Comments:1300 - What can I say... do not take him. His class lectures are insanely long (some interesting), but the tests were based solely on what he said in class. He does not let you use electronics, he does not post powerpoints on slides, and lastly no study guides for the tests. So basically if you miss something that he says in class you will miss it on the test. I studied long hours for this class. The reflection essays were the most annoying and pointless things I had ever done. They would range from 800-1000 word essays due every Friday. The TA's were not helpful. They were rude and were subjective. Do not take David Smith.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1310 - Professor Smith is the best lecture professor I've ever had. He makes class so interesting and lighthearted. There was never much homework besides 2 book reports which were very easy. Just make sure you start studying weeks before your exams there is a lot of information!!  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1300 - I took history 1300 with him. I thought it would be very simple, but it was an awful class to take with him. If you even miss a single day of notes you are screwed. You only got to talk with the TA as well. There are very few grades to even balance out your overall grade, meaning you have to put your all into the midterm and final. The reading for this class is crazy. Find someone else to take for US history.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:HIS 1300 - I would not recommend taking him. There are only a midterm, final, and two book reports. Basically, you have to be perfect. He doesn't post slides, he rambles, and you can't use a computer so you have to write fast. You can only contact your TA (most of which are extremely biased and grace subjectively). I picked doing good in this class over my mental health and insanely regret it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Dr. Smiths' class single handily tanked my GPA. Avoid him at ALL COSTS. You are graded by two book reports, two midterms, and the final. That's it. The entire class failed his first midterm and it was impossible to raise my grade from that moment on. His lectures are sort of entertaining, but you HAVE to take notes. He does not use slides. The TA's never knew what would be on the exams, so study what they give you but take it with a grain of salt. My TA gave me nothing I actually needed for the final and I ended up failing  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1300 - I don't recommend him. His teaching ability is terrible and he talks quietly sometimes and won't repeat himself. Tests were hard and our only grades were three tests, weekly essays (which he took away because students were using Chat GPT), and two books review (one book being 140 pages and another being 450 pages). You either do really great in this class or really bad. He doesn't upload anything he talks about on Canvas so all you get are the notes you write down in class.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1300 - TAKE THIS MAN. I HAVE NEVER BEEN BORED IN A SINGLE LECTURE ALL YEAR. He is so interesting and engaging and really knows how to teach the material. There are two book reports and two tests that he calls midterms. If you study your notes, you will do completely fine on the tests. They are all short answers though. He does not post ppts or anything so what you study is completely based on what notes you are able to write down from what he is saying. You won't regret taking him!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - Professor Smith is a super interesting dude, he really tries to make sure you grasp the subject at hand. He is honestly a really cool guy and I would recommend taking him for history. The one downside is the class is that it is based on two book reports, two tests, and the exam. He used to have these little essays every Friday but people kept using ChatGPT so he stopped that. The tests can be a little tricky if you don't fully read the question but he never tries to trip you up.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 1300 - Enagaing lecturer but the workload is completely excessive, to book reports in one semester and an 800 word essay every week.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2023-04-23

Comments:1300 - Dr. Smith is a great professor in class. He is very engaging and I personally like going to class. I have learned so much due to him being such a great story teller. However, it is very frustrating that he gives us nothing outside of class. You need to take very diligent notes in class or you will not pass. There are no study guides, powerpoints, or much of anything posted on Canvas. The tests are all fill in the blank and very specific questions.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2023-03-27

