Comments:ENG 3310 - I adore Dr. Butler. He is one of the kindest professors I've had at Baylor. I took a linguistics class with him and was really out of my element. He made a subject that is really hard to understand and made it something I did well at. He records his lectures which was such a great study tool along with offering some extra credit.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:LING 1305 MINIMESTER - TAKE THIS. Easiest A, and was entirely online for the minister. Everything is open note/book/slides. Lowest 2 quizzes are dropped. You can do the quizzes without having read the material, but do need to pay attention to lecture videos and take notes.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Intro to Linguistics - Dr. Butler is an amazing teacher. He really cares that the students learn the material but isn't difficult about it. He wants people to succeed in his class and it shows. I have nothing bad to say about him, I would have an A if I had tried harder towards the beginning.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3310, 3312, 3319 - Dr. Butler is an absolutely great professor and I have loved, and will continue to love, taking his classes. He is a great professor, very personable, kind, easy-going, and very knowledgeable and passionate about Linguistics. As a Lang/Ling major, I really appreciate this. He makes the subject content easy to understand and interesting, and even the few non-English/non-Linguistics majors that have to take one of his courses usually end up enjoying, or at the very least not disliking them. If you can take Dr. Butler for any of your courses, do it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3310 - Dr. Butler is a great professor. He makes the class interesting, shows the occasional video or two, and never really gives homework besides occasional readings (some of which are optional, some of which may be covered on exams). There's no homework besides weekly online quizzes which you should definitely read the book for. The book was a necessary buy for these quizzes, because he doesn't cover all of the content in the quizzes in class. The exams are easy and he definitely grades with grace. Overall, this is a great class, and he's a great professor. Definitely take him if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3310 - TAKE CLAY BUTLER. The most joyful professor Baylor has. I'm an accounting major and took his linguistics and grammar classes to fulfill my communication credit, and it was the best decision ever. As long as you actually put time into his class and study, you should be fine. The tests from both classes were super fair. The workload in both classes is completely manageable. Dr.Butler could teach basket weaving, and I would probably take it because it is evident how much he cares about his students. Any time I went into his office hours for questions, he was so willing to help me understand any and everything. He literally uses bible verses and hymns to diagram sentences. A true Baylor gem.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:LING 3312/3315/4302/4316/ - I've really enjoyed every single one of Dr. Butler's classes. I've always learned a lot from his classes, and he has a way of making class fun and interesting. You can tell that he really cares about his students and wants to do what he can to help them succeed. Even in the upper level Linguistics classes, homework is pretty minimal and straight forward. As long as you skim the readings and understand the main idea, you'll get a good grade on tests and quizzes. I've gotten A's in all of his classes, but it didn't feel like I had to try too hard because I genuinely enjoyed learning from him. If you have the chance, definitely take a class with Dr. Butler!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3302 - I took Dr. Butler's Understanding English Grammar class this past semester. Grammar is by far one of my least favorite parts of any language; but Dr. Butler's class was one that I looked forward to every time I went to it. He is a phenomenal professor with an infectiously excited personality. He loves what he does, and that's evident from the first moment that you walk into the classroom. I wish Dr. Butler could teach all my classes. I got a B in this class, but it nothing to do with him. There is honestly not much homework, but half of it involves reading a (very dry and boring) textbook, which honestly I rarely read. So the B is my own fault and I accept it. But if I were to give Dr. Butler a grade? I would give him an A+. Take his class. He somehow makes even grammar fun. You will not regret it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3000 - I've had Dr Butler for 3 classes now and he's basically the greatest. Nicest guy, super helpful, great stories and examples to help you understand the concepts. He's always available to help his students, or even just to stop by his office for a chat. For most of his classes, there's not a lot of homework except the readings, which are important because that's a big chunk of the 4 "quizzes" (tests) that he gives throughout the semester. Also will likely be a research-type project, but its usually pretty low key, and in most of his classes (not 3310) he does take-home finals. Really, I cannot say enough good things about Butler. 12/10.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3310 - Great professor! He makes the material very easy to understand for people who aren't linguistics majors. The homework is fairly straightforward and the tests are just like the homework. Classes get out early and you usually on have a page to a page and half of notes. He's a super nice guy and always ready to help clarify something. Definitely a professor to take to if you get the opportunity!