Comments:2306 - PLS DO NOT TAKE!! he did active learning everyday this semester and we would only go through like 3 slides with barely any material on it. most of the quizzes are hard, his exams are harder and he does not teach in class a lot. only thing that helped me pass was the SI and studying at LEAST 2 weeks before exams.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:Genetics - The class consists of active learning every day, where there are clicker questions. We only ever got through about 3-4 questions before class was over. Overall, being in class is unproductive as far as actually learning the material. There are also lockdown quizzes after every class, but they are fair and have two attempts. In addition Dr. Miles drops about 10-12 of them. The only way I did well was by consistently reading the chapter in the textbook before class; you pretty much have to take your own notes and teach yourself the main concepts, which sucks, but it's doable though. Although I did not enjoy the class itself, Dr. Miles is a very nice guy. He is super helpful during office hours and was pretty available/willing to help with any questions. After going to office hours multiple times, I learned he actually wants people to do well and will help with any concepts that may be confusing. The exams are challenging, but the final can replace the lowest test grade. There's also packback due every week but that's easy points. Overall, you can do well as long as you're willing to put in the work, but you may be better off in Moehnke's class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - This class has completely changed from previous years. This was the first semester where academic learning was every lecture. You do not learn anything in class you have to teach yourself and then take lockdown browser quizzes before every class, even if we just had an exam a quiz was due. The SI was very nice but her exams were nowhere near the difficulty of Dr. Miles' exams. I started of doing really well int he class and then on the 3rd exam did very poorly I went in to talk to him about and he told me to study less which did not help at all. If you can please take someone else. I shouldn't have to teach myself material when our tuition is this high.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - Since Dr. Miles’ class is flipped (learning the material before lecture) the amount of work can easily overwhelm you. 2 of the 3 lecture days are dedicated to covering material on slides that barely scratch the surface of what you need to know and Fridays are active learning days where learning assistants give you practice problems and help you if needed. The exams are exceptionally tough and require that you understand the material rather than just memorizing it. Exams 3 and 4 are significantly harder so please score as high as possible on the first two as these cannot be dropped (including the final). Aside from the exams, 20% of your grade consists of discussion questions on Packback and quizzes on Lockdown Browser. The quizzes cover material in the textbook so make sure to thoroughly read it. The brutal truth to success is to READ THE TEXTBOOK. The book will feel like a chore to get through but the slides simply won’t help you enough to even pass the course. To leave off on a positive note: Miles is a respectful person and will always help you if you ask him. If he revises the structure of his class (which he plans to do) I can easily see him as the best choice for Genetics in the future.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 2306 - Unfortunately, I think I taught myself 97% of this course at home, using my textbook. Class time was spent talking with my friend... not because I didn't find the course interesting, but because I very quickly figured out that his lectures only SCRATCH THE SURFACE of course content that you need to know. There were several lectures that we did not finish in class and course material on quizzes that we did not cover. Reading ahead was crucial. When he says, "that's the key," don't be fooled, for the "key" is only a FRACTION of what you're going to need to know for the exams. Don't get me wrong, this class was doable, but I had to put in a lot of work outside of class to be successful.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO2306 - Dr. Miles' class has been one of the worst experiences I can say I've had at Baylor. Not only does he have quizzes due every Sunday night (even the night before an exam or the weekend following a Friday exam), these quizzes won't even be over material that is relevant to the exam you are going to take. The only two cumulative quizzes we took were the night before our exams. Ridiculous. DO not trust anyone who says he is a good professor, he isn't. It's just plain and simple. Most of the people who thinks he is a great guy will use that as an excuse to say he's a great professor but those things are not synonymous. You will have a hard time passing this class not because you don't put in the effort, but because his tests are not reflective of the chapters, he doesn't lecture over relevant material, and it is 100% up to you to read all 500 pages of the text book and understand everything on your own. If you can take ANYONE ELSE FOR THIS CLASS DO IT.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr. Miles is probably a good guy, but apparently being a good guy does not mean a good teacher. The lectures are unhelpful at best, with most of his powerpoints consisting of 6-8 slides that are supposed to cover entire units. He moves extremely fast through the material, however this may be warranted as the entire textbook is covered in one course. You are expected to have already taken notes on much of the course material, and weekly quizzes test you over material that has not been reviewed in class. For the most part, I taught myself all of this course's content. The tests are very specific, however are completely multiple choice. Many people in this class struggled to get good grades on each test. Dr. Miles is relatively one of the better options for genetics, and the lesser of a few evils. I am happy to have made it through the course, and will not miss attending the lectures. All this in mind, if it really comes down to it, take Miles.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr. Miles is super nice, he is helpful in office hours and active learning days were pretty useful. However, his exams really sucked, i would study for hours and barely scrape by, he does try to trick you on exams and his lectures were kind of useless to me. You basically will have to memorize your textbook for this class. He has a quiz every weekend, they are on lockdown browser with the webcam and they also can be tricky sometimes. It isn't impossible but I am happy not to have to take this class again.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO2306 - Probably one of the worst and most unhelpful professors there are in the Baylor Biology department. I ignored people when they said to take Moehnke's course because I always give professors a chance. However, I am certain that if you want to save your GPA, take Moehnke. I cannot believe that they still allow this man to be teaching this important course. The department chair should seriously consider his employment if so many students are succeeding in the other BIO2306 courses compared to his. Not only does he teach two days a week, but he skips chapters and expects you to know the material well. He will quiz you on material that he has not covered in class because he is lazy and lets his TAs teach on Friday, while he is on standby. I have never met a professor that does not make himself readily available to his students especially if they see that they are struggling. This man's teaching ability is very mediocre as he tries to act like a cynical, know-it-all that utilizes big words, but does not explain the material very well or even expand off it. He is quite possibly the worst professor I will ever encounter at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2022-11-14

Comments:2306 - Miles is definitely a good guy, and I admit that my grades were not good, but it was the setup of the course. Miles sincerely helps each student, but genetic is too difficult. If you can, please choose Miles' class during the summer vacation, which will be much easier than the regular semester. miles was actually the best choice over the other genetic professors.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2022-11-08

