lines of tangible notes to take away, but I found him to be very entertaining. He's really passionate about teaching, and I admired that about him. His personality is akin to that of a cartoon character, which for me made it very easy to pay attention, even in an 8 am lecture. It's a fairly easy class with next to no work involved. There are 2-3 exams (two exams plus the final. If you take the first two and are happy with your grades, you don't have to take the final exam!), and 6 speeches (only the last 5 are graded). The only thing Dr. English is in charge of is creating the exams. The TAs literally do everything else. They grade all the speeches and the exams. If you get a good TA, you're pretty much set up for success for this class. I had Brianna, the head TA, and she was AWESOME. I got an A on all my speeches except one, and that speech was my fault because I didn't have enough sources or else I would've made an A. I made average grades on the tests (an 85 and a 74), but because of the extra credit Dr. English gives, I was able to still make an A! Theoretically, if you were able to obtain all the extra credit he offered, you could get up to 70 points of extra credit! I only received 20 points of extra credit, and I only needed 12 of that 20 to make my A. Not a hard class at all. I did all my speeches the night before, and studied the review for about 5-6 hours the night before the exam and came out okay. I wouldn't say this is a blowoff class necessarily, but if you need a class that can get you a good grade with a manageable workload, take this class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - Dr. English's class is probably one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. His teaching is ineffective. He gives information and follows it with a 20 minute long story. The tests are hard. He requires you to remember the terms' definitions and concepts VERBATIM. I got an A because my TA, Lauren, was great! She was very helpful and graded speeches very generously. She understands public speaking isn't most peoples' strength. Unfortunately, you can't choose your TA, but if you could, Lauren is the best! The attendance policy is useful and ultimately helped me get an 'A' in the class. English offers a lot of extra credit, and I definitely recommend taking advantage of that considering how hard the tests are.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - This is the most asinine class I have taken in my class. And I've taken community college classes. SAVE YOURSELF, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Seriously, it's so stupid. He is the most boring professor, full of himself, is super condescending to students, and makes this class way too hard. The tests are ridiculous and you really have to memorize every little thing he says in class. Don't sign the attendance policy, I did and I never wanted to skip a class so much. I took this class as a fine art credit and it was the worst mistake of my life.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - This class was the worst class I've ever taken at Baylor. The speeches are the most work, but if you get a good TA you should be able to get A's with a little effort...I wrote all of mine the night before and the lowest I ever got was a 93. The tests are COMPLETELY open ended questions, based only on what he says verbally in lecture so bring a laptop to class and type up every word he says, verbatim, or you will lose tons of points on the tests. An incredibly boring guy to listen to, full of himself, thinks he is God's gift to the public speaking world but really is a terrible public speaker. Spends entire classes giving useless examples, and the actual material he covers could be done in 5 minutes. No Friday classes. DON'T SIGN THE ATTENDANCE INITIATIVE you will never want to go to class!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This class was awful. Dr. English had the most annoying voice I've ever had to listen to. This class makes me start my Monday and Wednesday in a bad mood every week. The only good thing about this class is that he cancels all Friday classes on the very first day. The tests are completely fill in the blank, but you have to put down the definietions and all the answers word for word what Dr. English says in class or the TAs will take off points. There are no outside reading materials so you can't miss class. Your grade in the course is dependent on your individual speaking instructor, which is assigned to you. Some are better than others. The first week of class he gives you the option to sign up for an attendance policy that gives you extra credit for not missing but will take away points if you skip. I personally signed up for and don't regret it, but a lot of people do. There are three exams, but you only HAVE to take two of them. The final covers material from the previous two exams. The speeches you give in small groups make up the majority of your grade in the course. I hated this class and am so glad to be done with it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - You will go to the lecture twice a week and the speech groups every other week. You will have to write 6 speeches and perform them in front of your group of around 10 people. The speeches are pretty easy I got an A on every single one and I did them all the night before and morning of. The lecture part sucks and you'll want to skip all the time so DONT SIGN THE ATTENDANCE INITIATIVE POLICY!!!! the extra credit isn't worth not being able to skip. Just bring your lap top and entertain yourself with pinterest. Hopefully you get a speech TA that grades speeches easily like I did. I had Marie-Claire.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - where to begin...Dr. English is easily the worst professor I've had at Baylor and I have seen a lot of different teachers at Baylor. He wastes your time every class with pointless stories and then expects you to write down exactly what he says for the test. When I say exactly I mean word for word and he changes his definition of something every time he says it. Dr. English is a terrible, unengaging excuse for a professor. Come on Baylor you should have at least two or three professors for a class that most majors require. I'm just disappointed my major required me to take this time waster. But hey I'm done so who cares! I just feel bad for all of those suckers who have to sit through 50 minutes of gibberish and absolute foolishness at 8 in the morning. My advice is to take the first two tests something which I neglected to do because I thought I could take the final and pass. Be careful because he will screw you over. oh yeah and have fun in college :)  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1302 - This class was by far the most boring class i have ever taken here at baylor. His teaching style is that of someone from the 1890's. His lectures are, in my opinion, boring and worthless. One thing I hated about this class was the fact that the T.A.'s make the decisions for your grades. In my instance, she wouldn't give me an A, but gave my friend an A. They do not keep their word and are hypocritical. This class is a required course for B.B.A.'s, so you have no choice but to take it, but it is awful. good luck with it!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - This man puts me right to sleep. I never pay attention, I just know he goes off topic and spends 15 min trying to show a small example of something. This class actually requires a good amount of work which it should not. The Class is composed of tests option which you could choose to take 2 or 3 which I say take the first 2 tests and 5 speeches. The speeches were not too bad if you had a good TA. I had Bowman and I made all A's in my speeches except one. But the speeches take a while to prepare finding legit sources and buncha other crap. However the tests are pretty rough. He gives us a review and all the stuff on the review will be on it but you have to memorize everything WORD FOR WORD to get a good amount of points on each question. The test were just impossible stupid and required a lot of studying. A cool part about this class is that you only meet MW and I'd suggest you sign the attendance policy bc the extra credit helps a lot. I'd suggest taking this class only if your willing to pay attention to this boring old man or if you get the old tests and notes from other students. Not as bad as you think but still awful class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - This man is the worst teacher I've ever seen. The speeches are really easy to get A's on, but the tests are impossible; you literally have to know everything word for word like he says it (which is all useless bull answers) or you will do awful. He can't even speak well, and the test grading is ridiculous; this class should seriously be looked at by Baylor faculty. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THE ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE. Comments:1302 - This man will absolutely put you to sleep. TAKE THE FIRST TWO TESTS AND DO NOT ACCEPT THE ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE. Comments:1301 - Dr. English's lectures literally can put you to sleep. Ironically, I feel like he is a not a good public speaker - he goes on ALOT of tangents about random stories, or he'll take 20 mintues to talk about an example trying to prove a point that really doesn't need to be proven because everyone already knows its true anyway. I have never had to work so hard to stay awake and alert, especially since it was an 8am class for me. There is no book and no powerpoint, so you have to pay very close attention to everything he says, and you basically need to write down everything he says, because there is alot of vocab with long, confusing definitions that you will need to be able to recall word for word on the test. Tests are all short answer, and you have to get the answer pretty much word for word. Your answers have to have specific words or phrases in them to be counted correct, so you need to know exact definitions and understand everything. HOWEVER, the speeches are what make up most of your grade, and those are graded by TAs, which seemed to make it much easier. You do have to spend time in the library, but my TA graded based more on the quality of your outline if you werent a confident speaker, so that helped alot. I got an A in the class, and Dr. English actually offered alot of extra credit, so in the end it worked out well.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - WORST TEACHER I’VE EVER HAD!! Take speech in community college instead! He is the worst public speaker ever which is weird considering this class is called speech his voice is obnoxious and he is really sexist which is annoying. There are NO PowerPoint’s and NO book so you have to listen to his unbearable voice and at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning, it’s almost IMPOSSIBLE! But if for some reason this guy STILL won’t retire and you absolutely HAVE to take him…then here are some tips: Your grade is all about the TA that you get, I got the hardest one which sucked…he was from the north and didn’t even know what pigskin was so ask around and try to get an easy one. The speeches and the tests BOTH suck that’s why I got my first B ever in here even though I’m a junior, it ruined my 4.0 lameee! Basically the speeches are like writing a huge research paper every other week, super time consuming! You’ll be in the library a lot. The tests are all short answer and they’re completely subjective so you can do well and still make a C….I hated this class with a burning passion and I am a communication specialist major so that’s really saying something!   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - Not sure why he is rated so low, aside from being boring. This is an easy A if you pay attention and take notes. There are 5 speeches which count as test grades and are pretty easy (depending on your TA)and the test are just memorization, so if you just take good notes, memorize the study guide, and spend an hour at the most on the speeches theres no reason you shouldnt get an A  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1301 - The class was fine, the the speeches end up taking up most of your time. You don't have to go to class on friday because you go to a speech lab at another time that works best for you! Some people do the speech outline in 30 minutes, i took 3-5 hours to do mine because I wanted a great grade in the class. However, there is not a powerpoint during the lectures (which sounds like a stupid complaint) so good luck following along, you won't be able to do so, trust me! He says the strangest things and it is so hard to follow what he is saying! Drink some coffee before this 8am class and get ready to focus! Also, don't sign up for the attendance reward, it won't be worth it. Also, follow his lectures EXACTLY, that is the only help you get on the test, so don't miss a single word. Comments:1301 - 1301- This class was the most bothersome of all the classes I had, only because of the structure and the professor. The course itself would be very easy if it wasn't so time consuming. Dr. English talks and talks, and people literally fall asleep, I have no clue why he is a speech teacher. The class also requires to meet once every other week outside of class to give a recorded speech, about 5 graded. The TAs for the most part grade fairly easy, so this will boost your grade because they are essentially test grades. The tests themselves are ridiculous, the lecture material is so vague, disorganized and boring that it makes it hard to get a good grade on them without extreme focus. The test requires you to account word for word definitions or examples and has a few true-false. This class is easy, but the test and the dullness of the lecturer makes it challenging.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1301 - He tries to teach a class that is speech, where you kinda have to teach yourself it. Which the speeches are alright, but then he gives you tests on the stuff he talks about in class that are tough and the things on the test aren't really all that important for speaking yet he makes the tests worth more than the actual speeches you give >:( Plus he makes you see 3 outside speeches on campus and fill out sheets on them, if you don't do all three your grade drops by one letter (ex; A becomes a B) Try to get someone else if you can.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1302 - I was never worried about my grade in this class, because you will know exactly what is on the tests and how to write your speeches, but I HATED this class every second. It was way too time consuming with details that weren't even related to public speaking (like researching your topics and finding non-internet sources). I spent entire weekends just working on my speeches, and it was a total pain. Dr. English is also very boring and only fit in a few actual points every lecture. The rest of the class time was just him rambling about his little stories, and they were usually not amusing. If at all possible, take speech at a community college or NOT with Dr. English. Summary: WAY too time consuming and miserable. Not worth it.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - This was a very reasonable class that does help you become used to the act of public speaking. You really deal mostly with a TA that takes care of your grading. Also, you give a total of six speeches to a small group of approx. 9 people! As far as lecture goes, the class is pretty boring but the material is easy! TAKE NOTES because the tests are mainly free response and come straight from a review that is given out by Dr. English. Overall, it is a pretty easy class that does require a good amount of time to prepare speeches but not bad at all!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - If you are like me and competed in speech and/or debate in high school and you don't have to take this class, don't. If you can take an alternative class (like managerial communications), do that instead. I love speech, so I wish I could say that this is a fun class. It's not. Ironically, the man who teaches this class really needs to work on his own delivery. He gets WAY too detailed about unnecessary stuff and takes five minutes to say what I could say just as clearly in one. The lectures were boring and I could easily only have four lines of notes from a fifty-minute lecture. Now, having said that, the tests are easy if you do take notes because his lectures reflect exactly what will be on the test. The speeches themselves are a pain, on one or two of them I think he's too specific about the subject, which causes you to worry more about whether or not you know what you're talking about than being able to just focus on actually speaking. The outlines are a pain as well, you have to write them in full sentences. However, if you get a nice TA then the speeches themselves are not all that bad. I had Whitney and I liked her. There's plenty of opportunity for extra credit through attendance, and the one REALLY GOOD thing about this class is that on the last day of class they give you your grade report that details all the points you've earned in the semester, what your current grade is, and how high or low you would have to score on the final in order to change your grade. If you're satisfied with your grade then you don't have to take the final. In conclusion, not the worst class in the world, but pretty painful to sit through and sadly, very boring for a subject that's all about being dynamic and engaging.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:css1302 - I had mike as my TA and he was cool. Get Mike if you want to make a good grade. The actual going to class and taking notes part was boring but it was manageable. There is no homework you just meet with your speaking groups and give a speech every other week.  - Grade In Class:B+

