Comments:1420 - Mr. Hall is retiring so rest in peace to all the poor souls that have to take physics 1 without him teaching.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-05-09

Comments:1420 & 2301 - Professor Hall was my favorite prof this year because he is a great teacher, makes class somewhat entertaining, and really helped his students manage exams. He is an extremely skilled teacher that knows what he is talking about, especially for physics. However, most kids had to teach themselves everything on the homework (which is not easily doable for Physics 1 unless you look every question up). His physics tests were take home which was great because it gave you a chance to test your knowledge, then really learn what you are being tested on, as well as the chance to get a good grade. I highly recommend Randy Hall for Calc 1 and Physics 1.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1407 - prof hall is generally a pretty good teacher. his lectures can be fairly boring but as long as you can do the homework and the example exam questions, you should be able to do well on the tests. there’s not much homework and it’s all due the day of the test so that’s nice. overall i’d recommended mr. hall, just be ready to take time outside of class to learn the concepts  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PHY 1409 - Randy Hall has proven to be inconsiderate. During the COVID-19 pandemic it is my belief that professors should be kind and reasonable. After I shared with him that I did not receive an initial email concerning the make-up lab registration only minutes after it closed he would not allow me to register. The makeup lab was not even mentioned in my in-person lab session so you would think that he would be reasonable in allowing me to register. I suggest taking professors that have proven to be considerate beings and he has proven not to be in the midst of a pandemic.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PHY 1420 - RANDYYY!! what a guy. He's a funny prof and lets you know on the first day that he is not Dr. Hall, but Mr. Hall. As far as physics profs go, he is for sure the safe bet; none of the physics profs at baylor are necessarily good, but he is the lesser evil. He makes the problems somewhat entertaining and the class is somewhat lively. Choose good ole Randy. He's great.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1420 - All the profs in physics department aren't great by any means. Be able to learn the material on your own and perform well on the tests (if you take 1420, the tests are the same for everyone). However Hall's syllabus is better than most so that helps.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1420 - Randy Hall is definitely the safe pick. Really funny and made class pretty interesting. If you're not a physics or engineering major is understands you don't necessarily need this you're just trying to pass the class. He gives a pretty hefty curve because raw class averages are in the 50-60 range. Better hope you sit next to someone who has taken physics before or hope you have because the material flies by and there is a ton of material on each test. Apparently he writes most of the physics tests so he teaches well into it, while students from the other teacher had no idea what was going on. Loved this guy, but physics is really Hard and Time Consuming. ASK QUESTIONS, he is super helpful and knows all the little tips and tricks.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:MTH 1320 and 1321 - Mr. Hall is listed as a physics teacher because that is his primary teaching field, however he also teaches precalculus and calculus. I took him for both classes. I really appreciate Mr. Hall because he cuts the BS and tells you what you really need to know. Every class period before the test he will physically go through each problem on the test and tell you what kind of problem it is and what you are expected to know so that you don't have to study any unnecessary material. He is very kind and humorous and wants you to do well and to succeed.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1420 - 1420 is an extremely rigorous and challenging course. I spent many hours each week doing the homework and prepping for exams. Professor Hall is not a fantastic professor in terms of teaching ability, but he is very helpful and willing to meet with you almost anytime during the week (he is semi-retired). The tests are departmental, so each professor will have the same tests but different curves. My understanding is that Hall curves on a bell curve. These tests are tough, but not impossible (master the practice tests to best prepare). The hardest part of the class is Hall's final. Though the problems are not too bad, there are about 20 problems required to be done in a time frame of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The regular exams are given with a 3.5 hour time limit (with about 10 problems), so the pacing is something to practice for the final. Overall, Hall is not a great teacher and the course is challenging, but he is probably the best option for 1420.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Physics 1420 - Mr. Hall is a great teacher. He is active in his lectures, enjoys teaching, and is willing to help students. I have no complaints. Readers may wonder why I received a D in his class - I was not exactly a perfect student in my first semester, so do not let that reflect on his teaching ability. The workload is not intense - Homework is due the day of the test, so if you spread out your time doing it, you will have no difficulties in the class with homework. If you study, you will do well on tests. The tests are curved. Do not be like me and skip a test. The tests have no multiple choice though. I truly loved his class. I was disappointed to see that he would not be teaching a Physics 1420 class available during a time I could retake it. Mr. Hall is the professor who one wants to learn from.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1407 - Hard class, but tests are identical from semester to semester. He's not a great teacher and isn't very helpful, nor is he very nice, but I got an A thanks to some other students. Wouldn't really recommend if you actually want to learn physics.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1420 - His lectures were mediocre because he mostly just worked problems that could have been explained just as well reading the book. He didn't really teach you, but more gave you information to teach yourself. For the exams, I mostly worked the mastering and studied the book. I did well on the exams (90 average), but his final completely blind-sided me and was unfair. I understood all the material completely, but decided to give us 22 questions to answer in 2 hours. The regular exams gave us 10 questions to finish in a maximum time of 3.5 hours. I don't understand why he expected us to complete more than double the amount of problems in a much shorter window. I walked into the final with an A, after preparing for three days straight on physics alone, I felt confident I could keep my A. Sadly, his unfair final I received a 68 despite being able to complete all the mastering without help, and correcting all my mistakes on the other exams.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1407 - Mr. Hall is fairly bland. he just kinda lectures in a monotone voice but then will whip out the occasional singing of certain frequencies unreasonably loud! but he\'s a nice guy with great intentions and knowledge, there no homework except before the test, and labs are easy!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2016-04-08

