Comments:1300 - Dr. Demesa was one of my favorite professors I have taken thus far at Baylor. Her teaching style is amazing and very easy to follow. She also provides so many extra ways to practice the material she is teaching. Every practice she assigns is optional -- so you don't have to do any outside work if you so choose; however, I would highly recommend doing all of the extra work she assigns because she uses it as extra credit and you are almost guaranteed to get a High A on her tests. Her tests are very easy and straight forward if you do the things she asks of you. I HIGHLY recommend taking her class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. DeMesa was such an amazing professor she does really well with making sure her students understand the content. She wants all her students to succeed so she does so well with working with students if you ask for it. As well as, she gives so many opportunities for you to do well. If you do all the OWLv2 and the Exam Replacements there is no chance you will not pass this class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - TAKE HER!! She was the most excellent professor I had! She gives you so many opportunities to get extra credit and replace grades. Her exams were straightforward, and she was always available to talk. She does say the first exam is the hardest, and SHE IS RIGHT! The first exam is difficult, but don't get desugared I promise it get easier!! I love how she taught and she is overall an amazing person!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 1302 - I took this class over the summer and it was the hardest-won A I've ever gotten, but a lot of that is because of the short time span in which it happens. I respect Dr. DeMesa so much because of the time she will take with each student to review exams, as well as the homework she prescribes. Some people complain about OWL homework but it was the best thing because it forced you to practice and provided extra points which really made a difference in the end. This homework, along with the fact that she will meet with you to MAYBE give points back on exams (she is pretty picky) is why I got an A. Also as a person, she is so kind, always brought a positive attitude to class, and really tried to maximize the time we spent in lecture. TAKE HER!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - This class requires a lot of studying and work but I will say, it is very easy to be successful in this class. Her tests are pretty straightforward when it comes to preparing. There is a decent amount of homework but it is pretty easy if you pay attention in class. One thing I will warn you about is that the lab for this class is awful!! The TA's are rude and condescending but either than the lab this class was great!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - I love Dr. Demesa! I retook her for CHE 1302, and it was 100% the right decision. I did take this over the summer, so it was a lot of work in a short amount of time. However, she is a straightforward professor who truly wants you to do well. I have never had a chem teacher offer so much extra credit. She is very kind, yet stern and respectable. She offers an exam replacement on OWL which consists of mastery assignments that will actually give you a 100 on your lowest exam grade. This literally increased my grade 10 points! Since this was a summer class, we didn't have an SI, so if you happen to take her over a summer/wintermester do the "drills" in class, do the practice tests (which are usually harder than her exams), PRACTICE the math problems (Chem 2 can be very challenging with how much math there is) and meet with her in office hours if you need help.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 1405 - I'll preface this by saying I had to take this class for my environmental studies major, and I was not looking forward to it, but this class was not as painful as I thought it would be. Dr. Demesa clearly loves chemistry a lot, and she does a good job of recognizing that we are not chemistry majors, so her lectures are tailored to application rather than abstract scientific concepts. If you are an environmental science/studies major, there is a lot of overlap with this class and other environmental science classes, even if this class is focused on the chemistry specifically. For example, we talked climate change, fossil fuel combustion, air pollution, ocean acification, etc. I will say, though, Dr. Demesa holds your hand very tightly through all of the math, to the point I was almost bored to tears with how slowly we were moving, which I find is not common at all in other science classes. The grade is made up of a bunch of small assignments, but the lab is the largest percentage (20%). There are four exams worth 15% each, weekly quizzes worth 10%, a presentation worth 5%, attendance worth 4%, and evaluations worth 1%. Additionally, there was up to 5% extra credit on each test by completing a practice test, which I highly recommend doing because it helps you study for the exam. Exams were all multiple choice, true/false, and open ended math questions. For each exam, you could use a note sheet with whatever you want, but I found that because she allowed the note sheet, she sometimes asked very specific questions that you would never know the answer to unless you wrote it on your notes sheet. Overall, Dr. Demesa is a very nice, but also no nonsense, lady who really wants you to do well. As someone who has taken a lot of science professors, she is definitely one of the better ones, so I would definitely recommend taking her!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHEM 1301 - Dr. DeMesa is such a good teacher; you just really need to pay attention to the lecture! She does give a lot of work, but it all enhances your understanding of the content. You have quizzes every week, but once again, it helps her students grasp the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2023-04-24

