Comments:REL 1350 - I took the Honors College section of this course. Most of the reviews below are true- Dr. Tran is hilarious and very invested in his students thinking critically and intellectually about various issues the Christian church has faced through the centuries. However, structure is not his strong point. Although I really wanted to engage in discussion, I did get a little bored with the weekly rehash of themes. I liked the readings, they were not difficult at all, but the test/quiz things were weird and I could not figure out what he wanted until I just started restating basically what he argued in class. As a result, I was disappointed that it seemed like he wanted us to admit his view was right even though he told us to think for ourselves. And as a white girl, I did feel a bit like I was being targeted or blamed for the world's problems. Dr. Tran says what he feels like saying because he is "a minority with tenure" (his words, not mine) so he can be both uproariously funny and a little shocking. Like others have said, if you are easily offended or don't want to think, this class is not for you.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Here's the deal. Tran isn't your average professor. If you get offended easily by getting your beliefs challenged, then maybe his heritage class isn't for you. But if you enjoy intellectual discussion that encourages different ways of thinking, Tran is your man. Tran can defend any viewpoint incredibly, conservative to liberal, atheist to religious, evolutionist to creationist, Tran is by far the best devil's advocate I have seen in my college classes at Baylor. Tests are fairly easy, reading is fairly simple (But maybe a bit for a required class.) I think all Baylor students should have a professor like Tran in their collegiate career, one that is willing to assault the social norms at Baylor and encourage new ways of thinking. Great class. Highly recommend.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL 3390 Xtian Ethics - This is the only rating you need to read. Tran is the most competent professor I've had at Baylor. If you don't have a curious mind, and if you're easily offended because you have fragile beliefs and aren't willing to be challenged, you won't like Dr. Tran. That's the reason for the poor ratings below. Do you want to be coddled in college? Do you want to be spoon fed textbook answers? Great! You're wasting $40,000 a year when you could just go sit in your mothers bosom and suck at her teat! If, instead, you want your entire worldview, your whole stance toward theology, ethics, philosophy of language, economics and sexuality challenged to their very core, take a class with Tran and befriend him. He is a wise dude, but also a lovable and approachable, SoCal guy. I've also had him for Bioethics and its a phenomenal course. Tran is a VERY thoughtful professor when it comes to controversial topics. Do I disagree with him on a lot of things? Absolutely! But we have a great time arguing. Quit hesitating, stop looking to BUbooks for affirmation, just take his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GLLC 3101 - If Tran teaches his religion classes like he taught the review for global, I feel sorry for those who take him. He spent about an hour ranting on a conspiracy theory that scarcity is a lie. The précis assignments were horrifically vague at best and the only way to get above an 80 or 85 on them was to come to the extra précis discussions where you learned about the secret hidden questions in the prompt. Half the time the prompts had nothing to do with the terrible books we were reading, but you had to address the chapters you read, anyway. He seems pretty nice at first, but he is unorganized and not a good teacher.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GLLC1101 - Dr. Tram was probably the worst teacher for global I have ever heard of. His précis's were ambiguous at best and he later told us that he starts everyone off at an 80 and then might grace us with extra points. He has no rubric or structure. The novels he had us read were completely unrelated and both had a heavy bias that he deemed correct because he agreed with Them. He finished off our semester by spewing a crazy theory that was borderline conspiracy theory and again, had nothing to do with the class. I feel bad for any and all of his students and would not recommend him to anyone for any subject. He seems nice but always has an agenda and is not very forthcoming.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4395 - Tran is a great professor and Bioethics was honestly the best class I have ever taken at Baylor. It challenged my beliefs and made me think of my life differently. Tran is a good discussion leader and he is super nice. The precis assignments are easy enough, and the readings really do not take that long. There are only two tests: the midterm and the final and he gives you the questions ahead of time so that you can prepare. Then for the test, he only chooses a few. I recommend the class and Tran.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL4395 - Bioethics was not enjoyable, especially at 8am in the morning. The precis assignments were more than often ambiguous and deliberately confusing. Tran is too laid back and I thought his unkempt hair, sagging pants etc were offensive. Every now and then, I learned something. I did like his exams and knowing the questions before hand. I never read the readings entirely only the portions that answered the preces questions. It is not a hard class but it is not enjoyable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bioethics - Pretty laid back professor. The class is a whole lot of reading, and you have to do write ups for each reading every night... but the reading assignments are pretty easy to get through. the class is really interesting and i would recommend it to anyone.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:The Christian Heritage - Dr. Tran is a very helpful professor. He is more than willing to work with the students who seem to be interested in learning the material. He takes a fresh perspective on religion, a much-needed trait in Baylor professors. The reading is usually boring, but that is simply a question of interest. His lectures are helpful in narrowing down the important material, and sometimes expose the reality of our world (poverty, prostitution, war, etc.), which is often ignored by Americans, and specifically Baylor students.