Comments:1305 - guys please take this man you won't regret it. there are zero exams in this class just quizzes (open note) and papers. don't worry b/c he gives sm extra credit throughout the course which i highly recommend doing just in case. he is so funny and lowkey out of pocket a lot of the time. you'll never be bored in there.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC1305 - take dr. pieper, this is the easiest class i have ever taken. as long as you go to class and do the quizzes you will get an A. he gives an insane amount of extra credit that is added to your overall course grade. he is a really nice prof and the environment is really chill  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - ok, so here's the deal. most chill dude ever. so easy everything is open note and online. if you pay attention in class and write the SEIL papers you get an A. he gives so much extra credit it's insane. do them all as insurance. the final paper isn't too bad. he's kinda biased and narcissistic but if you want an easy class you def will get an A and it won't be boring.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC 1305 - YOU NEED TO TAKE HIM!!!!!! This class is super easy! Piper is a great guy who just wants the best for his students! The class is built up of 5 quizzes and 5 written assignments consisting of around 600 words. The quizzes are open note which makes them super easy. Pro tip is to get the online textbook because you can search the whole book for the answers. He also curves the quizzes which helps! The written assignments were easy as well, just took a bit of thought and were kinda annoying but I put in minimal effort and never got below 90%. At one point I was nervous I would not get an A, but at the end of the semester he starts offering A TON of extra credit, and this is where things got good. When you complete his extra credit, i.e. watching a movie and writing about it, you get whole percentages added to your grade. I was at 91% and did one of the extra credit assignments and then was at 93% because, for every extra credit assignment you complete, you get a whole 2% added to your grade. Also no final! If you can get in you need to take him. I also learned stuff and thought it was interesting, he is FUN! 10/10 rec!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC1305 - Dr. Pieper is awesome! He’s an amazing teacher who really brings the material to life. He really focused on teaching content in a way that shows how sociology is really applicable and usable in everyday life. There was one class on sexuality in which some of the content, especially different genders, were things I don’t think Baylor spiritual life would be happy with him saying but apart from that I always really enjoyed all of his classes. There were 5 quizzes worth 30% of the grade, 5 500 word essays also worth 30%, the final was 25% and then participation was 15%. He offered up to 10 points on top of your grade of extra credit and quizzes and the final were open book so you can focus on learning from and enjoying the class material instead of stressing about your grade. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a chill and interesting elective!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC 1305 - he was a decent lecturer, super super bored in his class but not hard . he has a few assignments but they dont take long, 5 quizzes and a final. final throws some curveballs at you but it is online so you can use google and notes and what not. if you are trying to just get the credit and dip - take this class. if you want to learn soemthing maybe find a different prof  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC 1305 - Dr. Pieper is SO FUNNY. We never left this class without the whole class laughing at something he said. This class was pretty chill and a nice break in the day, however, I found there was a lot of busy work that was time-consuming. We had to write 5 essays, but each one took a substantial amount of research. The quizzes are easy and you can take them with your friends, but I would definitely recommend reading the book to help! Overall, this class was pretty easy and Dr. Pieper is amazing and so nice & funny!! I could not recommend him enough!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - take him. so funny. such an easy a. he gives SO MUCH extra credit I think I ended with over a 100. Quizzes are easy. even the final was open note. also a pretty interesting class  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - A course that will make you wish you were a sociology major. Only requires online discussion, five papers, and five quizzes with a final exam this is practically open-book. Piper is a great guy even if you are not liberal (my friends), but if you are liberal (me), he is a breath of fresh air. It may seem like he has an agenda, but he is presenting data, not just what he thinks. I had friends search for more traditionalist or conservative sociology data to challenge him, and it was never black and white, they could only find stuff a little different than what we heard in lectures or read. I wish I had taken sociology before my junior year, but this will be a highlight of my time at Baylor, either way. Definitely one of my top 3 favorite profs so far.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - VERY EASY A - the workload is light and the assignments are simple. The class is interesting and the grading is fair. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities as well. If you are going to take this class, Pieper is a good choice.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-05-14