The other half of passing is getting a cool TA, although you cant pick so you're either screwed or saved. No homework, just have to give a speech every 1-2 weeks. You can take 2 or 3 tests in addition to all your speeches. Unless you like short-term memorizing useless things, only take 2 of the tests. Dr. English is boring and rambles forever about nothing sometimes, but he is a nice guy and his class is mind-numbingly easy. I had a cool TA - I've been told Zach is the worst you can get so avoid him if possible. Speeches are very structured so just follow the outlines and you'll get A's. The tests are photocopies of what is on the 1 page review sheet he gives you, so if you can't get an A on those you are just plain lazy. The class did help me to be more comfortable speaking in public and it was also very easy so I suggest taking it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Is this an easy class? Yes. Is it a class I would recommend? No. Dr. English is possibly one of the most boring speakers I have ever heard. I normally don't have trouble paying attention in class but for this one I had to shake myself just to stay awake. The test are not hard, but you do have to study(or rather, memorize) the answers for them. Also, there's a lot of things you have to do that aren't actually graded unless you don't do them(library tour, listening reports). All these things are relatively easy but are annoying to have to do. Speeches make the majority of your grade, so if you have a easy TA, your grade should be a breeze. Also, there is an attendance policy you can sign and you can get an extra 10 points just by going to class..there also is other ways to get extra credit... possibly my easiest class at Baylor. Comments:1302 - Dr. English wasn't that bad at all. Yes, he loooves to ramble and be dramatic in his lectures....but his tests are very clear on what to study and what you are going to need to know. He gives a study guide that you need to fill in and he doesn't stray from it AT ALL for the tests. The only tough thing is the memorization - basically the only way to study for the test is to memorize a bunch of stuff that doesn't make much sense. As for the speeches, definitely try to get RYAN as your speaking instructor!! He's great and it doesn't take much to make A's on your speeches with him! This class really isn't bad at all...it makes you a muchhh better and more confident speaker whether you want to be or not! Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Attention to all: NOT EASY A! With that being said, class is underestimated in terms of its easyness. Like everyone else said, Dr. English spends the entire lecture telling some story to make his point when he could have said it in 5 minutes. You have to pick out what's important from his lecture, and take notes on that. And then, when the test comes, you're totally screwed because you realize you didn't take good enough notes. Gee, i wonder why? Oh! It's because you didn't give you any in the lecture. You basically have to figure it out from his story/lecture. Ugh, and it really depends on your TA. Comments:Business Speech - No class on Friday is nice. For notes: write down everything that comes out his mouth. Tests are mostly essay with about 10 tricky T/F. The answers on the tests have to be the exact wording that he used in class. If you take the test review sheet and answer the questions with your notes and then memorize it, you won't have any problem. Gives you the option of dropping one test, if you do well on your first 2 tests and are satisfied with your grade then you get to skip the final. Speeches are not difficult, just hope you get an easy grader. I would get to class, sign up for the last slot and make my notecard out of a folded piece of paper while everyone else gave their speeches. The speaking part is not hard but the stupid outline has to be formatted correctly which takes a little bit of time. I usually started my speeches 1-1.5 hours before it was due. Sometimes I was late but my TA didn't care and would let me give the speech anyway. I usually made low A or high B, mainly due to too short of a speech.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Business and Prof. Speech - Dr. English knows how to speak publically, and you'll realize this the first day of class. Each lecture is like a speech in and of itself, which at times kept things slightly interesting. The content itself on the other hand, not so much. Take really good notes and study hard for tests because they are short-answer responses. The overall grade depends largely on which TA you get, but if you put just a small amount of effort into preparing for your speeches they can all be easy A's. Overall, the class wasn't too difficult. One positive: no class on Fridays!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - To sum up this class in one word: ugh. Admittedly, Dr. English is a knowledgeable man, but his teaching style is very old-fashioned and boring, magnified because of the early-morning class time. Stripped down to the actually useful material, his lectures would have lasted no longer than half the class period or so - he would always go on these long, pointless tangents to layer yet another reinforcement onto a point he had made the day before. He was almost annoyingly repetitive. For a bit of consolation, the class was really easy - I started most of the speeches two hours or so before my speaking group met and made As on most of them. The tests are also annoying, but not very difficult. My recommendation? Take someone else.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-22

