*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1300 - Dude is super rude and very condescending, however the class isn't particularly hard if you just do the readings. The exams are pretty straightforward too and I haven't gotten anything other than an A on them. The class is more like US in Russian perspective tho... LOL. He LOVES Putin - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - For a History 1300 class, the workload is crazy. You're reading two (if not more) 12-page chapters plus two original source documents from the time period before each class, and must be prepared for a pop quiz on a blank sheet of paper, in which you must remember names, dates, compare ideologies, historical context, and the bigger theme of the US in global perspectives. HOWEVER, if you have a relatively light workload, I strongly recommend taking his class. The entire way I view history has changed due to this incredibly wise and passionate professor's lectures, carefully selected readings, and professional insight. It is obvious that Wingerd wants curious students and is very upfront about the workload from the beginning. It makes sense why he does this, because he teaches his class in a way that the students must be engaged and interested. A lesser workload would not be as conducive to learning. I honestly want to take this class over again to soak up all of the information I know I missed due to the fast-paced nature of the class and my beginner-level understanding of history. If you have the time, take this class. It is so worth it, and Professor Wingerd obviously cares about his students. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr. Wingerd is a really smart guy and a very passionate professor. He get a lot of hate for his teaching style (occasional pop quizzes, boring slides, etc) but I actually found that the pop quizzes basically force you to do the reading with makes the exams super easy. He also provides a study guide for each of the three exams which make it super doable to pass if you use that. The tests are not multiple choice but if you spend literally just an hour the night before studying the terms on the study guide you'll do just fine. He also offers extra credit opportunities before the exams and the final. The final exam is an essay in a blue book with a pretty open-ended prompt intending to prove to him that you learned something in the class (how US history influences international relations). He doesn't seem to grade it too harshly because I got a 102 on it without too much trouble. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - This class frustrated me so much. Dr. Wingerd is excellent about examining all sides of a story, and in that respect, I believe he is a good teacher. However, every class was 50 minutes (or 40 if you had a pop quiz) of the most boring powerpoint slides you have ever encountered in your life, along with a bunch of relatively useless information. There are 3 exams which are all 90% names and 10% essay. Pop quizzes around once a week (usually Fridays based off my own observation) and the final is a long essay. After about two weeks, I gave up on reading his actual textbook because it didn't help me whatsoever. You can chatgpt the documents discussed every time and get the same/better information about the authors, context, etc. etc. As far as the tests, I made practice tests over and over just focusing on the names and practiced writing a few document pairs for the essay portion. As long as you're willing to put in maybe an hour a week studying and are really good with names, you'll do great in his class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:His 1300 - If you put in the work and try, this class is easy. He's a great professor and knows a lot about every topic. You do have some pop quizzes, but if you do the reading and understand, they aren't that hard and get easier every time. Exams are just memorizing the information. As long as you put effort in, you will get a good grade. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - I have mixed feelings about this class. Day one we walked into a pop quiz which was not a good start to the year. the class consists of reading (LOTS OF IT), class participation, quizzes and 3 exams. the reading is fine... he wrote the book so he definitely knows it inside and out. you will have pop quizzes over documents in the reading (10 minutes to write comparing and contrasting them). after your first quiz or two they become pretty easy. I find it so easy to zone out in his class, however you are not allowed to have your phone or laptop out. he definitely knows and cares about the materiall that he's teaching. the class size is small and participation is prt of your grade so definitely keep that in mind. his tests honestly are not that bad. the front is 30 short answer questions (3 points each) and the back is comparing and contrasting 2 documents (10 points). I didn't love this class and I didn't hate it. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIST1300 - I loved him! History is no where near my favorite subject, but he truly made it enjoyable! He offers new perspectives you may have not heard before, however that does make it somewhat controversial. The way he conveys his message came across very well to me, but I think the controversial nature of how he teaches this class explains some of the other reviews. He tries to look at history from all aspects, even considering the "villains" point of view. He does have somewhat of a heavy courseload - however in my opinion the reading does not need to be in full depth as you just need to know the basics of what was written. So, while the readings daily seem like a lot it's not detail specific so reading isn't super necessary. He gives exact rubrics of how he grades and is very fair in my opinion, so I would recommend taking him. Does depend on your style of learning - his tests are fill in the blank, but no tricks whatsoever you just have to memorize names and places. His pop quizzes are just a summary of what you read. Pretty straightforward, but if memory isn't your strong suit maybe not the best class. Overall Dr. Wingerd is a very intelligent man and changed my perspective in many ways and I would recommend taking him even with the workload concerns. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300.23 - If you don't shy away from putting in the work and participating the class, TAKE WINGERD. I really loved his way of teaching, and he always makes it interesting and is available for questions (do not shy away from asking questions!!!). A essay "pop quiz" every week, in which you have 10 minutes to write. For the pop quizzes make sure you include a who, what, where, and when. Most of my quizzes I got 10/10 this way (it's not that hard). He does not post his slides, but he does hold review sessions where he goes over them if you have any questions before the exams. Two exams plus one final which are not cumulative. He gives the prompt for the final at the start of the semester, and explains it pretty well in the review session. For the two exams it's 30 fill in the blanks questions, creating and ID for 6 terms and a short essay that is the exact same principle as the pop quizzes (who, what, when, where, and you're pretty much good to go). Essentially, if you're good at memorizing terms and dates (about 117 terms per exam), and are unafraid to put in some work (readings for every week of an average of ~40 pages per week or more), then take Professor Wingerd. Also, note that he does not allow electronics in class, doesn't let you go to the bathroom, and is not afraid to call you out in front of everyone (usually indirectly but if you're pushing it he will say your name). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:his 1300 - DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is the worst professor I've ever had at Baylor. Workload is extremely hard for a Gen Ed course. It seemed like he enjoyed when students failed. Any time you would try to participate in class he would be condescending towards you and makes you feel discouraged (but took participation for a grade). Test are unnecessarily hard. I took a 3000 level Psychology course and made higher grades than his class. One thing he did well at was being available for questions or exam review and providing clear directions. However, this class is Gen Ed and not worth tanking your grade by taking this professor. - Grade In Class:F
Comments:HIS 1300 - I personally really liked Wingerd's way of teaching. However I will say that the other reviews are very accurate of his workloads and random pop quizzes. Also if your shy this is probably not the class for you because if nobody talks he's not afraid to cold call. Its very clear he cares a lot about History, he just has a peculiar way of teaching and explaining that if it doesn't click with you it doesn't click and you can't force it. If you are looking for an easy history class, that doesn't require more than an hour of work a week this is not the class for you. If your looking for a class that is a bit challenging then you have found it. Things to know about this class: Wingerd doesn't allow any electronics and will call you out on them(i.e phone, laptop or ipad), He does not post the slideshow after class so write down good notes (because you're not allowed to take photos), almost 50 pages of reading before each class period (throughout the entire semester), random pop quizzes (either a label map quiz or an essay quiz), test were fairly simply(fill in the blank, short answer questions, one long answer question, and ten label map questions),class participation is necessary every period. All in all he's not that bad of professor just a man teaching a subject that's not really interesting. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - DO. NOT. TAKE. HIS. CLASS. Dr. Wingerd is an incredibly talented and interesting man, but his class will eat you alive. If you genuinely have a love for history and you're a fast reader that's good at memorizing a large amount of info very quickly, you'll probably do fine in his class, but if you are just taking HIS 1300 for the Baylor requirement PICK SOMEONE ELSE. He doesn't share any of his powerpoints, doesn't tell you what information you need to be paying attention to, he doesn't allow laptops in his class, and exams are awful. Each class he gives you a ridiculous amount of reading to do which took more time than any other class I had, he gives pop quizzes which are like essays you have 10 minutes to write almost every class or every other class, and his 2 exams are free response with a crazy amount to study for. The material in this course is genuinely so interesting and Dr. Wingerd is a cool guy, but I promise this class is not worth the strain on your mental health. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Professor Wingerd exhibits highly unprofessional conduct, displaying rudeness towards all students and seemingly harboring a desire to hinder their success. His teaching style involves bi-weekly chapter quizzes that assess hyper-specific details, which are objectively graded. The exam format is particularly challenging, featuring numerous fill-in-the-blank sections that provide definitions but lack a word bank. This section alone comprises approximately 30 questions. Additionally, Professor Wingerd frequently engages in lengthy tangents that are unrelated to the course content. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Professor Wingerd resided in Russia for an extended period and is a sympathizer of Vladimir Putin. Consequently, any negative comments directed towards Putin are likely to elicit a stern response from Professor Wingerd. I strongly advise everyone to avoid this course and Professor Wingerd’s teaching style. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:his 1300 19 - You can tell he's clearly knowledgeable about this subject but it doesn't work to your advantage at all. RANDOM pop quizzes (written), 20+ pages of reading every night, all exams are written the first section are terms (there are usually over 100 that you need to study but he only chooses 20), the second section is 6 short answer questions where you choose between two terms and define one, he's extremely picky with what he's looking for, then theres the long essay section, and finally a map section. Also the final was horrible 6-8 page written essay, with a bunch of super specific guidelines. This is not an easy class and it will give you anxiety, do not take it unless you LOVE history!!!! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1300 - DON'T TAKE HIM. His grading system is not designed for the average student to succeed because your grade depends on exams and pop quizzes that you will never expect. His exams are free responses with no word bank or anything. Dr. Wingerd knows his stuff and is very intelligent but is poor with his availability and his students. He gives poor advice when asking for tips for studying and stuff; he doesn't post his slides on Canvas or the final review. His readings are a lot and are usually assigned over a single day, with an expectation of you having full understanding. His class may be nice if you're really into history, but if you are a student who is just trying to get history credit done, don't take his class. It's unnecessarily difficult, and it takes a lot of time to understand his class. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:HIS 1300 - I would not recommend taking this class. Mr. Wingard is a very polite and knowledgeable professor. He does a great job lecturing and explaining complex topics. However, his grading system is only reliant on tests and pop quizzes you won't expect. From my experience, Mr. Wingard won't willingly let his students leave the class even if it is just to use the bathroom or take a phone call. His tests are mainly free-response questions with no word banks or multiple-choice. He assigns chapter readings every night, often being very time-consuming. In my honest opinion, this class was made to be way harder than it needed to be. In the end, I adjusted myself but initially, I really struggled to study for tests and apply the reading assignments to the pop quizzes. I also feel like Wingard's grading setup just isn't that ideal for a majority of students to succeed considering half of your grade is dependent on tests and the rest is dependent on random pop quizzes with very specific prompts you need to write about. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1300 - Took him over the summer going into freshman year. Was my first college class and my worst. He failed my final paper because I wrote poorly about Putin. Didn't realize until later that he apparently lived in Russia for a couple of years and he likes Putin. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1300 - Unless you're super interested in the middle east and actually know what you're talking about, just don't take this class. He clearly enjoys teaching and is very knowledgeable about the subjects of this class but the reading assignments were too much and the pop quizzes stressed me out to no avail. I got a hang of his style by the end but its just not worth it unless you're interested in the material or a history major or something. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1300 - I would not recommend taking this class with him. While the professor himself is a pretty interesting and 1/2 decent guy his class is not. He makes you buy HIS OWN BOOK. Cost like $150. You have to read 2-3 chapters of his book before every class as there are random pop quizzes. These pop quizzes are going to be comparing and contrasting two random points you went over in the book. They are worth 20% of your grade and I've never seen someone who wrote less than 1/2 a page get a 9 or 10 on them. Ive written a full page and gotten 8-9s before. He did have 4 pop quizzes in a row to "prove to use he could" DICK MOVE. His tests are not the worst as long as you can memorize(my quizlets (HIS 1300 wingered, Baylor University) were great for the 1st section of test which is 60% of test grade. its 30 fill in the blanks with names or events without a word bank. section 2 worth 30% is writing a paragraph on a random even (total of 30-40 events and he picks 12 at random and you choose 6) and then a 1 page paper comparing and contrasting for the last 10%. I would like to add as well participation is 10% of your grade and I asked several questions and got 0/100 on 1/3 participation assignments. and when I asked him about it he said what I said wasn't good enough to count at participation. They were full on questions. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:HIS 1300 - I took him for HIS1300 over the summer, and I thought his class felt badly organized and unnecessarily challenging in ways that weren't really relevant to the material. It always bothers me when I have to pay over $100 for a textbook (Wingerd's own book, apparently) for a summer course. I also disliked his policy of requiring discussion posts to be submitted 12 hours before the deadline. ]I do agree with other reviews here saying that he's a difficult grader, but he is more inconsistent in his expectations than he is difficult. The first three discussion posts were graded strictly, but beyond that it seemed like he was grading more for completion. This is frustrating because of the sheer amount of readings he assigned in such a short amount of time. I didn't have any problems with the textbook, but I think that requiring a detailed summary of 4-5 book chapters at a time for individual discussion posts (which, again, were due at noon 3 times a week, rather than midnight) was a little excessive. This is an 1300 class, I don't think the course load needs to be so punishing. Overall, I think Dr. Wingerd is a highly knowledgeable historian who should be less restrictive with his deadlines and more realistic about how he structures his assignments for the summer course. If you're considering taking his class, do not take it over the summer (especially if you have more than one class to worry about!) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Taking this class in the summer is no joke. It is very reading intensive. If you actually do the readings and complete the assignments, this course is not difficult and Dr. Wingerd is a very reasonable grader. At first he graded a little harder and I was a bit concerned but as I learned exactly what his expectations were, I rarely got below 10/10 on an assignment. I actually LOVED his textbook, which he wrote. It challenges the confirmation bias we often have as Americans by providing external perspectives on American international relations and involvement. If you take this class seriously, you can learn a LOT. I very much enjoyed it. Dr. Wingerd is a bit dry in his feedback, but fair and reasonable. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - If you are looking for an easy blow-off class this is not it. However, Dr. Wingerd is an incredibly knowledgeable and interesting professor. Everyone that I talked to who finished the class was glad they did as he changes your outlook on many historical events and creates a far deeper knowledge of world events and how they relate to the US. The only homework for the class is doing the reading before each class which is about 20 pages or so but you need to read it thoroughly as there are random pop quizzes. The tests are difficult but at the beginning of the year he posts a study guide that lists all the terms that can appear on the test so if you keep up with studying the terms the guide an A is very achievable. I would recommend this class to anyone as I found that I learned more in this class than any other i had this semester. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - He is very unforgiving and doesn't care about his students. He's also looking to embarrass people any chance he gets. He doesn't want his students to succeed; he wants to see how difficult he can make life for them when it's only aprerequisite class. Tough tests and the classes are long lectures. Don't take this class if you aren't passionate about history because the workload will affect your other grades, too. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:HIS 1300 - Wingerd is very knowledgeable regarding US history. He expects to read every day but the readings are directly from the textbook he wrote and only had several pages per chapter. He also requires us to speak a couple of times between exam dates in class regarding readings for participation credit. Also, there are usually 4 exams worth 75% of the grade and can't be dropped, so try not to bomb the exam twice and you should be able to hang on to an A. He also does random reading quizzes in the first 10 mins of class and 1 or 2 of them can be dropped so prepare for that. Overall, if you enjoy history then this is for you. If you don't like speaking or doing readings every day, I suggest finding a different professor. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1300 - There's a lot of reading required before each class and he chooses random days to give short answer quizzes over the reading. His exams are difficult and he doesn't give good feedback. He also takes a participation grade, not based on attendance, but on how much you speak out in class, so I don't recommend this class to introverts or those who have trouble speaking out in class. He also never replied to my email. Overall, I would NOT recommend taking his class. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS 1300 - For a 1000 level history class, this course is really hard. Expect to read about 3-4 chapters before each class because you never know when he wants to quiz you over the readings. His exams, in my opinion, are hard and all 4 of them count as 75% of your grade. It is fill-in-the-blank as the first portion of the exam, and it would be people's names and he doesn't give you a word bank. This might sound easy as first but the descriptions he gives on the exams are NOT very obvious unless you really read everything and understand all aspects of those people, which sometimes spread out through many chapters. The essay part of the exam is the second portion and is only worth 10 points, and the fill-in-the-blanks part is worth 90 points!! Though he gives extra credits to replace one of your quiz grades, it takes a lot of time to do as well (bc it's an essay) and he did not give a reasonable time frame to do them (at least for my class) if you are taking other harder science classes in the same semester. If you love history, this class may be for you. If you want to take a more chill class because you already have harder classes to worry about, DON'T TAKE HIM!! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS 1300 - The readings are a lot but if you manage your time well it's not too bad. He's very kind and gave us a lot of extra credit opportunities which I don't think he gets enough credit for. There were multiple chances to replace quiz grades and get bonus points on tests. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - He is a really nice guy and great proffesor but this class is so much work for a gen ed. Prepare to read 45min-an hour per class, so twice a week. The tests are so hard and fill in the blank, with no word bank. This is harder than my pre-med bio course and is my lowest grade. There are pop quiz essays over the readings. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS 1300 - Professor Wingerd is very knowledgeable about history. He has unannounced quizzes about once every week or two weeks. The exams were very easy, but the daily readings were quite lengthy sometimes. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIST 1300 - literally the worst professor i’ve ever taken. not only lied about the resources to use on our final paper, gave me a ZERO without an explanation and accused me of academic dishonesty for using historical dates in my 2,500 word essay and reported me to the honor council without ever telling me anything was wrong. do NOT take his class - Grade In Class:C
Comments:HIS 1300 - Honestly I could not tell you how this guys score is a 72. This class is literally SIMPLE. We have to write no essays, we have very little reading to do and the tests are easy money to study for. There is not technically any homework in this class but the quizzes are essentially homework. There is one 6 question quiz due before every class and you have 10 minutes to complete it. You should have no problem getting 5/6 or 6/6 on every quiz just make sure you do not forget to take one cause that will hurt your grade. Each class goes over 2 chapters worth of content which may sound like a lot but each chapter is literally 8 pages with pictures like it is simple. Every single test there is a study guide and in the study guide he essentially gives you the answers. He gives you anywhere between 65-75 terms(only 30 are actually on the test) that are either names of people, treaties, or battles and all you have to do is have a general idea of what each one is because they are like who is the queen of x country during x war and all you have to do is know the person its literally so simple, just make a quizlet of every term with like a general description of what they did and you will be fine. We have taken 3 out of 4 of our tests and I have not missed a single term. That section is worth 90% of your test and then the last 10% is an "essay" portion where you have to write