*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1420 - I will start this post by saying that I should not have gotten an A in this class. The amount of extra credit this man gives was so insane, but I still walked away from 1420 without knowing a single thing. If you need physics just for your degree and not anything else, I highly recommend you take this guy. Dittmann was so sweet, but I had to learn everything on my own via the textbook (I found it better to read it through the textbook during the lecture). While I know most physics professors will humble you and be completely unavailable, I think this is probably one of the better professors to take. To study, I recommend using Pearson+ and their lecture videos over the concepts because most of these reappeared in the HW's (which he gives TONS of) and exams from time to time. Speaking of HWs, you need to make a plan and stick with it (do not do the HW in one night, or you will regret it). Lastly, unlike most Physics professors who use the lab grade as a certain percentage of your overall grade, Dittmann will instead plug it into a function that will spit out a number. This number (Max Value is about 1.03) is then multiplied by your final average to give you your grade (as long as you get above an 85% in the lab, you will benefit from this, but anything below that and you're screwed). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1420 - The workload of this class is ridiculous so be prepared to work many problem sets with extremely difficult problems sometimes. Tests are pretty brutal in difficulty but you should manage by doing MANY practice problems in your free time to prepare. Look over misconceptual and quantitivate problems in your textbook and work as many as you can before you feel comfortable. He does 3 tests, each 15% of your grade and then the rest comes from the final, problem sets, and participation. He goes over slides and worksheets in class and while these aren't super useful, paying attention in class will still be help for abstract or less intutuive subjects later in the semester. Dittman is a very sweet guy and wants his students to succeed but you must still put in the effort. Also, he won't curve any tests so do your best. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1420 - I know I made a mistake taking the calc based physics, but I heard Dittmann was a great teacher. most of his reviews are from a while ago and his teaching ability is much worse than what the reviews say. He did work out examples, but he did not give homework that was helpful in the slightest. He gives practice exams but they are nothing like the real one. I spent so much time studying for this class and didn't do that well. I would not recommend him. The only thing I can say is that he is a very nice guy. However, as a teacher, he is not good. If you are looking for a career in physics or anything like that, he will kill your confidence. He killed mine, at least. The final exam was the most horrific test I have every taken. Also, the averages are always 50s and he never curves. Never. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:PHY 1430 - Hard class, but outstanding professor. Dittmann is the best professor I have had at Baylor. He is very pleasant in class and actually explains the material rather than just reading out of the book. Also, he lets you use your notebook on the test, so take good notes and do the homework and you will do fine on the test. By far the best way to do well is the homework. The two tests I did the homework for I got As on. The other two, I just copied the solutions, and got Cs on the tests. If you want an A and are willing to work a little for it, Dittmann is the man! If not, you should still take him because he is levels above any other physics prof, you just might not get an A. Also, his research is super interesting and you get a close look at all that at the end of the year - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1430 - Will answer any question but will not baby you through a problem. Actually making students think about the material. He lectures on the white board and actually explains everything that is needed for complete understanding of the materical Test are a great representation of the knowledge. If you go to lecture and take notes it directly corresponds to the exams. The ability to use spirals on the test help people like me who second guess themselves on problems. The spirals help for the test but do NOT give answers away. They are the most beneficial tools that is needed in ever class at Baylor. It strongly incourages you to pay attention in class and go to class. TL;DR Go to class and take notes = Easy A for exams - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1420 - This was a difficult class, a lot of my friends failed it. The only way I passed was a ridiculous curve on the final and an A average with homework. The tests were really hard and in a difficult testing environment (a room full of hundreds of people, hot and stinky.) Luckily, he curves better than the other physics 1 professors. Read the textbook, it helps, and he pulls a lot of questions from it on tests. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1420 Honors - Dr. Dittmann is by far the best professor here at Baylor, he prepares you very well for the departmental exams and really cares about all of his students. He uses mastering physics, but the workload is not extreme. Additionally, he brings lots of demonstrations to keep you interested during class. If you have the chance, take him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Honors 1420 - Dr. Dittmann is the best professor to take for Physics 1420. He truly cares about your understanding of Physics and brings in fun little experiments to increase your interest in the topics. He is also very willing to help you so long as you show that you are determined to learn. The tests for 1420 were departmental and I would like to think that Dr. Dittmann was one of the major reasons our class scored 20-30 points higher than the other classes. Overall, Dr. Dittmann is a great professor and definitely one of the best I've ever had at Baylor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1420-H - Dr. Dittmann is a great teacher. He usually explains the material clearly and works plenty of examples. if you do not understand something he is always willing to spend the time to help. - Grade In Class:B+
