Comments:2310 - Advantages: 1. cultural readings that are actually interesting, like mysteries and not boring topics (he picks his own readings, we only did 2 from the textbook) 2. Straightforward exams and quizzes. No tricks, no gimmicks. You know what’s going to be on them. 3. Straightforward grading scale. A second-grader can understand his system. Just add up your points and aim for 900 for an A-, 930 for an A (not saying it’s easy to get that, just saying you know how far away you are and how many you need on your final). 4. Short film clips before each test. We watch them and talk about them, then he asks us basically to sum up (in French) what the film’s main plot is on a writing section (usually like 6 sentences) on the test. 5. Sense of humor. Honestly, Dr. Boerm had me cracking up sometimes with his wry comments and very dry sense of humor. True, not everyone gets it, but if you like sassiness and sarcasm, he’s funny. Disadvantages: He’s not teaching the next level class next semester. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:FRE 2310 - I have no idea where the reviews below me are coming from. I can't even begin to explain how terrible Dr. Boerm is. Let me tell you I've been taking french since high school and took french 1 and 2 here at baylor with someone other than Boerm. I've never gotten below a B+ in french before. Then I get to Boerm's class knowing he isn't the best prof, but I thought he was better than my other options. BOY WAS I WRONG. First of all, he completely egotistical and self centered. He literally referred to himself as the "messiah of french." If that isn't enough reason to run in the other direction, he spends so much time telling stories about how great of a french speaker and linguist he is. Second, he clearly has favorites in the class. Those who are really good at french and catch on quickly he has a clear favoritism for. The rest of us that struggle (like 90%), he seems to have little interest in and almost annoyed with. Thirdly, on the first test only 4 people scored above an 80 (I got a C) and he told us we need to change out studying strategies. Because clearly he wasn't the problem. Then after the second test, the score were the same (I actually dropped to a solid D+) and it was, again according to him, out fault the scores were so low. Also, he give like no direction on what the test or quizzes will be like, so you go into them not knowing how they're structured. Fourthly, when I approached him about my grades and how I can improve them, he gave me a smart little remark of "try harder." I dropped the class after that. I can honestly think of so many more reasons not to take him but then this rating would be insanely long. If you're a french major or like french then take him I guess, you'll probably be great pals. But if not, literally TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM. Save yourself (and GPA) while you can. - Grade In Class:DROP |

Comments:1401/1402 - There seems to be an odd melange of reviews here. So, i'm going to try and set the record straight.
This man is a "Boerm of all trades," he truly teaches across the curriculum. Yes he focuses on the oh-so-important French grammar (overtly so if I may add), but he gives such a great anecdotes that tie into the uniquely bizarre French culture. Other professors in the department tend to revolve their course around France alone. This is not Dr. Boerm. He brings to light the insignificant French speaking tribe in meso-Saharan Africa (i'm joking). His class is not boring. I never had the urge to take out my iPhone and text, check my e-mail, or Facebook account. He engages every student with a "down-the-line" method. He points, and you respond. It's simple, quick, and ingenious.
Overall... I learned a great deal, I did not hate my professor, and I came back for more. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:1402 - Dr. Boerm is probably the hardest teacher in French, but honestly the best. I have a horrible memory, and speaking in a foreign language just isnt my thing, so a C was good for me, but he made me think and learn and actually be excited about french more than my teacher last semester. His quizzes are hard, but not if you study every single night. Homework is do-able, and his tests are good. I like that he has a speaking part of the test, you go in the hall and answer questions, and then the rest is written. He is also veryyy good about offering extra credit. If you are up for a challenge to learn a language and challenge your testing skills and knowledge, take him...if youre like me, and just need to fulfill your major requirements, he might be tough. He is a nice guy, but he definitely picks out his favorites. - Grade In Class:C |