Comments:1366 - Dr. Smith's class is extremely engaging. He is an excellent storyteller, and the workload is extremely manageable. There were reflection essays due every week in which he just wanted you to formulate your thoughts about the material. There were also a couple of book review essays, but he is pretty generous in his grading on these. The most difficult part of this class is that there is no powerpoint or notes given. You have to rely entirely on whatever notes you take during class, but if you take solid notes and study hard, the tests are reasonable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - GPA booster, very easy A if you just listen in class. he can be rude at times as he hates computers and phones in his class. he also doesnt give you powerpoints or notes or a textbook so you MUST pay attention in class and speed to write everything he says down because if you ask him to repeat himself he probably wont remember lol. his exams are super easy like a middle school test style ive gotten a 100 on both just by looking over my notes the night before which was roughly about (8 hours tho bc of the content). you have to write two books reports which are annoying but he is a very easy garder however WATCH your spelling and grammar he is a bit an*l when it comes to that and he will call you out on it. you also have to write weekly reflections over the content you learned that week and the instructions are honestly so confusing i still dont understand if im doing it right but ive only ever received anything less than 100 once and the bad thing is that they are due every friday at 5pm instead of 11:59pm. Definitely TAKE HIM  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:History 1300 - Dr. Smith is a very nice man and knows what he's talking about. I enjoyed his class and hearing all of his stories. He is also always willing to answer questions and encourages you to ask! However, this class also made me very frustrated at times. Let me just say, Dr. Smith is extremely disorganized. After the first exam, everyone in the class got their scores within a week but I didn't. I asked him in person and emailed him multiple times asking where my score was, and he said he "misplaced it." (Thankfully he found it later) He is extremely scatterbrained and out of it. Also, since there are no guided notes or powerpoints, just know that you need to write down EVERY SINGLE WORD he says. I wrote down everything, made my own quizlets, asked about the concepts I was unsure on, and I got an A in the class. You'll also have to write an essay about a book he assigns. I really liked the book, it was interesting, but it was very long. Don't save it for the last minute. Try to read a few chapters a day and you will be just fine. Overall, if you like powerpoints and structure, do not take this class. If you want a laid back easy class, I think Dr. Smith is a great option!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I hardly ever write reviews for professors because I dont care that much but I felt compelled to write about how awful this class was for me. Dr. Smith is very disrespectful to students and EXTREMELY arrogant. His class is WAY too difficult for an intro history class. He gives no notes, powerpoints, or literally anything to go off of except his random stories that he tells in class. The only reason I made an A in the class is because I quite literally typed EVERY SINGLE WORD he said in his "lectures" and spent hours studying for the midterm and final. He is very judgemental of his students and assumes that you have outside history knowledge no matter what background you come from. DO NOT TAKE Dr. Smith. I cannot say it enough  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-07-11

Comments:1300 - I do not recommend him because he is very unorganized and never checks his email. He is not considerate of his students and will straight up tell you stories as his form of lectures, and not prepare you at all for the exams or give you any sort of review. His teaching method just was not for me because he never gave us a schedule of what was ahead.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2022-05-13

Comments:1300 - Although Dr. Smith is a great story teller and teacher, he is rude and disrespectful to students that do not share his same political beliefs. He tells and encourages students to share their own beliefs and to think outside the box, but when that happens he shuts students down and is horribly disrespectful to them. The material actually taught in class is extremely biased! If you want to actually learn real history, DO NOT take his class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 1300 - Great storyteller. Study for the exams and you're golden. He also curved me up to an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I love Dr Smith as a person because he is a great storyteller and makes history actually interesting. However, his teaching style just doesn't work with me because he only gives 2 exams, the midterm and final and they're based solely on his lectures. He doesn't post anything anywhere so you need to take good notes in class. If you do bad on the midterm in this class, it's hard to make up from it because there's nothing else he gives you that weighs enough to bring your grade up. He also won't reply to your email if he thinks it's not worth replying to. Love the guy though, just not his class.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1300 - Mr. Smith is a good teacher with really interesting lectures. There are only a few assignments, so just make sure to study hard for midterm. Would def recommend!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-11-11