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Intro to Linguistics - He is an amazing Professor. I love Dr. Butler. He doesn't take himself too seriously, but he could. (He is that good) He is deeply entrenched in his subject matter and I fell very lucky to have had him. I am a non-traditional student and he was patient and helpful. It was the most personally impactful class that I have taken at Baylor. Thank you Dr. Butler for everything sir.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:LING 3310 - Dr. Butler just ACTS like a linguistics professor - he is particular in his word choice, appreciates plays on words, and behaves in a conservative-yet-endearing manner. His Intro to Linguistics course was not much more than interesting, however. With VERY little homework and straightforward concepts that were not expanded upon very much (granted, it IS an intro course), Dr. Butler was left with little to say and class periods that fell short of 50 minutes. He enjoys hosting students during his office hours and really cares about each of his students, making him a great person to know if you are considering anything in the field.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:All LING Courses - Dr. Butler is awesome!! Most of his classes promote thoughtful and interesting discussions which provide context to the lectures in class. He genuinely wants you to do well in his classes, you're missing out if you don't take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS 1399 - Dr. Butler is simply a wonderful professor! He is very interactive with all the students in the class and he always has a smile on his face. He makes class interesting every day and has a great sense of humor. He does have some bunny trails in his lectures depending on a student's response, but they end up being quite humorous! He manages to get everything taught that he plans on throughout the day, and he often let us out five minutes early, which doesn't seem like much, but it was useful to go grab a snack by the SUB before my next class since I didn't have any lunch break on Tuesdays. I took Dr. Butler for a freshman seminar, but if I can take him for a required English course, I will do it in a heartbeat! I even publically announced the first day of class that I was upset that I was placed in the FYS 1399 Linguistics seminar instead of the FYS Crossroads in Medicine that I had my eyes aimed on, but I am glad I was in this class and it really intrigued me in how language works in the human species and Dr. Butler really made it interesting. I don't care what class you are taking, take Dr. Butler!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS 1399 - I had Dr. Butler for Honors Freshman Seminar on How Language Works. It was a fun class. I learned a lot, though I didn't really realize I was learning... The readings and lectures are interesting if sometimes off-topic. Our class really bonded thanks to Dr. Butler. The compliment project was fun and the tests were fair. All in all little outside work was required. I wish it had been more challenging. This class got me interested in linguistics. Dr. Butler was helpful in meeting with me to inform me about the linguistics major. He is really nice too and will say hello whenever he sees you:).   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS 1399 - Dr. Butler is very approachable, very knowledgeable and quick to understand any frustrations one may have with the course or material. His teaching usually turns into a conversation, and everyone feels included. He is a strict grader, but keeping up with the reading will provide the student with everything he or she needs to know for exams. I look forward to taking more courses with Dr. Butler  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS 1399 - Pretty much, if you go to Baylor, you need to take this course! He was extremely interesting and taught a lot! He brought in speakers, analyzed movie dialogue, gave helpful handouts, and his tests were straight from the notes. For the paper, you analyze compliments, which is so much fun (I didn't think it was until I started doing it). I just didn't have time to read the books, so this is why I made a B. So, if you take good class notes and study the books that he assigns you, you WILL get an A in the class!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:FYS 1399 - I really enjoyed this class. The homework was only reading two chapters for each class, and for the most part it was fairly easy reading. There were no quizzes, just three tests and a short (3 page) paper. The tests were easy as long as you read and took notes in class, and they included matching, multiple choice, and short answer. It's true that sometimes the lectures were a little boring, but we watched several clips of tv shows and other fun things. You can tell Professor Butler really likes the subject, and he is extremely nice. I would recommend this course.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1399 - Take Dr. Butler's Linguistics FYS! He is the all-time nicest guy. His lectures sometimes tend to be boring, but once you read over your notes, they make a lot of sense. The material is easy and interesting. His tests are feasible, if you study and read or skim the chapters assigned, you'll do well. I highly recommend taking a class from this teacher.  - Grade In Class:A
