Comments:1306 - Dr. Cook is a somewhat nice guy but his lectures are dreadfully boring and I learned nothing the whole semester. He goes off topic all the time and his voice is very monologued. All I did all semester was do other work during the lectures. The tests are 50 true or false tests. There are two essays but simple if you know how to write a decent essay. The final is two short essays which brought my grade up from a B+ to an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4325 - He is a wonderful professor and man. Very sweet and willing to help you throughout the semester. Very accommodating for emergencies and disabled students. Workload is very very easy. Readings are straight forward, exams are open note take home essays(unlimited time), and our final project is fun. He doesn\'t have office hours unless you email him. He is very willing to meet before, after class, and any time he is on campus. Answers emails pretty soon too. I would highly recommend him if you want a fun and easy 4000 class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Multiple - I have taken Dr.Cook for several classes and can genuinely say that I've enjoyed them all. He might be a little boring in class but majority of his classes are seminar style so just talk and interact. He has crazy, funny, and interesting stories. And overall just a kind man. I will say HE IS OLD however his willingness to teach to this day is great. I wish he retires someday so he can get some needed rest. But till them I plan on taking more classes with this out-of-pocket controversial man in the anthro department!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3340 - Dr. cook is the sweetest professor. He is really passionate about his work. Sometime the class can get boring but overall Dr. cook is great. The workload is not bad at all and his exams are all online. Great professor!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:ANT 1306 - Professor Cook is a really nice guy, and you can tell that he is passionate about the subject, but his class and the work is extremely boring. The class itself consisted of 4 four 50 question true or false exams, 2 essays, and the final which is 2 short answer essays. All exams and essays are take home which was nice. The exams based on the textbooks were pretty much common sense and didn't require that much work, but the other 2 exams based on novels were really specific and you will not do well on them if you don't read the books. The essays were pretty straight forward and were easy writes. He graded them fairly easily as well. All in all, this class was pretty easy; just really boring.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - God. Where do I start? Don't take him. If you value your GPA and sanity, do not take him. HORRIBLE. Cannot say it enough. Will never take again. His grading was unfair and biased towards certain students, and he only had two essays and five exams. The exams were all take home open-note open-book, so you may be like CHILL awesome, I can ace this class, but NO! Do NOT be fooled! The highs are low 80s high 70s??? That means there's a problem with his teaching, not the students and their way of studying. These exams are from like 10 years ago, he needs to update them so they are relevant to what he is currently teaching that semester in class. He literally tests on stuff he taught in class five years ago that he's subsequently cut from the curriculum. Plus, he's been teaching longer than my parents have even been alive. For real. And he goes off on these horribly long tangents about his childhood that are surprisingly racist and prejudiced despite this being a cultural anthropology class? He obviously had a favorite student, who would get away with saying incredibly offensive things towards the vast majority of the class with no punishment. I think Cook actually ruined cultural anthropology for me. So yeah, don't take him. Please, Dr. Cook, retire. You're a kind enough old man, but it's time. Retire.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:4325 - I took this class thinking I was going to learn about the subject and its relatedness to the real world. However, I, and most of my class to be honest, just ended up more confused. We only talked about one topic all year long, yet also learned nothing about it at the same time. It was supposed to be a seminar-style lecture, meaning everyone would speak, yet he would just talk the entire time. And again, I would have no idea what he would even be rambling on about. This class was easy and the weekly readings were very interesting, we just had no way to apply them. There were exams, but they were easy and he pretty much gave you the questions that would be on them at the beginning of the year. You also had to give a short lecture on a selected reading of your choice and a final presentation with a group, which pretty much if you tried, you would get a decent grade. Ultimately an easy class, just be prepared to be bored and possibly confused the whole time. Sweet man, I just don't think he's teaching the right class from his knowledge. (He would admit to not knowing Medical ANT, and just cultural all through the year)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4325 - Dr. Cook is such a sweet man, but he has zero clue what is going on. It was really hard to stay awake in this class, and we talked about the same topic all semester. And when I say we talked, I mean HE talked. Not much conversation was said, and when someone did reply to him, he just made it more confusing. There are weekly readings, and essay exams over every unit. It's not horrible at all. You have to do a student presentation on one of the readings, which I enjoyed! At the end of the semester, you did a group project, and everyone did a great job I honestly learned more from them teaching me than from him. Again, such a sweet guy and does not mean harm or anything, just a lot of sitting through 3 hours a week.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ANT 1306 - This class is a hard fought battle. There is no homework, only exams and essays, though you never know what you're going to get on the exams. They are 50 question true or false, but I swear if Dr. Cook took the exam he wouldn't get an A because the questions are so confusing and backwards. I took notes during every class and bought all the books but honestly you may just be better off winging it. I don't feel like I learned anything. All in all I didn't do too much work, just stressed about my grade a lot.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2024-05-05