Comments:SOC 1305 - I agree that Pieper's class is relatively easy and only requires discussion posts, 5 essays, 5 quizzes, and an open-note final exam. Pieper is not bad at teaching, HOWEVER he constantly includes liberal ideology in his lectures. He offers many extra credit opportunities which comes in clutch, BUT almost all of these opportunities were centered around liberal teachings. Honestly, I think he does this on purpose so that he cannot get in trouble for teaching propaganda if it is an optional assignment. I gave a 4 for helpfulness because his TA is readily available, but provides unclear feedback on the essays that makes it hard to know what to do better next time. Not a bad class, not a hard class, just be prepared for liberal propaganda.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Pieper is the best professor ever. His class was very engaging and doable. He always welcomes students during office hours and takes time to actually get to know them. Plus, he offers tons of extra credit which makes the class super easy. Take him!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - I LOVE PIEPER. he is the best teacher i have had in my college career. he is very compassionate about his job and the material and he makes his class so fun. his tests are very easy and he offers A LOT of extra credit. he barely has homework, some quizzes and 3 papers, but the papers are not bad at all. i recommend him to everyone i know and i hope everyone gets the chance to take him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - One of the best professors I've had during my four years at Baylor. He is engaging, passionate about the subject matter, hilarious. It's very clear in group discussions that he's genuinely interested in students' opinions and personal experiences. I learned a ton in this class and never left a lecture without laughing out loud.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC 1305 - Dr. Pieper is AWESOME!! He covers all of the material that you will need to know for the course, while making it super interesting. Not to mention he is hilarious! There are 3 papers, tests, and quizzes. Read the textbook for the quizzes, as they are straight from the readings and fairly specific, but definitely not too difficult. A review sheet is given for the test which covers all of the information you need to know, so there are no curveballs. He also gives MANY extra credit opportunities that can greatly increase your grade. DO THEM!! He is also available for office hours that are very helpful. Overall I greatly enjoyed this class, take Pieper!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Dr. Pieper is hands down my favorite professor at Baylor!! He is so encouraging and really wants you to succeed. Go to office hours and get to know him because he wants to help you!!! You HAVE to read the textbooks or else you will not pass his quizzes, they are not difficult if you do the reading but almost all the questions are specifically from the reading(very detailed). He has three quizzes, three papers, and three exams, none of which are super challenging. His tests are easier than his quizzes and the TA's grade all the papers. He offers a ton of extra credit, so make sure to do that! He also holds review sessions the class before every test where he goes over the entire review sheet (nothing that is not on the review sheet will be on the test, so DO THAT!). He is the funniest, kindest, and most caring man I have ever met and I fell in love with sociology because of him! Please please take him!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SOC 1305 - *ATTENTION ALL PRE-MEDS* This review pertains specifically to pre-meds but is applicable to all study disciplines. Simply, do not take this class for the following reasons: you think SOC 1305 will help you on your MCAT, you were advised to take this course for your behavioral science credit, you are searching for the slightest form of academic rigor. SOC 1305 is not a course (regardless of professor) that will prepare you for the psychology/sociology section of the MCAT, the testing is very different, along with the material. This is not a required course for medical school admission (at least with every school I have seen) so you might as well take some other behavioral science that stimulates your thoughts in a way that interests you (by no means is this review trying to deter someone's interest in sociology). Difficulty-wise, let's just say the distribution is very A heavy. An incredible amount of extra credit is given (about 10% of overall grade) and most assignments are graded leniently. Attending class/reading is not exactly a priority but does help the understand of material. Dr. Pieper is actually phenomenal at providing creative ways to learn and remember concepts. Reasons to take this SOC 1305 (Pieper specifically): interest in sociology, need for an easy A, fill fulltime hour requirements, already overbearing schedule. This class has 2 tests and 1 final (8 T/F, 25 MC; 15% of overall grade each), 3 quizzes (15 questions with one often dropped; 5%) based on reading, and 3 SIEL's (an essay) which are 10% of overall grade each. Reading (HW) is reasonable. I am glad that I have taken this class because the concepts and lessons have broadened my perspective on several social/political issues, but do not believe that this a course you should take because you believe it is necessary. Great Professor, awesome person, niche class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-10-24

Comments:SOC 1305 - This class should be pretty easy if you attend lecture and read the books. Piper is so funny and I don't think there was a single class where the entire class did not laugh out loud at least once. He gives fairly detailed quizzes over readings, pay close attention to names, vocabulary, and just generally anything in the book that seems slightly tricky or possibly extraneous, because guaranteed that will be on the quiz. Tests are very easy, and if you're struggling, theres tons of EC documentaries you can watch to boost your grade. He is a Baylor professor through and through, very personable, passionate, and driven to help his students open their minds to the problems around them. This was an amazing class that I would take again in a heartbeat.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-21

Comments:1305 - Dr. Pieper is easily one of the greatest professors at Baylor! He makes class so interesting and relates the topics and themes to the students. Also, he is hilarious. His quizzes are difficult, very specific, and require a lot of reading. I never finished the readings and made a B on all 3 quizzes. His tests are much easier than his quizzes! He also offers a TON of extra credit that will really help your grade! The extra credit is usually watching a film and writing a short essay over it. The class is not easy, but it’s definitely not hard at all and very manageable. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! He adds the points to your overall average grade.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-09

