Comments:1310 - Dr. Carey is honestly one of the best professors Iv'e taken at Baylor so far. His classes are super entertaining and he tells stories that make the topic make more sense. He gives extra credit sometimes just for showing up, and especially when the Lady Bears Basketball team wins. He loves Ms. Mei's cookies, seriously bring them to every class, he gives extra credit or easier tests because of it. You get to have a cheat sheet on the tests, front and back. Honestly his teaching made me love learning about the Bible. Definitely take him for 1310!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - If you do the homework you will pass regardless, and his lectures are fun, but I would never take his class again. He often puts things on the test that you've never heard of. Admittedly, this is my lowest grade I've ever made in Baylor. He allows cheat sheets for each test but his entire test is matching and extremely difficult. When I first told him I could not do the homework because the book store was out of the textbook he told me "sounds like your problem." My least favorite professor at Baylor so far.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:REL 1350 - He teaches heritage the exact same way he teaches scriptures, and he's very interesting! Not the easiest A but it is definitely not impossible and his lectures are pretty interesting! Overall would recommend if you don't mind doing a little work and actually want to enjoy this class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - This class was the only one I didn't receive an A in, but Newman's class is so interesting & informative that I would still take him again. To get an A write down EVERYTHING he says during his lectures and actually pay attention when reading the assigned books. The difference between an A and B student in his class is how much attention you pay to the little details. An A is totally possible, but I wouldn't take Newman if you need to make an A.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Newman likes to make you think he's a mean professor, but he's seriously great! His lectures are very interesting (bring him Ms. Mei's cookies and he'll be your best friend, might even give you extra credit). We did random attendance quizzes when there weren't a lot of people (you literally write your name and a "10" at the top and he gives you 10 points)...so go to class. It's honestly worth it, he's really interesting and passionate about what he is teaching. Loves Baylor with all of his heart - when the Bears do good he is always in a good mood the following class!! Workload is alright, and the only reason I put a 3 for availability is because he leaves the country a lot for different things. You get a cheat sheet (front and back) on his tests, and he rewrites them every semester...but this semester they were pretty straightforward! Take detailed notes and you'll be fine!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Overall, he's not a bad professor. He's funny and energetic, and if you like just listening to lectures rather than seeing powerpoints, he's your guy. The reason I dropped this class is the workload. It's a ton. I had this class late in the day and sitting through the lectures was hard enough already, but the work we had to do was simply too much for a required class. Pretty much daily there's questions (handwritten only) due on the reading from one of four books we had to buy, and on top of that, twice were we given extra assignments via email. I was already feeling like this class was too much, but after I got an email on a Friday before a three-day weekend about a 1-2 page, single-spaced essay about two online readings and a video, I deleted the email and went to BearWeb to drop the class. TL;DR, the prof is a good teacher and he's fun to listen to on occasion, but don't torture yourself with his workload. Wait until you can get an easier Heritage prof.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1310 - DR. NEWMAN IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR AT BAYLOR! He only lectures, but they are so interesting and entertaining he makes you want to listen. His homework load seemed like a lot at the beginning of the semester, but it really isn't. The homework grades really help you. There are no quizzes, only homework (which is a page of notes on your readings-super easy) and tests. He also gives random free quiz grades during class. For example, one day he gave everyone 20 points because a girl ran the line with a fractured foot. Another set of random points because someone brought him Memo cookies. (Points really matter when the course is point based) Yes, his tests are hard, but you get to use a piece of NB paper front and back on the test, so if you take good notes the tests aren't bad at all! He really is a great professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Forget the bad reviews, I looked at those before I started my first semester here and got super worried. Found out it was all for nothing, yeah he comes off a little stern and hard in the beginning, but trust me he is a lot more friendlier than you initially think. Newman gives energetic lectures and creates all sorts of analogies and tells stories to make sure you get what he's saying. He gives you easy ways to have a 100 average in homework/quizzes sections. Just do the daily reading, which yeah can seem like a heavy workload, but in the end he gives you 100s for completion. Newman also makes you read other books but all you have to do really is write notes as your reading along and then put them all into a summary ( 2 pages single spaced) and he gives you a 100 once again for just completing it! For this class you have to pay attention (which isn't hard because he's really good at making things interesting!) and take really good notes, don't be afraid to ask questions because he is super open to questions and loves when students show interest. He also will give random free 100 quiz grades for just the craziest things, once someone brought him cookies from memo and we all got a free quiz grade of a 100! His tests are very detailed, but he lets you take a full sheet (back and front) of notes to every test, If you take good notes you'll do just fine! Most tests consist of free response, true or false, multiple choice, and maybe an essay. Do all the work , take good notes, and listen to his lectures, and everything will work out! Truly he opened my eyes to a lot about religion and I would take this class again in a heartbeat! TAKE THIS CLASS!! its somewhat a lot of work but definitely worth it when it helps you have an A!