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Although at first he comes off as a great speaker and you think you will never want to sleep in his class, you come to find out that his lectures are unbearably boring...his class is just ideas, weird ideas, that he describes over and over again, just changing the words a little each time. All I had to do for this class was unwillingly show up and not listen, and then right before each test, completely MEMORIZE the powerpoints (don't worry its not much there...but good luck making sense of them). I did not learn anything.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Its not really a difficult course, but you have to study. Tran can be confusing. He is a great teacher, but he did make bad judgement when he let a student say ths "N" word in class, and didn't even tell the guy to apologize for anyone he may have offended. Besides the situation, he is a great guy and has a beautiful family!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - Dr. Tran is a pretty funny guy. His class is pretty easy. if his lecture is on blackboard then going to lecture is absolutely pointless. he is very hard to follow and talks about things that really arent relavent to Christian Heritage. Dr. Trans class was more philisophical than historical, but his tests were easy....very easy (our class had 74 A's, 67 B's in a class of around 200 or 225 on our second test). be prepared though to possibly be affended, he seems to have a thing against white people, and he allowed our class to get pretty hostile one day when he was discussing Affirmative Action. the last half of the semester seems to have an "it's the white man's fault" undertone. if you are black or white and easily affended then it might not be the best class. it is pretty easy though. and if you have perfect attendance then 3 points get added to your final grade. see if he has a MWF because an hour and half of him is torture by bordom.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Hands down, Dr. Tran is one of the best professors at Baylor. The reason people do not like him is because they don't like the course material, but I honestly could have sat in his lectures everyday. He approaches the material very creatively and really challenges you to think for yourself. The tests are not that bad if you study (just memorize the powerpoint slides). I HIGHLY recommend him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Maybe it's just because I don't find the course material interesting, but I honestly dreaded coming to this class every day. I would have skipped more, but he starts to deduct points after 4 absences. Sometimes his lectures are entertaining, but most of the time he gets off topic- and has been to known to stir up the class on some pretty heated issues that really have nothing to do with Christian Heritage. His lectures are really deep and philosophical, so if you like that type of stuff- take him. If not, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. Only take his class if you can stand insults about everything from your race to religion. He gives no homework, but his tests are random and dificult, involving loads of dry book-reading and tricky multiple choice questions. He also shows disturbing and/or violent videos in class of people being molested, burned to death etc. I am not even joking.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - Very nice guy, really worth all the reading. The majority of the test is directly from the powerpoints, most of which get posted on blackboard. All around wonderful professor who I highly recommend!   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Professor Tran is a funny guy. He comes to class with some stories and tries to help you stay awake when the topic is over something boring. I think he taught the material very clearly and by taking notes, I think you'll do pretty well in his class. His test is alittle bit difficult but almost 95 percent of the test is on his notes (if you take good notes). Almost no other workload and he's usually there if you wanna come talk to him. Test consist of mutliple choice and matching. No hw and no quizzes.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1350 - Great prof and really helpful. You have to read for the tests, but the class is worth it. He really cares about students doing well, so if you ask for help, he certainly will give it to you. I made a B+ on the first exam, C on the second, and then A+ on the last two because I really got in there and worked for it. Great class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Dr. Tran is the worst. He is very unclear on what he wants on the tests, first part of the semester he just stood there and lectured and were supposed to know what to write down. He goes off on political and racial tangents that mean nothing, and he draws these bizarre diagrams that are very hard to follow. Im sure he knows his stuff but I would highly recommend anyone else  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1350 - Horrible teacher. Take Dean Martin if you can. He gives break downs of the test, but they don't help at all. He never makes himself clear nor does he clarify what you really need to know for his tests. His tests are pretty bad b/c a lot of the time you can pick two answers that would be correct, but he wants one ... he's been known to give pts back to people who argued this on questions. He had to curve the first test. The class is MWF and everyone around me thinks its a TH. Talks about irrelvant things ... I cant tell you more about his family then the about the class.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1350 - Professor Tran is an AMAZING professor!! He is very understanding and very helpful. He also enjoys teaching and tries his best to help you understand his lectures. In order to do well in his class, YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. Most of his tests come from his lectures. (His lectures are actually fun, entertaining at times, and somewhat interesting.) You also have to read for his class, but the reading assignments are like 10 short pages per class period. (It's really not that bad.) He also gives a break-down for all his tests. If you go to class, study what is on the break-down, and read, you will do great!!   - Grade In Class:A