Comments:1302 - English is really enthusiastic which is helpful because his class was so early in the morning, but he goes off on so many stories that his class could easily be condensed into half an hour of class instead of the full 50 minutes and still cover the same amount of material. Tests were mostly essay, with some T/F. He gives a review sheet with all the info you'll need to know, so study that and take good notes and you'll do fine. Speeches are easy, I didn't complete any of them before the night before they were due and got high A's on all of them. No class on Friday, which is nice. If you take the first two tests and are happy with your grade, you don't have to take the final. If you are one of those people who always goes to class, you should sign up for the attendance incentive, and you'll get extra credit for no or minimal absences.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Dr. English is absolutely awful. I hope he reads this, too. He said on the first day of school, "I do not answer e-mails. I am a speech teacher, therefore, I want you to call me." So, before one of the tests, I called him to ask him to clarify something that was in my notes. It was like 3:00 PM; definitely not too late. He said "Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I don't answer questions before the exam. Questions are for the review session last Wednesday!" Well, OK, William. I didn't have this question at the time, I was calling to verify a very specific concept. Anyway, the class is easy. I made an A on both tests, but I struggled studying since my notes were very spotty. I had to develop a large study group. The tests are all essay and they grade tough, so make sure you take very thorough notes. That's the best advice I can give in this class. I did all the speeches the night before and did fine. As for English, though, he is a very funny guy. He was my favorite professor on day 1 and my least favorite halfway through the semester. Another example: I went to talk to him about why half the class was late (mix-up communicating where class would be) and he sits there and talks about how communication failed at such and such level and how he has no control over the attendance. In other words, he's too lazy to do anything about it, seeing as the TAs are under his leadership. A student made a fantastic point to English in class and, quite frankly, was right. English approaches the kid and stands over him and pulls the "I have a Ph.D" card or something along those lines. He will never admit that a student is right, regardless of if they are or not. He was just a bit disappointing. The only professor I have had so far who was NOT helpful in any way. Literally, I never had a question answered by him that I had asked. In fact, he seemed to try and make you feel stupid when you asked questions on review day, so I just stopped asking. Take him because it's an easy class, but just know that you will hate it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Speech - Dr. English is a very nice professor. He is one who loves to hear himself speak and is incredibly boring. He sometimes is funny but usually his class feels like it is lasting forever. His lectures are absolutely pointless but he does give you attendence extra credit if you come to class everyday. He also give you the option of taking his final or not so if you do well on your speeches then you wont have to take his final. His two tests are completely essay, so it is important to take notes during his lectures because the questions come directly from his lecture and from his study guide. You grade basically depends on your TA. If you get a good TA who grades easily then you will do well, the speeches are really easy and i put in minimal effort.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Much of your grade in this class will depend on your TA, who grades your speeches. Do not wait until the night before to begin your speech. I usually was able begin 3 or 4 days before at the latest and have time to research, form my outline and practice a little. Dr. English is very knowledgeable about the subject. Lectures can be a little boring, but he tries to throw in jokes to keep us awake. Tests are all essay/writing out ans. so TAKE CAREFUL NOTES. Write down the examples he gives you because he always asks for specific detail on tests. Class meets only Monday and Wednesday which is great. Pay attention in lecture and put a little effort into your speeches and you'll be fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Speech - Your grade in this class will heavily depend on what TA you get. My class got a tough grader. My friend got an easier TA. My whole class made low B's while my friend's speaking group got A's. Also, my TA did not let us use a timer for the first 4 speeches, so we had no idea how much time we had left at the end of each speech. Here are some tips for this class: 1. Memorize the information for the tests (because the information is so easy, and it is common sense, they have to compensate by making you write out definitions and descriptions on what the lecture was over). 2. Don't miss a speech.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2008-12-10