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - He is my absolute favorite professor. The work load is light and he lets you have a cheat sheet on every exam. He lectures the entire time, but they are the most interesting lectures I've ever experienced. He absolutely loves his class and loves religion. He's a very wise man. He loves Baylor more than anything else in existence. Just don't be late to his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL 1310 - Certainly not the easiest professor you could take for Scriptures, Dr. Newman at least makes it an enjoyable class. If you get on his good side you'll receive quite a few perks, and if you get on his bad side... good luck. The class was split 50/50 midterm/final, which made receiving an A quite difficult but definitely doable. The assignments are long, but since there are only two grades you don't technically have to do all of them. If he offers extra credit do it- I ended up one point short of an A but he bumped me up because I put in the effort. He also tends to let class out early very frequently. In short, I would take another professor if I wanted an easier class but having Dr. Newman is a fun experience.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Dr. Newman is extremely passionate about what he teaches. He's so engaging and easy to listen too! Also, he's probably the biggest Baylor fan there is on campus. But besides him being a really cool guy, he's not my favorite professor teaching wise. He's a lecture based teacher. He talks, you write. Occasionally he'll write something on the board, but that doesn't really do much good since his handwriting is so terrible. We used to tease him for how bad it was. He only has a midterm and a final which is all short answer. Makes it impossible to study for especially when he won't really tell you what material to review. His teaching method just didn't click with me. It may for some other people. Super awesome guy, but I wouldn't take his class again. Also, I know he looks at the reviews posted on here. He told us so.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:REL 1350 - Forget all the nice things the people below me have said about Newman; this guy is an a-hole. I had a previous school sponsored trip planned in which I would miss two days of school, and one of those days happened to be on a test day, which he told me in private that he would work something out with me and to shoot him an email. So, being completely polite the entire process, I email him about taking the test earlier. This a-hole emails me back with a cute little email saying "Oh, I've changed my mind, you can just take a 0 for the exam." Biggest jerk I've ever met. Don't take this professor.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:Christian Scripture - Where can I begin? Dr. Newman will either be the best teacher you've ever had in your ENTIRE life, or he'll be hell on wheels, it all depends how you learn best. First off, I'll tell you why I love him as a teacher. Dr. Newman is the most energetic teach I've had in all of my life, he goes into our 2:30 Religion class like it's 10AM and he begins teaching like we're his only class, his love for Baylor is so contagious, you'll exit his class loving our school and armed with more than a few good A&M jokes comebacks. More than a professor, I see him as my grandpa teaching me about the Bible and life all at once. He is full of insight about this seemingly complicated book we call THE BIBLE, and he can make sense out of everything, believe me when I tell you that ALL questions are "Excellent questions". His lectures are that- lectures- DO NOT expect power point presentation or a nice outline, because life doesn't have outlines. However, he will go over and over the main points, meaning that even if you suck at taking notes, you'll at least get the main idea. This course is not hard at all, except the grade you get depends solely on how you manage your time for it. This year our grade consists of only 2 tests (Mid Term and Final), no homework, no quizzes, no papers, no nothing. He does let you have one page of notes to aid you in the test. THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON TO DROP/FAIL THIS CLASS. If you let go of this opportunity, you'll regret it for the rest of your stay at Baylor. ALL THE COOL KIDS HAD DR. NEWMAN FOR RELIGION 1310.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - This is my blow-off course of the semester. TAKE NEWMAN. Just do your readings and take copious notes during class. Review right before the tests and you will be golden. He is extremely engaging, one of the most fun professors. He likes to scare freshmen by pretending he's going to be a tough professor but its just an act! Don't be put off by his boisterous caffeinated personality! He's a teddy bear at heart. Would heartily recommend him with the caveat that he's gone half the semester traveling and he's not super available.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-01-14

