Comments:1455 - As expected, pretty easy and attractive choice if you’re a non-science student who needs a lab science credit. He’s very nice and by now, has come to know his crowd quite well, which is a lot of business/other majors that are there for an easy A and know they can use his class as a study hall to complete other things. Thankfully, he does not mind that and doesn’t try to ban technology or anything, which works out because you quite frankly don’t need to pay much attention as long as you trust your ability to cram the week of the exam. This is especially true for one of the exams where he picks from a question bank that students make, so you have access to all of the possible questions and their answers before the exam that you can simply memorize. If you’re so inclined, you can probably get away with never even attending the class (except for tests) as long as you have someone that can sign your name on the piece of paper at the end and are willing to study a Quizlet or two come test time.
For the structure, it is very straightforward where he gives a normal lecture every class until the exam. There is a giant projector that has the slideshow and the only thing he provides is a jumbled mess of topics that will be on the exam for each unit that he posts on Canvas. It might be helpful to throw them in a Word doc and take notes for each one, but I haven’t found that too necessary. There are 4 exams that are worth 10% each, along with a 20% final, but the lowest one is dropped. After that, there is rare (maybe once a month) online homework that’s worth 15%, while the corresponding lab section is worth 20%.
Overall, a very relaxed, run of the mill option for anyone who needs a science credit, but doesn’t want to put in much effort. - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:1455 - Dr. Russell's Astronomy class should be one of the easiest classes you can take at Baylor. He requires absolutely no homework other than simply studying for the tests. Russell does an exceptional job of communicating what he expects his students to know for the tests. Another pro is that there is no required text book for the course, so it is a free class! All of his tests are multiple choice scantron style tests with an occasional true/false question. He has four tests and a final throughout the semester. Out of the four tests, he only counts the three best ones. So, if you do well on the first three, you can easily just skip the last one. Everyone is still required to take the final though. He also requires his students to take quizzes with the "clickers" in class, though many of them count only for participation points. Unfortunately, Russell is very scattered when he teaches. His lectures are often hard to understand, and he has a tendency to jump around from point to point with no apparent progression. Additionally, he isn't always all that helpful outside of class. On multiple occasions, I had to contact him regarding a grade that had been entered incorrectly into BlackBoard and his response was often late or non-existent. This is understandable considering that there are 300 students in this class. Lastly, the labs are a bit of a pain to attend every week, but it is a very easy way to improve your grade and gain one more credit hour. All of this being said, I would recommend taking Russell if you need to gain a few more credit hours or if you are a student that needs to fulfill a science requirement. This class is not difficult, and Russell can be extremely funny in class (although his sense of humor is very dry). - Grade In Class:A |

Comments:astronomy - i'm actually still in the class right now, but struggling. i'm an english major and math and science are pretty much my worst enemies, so i asked my academic mentor to put me in the easiest science there is, but that lady freakin lied to me! astronomy is pretty tough if your not a science person. if you are, i can kinda see how it'd be easier, but it's a hard class. so far, i've bombed the first 2 tests, but my lab grades are saving me. there's not really alot of work to do, but the test are insanely hard and the little review quizes he gives in class before tests don't give you a good idea at all about what is going to be on the tests. as a teacher, though, i've got to admit that Dr. Russel is a pretty awesome guy- he just happens to be teaching a really hard class. - Grade In Class:D |