Comments:CSS 1302 - The class DOES depend on you TA cause he/she is the person that grades your speech. I got a very good and laid back guy who let us talk about w/e we wanted if we ran out of things to say. Some people think Dr. English's tests are hard and unclear, but I thought they were the easiest. They come right off your notes (which means, be there everyday!) and they're very direct. I loved this class! TAKE HIM!! he's real funny  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-11-27

Comments:CSS 1302 - Class all depends on your TA. Mine graded hard and I barely scraped an A, my friend got 98's on his speeches and thought it was easy. You have to put a lot of work into the speeches. Dr. English is kind of annoying when he lectures and does a lot of the things you learn not to do when speaking.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-09-16

Comments:Public Speaking - This class (Public Communication/Speech) was seriously the biggest pain in the ass, and for no reason. Contrary to what you might think, it is NOT a blow-off class. You have to put some serious work into the speeches and the tests if you want to make an A. You will have to do plenty of work for a B, even. Preparing all the stuff for the speeches is so annoying and tedious. The lectures are the most boring ones you will experience at Baylor - especially at 8 a.m. Take this class at a CC, or better yet, take something else.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-03-31

Comments:1302 - His lectures are a little boring, but the tests are easy. the grade you make is more dependent on which TA you get to grade your speeches. I apparently had one of the hardest ones and didn't put more work into my speeches than was necessary (2-3 hours max) and got an A. It should be an easy A as long as you can dedicate a small handful of hours to the speeches that are every other week.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-02-13

Comments:1302 - He is a good teacher. He is funny and I stayed awake the whole time in an 8 am class. he does not give class on fridays and his TA's are really nice. I would def recommend him. he is all about freedom to, and there is no textbook to buy just a speech book  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-01-12

Comments:1302 - Easy A. His test come from his lectures word for word and he even gives review sheets with the lectures main points and will go over it in class. No class on friday but you have to meet 6 times to say speeches. They were all easy to make up something. NOT A hard class at all.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-11-07

Comments:1301 - he is alright. pretty boring lectures but he doesn't make you go friday which is awesome! but you do have to meet 6 times with individual speaking groups and give speeches...it isn't the worst. go ahead and take him, he is funny sometimes  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-11-05

Comments:Speech - oh my. people complain too much. You can fail all the tests and still get an A in the class. The majority of the grade is your speech which is super easy. Try to get Mary as your TA. Just write the outline correctly and just talk about it for the right amount of time. EASY. I always played on my computer during class and took some notes and I got like a C on every test, but it came down to this...on the last test, since i had all A's on my speech and C's on the test...I just needed a 4 on the test to get an A in the class. EASY  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-07-13

Comments:1302 - Tests are very straightforward. Just go to class and take notes. he tells you which part of lecture to write down in your notes, so you dont have to pay much attention, and the tests come straigt from them. As far as small groups, its true you can get a great TA or an awful one. but speeches are not really that difficult, just inconvenient sometimes.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-05-15

Comments:1302 - Class isn't too bad just take notes since both the tests are straight from the lecture. Speeches aren't too bad and fairly easy topics to come up with information on. No class on fridays though so thats a plus  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2007-04-28

Comments:css 1301 - Good for an 8 AM because he talks so loudly and those chairs are so uncomfortable, it's hard to sleep. I didn't take the attendance incentive because it is an 8 AM and I do like to sleep. If you miss I think 3 classes, it starts to hurt your grade. You can prepare the speech the day of and be fine if you're naturally good at public speaking but if you're not, it shows and it's miserable for the people who have to watch. No class on friday in exchange for meeting once every two weeks in your speaking groups. TA's pretty much give you your grade so be sweet and if you get Meredith, make her laugh and you're in there like swimwear.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-02-13

Comments:1302 - This class is not as blowoff as you think. Its an easy B but a little harder to get an A. Your grade depends on your TA. Preparing speeches required a lot of work and was annoying. The tests come right off the notes so just memorize your notes and take the multiple choice form of the test and you should do fine. There was no class on Friday, that was cool.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-02-09

Comments:Speech - Blah. He's very boring. Test are hard. I had Sarah as a TA. She's okay. As long as your speech is long enough, you get good grades. So I wish I had known that a bad longer speech is better than a good shorter speech. No class Friday is good.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-01-15

Comments:1302 - Having to do a speech every other week is annoying, but it all depends on who your TA is and you have no choice as to who it is. I thought his lectures were not bad because he is a good speaker. His tests are easy and make sure you dont miss a class. I think the TA's mainly want to see an organized outline that you follow, and they want to see a good intro.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-12-16

Comments:CSS 1301 - This class is so boring!! You sit and listen to him TALK about random stuff. All you have to worry about is your TA because your grade is in their hands.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-12-14

