Comments:1310 - This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I do not know if I am just simply ill or if this class is terrible. I would rather retake Ochem 1 AND 2 then go though this disaster of a course again. Dr. Garton is a nice man, but his class made me feel as if I lack a brain at all. It is my only C at Baylor. Avoid this class, not braucse of Dr. Garton as a person, but because of the workload and difficulty. Run away young soul. Run.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1310 - Roy Garton's classes are very difficult, and he knows that. On one of the last few days of class he said that he is aware that he has one of the most, if not the most religion class. That being said, I believe that he was a good and extremely passionate teacher, I just would not take him, nor recommend anyone take him. He has weekly quizzes online that gives you two attempts based on the readings. THESE ARE SOLELY BASED ON THE READINGS. However, I did not read past the first couple quizzes because I realized that it is easier just to take the quiz, get the questions, and get the right answers for the next attempt. This also saved me and incredible amount of time. Doing this I got 100 on every quiz. His tests are extremely hard. He gives out study guides that you can fill out, but it really doesn't help out all that much. I would much rather his tests be closed note. The tests are all online and you can print out whatever notes that you like. The only problem is that the pace of the tests are extremely fast and has hyper specific questions. Even with a thoroughly filled out study guide in front of me, I could not decipher the question. However, DEFINITELY DO THE STUDY GUIDE. It takes a crazy long time but it is definitely needed if you want to have any sort of success in the class. He also has essays, but they are pretty easy and grade boosters if you can write well and proof read. I really liked Garton as a person but hated him as a teacher. I only achieved a good grade by learning the teacher, not the information.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - This was my hardest class. Both the subject matter and just having to sit through his lectures made me hate my Tuesdays and Thursdays. The second you walk into the classroom to the second you leave Garton will be talking. The man does not take a break to BREATH. My brain basically gives up about halfway through because it cant focus anymore. He pre-records all his lectures which are extremely helpful and if it wasn't for the attendance policy i would not have gone to class. His only saving grace is you get to use notes on the exams (probably because its impossible to study the sheer amount of information he forces down your throat). The quizzes are weekly and you will have about 20-30 pages to read in order to pass them. There are also two reflection papers he has your write which aren't awful as they are written in first person but Garton is a grammar Nazi and will grade you harder than any English teacher you've ever had. I was really excited to learn about the Bible and some of the material was really interested but because of the speed I was never able to dive into further detail.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL1310 - Lots of reading, but everything was open notes and was relatively straightforward. I would encourage this teacher for those who are not really Christian but are willing to read the Bible. I felt like I learned a lot, but it is a solid amount of work.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL1350 - Okay so Dr. Garton is a nice guy, he answer's emails really quickly but man is this class painful. It's not religion, it's the history of the bible, based on the textbook. So, if you have a question you CANNOT just google it because Google will have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I worked so hard in this class only to get a C+, and I was less than 1 point away from a B and the man did not give it to me, or offer any way to achieve it when I asked (which I do understand). I would say don't take Dr. Garton if you want scriptures to be an easy A as it was my only C all of freshman year. Also - book quizzes are weekly, and if you don't do the reading (MANY PAGES OF READING) you will fail the quizzes. The tests are so hard, so if you take him be prepared to work hard for your grade, as its not impossible to get an A, but as a premed student my priorities were in my math and science courses.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:REL 1310 - This class was not great at all! I would never take it again. He was a very nice person, but the tests were impossible! I went and studied for the tests at least one week in advance and would still fail them or get a C. It felt like they had absolutely nothing to do with the stuff that we learned over the units and that even if I memorized all of the material the highest I would get on a test is a 75. The lectures were a huge pain! he went insanely fast and still claimed that he didn't go over everything. The slides had paragraphs worth of material on each one and you could never get the stuff written down. He neglected to tell my entire class that there were multiple different links to worksheets and data that would help on the tests until after two of the three tests in the entire class. The entire class felt like a huge waste of time and brought a ton of stress and anxiety. I cannot say it enough FIND ANOTHER TEACHER FOR SCRIPTURES!!!!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:REL 1310 - I took this class in-person in Fall 2020 and loved it! Dr. Garton is knowledgeable and helpful. The class is fast-paced and so are the lectures. As a Christian, his class challenged my faith for the better and gave me a greater understanding of the Bible. For Christians, a lot of the material and topics may be shocking or breakdown what you've always known. However, Dr. Garton does a great job of walking through the tough topics with the class and he gives advice on how to handle the shock. We had a reading every week from the Sumney book and a quiz that was based solely on the chapter we read. The quizzes were book-based and the tests were lecture-based. The tests were OPEN NOTE and not cumulative which was nice, plus he provided a study guide for organizing your notes. There were 2 reflection papers within the semester and you can choose from various topics. Those papers weren't difficult but he does care a lot about grammar. I would suggest allowing someone or the UWC to proofread your paper. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this class and looked forward to it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1324 - While I didn't take Garton for Religion, I did take him for BIC 1324. And, I have to say, he is one of my favorite professors. He explains what you did wrong on written assignments and how you can grow. While he teaches it's very clear how much he loves teaching through the excitement in his voice and how he can go on tangents that still somehow relate back to the subject matter. The tests were fair and he gave us a relatively good idea of what to study for. If you have the chance, take Professor Garton. And try to get to know him, as he becomes a lot more fun to learn from if you get to know him better.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Christian Scriptures - On the first day of school my freshman year, I entered Mr. Garton's class. I was very nervous about how the semester would go. However, as a freshman, I was not aware of how easy it is to switch sections on Bear Web, so I thought I would tough it out. Little did I know it would be worse than I thought. The exams never reflected the "study guides" that were distributed a week(ish) before the exams. Sincerely, I have never taken a harder ("hard" doesn't even do it justice. It was too impossible) course in my life. I was so excited to study CHRISTIAN scriptures at a Christian University. However, I came out of the class with NO knowledge whatsoever. The class pace, the condescending tone in which the material was taught, and the obvious lack of care for us actually learning was atrocious and awful. I tried study groups, taking notes multiple ways, going to the tutoring center, and studying weeks before the exams, finals, and starting my papers early. All of these efforts were for nothing because the grading was ridiculous and subjective, and the exams never followed the study guides. I was not expecting this course to be a blow off from any professor, but I did not expect it to TANK my GPA and cause me so much stress, anxiety, and upset. There is so much else I could say. I received a C- in this class. Please avoid this course. Especially if you are a first semester freshman.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1310- Christian Scripture - Let me first begin by saying that I attended Catholic school for 10 years of my life, and I have never experienced the stress and workload that this religion class requires anywhere else. This class was also my only C, and I am a hard worker and care about my grades. Professor Garton teaches the material extremely quickly, but expects you to pick up very specific information that is almost always never specified on the study guide. He suggest studying every day (which I did) to keep the material fresh in your mind, but begin studying for test 10-12 days in advance. I studied HARD for the first test 15 days in advance and got a 52. He also lists terms on his study guides, most of which are in either Hebrew or Greek and had multiple meanings. One thing that is nice are the reflection papers, which are each about 5-6 pages in length and double spaced. He is a sticker for proper college level English, so I would suggest the writing center if you are struggling. I am a Journalism major, and I still couldn't score a high A on either paper. Overall, Professor Garton is perfect for you if you are passionate about the Old Testament, religion overall, or it's your major. I would not suggest him above other professors who I know don't make a required course this difficult.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1310 - Alright. Here’s the thing about Professor Garton, he cares a lot about what he’s teaching and if you want to do well, you NEED to care about what you’re learning. I’ve always cared about my grades, however, this class helped me understand that it’s not enough to just care about how you do. You need to care about the content. In all honesty, I couldn’t get myself to ever read the textbook or scripture. Probably why I didn’t do as well as I usually do in most classes. I had a C+ all semester, only way I pulled off a B was the extra credit quiz at the end and the two reflection papers that are “easily” graded. I use quotations because I ended up getting an 98 and a 100, but my friends got low 80s. He teaches every lesson VERY FAST. If you are confident in your ability to pay attention and study hard dayyyyyyys in advance, take him. He’s a nice guy! Just a very hard class you’re required to take when other Christian scriptures professors are easy.... one of my friends had a cookie party for her scriptures final when we had a 22 page final.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:REL 1310 - I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Garton is a fantastic professor and is incredibly knowledgeable about the Old Testament in particular. His passion for his subject really comes through in lectures and makes class interesting. His PowerPoints and exams are incredibly structured, which is awesome if you're a Type A personality like me. That being said, there is a lot of content and you are expected to memorize minute details. The tests are difficult, but I put in the time to study and did well. He always answers emails quickly but commutes to Baylor so he is not always on campus. Still, a great professor and an interesting class whether or not you have any sort of faith background.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:REL1310 - Dr. Garton is a nice guy. He definitely loves what he does and hes very professional, but because he is so interested in what he's teaching, he teaches WAYYY too much material. the review that I typed up that was based off of his study guide he sent out for the final exam was 22 pages long. TWENTY TWO. he expects you to cover an insane amount of information just for three tests that are 65 multiple-choice/matching. its just way too broad and you're stuck stressing yourself out for days over the tons of info you have only to be tested on super small details on like 1/3 of the information. theres also 2 6-page essays you have to write but they're reflection papers not research so theyre actually not too hard. he's a stickler for proper writing though. good luck <3  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Religion - Back in high school I always had a large workload to do, but this class is on a whole other level. Every lecture is a ton of information that could DEFINITELY be separated into several different lectures, but he'd rather jam them into 50 minutes. However, Prof. Garton is so sweet. He most definitely cares for his students and will usually email relatively fast, however his office hours are by appointment only because he travels from Lancaster. So he will try to help you succeed, but the material is a crazy amount. Also, the test reviews don't make any sense. I studied for 2 weeks straight and I ended up getting a 60 on the test. My other friend's religion professors are the total opposite workload. So moral of the story is to try your very hardest to get a different prof, but if not he will be fine. Just be sure to pay EXTRA attention!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1310 - I absolutley loved Professor Garton! He absolutley loves what he is teaching which gets you excited. The online quizzes are pretty easy, just skim the book and have google open. His tests can be difficult, so just give yourself 3 days to study! He gives you a review guide for every test which is nice and the final is only semi-comprehensive. DO NOT MISS CLASS. There is so much information in one class that i highly recommend not missing class. He talks fast so be ready! He is a really funny guy though and is always willing to help. I actually requested him for 1350 because he was so great, so if you can keep up I recommend him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 & 1350 - I love Professor Garton! He has been one of my favorites since getting to Baylor. I got a C in his class (as I did most of my classes my first semester freshman year) and was on academic probation for my outside scholarship, Prof Garton was willing to be my 'advisor' for the next semester while I took 1350 and was always so willing to help, I recieved a B+ that semester. In class he keeps it somewhat interesting just from his enthusiasm, he gets to talking too fast but is more than willing to slow down if you let him know. He posts the notes on BB. Weekly online quizzes over reading that I either skimmed or googled quickly while taking. Tests could be more difficult but if you listen and take good notes not very difficult at all. He demonstrated a sacrifice in class. Overall definitely one of my favorite professors, he's pretty straight forward from the beginning.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - Please people. Doing a little bit of work isn't going to kill you. I was a B student in high school let me say that as a precursor. He tells you at the beginning of the semester how to do well in his class. Don't cram for the exams. Start studying 2-3 weeks in advance of his exams and you should make at least a B. I made a 97 and 104 on the exams. Online quizzes are so easy that you don't even have to read.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-11-15

