Comments:1301 - She is a wonderful person and truly cares about her students...if you are considered a favorite. It is very obvious which students she dislikes and although it is reasonable, there is a certain passive aggressiveness to it. The course is mainly self-led and for it being a language course has too much work to put in outside of class. She does respond to emails ASAP and there are a ton of outside resources to help, but the course just has too much to cover. You will finish 1 unit in about 1.5 weeks. Because of this, the class is mainly just for speaking, writing, and reading drills along with grammar review. This would be helpful, if it wasn't a class meant to have someone teach you Japanese. Overall, she is a wonderful person if you get on her good side, but the overall Japanese courses are so rushed it's hard to learn and especially hard to retain the information.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:JPN 1301 LAB - I really hate to leave such a bad comment, but I had issues with this class. Specifically with her rudeness and biases, which made it hard to learn. Fuji Sensei was extremely disrespectful, often having this attitude in a sense where if you answered one of her drill questions incorrectly, she would respond in such a passive aggressive way. I can say for sure that It isn't always easy to answer her questions because she could call on you for some random question that you have to answer quickly. She also seems to be biased when she teaches Japanese and does not stick to what is really correct all the time, just how she may have grew up saying it. For example, I remember this one time when she said it was Americanized to say "watashinonamae" instead of "watashiwa" when introducing yourself (which it isn't) or the time she said to not use the particle "no" in between numbers when saying your phone number, which is correct. These are all things I learned that are correct in my main Japanese class, so Fuji Sensei switching it up in the lab like it is not correct just makes everything confusing. At the end of the day, I just have to tell myself thank goodness I only have Fuji Sensei once a week for the lab. I would rather learn from someone more pleasant to be around and who can teach the content without her biased beliefs in the Japanese language. Could never appreciate her as a person and needs to teach better. Stay away!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:JPN 1301/1302 - While pretty strict and straight-edged, Fuji Sensei is SUPER nice and genuinely cares about her students. As with every first-year Japanese class, there were daily quizzes, and to my knowledge, she gives the most partial credit out of the Sensei's. However, her dialogue quizzes are HARD. You have to anticipate what she will change, and it's a bit hard to judge how she'll grade them sometimes. For those, just make sure you know what grammar points you're working on in the chapters well, and PRACTICE THEM (so you know you can use them lol). Also, review the vocabulary from previous units (plus short forms for 1302). Other than that though, she does feed her students (I ate so much Onigiri this year), and truly wants her students to succeed, even if that means pushing them harder than other classes. If you want to truly learn Japanese and keep it, take Fuji Sensei.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:JPN 1302/2310 - TLDR: Fuji is caring but SUPER challenging. Getting a good grade is actually pretty easy if you have the time to put in, but you need a lot of time you can commit. I want to start of by saying that this is my favorite class. I seriously do love this class, and that is in large part due to the people who are a part of it. That include Fuji Sensei. Fuji truly wants everyone to do well, and does give you the resources to do so, she just doesn't hand it to you... She makes you SERIOUSLY work for it. In short, Fujis class is just too much work for what it is worth (in my opinion, at least). Of all the Japanese professors, Fuji is without a doubt the hardest. She has very high standards for her students. She outright said this my semester of 2310, saying "you know I have the highest standards." This shows in both how hard she grades, and how much work she gives out. For both 1302 and 2310, there are 6 "homework assignments" per week MINIMUM. I say "homework assignments" because I am counting the daily in class quizzes as assignments. I'm counting them because if you don't spend a bare minimum of 30 minutes the night/day before prepping, you will not do well. Make quizlets for these quizzes and just go through until you know all the vocab... The other 3 "homework assignments" are actual homework assignments. They are the genki workbook assignments (for those who had JPN 1301 you know what this is). You can "self grade" these and easily get 100 for your workbook grade. That said, it is so time consuming. Some assignments can take 30 minutes, some can take an hour thirty. That's three times a week... Admittedly, a large part of why my grade in this class was so low is that I found it hard to justify putting in so much time and work for almost daily assignments that individually amounted to almost nothing in the final grade, but stacked up amounted to a significant percent... Compared to most Baylor students, I have very little time. I run multiple clubs, have a part time job, and I am a neuroscience major (ie, other classes are difficult and require time commitments as well). These are just the "every day" assignments Bi-weekly, there are grammar quizzes due before class on Monday. You get two attempts and can use the textbook, but there were still times I didn't get 100 on them. Partly due to starting them the morning of and running late, and partly because they are just challenging. The grammar is the most difficult part of the class in my opinion. Fuji moves VERY fast in class, and if you didn't come to class prereading the book and spending a decent amount of time trying to understand the grammar beforehand, you WILL struggle. The kanji is probably the second hardest part for me, just because I didn't put that much time into it. On top of what I previously listed, these are the other assignments/things you will need to do to make this class the absolute worst class I have ever taken when it comes to work load: 1. Discussion boards (Biweekly using grammar points as practice) 2. Blog posts (Biweekly, the week you don't have the discussion boards, again using grammar points following a prompt) 3. Semester long group project (An UNGODLY amount of work in 1302 as it was a video project where we had to write a script in Japanese using grammar points, memorize the script, film, and edit. Probably like 20 hours put into this over my 1302 semester. The 2310 was FAR more bearable. Not a ridiculous amount of work and actually a nice boost to your grade) 4. Lab (This one you have to register at the same time as class. It's just another hour and a half every week gone, and biweekly you need to somewhat prepare for an in-class quiz, although that is open textbook and you can get by not preparing) 5. Chapter quizzes (Biweekly on the second Friday after starting a chapter. They take place of that days daily quiz. That said, they make up a significant portion of your final grade and are UNBELIEVABLY challenging. I personally really struggle to do well on these.) 