Comments:ANT 1306 - Dr. Cook is a sweet professor with great stories of his cultural anthropology experience. However, he gets off topic easily and nothing he talks about will be on the test. His test is composed of 50 true and false questions and we have about 3 essays. Never any homework and a easy workload. Just show up to class, listen, and read and you will pass no doubt. I would take him again in a heartbeat, due to the barley any work load and how refreshing it was to have a laid back professor  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1306 - This guy is great, way to many people hate on him. If you don't learn anything in this class I feel like that is on you. I recommend this man as your teacher.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2024-04-02

Comments:4325 - Dr. Cook is just the sweetest guy. I've taken two classes with him, the beginner 1000 course wasn't my favorite since the topics discussed were so broad. But the upper level course was great! It was pretty discussion based and he kept them all really interesting. The workload wasn't bad at all. There were a few presentations throughout the semester and they weren't bad at all (trust me talking in front of a crowd is like my biggest fear and they were fine). He wasn't a tough grader at all. I would absolutely take a class with him again, he has been one of my favorite professors!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:ANT1306 - Boring class with interesting readings. I think he should consider retiring. Don't get me wrong, he is a really nice person but his teaching style is out of date.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:ANT 1306 - Dr.Cook is a very sweet man. As others have said, he is not the most engaging lecturer. I loved the material enough to sit through class and participate, but many did not. (If you are unlike me, I advise drinking a cup of coffee beforehand so you can stay engaged). If you do the reading, there really is no need to attend class as he just goes over the basic concepts. (But you really should attend class). I really like that his class was straight forward and predictable. You always know what you are going to get. Because of this, he also makes it very clear what you will be tested on which makes up for the rather monotonous lectures. As long as you do the work, there is literally no reason you should not do well. He makes it incredibly easy to get a good grade (and part of that is just showing up). It also helps to stay after and ask him a few questions so he puts a face to the name. The structure of the course was easy and Dr. Cook always had amazing anthropology stories to tell. Additionally, Dr. Cook listened to our opinions and often asked critical questions for furthering one's understanding of the material. Overall, I enjoyed the material and the straight-forwardness of his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1306 - Dr. Cook is a very sweet man who is extremely passionate about anthropology. He\'s not the most engaging lecturer, however, and he\'s not too organized in my opinion, which makes it hard to pay attention in class. He does have office hours but a lot of the times, he\'s not actually there. I found the essays and exams pretty straightforward and he was available through email for help. You would only need to memorize key terms that he tells you beforehand for the exams and he grades essays pretty fairly. I wouldn\'t fervently recommend taking his class, but if you are in his class, it\'s definitely not too bad at all. If you can, don\'t take his early morning class. I had him first thing T/TH and it was hard to pay attention because he has a very quiet voice. He did bring a harmonica to class once (he is great at the harmonica) to try to keep our attention.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-09-21

Comments:ANT 1306 - I really wanted to like him... but his teaching ability is not great at all. He has some awesome stories from his life as an anthropologist, if you're able to stay awake. The content itself wasn't particularly difficult to understand, but the tests are literally impossible to study for. He writes all the questions himself and are all true/false. He gives a very broad study guide. If you get stuck with him, just know you have to try extra hard to study and stay awake in his class.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2020-06-03

Comments:ant 1306 - I took this class because I need it for my major, but I would not recommend it. He was not a very good teacher at all. The lectures were basically him just ranting about random stuff that had nothing to do with what we were learning and was frankly confusing to follow. His tests are all true/false which is very difficult to study for, and he does not review the answers after graded. It is very hard to recieve an A on any of the essays - he mainly gives out B's even if you meet all of the requirements.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2020-04-15

Comments:ANT2305 - Dr Cook is a really nice and enthusiastic guy but he is SO unorganized and class is chaotic because you never really know what's going on or what your grade is. Class is mostly discussion based, but he gets off topic extremely easily. Overall, nice guy but wouldn't recommend him as a prof  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-05-01