Comments:1310 - Dr. Newman is really cool! First off, he's in love with Baylor. Wear Baylor clothing on quiz days and get extra credit (maybe); wear Aggie/Longhorn clothing and face his wrath. Even if you make smart little remarks about Baylor being better than A&M/UT, you might get extra credit individually. I learned that if he brings up the midterm, and asks for propositions, suggest to him that you all go to Dr.Pepper hour (if around that time) and ask that y'all receive an A on the midterm. A girl suggested that and (as a class) we all left to get free Dr.Pepper floats and received As on our midterm! Don't be late to his class, or he'll get mad (or so he says he will). And DON'T ask to change the final date/time; you get what you get. Don't expect him to be there most of the time. He is all over the world for religious/academic reasons I do not know. Savannah is nice, Jordan can be bossy. Both TAs are helpful though. As far as teaching, he makes the bible seem fun and interesting. I learned more through him than through bible school! I didn't read the assigned readings as much, but I suggest it (you never know when there's a pop quiz). There are for sure 3 or 4 tests throughout the semester. They cover the map of the Old/New Testament and some things from the material. He puts Baylor pride questions here and there (e.g. T/F: God loves Baylor and hates the Aggies), that type of thing. What I absolutely HATED was that he gave you a study guide but the questions on the quiz were more than just the study guide. So either have a great background on the bible and its stories or read/study. Both the midterm and the final are accumulative. No homework assignments, & an essay on Acts (more info later in the semester). Overall, Newman is really cool, but can hurt your GPA.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Heritage - I really liked Newman's class most of the time. This guy REALLY REALLY REALLY loves Baylor and will remind you of it just about every class day. He is gone a lot because he travels the country speaking at other universities. He really likes to come in on Fridays and tell you to turn in an attendance quiz then let you go. The workload is really easy and only consists of daily readings that are usually quite interesting and sometimes quizzes from the book that are over the reading and are also really easy. His tests are a bit strange though. They are multiple choice but the questions can be pretty random.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - I never read anything and most times just played minesweeper and got on Facebook while he talked. He's a chill teacher and knows his stuff, and is also in love with Baylor. He doesnt really take role, but show up to class, because when a lot of people miss he tends to give free quizes where you get a 100 just for being there. I would probably take him again. Oh and never wear clothes from a different school, he will put you on blast!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL1310 - No Blackboard, No Notes, No Class on multiple occasions (At least four times throughout the semester without warning) and No clear lectures. When he is persuaded to give out a study guide, he wont even follow it when coming up with the exam. He is a nice person that seems to have a passion for Baylor but that is NO excuse for teaching in such a "Carefree" manner. This class is my only C, I must admit that I am not the most religious person but he should have done a lot better in communicating what was required of us in this Freshman class.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - My overall impression: every lecture is a sermon. He is an incredible man with a lot of zeal. However, he's never here. He's an international ambassador for Baylor and uses graduate students for his subs. They have powerpoints, which is awesome. He doesn't even activate Blackboard so that kind of shows how much love he has for technology. Anyway, whenever he is here, it's awesome. I learn a lot about the purpose of Christianity and how the authors and characters of the Bible are a vessel to reach us. Even though this is 'Christian Scriptures,' he doesn't dissect each book of the Bible and he won't test you over it. There's a lot of outside reading, which I would recommend. His tests are straightforward from the textbook and his lectures. Whenever he's not here and there's a graduate student, don't leave the classroom. They'll give you a basic understanding of the topic, which helps. Overall, don't be afraid of his rating here. He's incredibly knowledgeable about Christianity and admits when he doesn't know. If you're agnostic or atheist, he won't try to convert you. It's really just universal food for thought.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - Dr. Newman was the best teacher I had freshman year. He is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and also makes witty comments to keep the class interested. Initially when I read the other ratings on Dr. Newman, I considered switching out. His tests are a good test of your knowledge. I didn't read much for this class because his lectures cover everything you need. He is an amazing man and teacher and I would recommend him a million times over! He will scare you in the beginning with a couple pop quizzes but they come less frequently as the semester progresses, especially if you bake him chocolate chip cookies ;)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - My first class of my freshman year and it was at 8 AM. The first thought that always came to mind when I sit down for Dr. Newman's class "Oh man, what in the world did I get myself into?!" Dr. Newman is a nice guy, but it was his tests that gave me an eyesore on my transcript. I think I fail all of his test and I should had made an F, but on the last day of class he asked us three simple questions. 1. What would you like to make in this class? 2. What grade to think you will make? and 3. What grade do you think you should deserve? I answered A,D,C and and I keep wondering if all of my hard work was based off of this one quiz. Take him if you can take good notes. Otherwise be prepared to study  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:Religion 1305 - If you are not an auditory learner, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I went to every class, listened (and relistened) to every lecture, read all of the textbook readings, and studied for the final several hours. He does not use notes to lecture but just stands up and talks (often off topic). This is the only class I made a B in, but it's because his test questions are random(not on his lectures or study guide). He is a great person, I would just not take him as a teacher unless you do not learn visually.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-12-15