Comments:1405 - Dr. DeMesa is an amazing professor and she truly cares about her students. The class is broken up into 5 parts allowing for there to be two chapters per exam. For each exam she allows students to create a one sheet cheat sheet that you can use for the exam. MAKE ONE! It's a waste of a good grade to not make the cheat sheet. There is also a final project that she gives that needs to be completed throughout the semester. Make sure to do it and get it in on time. It's a waste of points again if you lack in this class. The textbook isn't necessary to purchase but it can be a helpful tool if needed. If you plan to slack in this class your wasting your time and a good grade because it truly is an easy boost to your GPA. If you ever need her she is extremely willing to help. She's also super sweet to pray over her students before each exam. Highly recommend her class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. Demesa is an amazing teacher! Coming into this class I thought I was going to hate it, but it ended up being a favorite of mine. The workload is very manageable and Dr. Demesa really cares about her students’ success.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE1300 - Dr. Demesa is amazing and I would take her for every class if I could. There are a lot of nursing majors in her class so it was nice to be able to meet other people with the same major as me. There are 4 lecture exams plus a final and she has 2 grading methods for the class and she will use whichever one gives you the higher overall class grade. There is a lot of work but if you stay on top of it and do it as you are learning the material it will actually help you instead of waiting for the final deadline of all the stuff. There are owlv2 topic tests over each unit which have a rolling deadline to after Thanksgiving break and if you complete all of them on time then you are able to replace your lowest lecture exam with the owlv2 grade which for many people is a 100. I would suggest doing the owlv2 topic tests and practice assignments for their original deadline that way you don't have to scramble to finish the exam replacement since you did it along the way. That is my biggest tip with all of the owlv2 because the workload is a lot but if you stay on top of it, it won't seem like it. Attendance does count as part of your grade so go to class. After each class there are 1-3 quizzes over what that class was over and you have 2 attempts on each. She drops a lot of quizzes and she also drops a lot of your owlv2 practice assignments. I took ap chem in high school and scored a 2 on the exam because I felt it was so hard. Dr. Demesa made this class easy for me and she is the sweetest person ever so definitely take 1300 with her!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-12-09

Comments:1300 - Dr.Demesa is actually the most incredible professor for intro to chemistry. She is always more than willing to meet with you and truly wants the best for all her students. She goes through some chapters pretty quickly but gives you quizzes after each class to help you apply what you just learned. If you do the online work (which is a lot) you can replace your lowest exam grade with a 100, and since there are only 4 exams this is super helpful. There is usually 1-3 online quizzes after each class, but you get 2 attempts on every one. I seriously cannot recommend her enough. This isn't an easy class necessarily, but she is a great professor who will help you through it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - Chemistry and Society- Dr. De Mesa is so sweet and helpful. She offered so much extra credit in this class that I had over a 100 for most of the semester. She also does office hours almost every day so take advantage of them. The tests were pretty easy and there were only 2 plus a final. My only complaint is that this class was a bit disorganized and did not have a very set schedule. Besides that I really enjoyed being in Dr. De Mesa's class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-06-01

Comments:CHE 1405 - Dr. De Mesa is the sweetest lady ever! She understood that we were all non-majors and wanted us to succeed. Her class consisted of 2 tests, quizzes, a term paper, and a term presentation. If we ever did not understand the material she would create extra practice problems to help us. This class was better than high school chemistry and De Mesa is a fabulous professor!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I loved taking CHE1300 with Dr. De Mesa! She wanted only the best for her students, and provided ample resources for us to succeed, through SI, office hours, etc. She always came prepared to teach and was straight to the point. The only complaint I had was how she assumed we had mastered a concept within the first few minutes of her introducing it, which most did not. I also didn't like how our homework in OWLv2 was almost always an unknown; deadlines were never clarified besides the exam replacement assignments. That was the biggest upside to the class; if we did all of the Exam Replacement reviewer homework, that score replaced the lowest exam score, which really helped with maintaining my A. This is more of a personal complaint, but sitting through a lecture was hard when she would sit there and cough into the microphone, amplifying the sound for 5-10 minutes of class. I was easily distracted and could not regain focus.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-12-10

Comments:1300 - De Mesa is a good teacher. She teaches straight off the handouts she provides. She wants you to be successful. She has a method that allows you to drop your lowest test grade and replace it with other work you do over the course of the semester. Even if you're bad at Chem an A is easily achievable. I don't like Chem at all and this was my first Chem class and I was able to do well. If you don't do well in this class it's because you didn't put in the time. The tests were taken online and multiple choice and fill in the blank. If you're taking De Mesa, you'll be totally fine!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-11-30