Comments:1300 - I only have such a low grade because I kept forgetting to do assignments! Full disclosure, I wanted to drop his class at first, but I'm so glad I stuck around because he made it so interesting!  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:HIS 1300 - Take Dr. Smith!!!!! I have never rated a professor on here but I made an account and everything just to rate Dr. Smith. I really enjoyed this class, it even made me decide to declare a history minor just so I could take more of his classes. His lectures are so engaging and interesting. Though he does not really make lecture slides, he more so just talks and tells a story, which does not make for organized note taking if that is something you need. The only grades in this class were a reflection essays every other week about anything you wanted to talk about, and weekly 10 question quizzes that he only started doing so we did not have to take a midterm. I never had to study for this class, just show up, be engaged, and ask questions if you need them! He is so helpful and wants the make sure his students understand the material!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - I think Dr. Smith is one of the best professors I've ever had at Baylor, and at the very least, he is the best history professor I've ever had. The class was online, which kind of sucked, but he still designed the lectures to be interesting to listen to. He included special effects and sound effects when he was talking, and he grabbed your attention from the get-go, as if he were your grandpa and he was telling you a story of history while you sat on the porch, drinking a soda in the middle of summer while the sun set. It was an entire vibe. Point is, if you can take this professor, regardless of which class, it would be in your best interest to bend over backwards trying to get him. He is an excellent professor and grades fairly. His tests and quizzes, unlike most history classes, are all multiple choice instead of essay. He did make us read a book that didn't follow our curriculum completely, but it opened our eyes to a different area of history that he did not have much time to teach us – we had to write a book report on it, but it wasn't too bad. The only downside to his class, I'd say, was he would spend too much time in the 1800s and the early 1900s and we weren't really able to begin to break the surface of World War II, talk about the Korean or Vietnam Wars, or go into the Civil Rights Movement as much as I would have liked. But he does teach you things that you never would have learned in high school, and they're very interesting.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2370 - He is a great storyteller in class but he is pretty messy.Different assignments are not weighted in his syllabus so you only have a loose idea of your grade heading to the Finals.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:HISTORY 2366 - Professor Smith's online lectures were absolutely AMAZING!! It truly did feel like story time, and the longest they went were 45 minutes. There were 10 multiple choice quizzes (which were pretty easy if you paid attention and took notes), 1 10 page paper over a fascinating book, and a multiple choice cumulative final. The syllabus was very vague and everything about the class felt up in the air. It listed a midterm, which we were informed over halfway through the semester wasn't going to be happening. Besides the frustrating lack of communication, this was a very interesting class and it was obvious that Dr. Smith is passionate about history.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2366 online - Dr. Smith is a great professor. I am in the asynchronous section and I thoroughly enjoy it. He posts Discussion board videos and you watch each one and post a question. He includes music and sound effects and makes them very entertaining. The quizzes are straightforward and there is also a book report due at the end of the semester. Would definitely take his class again!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-10-29

Comments:HIS 1300 - Dr. Smith definitely knows what he's talking about! I took him over the summer during COVID and the workload seemed like a lot at first, but it was definitely doable. I am not a History geek and I am not a fan of history, but I did enjoy learning from him. He made history bearable. The way he presented the material was very straightforward and he never tried to trick us with his questions on quizzes. His grading comments/critiques are very blunt. If he doesn't agree with you, he says it, and if you did something wrong, he points it out. Other than that, he was great! I would recommend him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - He is the best professor that I’ve had at Baylor. A normal day in his class is just sitting down, getting out your pen and paper, and listening to him tell a story. You pretty much just take notes off of his lectures which is not a hard thing to do at all. He makes history so much fun and is an easy grader on essays. I went through my notes once right before the exam and did well. His tests are all free response, but if you pay attention in class and go over your notes, you’ll do great! This is not a hard class at all and those who did poorly in his class just simply didn’t pay attention.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1300 - I seem to be the only person that absolutely can not stand this fucking guy. He teaches ONLY off of lectures, no powerpoint or anything, he just talks. His tests are all short answer and he counts off for the dumbest shit. i wrote a paragraph answer on one question when he asked what is___. and i got -5 for not saying where. since the classes moved online he has gotten 10x worse. he uploads about 5 lectures a week and on weekends, makes us write an essay every week describing the previous weeks lectures but makes sure to take any chance to tell us it is too much of a summary... like what else does he want? He is rude and has called me out in class asking if I "have EVEN bought the required books yet" and i replied yes and he continued with "well do you know where they are" as a pre med with a 3.8 GPA, yes i did know where my books were and I would very much like to throw them at his face as hard as possible. Thank you for coming to my TED talk  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1300 - TAKE DR.SMITH!!!! I cannot say enough good things about him. The class is so engaging and entertaining. He is quite a character so you're never bored. His exams are pretty difficult if you don't pay attention in class. There is NO work basically. He gives you 2 books throughout the semester and all you have to do is read it on your own time and write a paper on them. This guy is so funny and really wants you to succeed. I liked him so much that I took him again the next semester! I might even take him again next semester even though I don't need any more history credits!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2366 - WOW! There are not enough good words to say about Professor Smith. Every class was a story, and he kept my interest the entire time. He made what I thought would be boring topics into something that I was very interested in and still remember to this day. I never had a good history professor, and he highly exceeded my expectations. He was helpful, encouraging, and such a remarkable teacher! There are a few essays and tests that you are guaranteed to do good on if you read the material and study your notes after class. Some days he would bring us coffee to class and take about 15 minutes to talk about how our days were going. If there is any professor that needs a raise, it’s Professor Smith! I never enjoyed history, so I was anxious about taking the class, and by the end of the semester he made me want to consider a history minor because of how engaging and interesting he made each class. He made 8AM’s fun and exciting! His test are a mix of true& false and short answer, but very straightforward if you listen, take good notes, and study the material! It truly did not feel like studying when I prepped for his tests. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2020-01-03

