Comments:CSI 5342 - our sessions were basically her reading off the homeworks, and if you asked her anything in more detail of why her solutions were like that, she will say essentially "it is because my solution manual has it like this" or something similar. Also there are a lot of typos in her solutions and canvas. The worst part was her being expecting students to see key announcements at 9-10PM on how to do a homework properly the night it was due. You almost get punished for turning in homework early because of all the announcements she later posts and if you were not paying attention you could get punished for it. Though she does seem to not grade too hard (really depends on type of assignment), which I will give her and she does keep up with communication well.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Software 2 - The class might suck but she is a valid teacher and a really nice person. It won't be a hard class but if you make the most out of the group project you really end up learning a lot. It's all about applying yourself, don't expect her to force you to apply yourself because she won't.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CSI 3372 -

I have immense disdain for this class. Dr. Song's lectures are unhelpful and incredibly boring. She frequently assigns things due in less than 24 hours with no heads up. Lecture time is completely wasted, as she is perhaps the least succinct professor I have taken. Her class is mostly a repeat of Dr. Cerny's Software Engineering I and is entirely unneeded in the curriculum. The group project is the only helpful part of the class, but do not expect to learn how to do any of it from her.

Additionally, her grading on the group project and most canvas submissions feel generally random. She is consistently behind on grading items and typically will take until after the next related assignment to give you feedback.

Written Tests: just memorize the design studios and expect to do a slightly altered version of them on the test. She will take a few multiple-choice questions directly from the quizzes, and expect you to write a short essay about your work on the group project. Actual understanding of the content is not particularly necessary, just being able to reproduce these materials and memorization of what was covered on slides. The exams typically will not feel proportional to what you learned and you will probably encounter something random that makes you lose points.

Practicums: These will probably stress you for time, but she does let you submit late for slightly reduced points. They will probably make you use a database and JPA on top of setting up a simple Spring API, but do not expect her to teach you these whatsoever.

Group Project: This will take a lot of time, and you will have deliverables weekly (many of which are UML diagrams that relate very little to the work needed to be done for upcoming milestones). Don't expect to learn anything from her, and expect nothing to be graded until the very last day of the semester. If you try you will probably do well enough.

