Comments:MTH 3300 - Dr. Dugas shows his face at the start of class. Then the rest of the class he simply lectures. That is, he will either have his notes or the book on the projector in class and read from them, never to face the class again until class is over. Occasionally he will work out a worthy proof by hand. Overall workload is easy. Tests are average. For anyone looking to take Dr. Dugas, be prepared to read the book. The class is very centered around it until the last chapter where he starts to discuss a good amount of higher set theory and axioms not contained within the book. In my opinion, the content of the last 3 weeks of the class (not found in the book) are probably the best of the content.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:MTH 2311 - Dr. Dugas is nice. He has an accent but that won't affect your ability to understand him especially because he writes pretty much everything on the board that he says. He doesn't turn around to face the class during lecture. Expect a quiz every friday, but don't worry about them- they are always open notes and sometimes take home. Every couple of chapters there is a test. They are fair as long as you pay attention in class. He recommends homework to practice but it isn't graded. Lectures were confusing and not very helpful so I did a lot of studying on my own out of the text book which I would highly recommend if you want to learn the material. The practice questions during class were useful though because they were very similar to the exams. He is always kind to answer questions. Overall, I would recommend him for linear algebra.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2311 - Easiest linear professor. The homework is optional and there are weekly quizzes. Super boring and difficult to follow lectures but very very easy tests. Take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2311 - If you want to learn linear algebra, take another professor. If you want an easy A you don't have to work for, take Dugas. While I love Dr. Dugas's grading style, it was tough to pay attention in class. His lectures were boring and it was hard to understand his thick but cool accent. He didn't assign homework, but instead gave it in the form of take-home quizzes. These quizzes are pretty easy, and most of them were pulled from examples in the book. Dugas takes the test questions from the quizzes, so I was able to study the quizzes the night before and get As on the tests. He also lets you use your calculator for everything on the test, so if you have a TI-89 or a similar calculator with rref/eigenvalue functions, your calculator pretty much does the test for you. And even when you get an answer completely wrong, Dugas sometimes will count it as right if you at least started the right way. I found it a better use of my time to do other homework in his class, so I never paid attention to his lectures, yet the lowest test score I got was a 96. The final is actually somewhat harder than the exams, but it still wasn't difficult. At the end of the class, I really don't feel I learned anything, but I'm not a math major so I doubt I will actually see any of the material again. NOTE: I took the class over Summer II so I might have had a different experience than the regular semester.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1322 - Dr. Dugas was a blessing. The homework is optional, and he gives out weekly quizzes that average to a test grade. He let us make cheat sheets for all of his tests, so I never had to actually study. He's a nice guy and doesn't want you to fail at all. If you're a math minor/major though, I would suggest taking someone who doesn't let you use cheat sheets so you actually have to learn the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1322 - I'm so glad to have taken Dr. Dugas rather than another professor for this class. Despite it being a challenging course, he put in his best efforts to make it less challenging. Ideally, he was only supposed to make like the first 3 quizzes of the semester take home quizzes...every single quiz of the semester was take home. In the lecture before an exam, he would write out the # and type of problem that would be on the test. He would even work out an example of some of these problems. There is a cheat sheet allowed for each exam - I suggest writing down the concept followed by example(s). Honestly, he is such a lenient professor, and very nice and upfront if you go to him with questions. I'm just not that great at math and it's a degree requirement - hence my grade.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:MTH 2311 - Dr. Dugas explains the concepts from the book very clearly and is very good at answering questions. He taught so effectively that I would only use the book as a reference for I understood most of the information clearly. I stopped doing homeworks because I would study for the quizzes and do fine overall. Dr. Dugas made the class easy while I was still learning the material, which is a unique skill for a professor. Take him for Linear if you can. --Ben P. (I do not believe in completely anonymous criticism).  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2311 - If you're engineering: get into his class. If you're math: don't take his class. He teacher this class from a much more computational POV which is awesome if you're engineering but isn't really a good thing if you're going to be taking ACal in the future. His quizzes are always the same day, they're open notes, and very easy to do well on if you do and understand the homework. His tests are not open notes, but he tells you exactly what they will be on so if you study and understand the material you'll get an A on every single one of them. Theres never a guessing game with this guy, if you do what he tells you to you'll get an A. The downside is its very difficult to follow the lectures, but thats because linear algebra is in math language, which is very different than english. I had to teach myself mostly everything, which really isn't Dugas' fault, its just very difficult to explain the math in ordinary english. I'd definitely suggest him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2311 - I took Dugas for linear algebra. I would not call him a great lecturer. He is kind of dull and is not organized but he does have a cool voice (sounds like the terminator). From what I have heard about other linear professors, he seems easy. He does not put any proofs on his tests and he made most of our quizzes towards the end of the semester take home. I could have easily made a better grade had I just put in a little more effort. To sum it up, take him for linear if you just want to take the class and get it over with. If you want to learn linear and understand it, I would not recommend him.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1321 - Dr. Dugas is a great individual; always kept things interesting. HOWEVER, if you have what I would consider to be an average knowledge of Algebra, this class might not be for you. He happens to be a Career Algebraist and I think sometimes he might not realize when he breezes through simplifications perhaps too quickly. Either way, if you have to take him and you need to brush up.. Head up to the 3rd floor Math Lab and you will be solid.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2311 - He sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger!!! He definitely knows what he is talking about. Each class he would try to resist from showing us the proof of each theorem ( He's such a mathematician haha). The homework is optional and quizzes are open note. I feel like I learned the material!! TAKE HIM FOR LINEAR ALGEBRA!