Comments:1304 - I really liked Smith's classes, and the fact he was not worried about being politically correct. I could see how he would not be popular with some, but he really wanted to get you thinking in discussions and would give good feedback on papers when he got them back to you.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - this is my second semester taking English with this professor, and in my opinion, he doesn't deserve a 45. first of all, you don't *need* the textbooks for this class, but he does *make* you read them. I never read them, and I got an A in the class since the readings aren't really helpful and he explains everything in class. I will say, this course did confuse me because he would purposefully give us wrong examples and have us talk about them and try to fix them. He grades pretty generously as long as you follow his rubric step by step pretty much. Going to his office hours helped me alot, and he does offer extra credit. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! As long as you do the work on time, and you follow the rubric, it's pretty much a guaranteed A. ALSO! Show up to class. He docks a lot of points from your attendance grade if you miss class. His classes are very discussion based, and he's always open to discuss questions or problems. Overall, he's a pretty good english teacher who has a few hiccups.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302 - Dr. Smith is very charismatic and east to get along with. His class is easy going. You get what you you put in. Prof. Smith's class is labor intensive(he even says it himself). Homework is assigned after every class on canvas. Like any other class, just stay on top of those assignments and you will be in pretty good shape. The essays are non negotiable. Just do them without complaint. He assigns an essay per unit(there are four units I believe). Prior to the essay deadlines he will do in class workshops on the essay which truly relieve the stress of writing the essay. He wasn't my favorite teacher but this class was fairly enjoyable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1302/1304 - Dr. Smith is a good professor! You definitely can learn things in his lectures. I am an international students and did not write essays in English before I came to Baylor. He helped me a lot in his office hour. One thing is his homework can be confusing sometimes, but you can ask him. I admit that he is a strict professor and really expects you to improve your English abilities through his lectures. So if you want to get an A in his class, you need to put many efforts. Two things you have to do: go to his office hour to talk with him about the essay and go to the writing center. It is true you can have a hard time after talking with him about your essay, but when you are done with your essays and get your grades back, you can feel happy about it, about your efforts.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1304 - DO NOT TAKE!! I only took his class because it fit with my schedule, and now I regret it. Dr. Smith's directions are not detailed at all and at times I found myself trying to guess what he was wanting me to do. I even went to the writing center and they were confused as well. He also gave us pop quizzes on the textbook readings one or two times, one of those times was the Monday after spring break. A few days ago I had a conference with him on my final essay, where I told him about my topic. I left that meeting feeling very uncomfortable and embarrassed due to the fact that he made me feel like I didn't know what I was doing. Again, please avoid. DO NOT TAKE!!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - Upon meeting Mr. Smith I thought he was a freshman who was pretending to be our teacher. This guy was honestly a joke of a professor. I am honestly convinced Mr. Smith thought he was teaching an upper-level Grad School English class when he was teaching freshman. I went to his office hours countless times and it did absolutely nothing to help my grade. He has a weird obsession with Taylor Swift and made us uncomfortably watch her music video one day.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:ENG 1304 - Mr. Smith is horribly demeaning towards his students. I continually feel belittled and disrespected in his class. On one occasion after asking a genuine, serious question about his expectations for the structure of an essay outline, he responded "I think the answer is pretty straight forward" and then walked away without providing any instruction whatsoever. I have seen this same sort of response in him towards other girls' questions on numerous occasions. Since, I have never asked a question in class because I would rather receive a zero on an assignment than be subject to his hostile attitude. He also included a unit called "Sexual Scripts" which lasted a fourth of the semester. In this unit, he discussed articles that spoke of men's sex drives and the cultural expectations of how overtly sexual a woman is expected to present herself. He made many parallels and allusions to his personal dating life as well. He claimed in class that although it may be a slightly awkward unit, every 1304 class had to do a unit on sexual scripts. Because I felt so uncomfortable with his in class rhetoric, I asked about fifteen to twenty friends if their professor was doing a sexual scripts unit. Every single person without fail assured me that this was not taking place and had not taken place in their English 1304 classes. This has all taken place in a classroom that is composed of eleven girls and only four boys. I have asked other girls in my class if they were comfortable with the class content during this unit and they expressed feeling of complete discomfort. Even a boy that I talked to said he was highly uncomfortable and taken back by Mr. Smith's words especially in a classroom of primarily girls. I had to meet with him in his office to make up an assignment I had received a zero on and I was absolutely terrified. I called my parents beforehand to express my fear and they were horrified at the way this professor has conducted himself. The only reason I was able to stay composed and keep my fear at bay is because he works in a group office and other professors were present at the time. Mr. Smith is the most demeaning, belittling, and blatantly disrespectful teacher/professor I have ever attempted to learn from. He would go back and change my good homework grades to 0s and never responded to my many emails asking him why he did that.I won't even go on to talk about his very vague expectations and week explanations for assignments because those issues are minor in comparison to the horrendous behavior I have outlined above.