*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:bu - this chick crazy. her class is forsho a waste of time and i just feel bad for any one who doesn’t have the sense to drop. she try be nice but i don’t do fakes like her, like who give that much work to students. no no no, she is actually a walking joker who disguises herself as a killer clown- drop her class if you somehow find ur self with this lady screeching at you because ur class will definitely be a walking horror show - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:Rel 1310 - DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! She is the antithesis of a good professor. like absolutely psycho crazy. She is bothered by every little thing, her quizzes are so irrelevant and she is a liberal looney tunes. if you believe in the beliefs of pluralism and socialism, she will meet all your criteria. DO NOT TAKE HER, CANN’S CLASSES ARE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, I would rather go through electric shock therapy than be bored out of my mind in her class. Somehow her class is boring and yet she somehow manages to make the quizzes about everything except the material she supposedly teaches. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS. YOU WILL BE MISERABLY SUFFERING EVERY SECOND. also go read my friends review before this, i felt so bad for him because she tanked his grade. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:REL 3345 - If you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr.Cann, please do it. She is an incredibly kind woman who cared more about the students in her class than the class itself. She would bring her dog to class, she invited us to a coffee shop for class and bought us coffee, and she's a brilliant lady with an impressive resume. The class isn't difficult but the tests can be tricky, the answers are in the readings and directly from the study guide. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 3345 - CANDI IS WONDERFUL!! ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD! SHE CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS SO MUCH AND WANTS TO HELP YOU SUCCEED BOTH IN CLASS AND IN LIFE. I WOULD 100% RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE HER! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1314 - Dr. Cann is one of the best professors I have had at Baylor. She makes sure that you understand the content. The journal entries help so much for the test, and she always gives constructive feedback! I definitely recommend her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIC 4374 - I took this class fall of 2021. I actually made an A- in the class, but there isn't an option for that. Dr. Cann is a very confusing person. She is a really nice person, but her class was kind of all over the place. She is clearly very knowledgable and lectures well, but she rarely gave lectures. We watched a LOT of youtube videos that lasted the entire class time, which was really odd and frustrating. Her reading load is pretty intense, too, and don't even think about skipping or skimming it. The reading quizzes are random and quite difficult. I enjoyed the course topic (Argentina and Brazil), but I'm not sure I would take her class again. I think one can manage if it is the only thing that works for your schedule (my situation) or if you're really interested in the topic. Just tread carefully and be prepared to read. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIC 1314 - Dr. Cann can come off very scary and intimidating at first, but she is just like that at first. She makes our classroom very light-hearted and humorous rather than uptight, and she has us make connections with our classmates more than any of my other classes. She teaches a lot through small group discussions and videos, so decide if that is your style or not. When she teaches, she also focuses a lot on what the important topics will be for the test and essays. The BIC curriculum itself is annoying, such as no technology and large groups, but that does not fall under her. She simply enforces those rules. I recommend keeping up with the readings for the pop-quizzes that BIC has. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIC 1314 - Dr. Cann is one of the nicest professors ever!! She does require a bit more than other professors, especially for things such as journal entries, but it ends up to be such a help come test time. She makes her classes super interactive and one time even brought her dog to class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIC 1314 - Dr. Cann is a good teacher. This class is a lot of work, and you better be a fast reader or you won't keep up. I am not particularly fast, so I ended up reading the spark notes for most of the material. It was not uncommon for us to be reading a book or two (heavy material) each week. There are lots of papers and extra assignments that you will have to do. This was by far my least favorite class in the BIC, but I've also never loved history, so this class may be right up your alley if you're into that. This class is very liberal, like most of the classes in the BIC, but you have the opportunity to voice your opinions as well. One thing I liked about this course was that many classes were conversations style and everyone is inputing what they gathered from the material. Tests are hard. Weekly pop quizzes will destroy you (like they did to me) if you haven't read the 40-100 pages assigned the night before. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Social World - I think a lot of Dr. Cann's reviews on this website are unfair. She does tell you her opinion but she is still openminded and always points out both sides of the argument. She is quick to listen to others opinions and points out the downsides to her own arguments. She is very personable and fun. My only complaint is that our small group tended to be off topic and I had to teach myself some to prepare for the test. But I really liked Dr. Cann and would recommend taking her class - Grade In Class:A