Comments:Genetics - Honestly, after hearing so many horror stories about Miles, I went into Genetics expecting it to be much worse than it was. Yes the class requires a good amount of studying, which should not be surprising for a premed course, but success felt very achievable overall. Miles expects you to know a great amount of detail about all of the material, but he almost never asked questions about extraneous detail; the content was very heavy but also very predictable (KNOW THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES). Office hours were not very useful to me, largely because his office is generally flooded with people, to the point the crowd often spilled out into the hall. However, SI and independent study were sufficient for me to score 100, 96,89, and 92 on the exams. The quizzes often felt difficult but in all honesty I usually crammed for them and took them at 10:30 pm Sunday night, so don't do that. Even so, he only counts the highest 10, so the winning strategy is to work REALLY hard to bank a few 100s on the first 4 or 5 quizzes because those are far and away the easiest. All this to say, don't be intimidated by this course. Between a work ethic and study plan that could reasonably be expected of a STEM student, a minimum of a B is very attainable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Genetics - TRASH. this man is awful. ive never had a worse experience in a class. it was also during covid & he made it 10x worse. always take moehnke. I regret taking him every day. Ruined my GPA.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2022-06-02

Comments:2306 - Dr. Miles is a good person and a good teacher but the workload is insane. I read every word of my textbook and spent hours a day reading and would do good on the quizzes but failed 2/4 of exams. I was extremely prepared but his exams are near impossible. He prides himself in how tricky he makes his questions. Genetics is a hard topic regardless of the professor but he goes out of his way to make it a bit more difficult. He is not the worst professor but if you can take someone else I'd recommend it. All exam averages were failing. He doesn't want you to fail so he provides learning assistants and they also have office hours too to help. He isn't that available during the week for help but his LA's are almost always available but they often don't even know the answer.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2022-04-26

Comments:2306 - Miles is an amazing professor and very approachable. He is passionate and great human being who wants to see all his students succeed in this tough course. With that being said, this is an extremely tough course and you gotta put in a lot of time to it. Here are some tips: 1) Write/Type out all your learning objectives (don\'t miss a detail), 2) If you think that something is too detailed, MILES WILL 100% put it on the exam so know it well, 3) Exam 1 is very easy so get a 100% on that, 4) Exam 2, 3, and 4 are very difficult, but if you follow the above tips and go to office/LA hours while also reading the book well, you will get an A in this class. His Quizzes come from ppts, small details for the book. While taking his exams/quizzes, taking your time and don\'t rush. Reread the questions and PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS IN THE QUESTIONS BECAUSE HE WILL TRIP YOU UP. At the end of the semester in addition to extra credit, he will bump you up by half a letter grade so B to B+ if you go to office hours, are motivated to learn from your mistakes and just curious about genetics. So breathe and you will be alright. Good luck.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Genetics - By far the best professor I've had at Baylor. For all you premeds out there, this is your first real biology class, but don't panic. This class is definitely difficult, but getting an A is also very doable (it's also really nice that a 90 counts as an A). What makes this class particularly hard is that there are no exam drops. The exams themselves are fair, mostly multiple choice, and some free response if there is math involved. However, I felt like all the exams were harder than the final. Some tips for doing well: don't skip class, go to his office hours, and make sure you read the textbook. If you are premed and can't manage an A in this class you really should reconsider your major. As a side note, my grades on the exams were: A, A, B+, B, and A on the final.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-12-17

Comments:2306 - This class is hard because this is the first real bio class you take. Typically, as a sophomore. He is completely fair in grading so I wasn't even mad. He is literally so nice and three years after taking him, I still remember the way he said certain things.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2021-10-18

Comments:Genetics - I am writing this review having taken this class over a year ago because Dr. Miles prepares you SO WELL for upper biology classes like molecular genetics and molecular cell bio. His class took ALOT of studying but if you are premed or trying to go to grad school get ready because studying is what you are going to do for a long time. Even though it was tough, Dr. Miles was an amazing professor and he is super available for office hours. I learned so much in this class! And Dr. Miles truly cares for his students, he usually ends up dropping a couple of quizzes because he knows they are hard. Please don’t stray away because of the challenge! Trust me your future self will thank you for having a good foundation in genetics!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-08-16

Comments:Bio 2306- Genetics - Dr. Miles should not be getting as much hate on his class as he does. Please keep in mind that Genetics is just a difficult class to begin with because there is a lot of material to cover. However, I found that he was more than available for office hours and extra help, and I never thought his tests or quizzes were too hard (and Im not that great of a student) if you really read the book, do the learning objectives he provides, and do the practice questions, you will be fine! An A is more than achievable if you put in work- so if you have found yourself "stuck" w him as a prof, you will be okay.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2021-08-03

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr. Miles is the worst fucking Genetics professor on the face of this earth. You'd be better off goind through hell than taking his bullshit take on the course. I took this class during the course of June-July and it did nothing for my GPA as a whole. The lectures that he gave throughout the course of the summer session did not even prepare me for the exams that were to follow because you had to literally read the textbook chapters word for word. Don't even get me started on his bitch ass quizzes that did nothing but bring your overall grade point average down. If you want to spare a horrendous amount of work and torment, DO NOT under any circumstances take Dr. Miles' Genetics class. You'd be better off swimming with sharks or trying to outrun a cheetah than you would getting an A in his course.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2021-07-07

Comments:2306 - If you're reading this, you are probably aware that Genetics is a very difficult class, and you proceed with the assumption that it WILL take up most of your time. Go to office hours/LA hours. I had a class conflict with his regular office hours so I would schedule appointments with him (Which honestly worked better as I had 1-on-1 time to ask him things). Every Friday, he has "active learning" where you guys do worked problems and you can ask questions, which is nice. His quizzes are honestly kind of a nightmare. They're worth 25% of your grade (which is more than the exams are worth!), and are in my opinion harder than the exams. I realized that some quiz questions can be found on quizlet, so keep that in mind. I think Dr. Miles realized that his quizzes tanked peoples grades and were more daunting than the exams, so he dropped the lowest 3. He also adds attendance credit and extra credit based on how many LA office hours you attend. For the exams, do the worked problems that he lists on his canvas page and again, go to his office hours to clear anything up. To sum it all up: beware of the quizzes, do the worked problems, stay ahead with the material and if you are confused about ANYTHING, go to office hours. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2021-05-10