Comments:1300 - To be honest, I genuinely hated this class. Nothing is particularly wrong with Dr. De Mesa - she has excellent office hours and her ability to teach is pretty good. She definitely goes a bit fast at some points, though, and somewhat expects everyone to suddenly understand the material after the first two problems. But she is willing to give extra help. My biggest problem with the class was the workload. If you're good at chemistry, great! You don't have to do any online work and solely rely on exams and attendance. If you're bad at it, like me, then it's quite a bit. OwlV2 every Saturday and Online Quizzes through Canvas every Tuesday and Thursday. It was pretty overwhelming at times especially while working a job and having homework for other classes, but balancing all that was almost insane. I did really well in high school, but I have NEVER and I mean NEVER taken a chemistry class before so I did really crummy in this class and that's even with some studying sprinkled in when I could. So a bit misleading as an "Intro" class that states no previous knowledge of chemistry is needed or something. I feel like that would have benefited me a bit. Another downside was that this class is like 90% math which I'm not too great at in the first place. Overall, a little above average professor and it sucked that this class was at 7:35 AM. Not a morning person lol  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa is so sweet and willing to take extra time to go over material with you that you're struggling with. Her notes are fill in the blank PowerPoint slides that she pre-prints for you. We used a site called Mastering that has modules you had to work through that were "All or nothing" for grades. I had to study frequently outside of class but made 100s on 3 of her exams and As on the other 2. I got these grades by attending ALL SI sessions possible and hardcore studying 2 days in advance of the tests. I was worried coming into chemistry because High school chemistry was difficult for me, but this class really wasn't bad if you put in time to memorize the elements, stoichiometry conversions, characteristics of elements, and all the acronyms. You can do it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - AMAZING teacher. I took her course fall 2020 from home and I can tell you that she cares about her students. I did awful in high school chemistry barely passing with a D-. The first exam I took in her class I did awful, but then I changed my habits and actually cracked open the textbook, went to SI sessions, and visited Dr. de Mesa in office hours to review my exams and quizzes and I did fantastic. She truly wants her students to do great. She is very very available during all office hours. She gives us at least two practice exams with the answer sheet and how to solve before every exam. She is very very nice, caring, and understanding. I honestly suggest you take her.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa's 1300 class has been a HIGHLIGHT of my semester. I almost switched out of the class on the first day because I thought I was in the wrong class and she was very intimidating, but I am SO GLAD that I stayed. Though she can be blunt, she is also the sweetest, most concerned, and an incredibly hilarious professor. Not only does she take the time to pray over the class before tests, which always made my day, but she works hard to keep the class engaged. Multiple classes had me laughing to the point of tears at her anecdotes and mannerisms. I didn't feel confident in chemistry whatsoever in high school, but Dr. de Mesa really makes sure her students are performing their best by handing out packets for each unit, assigning short quizzes after class, and using OWLv2, all of which prepare you really well for the tests if you do them. (She also offers exam replacement on OWLv2 which is time consuming but highly worth it since you get to replace your lowest exam score!) If you're debating whether to take Dr. de Mesa, DO IT - she is such a gem!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. De mesa is the best professor I have ever had at Baylor. She is so kind, super funny, and very passionate about chemistry. There is a bigger workload, but every assignment is made to HELP you understand and grasp material! I didn't have any trouble on tests because the material was covered very well. Dr. De mesa is always available for help, and she makes sure no one is left behind. DEFINITELY recommend taking her class!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-05-09

Comments:Chem 1300 - Dr. De Mesa is a GIFT FROM GOD. She is the most helpful, sweet, caring professor I have had a Baylor. She scared the crap out of me the first few weeks of the semester, but turned out to be the most engaging professor. She cares about her students and that they learn and retain the info she is teaching. She literally makes us all close our eyes and tells us to raise our hands if we don't understand a topic so we don't feel embarrassed if we don't. If you goto her office hours, she will sit with you and explain a topic in 10 different ways until you understand. She gives you study guides before tests, and if you can do well on them you will do well on the tests. She assigns homework and weekly quizzes, but they are helpful for your learning. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE THIS PROFESSOR SHE IS AMAZING!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-22

Comments:1300 - She is an incredible professor and person. She gives out packets for every unit and they have everything you will need to do well on the test, you'll need to buy the book so you can register for the OWLv2 program but other than that you'll rarely need it! Her office hours are difficult but she's always willing to find a time that fits your schedule. There is no homework but there are 2-3 Canvas quizzes every week worth about 4 points. They aren't super hard but still make sure you do them. There is also OWLv2 assignments due for every section, they take a while but are doable (TIP--if you purposefully get them wrong the method to answer it correctly will pop up and you can regenerate the problems without messing up your grade). She also offers exam replacements through OWLv2 but you have to do every one to get the credit. Her exams are T/F and multiple choice !! Also keep in mind that it's mostly freshman that take this class so your study habits will need modification. I loved this class and Dr. de Mesa she's very kind and genuinely cares about her students success not only in class but also in life. If you ever are having trouble with a concept GO SEE HER she wants to help you. Personally SI didn't help me but at least go to the first couple to see if it does.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - OWL is annoying and a lot work but it replaces your final grade and is often more difficult than the test, so if you get through these you will ace the test. I only went to SI when I needed help on a topic but usually I was fine. She prints your notes for you which is so helpful. Once you get to anatomy, you will wish you were still in her easy class. Super sweet, kind lady that will pray for anything you need and cares for her students whole heartedly  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I'm giving you a very honest opinion of the class. If you're not a nursing major and this course is not required, do not take it. It's a lot of work and you need to push yourself to do well on every assignment. Dr. De Mesa has your best interest, kind, and a good teacher. I would just recommend you take every chance to go to SI sessions and do the OWL replacement.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-05-20

Comments:1300 - She truly cares about your well being and success in her course. The tests are not bad if you study her lecture powerpoint and practice problems. Owl is super annoying but offers the ability to replace your lowest test grade so it is worth it. Class is overall very doable and highly recommend taking her.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-05-05