Comments:1305 - I've had Garton for both religion courses The course usually consists of weekly online quizes, test 1, midterm, and final, and a project of some sort. For 1305 it was a presentation. What makes people dislike the class is the fact that Garton tests over what he says in class! Period. A little here and there comes from the book, but mostly his lectures. First semester I had a hard time but the second semester I started recording his lectures. The key is listen to the lectures soon after class, make excellent notes and read them often. I did this and made almost a 100 on the final without any freak out cramming.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - I really liked this professor. Due to the terrible ratings, I almost dropped this class, but after a week or two I could see that this class wasn't very hard AT ALL. I am an honors student, but that doesn't make that big of a difference. The quizzes are online so open-notes and are super easy - over the biggest themes in the reading. You don't even have to do all of the reading to answer them. His tests have no writing, and the only difficult portion is the fill-in-the-blank. However, if you complete the review he gives you, all the information he tests over is there. I never made below a 95 on any of his tests and ended up pulling over 100% in the class with the extra credit he gave. The only papers you have to write are two short reflection papers, and all he wants is you to know how to write at a college level and state what you thought and learned. Really easy. And although he does move really fast in class sometimes, a skilled notetaker should have no problems. His power points are SUPERBLY organized, and type-A personalities should love his organization. Just make sure that you ask a question if you don't understand, because he will answer ANY question and never makes you feel bad for not understanding. I loved his class, definitely wasn't the nightmare this site prepared me for. Also, I had very little background knowledge of the stories and history of the Bible and still did this well in the course - it doesn't matter if you haven't ever been to Sunday school or grew up in it. A lot of kids who were raised in the church completely were failing and some of us who weren't were excelling. So don't discount him this class because you feel like you have to have prior knowledge of the material.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Like many others have said Garton's classes are not to be taken lightly, with that being said it is manageable. It literally all boils down to.. you get the grade that you work for. His tests are a mixture of multiple choice, and fill in the blank. They were hard for me but I did not study well for this class. I highly recommend paying close attention and writing down what he physically says, do not fixate on the power points. Much of what he says is not available in the text (or at least in detail) so do not miss it! He is a kind man and is willing to meet and discuss study strategies with you. The reflection papers are straight forward and he does not grade them unreasonably.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2013-01-16

