Comments:1405 - I would not suggest taking Professor Allen if you have no knowledge of Geology. His lectures were very difficult to follow. A majority of his powerpoints are just pictures, and you have to write down what he says. If you have him you have to go to class!!! His tests are multiple choice but are on the most random things. Half the questions are things that he just mentioned in passing in class. If you want to do well, you have to write down everything he says and read the textbook!!! He is a nice man and really knows the subject but just hard to follow!  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1405 - This man is incredibly endearing however, he should not e teaching people on this level. His tests are THE HARDEST TO STUDY FOR. The syllabus doesn't add up with the dates and topics in which you are going through. He sends you powerpoints before the exam, maybe two days before, and they are just pictures! Please do not take this class. It is supposed to be an easy A and if you want that head over to Cronin  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1406 - This class is one of two classes at Baylor that I absolutely, positively REGRET taking and wish I could go back and change professors. First, Dr. Allen is clearly way too smart and in to what he's doing to be trying to teach non-majors who hardly want to take his class in the first place. His powerpoints are the worlds most unhelpful slides, consist 80% of pictures without explanations, and he rushes through them very fast. Instead of using more developed slides, he spends most of the class drawing very confusing, unexplained diagrams that almost ALWAYS have nothing to do with what's on the test and are hard to review after the fact because he doesn't write any words to go with. Your best bet is to write down literally EVERYTHING he says, even the random facts about Waco because that's what shows up on the test. The book is virtually useless, I wouldn't bother purchasing it all. Also, he doesn't teach you what you're going to do in lab so you struggle through that and the lab is extremely boring and way more intense than what is necessary. Finally, the tests are EXTREMELY hard and he has to apply a huge curve every time because no one really does well on their own. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Take Dr. Cronin, the kids in my lab who had him had a completely different experience.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - When asked about his syllabus he said "Oh i didn't know it said that i didn't read the damn thing" He just shows pictures with no meaning to the class at all. he doesn't take attendance so that's good. if you want to good on tests you have to remember everything he says in class because the tests do not come from the book. Good guy bad teacher. Goodluck  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Dr.Allen is not as bad, in my opinion, as these reviews would suggest. I went in (as a business major) hoping for "rocks for jocks" and it was certainly harder than I had planned. That said it is probably not wise to take this class if you don't like Geology. However, I feel that if you pay attention and READ you will do well in this class. Unfortunately, I didn't start reading until about halfway through the class, and it was too late to save my grade, but I don't think this class is exceptionally hard. Dr.Allen has a lot of experience in the field that makes this class more interesting. My main problem with this class was the Lab, Dr.Allen was not my lab instructor but the lab is poorly structured and honestly, the most boring thing I've ever done. This class is not unreasonably hard and Dr.Allen is a cool guy, but it's not an easy A. If you are a non-major I would recommend taking a different lab science.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1405 - Dr. Peter is a very nice old man, however he is not a good teacher. His powerpoints are weird and his diagrams on the whiteboard are confusing and unexplained. The only grades in the class are the exams, and his tests are so freaking weird. Half the material is random stuff and most words on the exams are misspelled. If you study the lecture notes for the tests you should be okay and for the other random nonsense he puts on the tests, well, just hope you are a good guesser. The lab is also very poorly designed. He also does not use Canvas or any other website or program, just email. You won't be able to see your class average or anything of the sort until the end of the year.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1405 - Dr. Allen is a great guy but not a great professor. I like that he is passionate about the material, but his teaching style is not engaging. He goes way too fast through information. I emailed him twice with no response, and went to his office during office hours and he was not there. He can be helpful if you track him down, but that is difficult to do. If you need a lab science credit, you're not a geology major, and you think this is "rocks for jocks", don't take Allen.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1405 - He tries to make jokes during class, and sometimes he is funny. He is a sweet man, but really an awful teacher. He had a lot of experience in the field, specifically with water, but that does not make him a good teacher. In fact, I don’t think Professor Allen should be teaching, he should stick with what he does best and that is fixing our water issues around Texas. He does NOT post his PowerPoints and he clicks through them VERY FAST, so it is hard to take notes. He does NOT use Canvas OR Blackboard. He emails his students his syllabus and nothing is available online. I wish he would’ve posted his PowerPoints online to Canvas. No one is able to see his or her cumulative grades until the end of the semester, and that really stinks. Students should be able to check up on their progress at any time during the semester. He draws diagrams on the board but he does this very fast and assumes that every student in the class can understand his diagrams. His tests are really out of this world. I will never know how he makes his tests. Half of the time they don't make any sense, which makes me think he made the test at 3 in the morning or something. He spells simple words like "the" wrong on the test, which gives the feeling that he doesn't invest his time into the course for his students, when his students are investing time for him. The tests are REALLY challenging and he will curve sometimes up to 20 points because his students do so badly. Half way through the semester at least 10 students dropped the course probably because they were failing. This class is a mess. My advice would be to take a different class.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1405 - Dr. Allen is really good professor. 4 tests and a final. He's super chill and makes jokes alot, some arent funny, but sometimes he gets lucky. At the end of each section, he emails out handwritten notes about that section, and ive gotten 90's on each test just studying his notes. He didnt take attendance, but going to the lectures helped me understand what the notes were talking about. He also includes a few questions on the exams about stuff we talked about alot in class, but werent on the study guide, so watch out. All in all, Dr. Allen is a really great professor and makes geology really fun and easy.   - Grade In Class:A