Comments:1300 - she's lovely!! yes its hard but so is nursing. OWL really teaches you how to do the problems. you'll have weekly quizzes but you can do them with people so they're really easy. tests weren't too hard. she won't curve your grade but its not too hard to pass. I could've studied more and done better but I didnt lol  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2019-05-01

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa truly cared about her students doing well. She would ask if anyone needed her to repeat a hard concept and even if one person raised their hand she would go over it slowly. If you're looking for a professor who will help you and won't look at you like you're stupid then Dr. De Mesa is the right professor! She would pray over the class right before every test and she would pray that we passed the test. I greatly appreciated her confidence in us and it truly shows how great of a professor she is. She also made class fun even when it was 8 am.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-04-16

Comments:1341 - I love Dr. de Mesa ! The content of her class was super hard but she is a great teacher ! She prints out lecture notes for all of us so that we can fill in the blank and do drills. She's super kind and always willing to help further explain things if you have questions in class or go to her office hours. There was a ton of homework and quizzes in this class but she mostly just does it to boost your grade and give you extra credit in the end. I wish I could take her for every class !!!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2019-04-15

Comments:1300 - TAKE HER!!! She truly cares for her students and wants them to understand the material. She gives a lot of owlv2 assignments, but I feel like that is what really helped me understand everything and get an A+.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-04-05

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa is the best teacher you will ever have at Baylor. If you don't understand something and go into her office hours, she is full heartedly focused on you and making sure you're leaving there will full understanding. Also during her teaching, she takes surveys on if the class understands the new concept or not, and if even one person is confused, she gives more examples. Truly wants everyone to succeed in the class. Make sure you do OWL because it is such an easy extra credit opportunity. TAKE THIS CLASS!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-03-27

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa is a pure joy to have as a professor! She teaches things very thoroughly and makes sure everyone understands the concepts clearly before she moves on. If you choose to do the exam replacement grade then there is quite a few things you have to do online but if not then the workload is not a lot (I recommend doing the exam replacement extra credit!!!). She gives practice tests for each unit that represent the real exam pretty accurately. Not a very challenging course and would 100% suggest taking it, even if you are not a nursing major.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-12-11

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa is the best!! The subject can be somewhat difficult but she makes it seem so easy. If you do all the online homework and go to every SI, you will make an A in this class easily. Her test reviews are harder than the actual test and I made an A on every single test. I actually loved this class and found it fascinating. It can be a lot of work if you choose it though. There is a lot of online homework but it is optional. I would choose that path though because it is usually pretty easy, it prepares you for the tests, and if you do every single one then it will replace your lowest test grade. If you don't have a good background in chemistry, don't worry this class is great!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-11-12

Comments:1302 - I retook Chem 1302 by taking her summer class. It was a lot of work as it was all crammed into one month but I honestly feel like I have a much better understanding of chemistry now. Unlike my previous chem profs, she does not try to trick you with questions, give all or none answers, and she gives some opportunities for bonus points. Overall, a tough but fair teacher who I really learned a lot from. She's a really nice lady and I wish she taught OChem!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2018-08-13