6. Oral midterm/Final (Actually pretty easy. You get a question bank before and can memorize the questions and responses. They are pretty easy to do well on and are a nice grade booster) 7. The actual Final (Like a chapter quiz but harder because it contains grammar points you haven't gone over for months. You are expected to produce these on the final) Ok, that was a lot. My point is, this class is crazy work. If you have a busy schedule already, for your own good avoid Fuji. I absolutely love her. She truly wants you to succeed, but this class has burnt me out multiple times... Getting a B is actually pretty dang easy if you have the time to do all the assignments, and getting an A is super achievable. These just weren't the circumstances I had. One final important note. If you are up for the challenge, you will truly learn a lot of Japanese. You will also make many friends. A surprisingly large amount of my good friends from my time at Baylor are people I met because of Japanese. The people who take this class are honestly really amazing people (with a few exceptions...) It is an amazing community, and honestly probably is worth the work. Sorry my review was so long, and if you made it here congrats I guess?  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1301 - Fujii-sensei is very nice. Her teaching is pretty easy to follow, and she is available to help if you have any questions. She also provides cool information about events and things going on around Baylor to help you get connected. She doesn't provide the most lenience on schoolwork, but she can be helpful.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FAS-1311 - She is not very lenient and takes points off for random things. She also does not explain things well and contradicts herself. Her rubrics are unclear and so is she. I would not recommend this teacher for this class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:JPN 2320 - Very helpful and kind professor. There is no doubt in my mind that Fujii 先生 would do anything for her students, but I will admit that this class is HARD. The workload is huge, but you get used to it after the first semester or so. That being said, the workload is huge for a reason, and the worksheets, quizzes, tests, audio drills, blogs, class presentations, and written and spoken dialogues truly did help in the long run. There are daily quizzes over vocabulary and kanji (and if you're in the 1401 classes, hiragana and katakana), daily worksheets (front and back), audio drills each lesson and dialogues that you have to write (for 2nd years, 1st years only have to memorize the book dialogues) and say out loud in class with a partner. There is also a video project each year, which requires you to write a script with a group in Japanese, film a five-minute "movie," edit it properly and show it in front of a few other professors and the rest of the Japanese classes. This was probably harder than the final, but if you have a good group, it should be kind of fun. The textbooks are around $60, but you only need one for each year so overall they're not very expensive. What I personally enjoyed most about this class was that it wasn't simply about learning a language, but also learning about the cultural customs and about Japan itself. Fujii 先生 helped each one of her students in countless ways and I can say that I've enjoyed each semester I've had her as a professor. I recommend her wholeheartedly. Take this class if you can!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Fujii Sensei is one of the best professors I have ever had. Japanese is a hard class for sure, but Fujii Sensei provides a lot of resources to be able to improve your skills. I came into the class with 0 knowledge of Japanese (didn't even watch anime lol) and it was intimidating for sure. However, Fujii Sensei made the class feel welcoming and tried her best to make everyone succeed. It is a language and a difficult one at that, and so there is a lot of homework (but trust me, doing it pays off). Homework is usually a worksheet or two each night (and sometimes audio drills ie recording yourself speaking Japanese), and there are a LOT of grades. There are daily quizzes (over the alphabets, vocab, etc-a few of these get dropped). There are performance grade "dialogues" that you have to recite in front of the class (probably 15-18 ish but a few get dropped) as well as chapter quizzes (basically tests) after each chapter (composed of reading, writing, listening, and speaking). There is a midterm and final oral exam as well as a written final exam. This probably sounds intimidating, and it is for sure. Definitely don't take Japanese if youre looking for a blowoff class/minimal work. Several people in my class ended up dropping. However, if you are willing to put in the effort, it's incredibly rewarding and Fujii Sensei is awesome. PS, there are ways to get extra credit equal to two full points on your final grade. DO IT.