Comments:3301 - This is the most boring class I have ever taken in my life! But it's better then most Religion classes. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HEB 1301/2 - Dr. Nogalski is a great professor and a good man. He is very nice and down to earth unlike many professors in other departments. The first semester is very easy. 4 tests, a final, and vocab quizzes every Friday. The quizzes count as a test grade and they are very easy the first semester. The second semester is 3 tests, a final, and weekly quizzes. The quizzes cover up to 155 words the second semester so be prepared. The tests are much more difficult the second semester as well. The final is a 30 minutes of reading and translating verses in his office. The homework load can be pretty high the second semester depending on how much time you want to spend translating. Overall I would recommend taking his class because it is interesting leaning about the literal meanings of the verses in the Old Testament. If you are thinking about taking Latin instead, don't. Hebrew is a lot easier, and requires a lot less memorization. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Inter. the Old Testament - Dr. Nogalski is a genuinely good professor. I am only a religion minor, not a religion major, so this class was significantly difficult for me, but this is due to my lack of background in Old Testament. He is a really nice man, and he will do anything to help you succeed in this class. His midterm and final are both take-home essays, but do not think because they are take home that they are easy. Most of them total to be about 7-10 pages long and include very broad questions that require very good understanding of the subject material. His tests are very difficult, which can be expected from a high level religion course. There is also a 20 page exegesis paper to write in this class. It is also very difficult. The coursework in this class was sometimes overwhelming, but Dr. Nogalski is a very knowledgeable professor. I learned a lot from this class. If you would rather learn a lot about the subject material rather than get an easy A, take this class. This guy really knows his stuff. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Interpreting the Old Test - Dr. Nogalski is a very nice man who clearly loves what he teaches - but he is honestly one of the most boring lecturers on Earth. He speaks quietly, seems nervous about being in front of people, and stumbles a lot. There's a large amount of reading, weekly quizzes, and a huge exegesis paper. That being said, he does everything possible to make sure you do well on each assignment. Getting an A is possible if you read and manage to stay awake. . . but good luck on that. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Intro Hebrew I and II - I liked Dr. Nogalski's classes quite well. Although his lectures can be a little boring, once you get into translating scripture, he'll often go off on an entertaining tangent. The tests were always easier than you'd think they would be. I think he psyched us out so we would study and try harder. Hebrew is one of the few languages I've been taught (as opposed to learning it on my own)that I've been able to retain, understand and build upon. I attribute that to Dr. Nogalski. An A is not impossible, but is very hard to get. I got an A by the skin of my teeth and a good participation grade. Just do the assignments, participate in class and MAKE FLASHCARDS! Whenever you get into translating scripture, flashcards will make or break you. Make them daily so you don't have to pull all-nighters the week of the test. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Introductory Hebrew - Dr. Nogalski is a professor that really tries to help his students succeed in his classes. He gave reviews for each test, he spends a lot of time going over homework, and that does kind of get annoying bacause he tires to cram an entire lesson in 5 minutes. I think that Nogalski is a best teacher you could have for Hebrew. its a tough language and Nogalski really tries to make it easier. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Introductory Hebrew I - I heard that a lot of the people who took his Prophets class really didn't like him and his teaching method, although he's supposed to be one of the leading authorities on the prophets and Baylor is lucky to have him. That being said, I loved having him for Intro Hebrew I. He wasn't always available for help on the material (he would send you to his grad asst. Roy) but that's probably my only real negative criticism. The tests were fair and he gave a review before every one (which I really liked). Homework was usually 2 or 3 exercises out of the book and was pretty manageable. If you're going to take any Hebrew with Dr. Nogalski, just pay attention and make sure you don't get behind on the material because the lessons build on each other. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:3304 - Here's the deal: if you take Dr. Nogalski, prepare to sit in class bored to tears. He knows the material, but doesn't effectively present it. Doesn't seem very comfortable in front of the class (might be because it was his first semester at Baylor). He teaches everything from the ancient Hebrew perspective, without spending any time on the prophets' influence on the Christian faith. i.e. ignores any inclination that Isaiah's prophecies refer to Christ - a slight problem considering this is a Christian University. Regardless of the grade I got, I really wish I hadn't taken this class; I feel like I didn't really learn anything and wasted 3 hours of credit. - Grade In Class:A