Comments:1301 - You have a speech do every other week you are given the topics in the syllabus so it is easy to make an A. It also depends on who your TA is because your TA grades your speeches. Study guides are given for the tests. You also get to choose what type of test you want to take. It is good for an 8 oclock(I have watched people sleep through class). Attendence policy is optional with incentives for perfect attendence. Speeches are not hard they involve research with 5-7 sources, but the internet is your friend.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-11-06

Comments:Public speaking - Do not be deceived by this class. It may sound like a blow off class but it's not. But here's the thing, it really all depends on your TA that has you in your speaking group. You get extra credit for perfect (or almost perfect) attendence so go to class. You can do other homework, sleep or whatever in class. BUT you have a speech every week that requires research and outline with resources. So if you don't like research and don't have to take this class then don't. It's an easy class to get a be if you do your work, but you have to actually work really hard at it to get an A. The tests aren't bad just study the study guides he gives you and your notes from class. He also tends to hack alot in class, because he smokes right before each class which is annoying to me because I hate that smell.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2006-04-11

Comments:33__ - Here's the deal: This class is GOOD if you want to do other things in class. It's big enough where you won't get in trouble for studying for another class and easy enough to keep up. (because he repeats like a million times..) TESTS are EASY if you just read over your notes. Seriously. Do your speeches in advance. People who complain are the SLACKERS! If you have a lot of hard classes...THROW THIS ONE IN THERE. It's a little boring but good to break up all the hard-ness! TAKE THIS ADVICE!!!!!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-04-06

Comments:1302 - IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS DONT GET LACY URBANTKE AS YOUR T.A.!! If you do, make up a lie to switch! At first i thought i just wasnt a good speaker, then after the class i was listening around and seems like everyone who DIDNT have her got A's. She not helpful and was late 100% of the time when were sposed to meet!   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2006-04-03

Comments:1301 - Dr.English is a nice man, but his lectues are quite boring most of the time. It is hard to stay awake, but you must to get the proper notes for the tests. His tests are hard: however, the oral speeches are easy! Just make sure you understand all the info. forwards and backwards!Overall, this was not an awful class...there is one bright side...no class on Friday!   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-29

Comments:speech - Boring but not terrible. No class on Friday's so that is great! Your TA is going to make or break your grade. Remember that each speech is worth as much as a test so don't blow the speeches off. Always take the short form of the exam. Attendance incentive- they mess up absences a lot so you could get screwed by it unless you check it every day. Overall, easy class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-12-16

Comments:1302 - You grade in this class depends on what speaking group you get assigned to. Graduate students give you your grade on your speeches. There are 6 speeches that are fairly easy if you prepare just a little bit. I recommend taking the multiple choice form of the exam; he stresses taking the written test, but he posted the grades from the two forms of the exam and students who took the multiple choice form did much better. The test review is very helpful in studying for the tests. He offers an attendence bonus, which I suggest NOT taking because I know that some mistakes were made in recording attendence that could have actually cost students points off of their average, plus, if you ever feel like skipping or get sick it will hurt your average. Overall, a very easy class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-12-08

Comments:CSS 1301 - Dr. English is a decent teacher. His lectures are boring but if you take decent notes you should be fine. By the time you get around to the tests (there are only 3) you have forgotten everything that you knew. He has 2 tests take the SHORT FORM! I got a b and a c on the 2 tests that i took and I still got an A in the class! yes the speech groups are annoying but i did all of my speeches the night before and i always got a's. i had Meredith as a student instructor and she's cool and pretty fair on grading. I would recommend taking the class, but only if you don't mind morning classes because that's the only time that they are offered!!!!!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-12-06

Comments:1301 - Dr. English made the class extremely long and boring it would take him the entire class to cover one term, and is very strict, his tests are really hard, and basically speech a hard class by having hard ways in defining terms, He was never avaliable and the speaking groups were annoying, it is definitely not a blow off class because you have to have so many sources,  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-01

Comments:Speech - This class is very easy. The key is to get a good TA, do not get Lacy. My roomate had her and they failed every speech. I had Mary Stevenson and I got A's on all of them except 1, because I was late with it and got 10 points off. Just study for the tests, go to every class, and get your listening reports in early.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-11-11

Comments:speech - Dr. English is boring, yes, but if you take fairly decent notes, you can ace the "short form" as he calls it, with zero problems. The speeches are irritating to do, but you can throw them together the night before if you have decent public speaking abilities. Taking the so-called "Long form" is idiotic. The answers are in front of you on the short form and you don't have to deal with the subjectiveness of his TAs, you're either right or wrong. It's not that difficult to be right.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-05-09

Comments:CSS 1301 - Okay here is English in a nutshell. 1. Tests are difficult, unless you know every word he says, so concentrate more on speeches. I would definately advise you to take the short form unless you know your material very well. 2. Listening reports are very easy to do if you just do them, so guess what, get out, go do them, problem solved. 3. Speeches are not difficult, and do not take much preperation. I usually did them the morning before they were do. 4. Try your best to get a good TA, they are the workhorses of the entire operation. I had Clint, but I believe he was very close to being finished with Baylor. Try to find out from other whos the current TAs are and assess the situation from there. Your TA is the most important factor in your grade, period. Basically, I made a 73 and a 63 on each test, and I took the short form each time. Mind you, I did not study for either one. The speeches, mathematically speaking, are far more important to you. Basically put, grudge your way through the class and be smart about the grades and you will be fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-03-19