Comments:HIS 1300 - I enjoyed this class very much due to Mr. Smith's animated teaching style. One thing I found annoying was that he did have powerpoints or any sort of lecture notes, so different sections stopped in different places everyday which made it difficult for him to create the final. He was a little lazy in that regard and he also never entered grades into canvas. You get all your tests and papers back, but he doesn't enter grades. If you study your notes and ask questions in class, it will be easy and fun.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2019-12-22

Comments:HIS1300 - (The US in Global Perspectives) - Dr. Smith is a really good professor. He is REALLY knowledgeable about history. He doesn't use powerpoints he just talks. If that throws you off maybe pick someone else but I really liked it. He always wanted to make sure we understood and got something out of the class. We had 2 midterms and the final. We also wrote 2 essays over the assigned reading books. There is no textbook. For tests, he gives no outline of what will be on it so you just have to read over your notes. Our first 2 midterms were completely free response and then the final was all multiple choice. There was never any homework other than studying and reading. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend him but I could understand how his teaching style might not be for everyone.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-12-19

Comments:HIS 2366 - Dr. Smith’s class has almost no workload with the only assignments being 2 tests (all free response questions), 1 paper, and the final. You do have to read 3 books of his choosing, which will be on the tests, but he assigned such loose deadlines that we never even got to the third book (yet it was still on the final). He doesn’t use a textbook or powerpoints, just simply “tells stories” in which you get all your notes from. So although he doesn’t take attendance, if you miss even one class period you’ll have a large gap in your notes. While I liked his teaching style, Dr. Smith can be incredibly condescending and degrading towards his students. I went in to talk to him about my test grade/how to answer the questions better and he told me if I wanted to get more questions right, I needed to “just write the correct answer”. When the class asked if he would create an extra credit assignment before the final he told us “you should’ve done better on the tests if you wanted a higher grade.” If you can find another professor for this course, I’d take them. If you end up with Dr. Smith just know while you luck out with no homework, attendance, or participation points, you’ll be treated with little to no respect the entire semester.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:HIS 2366 - Take Dr. Smith for 2000 level courses, don't take him for upper level courses. In the survey classes Dr. Smith runs a good class. He tells a story and writes key terms on the board. If you show up every day and take notes you'll be perfectly fine. But as others have said, even missing one class can leave some pretty big gaps in knowledge. Plus Dr. Smith can be condescending at times to students. But his tests are fairly straightforward and the workload is perfectly reasonable. That said, my experience with Dr. Smith in a 4000 level Military History class was downright awful. He expects a lot of knowledge from you going in and the class has no consistency as it bounces between discussion, powerpoint, to storytelling. With several books to read it can also be incredibly easy to fall behind as you simply don't know where you should be. Sticking with his system of midterm, final, paper, and one extra grade means that any slip up can really cost you. He's a nice guy, but incredibly disorganized. Class constantly got off the set course and us students are the ones who pay for it. As much as I recommend Smith for a lower level class I do not recommend him for an upper level class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-10

Comments:2366 - If you are required to take History, I would recommend Dr. Smith. No professor or class is perfect, but his comes pretty close. My experience is that he's the best in the department. His classes fill up quickly but wait to take him if you can. He lectures every day with a style similar to storytelling. With no PowerPoint slides or textbook, it is vital that you attend class which is a drawback. Even missing 2-3 classes over the entire semester will leave you with gaps in your knowledge. Keep in mind there are only 2 exams, 1 final, and 1 paper. This makes the workload very light, but a low score on any of the FOUR assignments will drop your total average significantly. I would say it is challenging to earn an A for this reason. He does not tend to give extra credit so you really need to be prepared for the exams, which are 100% short answer. Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Smith's class because he is funny and I genuinely learned a great deal about American History.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-05-11