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa is my favorite professor at Baylor! I never thought I would like chemistry, but I honestly looked forward to her class every day (even though it was at 8 am!!) Her tests are fair, and if you do the online homework you can replace a test grade with a 100. I got a B on every test except one (which I got an A on), and I got an A in the class. TAKE DR. DE MESA!!!! You won't regret it!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I freaking love Dr.De Mesa. She is the most helpful professor and cares SO much about her students and it shows. There is a decent amount of work but in the end it really helps you learn the material/ get your grade up! she drops your lowest test grade and replaces it with your average homework grade. Test are a good test of your knowledge and are more than fair. taking this class has been the highlight of my semester, I seriously love this lady.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa is one of the best professors I’ve had in a non-major course at Baylor. I’m not a nursing major, and had the option of taking the “easier” chem1405, but chose this one instead. I don’t regret it. Dr. de Mesa teaches in a way that’s easy to understand, and if you don’t get it, she’ll help you get there. She has a great personality, and makes an 8am something to look forward to - I was actually sad I missed her class on the days I couldn’t make it. There is a decent amount of work involved - online quizzes twice a week that are available for a limited time, which makes it a bit inconvenient, but I understand that it’s to help reinforce what was learned in the pervious class. She also has an exam replacement, which is a ton of work, but can almost save you by 10 points to your overall grade. Her exams are fair, and if she tells you to memorize it, do it. I can honestly say that if I had put in the work this course requires, I would’ve had a high A. I put in about 2/3 and I should be borderline. An extra hour a week can really make a difference in your grade - so just do it. :-)  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - I never thought I'd ever say that I enjoyed a chemistry class, but with Dr. de Mesa I actually loved it! She is one of the best professors I've had. Sometimes I find it very hard to pay attention and find my self not listening when a professor is speaking, She teaches in a way that you'll somehow want to listen. She is also so sweet, caring, and funny. She will always want to help you in anyway that she can. Her class does have quite a bit of work, but it's nothing that isn't manageable! Always do the extra credit, and if you pay attention you'll most likely do great in this class!! Take de Mesa for chem, you won't regret.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1300 - Dr De Mesa is easily one of my favorite professors. She not only teaches so well, but is also always available for office hours to look over tests with you, or just help if you are confused about something. The class was a lot of work, but her tests were very fair (actually over material that she taught) and the quizzes due throughout the week were helpful review for the tests. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing the owlv2 exam replacement. Although it takes a long time, it was one of the main things that helped me study for the tests, and it replaces your lowest test grade. I failed one test, and the exam replacement was what made me able to still get an A! I highly recommend taking Dr. De Mesa!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHEM 1300 - She is a really sweet and funny woman, who cares about her students. Dr. de Mesa can teach very well, she offers extra credit, and a lot of practice materials. I highly recommend her.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - Nursing majors- Dr. De Mesa is the BEST! She is the SWEETEST woman in the world and SO accommodating! She is all about helping you thrive! Some of her test questions are fun because she actually uses your nursing major and has you convert types of medicine for patients! Honestly she is the sweetest woman in the world and this class is amazing! If you've never taken AP or honors chemistry, you will have to work at it a little bit, but she fully prepares you and you will do great!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHEM 1300 - TAKE HER!!! I got in her class late because I switched from 1301 because I found out that I didnt need to take 1301. I was like 4 weeks behind (a had a ton of make up work) BUT de Mesa got to know me and even knew my name! I took this class about 2 years ago and when she sees me she still recognizes me and says Hi and asks how I am! Anyway, she is sooo good at teaching. I got a 100 on one of the tests and As on all the others. Honestly one of my favorite teachers! I went to SI just for the extra credit!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-06-16