Comments:1310 - Okay honestly, the people who have written previous reviews seem to be talking about a different teacher in certain parts of their review. He is a really nice guy, and his class is a little hard but not impossible. If you ever have any questions, email him and will give a very thorough explanation on the subject. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to the subject, especially the Old Testament. I honestly did not put in the work I needed to. I got an 84 on my first test, in a sense failed the midterm (I later got 8 points added because of the GEC quiz. The quiz is worth 20 possible bonus points which he adds to your lowest test grade. Can be very beneficial) with a 73, and I studied my ass off for his final. I hand wrote the study guide. memorized literally every word I had written down and pulled off a 106, which is what earned me my A in the class. There are online quizzes every week which aren't too bad, since you can use your books and notes. He drops the 2 lowest ones. They are 7 questions each and are timed for 10 minutes. Doing well on these can also significantly help you. Aside from this, there are 2 reflection papers which are not hard to do, but they do take time. It is not hard to pull off an A. As long as you make sense and have decent English, you could probably pull off a 100. He does go a bit fast sometimes so it was a little challenging to keep up with what he was saying. I recommend writing everything down, even his power points, (he advises you not to, since they are later available on blackboard) because most of the questions on his tests come from these power points, and for some reason when he makes his powerpoints, he inserts blanks in certain parts and it is sometimes hard to catch them. you'll see what I'm talking about once you take him. Like I said, he's not a horrible teacher, but I don't think I would take him again, just because of the pace he sometimes goes at. If you have a strong religious background and are pretty knowledgeable in this area, then you should take him. I honestly think I got an A with a mighty load of luck.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-12-27