Comments:2366 - Please for the love of God do yourself a favor and choose him as your professor! David Smith is in my top 3 professors at Baylor for a reason. He is such a funny and laid back guy that you can't not love him just from those reasons alone. His class is fairly easy (US History after 1877) with only 4 books to read and no homework. There are two tests and the final. Class consists of you taking notes and listening to him lecture, that may sound boring but the way he lectures is incredible, it's like listening to your grandfather tell you stories from back in the day. It's never a boring class. The tests are easy as long as you study your notes, there really aren't any hard concepts to grasp. I could praise him so much more but I'll keep it short. Take him! You won't regret it!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:HIS 2365 - Professor Smith is an amazing story teller. His class will keep you engaged the whole time. Take notes like crazy. You cannot miss class if you want an A. The test are short answer/essay combo and the final is multiple choice. There are 2 or 3 papers over books you read outside of class. This is amazing class where you will actually learn.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-02-20

Comments:HIST 2365 - Dr. Smith is an excellent educator. I would recommend him for any class, he is funny, interesting, and a great story-teller. I learned more about history from his class than the entirety of my public school education. He teaches history like a story. Incredible man overall. However DO NOT underestimate the difficulty of his exams. They are short answer, there's just a lot of material he covers. I took notes every day, only missed class once the entire semester, and still had a difficult time recalling certain details of historical events on the tests. Even if this intimidates you, I would recommend taking his course for the experience alone.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:US History Since 1877 - My favorite class and my favorite professor that I have had at Baylor so far. He is hilarious, and he makes lectures feel like storytime. You need to stay on top of the reading, because he assigns books that don't have chapter summaries anywhere to be found on the internet. If you finish the books, you'll get an A on the papers. For notes, you have to write down what he says, because that will be exactly what is on the test. Do not miss any lectures (You won't want to anyways)  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-11-17