Comments:PHY 1407 - I had never taken physics before this class - and it wasn't a hard class necessarily, just frustrating. Mr. Hall is as sweet as can be, but he isn't a math teacher, and this class felt more like a math class than anything. Don't expect him to explain every step of a problem, and be prepared for some random multiple choice questions on his exams. We had 4 tests and a cumulative final, along with homework due before every test. The lab was equally frustrating, but doesn't effect your grade in the class as much as you'd think. The good news is his grading scale is super relaxed - no A-'s and he curves all of the exams!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-06-03

Comments:PHY 1420 - Mr. Hall is an incredible teacher. He is very clear but you will need to pay attention or you will miss things. The homework is painful and time-consuming to say the least. It is through Mastering Physics. Fortunately Mr. Hall hates it as much as his students do so he is willing to give you some extra points for when the automatic grading system messes up. The tests were quite long but they were given in the evening with a 3.5 hour time limit and a formula sheet. I never had to do any study other than the homework and the practice tests he posted.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Phy 1407 - This man is just a sweetheart. You can't tell at first but he is such a nice guy! His tests are exactly what he teaches in class so write everything down and pay attention. I only used my textbook for the practice problems he assigns which only counts for completion! He also drops the last test. You should be able to get an A in this class without pulling your hair out.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2014-11-10

Comments:PHY 1407 - Mr. Hall was a very good teacher. His class was a little unstructured but I walked away with an A! Just pay attention and write stuff down. His test are over exactly what he talked about in class! The lab was super easy! I never full worked the practice problems (just count as completion) and I did fine on the test and I am not good at science.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-06-24

Comments:PHY 1420 - Explains things very well and willing to help if you don't understand. Not just smart, but actually good at teaching.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2013-04-17

Comments:1420 - Mr. Hall is one of the best professors here at Baylor if you are willing to learn the subject with some diligence. You'll need to pay attention to his lectures and look at the book even though he doesn't mention it much. He's a great person who really wants to help his students as much as he can. He knows that there are more than plenty of non-Physics majors and he caters his class to adjust to that. The Mastering Physics is stupid but at the end of the semester he gives you credit for the problems you lost to the computer system being stupid. Also, the tests are not horrible. They're not easy but you have to know the stuff pretty good. Do the practice tests that he posts on blackboard. They were a really big help.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2012-05-14