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:MTH 2311 - Dugas made linear algebra a breeze. He gave weekly quizzes and had a total of 3 tests. The material is challenging, but he made it easy and bearable. The guy is absolutely hilarious, and he has a totally freaking awesome accent. I can't even begin to describe how much I loved listening to him talk. he does not place that much emphasis on proofs, so he is much easier than other linear algebra professors. There was pretty much no homework involved with this class. Don't waste money on the book. Take him if you can!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1322 - I really like this professor. He has a thick accent but you can understand him very easily. He loves to make jokes about what the math is doing or what the shape of a function looks like so he keeps class interesting. The format of the class is fairly uniform: go over a new section, do a whole lot of examples, and on fridays have a quiz over what we learned that week. HW was optional but if you want an A in the class you better do at least some of it. Tests are a little tricky, but he allows you to bring a cheat sheet. I definitely recommend taking this professor.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:MTH 2311 - Tough course, easy class. Dr. Dugas makes Linear Algebra no task worth worrying over, but it is not due to his teaching ability. Actually inducing people to sleep, Dr. Dugas hardly even turns around to look at the students unless he has a humorous anecdote (and they are quite funny), to look at the time, or, occasionally, to ask if anyone has questions. The test are easy and straightfoward enough, and the Friday quizzes are another grade booster. Take him for a GPA helper, but not if you want to become truly adept in the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1322 - I liked Dr. Dugas. He has a thick accent, but you get use to it. Sometimes he can be a little confusing, but he always answers any questions you have. There is a quiz (usually 5 questions) every friday over what you learn throughout the week, but you get to use your notes so it's really not that bad. The tests are kind of difficult, but he let us use a cheat sheet which helps a lot. When he grades, he gives you partial credit if you did the work right and got the answer wrong. I suggest taking him for Cal II.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3350 - Dugas is a wonderful man with a adorable german accent. Occasionally he can be unclear, but overall, he's very straight forward. His tests are not terribly difficult. He does not collect homework most of the time, but there are easy weekly quizzes.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1321 - I loved Dr. Dugas, once you get used to his accent he's great at getting the point across. He won't bother with minute details that you don't need to know for the test. His tests aren't bad and he's really; good at curving if class average is low. On our first test we had 2 Ds an no one failed---with no curve at all, the class average was high. He gives quizzes every friday which is good for your grade. Just study so you know what your doing but he lets you use your notes if you have trouble. Watch out for test 3 its the hardest i must say. He does the entire final review with you in class. He offered my class an extra credit opportunity. He's alway avaliable, i really liked him...and if your paying attention in class you'll catch on to his jokes, he even makes fun of the application problems in the book like the ones about the growth of bacteria he said "i dont know why we're doing this bacteria is gross." TI 89 HIGHLY recommeneded  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1321 - He's a nice guy. He's really easy too. Well, it's best if you took Calculus in high school or else you'll get lost in his class. I don't think he teaches it very well, but he's a good reviewer. and if you took it in high school and understood something from it, Dugas is a good one. He gives a quiz every Friday but they're usually from the homework and are basic problems, nothing tricky. His tests are ok. They're not impossible to do as long as you kind of know the concept. This semester, he gave a curve on two tests and a bunch of students scored over a 100 on them. I don't recommend him if you haven't taken Calculus yet because he can't really teach and you'll end up teaching yourself through the textbook. I reviewed myself that way and slept through class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1321 - The final was insane this year but aside of that Dugas was a great teacher. He definitly has an accent that takes a little getting use to but its not that hard to adapt. He's been at Baylor for a while and does a great job. I'm just sad he doesnt teach Calc 2. Take him and you wont be sorry!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1321- Calculus - He sounds like the Terminator. His quizes are really easy, they are every friday, you can use all your notes, he encourages you to put formulas and stuff into your calculator, and you never ever ever turn in homework. If you pay attention in class, he will explain everything that will be on the quiz and basically does the whole HW assignment for you. He says that the tests come from the quizes, BUT THEY DONT! They are really hard and long, and require a lot of studying. He does give really easy extra credit though. Take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:MTH1321 - He has a really thick accent. Most of the time I couldn't really understand what he was saying, though sometimes it is funny when he starts saying that the problem we did was wrong or problematic. But if you can help it, DON'T TAKE HIM. Basically, all the notes he put on the board, came straight from the book. Though sometimes it is quite helpful. If you end up taking him, I recommend studying your quizzes and stuff and the examples he does on the board.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:MTH2311 - Took it during summer. He's got a thick german accent, so if u dont like ESL teachers, dont get him. he's pretty funny though. tests were semi-managable, he didnt give partial credit in my class (odd for linear algebra), but given the alternative (oxford, johns) he's the way to go for linear algebra.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2004-11-30

Comments:I didn't like his lectures - he spent more time going over the homework than explaining the material. He skips a lot of steps so it's really hard to follow. Tests were hard; the homework took forever. But if you don't like going to class then I recommend him because he didn't take role too often.

Comments:I thought Dr. Dugas was great. I have a hard time in Calc. and I did very well in the class. I thought explained material very well and followed the book, so that it was easy to understand. I also loved the way that he went over so many homework problems...that really helped. His tests were a little hard, but I always managed to do pretty well. I would definitely recommend him.

Comments:Dr. Dugas teaches calculus and had I not taken it in high school, I definitely would have made a D or F. He makes math very complicated. He's a nice enough guy, but I definitely wouldn't reccomend his class.
