Comments:1301 - I loved Dr. Shuford! The way he grades 1301 is so amazing; he drops 3 quizzes and a test, which is so generous. I genuinely liked him, even though he was combating the 8 am zombie class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1301 - I would give zero stars if I could. I had a serious family emergency during the semester, and he showed no empathy whatsoever—completely emotionless and unwilling to help. He made an already stressful situation even worse. His teaching style is unclear and his notes are in an awful format, and when he was absent and had a substitute, I actually learned more in that one class than the rest of the semester combined. The class average on our tests was around a 50, which should be a major red flag. This course will not reflect your ability or effort as a student, it will only reflect his lack of effective teaching. If you care about your GPA, your mental health, or just basic human decency, avoid this professor at all costs.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1301 - Overall Dr. Shuford is not a terrible professor but he is a little awkward so I did not attend office hours. I would highly recommend going to SI for this class. He works off of slides that have a good amount of information, HOWEVER he does not explain the material very well. There is a quiz about every week and they aren't too bad and give a good idea of what the exams look like. There are 4 exams and the final is compressive, everything is multiple choice which does mean there is no partial credit. At most he will curve 2 points. There is tophat and aktiv for every chapter and I recommend taking time on it to get practice in since he doesn't give the best explanations and expects you to understand everything right away.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - To start, I did not go to office hours but they were available. My reasoning was that because of how awkward lectures were I could not see myself doing a one on one. GO TO SI PLEASE!! I believe that if you have some prior knowledge you'll do fine. His workload was unnecessary. The top hat questions were not graded on correctness and you would get like 40 to almost 60 as the semester progresses with close to an average of 30 on Aktiv. I found myself teaching myself pretty much all semester and it was not my favorite class. Hearing from others, there are much better professors out there for chem 1 and I would take that advice. If you end up taking him, use the slides because apparently that matches his quizzes and tests the best. An upside though is that he drops three quizzes and one exam but that is only helpful if you do well in the beginning to use them later. The wording for every platform is different so just stick to slides. For the final it was not too bad. I recommend using past quizzes and exams to study as that helped me best. Looking back this class in terms of content was not bad but a professor can make it feel like a difficult class and that was my experience. I believe with a different professor I could have gotten an A or at least an A-  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - As someone who did well in the class, I will say there are a lot of better professors out there. If you learn best from power point slides, he's your guy; he only tests from his slides. He does a quiz for every chapter except for the last one, and his homework is a lot of Aktiv and Top Hat. It's doable, but I will say it is much more than what other professors assign. He lets you take home every quiz and exam, and I will say there are a few of those questions on the final. To do well in his class, study his slides, do the in-class problems, and go to SI. As a person, I agree with the other users. Shuford is kinda detached.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Ultimately, a pretty straightforward class. Exam averages are usually around 65 and he curves it only a couple questions so that the average is a 70. Straightforward material, and he lets you take the quizzes home to study which was very helpful. Office hours were a little awkward, and SI was ultimately much more helpful. Final was just like all the other exams, only multiple choice questions for everything so you could not get partial credit. Not the most engaging or exciting professor, but clearly a good guy who does care. Ultimately, you have to be prepared to put in the time and effort to study for a good grade in this class.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - Professor Shuford is a great professor. I did not start the class out very strong but still ended up with an A in the course. He has 2 drop quizzes and a drop test which really helps. He is always willing to work with his students and provides extra help when needed. He grades fairly so the amount of effort you put into the class is the grade you'll get out of it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem I - Shuford is a great teacher and a very kind man. I enjoyed taking his class because it is very clear he cares about the success of the student. If you do the mastering and do the problems he assigns, getting an A is no problem! The test problems were very similar to the problems he assigned for homework. Also he gives a lot less mastering HW compared to some other chem teachers  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Take Dr. Shuford! He was an excellent professor. He was very straightforward in his class expectations and does not try to trick his students. His lectures did sometimes get dry, but he doesn't mess around. SI helps to solidify information. Don't blow off the quizzes, you have to make a 93 or higher to make an A! Do his recommended problems and spend time on concepts in addition to problems, and you'll be fine.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Took this class after dropping Chem 1301 with Klausmeyer the previous semester. I was pretty nervous going in. But Shuford really teaches gen chem in layman terms and was very helpful. He was kind of a boring lecturer but he made sure we understood what was going on in class. His tests were pretty easy. You can get an A if you put forth the effort.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - I had an 89.459 in the class and he wouldn't round me up to an A...nice guy, kinda detached. Usually teaches physical chemistry so he often forgot that he was teaching gen chem.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Shuford is a heavy PowerPoint teacher. It's nice because the class is organized and he sends you PDFs of the PowerPoint handouts to take notes on, but class can be terribly boring at times. He drops one test and three quizzes, and gives fairly heavy curves if the test goes badly. Tests look a lot like quizzes, and quizzes aren't bad if you do the Mastering Chem and work the problems in class. Don't need to read the book, but the practice problems he assigns can be helpful. Generally very receptive to student input and a nice guy.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - I feel like Dr. Shuford is a pretty good teacher. In the very least, he is much better than any of the biology teachers I took. If you read the book (I didn't), do the practice homework (I didn't either), and go over the questions you got wrong on quizzes and exams (I also didn't), then you should do awesome in his class. It is very easy to know what to expect in his class and there are opportunities to bring up your grade in the class (in fact I had a 60 average before the final exam and due to the final replacing a low exam grade ended up with a better grade). I did ask him once what my grade was in his class and he told me it was impossible for him to figure out at that point in time and that I could do it myself, but I guess I bugged him enough for him to figure it out for me. It is hard to tell if he is even interested in teaching the class at times because it is introductory chemistry and the class is the most awkward one I have ever been (there's like 100 students and pretty much no one ever answers his questions so that makes the worst awkward silences). In the end, though, I think that he is a very good teacher for you to take for chemistry (despite how annoyed you will be at the long textbook chapters).  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Shuford doesn't typically teach 1301, he's usually teaching p-chem, but I'm glad that he taught it this semester and I could take his class. I don't have a strong background in chemistry at all, and ended up getting a D last semester with Dr. Bellert. Taking chemistry this semester, I felt totally competent. Dr. Shuford is a very easy 1301 professor. All tests are multiple choice and all you need to know are on slides posted on blackboard. I spent very little time studying for this class and got grades I was happy with. I'm kicking myself for not putting forth more effort to make an A because it is absolutely do-able even for a student who struggles with chemistry.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 4321 (P Chem 1) - I really enjoyed Dr. Shuford's class. I believe this was his first class he taught at Baylor, so he might change things up the next time he teaches it. He is pretty nice and funny. He was always willing to further explain something if there were questions. He wanted to help his students as much as possible. He taught off of powerpoints that were posted on Blackboard. It was easy to lose focus if you just listened, so it would be good to take notes or do something to stay engaged in class. He doesn't have a strict attendance policy, but it will only be more difficult if you don't show up for class. He assigned homework problems at the beginning of each chapter. Homework isn't for a grade, but his quizzes were basically one or two homework questions straight from the book. His tests were very fair. You're allowed one notecard to write whatever you wanted (formulas, practice problems, notes, etc). Tests were almost all free response, with some random true/false questions. There wasn't anything too unexpected, some problems were straight from homework. He does a good job with partial credit. The final exam replaced your lowest test grade and counted for the final grade, if it would help you. That was the only way I was able to pull off an A in the class. The final was not bad at all, mostly questions from previous tests. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Shuford!  - Grade In Class:A