Comments:SOC 43C9 - This class was awesome! Unlike most sociology classes, capstone is a completely different style. You are assigned four books throughout the semester and a final research proposal (no actual research, just the proposal). The books are seperated by chapter and assigned individually to the students to present. So basically, you are responsible for 1 or 2 chapter presentations and the rest of the semester is group discussions over the books. Pieper does an awesome job in picking the books - relatable and tolerable. Best way to end your undergraduate sociology experience.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-18

Comments:1305 - Don't take Pieper. His quizzes are very specific and do not reflect major ideas within the text (also it's a LOT of reading). The exams are worded oddly and based on scenarios so even if you know the material well, you could still get a B- on the exams. He does off some extra credit opportunities but they take forever. Many of my friends didn't have time to do them so they were not able to bring their grade up like I did. The papers are difficult to write because they are very broad but they are looking for very specific things. The highest grade you can get is apparently a 95% but most people get mid to low B's. There are way better and easier Sociology teachers. He's a nice professor and does seem to care about his students but unless you're a sociology major then it's just not worth it.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-15

Comments:1305 - Honestly one of the nicest professors you'll meet. Nearly no work for this course at all. 3 very simple essays throughout the semester, 3 quizzes, and 3 exams. Literally sat on my phone during lecture and made a B+ in the class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-11-13

Comments:SOC 1305 - He's a character. Young, humorous and engaging but the course itself wasn't my favorite. He could sometimes be vulgar and condescending in his lessons when hes trying to be sarcastic and funny. Not a bad professor by any means, but not my favorite. The class was all about social problems, and yet didn't offer steps on how to fix the problems. Much more writing than I had anticipated. I probably wrote 7+ essays (many of which were extra credit). Overall a decent professor, and he makes tons of time during office hours to get to know his students.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Pieper is one of the best professors I have taken. He is engaging, helpful, and knowledgable. His lectures are easy to listen to. The tests are consistent with the lecture material. He gives three quizzes over assigned readings that are easy if you read. He also assigns three short essays that are fun if you enjoy social observation. He genuinely cares about the lives of his students. He encouraged me and was a major part of me changing my major. TAKE PIEPER!!!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-04-21

Comments:1305 - I took Pieper because he had really good BU Books ratings but I ended up dreading his class. It was the most boring class I have been in. I went into it excited because I had friends who had taken Sociology with different professors and what they learned was very interesting and applicable to our lives. What we learn with Pieper is a bunch of theories and people's names and books. We learn about social problems that are "impossible to solve." WHY ARENT WE DISCUSSING SOLUTIONS?? I ended up with an A so I'm not just a salty student who failed his course, but I do not recommend Pieper. There are 3 essays, 2 opportunities for extra credit (total of 4 points added to final grade), 2 exams, 3 reading quizzes, and a final that isn't cumulative (basically a third exam). I didn't participate at all during class and a lot of the time I would space out but I got high A's on all of the tests, quizzes, and papers (which is a miracle. A lot of people did very very poorly in this class because the tests and quizzes are basically a guessing game). There are so many good and interesting sociology professors at Baylor who will teach you how to interact and communicate with people more effectively on a day to day basis. I wanted to learn why people act the way they do (what sociology is supposed to be) and I didn't get that out of Pieper.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-03-22

Comments:1305 - Pieper is a really cool professor. He tries to adapt the material to the interests of the students. Either sociology isn't for me or he didn't stimulate my interest. Not a bad guy or bad class at all but a lot of my peers had better experiences with the course with different professors. Three tests worth 15% (the final is mainly a unit 3 test with a few previous test questions). Three essay projects worth 10% each. Three reading quizzes worth 5% each. Attendance is worth 10% and he takes it by random poll. Class before each test he gives a review in which you can ask him any questions and leave whenever youre ready. His reading quizzes are pretty specific but his exams are mainly lecture based. He does not post his slides and as previously stated he takes random attendance. My biggest advice is to attend class at the bare minimum. Really kind guy with interesting stories.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Intro to Soc - This is the best professor you will ever have at Baylor. Any review that complains about him is wrong because they failed to do the extra credit. There will be multiple assignments that are optional, but if you do 2 select extra papers (really short too with easy grading), you will get 4 points added to your final grade. I went into the final exam and could have made a 40 and still passed with an "A". If you put in a little extra work, there is no problem making an "A". Also, his office hours are extremely helpful because if you go in with questions, he will cut down what you need to know and make the test simple. Take this Class, I can't recommend it enough.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-01-20

Comments:1305 - He relates very well to students. He is so much fun and there wasn't one class that passed by where he didn't make me laugh out loud. The material isn't rocket science by any means, the tests pretty much require you to read and pay decent attention in class and thats it. It was kind of like how a class taught by your cool uncle would be: you could probably get more detail elsewhere, but you probably wouldn’t remember it, and you def wouldn’t have as much fun along the way.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2016-01-02