Comments:Genetics - There are better options for Genetics. He is a great lecturer, but it doesn't matter much when the majority of quiz and exam questions come from tiny details in the textbook, which I read cover to cover. It is pretty much guaranteed that you have to sacrifice any kind of social life to pass the course, but success is not something you can guarantee. SI is very helpful, LA's are very helpful, Miles is very knowledgeable, and I do feel that I have learned a lot, however, your grade may or may not reflect the knowledge you have. We have not taken the final yet and he has not yet dropped some of our quiz grades and put in participation credit, so I may end up with a B in the course, but regardless, hear me when I say that if you want to maintain a good GPA it is best to take someone else. I do not dislike Miles, but I can't recommend the course. If he is your only option, front-load as much as possible, attend LA office hours or his office hours if you have even the slightest question, pay attention to the vocabulary at the end of each chapter, and known literally everything from the sections listed in his learning objectives. Good luck; you've got this!  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2021-04-30

Comments:Genetics - Let me start off by saying that Genetics is a very hard class which is not Miles fault. However I personally did not mesh with his teaching style which made me incredibly confused on our topics. The only people I know that did well went to all his office hours and Si so if you want to do well in this class. What really made my grade struggle was his quizzes they are incredibly difficult and are every week so you really have to understand everything you learn the same week you learn it. His class is incredibly difficult so I don't recommend taking it with another hard class like I did taking it with ochem like I did since you need to dedicate ALOT of time to this class to do well. He also makes you know lots of minute details so make sure you understand everything on his learning objectives perfectly and if not ask him questions. I just did poorly since I was so burnt out from fall 2020 semester with no breaks and I had covid 2x but I believe in you good luck.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:Genetics - So here is the real tea about Dr. Miles. First off I think he is a great teacher/lecturer. He explains the material fairly well; however, I HIGHLY recommend you go to office hours for every question you have even if it's not a super big topic. He is amazing with office hours. I went to almost every single one and afterward I would be a master of whatever topic I was confused on. He comes up with practice problems on the fly and they are super helpful. He is very patient and explains the material super well in a one-on-one eviornment. However, he does take a pretty long time to reach through email so be prepared to wait a week for a response. He restructured his course percentages for my semester making the weekly Canvas quizzes worth 25% of our grade. This totally screwed everyone's grade because his quizzes were SUPER hard and they counted for so much of our grade. His tests are also pretty hard and kind of detailed. I did well on them because I went to office hours every week and went off with studying the textbook material and practice problems. If you take Dr. Miles do not expect an easy semester. He makes it hard, but I can say that I know genetics soooo well because of it (which is super helpful for MCAT purposes). He is tough, but he teaches the material very well. He aslo dropped several quizzes at the end of the semester and we got 10% participation grades which was super appreciated. So overall, be prepared to work your ass off for this class, but it isn't impossible to get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-01-05

Comments:2306 - I feel like Dr. Miles gets a lot of unnecessary negative reviews on here because genetics is a really hard class. Every genetics professor has lower ratings, and I think that's really because of the difficulty of genetics. I thought Dr. Miles did a good job explaining material and further clarifying it in office hours if I was confused. While his quizzes and exams are hard, I believe that should be expected when going into harder science classes. He really tests your ability to apply material and will sometime's try to trick you on questions so always be aware of that. Every Friday, he does active learning, which his when he brings in learning assistants, and you do practice problems the whole time. While I did find this helpful, I also found it unhelpful since it cut into lecture time and we were not able to lecture of some material before quizzes. Personally, I would have done something like that out of class and offered a fair incentive to go, but that's not for me to decide. Anyways, here's my advice for this class: read the textbook, do practice problems, go to SI, and study a lot! If you do not read the textbook, it will likely be a long semester for you. When reading the textbook, have his learning objectives for the chapter up so that you know what to focus on specifically while reading. If it is not mentioned in the learning objectives, no need to read it or study it. The learning objectives also have recommended practice problems in the book to do. Doing those practice problems is crucial to doing well in this class. Do as many practice problems as you can. Some of them have answers in the back of the textbook to go over after doing them. Dr. Miles is also willing to help you go over practice problems in office hours so take advantage of that! Next, GO TO SI. SI is extremely helpful in helping reinforce the concepts and will make studying before the exam so much easier. Finally, another obvious but important piece of advice is do not study at the last minute. The material is difficult and there is a lot of it, so spacing out studying over time is really important. To put it bluntly, this class is hard but putting in the necessary work will make an A possible!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-12-07

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr. Miles is a dry but somewhat entertaining professor. This concludes his positive attributes. Genetics requires a lot of studying, no matter who you take it with, but this section is another level. His quizzes as well as exams require recalling an absurd amount of minutia, none of which you will remember a week after the course ends. The worst part of it, however, is that a number of his assessments focus in extreme detail on concepts either brushed over or absent entirely in the textbook and lectures. For me, there is nothing more frustrating than feeling that the work you have put into a course is not reflected in the grades you receive. This is the final impression that Miles' genetics course has given me. Stay as far away as possible.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2020-12-05

Comments:3342 - Having taken Dr. Miles for genetics before, I knew that while he is knowledgeable and approachable, his way of teaching simply didn\'t work for me. Concepts were explained very broadly and in a rushed manner, and I felt like the quizzes and tests contained questions that had unnecessarily complicated wording and were not a good reflection of what was actually taught and focused on. Some questions were very obscure (could be 1 sentence from a reading). You have 3 tests (20% each - MC & free response) and a final (25%). The quizzes are worth 10%. The discussion questions are 5% (includes clicker questions; he cold-calls people every class to answer his questions that are based on the reading for that lecture). He did offer extra credit (1 pt. added to your overall average) if your discussion/participation grade was above 70% and an essay opportunity for points added to the final exam. You still get quizzes dropped (only 10 of your highest grades count). I would keep up with the readings so that you are ready for every lecture and don\'t fall behind. It\'s a lot of material per test, so studying well in-advance is key. I studied primarily from the book and only reviewed the lecture notes/powerpoints briefly. Always try to go to office hours to review his past quizzes and exams since he sometimes reuses the questions or has similar ones. The class is honestly Miles\' genetics class 2.0, but it\'s doable!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-02-19