Comments:1420 Calculus Physics 1 - very good at teaching, homework is all due at end of the semester but don't wait to do it all last minute, the homework really helps for the tests there's four of them and the lowest gets dropped and made into bonus points somehow, lab is a multiplier make sure you get above a 85 in lab so your lecture grade will scale up, tutorial is somewhat a joke its not timed correctly so you'll take about something in tutorial that you haven't covered in class occasionally but by in far if you need to take calculus physics 1 or want to hall is your best choice. tests are free response problems like ap physics from high school 8 to 12 problems per test with an adjusted bell curve. take hall  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-11-17

Comments:1409 - He is very enthusiastic and very very smart! He respects his students and willing to help! His lectures are interesting and easy to listen to, and if you pay attention to his lectures and do the Wileyplus homework, you'll do fine on his tests. All of his tests are curved! I highly recommend Hall!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-10-18

Comments:1405 - I had never taken any kind of Physics class before taking Mr. Hall. I hardly studied for his tests and still managed to pull a pretty good grade. He assigns homework but it isn't due until the day of each exam. His tests aren't too bad, sometimes he has random multiple choice questions that will surprise you, but he usually curves them. He's extremely smart but wont talk down to you if you ask a simple question which is what I love about him! Take this class!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-07-06

Comments:1408 - Mr. Hall is an awesome teacher. He is great at explaining the concepts. His exams have changed drastically from his past exams. He used to have really easy exams, but they made him change up his exams because his class average was too high. The first two exams were pretty challenging. The second one was the hardest and our class average was a 58. The third and fourth exams are easier than the first two. The last (4th) exam was the easiest so take it! You get to drop one exam. The final was not too bad. He is very helpful during office hours and you should get your exams corrected so you can study them for the final. Wileyplus and labs are a pain, but do well because they can help your grade. I highly recommend taking Mr. Hall. He's pretty funny too!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-05-10

Comments:1408 and 1409 - Mr. Hall is by far the best physics professor for people who struggle with or just plain hate physics. He makes the material as easy to understand as it can get and he's genuinely interested in helping you get through the class. He's clearly passionate about the material and never ever bores you with powerpoints. He drops a test and uses it for extra credit on the final. Hands down best physics prof.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-05-04

Comments:1408 - Hall knows that 95% of us ARE NOT physics majors, and makes his class accordingly. His lectures are about as exciting as any physics lecture could be, certainly tolerable. You use something similar to MasteringPhysics called WileyPlus, which is just problems straight out of the book w/ different numbers (meaning you can find them on cramster!). Tests can be pretty intense, and he gives the same test for his MWF as TR, so if you can get him TR. His office hours are somewhat limited, though if you come during them, he WILL be there, and feel free to make an appointment. He'll never make you feel stupid and will help you with any question. If you have to take physics, he's the guy IMO.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-01-18

