Comments:1302 - To echo many of the other ratings, Dr. Harris is one of the best professors that Baylor has to offer. Immediately when stepping into her classroom, you are able to not only feel, but see her passion for teaching the Russian language and culture. Coming from a STEM background, I am very used to professors who do not even know my name, but Dr. Harris makes a genuine effort to get to know each and every student individually. She often personalizes lessons to student interests and will even tailor one-on-one discussions towards you personally. She makes herself available outside of class to help with the material, homework and even discuss things completely unrelated to Russian. I highly encourage you attend her office hours and get to know her. She is also VERY responsive on e-mail. While the homework initially may seem overwhelming, she prepares you so well to do it that it does not take much time at all. I can say with total confidence that Dr. Harris is a professor that genuinely wants every single student in her class to succeed. Ignore the bad reviews, Dr. Harris is one of the nicest and most caring people I have ever met. Take Russian. Take Dr. Harris. You will not regret it. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:RUS 1301 - what a great professor. she is so helpful and tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to succeed. it sucks that she isnt teaching RUS 1302, but it is what it is. Its a lot of work in terms of HW, but its completion. Tests and quizzes are super fair. She doesnt trick you. I have a belief that school is teacher AND student vs subject, not Teacher and subject vs student. and she very well is on our side. take her if you have the chance. good luck - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4301 - My favorite teacher i've ever taken by far. She is a great teacher, and you can see her passion for what she teaches. She has lots of availability, even if it only over email. She is very helpful as well! Ask her almost any question and she will give you an answer. Once I asked a question about Russian hockey, unrelated to the class, and she actually found a very interesting article on that subject for me outside of class and gave it to me! Thats how much she goes above and beyond to help students. The only "negative" thing I can say is be prepared to work, but this is not specific to her class, just about Russian in general. If you're learning the language, it will take a lot of work and the higher level classes you will have to really work on your russian and be prepared to read a lot. However, this workload really will be a non-issue. Much of her activities are for completion, so if you show up having done what she asked, even if you are confused or not sure if you did it right, you will come out with full credit. You will also likely have a lot of quizzes, but they are nothing tricky. Just study the words before hand, and you should have no problem gettings As or Bs on all of them. Overall, definitely an amazing teacher and someone who I would recommend to everyone. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:RUS 1402 - Ignore the crazy-bad reviews on here, Dr Harris is amazing. I've taken a lot of languages at Baylor, and she is by far the most helpful and clearest of all the professors I've had. Russian can be a difficult language if you're not familiar with certain gramatical structures, but she takes the time to explain them clearly and go over them very thouroughly in class. The tests were almost exactly like the homework (even easier maybe). The only slightly difficult part of the class are the vocab quizzes, which you take before going over the chapter really in-depth, so you have to memorize the words ahead of time. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1412 - Dr. Harris is incredibly organized and gets your homework back to you the next day, or if you're taking a test, before class is over! She gives lots of handouts with explanations and study strategies, as well as a study guide for each chapter. So far as the final is concerned, her review is so thorough that you'll know exactly what you need to study for. That being said, you need to be learning all along, because it is truly comprehensive! She definitely takes the "Russian classroom environment" thing seriously. She rules the class with proper Russian severity. ;P But seriously, you do need to pay attention. She doesn't hesitate to publicly chide someone who zones out and did not hear her question. Slacking off is unacceptable. So, you do need to TRY to learn Russian. Her class is easy enough to make an A just if you do the homework and study maybe 1hr for tests. (Lots of extra credit. I studied like I prescribed above and got 104%. Seriously.) So it really frustrates her when students don't even do that minimum. She'll announce that she's "disappointed" if a significant number of people fail the test. But it's true, there's no need to fail her tests! If you find yourself falling behind, She's incredibly available, showering you with resources and tips. In summary, Dr. Harris really wants her students to learn Russian, and learn it well. She's invested in her students, and tries to get to know them. She'll even help you find intensive summer programs or study abroad. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Dr. Harris is a very good professor. If you do your homework, which you should because it's completion grade, the tests are a breeze! She was also very available and provided her cell in case someone needed to call or text her. I would take her again!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Wow, I am absolutely appalled by the review below. I would never use the word devil and Dr. Harris in the same sentence. She is too nice! Everytime I went to her for help she welcomed me with open arms. Her lessons were entertaining and tests were easy if you had done the homework. I had Hruska last semester and believe you can't go wrong with either of them :) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - The only reason I remember the word for Devil in Russian is because I used it to describe this woman. Dr. Harris is not a good teacher and made learning Russian not only difficult, but also remarkably unenjoyable. I would suggest either taking any other professor in the Russian department, or just taking another language altogether because her class is that terrible. She was not willing to help students who were struggling, and when it was obvious that students didn't understand her (because she spent the entire time speaking in Russian we hadn't learned yet), she got mad at us and called us lazy. Do not take her. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:RUS 1402 - First of all, let me make it perfectly clear that the Russian department here is generally amazing. No matter who you take for any Russian course, you really can't go wrong. This is especially the case with Dr. Harris. She's helpful both in and out of class, and as stated in another review, she's very hospitable. For example, she often brought baked goods and candy to class, and at the end of the semester, she invited us over to a party at her house. If you had Hruska for 1401, take Harris for 1402. It's the perfect combo if you want to seriously learn Russian. Overall, the decision to take Russian for my foreign language requirement is one of the best decisions I've made as an undergraduate, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:RUS 1401 - First off the Russian department here at Baylor is AMAZING! Dr. Harris is fantastic!! She inspired me to learn more about Russian. She is very helpful during office hours and very hospitable. She even invited students for a Russian dinner at her place!! Take Dr. Harris, она очень хороший профессор!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Dr. Harris is literally the worst professor I've had at Baylor. She isn't willing to explain work to students and her class is absolutely terrible. Her tests are not a good measure of what she teaches, and her class was the worst class I've had at Baylor. Take literally any other professor, and if she's the only option then switch to another foreign language. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1402 - Excellent professor, EXTREMELY helpful. There was some work, but it wasn't overwhelming and it helped me learn the material. She is very welcoming and practically treats you as her own. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - THIS TEACHER IS THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD. DON'T LISTEN TO BAD REVIEWS! She even invites her students to her house at the end of the year to eat Russian food. This teacher is unfathomable, and not to mention a fabulous cook. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Literally the WORST professor I've ever had at Baylor. She was incredibly unhelpful and would lecture students when they didn't understand her teaching style. She was unwilling to work with students and refused to reiterate information students didn't understand. DO NOT TAKE RUSSIAN WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Excellent professor!! I can't even BEGIN to describe how remarkable Dr. Harris was. This was definitely my favorite class of the semester. I was greatly impressed with her. She is very organized and is always willing to help her students. She does not waste anytime and will occasionally show a Russian music video to underline some of the concepts. Dr. Harris made second semester a breeze!! Also, she is very personable outside of class! She provides her students with her phone number to text questions and will print anything out you may find interesting about Russia. At the end of the year, she invited her class over for Russian food and we participated in several Russian festivities! TAKE HER FOR RUSSIAN!!!!!!!! If you loved Prof. Hruska then you'll love Dr. Harris too. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Absolutely love this woman. She is so caring and understanding. She assigns homework everyday, which gets annoying to some people, but it totally helps you do better on the exams and vocabulary quizzes. I took her for 1401, also, and can't wait to have her again! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - Dr. Harris is an awesome teacher! She really tries to get to know her students personally, and is always available by e-mail or text to answer any questions or help her students. She grades very fairly and offers a lot of extra credit. The tests are pretty easy and so are the vocab quizzes. She assigns homework every day which can get kind of annoying at times, but it really helps you understand the material better. I never made below an A on any assignment! Definitely recommend her. Take her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - This is a difficult class. Dr. Harris assigns several pages of homework every night, and we have to learn a lot of vocabulary in a very short amount of time. However, she is extremely accommodating when you ask for help and she genuinely wants you to learn Russian. She is very nice if you show interest in Russian and complete the homework. The textbook is absolutely necessary. Though Russian is a difficult language, if you do the homework and study for quizzes and tests, you can get an A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:RUS 1402 - She's pretty helpful as long as you do your work. The tests and quizzes are easy if you study, but be prepared to do homework everyday of the week (including memorizing 60-70 vocab words). Honestly its not harder than the other language courses, so as long as you put forth effort you should do fine. She's a really nice person, just assigns a bunch of work. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:beginning - this woman is wonderful! she will help you and make herself available as much as possible. you will love this class!!! if you ever have a problem do NOT be afraid to talk to her! she will find a way to explain anything in a way you can understand. great great great professor!!!! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:RUS 1402 - She is awesome teacher. She really knows what she is teaching. She knows how to teach the fundamentals of a language to make it understandable and challenging. Most language teachers do not know how much English compared to the foreign language they are teaching to incorporate in the class. The tests were a great measurement of student's knowledge and she assigned homework that was really helpful. I wish there were teachers like her in every department. Take her if you get the chance. - Grade In Class:A