Comments:CSI 3372 - Most boring class I've taken at Baylor... it would be a great class, it's just wayyy to slow and the given information isn't helpful.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3373 - For myself or anyone else I talked to (including previous students) she would talk in lecture and we would hear words but understand nothing new. Sometimes diagrams would be up and those would make sense. The project (run through Credera) is nice but needs more support. The lectures would be better if they helped with the project. When asked questions on the assignments or in-class examples on arbitrary parts that could go one way or the other she doesn't answer the question and seems to just say it's wrong without actually explaining why.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CSI-3372 - This is by far the most useless class I have ever taken in Baylor computer science. All but three of the topic we covered had already been covered in depth in Software I. The software development methodology taught in this class is hopelessly antiquated. Our first midterm took a month to be graded and an assignment worth a significant portion of our grade in the class took two months. Her insults directed at Dr. Cerny are downright unprofessional.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3378 - Dr. Song is a very nice person but a truly awful teacher. She assigns insane amounts of homework and huge projects (2 of which were 10 page, single spaced essays). She really struggles to get ideas across to her class. She often blows through material, only occasionally stopping to see if we're understanding (which we usually are not) and then she keeps going. She is generally a decently fair grader and makes herself available when possible but this class was way harder then it should be.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3372 - Really, really awful lecturer. It was several weeks into the class before I felt like I had actually learned anything. There's no point in paying much attention in the class because she really isn't good at conveying her ideas. The project is a HUGE time suck and she is relentless about making things due for it. If you wanna do well, expect to spend an additional 5-10 hours a week on the project on top of the material for the class (the two have nothing to do with each other). She has also shown a lack of consideration for anything outside of class. We had three things due during spring break. I would say avoid taking her but it's unlikely you have a choice.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Software 2 - Oh my gosh this class is terrible. It’s not as bad as software 1 was with Cerny but it is still a not good time. The lecturing style is literally just reading slides to us all of class and the group project is a massive time commitment. It isn’t worth very much of your grade(25%) but takes a ton of work for the whole semester. There isn’t really a reason to go to class since she gives you the slides. The group project difficulty varies entirely on who your team mates are. If you get people who know what they are doing it will be an easy class. If you are unlucky it will be really bad. I was somewhere in between. You don’t really learn anything new from software 1 that isn’t programming related.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Software EGR 2 - This class just sucks. The lecture is extremely boring, and you really don't learn anything new that you didn't learn in SE1. Her teaching style is just going through a dry PowerPoint with very basic examples. The project can range from absolutely terrible to not too bad, it really depends on who you have in your group. Her grading system sucks too. She weights the project as 25% of your grade, yet expects you to put around ~15 hours a week into it, where she puts the 5 small homework assignments as 30% of your grade. However, she grades kinda fairly, and there's some extra credit in the class. Overall, I'd just describe this class as annoying. I really didn't learn anything valuable from it, but still had to put a lot of effort in the class. I honestly would take any other professor in the department over Song.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3371 - Great person, Ok teacher. The class is pretty ok until you reach the final project. If you're thinking about buying books, don't. All of the books are given electronically for free by her on the first day. About the class, everything is ok until the final project when you have to apply what you've learned on a real (but very simple) program. The stuff you learn is useful, but it's made for developing large projects, not the small one you make, which can mean that the project feels very tedious. For best results, I'd recommend (during the first week that it's assigned) trying to make a rough code version of the project. In theory this is the last thing that you do, but what ends up happening is that when you eventually change your models into code (after you have 30 pages of models), you'll find things that don't work and have to go through all of your old models to update them. With code in mind from the beginning, you'll have a better time designing and spend less time updating.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3372 - I always hated ratings that start with "well, she is a nice person...", but Dr. Song is a nice person. Software II sucks, but that's because the project should be it's own separate three hour class. The entire course is a joke to some degree, as no one knows whats going on and everyone just works on sudoku puzzles. To give her credit, she does care (unlike Grabow) and she's a nice person (unlike Grabow) - so you won't hate her class, you just won't like it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3371 - SHORT: Dr. Song is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had, including pre-college teachers. She cannot explain material and does not grade fairly. Honestly, if a teacher cannot do either of these things well, what is the point. Take anyone else. LONG: I think that Dr. Song is a majorly ineffective teacher. Possibly her only strong points are that she really enjoys the subject she teaches and seems to understand it very well herself. Other than that, I feel that I learned nothing from her. I could not pay attention to her during her lectures because there was nothing she said that actually helped explain content. Most of the time she merely read content from her slides and perhaps drew a diagram similar to what was on the slide. Eventually I started reading through the powerpoints on my own to get the knowledge I needed, as well as seeking out resources published by other universities that deals with the same content as the material she teaches. This in itself would not be such an issue if Dr. Song were a fair grader of materials. I have had to teach myself course content in the past when I have run into awful teachers, but at least they would give me a fair grade. When I look at the assignments and tests that I turned into Dr. Song after receiving them back, graded, I often find myself wondering just what I got points taken off from. It seems that she has some standard whereby she grades material, and this standard is a mystery to students, for she cannot explain what she wants or expects from them. I do not feel like I understand what she is asking most of the time, and must ask her further questions about what she expects. This is extremely frustrating as even though I am trying to understand the course, I do not feel like I am being fairly graded. --Ben P. Comments:3372 - Dr. Song is not as bad as these ratings make you think. He's also not incredible. She can't explain things very well, but her class isn't very hard. All it really is is a large final project with very little work beforehand.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3372 - Professor Song is a better professor than these ratings would have you believe. I never had her for 2350, but the material in that class was difficult regardless. Taking a class closer to her field of research would probably lead to better reviews. Professor Song cares about her students learning the material and is very flexible when it comes to helping them out. Also, she remodels parts of the class based on input from evaluations (not just the final one), which is something you don't normally see in the computer science department; I found it very refreshing. Quizzes are assigned on blackboard for each section of reading. Be sure to take and study them. If you miss one, talk to her about it; she'll likely give you a re-take, just don't make a habit of it. The tests are not all that hard, if you study the powerpoints and the quizzes. She can be picky on how she wants the software engineering assignments (diagrams, etc), but I never felt that it was anything other than sticking to Unified Process specifications. I think she's recieved an unfair reputation on here. Plus, her English has gotten a lot better.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CSI 2350 - Song was a terrible teacher. The course material in actually pretty easy, but Song makes it difficult. Her accent is a big problem, and she would periodically confuse the students and herself while trying to teach relatively easy topics. The tests are not particularly hard, but the homework and quizzes make it difficult to maintain a good grade in this class. If you can, take it with a different professor.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-07-05

Comments:2350 - Undoubtedly the WORST professor I've ever had. Couldn't understand what she said, she actually made some rather racist comments, and I'd rather not have any of my professors tell me that her college was better in her home country of Korea. Reads from PPTs, and doesn't know her stuff AT ALL. The material was actually pretty easy too, she just can't teach worth anything.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2008-12-04

Comments:2350 - Do not take this teacher. She doesn't speak english, she doesn't speak up, and she doesn't know the material. She is bar none the worst professor in comp sci. I would rather drop my major than take another class with her. She pushed all her teaching off on her TA, who was forced to teach it to us after class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2008-12-04

Comments:2350 - This class started out very badly. She is incredibly hard to understand so following the lectures is very difficult. She talks and mutters things under her breath when she gets to teaching fast. I had planned to drop the class but she convinced me to stay in and I busted by a** and she still gave me an F. Do not take her.  - Grade In Class:F

Date: 2008-03-31

Comments:2350 - Not only is this class a complete waste of time, but she cannot teach. She is hard for many students to understand because of her accent, and she doesn't talk very loud. Her lectures are not informative and often confuse students more. You are better off just doing the homeworks (using the internet) and learning that way. You should read the book before every test too, but much of the class will still do very poorly. Be sure to do your homeworks and get good grades as this will help make up for a poor test grade  - Grade In Class:B