Comments:1402 - For the subject being physics, expect the lectures to be a little boring. But Hall does a great job of lecturing, nonetheless. He's got some funny stories now and then, plus he truly tries to help you understand it. The online homework is cake, and the due dates don't really matter. He gives you credit for your problems even if you get it wrong on the exam. You can drop your lowest exam grade and have it added as a few bonus points to the final. The thing that makes him the best is that he gets that we're not all physics majors! He embodies that belief, and does a good job of taking care of you. A very likable person. I know that if I cared to study, I would have gotten an A just fine. But you MUST study for the exams and know how to answer the questions. I recommend actually doing the homework before the exams.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1408/1409 - I took Professor Hall for both Algebra based Physics and he was awesome. The homework could get overwhelming at some points but if you do it when assignmed there should be no problem in keeping up with it. He was always willing to answer questions before class. Yes, he could go too fast at times, but he always stopped to clarify topics if anybody asked. I would strongly recommend taking him. He's an excellent professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PHY 1408/1409 - Professor Hall is a really great teacher. I took him in Spring 09 for Physics 1408. His homework was really easy and the test were moderately hard. I was able to get an A due the final. Spring 10, i took physics 1409 which is much easier compared to physics 1408. However, homework is now done through wileyplus (which is a pain in the butt). Be careful though because the only issue I had with him was when he graded conceptual problems on tests. Some people may have the exact same answers, but not everyone gets fully credit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:MTH 1321 - Randy Hall is a very intelligent professor. The class consisted of him coming in, saying "Good morning", tossing with supreme uncare a calculus book onto the desk in front of him, and writing on the board. He obviously knows what he is talking about: he concocts problems out of his head and solves them quickly. He always relates Calculus to Physics (Well he is a Physics Professor after all...) and provides good examples...most of the time. No quizzes, just homework. And boy, what homework. He gives you all the assigned problems immediately. Each are due on test days, so you have plenty of time to work on them. And they are graded on a Did the student do the work?/ Did the student slap something down? basis. His tests are interesting. No curves, four of them, you do not have to take one of them. If you take all, you get +5 points of the final (TAKE ALL OF THEM! THE FINAL IS A BEAST!). His tests consist of (normally) a majority of utterly easy problems, and then one impossible problem that one can only get if they are a math genius or by means of magical interpretation. He has a loud voice so avoid sitting in the front like I did or your ears will be ringing for the rest of the day. Overall, a very excellent professor worthy of praise. My only complaint would be the last section we did. He suddenly sped up and left most of the students in the dark about how to do intergrals. But other than that he explains material rather thoroughly. You can ask questions about the homework for the first ten minutes of any class (except test days) and I love it when one asks him a particular nasty problem. He looks at it, makes a disguisted noise, and says "Now how are we going to solve this awful thing?"  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Hall is a great teacher. He is so nice and explains things so the students can understand. Make sure to not fall behind on the homework or it will be your downfall!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-05-10

Comments:1420 - he's really nice, but as he combined test with Honors class, it makes everything so hard really hard, yea he curves it, bt you feel miserable when doing test. And he never explains things clearly.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-05-06

Comments:1420 - Lots of mastering physics. VERY hard tests but he curves a lot. I also worked my butt off to get a C in calc based physics. If you're in non-cal based, don't worry I know some people that are dumb as bricks are passing his class. With that being said, if you're taking calc based (like I did) then prepare to spend hours upon hours of studying for each test. I probably spent around a total of 100 hours studying for all the tests and the final. Sounds fun, huh? Anyways, he's really funny and will answer any questions you have with clarity. He's a great professor but just gives too hard of test. I recommend him.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1409 - STAY AWAY this is the hardest class i have ever taken. im working my ass off and im going to get a c for the semester. I know some pretty stupid people who had schaub and they are at least getting a B+. Everyone says the class is easy take hall but its not, its really hard take someone else  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1420 - Dr. Hall is awesome! He has very reasonable expectations for the course and understands that 95% of us aren't physics majors. Also, you have to hit 20 chapters in one semester, so he does a good job of hitting the high points and focusing on the important stuff instead of going into trivial, randomly difficult problems. If you understand the basic concepts and know how the formulas work, you'll be fine. The lab is lengthy (but could be a lot worse and is only 10% of your grade) and no one likes the tutorials (5% of grade), but the course is a lot better if you take it with Hall, I guarantee it. There are 4 tests worth 50% of your grade, and the final is worth 25%, but there's tons of extra credit on it (my friend and I both made over a 100). He does assign the dreaded MasteringPhysics, but in doing that you will find yourself more than prepared for his tests. Great course, great prof!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1409 - Professor Hall is a great teacher. His exams are straight-forward. He always explained what would be on the exams the class before. He is a really nice guy and is always willing to help.   - Grade In Class:A