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - DO NOT TAKE MR. SMITH! He likes to lead his students to believe that he cares about them but does NOT treat them accordingly. Every time I walked out of his class I felt embarrassed and degraded. He asks questions to the class but is never satisfied with the answers given and makes that known. He is never clear when giving instructions for the various essay assignments. When you ask questions about the assignments he looks at you like you are stupid then proceeds to answer the question with so much fluff that by the end of his explanation you are even more confused. At the beginning of the class he makes it clear that all you have to do is follow his instructions to make an A. Which may be true but his instructions were always SO confusing that it was an impossible task. I walked out of his classroom multiple times on the verge of frustrated tears. I put everything I had into trying to follow his instructions but was never able to succeed. DO NOT TAKE.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - Do not listen to these reviews. To be quite honest Dr.Smith was one of my favorite professors spring semester.. and I am not even an English Major. Yes , if you want an A you have to work for it, but a B sufficed for me. As long as you go to class, do your readings, do the 200 written word assignments and do parts of your essays as you are supposed to do, you will be fine. Granted I procrastinated the night before for everything and I turned out fine. If you do the work and show up to class, you will be a okay.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:23** - Although the workload was alot you can learn alot from Prof. Smith. I guess it looks like i\\\'m one of the few that actually enjoyed taking Prof. Smith. Probably because its just a bunch of girls on here complaining. But if you want a professor that is very helpful and has a clear ability to explain all concepts in English, take Smith you wont regret it if you just pay attention and participate in his class. If you go in with the mentality that it is a required course and its too much to handle, than you have the wrong attitude.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - These course evaluations are not fake, biased, and should be taken into serious consideration when selecting an english 1304 teacher. Mr. Smith is not a helpful professor. He is awkwardly uncomfortable to be around and his teaching style is downright awful. He will spend large portions of class explaining concepts that arent relevant to the work that you will do for the class. In addition, the workload is ridiculous. As someone who has a strong love for writing, this class has restricted my writing ability and his assignments in no way reflect the actual writing process.Do not take Mr. Smith. You WILL regret it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - This is ENG 1304 - a required class by Baylor for all students. However, he treats this class like it is a senior level, major specific course. The amount of work that he demands is absurd and his standards are too high. Compared to other students in other sections of this course, I did twice to three times the amount of work on a weekly basis with far more intensive assignments and in turn received a lower grade. I dreaded coming to this class because of this. He also seems to think lowly of his students, holding us in low regard. He is not afraid to tell students that they are wrong and sarcastically and sassily shoot them down for their "wrong" input. And this is input that he asks the class for. Mr. Smith asks questions and is never satisfied with any answer but his own. While this never happened to me, I saw it happen several times to my classmates over the course of the semester. Not only does this incredibly embarrassing and disheartening students, but it makes him less approachable, respected, and makes the students time in this difficult course even more of a challenge. His students are aware that he's up to get his doctorate and that he is brilliant and thinks highly of himself, but he doesn't need to make it a point to show his students this every time they step into the classroom. I think that if he showed the same respect to students that he demands, he will be far more effective in instruction and in relating to the students. Also, if he realized and recognized that this course shouldn't be as hard as he makes it that it will be a more enjoyable learning experience and that people would actually want to come to this class, because a majority don't. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS SECTION. THERE IS A REASON HE HAS THE LOWEST RATING ON HERE.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - I read the reviews before I took him and thought it would be fine. I was wrong. He is the worst teacher I have had at Baylor so far. The workload is intense for a required freshman entry level course. He will read each assignment and grade it based on the level he thinks is acceptable. For example I did an assignment and received a 0. I emailed him and asked "Why I got a 0" He responded and said "it wasn't very good". I feel that the way he grades and what he expects is not fair because he is not ever clear on what he wants. He is a Ph. D. student and because of that he thinks he is superior to everyone and knows everything about everything. He pretends to care about his students but I dont think that it is genuine at all. I consider myself a pretty good student and fair when it comes to the work load students should get and he just expects way to much. He thinks that his class is the only one that matters. I would highly highly recommend not taking him if you can help it!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - I read BUBook reviews on Mr. Smith before taking his class, and I just ignored them thinking "how hard could this freshmen-level english course be?" LISTEN TO THE RATINGS. DO NOT TAKE MR. SMITH. He gives an ungodly amount of work, doesn't hesitate to give 0% on assignments just because he doesn't like the way you did it even though he gave no explanation on how to complete the assignment. He is rude to his students and definitely has people in the class that he is especially rude just because he doesn't like them despite their ability to do well. His feedback is unhelpful and no matter what you do it is basically impossible to get an "A." I have one of the highest grades in the class, and it drives me crazy that it is a "B+." I've worked very hard in this course, but Mr. Smith will give unreasonably bad grades on assignments and not explain why. He will expect you to do assignments while basing your work off of examples on purdue owl, but then when you come to class with the work completely, he makes you redo the work his way instead of purdue owl's way. He is ridiculous with his workload for such an unimportant required course. For example, for one class he expected us to prepare a 5 page outline, read 10 pages, complete 2 worksheets, and be working on another essay. All assigned to one day and no notice given ahead of time so that we could begin the work early. Pay attention to these reviews and avoid Mr. Smith AT ALL COSTS.