Comments:1310 - Such a great teacher and nice guy. Unfortunately, he makes the class really really hard. The online quizzes are fine and he grades the reflection papers easy but the exams are almost impossible. It's not an easy A, but he's a great teacher so take him if you're willing to put in the work.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2012-12-14

Comments:1301 - He is a very caring and helpful teacher but his class takes lots of work. His tests are very large and cover a lot of material. If you are wanting a blowoff class, he is not the teacher for you.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-12-05

Comments:1305 - Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Do everything within your power to not have this man. I went to private school for 13 years, grew up in the church, and I am a pastors kid...this material was not easy nor is it a freshman level by any means. I studied for the midterm for 25 hours and only got an 82. If there is no other professor besides him left...wait until another semester to take this. DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2012-11-15

Comments:1310 - TAKE ANOTHER CLASS. Seriously this guy is way out of touch with reality. I am an honors student with a good work ethic and studied the entire week leading up to the midterm. Close to 30 hours of studying. I took good notes and listened to all of his lectures which I had recorded. I still failed. He comes across very bitter and very full of himself. Boasts about having the hardest test. Don't understand why he makes a gen. ed. class like this so difficult, especially since the class is primarily freshmen. Terrible experience, really disheartening to have my GPA damaged by a religion class. Take someone else.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2012-10-28

Comments:Rel 1350 - Although Garton is a good professor and a nice guy I would really avoid taking his class. His tests are impossibly hard, I probably studied 20-25 hours for each one, using the material based off his study guide and still got a D and a C. The questions he asks are random insignificant details that he may have mentioned once during the lecture. The only way I was able to pull off a B in the class was because of the extra credit he gave from the GEC exam.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2012-05-07