Comments:BIO 2306 (Genetics) - I think that Dr. Miles is a good teacher, but the class is so content heavy that it needs to be thoroughly studied for or you'll have no chance for it. There are the learning objectives for each chapter on Canvas, which will help immensely with focusing on what to study. Don't do what I did and waste time trying to remember every single detail the book gives. Personally, I did alright on exams, but the clicker quizzes were what really pulled down my grade. There are at least 12 and the 2 lowest get dropped. The syllabus quiz is for a grade too, so pay attention on your first day to start the year off right. He has lab assistants go around with worksheets on Fridays, but I didn't find them all that helpful during studying except as example problems to describe what I didn't know when I was asking for help.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2020-05-13

Comments:2306 - This class is a joke. Never worked this hard in my life for a B. Miles is a cool guy but he simply cannot teach. His tests and his quizzes are so unfair. You can listen to his lectures, do every SI worksheet, and read over all the learning objectives and that still won't guarantee that you will even pass the test. No joke. And don't even get me started on his weekly quizzes. If you can, heed my warning and take the other genetics prof.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2306 - Never in my life have I doubted my capabilities, but let me tell you this class made me want to drink bleach on many occasions. Miles is a great person and you can tell he knows his stuff, but teaching style was impossible for me. I studied so so hard for this class but could never get a good grade on anything. I did all of the assigned readings and went to every single SI, but still was failing left and right. I retook the class with Moehnke and got an A, do yourself a favor and to the same.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:3342 - Dr. Miles is extremely nice and funny guy. He truly wants you to succeed. Despite the fact that it was his first semester teaching this class, I found that he was very knowledgeable and very helpful. The class is relatively hard. You have three tests worth %20 each and a final worth %25. The quizzes are very challenging as they are timed and clicker. Pray for canvas quizzes. They are worth 10%. The last %5 is discussion questions which is a gimme if you know anything. Overall good class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-14

Comments:2302 - Genetics-I've never invested so much time and effort into one class. Dr. Miles is a nice and helpful guy but his tests and quizzes are tough. His exams are all multiple choice. We had a quiz every Friday: some in class, some on canvas. If this class is required for your major here are a few words of advice: DO NOT take this class with a heavy workload. Most importantly, do NOT take it with more than one other rigorous course if you want that A. This semester I was at 17 hours taking make or break courses like Genetics, OCHEM, Labs, Calculus, etc...DON'T DO IT. These classes require an abnormal amount of time and devotion. Be prepared to lose sleep(lots of it).  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2019-12-20

Comments:Bio 2306 - Genetics is a difficult class to take with any professor. In any genetics class you will be expected to put in a TON of work. Dr. Miles is no exception. There are weekly quizzes (wich are very difficult if you have not read ahead or studied) worth 20% of your grade but he only keeps your highest 10 grades. The exams were tricky but if you knew your material WELL, you could expect at least a B on them. He does daily clicker questions and if you end the semester with at least a 70% average on these questions he will add 1 point to your final grade (which is VERY MUCH NEEDED). This class is a lot of work and IT WILL take up most of your time if you want to make a good grade. With all that said, if you have a lighter course load then take him, but honestly genetics will be hard with any professor so does it really matter? P.S. study your butt off and you can do really well on the final. It was the easiest test overall.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Genetics - high key the hardest class ive ever taken. Take moehnke if u can because its much easier to attain an A in that class. That said, Miles is super smart, his tests are just a little wack.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-12-12