Comments:2366 - He definitely makes class really interesting for history, especially with his style: so entertaining and very interesting. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Just 3 tests in the semester, but he is very relaxed about those, too. You have a ton of flexibility with papers, which is nice, since most people already know some of the material and so you can customize with his setup. HIs class is basically all lecture. Absences are a bad idea. If you must miss class, get notes from someone and make sure you know them well. Tests are easy to study for if you took good notes. There was barely any homework, just reading and some extra credit, but you mostly just need to pay attention to what he’s saying, which is easy, because he tells stories really well. For the essays, let him know that you read the books, and throw in a little analysis of your own. He doesn’t always grade and return stuff right away, but he’s a fair grader, so you shouldn’t have to worry about anything if you put in a halfway decent effort. He loves students who engage in discussion and joke around with him, and is happy to chat with anyone and everyone after class, especially if you want more details about what he covered in lecture. If I ever take anymore history classes, I will wait until I see a spot in his class. Probably the best professor in the department, and definitely the guy you want to knock out your requirements.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - Dr. Smith, is by far the best professor I have ever had. He makes history interesting and captivating, and is one of the smartest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His class is not hard if you're good at taking notes. There is no powerpoint, notes, or hardly a syllabus, but he lectures what you need to know and he expects you to make your own study guide. I loved his class, but at first I sat in the back of the room and paid little attention, which came back to get me when I bombed his first test. His heavier weighted second and third tests made up for that, and I still made an A in the class. Whether you are a history major or not, definitely do not pass up an opportunity to listen to Dr. Smith speak. Truly intelligent and inspiring.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - I never do rating but Dr. Smith definitely deserves one. He is by far the best teacher I have had my in my educational life. He gives his lectures as if he is telling you an incredible story. He is truly a funny guy and really makes coming to an 8 a.m. worth it. One time he randomly decided he wanted coffee in the middle of a lecture and decided to bring the pot for anyone else who wanted any. By far the best teacher at Baylor. He gives you three exams one final all accumulative. He also requires you read 4 books and write a paper over the books. Other than that there is no homework or quizzes. He does expect 100% effort from all his students but in the long run you want him to respect and like you so you end up working hard to impress him anyways! I HIGHLY SUGGEST EVERY STUDENT TAKE HIM!!! He is the bomb.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:FYS 1399 - This was an honors seminar class about Modernism, so it had a very different structure from Dr. Smith's other classes. The entire course was discussion based on readings with short weekly written responses. We also had a 6-page paper and a take-home midterm and final. Dr. Smith always spurred discussion in an interesting way while being encouraging and available to students. However, grades were always a mystery in this class and expectations were not always made clear. All in all, he's a great guy and cared about getting to know us as students and helping us learn.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Hist of Am. Pres - I honestly have no idea how I got an A. I hardly did any studying for both the midterm and final, and put very little effort into my take home test (which was an essay). I attended most of the classes, but hardly paid attention. I feel like he's just an easy grader. He provided a syllabus with NO dates/assignments and did NOT specify what our assignments would be, or when they were due. He literally decides when to test you a week before he hands out the exam, so DONT miss class because if you do, you'll miss that announcement. I noticed that he tended to lecture to people in his class that he's already had before...so that was a bit bothersome. I didn't find him that entertaining, or his lectures interesting at all -- they were all over the place since he doesnt prepare much for them. Basically, if youre the kind of student who enjoys structure and always knowing what to expect, DONT take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2365 - Okay, here's the deal. Dr. Smith is an awesome lecturer and professor. He always knows how to make history exciting. BUT do not underestimate the difficulty of his class. His tests are really specific and he has no visual aid or anything, he just gets up in front of the room and talks. So you HAVE to go to every lecture, and if you don't, you miss a huge chunk of information. So basically if you want an exciting lecturer, Smith is your guy. But I've also take one of the more "boring" history professors and found the class a lot less difficult.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2366 - Dr. Smith is one of my favorite professors at Baylor. He has a very dry sense of humor and he incorporates it into his lectures to keep them entertaining as well as educational. There is no textbook and virtually no homework. 3 novels to read for 2 essays, 2-3 exams and a final. He is very smart, witty and willing to help you out. Definitely take him (if you can get into his class!)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4340- US Military History - US Military History is one of those few classes that doesn’t feel like work. Everyone in the class was friendly and genuinely happy to be there every day. Why? Everyone was always happy because Dr. David Smith made the class great. The professor basically comes into class and starts talking. He rambles, he tells jokes, and he teaches history by lecturing for 50 minutes straight. Sit back, take notes, and enjoy the show. Smith has so many memorable quotes that I wrote down a “quote of the day.” Some samples are “I imagine War Horse as a cross between Saving Private Ryan and Old Yeller.” “The French are Andrew Jackson-level grudge-carriers.” “If someone asks you to do something and you say ‘Why not?’ there are probably MANY reasons ‘why not’ to do it. Don’t do it!” There are two books to read, one midterm to take (8 identifications that are about a half page each), a term paper (10 pages), and a take home final (9 pages). The only criticisms I have of Smith are these: he is disorganized, doesn’t stick to the syllabus, and does not grade in a timely manner. Take this class. You won’t regret it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - oh Dr. Smith... He knows his history VERY well. The class consists of 2 exams (short answer), 2 novels (read outside of class), quizzes over the novels, and a final exam. There are no reviews but he lectures as if he is telling a story. If you pay attention and take down good notes you should be fine. One of the novels we had to read was outrageous. The whole class complained about it and basically one of our quizzes was to explain why it was a bad novel and what we got out from it. At the end of the semester he curved the final and took our 2 highest quiz grades. Overall, i liked him as a professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2365 - Dr. Smith is the single reason that I changed my major to History to someday be a history professor myself. His teaching ability is the best I've seen in ANY class at Baylor. His ability to lecture by telling history as a story is perhaps his best quality. I found myself feeling sad when he would cancel class because I loved his class so much. As far as the work load goes, don't wait til the last minute to read the assigned books because he WILL be able to tell if you've read it or not. Luckily, the books are pretty interesting. His tests are a breeze if you know the material. When studying for his tests, don't cram and memorize a bunch of facts in your head, but rather read your notes like they are a story and you're trying to connect all the parts together. I hate to do this part but the ONE negative thing about Dr. Smith is that he is VERY hard to get ahold of or meet with. I emailed him three consecutive times to try and meet with him outside of class and 2 of those times he didn't email me back and the third time we talked about meeting, he said he would get back to me with a time, and he never did. Overall, TAKE HIM!!! You will not regret it. Best class I've had at Baylor yet by far.