Comments:1305 - His lectures don't really prepare you for the tests. He just goes over the basic themes of each chapter but none of the details or main concepts, which is what 70% of the test is over. If you read the book though, you're fine. I honestly didn't think his lectures were that interesting. He says it helps you prepare for the MCAT if you're premed, etc. but honestly it doesn't. He only had ONE SINGLE lecture on Sociology in Medicine. Also I know everyone is saying this class is supposed to be easy, but this was my only B and the rest of my classes were biology, chem, and Spanish 4.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-12-28

Comments:1305 - Overall, an amazing professor. He cares about his students and his passion for sociology makes the class more interesting. he gives some free days and all of the essays and extra credit are really easy and usually relate to a video you have to watch.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-12-03

Comments:SOC 1305 - Take his class! His lectures are interesting and he is really funny. Take notes and study the way he tells you to. It is not hard to make an A. There are 2 or 3 short papers you have to write but they are not hard. Great class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-06-08

Comments:1305 - Besides being open-minded and knowledgable, he relates to the students suuuuper well. Believe me, he is a breath of fresh air among all the cumbersome professors at Baylor. His classes are a lot of fun and he makes it interesting because he really enjoys what he does.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-05-22

Comments:SOC 1305 - Pieper is such a fun guy. He curses in class and offers examples that relate to pop culture. He's freaking amazing. That's all. He offers tons of extra credit opportunities, so if you're like me and never even bought the textbook and made high B's on the tests, do the extra credit! They will make the difference between an A and a B. Pieper is fair in his grading. His lectures are interesting and make you actually want to attend.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-05-20

Comments:1305 - Pieper is solid, but you need to be ready to have your ideas and preconceptions challenged, by him and by the material he presents. Very fun discussions, and very reachable for office hours or other questions. Workload was totally managable for me.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-06-02

Comments:1305 - Pieper is a very helpful professor and makes his grad students have generous tutor sessions. This guy loves sociology and cares about students. Read the material. Easy essays and medium difficulty tests.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2014-05-08

Comments:1305 - Pieper is not the worst but he does make this course a little harder than it has to be. It's tricky. You don't have to read at all--don't even get the book. The four SIELs are tricky. You need to email yours to him or the TAs because your grade depends on who looks at it. They're easy to write, but he looks for very specific terms. He is interesting in class and warm-hearted. There are reviews and times for questions, so just show up to class and try to say something and you'll be fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-12-13

Comments:SOC 1305 - TAKE HIM!! It's an easy A if you just do everything he tells you to do! There's 4 quizzes, 4 SIELs (which are written papers over something sociological in your everyday life) I bs-ed all 4 of mine and made 90s. If he offers extra-credit DO IT because he'll give you whatever it's worth. There's 3 exams that are easy (I'm usually not a very good test taker, but made high B's, low A's on them) because he sends out a review with what's on the test and has an in class review where you can ask questions. There isn't a final and nothing is comprehensive. I bought the book, realized I didn't need it, and sent it back. He took attendance the first 3 weeks and didn't really take it after that. TAKE HIM. TAKE HIM. TAKE HIM.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-11-14

Comments:SOC 1305 - Dr. Pieper is a great professor. As long as you go to class and take notes you should do well. He gives more than enough extra credit opportunities, do them! There are four or five two-page papers that you have to write, but they are really not too bad. Dr. Pieper is funny and is a character, so come to class because it's normally interesting and entertaining. I got a lot of extra credit just for showing up on days when a lot of people just happened to be gone. The final is the third test, and all of the tests fairly tested over note and book material. There is a bit of reading, but I was fine without doing a lot of it.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-05-08

Comments:SOC 1305 - Professor Pieper is a really nice guy and a great sociology professor. He's funny and makes the topics interesting. There's three tests, one of which was the final. They're pretty easy and a lot of people stopped doing the reading because the tests are almost based entirely on lecture. The tests are a combo of multiple choice, some true/false, and maybe short answer. There are also 5 short papers where you have to write about sociological events you've observed in your everyday life. All in all, it's a great class, pretty easy. I'd take him again if he taught another sociology class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-12-15

Comments:Intro to Sociology 1305 - Pieper is new to Baylor and he's an excellent addition. He makes learning sociology really interesting. As a person, he's super laid back and easy to talk to and most people go to his office hours just to hang out. As a professor, his lectures usually last the entire class period, but are worth sitting through. He makes jokes constantly and shows videos that are both interesting and totally helpful for his tests. He also gives a review session during a class period the week before the test where he gives you a printed review and opens the class to ask him questions they have from the review. His tests are pretty simple and all I did as far as book work and studying goes was write down the bolded definitions and study those. Only 4 tests, 5 SIELS (open ended papers where you talk about sociological things you notice in everyday life) and 5 quizzes means a relatively easy and well worth it A. I definitely recommend taking him for intro and any other sociology classes he teaches in the future.  - Grade In Class:A