Comments:2306 - Let me preface this review by stating: Dr. Miles teaches one of the most difficult courses biology majors take during their undergraduate studies. This being said, Dr. Miles does not sugar coat the subject and to succeed in the class, (success is relative, but lets say to get an A) he expects you to put in a serious amount of work. Reading for genetics is time consuming and detail intensive and Dr. Miles knows this, which is why his quizzes and tests not only test your knowledge of the general concepts, but also the details surrounding that concept. His lecturing is fine, some people might call him boring, but that’s subjective. The truth is: the man always knows what he’s talking about. He is a true expert in the field of genetics and is a wealth of knowledge. Spend time talking to him and you’ll see this yourself. Work hard and you’ll be okay. When I took the class, tests were 60% of the grade while quizzes were 20% and the final was 20%. This leaves little room for error and the pace of the course is fast with a lot of detailed information to master. Read the book closely, don’t cram, spread it out, and go to SI and office hours for any subject that you’re unfamiliar with. It’s just one course, you’ll be okay. Good luck! -VZ  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Bio 2306 - Absolutely terrible. I think it's about time Baylor searched for new genetics professors.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:2306 - With cumulative clicker quizzes weekly and only lecturing about 1/4 of the material, Dr. Miles is not the ideal professor. He seems like a good professor in the beginning but shifts to requiring a heavy course load without proper guidance.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE OTHER REVIEWS PLEASE!!! if you care about your gpa at all do no take miles. Unless you have natural talent i wouldn't recommend taking him for genetics. your grade is made up of a bunch of quizzes that you take in class every friday, 4 exams and a cumulative final. I did what miles said, i read before classes and would do all the practice problems and comprehension questions at the end of each chapter and i still did poorly on every exam. i also wouldn't say he's very helpful, a girl in my class asked if he could provide extra practice problems and he told us to make our own up. if you want to keep your good gpa, do not take him!  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - I know a lot of people struggle in his class, but it's because they don't put in the effort. Dr. Miles is an amazing professor whose lectures and clicker questions are immensely helpful if you are on top of your readings. His lectures are very interactive and he tests your knowledge as the class goes on. I studied purely through the book and his tests were very fair based on the content he taught. It is not an easy class by any means, but if you put in the work and don't slack in this class, you will succeed. He is always willing to help and offers 2% extra credit at the end of the semester. I would definitely recommend Dr. Miles.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Genetics - Class is a joke, don't expect to get a good grade, let along pass. Class averages are always F's and he doesn't curve. Cannot explain how difficult Miles makes this class. My biggest issue is that he gives no guidance for exams so you have no idea what to expect. God forbid you have to take this class don't step on any cracks, break any mirrors, walk under any ladders etc. from now until you're done with the struggle that is Johnathan Miles  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - So you're probably reading all of these reviews and trying to decide whether to take Miles or Moehnke. Obviously, Im writing about Miles and never took Moehnke (other than lab) but I had a lot of friends that did take Moehnke and they all said basically said the same thing. Basically, Moehnke is the better teacher between the two because she explains things more clearly and only goes over the most relevant stuff. HOWEVER, it is harder to get a good grade in her class because your grade is solely based off exams. This sucks because if you screw up on one or maybe even two exams, you're absolutely screwed and you will have to retake the entire course. With MIles, he has clicker questions, canvas quizzes, on top of exams that will add to your grade. While I think he is as not a good teacher as Moehnke, I believe that he is the lesser evil of the two, in terms of getting a good grade. Dr. Miles is a really sweet guy and is clearly very passionate and interested in the concepts that he teaches. I also found it funny to see how nerdy he is lmao. He drinks from the same Spider-Man cup every single day. Dr. Miles always posts each lecture's slides on Canvas, and he makes it easy to follow along and add more notes if you want. Personally, I found it really hard to pay attention as the semester went on, mostly because I showed up to class exhausted from balancing George OChem with taking notes for this class and also because my friend sat next to me and distracted me a lot lmao. However, this class is very doable as long as you put in the work. Maybe you didn't realize it your freshman year, but you definitely will notice it this semester. Being PreMed / PreDent is not fun. Whereever you go, or whoever you take, these classes in the material do not change and you need to sacrifice and put in the work that these courses require if you want to succeed and get the grade you want. I honestly believe that Miles receives the hate that he gets because the people that write negative reviews blame him for their bad grade. They themselves never did the extra work that this course DEMANDS of a good PreMed student. While I do think that Miles can be pretty tricky on his exams and quizzes, for the most part it lies on YOU to get a good grade at the end of the day. It is very possible to get an A in this class, I was super close to the cutoff. If you want to check my credibility, my GPA is above a 3.75 so take my opinion with a grain of salt. To do well in this class, I would highly recommend actually reading the book (which for some reason not everybody did and later failed, weird how that works) and taking notes as you go. This can be very time consuming and tedious, but this is the only way you'll survive the massive amount of information being shoveled into your brain. Make sure you take your time with his exams and quizzes, he likes to be tricky with wording too! So, if you've managed to actually read this entire review, bottom line take Miles over Moehnke, sacrifice your time for a good grade, and good luck!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2306- Genetics - Miles over Moehnke all day. Don't get me wrong the man is hard but all you have to do is stay ahead on the readings and do all the recommended practice problems in the end of each chapter. Very difficult but doable. Read everything thoroughly, he knows the mistakes that students make so he tailors his tests towards those mistakes to trick students. Nonetheless, a very interesting and relevant subject that requires a lot to get put in to get a lot out  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO2306 - Dr. Miles' exams are written so for me it was better than clicker exams in Moenke's class. The book is your savior! To get an A, you need to read the book thoroughly and do all the examples in each chapter. If you're confident in doing those, then you'll be fine on the exams. His wordings are a bit tricky but it is no harder than what is given in the book. There is a quiz almost every week, so you need to stay on top of your reading. Utilize his office hours and go over the test! Try your best on the 1st test because it's the easiest and it will give you a boost in your overall grade and confidence.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 1305 - I think Dr. Miles is a great teacher and if you go to his office hours he helps you understand the material you are confused about. His test are on the harder side, but they are definitely manageable if you read the book, take good notes, review your notes and ask him question about the material you don't understand.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Love Dr. Miles!!!!! His tests are really hard, but not impossible. It's honestly just because the material is very content heavy and you have to study more than 2 nights before the exam. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours!!! He is super helpful and really cares about his students knowing the material. Flame him up for looking like Charles Darwin or something like that. I don't even have him as a professor anymore and I go in his office all the time for genetics help and for life help in general. A good dude 9.8/10 cause no one's perfect.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - Miles is a great teacher but his class is unreasonably hard. He argues that the questions will help with genetics and the MCAT, but that is not true. He really is a great professor, but his exams just do not reflect his teaching on the material. He also would say things wouldn't be on the exam, but then they would be on the exam anyways and his students would all get extremely frustrated. Overall you will learn a great deal in his class, but your GPA will not reflect the work you put in because of how hard his tests are.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:2306 - I'm glad I took Miles instead of Moehnke. Dr. Moehnke just doesn't teach you and you won't get a good lecture from taking her class like you would with Miles. You will have to work for an A and will only get one if you put a lot of time in and commit to reading each section covered by the learning objectives. Btw, Ochem is the class to cram for if you're gonna cram.. if you try to cram for genetics there is 100% chance you will not make an A. Also, Miles will say the phrase "That's just something to keep in mind" like every ten minutes. Every time he says it, whatever he just said, write that **** down!!! Go to his office hours and understand the material because you might as well take advantage of Dr. Miles because he is so knowledgable and has great research. Only negative I see of taking Miles over Moehnke is he has some questions that are super fact based which is annoying if you don't read the whole textbook and those are the questions that separate the A test grades from the B's. Take Miles if you want to learn and not get yelled at during lecture.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 2306 - Dr. Miles is the best choice for genetics. This class is naturally a very difficult one, and is one of the strongest weed-out classes, but it is very possible to be better than you expected if you are willing to put in the work. Miles is a good teacher, he does a great job explaining the concepts and giving kids a look at exactly what they need to know for the tests. But, just like any college class should be, he doesn't spoon feed you. That is why 30% of the kids in my class dropped after the first test - they weren't prepared to work practice problems, put in the time, and master each concept that was guaranteed to be on every test. Miles gives you no surprises throughout the whole semester, he even gives us learning objectives telling us what concepts are important for us to focus on. For students taking this course in future semesters, make sure you go to the learning objectives office hours (they are so smart and nice and helped me tremendously with problems that I wasn't able to figure out on my own). The students who care about learning and understanding, more than simply memorizing and getting a good grade, will be the ones who do well in this class. Miles > Moehnke.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr.Miles is a super nice guy and you can definitely tell he loves what he teachers; HOWEVER, this does not mean he is a good professor. He teaches the absolute minimum he can per chapter, and then tests over tiny details found in the book. His tests don't measure how well you know the concepts, but instead how many small details you can memorize from each chapter. The chapter objectives are helpful, but are not enough to get even close to an A on his tests. You pretty much have to read the entire 800 page book in order to get an A in the class, which is completely ridiculous considering the amount of material he actually lectures over. One his power points was only 2 slides for an ENTIRE chapter!!! Like YALL!!! The man does not teach 10% of what you are expected to know. If you want to teach yourself genetics, by all means take Miles, but it wasn't what I was looking for and is definitely a weed out class.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 2306 - If you can do something to avoid this class, do it now or you will regret it. He went slightly over learning material, I mean "slightly" (read word by word from ppt). Thousand of times he said that "This will not be on the test or quizz". Argg, it was on the test, chapter test and final. Many people tried to convince themselves that going to SI, reading a whole Genetics book, "camping" at his office hour may get an A, I apologize that you are dreaming. I did all of those and got a D. Try to avoid him ASAP, don't be fooled by positive comment. Trust me  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - I LOVE DR MILES!!!!!! Pls do not listen to any of the negative reviews. Dr Miles is a great professor and is passionate about what he teaches. Yes, the class is difficult, but if you put in the time and effort it is possible to do well. He posts learning objectives for every chapter which are super helpful for the test. He writes them with his learning assistants and bases most of the test questions off of your understanding of these concepts. As well as understanding the concepts, I think it is also important to read the textbook. Dr. Miles is a very intelligent man and he is super helpful if you come to office hours. As for the lectures, he explains everything very well and has clicker questions throughout the class to make sure we are understanding the material. At the end of the semester if you have an average of 70 or above on these clicker questions, he adds a point to your overall average. He also gives extra credit for completing the course evaluation. The class consists of 3 tests each worth 20%, canvas quizzes and in class clicker quizzes that are worth 15% of your grade, and the final which is worth 25%. All of this to say, if you care about the class and put in the work you can do well!! Highly recommend Miles!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - Honestly, I put so much time and effort into this class just to get a really crappy grade. I basically memorized the textbook, yet I still found the tests very difficult and getting average grades. If you want to get an A your going to need to do more than just knowing all the concepts. You will learn a lot from the class, which I have to give him credit for, but be prepared to take a fat L to your GPA whenever you take Miles. He says his test prepare you for the MCAT, but I believe they are overkill and hurt more than help students. Most people will end up taking him because he pretty much teaches most of the people. Summary: Miles class separates those who work hard and the no-life's who always study. You'll pass if you work hard, but it's not good enough to get a high grade. (BTW you will start get "slightly" depressed after working so hard to get an OK grade...I speak from experience). Send prayers for my GPA.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO 2306 - I thought he was a good professor. It is definitely possible to make an A in the class, as I have done I think. However, you should go to SI and also do the problems in the back of the book, and look at the learning concept sheets. The tests seem pretty fair. But you also have to read the book, which takes a lot of time. Try to find out the main overarching concepts that Dr. Miles is trying to get at. This class takes a lot of time, but it is possible to get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - Do you like struggling? Do you love to read hard material in a short period of time that still doesn't help much with the test? Do you like having tests that are extremely difficult, only conceptual, and require more time than is given? This is the man for you!!! He gives you 4 exams, with one of which is the final, and he gives clicker tests and sometimes canvas quizzes. He loves to assign the Canvas quizzes on Saturday afternoons which are due on Sunday night, so if you love spending your weekends thinking about genetics all the time, this is an awesome course. Especially when the quizzes he gives are extremely hard even with the book in front of you to help when given on Canvas. I have made almost all A's and some B's before taking this class. In my honest opinion, I feel like he forgets that we are also taking a difficult OChem class and Stat class, so we can't spend every waking moment on his class :(. By all means though, he is a super funny and nice guy. But the amount of time he puts in to make these tests this difficult must be astounding. If you want to take Genetics Honors in a basic genetics course then go ahead and take him, but if i were you, I would take the other genetics professor if you have more than one difficult class in the semester like every other premed student.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:2306 Genetics - Dr. Miles's lectures are a little tough to get through- there is a lot of information and he is a little monotone- but his powerpoints and Learning Objective sheets are super helpful for figuring out what to study. As long as you put in the time to read the chapters, do the Learning Objective sheets, and do his recommended practice problems the tests aren't too bad. They are hard, but we cover 200ish textbook pages per test so that's a little obvious. Dr. Miles does a good job of making sure you know what to focus on for the tests. We had about 15 quizzes, some online and some in class, of which he only grades your top 10 scores. We had 3 tests plus a final with new and cumulative information.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-11-12