Comments:CSS 1301 - English isnt that great. His lectures are very boring and very pointless. Usually he starts talking about some part of a speech and wanders off and tells long pointless stories to emphasize his points. Speeches are pretty pointless. You can only use 1 internet source for speeches, so get used to the library. TA's do all the work for him. Take the short m/c form of the test even though he tells you the essay form is easier. unless you are sure you can wake up for class do not take the attendance incentive, its not worth it. not the best class to have early in the morning.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-03-08

Comments:1301 - He reeks of sweat and smoke when he walks in the room every morning. If you get lucky and sit in the middle of the room it won't be too bad (alphabetical order). He has his TA's do everything for him, so he's pretty much useless. Always take the short form of his tests. Don't take the attendance incentive if you skip when a prof bores you or like sleeping in.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2005-02-13

Comments:1301 - This class was easy. You don't have classes on Friday and he wants you to learn the material. Take the short test, the long form is evil. I did every speech the night before or sometimes even that day.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-01-11

Comments:1301 - This class is a joke. The tests aren't that easy but if you get a good TA (Clint is the man) then you're fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-12-14

Comments:CSS 1301 - Dr. English is a nice man...seeing as how the auditorium is set up so everyone sits in alphabetical order...I was in the very front row...he smokes too much and don't expect to get out of class early! MAKE FRIENDS IN THIS CLASS! They will help you tremendously when it comes to Listening Reports and such. I wouldn't sign up for the attendance incentive program..I did, and had to force myself to go to class so I wouldn't get points taken off my grade! I took the long form the first test...made a B+...would have done better if I would have taken the short form...took the short form the 2nd test...did fine...so if you don't know the info that well...TAKE THE SHORT FORM! Get Clint as a T.A. he's awesome and if you're a girl...it sometimes may seem like he has a crush for you...which makes your grade not too shabby. I wrote every speech the night before it was due...no biggy. I would suggest printing your entire outline on the index card you can take in for your speaking group. Just remember: TAKE THE SHORT FORM, DON'T SIGN UP FOR THE INCENTIVE PROGRAM, MAKE FRIENDS IN THE CLASS, AND TAKE CLINT FOR YOUR SPEAKING GROUP! Class was a breeze..:)  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-12-09

Comments:CSS 1301 - Sometimes the room smells very hevy of smoke, so if you are illergic, expect a heart attack. Keep up with your speeches and tests so that you don't have to take the final. Its an easy A grade if you put SOME effort into it. The lectures are very boring, but are needed for the test, make a friend so that you can get their notes. Sign the attendance for 10 points, thats what put my grade at an A! The first test was multiple choice then second was true or false and tricky.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Where oh where to start with Willy B. English....He is quite a guy. He smokes like a chimney first of all, so thats fun to deal with in conversation, but he basically gets on his soapbox, and rambles for 52 minutes (keeping you late), and then go on tangents about his getting offered marijuana in a parking lot ("the roach man, want some roach?"). He is a terrible teacher, and you have 100x more involvement with your TA's, so lets hope u get a good one. Dave was awesome, but he's leaving, Derek is a pain in the neck, Renee is supposed to be...ok. I enjoyed this class as much as I would enjoy getting my prostate checked from the incredible hulk. English gives almost no homework save the weekly speeches you have to much, which I improv'd 100% of the time, so they arent that bad, but finding sources can be a pain. His tests are wickedly tricky at times, TAKE THE SHORT FORM. The long form is an instrument of the evil, and the short form, while not enjoyable itself, is the lesser of two evils. His class is boring and you wont learn a damn thing. Screw this. Wait for another class to open up in small group communication or something before u even dare consider the idea of taking English. Boo

Comments:1302 - English's class time is a real drag - you pretty much have to force yourself to listen and take notes exactly as he says them, because it's all on the tests. The tests are harder than they should be, but the speeches matter the most. Your TA is a huge factor in what grade you earn in this class, so ask around and pick one of the easier speech instructors.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-05-15

Comments:1302 - This is not a blow off class! You need to really keep up with your speeches....and the TA's definately show favoritism!! The tests are not bad at all. I would recommend Prof English.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2004-05-10

Comments:CSS - Prof. English's class will seem like the easiest class in the world, but his tests are very difficult. You have the choice of a short T/F test or a long essay test-- he will tell you in the beginning of the year to take the longer test because students score higher, and even though you will have to study longer and harder, TAKE THE LONG FORM! You'll have to give 6 or 7 speeches, which aren't too bad, depending on the TA you get. Overall, class is a little boring but if you stay awake and take notes, you should do fine. He's a good professor. TAKE HIM.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-04-30