Comments:FAS 1305 N8 - Dr. Cook is adorable. Although he is very quiet and relatively monotonous, he is extremely passionate about his field of study and that reflects well in the lectures. The more questions people ask, the more interesting the lectures get. He has completely illegible handwriting, so if you get a paper back with writing on it, you pretty much have no choice but to go in and see him during his office hours to decipher the feedback he provided you with. Stay up to date on your readings, pay attention in class and take good notes. He's always eager to discuss, so take advantage of that.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-10

Comments:2305 - I loved Dr. Cook. His coursework was interesting, his lectures were fascinating, and he was genuinely funny. He really enjoys teaching, and was super helpful to me when I was concerned about my major and future. He loves students, and his tests are easy peasy so long as you've been taking notes in class and doing the work. Seriously, I love him.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-03-26

Comments:1305 - Tons of dull reading, but he knows what he is talking about. He gives test reviews and grades fairly. Tests are essay responses and are always on topics from the study guide.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-11-20

Comments:4680 - Dr. Cook is one of the most caring and nice professors I've met at Baylor. He honestly cares about his student's comfort and what they learn. Sometimes he can go off on tangents in lectures but the information we got was exactly what was on the test. You could talk to him about any concern you have or just about anything and he would be respectful and kind to you.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. This man can NOT teach.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2011-08-26

Comments:1305 - This class was so easy, he takes attendance randomly and everything on the test is out of what you learn in class. (Mostly true false a few multiple choice and a couple short answers) I did not open either of the books I got. Plus he has a cool mustache.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-04-12

Comments:anthropology - Dr. Cook has a really nice mustache and is a solid guy.   - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2010-12-01

Comments:ANT 1305 - I really liked Dr. Cook's teaching style. It's an all test class, with no homework or projects. Just come to class and know the material. He's also very nice and helpful.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-12-01

Comments:1305 - This class is terrible. Dr.Cook is incredibly intelligent, and often rambles off into very interesting subjects...but the content of this course is based off very very very specefic details. I spent a lot more time than i wanted learning the different names of the fossil findings and things in terms of m.y.a (millon years ago)..but at the end of the day Dr.Cook was just concerned as to surveying the class as if they felt as alienated from the 21rst century as he did, and converting students into anthropology majors...if you're looking for an easy A, take someone else. If anthropology is your major, and you care...take Cook.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-12-15

Comments:1305 - do not take him, gave me a zero on an extra credit paper- said my stance on evolution wasn't right- RETOOK WITH Macaulay!   - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2009-05-08

Comments:ANT 1305 - Dr. Cook is a really fun/nice guy, but he's a little scatter-brained. His lectures can be really interesting, but the test comes mostly from the book. He offers EC, but the only grades are from the exams. Read the book and you'll do well.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2009-03-23

Comments:field school - Dr. Cook is fun, if not the most interesting of profs in the classroom. He is a great guy once you actually get to know him. I suggest Cook for any ANT/ARC majors looking for an interesting and very on-topic class. Also, Cook's moustache will one day rule the world.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-11

Comments:intro to anthropology - This class was AWFUL. I am a straight a student and i made a c in this class. there was so much info and you had to know very specific details for the tests. maybe this was just my waterloo but seriously i was never even able to make a b on a test. and the lectures bored me to tears. they were really important though, since a lot of stuff came from the lecture that wasn't in the book. i would really just stay away from this class if you can take another one to fulfill that social science credit or whatever it is.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2008-12-10

Comments:intro to anthro - his lectures are extremely boring but it is very important to stay awake the entire time because good note taking is pretty essential on the test. he gives a unit outline and claims that only the questions on the outline will be on the test but when i took the tests he always added in a few that weren't on the outline. tests consist of 30 T/F, 10 multiple choice, 5 matching, and 2 short essays that count 20 pts each. the essays are extremely easy, you basically define 2 words off of a list that the unit outline gives. multiple choice is tough tho! i wouldn;t really reccommend him. it wasn't dreadful tho  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2007-12-26

Comments:1305 - this guy is a joke, you can't understand what he is saying, and his hand writing is atrocious too. he's a nice guy, but he's full of crap and the class is completely irrelevant unless you're going into the field. definetely dont take this guy, your gpa will take a big hit.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2005-12-20

Comments:1305 - Wanted to poke my eyes out during his lectures because they were so boring. Tests are true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. The short answer consist of definitions that he gives on the study guides-easy. Tests are intimidating at first but you'll get used to it after awhile. Attend the study sessions because he might give hints as to what is on the test. Other than that it's a boring class, he's a pretty good teacher. Not really a great lecturer but what can you do. I would take him if there wasn't anyone else. I guess.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2005-12-17