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:His of US pre and post 18 - Professor Smith like most have said has an awesome class! The way he lectures is by telling you a story of what happened, you just sit there and listen as he takes you on this journey through history! I loved both of his classes for this very reason. There is no homework except for some books that he assigns and if you ask as a class he will push the date back on when they are due. He really just wants you to walk out learning something from his class. He isn't a fan of tests or essays so when he assigns them just show that you learned something. Tests can be essay or multiple choice, study what you wrote down in class. Like most classes it isn't hard if you pay attention. He won't force you to come to class, but you miss a lot of information if you miss class so make sure you meet someone who you can share notes with. He covers everything he lectures about eventually on some test. Great professor would recommend for any class he teaches!! You will enjoy his class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2365 - Dr. Smith is a great teacher. His lectures are some of the most interesting I've ever had. Its basically just like story time for every class. He does have four books thta you have to read, which is pretty time consuming. You also have to write two essays, but they're not that hard. His tests are all short answer but not too hard either. Just take good notes and read the books and you'll do fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - Dr. Smith is great. Workload is nonexistent, just have to read a few books that are interesting and go to class. Take good notes and study them and you will be fine. Hist tests are easy if you took good notes. He knows the material super well and will lecture like he is telling a story, his class always went by really fast.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2365 - Dr. Smith is a fantastic lecturer, but his organizational skills could certainly use some work. I never got bored in class and was often surprised that it was already time to go. He loves students who engage in discussion and joke around with him. He never scheduled when the tests were, and just told us a week before, and he scheduled two, four page book reviews after thanksgiving that would be due in the weeks surrounding finals. He said that in the future he would try not to do that to his students because it really sucked. If you can get over his lack of organization, he is an amazing professor, and you will learn so much from him. I highly recommend him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2366 - Dr. Smith definitely knows what he is talking about. I liked this class. However he is a bit unorganized and it makes it somewhat difficult. We were suppose to take 5 quizzes and we only took 2.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:2366 - I love this professor. I have had him twice and wish I could have him again. He's nice, funny, has a brilliant teaching method, and can keep ANYONE awake. We have a few outside reading books, all of which are very interesting, and instead of papers he does quizzes now. But if you do the reading and take notes in class (which is easy to do with the way he tells a story instead of lectures) you can not fail. Also, know your Amendments. He likes the Constitution, so the Amendments will show up on your test if he talks about them in class. It's nothing hard, though. Take this professor!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - I took Dr. Smith for 2365 and 2366. He is AWESOME! Extremely brilliant and his lectures are so interesting I almost changed my major to history. Take good notes (seriously, write down everything). Tests are easy if you know your notes. There are four books he assigns to read and they are all actually pretty good. All you have to do with the books is write 2 papers on them, which he grades very easy. Take this guy, you won't regret it.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2365 - I loved this class! Dr. Smith just stands up and tells a story everyday. He really wants you to learn the material, but he makes class so much fun, that it is hard to forget. You have 2 tests, the final, and you have to write 2 papers over books he assigned. The work load is incredibly easy, as are his tests. I cannot recommend this class enough. Everyone needs to take it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2365 - AWESOME class! By far my favorite prof at Baylor. Makes history really interesting and is absolutely hilarious. Knows his history really well. Class is all lectures so TAKE GOOD NOTES. Study your notes for the tests, which are mostly short answer/mult choice. Four easy books to read and a couple essays that he grades very leniently. Highly recommend, a class worth taking.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3360 Hist. of Amer. Prez - No exaggeration, this guy was my favorite professor so far at Baylor. The way he lectured was like no one else I had taken before. If its possible, I would say he makes you actually enjoy taking notes on him. He tends to make up crazy words to try to explain what he's thinking, which only adds to his humor. He is very disorganized, but never lets it affect his students. Class was cancelled a good bit. His tests were straightforward essays, and his final was a bunch of open-ended short answer. The only other grade was an essay over basically everything you had learned in the class. Very enjoyable professor, his humor is rather dry but hysterical nonetheless. Take this guy if you ever get the privilege.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - Dr. Smith is by far the best history teacher I have ever had. The class is all lecture, but he finds ways to make it interesting. He is hilarious and was always cracking the class up. There are 4 books to read, and 2 papers to write that are not that bad if you do not wait until the last minute. The tests are easy if you take good notes and go over them. I HIGHLY reccomend him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2365 - This was a great class with a great professor! He so far has been my favorite professor at Baylor. There was 2 papers, a couple quizzes, midterm and final. The only reason I got a B+ was because I did not do the required readings and didn't do so hot on the quizzes and essays. Otherwise he was a great professor!   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2365 - Dr. Smith is my favorite professor at Baylor. He lectures like he is telling a story (which history is). I have decided, after taking his course, to minor in history. I am going to take every class possible of his. Take his class for history!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 4374 - Dr. Smith is a great lecturer and he definitely knows his material. However, he is extremely disorganized, so if that bothers you don't take this class. The only real grades we had were exams (multiple choice, short answer, essay) and a paper, as he sort of just threw out some other things he originally planned on doing. If you pay attention and learn the material, you'll make an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:U.S. History after 1877 - Dr. Smith is the best History teacher I’ve ever had! I learned so much this year. He makes the subject matter so interesting so I never got bored. He is really passionate about history and is cute with his little sweater vests. He pretty much just nonchalantly walks into the class and starts talking. He tells you stories about history that you’ve never heard before and he makes you feel as if you are there experiencing history itself. You should take really good note because that is all you have to study for the tests. Also, DO NOT SKIP CLASS! That will hurt your grade because you need those notes. There are only 2 midterms (multiple choice & short answer), easy if you study the notes and pay attention in class. Write as much as you know on the short answers because if you write the bare minimum you might not get credit. There are also 2 papers, which are over 2 novels each that are all good books. I didn’t even finish any of the books and I still got A’s on both papers. The final is comprehensive but if you just study your notes from the whole semester you will be fine. Pretty easy class as far as history is concerned. I love Dr. Smith!! DO NOT take an other history prof besides him!   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - Dr. Smith is a great teacher. His lectures are basically one giant story-telling. This semester he had a mid-term and a fianl and 2 papers. The papers are not bad at all. Stay attentive or at least act like you're paying attention and you should do fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-05-20