about a page about two primary sources and compare and contrast them and discuss how they relate to America and hit some other general info on them. These sources are also given to you before hand so you can already know exactly what you are gonna say. Also in these essays he does not grade for grammar or punctuation, all he looks at is did he state the key points of the articles. I really do not know how his score is a 72, I had friends with other history teachers and they did 10 times the amount of work to get a B. Sometimes class lectures can get a little boring but they are important to go to because what he emphasizes in class or talks about a lot is almost guaranteed to be on the test. This guy does everything to set you up for success in the class and the work load is almost nothing including studying for the tests. I would 100% recommend taking this guy I have no idea how his score is so low, I think people just dislike history so he gets a bad wrap but this is probably the easiest history professor at Baylor from speaking to other students. You definitely want to take this guy. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - (Took this class 100% online) Okay, I will be completely honest with you. He's not a great professor. He made us by $90 textbook that HE WROTE and just threw us into this course without any information. All he did was telling us to read 5 chapters from his boring textbook and answer the discussion and take quizzes. However. His class doesn't have a lot of work to do. His due date is funky but once you get everything and put your souls into the discussion because that's where most of your grades come from, you will be okay. I think it would've been better if I took his class on campus. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1300 - I took Dr. Wingerd's HIS 1300 class as an online summer course, but even online I found it easily manageable. The daily readings take time, but are in no way unreasonable. Make sure to put effort into your reading responses, including specific names and dates, not just entering general information. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - He is such a great professor - I don't even like history but his enthusiasm and knowledge made it so interesting. His exams are easy to prepare for - follow the study guide and you will easily get a 90%. If you are willing to put in the work of reading and engaging in class, getting an a will be easy! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 2305 - My class was online and it mostly involved independent study. You do have to teach yourself a lot but Dr. Wingerd makes himself very available if you need any help or guidance. He always encouraged students to contact him with questions and provided good feedback on your work. While I would have preferred an in-person class, I thought Dr. WIngerd was very organized and helpful. I would recommend taking his class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 2305 - I took his online class. He did not make himself very available for his students. He is not responsive to our emails at all. We were basically teaching ourselves. I also find his policies for homework quite strange. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2365 OL1 - *This is only for the online class I took, cannot speak for his normal semester class* Dr. Wingerd starts off the class with a small workload for an online class, only a discussion page and a 500 word essay due every Wednesday. This is not that big of a workload, the problem is that his instructions are vague to non-existent. He will mark points off of your grade for things that you are not told about in the instructions (I.e. taking off points for not inserting enough dates when the instructions dont specify an amount of dates to put into your essay). So I would not recommend the class unless you are ready to deal with sifting through instructions that dont tell you what the teacher wants you to do. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1307 - Dr. Wingerd's class is maybe a little harder than some for a survey class, but he is always willing to help and answer extra questions! He is really objective when talking about history and you can tell he is interested in what he is teaching, so that's really nice. As long as you actually keep up on the readings (as there are pop quizzes about once a week) and participate in class, you will be fine!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2395 - Take Dr. Wingerd!! Historiography is a demanding class no matter who teaches it, but Dr. Wingerd is 100% willing to help you if you come to him and ask questions. If you ask questions outside of class and show that you're really trying he will help you as best he can and be lenient on grading. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2395 - I had heard bad things about this class, but it's a required course so I had to take it, and Dr. Wingerd was the only professor teaching it this semester. DO NOT TAKE HIM, unless you aspire to spend all of your nights reading extremely long passages, boring required books, and tough essays. I very much enjoy history, but this class has made it hard for me to want to continue in my major. The homework consists of large passages of reading assigned basically every class, there are several pop quizzes over the homework readings (a couple are dropped though), a heavily weighted midterm and final, and three essays, with a 2500-3000 word historiographical research paper due the same day as the final. The in class discussions are what carry the class, with some discussion from Dr. Wingerd about the readings, but no classic lectures. Be wary of historiography in general- it is not the easiest class, but Dr. Wingerd makes is so much harder than it needs to be. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1307 - Dr. Wingerd is a great professor, I definitely recommend taking him! Yes, you do have readings before every class, and he does give out pop quizzes but it's nothing undoable as long as you do the short readings. You do have to participate in class by discussing the readings every now and then, and as long as you talk at least once your participation grade should be fine. You do have to put work in for the grade, but as long as you read and study for the test (quizlet is your friend), then you should at least get a B. He is always a great help for the test reviews as well, so definitely utilize his office hours for the review, as well as the papers (ESPECIALLY the papers). There is an essay due before each of his exams, but as long as you don't BS it and do the work, you should get an A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2395 - I would be careful of this teacher. Only join his class if you are ready for a stupid amount of workload, long boring lectures, and if you dont have any choice. I thought the class would be somewhat decent. And I was VERY VERY wrong. In all honesty this class is making me reconsider history at baylor; just because of how awful it is. Save yourself and if he is your only option Godspeed - Grade In Class:C
