*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:3300 - Every class Prof. Hruska teaches is absolutely fascinating. While teaching the language, she also teaches Russian culture incredibly well and in such a way that you learn the language while also learning the culture. Prof. Hruska is a food scholar and absolutely loves teaching about food and the cultural significance of food. I have had many incredibly insightful conversations with her. She genuinely cares for every student, if you don’t feel well in class, she takes care of you, if you have a really heavy workload that week, she will move around deadlines for you. Each class and each lesson is uniquely interesting. She strives to know students individually and will tailor lessons to fit student interests. She also knows so much history, and you can seemingly pick her brain endlessly for this knowledge. Her style of testing is mainly project based, which I personally think assesses what you have learned better than traditional testing. She wants you to be creative and make your own connections with the content, which results in the material being learned well. I cannot recommend Prof. Hruska enough. - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401/1402/2310 - Professor Hrushka is phenomenal! She makes a very difficult language easy to understand and fun to learn. She always came to class bubbly, wanting to engage with her students, and was willing to help with any questions we had. Yes there’s homework every night but, it’s a completion grade and helps with what you are currently learning. Show up to class! If you attend the tests are not that bad, it is about repetition and practice. I took Professor Hrushka for 3 semesters and her class was always first to fill up. She is hands down one of my favorite professors at Baylor, and if there were more classes I could have taken with her I would have! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:RUS 1401 - Professor Hruska does an excellent job teaching the class and you will learn quite a bit for one semester of Russian. Even though you learn a lot this class is well balanced with the creative and interactive style of Professor Hruska. I definitely recommend taking her class if you are interested in Russian, she does a great job. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - Professor Hruska is the most beloved teacher in the Russian department hands down. I was glad to have taken her again this year. She loves her students, and that’s that. I would have liked to see a few more creative class days like we had in first year, instead of doing the exercises out of the book only. The class could get boring—and Russian is my favorite subject in the whole wide world! I know several people were just in there to get their credit and graduate, and my complaint this year was not with Hruska but with the entire department catering to those people. The class was TOO SLOW. It was dreary to have to review so much in class, instead of tackling new things. However, the one shining light in the dark wood was the scientist assignments—those were cool. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - Prof. Hruska's bubbliness is the best! If you ask me on any given day what my favorite part of the day was, (unless something exceptional happened) it is always Russian class! Because she's so. adorable. She always makes my day and cheers me up. I leave each class encouraged and feeling like I've made progress. She assigns about an hour of homework every day, and we practice a lot in class. Sometimes it seems like busywork, but if you follow what she says, it will cement the vocab/grammar into your brain until it becomes second nature. Speaking of homework, she often falls behind on grading, but you aren't "flying blind" because it's a completion grade and while her corrections are helpful, you can live without them if you pay attention in class. You can always ask her questions too. She explains each concept multiple times in neat handwriting on the blackboard. It's hard NOT to learn in her class if you put forth the effort. Almost nobody makes a B in her class. You either do the homework, and make an A, or you don't do the homework, you're not prepared for the test, and you make a C. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY FOR THE VOCAB QUIZZES. She recommends you start making your vocab flashcards as soon as the chapter begins, and I wish I had done that more often. If you do, the quiz is a breeze instead of a panic, and if you start the chapter by making flashcards, by the end of it you'll barely have to study for the test. The class sometimes can seem repetitive because she wants to make sure everybody understands, but she's always glad to answer random questions from those who want to take it further. She tries to get all of her students engaged and excited about Russian, and most of us ended up joining Russian club. If you go to the club teas every Wednesday she's always there and happy to answer questions. This was a great course and I'm really sad I can't take Hruska next semester! I'll be taking Dr. Harris, who is Prof. Hruska's best friend and, if you can't take Hruska, definitely your second best option. They both eat lunch in Memorial every day, and students are always welcome to join them... That's just one more way you can tell they love their students! I love Prof. Hruska SO. STINKING. MUCH. So did everyone else in my class; in fact I've never met anyone who even remotely disliked her. (It'd be like disliking a fluffy kitten, Pope Francis, or a really nice Canadian—if you have a problem with her, odds are, the problem is not with her. ;) I know you'll love her too! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1410 - Professor Hrushka has been BY FAR my best professor at Baylor. Though I ultimately had to drop Russian in subsequent semesters due to a bad prof, Hrushka made me love the language. She is by far the most helpful professor I've ever had, going out of her way to help students outside of class. (She even offered to tutor me in Czech, which isn't taught at Baylor). Professor Hrushka is a genius when it comes to languages, being fluent in six of them, and definitely knows how to teach them. Her homework consists of daily workbook pages, which, while they can take some time, truly serve you well in the long run. She is very lenient on late work, as she understands that life happens and things sometime come up that prevents you from turning in assignments. Her tests are average, and she gives partial credit. Study a ton for her vocab tests though, as the pool that she pulls from usually numbers around 100 words per chapter (every word, whether practiced in class or not, is fair game). Her chapter tests are very fair, though grammar intensive. She is also very generous with extra credit, giving it out for a variety of outside events as well as questions on the tests/quizzes. Overall, Professor Hrushka will be one of the most energetic, character-filled professors you take at Baylor if you choose to take her class. I'd strongly encourage you to get to know her outside of class as well, as her life story is riveting. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - I LOVE MS. HRUSKA! She's a really good teacher and just wants to see you improve. You can be an idiot, but so long as your trying, you will get a good grade. Russian is tricky but she makes it easy. Downside, she's bad about passing back stuff but that only mattered to a couple people anyways. Take Russian with Ms. Hruska! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1401 - Such a wonderful and caring teacher! She was so patient with every one of us, and genuinely eager to see us succeed. She is so fun, it's easy to forget that Russian is supposed to be a really hard language! My favorite professor at Baylor! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - First off the Russian department at Baylor is superb. All the professors want to be connected with their students and are available if needed! We took a trip to an Orthodox church and the professors invited all the students to dinner at the end of the year for Russian food! TAKE RUSSIAN, it may sound like a tough language but the professors teach it so well a caveman could do it haha. Hrushka is awesome!!! The class was so much fun I looked forward to it everyday. There were vocab quizzes and the tests were very straight forward if you kept up with your homework. BAYLOR IF YOU ARE READING THIS KEEP PROFESSOR HRUSHKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Best. Teacher. Ever. She's so funny. Russian is a hard language but it is my favorite class by a mile. I love Ms. Hrushka. If I ever become a professor, I will teach exactly like she does. As for the workload, second year russian progresses at a much slower pace than first year. We read some short biographies of poets, review the grammar we learned in first year, and learn some new vocab. Most of the time we just laugh. This is a fantastic class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Professor Hrushka rocks! She is really patient and pretty funny too. She has lots of weird stories. Russian is hard, duh, but she made it fun and easy. Lots of laid back, in class group work. There are workbook assignment due every day but they aren't very hard and it actually really helped me to do a little bit of Russian every night. Standard vocab quizzes and she goes over the exam material really well. Oral exam was a joke. TAKE HER! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Best professor I've had a Baylor. She's very helpful, very good at explaining things, and she makes the class a lot of fun. Take her if you can. - Grade In Class:A