Comments:HIS 1307 - Dr. Smith is probably the coolest professor at Baylor. I actually enjoyed going to his class; his lectures were really interesting. You only have two tests, which are based entirely off lectures and some of the readings. (There were four books which average them all together were about 300 pages a book). You have to write essays over the books which also factors into your grade. The only problem I had with the class is our last two four-page essays were due a day before the grades were due for the semester. So we didn't get to see what we made on the essays, and I have no idea how he graded all those essays in one day, even if he did. Either way, I still highly recommend Dr. Smith.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-12-29

Comments:1307 - I thought he was a slightly difficutly teacher because he assigned essays but gave absolutely no topic. He really doesn't follow a lesson plan because on the novels the just says due by the end of the semester and that's it because you aren't quizzed on them or anything. If you want a teacher who gives explanations then try someone else.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-06-22

Comments:2366 - Dr. Smith knows a great deal about the subject matter, and he tends to hit on stories that express the national sentiment at that very time period. He's big on speaking succinctly. While there are events in US history that everyone knows about, Dr. Smith tells history as if he were there and lived through it all. His class was refreshing to sit through. Absences are a bad idea. If you must miss class, get notes from someone and make sure you know them well. Tests are easy to study for if you took good notes. The papers are generally easy. Let him know that you read the books, and throw in a little analysis of your own. Dr. Smith is a great guy, and I plan on taking another one of his classes for my other history credit. If you can get into a class he's teaching, do it--especially if you enjoy history.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2365 - Awesome teacher. Cares passionately about history and is extremely helpful if you have any questions. He is a little strange and tries to crack lame jokes in class. No power point, he simply gets up and starts talking but he makes history like a prolonged story. DO NOT take his 8'clock class because u do take a lot of note. Be prepared for 3 essays that arent incredibly hard and he grades prety easy. Definitely take him if u like history or even if you dont  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:SW1 - Dr. Smith is a very nice man, but is often unavailable and it can be difficult to track him down. He's also very disorganized, which can cause problems when you're taking a class as intense as Social World. The other SW professors are very demanding, whereas Smith is very relaxed. However, this causes problems on the exams because he does NOT teach students the material that they need to know. He also does not collect many study questions which count for 40% of your grade, so if you mess up at all, you're in trouble. To the Social World Students: take another professor. In the end, it will be worth it.   - Grade In Class:B

His lectures on history are super interesting - he tells history as a story, not just dry, boring facts. In philosophy, his discussion-based classes were interesting, and he made a point to involve everyone's opinions without letting the class get too sidetracked. I took Dr. Smith for Social World I and liked him so much that I signed up for his World Cultures IV section the following semester. His test are a direct result of what he teaches. As for the papers...if you read the book and write what he asks of you, then you will do awesome. He'll write a few topics on the board, and just talk about them the whole time and you never get bored. He is so intelligent and likes to throw in corny jokes alot, and he'll spend any amount of time on a subject until everyone understands. He learned all of our names first thing which is a nice touch to the class. The tests weren't very hard if you take notes in class. There are a few quizzes, but he gives you fair warning. We also had to write 3 papers about 3 books we read, but it wasn't that hard. The class was by far one of my favorites, and I'm taking him again next semester.