Comments:1305 - There are only 4 grades for the entire year, plus one really long and in depth extra credit assignment. The class is mostly about evolution and monkeys. He randomly takes attendance and if a lot of people are gone on a certain day he will make that day extra credit on an exam. Going to the review sessions and knowing the outline will pretty much gaurantee a good grade in the class. 60% of the test is multiple choice, and 40% of the test is short essay, which will come straight from the outline. He tries to be funny, but usually comes off as derranged. I didnt study till a day or 2 before the tests and usually pulled off a good grade. He does not curve no matter how bad the class average is. I would take him again, even though the class is really boring.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-11-17

Comments:1305 - I had a hard time staying awake in his class and usually ended up daydreaming when I was awake. His exams are T/F, multiple choice, and short essay. You have to read the chapters in the books in order to do well on the exams because he doesn't go over all of the material in class. Memorize the vocabulary terms because they are short essay questions. I never went to the review sessions and I attempted to read the book the night before the exams, which is probably why I got a B.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-04-16

Comments:1306 - Ah, yosemite sam the fossil man was probably the worst and most boring professor I've had. The first half of the semester evolves around ... well evolution, and nobody could make it any more boring than this guy and how he just pulls a fossil out and talks about it for 30 minutes. Tests were ok; about 50% of the test was T/F which sucks if thats not your piece of cake. Review sessions were helpful, and you could tell by his excitement level during the response what is and isn't on test. I wouldn't recommend him.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2004-12-16

Comments:1305 - Yes, his class is a tad bit boring, but he's a good teacher. A lot of the test material comes from the text book, but it's ok, it gives more depth to what he's teaching. Memorize the vocab words he gives- it helps a lot. His tests aren't hard as long as you study. And you don't have to study a ton for his test, unlike some classes.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-11-02

Comments:1305 - Terrible Professor in the fact that he goes off on tangents but teaches well. The class is hard because the reading is intense and half of the tested material is from the reading that he does not go over in class. Interesting material though.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-06-17

Comments:1305 - The class is a tad boring, but he teaches it well. He doesn't take attendance often, and doesn't penalize if you miss. Instead, he gives extra credit to people who are there when he takes it. Tests are relatively hard. No quizzes though, so make sure you study for them.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2004-05-04

Comments:1305 - Read the chapters and pay attention in class...he curves on his tests...the class average was curved to a C...he also gave extra credit (do it). I don't personally like anthropology, but if you have to take it like I did, he's good to take.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-03-09

Comments:intro anthro - trying to stay awake during his class is a real challenge but his test are pretty easy. the extra credit is not that helpful but as long as u study the study guide and the syllabus u should get an A. print off the online outlines to the books and u will do great.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-01-14

Comments:1305 - he is an extremely boring professor. he occassionally makes jokes about random things, and all it does is wake you up. read the chapters, follow the outline, and you'll do okay if you're really into anthropology.   - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2003-11-21

Comments:I wouldn't recommend him, he's so boring. The subject is interesting, but his lectures are so long and boring. Follow the study guide for the tests, and go to the review sessions.

Comments:He didn't spend alot of time in class going over the actual material because he always seemed to be going off on tangents....BUT....they were always really funny and/or interesting....you have to read though....i would take his class again

Comments:His lectures spend more time off topic than they do on topic, but the tests are easy and the material is easy and interesting making this class an overall easy class.

Comments:He was one of the worst teachers I've ever had in my life. He can't teach and just goes off on random tangents about nothing and then expects you to just learn everything from the book. Don't take him if you expect to learn anything.

Comments:I thought he was a great teacher. He helped uplift boring lectures with goofy stories about random topics. If you follow the study guide you should do well. Tests aren't hard at all and the essay questions are really easy.

Comments:Define & answer the study guide and you will do fine. Lectures straight out of the readings with alot of supplimentary info to help you understand. He is readily accessable for questions about the class and anything else about anthropology in general. His wild stories make the class one of the few that you actually want to go to everyday.

Comments:He is a very boring professor. He sometimes gets off on tangents, which is the only way I made it through the class without loosing my mind. Find the answers to the study guides he gives and you will be good to go, if you don’t go crazy during the lectures. The extra credit assignment (1305) is no help because he gives you a false sense of hope that you will make a good grade on it.
