*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1412 and 2412 - I loved having Dr. Spinks as a professor. He teaches a really hard class well and is always available for questions. You can tell he loves teaching, and the class was super enjoyable. I learned more in a semester than I had in four years of high school Spanish. The workload is quite a bit, but that's not really his fault. 1412 and 2412 are meant to be accelerated classes so the workload is just going to be a lot if you take those classes. However he makes it manageable and I think none of it was busywork. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2412 - Best Spanish teacher I've had, and I've had a lot of awesome Spanish teachers in my 6 years of Spanish. 2412 is a fast-paced class, but... Spinks is so passionate about the language, truly wants the best for your spanish-speaking abilities, and is quite funny. Definitely recommend. He a G. My Spanish improved a lot as well thanks to all the speaking and vocab. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - Dr. Spinks is the BEST Spanish professor I've ever had. I've taken Spanish for over 6 years now (HS and college) and let me tell you, you will learn in a welcoming, open to mistake environment with Dr. Spinks. He will never humiliate you, is gracious with his grading, and always is open to discussion in class. HE CARES THAT YOU LEARN THE LANGUAGE. While his course can be challenging, he always helps you when you make mistakes and goes over challenging material to make sure the whole group knows what's going on (SAINT). He also has daily quizzes, which sounds like a lot, but it helps you learn and they are minimal work that helps you prepare for your exams. The content of this course is engaging, easy to follow, and challenges with the right amount of familiarity. Spinks is a master at teaching language and is always open to helping his students. I would take him for the entire rest of my Spanish career if I could!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2412 - SPINKS IS THE BEST!!! I seriously cannot recommend him enough. he's kind, cares about his students and really takes the time to get to know all of them. He also cares about the class as a whole and had us interact a lot so we would actually get to know every person in the class, I have yet to experience that in any other class. We met everyday since the course is accelerated and at the end of the year he said we really felt like family. The general atmosphere in the class was just so great and welcoming. No one was scared to speak in Spanish and this taught all of us to be more confident in our speaking abilities. He does give a lot of quizzes, we had one almost every day, but they are short vocab quizzes and I would literally review the vocab 10 minutes before class and be fine. his daily homework assignments should take you like 30 minutes tops, unless it's a movie. He assigned only 2 and they're honestly very fun to watch and interesting. It also is not the end of the world to him if you don't find the time to watch them entirely before the next class, as long as you have seen it before the exam. Once again I cannot hype him and this class up enough. I genuinely enjoyed every single class with Spinks, especially his sermons. Spinks genuinely cares about his students and wants them to learn not only Spanish, but life lessons as well and he often reminds his class of the importance of traveling, exploring the world, and appreciating the small things. Take his class, you won't regret it!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA1412 - Accelerated elementary Spanish 1. This class was so much fun and Dr. Spinks is the best. He is kind and fun! The class was kinda a lot of work, but it wasn't hard. Just a lot of memorization, but that's not really his fault. Just how the accelerated elem spanish course has to go. He is an excellent teacher and can explain everything very well. If you're taking any spanish class, I highly recommend him if you actually want to learn how to speak. Don't take this class if you have difficulty with languages or aren't willing to actually do homework/learn-- just take the normal, UNaccelerated spanish. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1412 - He's an awesome guy and teacher. You have to memorize 20 so vocab words, read a lesson plan, and 4 easy acitivties online every night for homework so just be prepared for that, but I get it done in about 30 minutes. Class is every day in 1412 which towards the end of the semester is so frusturating but the class got super close seeing each other every day and it's only 50 minutes long. There is a quiz every morning and he grades hard on every quiz and exam which sucks. But, I would do it again because it gives you 4 credits and now I don't need any more credits for language. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1412 and 2412 - DR. SPINKS IS THE BEST!!! I literally learned more Spanish than I ever thought I could and I can speak in Spanish with people now! He taught me to love learning the language! He is so passionate about his teaching and about each of his students and encourages them and empowers them to learn unlike any other teacher I've had. His class was HARD for me but I took him two semesters because I was learning soooo much and he is the absolute best! On the last day of class, he gave this absolutely beautiful and moving speech on the love of God following our final reading for that class and we all teared up a bit for sure. DR. SPINKS IS THE BEST TAKE HIS CLASS! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:SPA 2412 - He is an amazing professor and really tries to make sure everyone keeps up and makes progress. Everything you do helps, and is important to bettering yourself in Spanish. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Overall Dr. Spinks is super chill and his class doesn't really do a ton of homework. Its mainly the same info from previous spanish classes. He does do daily vocab and sentence writing quizzes, but they are very easy if you put in like 20 minutes of work or less. Tests are kind of long and you will have to move quickly, which is a common theme in every spanish class at Baylor. Super chill professor and very forgiving class structure would definitely recommend. There is a corequisite lab which takes uo a lot of time, but theres no avoiding it regardless of which prof you take. The lab is a grade booster, about 20% of the class grade. Just be present in class and try to follow along for lab and lecture and you're like 70% there. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - TAKE DR. SPINKS!!! He is honestly one of my favorite professors of all time, I seriously considered taking an additional semester of Spanish just to take him again. I had so much fun in class and hated missing. He is so knowledgable and really cares. He can be pretty intense but he has a soft spot for some of his students for sure. I was never even close to being the smartest in the class but I made him laugh and always tried my best so he definitely took note of that and it helped down the line. He can come off as pretty introverted and stand-offish at first but once he gets comfortable with the classroom dynamic he is really a funny and caring professor. Participation is a huge deal to him. There were (simple) quizzes at the beginning of almost every class, which sucked, but they made me do the reading so they served their purpose. Exams are 100% free response and short-answer but he is very, very generous in his grading. Basically my advice is participate and try your best. He can be tough but he is a great professor. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:SPA 2412 - I love Dr. Spinks, he is one of the nicest professors on Baylor campus. Although this class is tough it is worth it, because Dr. Spinks really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. You need to be prepared to work when you are in this class but if you study you will be okay. At the end all your hard work is worth it. Dr. Spinks loves to joke with his students and is really such a sweet man. I would take him again if I could because he is simply one of the best professors I have ever had. 10/10 take him if you have the chance to you wont regret it. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2320 - I am currently taking Dr. Spinks for 2320 and he is amazing. He is a very nice man with a huge passion for spanish and teaching. He is very easy to listen to and his classes are never boring, typically a quiz at the beginning, going over homework, and then a short culture lesson. His love for the language and culture is awesome to see and he reminds me of Master Oogway from Kung fu Panda. Overall great professor and great guy - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1412 - Dr. Spinks is possibly the best Spanish teacher I have ever had the pleasure of taking class with! He is a bit awkward, but he is a very nice guy. He taught me more Spanish in one semester than I ever learned over the course of 2.5 years in high school. He focuses heavy on grammar as well as writing and speaking! He marks off on tests for every little thing missed, but don't worry too much, it's like 0.1 point for accent marks and what not. Be prepared to have a quiz every day before class officially begins. He assigns homework (usually consists of vocab and a page or two of reading) and will quiz you over it the next day, so study these well! They are a decent part of your grade. He also emphasizes repetition and speaking - he will randomly call on students to answer a question he asks (in Spanish, of course) and it is part of your participation grade. He does not heavily rely on the book and in fact, disagrees with it sometimes, but you can tell he has a passion for the Spanish language and culture. Wonderful semester with him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - Dr. Spinks is a fantastic professor, and if you take him for spanish, your proficiency in writing and speaking the language will skyrocket. An A in achievable, but you will have to know your grammar very well. Also, study at least 30 minutes for the quizzes the night before class--you will thank yourself when final grades roll around. He isn't easy, but, if your schedule can handle a tougher (but not insanely hard) class, then he is a must take for truly learning Spanish. Also, he is a great guy who cares about his student's well-being and lives. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - For as musch as I feel like I learned, I can't walk out of 2310 with Spinks and recommend him, even though I got an A. This is because I view his grading style as too harsh and very subjective on the oral assignments. I have never studied so hard for Spanish tests to still average B+'s on them and for oral interviews and presentations to only get 90's. Additionally, many of his quizzes are formatted to trip you up more so than test what you know. He is a fantastic teacher of Spanish, and his format for learning it is the best I've ever had, so I am thankful for that, but I got an A in this class likely due to my lab grade which is 25% of the lecture component. If you care more about learning than getting an A, I'd take Spinks. If you're like me, and care more about the A as you need it for your GPA for grad school or something, then I would take someone else. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Just awful teacher. socially awkward. avoid him if you can. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2310 - Dr. Spinks is very passionate about Spanish. While Spanish is not my best subject, I learned a lot in this course. There is a fair amount of homework but it is a class that you can succeed in if you are willing to put the time in. There are weekly quizzes (lowest 2 or 3 are dropped), two oral exams (including the final), and three written exams (including the final). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Dr. Spinks is the real MVP. Seriously, take Spinks for 2310... He is definitely the best Spanish teacher I've ever had. He explains verb tenses and how to use them very clearly, which for me is the hardest thing about learning Spanish. He assigns very little homework and does not do a lot of in-class review of concepts, so of course this means you need to study on your own if you want an A. He gives both written and oral exams, which sounds scary but it's really not that bad and I think having to both write and speak helps you learn the language better. At the end of class he always writes all your homework out on the board and tells you exactly what vocab and concepts you need to study for his next quiz. Also, he's a very nice man... he might seem a little intimidating at first, especially if you are nervous about speaking in Spanish, but he's actually a pretty fun and friendly guy. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Oh Scott, Sweet Scott. This man is one of the most bipolar men I have ever met. He is SO passionate about Spanish to the point he will make himself cry if his students don't like spanish as much as he does. But he also is super happy at random times like when we played frisbee and he played guitar at the end of the semester. There are 4 regular tests (I think), 8 chapter quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The midterm and the final are oral and written. The test percentages go up for each test. There is not a lot of outside homework besides 3 activities online usually a few times a week. There is a 7 question quiz everyday but honestly they help for the test and the chapter quizzes. Honestly I know it seems like a lot, but remember you meet every single day and most of it is done in class. He is a nice guy. He genuinely loves this language more than anyone I have ever met and really cares, possibly too much. He values attendance over grades, so show up or he will legit hate you. Either commit to him or choose another professor. And an A is a 90 which is helpful. You will enjoy the course if you enjoy Spanish, but I am not sure if he likes me. I think he doesn't because I miss sometimes. And I mean like 3 times. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Dr. Spinks is a nice man, he was not a great professor. He posted the entire semesters grades the Friday before the final and had no information on your class standing prior to then. By the time I went to study for my final, my grade was pretty decided. His tests are extremely difficult and have vey little forewarning. He does not teach spanish, he relies heavily on "practice makes perfect." He did not prefer the textbook and did not use it very often. Very little online homework, one minute presentations every other week, three exams and two orals. He's not the worst out there but he did not prepare me for 2320. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1412 - Spinks is a great guy and I have learned a ton from his class! I feel like I\\\'m actually learning street Spanish instead of just textbook Spanish. However, his class is a lot of work! You have to study every night because we have daily vocabulary and grammar quizzes which you will completely bomb if you don\\\'t study for 20 mins. His class is very quick paced (just like every other Spanish class), but I know that I am learning from it. He is a funny guy and he makes his class pretty fun some days. You cannot take his class and zone out though. His class is completely interactive and you will be speaking in front of the class every single day. If you\\\'re looking for an easy A, then Spinks isn\\\'t for you. You will have to work hard for your grade, but an A is definitely possible. If you\\\'re looking to truly learn and speak Spanish, take Spinks! He\\\'s the best at doing his job - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2*** - I took Dr. Spinks for Spanish 2, 3, and 4. He's absolutely my favorite professor at Baylor. The entire class is interactive, so it keeps you awake and you lose most of the nerves of speaking in spanish in front of other people after a few weeks. He's a great guy, he's funny and entertaining, and he doesn't take crap from anyone. If you decide to ditch out of class early or you start missing days without contacting him about it, he will talk to you about it. He can be really intimidating, but he's so genuine and caring - he wants to set his students up for success. Don't be too nervous about the oral exams - he was always smiling and happy when I walked in to take it, and would help me out if I forgot a word or phrase. For the orals though, DON'T BE LATE. It really annoys him and he won't be in such a good mood when you get there. Overall, Dr. Spinks was the perfect professor for my personality/style of learning, and I would have picked up a spanish minor had I had more time in my degree program. I'm now fully capable of carrying on some level of conversation in spanish (even though I got B+'s in the classes!) - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2310 - Pretty good teacher if I were you I'd