Comments:1350 - The course load for this guy is ridiculous. The best advice I can give you is to go ahead and take someone else. I put 2-3 hrs of studying a day and still got a D. All powerpoints with little to no useful information, bring you laptop because he talks too fast and doesn't slow down. Brags about having hard exams, doesn't like to repeat himself calls it "his intellectual property". He's nice, but doesn't understand that we have other courses.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2012-05-07

Comments:Rel 1310 - This class takes work. There is a lot of material covered and he covers it very quickly. There is a lot of reading and a quiz every class. If you take good notes and ask questions at his review sessions, the class gets easier. Once you figure out how he tests, A's are pretty easy to get on his tests.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-04-22

Comments:Heritage - He prides himself on making the hardest test at Baylor. They are nearly impossible to do well on. Studied for 20 hours for both the first test and the midterm and was only able to get a low C. Lots of onlie quizzes which are over an absolute ton of reading(dont think he realizes we have other classes). The group presentation is a saver though. All you do is take notes off extremly un-helpful powerpoints. Nice enough guy but an extremly hard class. Take someone else  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2012-03-28

Comments:1310 - Too many quizzes. Strickly powerpoints. Goes too fast. No essays to write but there are reflection papers which are easy. Doesn't teach material well for those who are unfamiliar with the topic. Take someone else.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2012-03-07

Comments:1310 - Mr. Garton is very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject. However, he seems to forget that we aren't as familiar with the material. The class is very difficult. Lots of reading. He lectures up until the very last minute so don't expect to get out of class early. The tests are challenging and consist of matching, fill in the blank, multiple choice, and an essay question. He usually tells the class what the essay will be and it is actually the easiest part of the test. If you want to take a class to strengthen your faith, Garton isn't for you. He tends to focus on rediculous details and background information. The final is cumulative, worth double, and killer. If you want a chance at an A, don't take Garton.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-12-15

Comments:Rel 1310 - Mr. Garton was a very solid man and knew alot about the bible, especially the old testament. If you have a rather novice knowledge of the bible, he will be very very tough. His tests and quizzes are brutal but the rest of his work is pretty fun and enjoyable. Make sure you show up for every one of the quizzes and do your best because they ultimately shape your grade. Do your best on reflection papers because they bring your grade up significantly. The only grades that brought me down were the tests. Kind of ridiculous fill in the blanks if you ask me. He asks you to basically recreate an entire paragraph from 1 page of notes out of the 100 pages he gives you for the final. Very unreasonable but solid man.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-12-12

Comments:Scriptures -1310 - Very hard class, if your looking for an easy A look elsewhere. Rather heavy reading load, very specific reading quizzes once a week on thursdays for TR class, need to know specific minutia from bible and secondary reading. Power Points are posted after the classes with blanks, so you need to fill those in. 4 tests make up 60 percent of your grade. Exam 1 most people didn't know how to much to prepare so it was a shocker for most. exam two(midterm) was semi-cumulative with a quarter of the test being review from the first test and the other 3 quarters being all the material covered since then. Exam 3 has mean timing in my opinion the tuesday of thanksgiving break, and the professor wont even be on campus to proctor it, non-cumulative meaning only material from after the midterm. Exam 4 fully comprehensive with a quarter from each time from between exams. worth twice the other tests so study had for it. you take 12 quizzes throughout including a G.E.C. , the ten highest quizzes get recorded for 20 % of your grade. the other 20 % comes from two reflection papers each worth ten percent, make sure to use proper grammar and syntax, and get the general gist of the prompt right and you should get a hundred on each of them, prompts are from in class concepts, so pay attention. A large chunk of your grade is indeterminate till the last two weeks with around 45 % of your grade un-scored as of the begining of thanksgiving break you have to be wary. If your serious, take this class else don't bother it will most likely sink your gpa, take one of the large classes instead if its just a requirement for you.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2011-11-17

Comments:1301 - Great professor. Has a tendency to go kinda fast sometimes, but will always slow down/repeat himself and encourages questions/comments. Not an easy A, though. LOTS of material. Posts lectures on Blackboard & no essays. Would DEF take him again.  - Grade In Class:A