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1304 - He's a cool guy but not the best teacher. He is not very helpful when it comes to the homework and understanding how to do it. Gives homework just about every day and it's always confusing. Grades everything really hard and is picky on how he wants things done. You may think you're a good writer but he will make you question that. Definitely would recommend not taking him, even if you think you're good at english.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2301 - ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE DAVID SMITH FOR ENG 2301!!!!!!! I consider myself to be a pretty good English student and have never received anything other than an A in a Baylor English course. If English is at all of a struggle for you, absolutely avoid taking Mr. Smith at all costs. He unnecessarily makes things incredibly difficult. Along with the 2 hours of reading you will be required to do before each class, you have a response paper due at the end of every week; he will never agree with what you have to say on these papers which means you'll end up getting a bad grade and it will ruin your overall grade. He enjoys making his instructions incredibly unclear but still has very high expectations for the coursework. Just don't take the guy if you don't have to.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - Smith isn't a bad guy, but he's certainly not the best teacher. His lessons lacked clarity and he often gave unsatisfactory answers when students asked questions. Expect at least an hour of homework due for each class period. The assignments are sometimes difficult, especially if you aren't a good writer. I managed to get an A, but it took a lot of hard work. The class is doable, but you have to put the effort in.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1304 - Mr. Smith is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. DO NOT take him under any circumstances because you will definitely regret it. Too much work, horrible grading system, and nobody in the class has an A. Absolutely pathetic that he managed to get a job at Baylor. I wouldn't let him teach my kindergartner how to count because he would find a way to mess it up.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - Absolutely the worst teacher here at Baylor. Changes criteria throughout an essay. Harsh grader and gives a large amount of homework. Not very helpful. Not direct towards student, rather, makes himself sounds smarter and more intelligent.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-04-18

Comments:1304 - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. It is near impossible to make an A on an essay unless everything about it is perfect. He tells us what he expects for an essay but I feel like he changes the requirements when he actually grades it. He is such a harsh grader. I wouldn't ever want to take him again.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1304 - AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS. Honestly I typically love taking english classes and always do well in them but this was the most miserable class i have ever sat through. He doesn't know how to communicate with students very well at all which makes knowing what he wants out of you in a paper very difficult. His grading is subjective to an extent as he is more likely to be harsher on your paper if he disagrees with what your take is. He tends to be very disrespectful and condescending towards students. I had to correct him on MLA citations which is a bit concerning. in general he is very difficult to work with and more trouble than he is worth.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1304 - David Smith is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He puts too much emphasis on busy work that is ultimately useless to what we are actually supposed to be learning. He assigns reading from the grammar textbook, as well as the actual textbook, and often assigns long articles with complex language as well. He also tends to assign a writing assignment to go with it, which is almost always a 1 page minimum. He also gives pop quizzes on random reading from the textbook so skimming will not be beneficial to you AT ALL. If you ask him a question, he asks you a question in return instead of being straightforward and giving you an answer that will be essentially beneficial. Although he does center his class around media, he uses a lot of science fiction references and analysis and tries to make simple ideas sound more intense and important than they actually are. His essay prompts are very structured and he is VERY critical of not only students' writing, but also the topic that each student writes about. If it doesn't sound interesting to him, despite how interested you are in the topic, he tends to be even more analytical and criticizing. He is the WORST. He is rude and obnoxious and makes students feel inferior and even stupid. I have never had anything less than a 90 on a paper and the highest grade I received in his class was an 87. Smith isn't even a professor but even as a grad student he is one of the most difficult and most unhelpful teachers I have ever had. AVOID HIS CLASS AT ALL COST.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:ENG 1304 - If you make one mistake in college it would be to take Smith for english. English has always been one of my best subjects, but not according to Smith. There is a ton of work due for every class period and that includes not only reading but also doing a writing assignment that goes with it. You will dread going to class every single day because he doesn't know how to teach and doesn't seem to care about his students at all. He will not help you edit you paper before its due, only briefly skim one paragraph of your choosing. It doesn't give you 100% on any of the homework. He takes off 3 points no matter what of either 10 or 15 points assignments and it really affects your grade after a while. This class is horrible. DONT TAKE SMITH NO MATTER WHAT.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-03-30

Comments:1301 - I wouldn't recommend him, but I might be biased because I am a pre-health student and I have always hated English. I felt that he wasn't very specific in what he wanted, and would mark off on my papers for something he said we didn't need to have. I didn't feel like this was a freshman course at all. He is a graduate student, not a professor. I also feel he tries too hard to sound "intellectual". He would start a sentence then pause for 15 seconds and come up with a big vocabulary word for smaller words like "good" for example. If it takes you that long to think about it.. maybe you shouldn't say it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2015-02-23

Comments:1302 - Mr. Smith is an extremely helpful professor. Although he can be a very hard grader at times. Cool guy overall. Also, he is a stickler for citing and plagiarism so if you know that you like to do that do not take him.  - Grade In Class:A