Comments:1305 - I had Miles for 1305 my freshmen year of college and needed to inform people about what to expect from his class. He's a cool and nice guy, but his lectures are directly from the book and his class activities are not helpful. You can learn just as much by just reading the textbook yourself. He went from having maybe 1 teaching aide, to 4 the next year. That just proves how much "help" he needed.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 2306 - ~Genetics~ Professor Miles is a WONDERFUL lecturer. His powerpoints are easy to understand, and he presents clearly and knowledgeably. I cannot complain about that at all. However, I think his tests are unnecessarily difficult. I did not pass a single one besides the final (which I believe he made a little easier), and I studied a lot for this course. Your grade is comprised of tests, the final, clicker questions (make a 70% or higher and he will boost your final grade up 1%), and quizzes. The workload is a lot of reading, and you definitely need to keep up with it. Read the chapters before class, and I would recommend copying down/printing out the notes before class so you can pay attention to what he is saying as opposed to frantically scribbling. As a whole, I would recommend Miles. He genuinely cares about the topic and students, and he is available by office hours and email for help or just to chat about nerdy things! Be cautious if you tend to be a bad test taker, but otherwise, I would definitely recommend Miles.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - Honestly, he is a good person, but his lectures, especially the Power Points are not very helpful. Fewer words, a bunch of pictures from the textbook. The worse thing is he likes application problems, so if you can figure out how to build connection between the concepts and his test questions, you will be fine. Reading textbook and doing the mastering bio are not enough, and doing some extra practice problems would be very helpful. You need practice more if you want to know how to use the concepts. Also pay attention to the concepts that he explained in his lectures because he definitely will test students these concepts that he mentioned in the class. He is a very knowledgable professor, very smart and kind. Maybe he is so intelligent that he does not understand students can really struggle with his lectures if he does not provide students access to learn more things. Here I mean, more practices about application problems.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-12