take him I took him for spanish 2 and spanish 3 nd i am taking him again for my last semester of spanish he gives 2 oral exams a midterm and a final. Study VOCABULARY, grammer, verb tenses and you should be fine. If you hate reading in spanish in front of people... to bad, your going to have to anyway and he has this cup that has questions in it in spanish that you have to answer in front of the class and you have to give like 8 or 10 1 1/2 minute speeches in his class but there not hard as long as you memorize what you are going to say. he is very nice and funny sometimes. you probably wont regret taking him i didnt - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2310 - First off, it's a hard class, but it's language at Baylor, what do you expect. Dr. Spinks is a great professor, though. His style of teaching and interactive learning is something I really enjoyed and learned a lot from. Unlike from what I heard about his 1000 level classes, homework was basically for your own edification (definitely do it, though) and definitely wasn't busy work. Everything he did was for a purpose, which I appreciated. The most intimidating part of the class is that 30% of your grade is determined by a midterm test/oral exam and 40% is determined by a final test/oral. Those are the only tests and it's fairly scary, but just study hard and you should do just fine. Quizzes are the worst, on Mondays he gives you a list of around 60 words and you have to know them all plus some grammar stuff for a quiz the next class. Despite the work being intimidating, I'm taking him again for 2320. Dr. Spinks is truly an excellent professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA 1412 - It felt too much like high school. If you like busy work, then take him. I missed the A because I hated doing all of the busy work he assigned even though I did fine on all of the tests. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:SPA 1402 - I never took into account how notoriously hard Baylor Spanish was until I took my first semester of Spanish. I never knew that I would be so overwhelmed. After such a hard first semester, I was really apprehensive of what SPA 1020 would be, but Professor Spinks really made my second semester of Spanish enjoyable. He gave quizzes everyday over vocabulary and a sentence that consisted of what we learned in a section the day before. He's such a mild mannered man who wants you to succeed. He's fair in his grading and takes into account that we are learning Spanish and will make mistakes. I highly recommend him for SPA 1402! By the end of second semester, I was actually enjoying Spanish and doing really well! If you do the work he asks, you will do well in the class! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1402 - I have never written a review about a professor, but I really wanted to take the time to do one for Dr. Spinks. Even though I did get a C in this class, I'm almost positive that if I had any other professor for Spanish I would fail. Spanish was never my strong point. He made a semester of 8ams bearable. He does have quizzes every day, but he tells you what to study at the end of every class. His tests aren't okay as long as you practice translating sentences and memorize vocab thoroughly. If you can take Dr. Spinks, I HIGHLY recommend that you do, even if it's at 8am. You won't regret it. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1412 - His class is pretty routine. Short quiz over vocab and sentence translation at the beginning of every class. In class, you take notes and do some verbal practice of grammar and vocab. Tests are all listening and translating, no multiple choice. The oral exams are pretty easy since he gives you the questions 2 weeks in advance. Approachable professor, but not exactly the warmest. Still, liked him and his style. Take him for 1412 - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA 1412 - DR SPINKS IS SO GREAT. There are so many things I could tell you about how knowledgeable he is with Spanish, how passionate he is about what he teaches, and how he takes his job really seriously (as I believe all profs should) but honestly, there's just really no debate: just take him. You'll learn so much Spanish and you won't regret it. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Dr. Spinks is an incredible professor. I am absolutely terrible at Spanish and I still felt like I accomplished something in the class even though I made a C. He does not give busy work. You have 1 test and the final mixed in with class participation grades, quizzes, 2 oral exams, and a few project/ presentations. He never makes you feel dumb. The tests were hard but I felt like my grade was more well rounded than just my grade. Dr. Spinks is the man and it is clear that he cares about how much you try in his class. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1412 - Dr. Spinks is a chill guy and definately someone you want to have if you're doing Spanish. Knows the language, knows how to explain it, and very approachable. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1412 - TAKE SPINKS! Dr. Spinks is such a nice prof and I am always excited to go to spanish because he makes class so much fun! True, since this is a two semesters in one spanish class it is challenging and there is definitely homework every night, Spinks does not give nearly as much as some of the other professors for 1412. There is a daily quiz that always has some vocab and will test a new grammatical concept you learned about for homework the night prior. Really though, if you have the opportunity, take Dr. Spinks. You won't regret it! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1412 - TAKE SPINKS!!! He is an incredibly nice teacher who knows and loves Spanish. He's incredibly accessible and really wants you to learn Spanish. Also, you know exactly what to expect: quiz every day, a little bit of online homework, and clear cut exams. His class is entertaining, he's engaged and organized. If you get behind, the class can feel like a lot as it is fast paced. But of the 1412 teachers, Spinks is the easiest and the best teacher. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2320 - Dr. Spinks is a really difficult 2320 professor. This class in its own is hard to begin with, it's all literature, like real literature, not beginners stuff, and Spinks takes it very seriously. He's passionate about what he does, so that's good, but he designs the class to be very hard on purpose because that's how he feels it should be. There's reading basically every night, some long, some short, and usually a small vocab quiz or homework assignment due the next class. Each quiz is around 6 words, plus translating a sentence into english that usually has grammatical principles you wont cover until afterwards. There's two compositions (which are the assignments that saved my butt), and only two tests, a mid term and cumulative final. The mid-term was one of the hardest tests Ive taken yet (I had a 3.9 GPA until this semester), out of all the stories you read he'll pick out details, authors, and themes and you're gonna have to be able to name the story. Even though you only quiz over 6 vocab words at a time, you'll be expected to know all 300+ words (maybe 20 will actually be on the test). The entire class period is in Spanish, Spinks is pretty lenient on not being perfect, he's not a native speaker either, but he has high expectations for course work and tests. This is one of the harder classes to take and Spinks knows it. If you want a challenge, take him. If you want an easy A, dont even think about it. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1412 - Spink is by far my favorite teacher that I have ever had. I have never enjoyed Spanish until I took his class. He's nice, funny, and understands that we are not all great at spanish and does not make fun! He is absolutely amazing, if you have a chance to take him take it!! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2310 - He was a really good teacher, not just because I got A but because he really knows how to teach the language. His first language is English so he understands that learning Spanish can be difficult for many students, but his workload is reasonable. His tests can be challenging, but he prepares you adequately. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - The class wasn't as difficult as most people say 2310 is, and I think a large part of that had to do with Dr. Spinks' amazing teaching. There is no busy work, everything is helpful in making students more proficient at conversing in Spanish. I honestly don't know how I got an A either because my grades seemed to reflect a B+, but I guess I did well on the final. You'll have to study for his tests, but his reviews are very helpful. Take him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Spanish - I really enjoyed this class. It was a lot of work and involved studying every day for it. He had quizzes every day but they were not difficult if you knew your vocab and the grammer point he told you to study the night before. It consists of 6 vocab words and a The two oral exams you have to take are not bad and you practice in class. Good prof! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1412 - Spanish 1412 is immensely difficult if for no other reason than it's two semesters crammed tightly into one. I caution you to take it only if you have a solid Spanish background already. Professor Spinx is very friendly and he knows the subject well. He will probably be one of your younger professors, but he is also one of the smartest. He gives daily quizzes in addition to online or written HW 3-4 times a week. There are two oral exams, two regular written exams, and the final. If you want to learn Spanish at a fast pace and will dedicate yourself to doing it, then I happily recommend Scott Spinx. If you are unenthusiastic, a slow learner, or have little background in the language, then I suggest an easier course with an easier teacher. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1402 - Really tough class, but excellent professor. Prof. Spinks is a funny guy and keeps class interesting. If you want to learn Spanish, take his class. Our grade was based off of 2 tests, 2 oral interviews, the final exam, daily quiz grades and homework. We had homework pretty much every night (whether it be written, or just preparing for a quiz the next day), but it was all really helpful, it was never just busy work. Prof. Spinks is a really great teacher and I learned more in his class than I have in any other language class I've ever taken. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2310 - He is a new professor at Baylor this year and he is not that bad. The class is run like this: a quiz everyday with vocabulary and one sentence translation, then either a lecture or sometimes we did in class writing or even speaking in front of the class (prepared speaking and spontaneous speaking). There are only two tests, a midterm and a final, which a difficult but if you know vocabulary and go over the worksheets handed out in class and of course know grammar you will do fine. The oral is composed of questions off of worksheets that we have done in class. So the oral should be no problem. This is a pretty easy class as long as you attend it and know your vocabulary and grammar! - Grade In Class:B+