Comments:1302 - Ok this is basically the same thing as the last review. Dr. English is cool- nice man. Relatively easy to listen to, although by the end of the semester it almost starts getting on your nerves. Speaking groups- I wouldn't recommend picking a Monday as your speaking group because then it always hits your right at the beginning of the week. I did mine on Tuesday afternoons and it was perfect because I wrote the speech on Monday and it was all over and done by tuesday allowing me to be free the rest of the week. Luckily, I had DEREK who is no-nonsense, get in and get out, helpful and an easy grader. Try and get him- it'll be good. Tests: OK the whole testing situation ticks me off. They flaunt having 2 different types of tests and that the long form is good for those afraid of misreading and getting tripped up on the short form. NOT SO! The long form is rediculous. I took every single note he spoke and I studied for more than an hour and I took the long test and wrote my heart out and still sucked it up. It is absurd how much information they want your to put on there and it can't just be the general idea they basically want the exact phrase he said in class. Its just retarded. Take the short form and even then you should try to get the test before. I had an easy A in the class except for that first long form test pushed my average down to an 89 and they aren't rounding up- so I'm serious when I saw TAKE THE SHORT FORM and study like you're gonna take the long form. Ok-thats it!   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2004-04-29

Comments:1302 - I would definately reccomend English. He speaks well, but almost too well which can get annoying. Whatever anyone else tells you, DON'T TAKE THE LONG VERSION on the tests. Although you are given the questions ahead of time and you may think that you know the answer, you don't. The grading on the long versions is VERY PICKY!!! Go for the short. But it really all comes down to what TA you get. I had Jennifer who is very nice, but who is also BY FAR the hardest grader. Don't get her, Dereck is the easiest.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:speech - Well he is so boring and the attendence accentive sucks bc when you hit 4 absences he starts deducting points from your garde. Watch out for the multiple choice tests...try to find the copies to written tests they are everywhere!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2004-04-12

Comments:1302 - ~*Sigh*~ Dr. English is a very nice man. But I think I would rather undergo a root canal without the drugs than listen to him lecture just ONE MORE TIME. His entire 50 minute lecture could be condensed down to about 3 minutes, and everyone would still understand the material perfectly. The speeches are too terribly difficult, but the tests are. Study like you're going to take the long form, but take the multiple choice...for the long form, the TA's look for word-for-word definitions that are really long. Get Rene as your TA...she's awesome!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSS 1302 - Great class although the curriculum is unnecessary. If you want to learn how to be an effective public speaker, just watch Dr. English lecture. Brooke is a great TA also.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - BEST SPEECH CLASS EVER!! Hated Listening Reports! Overall, He is very funny! Can get on your nerves sometimes! Speeches every other week are easy! Wrote speech the day of... and made ALL A's! Get Rene as your TA! She's great! Comprehensive test is harder, than M/C. But can be better if you memorize the review!! He's easy!! You'll make an easy A-B. GREATEST CLASS EVER!!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2003-11-24

Comments:First Speech class - This class is SUPER easy, You have got to study hard for the written tests though. Making an A was so simple. I even wrote my speeches the night before and I got an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2003-11-13

Comments:1301 - Well, the actual assignments are not so bad. Depending on who your TA is, you can get an easy A. Actually listening to the man talk is a different story. I would rather shoot myself in the foot than listen to him lecture. BORING. Plus, he uses phrases like "Methinks" and everything is "the next best thing since sliced bread". He always tries to use an announcer-type of voice and it is always like he is just enjoying listening to himself talk. Take the class, it's easy, but do yourself a favor and glaze over while he talks. Seriously.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2003-11-12

Comments:1301 - If you can take a nap anywhere anytime, I don't recommend Dr. English. I have a problem of being able to sleep through any circumstance, and although he can be quite interesting and is a pretty good public speaker, mostly his lectures are just stories relating to his points of the day. If you just study the sheet he gives before the test, you'll do fine, I'm sure. Don't take the long form of the test, no matter how easy he says it is. One of his TA's screwed me over even though I studied 2 hours for it. Speeches do require more effort. A hint- don't try to cram all of your speech's work into one day. I recommend having Jennifer for a TA- she's not anal at all and very reasonable.   - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2003-11-10

Comments:The only real work in this class is the speeches... and that is not so bad because the TA's are great. But the man himself is like a big cartoon so try not to laugh too hard the first time he opens his mouth.

Comments:Tests aren't that hard as long as you study...the NIGHT BEFORE. Take the multiple choice exams, he gives you an option to take esay or m/c even though he says esay is eaiser take the m/c test!! TA's are really cool. Speeches are not that difficult. If you can get Summer as your speaking group leader.

Comments:I didn't really like Dr. English. I thought the class was really boring and I hated the way he lectured, it was like he was trying too hard to impress us with his public speaking skills. But the TA's were cool and it's an easy A if you put an average amount of work into it.

Comments:I feel asleep in this class cause I thought the subject was boring. The bad part about the class is that you have to meet 1hr/week and do a speech with a TA. The TA's are cool tho' and this is not hard at all. If you take his MWF, then you don't meet on Fridays. His test aren't real hard & most of the final grade comes from your speeches which the TA's grade. I put in average effort and got an A.

Comments:His tests are easy, as long you take notes during class. You only see him during lecture though. The people his picks for his TAs are really nice and they will help you out as much as they can. It's not a bad class to take. I think he is one of the easier professors I've taken.

Comments:Dr. E wasn't exactly "impressive" as a teacher, but all in all it wasn't so bad, the TAs are the real teachers, and they are usually pretty tight

Comments:Dr. English is fun to listen to and keeps the class from being too boring. He has 2-3 test and about 6 speeches that you do in a speech group of about 10 people. I really hate speech but this class overall hasent been so bad so I recomend it.