Comments:1305 - AVOID taking Miles if you can; his tests do not accurately portray if you studied or not. Small amount of grade comes from mastering bio; the rest is tests. His lectures do not go as much in depth as needed for the tests. Read the textbook front and back over and over and you might do well.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:BIO 1305 - Dr. Miles is amazing!!!! I think he lectures extremely well. I've never seen anyone asleep in his class and I have him at 8 am. When studying, you definitely need to read every single word in every single chapter being covered in the book, which can be a total pain but so worth it. His tests are hard, but totally doable because he gives lots of opportunities for bonus points on Fridays, and a lot of the questions come straight from the information in the book. He is my favorite professor this semester, and if he fits in your schedule, I super recommend him  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - If you took AP bio or have strong previous experience, you might be able to do well. Otherwise, don't even think about taking Dr. Miles. He doesn't teach well and it's really not possible to teach yourself all the material unless you're taking no other classes and can devote all your time to this one. He was also dismissive and not very helpful in office hours.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - Dr. Miles is not an awful professor, but he is definitely not the best. He reads straight off the powerpoints and his tests are extremely difficult. Comments:Biology 1305 - Dr. Miles is a very good intro Biology professor. Yes his tests are very hard I'm not gonnna lie. His class requires hours of studying time every week but it is possible to make an A. There are 4 exams (he drops the lowest) and a final exam. There are also weekly quizzes on masteringbio but they help because they require you to read the book. Which I suggest you do before going to class anyway if you really want to learn the material. He's a good professor who is passinate about biology, knows what he is talking about and tries to entertain as he teaches. If you want to have a challenging class to test your skills and knowlegde this is the class to take. Best of luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Professor Miles is a really nice and helpful guy. He tries to make biology fun and interesting and you can tell he really enjoys the material. However, his tests are HARD. He gives you 50 questions (all detailed and paragraphs that require rereading) for 50 minutes. He drops the lowest test grade and gives some extra credit. Do the mastering bio : practice tests, quizzes (he assigns), and dynamic modules they help a lot! He always lets you come to his office to review tests which also helps. Overall not that bad of a guy but expects you to love and understand biology like he does.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Genetics - Dr. Miles is the best genetics teacher. He's the best teacher, but he's not the easiest. His class is very hard, you need to read the book because he teaches off it directly. There are 4 tests including the final which is cumulative, and there's clicker quizzes in class.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Take him for a challenge and an interesting class!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1306 - Dr. Miles is literally the worst professor I have had at Baylor so far. He reads straight from his powerpoints during lectures and his tests are unreasonably hard. The questions he asks on the tests go far beyond the scope of the powerpoints and even the textbook itself. Multiple choice tests with occasional open ended responses. Some people including myself use easynotecards to try to help, but even that is not much help. I do not know where he pulls these questions from. Avoid his class at all costs.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2017-05-03

Comments:BIO 1305/1306 - Dr. Miles is very knowledgeable about what he teaches, but he does read straight off the power points and adds some information in. It's hard to know what is important from his lectures because he floods you with information. The best idea is to read every chapter because his tests are mostly from there with a few quizlet questions thrown in. I don't like his tests because he makes them about application rather than strictly knowledge. Even if you know the information well, you will be challenged to answer the 50 questions on the test in the hour that you have, due to the complexity and almost contorted nature of his questions. He is always willing to help his students and very helpful in office hours, but he isn't very available because he teaches at MCC too. He doesn't do extra credit. In 1305, he drops your lowest test grade. 1306, he doesn't. Our 1306 class was doing so bad on the tests that he decided to drop our lowest test. Overall, I would take a different teacher if you don't like reading textbooks for hours or have the time to commit to it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIC 2437 - I had Dr. Miles for Natural World I. The class is team taught like most BIC classes for lectures with each professor teaching a unit. Dr. Miles lectures were not my favorite, so I can see where these other reviews are coming from with him being pretty boring. The small groups, however, are different than most BIC classes because they are taught by different groups of students. You always have to turn in a report on the reading for small group, but he grades much easier than other professors from what I've heard people with other professors say. I would definitely recommend him for Natural World!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305/1306 - I took Miles for both Bio 1305 and 1306. I made a B in 1305 and a C+ in 1306. He was an average professor but his tests were more than he taught or were in the book. I made C's and B's on most of them with lots of studying. I would say you should take him if it's between him and Chacon. He's nice and will help you if you go to office hours. He also gives extra credit on his tests for going to SI.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2016-11-19