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa is a tough cookie, but this class is very doable. She is a delight to be around in class, and is naturally funny. Her lectures are filled with stops along the way for you to do practice problems that help clear up misconceptions. She has biweekly ONLINE quizzes, online homework, 5 lecture exams (don't worry, she posts practice tests and answer keys), and a final, and your attendance is factored into your grade as well. Then there is all the extra credit you can wrack up: 10 or so topic preparation assignments, going to SI, and she even has 20 additional homework assignments with an unlimited number of attempts that their aggregate average replace your lowest exam score. And if that sounds like too much work, get this: she has another method of grade calculation that just factors in the 5 lecture exams, the final, and attendance. She calculates your grade using both methods and gives you whichever one is the highest. (In other words, her workload is what you make of it). The assignments she gives are conducive to one understanding the material, and remembering for a long time. And if at any point you're lost, her SI, Travis, is always available to help as well (this is an understatement) and has awesome worksheets, and plus going to see him gets you extra credit. All in all, Dr. de Mesa really is a excellent lecturer and it is clear how much she cares about her subject and her students.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Dr. De Mesa is one of the most caring professors I have ever had the pleasure of knowing! She will take time out f her day to sit and talk with you about the class or anything else on your mind. She makes the class super interesting and she sincerely wants to see her students excel. The majority of the workload comes from an online resource she uses for chapter assessments and quizzes, but as long as you stay on top of all of the assignments, you should be fine. She is truly a wonderful human being, and I highly recommend taking her class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1341 - Dr. De Mesa is one of my favorite professors at Baylor. She is very caring about her students, and she takes time and slows down her lectures when the class doesn't understand. It was a very laid back class, and since there was only one section, you knew all your classmates. Really, every class period felt like a family gathering. The large amount of extra credit options made me feel like I learned the material better and it saved my bacon when I did poorly on a text because it replaces your lowest exam grade. I am really bad at interpreting through accents, but there was never a time when I didn't understand what she said. She's very motherly, and I honestly would jump at an opportunity to take another class with a professor who cares as much as her.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - TAKE DR. DE MESA! The most AMAZING professor ever. She gives LOTS of optional work... but do it if you want to excel on every test. I was not very strong at Chemistry in High School and have made amazing grades on everything. Just do all that she assigns. She does it to HELP you, even if it is time consuming. She prays before each tests and wants the best for each student. You will get out of it what you put into it. She rocks and I wish she could teach all of my classes.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Okay let me first say that i try my best to keep as great a GPA as possible, and her doing the minus system really kills mine. It's not that her class is difficult, it is simply so much work that you simply do not want to do, and you get points off everywhere, and yes you get multiple tries on test and it doesn't even tell you what question you got wrong. Her test I mainly got A's on with one B i believe which i used the OWL replacement for, but even then with all my test points off and the final exam points i missed (while still getting an A) I received an A- in the course. People say she offers plenty of extra credit which I did not see why they said it considering you have to do over 800 questions to have a replaced test out of five which is just not fair to me. I would not recommend her if you want to have a good GPA, but if you're fine with a "B" then go right ahead.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - OK, YES she is Filipino, and has a slight accent, but let me reinstate that it is a SLIGHT accent. To the person who says they can not understand her, is very misleading. Dr. De Mesa's English is excellent, so please do NOT be discouraged. Dr. De Mesa is an amazing lecturer, very motherly, and makes cute jokes every now and then. She reads a bible verse to wish you luck on EVERY test, and tremendously cares about her students. In order to get an A in her class, do good on all the quizzes (very easy if you pay attention in class/ multiple tries), her tests are a complete reflection of your understanding, and she offers a ton of extra credit, although you shouldn't need it. Part of your grade in from clicker questions, SO i strongly recommend sitting next to smart students who strive for no less than a A. If you did not take AP chemistry in HS then go to ALL the SI's ; they are extremely helpful and help you retain what you learn + the test reviews helped a lot. Dr. De Mesa is AMAZING and WORKS HARD, the only ones who do not make an A in her class are students who will change their Major, suck at studying, or do not care about college. OH BTW, just get the regular book and not the EXSPENSIVE baylor edition. I didn't do any practice problems and I made an A, because she hands out so many good resources as it is, HOWEVER if you struggle with math and science, then get it. Practice is key.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa is very funny, uses a lot of analogies to help you better understand the content, and always asks the class if we have any questions. She's also Filipino, so if you're not good with foreign accents it might be hard for you to understand her lectures. She hands everyone fill in the blank powerpoint notes which she goes over in class. We take three different types of online quizzes (about 4-6 quizzes per week), but she takes the top eight grades from those three different types of quizzes. It's ok if you don't take an online quiz here or there, it won't count against you as long as you're content with your top eight. There are TONS of extra credit opportunities. Each SI you attend it 0.5 a point, and if you attend all of them you get 14 points (the SI's aren't very helpful, but it's worth the extra points). The homework is usually about 2 points each, and if you don't do it doesn't count against you either. There's also an EXAM REPLACEMENT option that replaces your lowest exam grade (other than the final) with a hundred (or however many of the practice problems you complete). When you buy the textbook you'll receive a CD which you will use ALL the time, and with it you'll have the option of answering a lot of practice questions that goes towards your exam replacement. The more questions you answer correctly the more points you receive. If your lowest exam is let's say a 70% and you answer 80 questions perfectly, then your new grade is then an 80%. If you memorize everything she tells you to memorize, do the practice problems, and show up to class then you should do fine on her exams.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa's class is no joke, but let me say that I learned SO much in one semester. She is very interactive and is a great lecturer. You need to go to class in order to understand the material, especially if you're not a science type person like me. The class is no doubt a lot of work, and you have to keep up with it, and the tests are a true "test" of what you know. The little details matter to her, but once you get done with this class, you feel so smart. I loved this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I absolutely love Professor De Mesa, and I'm not the type that gets along with professor that well honestly. She literally asks in class if she is going too fast or too slow, and does not go very fast. She does not go slowly either to where you want to fall asleep. I like chemistry so maybe that's why I did well, but she spaces the material out so it is easy to digest. She offers all of the help needed to get a good grade!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Take her class! Dr. de Mesa is adorable and is generally a really good teacher. She always makes sure that everyone is understanding the material, and she prints out the powerpoints for everyone! You have a quiz every wednesday and friday, and two assignments every weekend, but they're usually pretty easy and you can retake them up to 3 times. Comments:1300 - This teacher is the most amazing teacher you could get coming into college. Don't let her intimidate you the first day, she will throw you a ton of information to scare you. I knew a girl who drop the day after because the class seem like it was big workload. Honestly here how her class is ... Quiz on blackboard every Wed/Friday, TP Assignment on the weekend and Self Assessment on the weekend (only if you finish the chapter within that week). But overall you have 5 exams and the final, and the exams aren't that hard just a lot of memorizing. However don't come in with a mindset like you know everything because she will find ways to trick you. Also you have OWL and if you do OWL replacement and you do all the questions and make a 100. She will replace your lowest test grade with the 100. So why wouldn't you take her?  