Comments:GRK 1301 & 1302 - Dr. Heckenlively is a great professor, and I suggest that you take him if you are looking at Greek. He would like to get on tangents during class about things that are somewhat related to Greek, like the usefulness of being a classics major, the state of Biblical studies, the future of becoming fluent in Greek, Church Fathers, anything. Semester 1 you start out and it is difficult to keep up with learning things. Second semester I feel like is a tad less difficult, but at the end of it you get to read the NT (like the Gospel of Luke) and we also read John Chrysostom's Paschal Homilies. Heckenlively is extremely intelligent and friendly, and he will definitely talk to you in office hours. I recommend him to you!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CLA-2301 - Dr. Heckenlively is an amazing lecturer. He brings much insight and context to the readings. The class is divided into a few sections based on the timeline of Ancient Greek Literature. You will be reading everything from Greek Hymns about the gods, Comedies, Philosophy, Tragedies, Speeches, Historical Accounts, Epics, and more. There is a new reading every day and you are expected to read anywhere from 7 pages to 30 pages in between each class session. There is one weekend in the semester where you must read ~100 pages. The literature in question varies in difficulty. There are some readings, typically the initial ones, which are very easily read while there are others that I found fairly difficult to read and understand. The tests are not difficult if you keep up with the readings. The exams are composed of a multiple-choice section, a vocabulary section, and a free-response section. The vocabulary section gives you ~10 words and you must choose 5 to elaborate on. These are free-response. The Free-response section gives you ~10 excerpts from all your readings of the past few weeks. These readings can be taken from anywhere in the book but are typically form notable sections. You must identify: Author, Year, Title, and then you must elaborate on the excerpt, describe the context, and analyze it if possible. The more you analyze and internalize the excerpt the better your score. Dr. Heckenlively is a very tough grader. Every week you must turn in an essay <600 words in length. The essay must be based on one your readings for that week or for the past week. You can analyze anything from the reading and are not expected to summarize the book or to analyze the book in its entirety. You pick a small section and you talk about it. There is also a paper due at the end of the semester based on the essays you write. It is essentially a larger version of them. You have to buy several books for this class for a total of ~$100 if you buy them from Amazon. You can find slightly different translations free online or you might be able to find them at the library. Overall, the class is very difficult, but I believe that it is very interesting and a great experience overall. I would honestly not be mad if I ended this class with a B or a C because I have learned a lot over my time in this class. I went into here not knowing a single thing about Ancient Greek Literature but have since then learned a lot.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GTX 2301-U3 - Not gonna lie, this class was hell when I took it but I learned so much from Heckenlively that I wouldn't have learned from anyone else. He grades kinda weird though, by 5s which can be super frustrating. He does this really intimidating thing where for the 2 big essays he meets one on one with each of the students in his class and has them read their papers out loud to him and then he grades it right in front of you. The first meeting was super discouraging but it definitely motivated me to improve in my writing and the second meeting had a whole different tone and the paper was a whole letter grade higher than the first. I learned so much from this guy that has helped me in other classes.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:GKC 2320/greek 4 - Greek 4 was very similar to greek 3. The class was structured the same way with 2 tests, a final, and weekly quizzes. However, for the entire semester we only read the odyessy instead of switching between different texts. The class requires a lot of preparation outside of class since he calls on people to translate in class. He is a kind professor and wants you to succeed. This is a very hard class but he grades nicely. He has fun stories and loves loves loves greek. I would recommend taking him for greek!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Greek 3 - Dr.Helkinlively is very nice and understanding! I did not have him for greek 1 and 2, but the transition was not hard. We had quizzes every Monday, and he ended up dropping a few. The exams were fair and he told you what to expect. If you work hard and work on the translations every night, you will do well.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 and 2320 - Having Dr. Heckenlively as my Greek teacher has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Greek is difficult sometimes and mine was beyond terrible. He is very helpful though and the class is enjoyable. There are usually three exams including the final which require you to translate a few passages from your reading. There is usually a quiz every week. You should keep all of them because they can be an easy review later. Do all of the readings and you should hopefully find the class to be as wonderful as I did.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Honors Greek 1 - This is the most challenging class I have ever taken in my life. But, that said, Dr. Heckenlively is an awesome Greek teacher. He knows the material like the back of his hand, and is willing to help you learn the material no matter what. I would recommend this course to anyone. I will be continuing this course, largely because of him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS-Jerusalem and Athens - Dr. Heckenlively is a brilliant man, no question. He is very knowledgeable and invested in his field of study and cares that his students learn and love the material. Dr. Heckenlively's enthusiasm for the material is inspiring, however his expectations are unreasonably high. This course was admittedly the most difficult course of every person enrolled in the class. This was due, in part, to the difficult nature of the subject matter, but also due to the tremendous scope of the material, as well as the volume of the course. Although only three texts were listed in the course material, the course also covered hundreds of other sources posted on blackboard, and the class was expected to print out all of these sources, read them, mark them up, and be prepared not only to discuss them in class, but to remember all of them for the two mid-terms, three papers, and the final. Reflections were due by midnight the night before every class on material not yet introduced, and these reflections were not graded and given back for improvement until it was far too late to bring up any grades. The volume of the course was too great to re-read even a significant portion of the material to review, and this served as a tremendous frustration to all of us throughout the semester; I blew through my print credit within the first month. In retrospect, I’m glad that I took this class; Dr. Heckenlively has a lot to offer regarding patristics and Orthodoxy. Know, however, that you will have to put in hours of work every night to make a good grade in this class, and that it will be nigh impossible to get an A and keep your sanity.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Latin 1301 - Latin is quite a monster when you take it over the summer. Quizzes every day, constant memorization, constant headaches. But Heckenlively mitigates the burden with his intelligent tips and encouraging attitude. Teaching Ability: One of the best I have encountered. He often suggests study methods and memorization skills that improved my learning abilities, like "translating" only the grammar of a sentence first. Availability: Good, even during the summer. Helpfulness: Excellent. He has an expansive knowledge of Roman thought/Roman literature/American Education System. Look above for evaluation. Workload: It's a language. Languages are cumulative and involve much time and attention. Memorize correctly and you will do fine. As Heckenlively puts it, "Practice makes habit." Overall: Excellent Professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Greek 1 and 2 - As I am sure you have heard, Greek is a terrible language to learn. However, if you have to work through Groton's 50 chapter Greek book, Heckenlively is definitely the best. He is genuinely interested that you learn the language and the culture of Ancient Greece. You have weekly quizzes which make you keep up with the material, 3 tests and a final. He writes out long study guides for quizzes and tests which state exactly what will be on it. All tests have some amount of EC and he doesn't take too much off when you make mistakes. If you have good study skills and constantly work on your declensions, you should be fine  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Greek is very hard for me. It's one of those classes that you CANNOT get behind or be lazy in. You will never catch up. His tests aren't easy; you have to memorize a billion little things. Weekly Friday quizzes are annoying, but a grade booster. STUDY!  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1301 - It's Greek. It's hard. But Heckenlively is super nice about it. I will have come in and done none of the translations and he'll call on me and simply walk me through it. He's never condescending and also helpful. Keep up with the translations and you'll do fine. Greek is a hard language, so keep up. There are quizzes ever Friday and 4 exams. Overall, not the worst language class I've taken.  - Grade In Class:C