Comments:BIO1306 - Dr. Miles is not a good professor. He is not awful, but he does not try very hard to be good. His lectures involve him reading off the slide. His exams are much more detailed than they should be, and honestly unfair. He is disorganized and sometimes I'm fairly certain that he is making up information when he doesn't know the answer. He will assign mastering and make it due the next class without telling you. This course is challenging, but with the right professor it is manageable. Miles is not the right professor. There are many better professors than him, but there are also worse ones.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1306 - yes this is a difficult class, but its so doable. I would recommend reading each chapter before coming to class and then rereading the material before the test. Also, use easynotecards of the biology textbook for extra questions. The questions on easy notecards are very similar to the ones on the test. Also, if you copy and paste the mastering biology questions into quizlet you can find additional practice problems. Read the book twice and do lots of practice problems to get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 BIO 2 - DO NOT TAKE MILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is like he ENJOYS people in his class failing. I had to work 20+ hours per week in his class JUST to barely make a B!!!!! If I would've studied just a week before, I would definitely have made a C. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a bad reader and I consider myself pretty intelligent. HIS TESTS are IMPOSSIBLE. And I made an A in bio 1 1305. He is the worst teacher imaginable and just reads off the power points. Also, he will NOT curve. OVER HALF THE STUDENTS IN HIS BIO 2 CLASS MADE a C OR WORSE.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 130 - If you like to study on your own, then this class is great. His lectures are him reading to us the powerpoint which the company that wrote the book gave him. Unlike other professors I have heard about, Miles strictly bases his tests on what the book says, not on what powerpoints he uses. He is pretty humorous at times but not really. The tests are difficult only if you didn't read the book. Read the book, do the mastering bio since it will boost your grade in the end. They are easy, all the answers can be found using google. Do not let this huge 15 percent chunk of your grade go to waste. He drops a test in the end which is nice but is expected of most professors.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - Pros: -Little to no homework, unless you count studying. -Class is average freshman size (around 45 people). - Very straightforward class -All the material you need is in the books. - Tests are solid with no tricks or gimmicks. Cons- Class is taught through powerpoints (can get very boring) -Material is covered fast. - Tests can be difficult for some. Rules to make an A. 1. Always do MasteringBiology. 2. Take small notes in class to get the main idea. (Don't write word for word) 3. Cram the last 2-3 days before the test.(Go through all the chapters and write notes and compare them to the notes you look in class.) 4. Take the test with exactly 6 hours of sleep to optimize circadian rhythm. 5. Profit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:genetics - Dr Miles is a pretty solid instructor. He wasn't cut above the rest but he also wasn't insane. In terms of his personality, he was a little bit of a jerk. In terms of his teaching, it was good enough to get me through the class with a good grade. He liked pop quizzes when I took him, I hope he doesn't do those anymore. He had started transitioning to clicker questions which were awesome--if you paid any attention during his lecture you should've got all the points. his tests were hard. They had multiple choice, matching and short answers. While it was challenging, it was generally predictable. If you went to class, took notes and then compared your notes with his, you KNEW what would be focused on in the exam. Minimal information was taken from the book and he provided the solution to the questions he assigned for studying. Overall, the class was pretty mild. You will learn but you won't be murdered with an ungodly amount of work. Highly recommended.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - This class was fairly easy for me, mostly because I have already taken AP Bio (same textbook, same powerpoints, & same queue from which he draws the test questions). Therefore, I cannot be the best judge of whether or not he was good at lecturing as I found it difficult to focus on info I was already familiar with. We had i-Clicker quizzes everyday which sometimes were tricky. However, he always explained the answers well, and those questions were ultimately test questions, so they helped in the long run even though my grade on them was not the best. His on-line powerpoints were helpful, & the MasteringBio was generally not to hard, but a helpful study tool. His tests were not easy. Even if you had the textbook memorized, you would not do well on the test unless you actually understood the material & were able to make connections between pieces of info- fortunately, that's my strong point. He drops one test grade, & all of his questions are multiple choice. You can go to his office later & ask questions about the answers you marked incorrectly on the test, but you cannot take home the test. He will explain in pretty decent detail. I honestly think he could have done a better job picking out test questions. Nevertheless, I did fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Genetics - If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Miles for genetics definitely do that. I took it last semester and it was really easy. He posts the questions with the solutions manual on blackboard for all of the questions in the book. If you study these you will make a very high A on every test. I found genetics to be the most interesting class I\'ve taken and having Dr. Miles as a professor made it even better. He gives quizzes almost every week which are not bad. He also gave separate iclicker quizzes for extra credit as well. He teaches straight from the power points the book came with which can be a good or bad thing depending on who you are. The final was easy for this class also. The lab was the easiest lab I\'ve taken. The TAs are very helpful and each lab is very short. The mid term and final for the lab are super easy. You should have no problems getting in A in the lab and in Dr. Miles' class. From what I have heard about Dr Moenke's class I am very thankful I decided to go with Dr. Miles.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - This class was awful. The entire 50 minutes all he did was read from the power points provided by the textbook company, with very little explanation aside from that. Then, we were tested on EVERY SINGLE TINY DETAIL. We had iclicker quizzes about every other day the second we walked in the door. Since I was usually late to class this meant I failed most of them. I got an A average on the tests but with my iclicker participation grade averaged in at something like 25% of our grade I got a B. Do not take this class if you can avoid it!!!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - This class is hard. Not because of who teaches it but because Bio is just hard. Miles is an extremely nice and helpful person but all he does is read off of powerpoints which is not exactly something you want out of a teacher. I-clicker quizzes were a participation grade as well as attendance and mastering bio. Easy grade. However, the tests are ridiculously hard and usually curved. Final is also really hard. Scored high enough to get my grade rounded up. STUDY and pray.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:intro to bio - Great man very willing to help anytime you have questions. His attendance with the iclicker at the beginning of the class does seem strenuous but many times he has multiple questions throughout the class so you have multiple chances to sign in. He also informed me in person he does not like failing people for absences as long as the attendance rate is not completely ridiculous. He does zoom through lectures but if you use notes from his class to guide you through your reading you will do exceptionally well in his class. Tests are difficult but he gave 6-10 point curves on EVERY one of our tests. This is incredibly generous and was glad to have him as my first Bio teacher at Baylor. Would definitely recommend him to any serious student  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIO 1305 - Where do I start...I took his class at 8 am. I'm pretty sure he's well aware of how far away the BSB is from everything but he insisted on giving his iClicker quizzes the second the clock struck 8....not friendly behavior. Anyways, he doesn't teach, he reads the powerpoints made by the textbook company (as if college students need to be read to for 50 minutes at 8 am). His tests were ridiculously hard and some of them were way too long for a 50 minute time frame. I took 2 years of IB (advanced) biology in high school and the tests were still hard. You learn nothing from class itself, the textbook is your best friend. I definitely wouldn't recommend taking him!!!!! DON'T DO IT.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - I have to make a 96 on the final to get an A in the class but i just wanted to say that i got an A just cuz. Well, first he does NOT teach in class really. he reads off of powerpoints and thats it. His tests are kinda hard usually test average is below 70 but he curves. One time he gave us 6 point curve cuz everyone did really bad, and plus he drops one test.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - BIO 1 - Jonathan Miles is a nice man, but he does not teach. His lectures instead consist of reading off of the power point that the textbook company made. His texts are ridiculously difficult, and they are unfortunately pretty much the only basis of your final grade. The only people I know that are making an A in his class took years of Bio in highschool and study ridiculous amounts. I do not recommend him at all.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - I created an account on BUbooks to talk about this man. I am in no way trying to be disrespectful, and I full recognize that I received a D in this class. But, that still will not keep me from talking about him. Here it goes... You have 4 tests and a final exam. The tests are so ridiculously difficult. I studied for hours on end, days in advance, etc. I read practically the entire book, wrote down every single word on the powerpoints, and went to class every single day. The SI instructor was also awful. I would go to her sessions and we would receive e-mails with multiple mistakes that she insisted were right during the time...... Dr. Miles is a nice man, but I DO NOT recommend him to ANYONE!!!!! Even my pre-med friends who get deans list every semester are failing his class. His lectures and homework do not reflect his tests. Going in to talk to him didn't help either....all in all..do NOT TAKE HIM! I WARNED YOU! RAHHhhhh  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1305-09 - Dr. Miles is a great teacher! He is a great lecturer, is always more than willing to answer any questions and is so helpful and so reasonable. I would recommend his class to anyone! I'm not a biology major or even a science major and I thought his class was very interesting, and often very fun. Dr. Miles is great!  - Grade In Class:A