Comments:scriptures - I couldn't stand this course. Dr. Newman has really neat views on God and is obviously a devout Christian which is awesome but when it comes to teaching, he was the worst professor I had my freshman year. His lectures are boring and there is no visual aid so all you can do is try and scratch down everything that comes out of his mouth. The tests are extremely difficult and hard to prepare for because the amount of material covered. I don't know how I even made a B. Take someone else.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-11-01

Comments:1310 - dont take. disorganized lectures, would be alot more clear if he used power points/blackboard but he doesnt. Tests are hard.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2010-05-03

Comments:1310 - Newman's class is really hard. The material and themes involved aren't difficult, but the tests kill you. One of my roommates failed the course, and my suitemate passed with a 72 or so. The attendance quizzes help, but the tests drop your average real easily.   - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2010-04-21

Comments:1310 - Mr. Newman is a very funny and nice guy. He teaches some interesting stuff, but his tests are very hard. I barely skimmed by in this class and I read the assigned readings, took notes and studied for his class the most. He is a great guy adn a good teacher, but his tests kill his class. There are 3 tests the whole year, one extra credit essay, and 13 quizes. He takes the 10 best grades and bout 10 of the 13 are attendance quizes (i.e. "Who do you want to win the football game this weekend? Baylor or Texas?")  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2009-12-13

Comments:REL 1310 - This is the best professor I've had. You can tell he really has a passion for what he does. He really brings the material to life in his lectures (makes for a great 8 o'clock). He doesn't take attendance, and instead gives free quiz grades to make sure you show up. He connects with the students on a personal level and cares about you individually. The only thing you should be warned of is that the material is sometimes harder if he's not in a good mood. Other than that, make sure you wear Baylor attire to his class... it will help your grade.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2009-10-13

Comments:Scriptures - Fun teacher. He enjoys teaching Scriptures, and his class isn't difficult at all. The best thing I can reccommend is taking good notes in class. Personally, I'm not a good note taker, so I went online and researched the main topics that were going to be on the test. The tests are all essay, and you must pay careful attention to his directions or you'll mess up on the first test like I did. He let us out at least half an hour early nearly every day that semester. There is no homework or any other type of work other than studying for the tests. Great teacher to consider for slackers.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - Newman's the best professor i've had at Baylor so far. he's funny and very engaging and easy to listen to. great lecturer. also he's one of those teachers that pretends to be a bad guy, but he's no good at it. great teacher, very cool views on God and scripture, he's not hardcore conservative baptist, he's a cool guy that obviously loves and trusts God.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-01-11

Comments:1310 - Dr. Newman is an awesome professor. In fact, he is probably one of my favorite professors that I've had thus far at Baylor. I've heard nightmare stories about the Religion classes at Baylor and how dreadful they are, but Newman's class is an exception. Not only is he a wonderful teacher and is extremely intelligent in his field, but he is also super funny and tells stories almost every class period. You'll definately have to study and read some for the tests in his class, but it's not a strenous workload. I definately recommend that you take from him!  - Grade In Class:B+