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. de Mesa is a very sweet lady and a good chem teacher. The class will be a breeze if you've taken a decent chem class in high school. Having no good chem background myself, I still found the class to be fairly easy and Dr. de Mesa's ppt note printouts were helpful. Do outside reading if you need to, memorize what she tells you to and you will be fine. Also, SI only slightly helped. I do recommend taking her.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHEM1341 - I have to tell you the real about her class. Provided you really want to learn something from college, and make best use of your pricy tuition, choose her lectures. The introduction of bio and orgchem makes you thing more, which is pretty helpful for the 3000 level organic chem. I have to say the workload is not much light, we have 10 quizs, 4 exams, and 10 TPs (which helps and push you read the book), don’t agree, you’re supposed to read textbook, all knowledge in books. Homework for exam substation( fair for everyone), 10 online quizs.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I can't recommend Dr.De Mesa enough! Her class is amazing. She has a slight accent, but it's not too hard to understand her. She explains things very simply and usually cracks jokes and makes it fun, so it’s easy to learn if you’ve never taken chemistry before. If you have taken chemistry before, this class is a breeze, but not boring! She is always willing to meet one-on-one, and is a very pleasant person. She gives you the powerpoint handout to go through while she lectures, and her tests come directly from that and are easy. There are weekly online quizzes and very short homework assignments. You get three chances to do each, and she takes the best grade out of the three. She also allows you to complete a separate online homework assignment to switch out for your worst test grade. TAKE HER!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Intro Chem - For a person that absolutely loathes chemistry, I have to admit that she made it halfway interesting. She taught the course well and I actually learned a lot about chemistry (even though I really don't really care about the course) Her workload is pretty heavy and tests take a good amount of studying but she is very helpful and gives a handful of extra credit opportunities.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1300 - De Mesa is a super easy professor. You get power point handouts and they are just like the tests. The tests are super easy so don't psych yourself out because she makes them seem harder than they are. Super easy course especially if you took Chem in high school.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Very good teacher, best one at Baylor. Material is easy to understand, powerpoints are very helpful. Highly recommended.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1300 - Dr. de Mesa is a wonderful professor and her class is everything a intro class should be. The class can be a bit annoying and boring, but she tries to make it better. Comments:1341 - At times the language barrier can be a little hindrance because she doesn't always understand what the student is asking, but she's one of the nicest professors I've ever had. Goes out of her way to help you learn the material and wants her students to succeed. I would take her again in a heartbeat.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem 1300 - Love her!! I hated chem in highschool but she made it so easy. Her accent is a little difficult to understand, but she will take extra time to explain if you ask her to. Her tests were a little challenging but she is a fair tester, nothing was on them that we did not cover in class. Her SI's and review sessions are extremely helpful. She takes attendence every day, so go to class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - Weekly online quizzes and in-class quizzes are given but once you have 10 quizzes she will drop the others. Test are relatively easy, a review session is normally offered and she will post 2 past exams to use as study guides. All tests are multiple choice and true/false. Never really had any homework. De Mesa explains concepts in very simple ways and is a very good professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Amazing teacher and very understanding. She is the sweetest lady ever and her class is hardly hard. Don't buy the book because she uses OWL which has an online textbook. Comments:1300 - I walked into chemistry with a set goal of failure, I was terrified of chem, hated it, and just had terrible professors in HS. But, Dr. de Mesa is absolutely wonderful, she is a funny lecturer, she's detailed and very thorough. She gives around 4 exams and a final, quizzes online are weekly followed by a quiz in class the following day. I did extremely well on all her exams, but prepare to INVEST a good 4-5 hours of studying the night before each exam. Understand the material, connect the dots, and holistically understand why things happen, this method of studying made test after test extremely simple. In addition, she offers online hw, because of my scores, I usually just did the end of chapters for practice. However, it does replace your lowest test grade! PLUS! her SI- Natalie, is phenomenal. Natalie also helps by giving students other ways to look at a problem or understanding it if the method de mesa was giving just wasn't clicking. Attend ALL SI's and you pretty much have a guaranteed A in the course :) Ask all the questions you can in SI and in class, ENGAGE. de mesa loves it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Class was sometimes pretty boring, but she teaches very well. It is straight & to the point. She is very helpful & almost always available in her office. She emails back pretty quickly & is constantly sending the class email reminders about upcoming quizzes and tests. The only real homework is Mastering Chemistry online..but it is optional! However, if you do it all semester & get a good grade it will replace one of your exam grades! which helped my grade by replacing a C i got on a test with an A! She really does all she can to make sure everyone learns the material. You also get 5 points for just attending class everyday. As long as you make sure you study on your own, you should have no problem in her class. She is a funny & sweet little lady.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I love Dr. de Mesa!! I was awful at chemistry, but her class was well paced and she had a fair workload. I didn't like the mastering chemistry, but it did help in the end. Comments:1341 - Dr. De Mesa is an awesome teacher! She has a really effective teaching style and knows how to explain things so you can understand them. She assigns a lot of online homework but its easy and helps you learn the material. She has online quizzes that are usually try-until-you-get-the-right answer so its easy to make hundreds on them. Her tests are only over 3 chapters at a time but some questions are over material in the book that she doesnt specifically cover in class, so make sure you read the chapters. they're short! she has an accent that takes some getting used to but its worth it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHEM 1300 - Dr. De Mesa is absolutely adorable. She says the darnedest things. Unfortunately, she isn't a very good teacher. She goes through the powerpoints very quickly, and doesn't give very thorough explanations. Her accent can also be very tricky to understand. She assigns a ridiculous amount of online homework. I think the maximum she ever assigned was 54 pages. It's very helpful though. If it wasn't for MasteringChemistry I would have done very poorly in the class. There is an S.I. which is somewhat helpful and if you attend it regularly, she offers extra credit. She also offers make up homework assignments and will let you correct your problem sets. Overall, she's not a terrible professor, but I wouldn't take her again if I had the choice.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 1300 - She offers a lot of extra credit and gives you chances to make up missed homework. There is weekly homework, both online and out of the book. Attending SI is a must! She offers extra credit if you attend the majority of the SI sessions.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Intro to Chem - The class is not that hard. It's pretty easy to get A's on the tests and the Mastering Chem and quizzes are simple. However, you have to rely on the Mastering Chemistry to teach you. De Mesa will fly through the power points, pretty much just reading them off in her very hard to understand accent. If it gets close to the end of class and she's not done with the power point she will just quickly quick through the slides in order to get done. She asks if we understand a lot and even though many people in the class clearly say no, she still goes on. She is good about responding to emails and being helpful. Basically- the class isn't difficult but don't rely on her to teach you the material.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I hated this class. It is supposed to be one of the easiest at Baylor, but De Mesa cannot teach and just flies through the powerpoints and assumes we know what she is talking about-despite the fact she says "I assume no prior chemistry knowledge." Hmm. Dr. de Mesa is the sweetest lady, but I hated it. She also assigns a CRAZZZYYYY amount of mastering chemistry (online homework) sometimes due the night before the test, and usually we can't finish early because she hasn't finished teaching. The average time of MC for me was about 8 hours per chapter. Plus practice sets for a few of the chapters. The tests were multiple choice and t/f, they were average difficulty.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-12-06