Comments:WCV - Dr. Cann has a unique way of teaching that other reviews have likely misunderstood. Yes, there are some youtube videos and students do sometimes have to present parts of the lectures. However, this makes the class extremely fun and engaging. She also visited many of the areas related to this course and has a vast amount of knowledge and passion regarding them. Aside from that, it is obvious that Dr.Cann deeply cares about her students. Not only does she make an effort to get to know every single one of them at the beginning of class, but she will also go out of her way to say hello or wave when she sees her students throughout the day. For extended learning activities she does not mind if we watch a movie from netflix, and, if it is a group event, she goes as well, in order to spend more time with her class. When it comes to the readings and the assignments themselves, she is a fair grader. If you did the readings you should do fine in her class for the quizes, the journals, the midterm, the final, and the projects (like every other BIC class). Overall, I enjoyed taking Dr. Cann's class and would likely take her again if given the opportunity. Nowhere else had I had this much fun in a BIC class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:World Religions - I would not take Dr. Cann again. This was my first time and I though the course would be easy. Dr. Cann is a smart person with a lot of knowledge but she doesn't really share it in her teaching. Her class consisted of half YouTube videos, and half group work answering questions. The class discussions over the group discussions are rushed and basic and he barely lectures. For one topic, she left out a major point, and took off points for everyone that got it wrong on the exam, even though she taught it wrong. She barely goes into depth and expects you to know details. The only way you'll know these details is if you ask her, even then theres a 50-50 chance she'll actually be helpful. To get an A in the course you needed a 95%, on her exams one MC question is worth 5%. There is no room for error. She assigns two papers on site visits, she has very strict instructions concerning the essays, but we did not hear about the site visit until a week before for one, which she gave the wrong address for, and did not show up to. She is not helpful in accommodating for issues that come up and expects you to give your best when she appears to not care about the course or the students. She took 3 weeks to grade the first exam, and 2 weeks to grade the second and the next 3 exams were given back the last week of the semester. She has 2 exams out of 5 put in the grade book, even though she has all the exams and essays graded. Overall I found her very unhelpful, she expected a lot from her students when she did not offer us much. She does not give exams back in time, so you go into multiple exam without knowing how you did or are doing. She very strict on grading even though she isn't clear in class about what she want. Taking this course was not hard but very very frustrating, I did not learn a thing. The only thing good about this course is the workload is not a lot but that's honestly because you have no idea whats going on ever - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:BIC 2340 - Dr. Cann is extremely intelligent and has thought through the subjects she teaches. Additionally, Dr. Cann is excellent at drawing out students and getting them to participate in classes. You can tell that she really cares about each student and wishes to get to know each person and encourage them through her educating style. One thing I like about Dr. Cann is that sometimes she is not afraid to share her views on topics as well her rationale behind those views. Dr. Cann often split students up into small groups and had them discuss concepts from the readings. While somewhat effective when used sparingly, she did this practically every class period for a long amount of time. I felt considerably annoyed at this, as I was not really learning anything but merely talking about what I had learned loosely with others who also had just recently learned the information. What could be much better would be if Dr. Cann would share more and go into more detail over the texts. Then, I would be able to understand each concept in more detail. Part of my frustration stems from the fact that when Dr. Cann expounds more on subjects, I feel that I learn a whole lot more than listening to my peers. There is something to listening to a Harvard grad that simply does not compare with sophomore or junior university students. --Ben P. (I do not believe in completely anonymous criticism). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4374 - Probably the best professor I’ve ever had because she truly cares about getting to know her students. The class itself was relatively easy. I got an A on everything major, but don't slack on the reading quizzes, or you won't get an A!! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:BIC 1314 - As a person, I really do like her. She's nice and intelligent and when she does decide to teach she does a great job. Unfortunately most of the time we just get into small groups and do SONGS with student generated discussion. She answers questions with varying degrees of helpfulness, and though I personally have never gone to her office hours I have heard that she often isn't there. She does, however, answer emails, which is how I tend to ask professors questions anyway. Overall, I will not be taking her again, but she's not a terrible teacher, just not the quality I feel like the rest of the BIC faculty are. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIC4374 - She is really nice. But the course is getting worse and worse. Very lost where the course was going. Lots of readings and pop quizzes. Everyone of the group hates pop quizzes. She is never in her office. She runs off immediately after the class. Don\\\'t take her. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Cultures I - I honestly don't know whether Dr. Cann is a good professor because our class was almost entirely group discussion, projects, and presentations. It makes it fun and easy to stay awake - we even acted out skits one day - but I didn't come to university to be taught by my peers, but by PhDs. I don't want to be taught by my peers when there's someone so knowledgeable in the room, and I feel like I'm wasting my time doing skits and drawing pictures when I have a ton of reading to do. Dr. Cann is a really sweet and helpful person, and she can be really funny and knowledgeable when you get her talking, but I really didn't like how she taught her class or graded her essays. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:World Cultures - 1314 - Dr. Cann is a very nice woman and very smart, but she kind of acted like a celebrity when it came to our small group. She had our PI do a lot of the work, and made it seem like she had to interrupt more important things to come to our class, and would sometimes come late and always dash out right away afterward. She did have us over for supper and would always write back to an email, but then she never sat with us in large group. This may sound kind of silly, but it seemed like other professors cared more about their students and did more to make sure they were on track in the class. Having a professor do the bare minimum doesn't really motivate you to give your all to a class that's really just a core requirement and not in your major. Everyone talks about the BIC having this special culture and stuff, but Dr. Cann could of done a lot more to make that happen. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:BIC 1314 - Dr. Cann is a very good professor and a nice person. The only problem is that her small groups are kind of pointless with the presentations. Overall I still recommend her! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:BIC 2340 - As a student of Social World II, your enjoyment of the course will likely be dictated by how faithful you are to complete your assigned readings. If you choose to take Dr. Cann's section, you'll be part of a highly conversation-based small group (if this is not your cup of tea, I do not recommend Dr. Cann's section to you). She's eager to hear what her students think about the course material, and will encourage you to think outside of the box. Because SWII tends to fall on the T/R 12:30-1:45 time-frame, it can be difficult to get through (hunger/fatigue, etc.). The trick is to tough through it, even if not all of the course material interests you. In SWII, you'll be spending an average of 45 min. reading for each class, with a loose maximum of 2 hrs. reading/writing if you put things off to the end. It isn't incredibly demanding, but if you get behind, you'll be in trouble. The tests measure whether or not you've read the required texts (mult. choice), and whether or not you can think critically about the material & proposed theorists (essay portion). For Dr. Cann, what matters is that you follow the specifics of the prompt before considering your own take on the proposed essay question(s)--ANSWER THE PROMPT! She wants to reward you for following her clear directions, so don't make any mistakes there. As for her lectures, they were often insightful, but did find their effectiveness levied by the strength of class participation that day. If Dr. Cann's office hours were more flexible, I would reward her full-credit for availability. Overall, I'd recommend taking this professor if you're eager to contribute in class, and open to being challenged to look deeper. If you apply yourself and actively contribute your thoughts, you'll make the small group experience better for everyone. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4374 - I don't know who posted below. Which class did you take? Her class was unreasonably boring with heavy reading load. such a drag to go to her class. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:BIC 4374 - Dr. Cann is my favorite BIC professor I've ever taken as well as one of my favorite professors at Baylor in general. She's so smart and has lived in a bunch of different places all around the world. I'm convinced that there's nothing she doesn't already know. The Cultures V (Latin America) class was surprisingly easy compared to what I thought it would be like. It's still a BIC course, though, so don't plan on blowing it off. Especially with Dr. Cann. She's wonderful, though, and nobody should be afraid to take her. - Grade In Class:A