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:JPN 1401&1402 - People don't take Japanese if they're not interested in the language. I highly recommend taking Japanese for your foreign language credit. Fuji Sensei is one of the greatest professors I've ever had and I've learned so much from her in just two semesters of Japanese. I had an advantage in the first semester having taught myself Hiragana and Katakana years before taking this class, but as long as you study everyday, you should get a hang of the writing system pretty quickly. Sensei always tells you to use your cd to practice, but many of us don't, although I think my speaking would be better if I did use it. There's homework almost everyday and 3-4 consecutive quizzes per chapter, so you better study a lot. Don't skip class! If you have perfect attendance for the semester you'll get a free pair of cute chopsticks at the final! This class isn't easy, but I worked my butt off and got an A because I'm seriously interested in the language plan to go to Japan in the future. You might hate the workload, but I guarantee you'll have lots of fun and laughs in this class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Fujii Sensei is the most amazing person ever. I have never had a professor with such a desire to see her students do well. She's also really funny and makes learning Japanese so much fun. She gives a lot of homework and other assignments, but as people said before, if you like Japanese, it won't seem like work. Seriously folks, take her.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:JPN 1401 - Where do I begin. Fujii 先生 is probably my favorite professor at Baylor, hands down. She is so sweet, and really cares about each and every one of her students. If she notices someone is struggling in her class or even just having a bad day, she always tries to work with you in overcoming whatever your problem may be. There is a LOT of work in her class, including nightly homework, listening to the CD every night (seriously, listen to it every night. She knows her students don't, and while she pretends to make a joke out of it, you can tell it really bothers her that her students aren't practicing with it), quizzes almost every day, performance grades in front of the class, 2 very fun group projects, as well as a midterm and final oral interview and exam. Her class is NOT easy - there is homework EVERY night, and I probably spent a good 2 hours each night just making sure I knew what we were going to learn in class the next day. But if you are seriously passionate about learning Japanese, this class will be a breeze - again, not because it's a blowoff class, but because of how well Fujii 先生 teaches and how well the homework and quizzes test your knowledge of the material. The class is very fast-paced, but you come out of your first semester being able to understand basic Japanese writing and carrying on basic conversations with the Japanese foreign exchange students. I am taking her again next semester for 1402, and am seriously going to miss when I can't take her anymore, since she only teaches up to 2320. TAKE HER!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 & 1402 - Fuji先生 is extremely nice & is a great teacher. Japanese is a very hard language and it takes a lot of work sometimes to understand it but 先生 does her best to make it interesting and fun. There are usually 3-4 quizzes per chapter which is the bulk of your grade and there is homework almost every night but it usually is not difficult. MAKE SURE YOU PRACTICE WITH THE CD!!!! I didn't do this as much as I should have and my grade suffered because of it. If you do all the work and come to class then it will be almost impossible to fail this class. I had the option between taking Fuji for 2310 and missing a class that is required for my major or taking the other Japanese professor getting the class that I needed. I chose to be behind in my major so I could take Fuji 先生 because she is such a great teacher  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - I had her for Japanese 1301 and she was absolutely fantastic. She was funny, interesting, and just nice in general. Japanese is not an easy language, but I found as long as I did my homework every night and reviewed the vocabulary for the chapter, I did well. The last chapter was the hardest and by that point I was so burnt out that I was not studying much. One of her tests falls right on the day we get back from thanksgiving break. She warned us but most of us didnt study over break and ended up doing poorly. That test dropped me below the A I had maintained all semester and to bump it back up I would have had to make a 98 on the final which just didn't happen. I ended up with like an 89.1% and I didnt bother to ask her to bump it because she said in class before the final that she dis not do that.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2320 - She's an excellent professor. Japanese is a hard language, and she really pushes you to work hard and study a lot. Don't expect it to be an easy class, but the atmosphere is great and you can always talk to her about anything you're having problems with. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 years of Japanese with her!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:JPN 1401 - Fujii Sensei is a real great teacher. The homework and test are good ways to enhance study. it takes about 30 minutes to finish homework each time. Normally there will be 3-4 quizzes each Lesson (6 lesson in total). The teacher provide 2/30 extra credit on each lesson test. It saved me many times. No written Mid-term, but there is a midterm oral interview. If you dont procrastinate on homework(take off 1 of 10 points each day for belated homework), and willing to listen to the dialog audio file while you walking (accumulate 1 hr listening will be plentiful). I would think you can get at least a B+. some extra work will make u a definite A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - ふじせんせいはあたまがいいですよ! (Fuji sensei is smart)Me and my friends all decided to take Japanese, well, we weren't smart enough to find out there were multiple teachers and we got different ones. I got Fuji sensei, and my friends got Prefume, or Perfume, or whatever. Well let's just say that I knew more Japanese than they did in just 4 weeks. And by that time, their whole class was failing including them. This resulted in one of my friends drop failing the class and the other to attendence fail the class. Don't make the same mistake as they did, go with Fuji Sensei, it is alot of work though, quizzes almost everyday and hw almost every night, but the answers are online to help you so its ok. She tells you specifically what the quiz will be like!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Fujii sensei is a fantastic teacher - her class is lively and fun, but also a great learning environment. Of course, as with any language class, you're going to get a lot of work...and you have to keep up. But while some assignments will be challenging, she's surprisingly lenient in grading them. So if you put in the effort to keep up, you'll be fine in this class.  - Grade In Class:A