Comments:CHE 1300 - Her class was a breeze. I didn't take AP Chemistry or anything, but I did have a regular Chemistry class. I had some idea on what she was mainly talking about. Even though she didn't take up assignments, the assignments on the mastering chemistry site is VERY helpful. If you aren't completely understanding it in the book or in class try this because it does give you hints and stuff to help you out and push you in the right direction. Her SI sessions are nice and the one right before the test is the best, because it is a test before the test so you get to find out what you do, or do not, know so that you can focus on studying what you don't. You can always e-mail her and she will reply fairly quickly [within the day or the next]. She's very nice and if you just can't get over her asian accent then it will be kind of hard.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-07-28

Comments:1300 - If you took AP in high school this class will be an absolute joke... She does have four tests and lots of quizzes and homework but it's only bad because it's easy and repetative. The questions on the quizzes and homework aren't outrageous or anything. I could maybe see how some people without a Chemistry background could get lost though becuase she did move quick sometimes. She does have test reviews that she gives out and when I took it she did her own SI's which can be nice.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I felt she was a wonderful professor, my favorite of the semester. I knew absolutely nothing about Chemistry before I went in there and came out feeling accomplished. She makes herself very available for anyone who has trouble with her course, and she encourages students to email her or post questions on the discussion board on blackboard. She is very nice, and is easy to learn from. She is a polymer chemist herself, and knows chemistry inside and out. With this knowledge she knows how to explain it in a way that is easy to comprehend. She values tests and quizzes very highly, and likes to use questions that make you think. She makes sure to assign homework that lets you easily understand and practice the lesson. I was very happy to take her class, and wish I could take it again.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1300 - This class is designed for students who have NEVER had chemistry experience. I hadn't taken Chemistry since the 10th grade. She gives you busy work, but it is very easy. You have homework about once or twice a week, a quiz almost every day and a test every 3 weeks. If you just REALLY suck at chemistry take it. If you took chemistry and/or Pre-AP/AP chemistry and came out with maby a C just take 1301. I feel this class was a waste of time for me personally because I could have kept up in 1301 and the amount of work for this class isn't really necessary but the repetitiveness helps you learn the material. If I had applied myself a little more I could have come out with an A or a B  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1300 - DO NOT transfer to her class half way through the semester. You have to make up all tests and quizzes. HOwever, if you take her class from the beginning she is great if you take her from the beginning. She is so helpful, and teaches what will be on the test. There are a lot of practice problems for homework, but you have plenty of time to do them, and will have done so many you will be ready for the tests with out having to cram for hours. I recommend her and wish I could take her again.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - The course is pretty much you would expect for entry-level non-degree Chemistry...easy. There is a fair amount of work though and the tests average was usually a B. There were four tests plus a final, 12 or so quizzes and 11 homework assignments (problems from the end of each chapter). If I could giver her a 10 for availability and helpfulness I would. She had tutoring sessions several weeks to help people stay caught up. On top of that there was a review before each test (outside of class).   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. De Mesa is a sweet lady but a little scatterbrained......she tends to repeat herself alot!!!!! She takes forever to get tests started and she is not very organized as far as the assignments are concerned. She is however, very flexible and will to work with students, especially those who have transferred mid semester from 1301. I can't say that I would really recommend her for this class but she's the only one that teaches it. MY ADVICE: take her for the full semester and DON'T TRANSFER IN BECAUSE YOU WILL BE LOST IN ALL THE WORKLOAD THAT SHE MAKES YOU MAKE UP AND SHE DOESNT GIVE YOU VERY MUCH TO MAKE IT UP EITHER!!!!  - Grade In Class:C+