Comments:HIS 1307 - (Fall 2017) This class was great! Wingerd is amazing. In the beginning, this class seemed like it was going to be rough and Wingerd was a little scary, but this class ended up being my favorite class of the semester. There are specific expectations you have to meet with reading, quizzes, and papers but Dr. Wingerd lays out exactly what you need to do to do well. He was always available for paper revising/test prep and he really wants his students to do well and enjoy the material. I am by no means a History fanatic, but I was actually interested in what I was learning. Don't get me wrong, you DO have to work in this class. But somehow this class made the work not as horrible as other classes.. His study sheets for the midterm and final contain everything you need to know, so if you know the information you will get an A. Take him if you want a good history class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 2366 - TAKE PROFESSOR WINGERD. He is helpful and wants his students to succeed. You do have to work in this class. But he is very straightforward with his expectations and if you follow his expectations you will be fine in his class. He brought his kids to our final exam and is willing to help you do the best you can. I also love history so I did not mind putting in all the hard work but if you follow Dr. Wingerd's expectations and put in the work, you will be fine! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - I seriously loved this class. I took it last fall (Fall 2017) and have since switched to a history major because of this class. Wingerd definitely expects you to know your stuff but if you do the reading (the readings are MAX 7 pages) you will seriously be fine. His lectures are power point based so I understand for some people it is easy to doze off but Wingerd makes history super easy and interesting!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1307 - If you're willing to participate in class like once a week (which isn't too hard) take Wingerd, otherwise don't because your participation grade will get wrecked. His classes aren't as chill because you have to do readings for EVERY class. However, as long as you talk you should be fine. His essays are somewhat hard, make sure you visit his office for those and you should get high grades on those. Wingerd's exams are a lot of work to study for, but if you know absolutely everything on his study guide you will make a high grade on the exam. He puts all the topics on the exam on the study guide. I was able to make 100 on the final just because I knew absolutely everything on the study guide alone. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - Let me start off by saying that I have never written a review and never thought I would. However here I am. I am here to tell you that you should NOT take Wingerd. I have always made the dean's list and never received below a B+, until this class. I was on the waitlist and added the class after 4 class meetings, clearly things weren't off to a great start. Long story short, I felt Wingerd had a personal issue with me for adding late. My paper grades were lower than what they deserved, according to me and class mates; I feel he graded me especially harshly on my tests and in participation (50% for the year, never missed a class and had a 75% on my quizzes). Also he only teaches by powerpoint so the class is dull and boring. He dresses in the most bland way, mostly browns. Also he does two tests all year (50% of your grade). So poor grading system. Overall poor class and bad professor. I would recommend others that are far better (and may I mention easier, especially since it's history. If you don't enjoy it this class will be far worse.) - Grade In Class:D
Comments:HIS 1307 - As someone who enjoys classes built around Powerpoints and lectures, I really enjoyed this course! He posted every reading on Canvas, which was about two short chapters each night. This was AWESOME because I didn't have to buy a textbook for the class. We also had "surprise" pop quizzes on most days of class. These consisted of answering a question about the reading in a paragraph or so. The three main assignments for the class were one-page papers that were supposed to answer a certain prompt. The prompts were posted on the first day of class, so you could easily write all three papers in the beginning. (I'm sure most people wrote them the day before each one was due, like I did) The Final was a little scary to prepare for, because the review given had a lot of information that was only briefly touched on in class or not at all. Dr. Wingerd was a great professor and a kind person too. He would make it a point to learn everyone's name in the class, and ask for class participation during his lectures. (This was a part of your grade) I also really appreciated his style; He wore a lot of paisley. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS1307 - TAKE WINGERD FOR 1307. I will not lie, the first week slightly intimidated me due to the expected amount of reading. But considering each class requires you to read one or two chapters, each approx. seven pages each , I became confident very quickly. He is a nice guy that truly does have a heart. On the first exam (which consisted of 15 terms, 5 short answers, one essay, and a map) I spent too much time on short answers and didn't even get to finish the essay. I was distraught. But I still ended up not losing too many points because I had already underlined the terms and he told me that he "understood that you had the ideas going in the right direction because I know you knew the material. I'm not out to get anyone's GPA." The tests might be a lot to fit in a class slot, but they are very doable if you just keep up with the readings. As long as you speak up at least once per class, you should have a good participation grade (10%) that mixes with the quiz grade. The essays might be vaguer than I would like, but as long as you are competent at writing you should do okay. As the class average on the first two essays were 89 and 90 respectively. While you do have to understand what is going on in the class and keep up with the material, I would not suggest anyone else over Wingerd (the guy that gave me a 91 on a test I could have clearly bombed due to the essay portion). Even though I have heard he has gotten slightly harder in his paper grading since I have taken him, I would not call and 86 class average bad at all. Especially considering each paper is only 10% of your grade. I recommend Wingerd. -MITCHEL - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1307 - Dr. Wingerd was always really nice, he has a strict no phone policy in class, but because of how interesting he made the class I found myself never actually wanting to look at my phone. As long as you read the chapters (which are usually not that long) and answer one or two questions a class, you should DEFINITELY get an A in this class. The analysis papers are really easy so long as you just get the point of your topic right away. I loved this class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2366 - Dr. Wingerd is by far my favorite professor at Baylor! His tests are exactly like the review, and if you study them for a few hours, you should be able to make an A no problem. He is super passionate about what he is teaching and even if you don't like history, you probably won't sleep through it. Do the reading, he has quizzes every now and again. Make sure to speak up in class and have one or two points prepared to talk about every class. That way, you won't have to worry about your participation/quiz grade. He teaches from a PowerPoint, but he is not boring at all. I would take another one of his classes if I needed another credit. Take him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 2366 - Dr. Wingerd is an awesome professor, HIS 2366 is the best class I have taken so far at Baylor. If you like history, you will learn a lot. He teaches from a PowerPoint that he doesn't put online so make sure to take plenty of notes. The homework is just reading from the text, usually around 25-35 pages. He gives three tests and papers, single page, single-spaced. He gives you a study guide for each of the tests which look exactly like the test so you know exactly what will be on it. Make sure you know definitions, a few dates, and some names. Like anything, if you take the time to fill out the review for the tests and read the book, you will do just fine. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2365 - Dr. Wingerd was such a great professor, I cant recommend him enough. If you just do the work he assigns, which is about one 20 minute reading between classes, you'll get full participation for making a comment or two during discussions and easily be able to do his pop quizzes, we had about 5 total. Take thorough notes during lecture, thats exactly what the exam material is over. If you prepare well and are a decent student you really shouldnt have a problem with his class. His tests are all open ended so you need to be very familiar with people, places, events, and legislation... He doesnt emphasize particular dates which is awesome. Overall, one of my favorite professors at Baylor so far. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2365 - Dr. Wingerd is an amazing professor! He is very passionate about what he is teaching, and makes the lectures very interesting. We have assigned reading before every class, and he has about 11 quizzes based on the reading. He asks a broad question from the reading and as long as you bring up points from the reading, you will get full credit. The first test was hard, but he gives a study guide and for the second test you will know how to study. Very enjoyable class- and I don't like history! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1307 - Dr. Wingerd is awesome. As long as you go into the class knowing you'll have to put in a considerable amount of work, you will get an A. The readings aren't bad, quizzes are a gimme, if you put thought into the papers you will be rewarded with A+'s, and as long as you buckle down and study for the tests you will do just fine. For a real deal history class, if you put in the time you should..this is an easy A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - This class is not as bad as it is led on to be. You do have to read every night, BUT it really isn't that much reading and the documents are very interesting, if you are interested in history. *If there is a reading out of the text book, I'd suggest you outline it and define the vocab words, it will definitely help you for the tests! I didn't do this and spent A LOT of time trying to do this last minute. He puts the the review for the tests on Blackboard fairly early, just start studying early, you will do fine. Honestly, I crammed for every test and got low B's on them. The papers are not bad at all and are very thought provoking. Spend an hour thinking and an hour writing and you are good. *He talks pretty fast and does not post his powerpoints on BB which is lame, so I would definitely suggest recording every class. *Honestly, all of these suggestion are things I thought of after the fact. I just needed to get this class over with and graduate. I got low B's on both my tests and papers. What dragged me down to a C was the 40% I got in class participation. I never talked at all in class and I missed a lot of classes because I was preparing for grad school and got mono at the end of the semester. Overall, if you are willing to go to class, participate, and put in the work, I think it would be feasible to get a great grade in the class. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:2365 - Dr. Wingerd is an amazing professor. He knows the subject pretty well and he is very enthusiastic about his teaching. His lectures really engage you to the subject. If you hate history, I don't think you should consider the idea to take a class with him. His class is not "easy" if you like to use that word, his class requires a good amount of reading. If you really really want to learn the subject because it's something you like, take him. Otherwise, it will cause you to type down all your frustrations on this website at the end of the semester. Cheers! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1307 - I considered dropping the course after the first week, but was persuaded not to. Dr. Wingerd is a wonderful man and a good teacher, however, I feel as if I were in an honors course. Yes, I knew that on the syllabus, it said there would be a large workload.. but I had no idea how big it would be. In my opinion, if you don't mind large amounts of reading from 3 textbooks, then take the class. There are a fair amount of pop quizzes, there are 3 papers (granted they are 1 page single space, but the topics are pretty challenging and he will dock you for ANY type of fluff), and his tests are a tad on the outrageous side. There are 10 direct questions, 15 terms out of 5 chapters worth of terms (250 terms), a map to fill in, and 4 one-page essays. I wasn't prepared for the class and did not do well. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1307 - where to begin... first of all, his exams are absolutely impossible. he's asking for 1-3 word answers on 10 direct questions. what the eff is a direct question? like you would think that they're super easy to answer but he asks the most detailed 'direct' questions. then out of like 5-6 chapters he gives you 15 terms/names and you have to write out three unique facts for at least 10 of them. mind you, if you can only come up with like 2 facts he counts the whole thing wrong, so he obviously doesn't believe in partial credit. as if that weren't bad enough, he gives you four essay prompts to prepare ahead of time with at least three names and a date for each essay and picks three essay prompts the day of the exam. on the bright side, he gives you an easy 10% with a map you label. Wingerd is a pretty cool dude, but I'm so over his cynicism. He assigns extensive readings every night and makes you read stupid documents that don't make any sense to anyone. On occasion he gives essay quizzes over the readings and grades pretty hard. If you're really interested in the subject and love reading, by all means, take this guy. if not, I really don't recommend this. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1307 - Dr. Wingerd was very nice. He was very accessible after class, sometimes more than what his office hours stated. His expectations are clear on his syllabus. His quizzes were easy IF you did your reading. Although they were pop, so they weren't cosistent. His tests were doable. YOu had to study a lot of potential vocab words, but you only wrte definitions for ten of then. He gives you 4 essays ahead of time to write on, and he chooses 3 of them for you to write on the test the day of. And then you also had a map that you filled out ahead of time, memorize and then refill out on the test. His tests were clear on what to study for obviously, but were quite time consuming to study for. His powerpoints were snoozers. Although it was fun listening to him talk He is obvioulsy very passionate about history. The way he formats them are confsing at times. He does a lot of jumping around. Instead of teaching through the years, he takes different parts of the world and teaches them seperately. Over all, I definitley recommend him if you are willing to work. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:WH2 - The instructor was effective because he taught somewhat chronologically, graded fairly, and great use of the books students had purchased. To be more effective, the instructor could be more exciting. Sitting through power points is to dull for a an hour and 15 minute class. Anything would be better than power points…… If he wants to do power points as the main method to teach the class he should really put them on BB so people would pay attention to him instead of simply coping power points. Also, talking about the paper after it is written does not help anybody-what about before? - Grade In Class:B
Comments:HIS 1307 - Dr. Wingerd's class is pretty average. He really tries to keep students engaged with class discussions about the topics. He also encourages questions. Prior to taking his class, I had read that he was condescending, however I have not experienced this in class. He keeps my attention during class, which is hard to do in a history class. There is reading every night, even over breaks, but it's not nearly as much as it could be. He loves class discussions about the readings, because he really wants to hear what we thought and how we interpreted the material. The tests are time consuming, 3 essays, 15 vocab, and 10 short answer (1-2 words), but he gives you the essay prompts before hand, and the rest should be pretty simple if you paid attention and took thorough notes in class. The only con to his class is that he doesn't post his power points on Blackboard, which makes a computer absolutely necessary for taking notes. Overall, I really like him and his class. You should take him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2366 - Dr. Wingerd is an excellent professor. If you participate in the class discussions, you will do well. He is very passionate about the material, and this dude is a genius. He will harass the whole entire class until everyone gives their input, but this is done with good intent. He has pop quizzes that I probably averaged a 50 in but because I participated so much, he disregarded it and gave me a hundred. The workload is horrible, so much reading and the tests are very thorough but given that he also has an one page essay due before each test that count as a test grade (he usually gives A's on those), getting 70's on the tests still allowed me to score an A. At first, he really annoyed me because he wasn't really transparent about his grading and never utilized blackboard but in my experience, teachers like this always end up bumping your grade to your advantage at the end. The good thing though is that his test reviews are in the EXACT same format as the the actual test and it tells you exactly what is going to be on the test and what essay prompt to prepare for. I highly recommend him, but I feel like there are easier history classes out there. He teaches the introductory history class as well so I would take that before taking 2366. - Grade In Class:A
