*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:SPA2320 - Let me give you the rundown. I had no homework for this class for the entire semester. This is because it is 30% participation, and the rest is midterm and final, meaning it can be very biased. Professor Mazé is generally not a very friendly person, so it was really hard for me to keep participating even after he would make fun of me or someone else. Also, to save you some time, on your oral exams, make sure that you are making personal connections to the literature, not a summary of what happened. Some people really like him, and some really don’t, but you can definitely do it! All in all, yes I did get an A, but I would not take this class again if I had a choice. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Loved his class. He tells stories and relates to his students. As long as you show up and are somewhat interested in what is going on in class, you'll get an easy A. Take him for this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA2320 - Mr. Maze has a funny personality and a laid-back class structure, but it isn\'t optimal for learning. First of all, he often rambles on and gets off-topic. Class consists of either reading through a poem, or short story, or watching a movie every day. Your grade is dependent on your daily participation/attendance, the mid-term, and the final. Since there weren\'t any quizzes over the material, most of my classmates didn\'t look over the assignment before class and/or didn\'t talk at all in class. So your learning was dependent on your own accountability. If you\'re looking for an easy A, Maze is for you. All you really need to do is participate enough and lock in for the midterm and final, which are each over one piece of material from that unit. If you\'re looking for a challenge and to actually learn Spanish, take a different professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Easiest A of your spanish career. I tested into this class but was certainly not on a spa 2310 level, but what little i did know I used to answer his questions in class (participation is a big deal to him! he just wants to chitchat). be warned, he does make edgier jokes just dont take it personally, he wants to goof off, and frankly I'll take it over spanish grammar lessons. take notes during class, all hw and exams you can do online and w a classmate. easy A - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I do not understand how this man could possibly have any rating under 5 stars. He made my whole Baylor experience. I went to class for the first time not dreading it. He was so kind and helpful, his coursework was so easy. I know for a fact he does that on purpose. He is a very intelligent man who knows so many languages, and he was great at teaching Spanish. Because of his personality, his teaching stuck with me. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 lecture - He is an enganging fella. Great personality, but sub par teaching. He gets off topic often and easily and it really hinders from learning (which you will have to do by yourself outside of class). The class is mainly taught in English. Also he grades participation very harshly!! I talked a LOT and I did not get a 100. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Pretty easy class. Literally, if you know zero spanish, you can get a B+/A. Final, quizzes, exams, homework all online and open note. His class is extremely boring, he will spend the first 47 minutes of class talking about just random stuff, then for the last 3 minutes pull up the lesson and speed run it. If you need an A, take him. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:spanish 1301 - i LOVE professor maze!!! i was extremely nervous because i have never taken Spanish before but he was SO helpful, kind, and hilarious! I always looked forward to his class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA 2320 - I took Maze forSpanish 4 and the class is a little all over the place. You have readings to analyze pretty much every class, but I'd say he spends 80% of the time talking about other (sometimes spanish-related?) stuff. Pretty funny, relatively easy grader, but definitely has favorites. The topics we talked about were very interesting and relevant though. Not the best, but not the worst either. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I love Sr. Maze! He's a very friendly, very enjoyable prof. However, the workload for his class is heavy and almost all online. I haven't taken any Spanish before, and I don't feel like the course was paced well for beginners. He kinda assumes you already know the basics, which was hard. Will work with you and be flexible on a lot of things, but not a blow off class. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2310 - Dr. Maze is a very funny guy and an easy grader. He is very chill and flexible with class attendance. The only problem is that he really can't stop talking about his far-left political philosophies. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1301 - Louis Mazé is hands down one of my favorite professors I have had at Baylor. He is super flexible to a student's schedule and is very understanding. He made classes fun and was always cracking jokes and getting sidetracked. He loves to get the whole class involved, so be ready. If you keep up with the work, you will get an A and enjoy the class as well. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - THE GOAT! I loved Maze and would continue taking spanish with him if I needed to. Class was all over the place, but extremely fun. I definitely learned spanish, but the environment was so relaxed and Maze is so hilarious. Probably my favorite class this semester. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302, 2310 - the hidden gem, the shining star of baylor professors. does he make bad jokes and waste class time? absolutely. will you walk out after every class smiling? probably. take him and enjoy him and his democracy of a class. and his forearms. comment on them to get a good laugh. and do the homework! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401/1402 - Mazé is a good teacher, but if you've never taken Spanish before, I wouldn't recommend. He's very knowledgable and he shares a lot of info about how to actually use the language in a Spanish-speaking country so you don't make a complete fool of yourself. His lectures are not super useful for the online work, but if you use class time to practice your speaking and listening skills, you'll learn a lot more than you think. There is a lot of online homework, but if you space it out, you'll be fine. He grades on participation, but usually the lowest grade you can get is a 75 or 80 (and that's if you pretty much never talk in class, like me lol). If you do well on the hw and quizzes, it won't affect your grade too much. He's a pretty easy going guy, but he does expect a lot from his students especially when the oral exams come around - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - Maze is the shining light in the Spanish department. He's incredibly nice, he loves his students, loves his job, and is passionate about Spanish. My only issue with his class is that used online homework, which resulted in a few missed homework assignments for me, but that's a small price to pay for this teacher. If you get the chance, take Maze. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:SPA 1402 - If you're actually wanting to come out learning a lot of spanish, don't take Maze lol. However i loved profe Maze! I took him for two 1401 as well, and he doesn't make the class dull and tends to joke and get off topic alot, but it makes class more bearable considering i had it 5 days a week. The only "work" you have are the online assignments, quizzes, tests, FINAL written exams on VHL, which you can easily get through by getting the answers off google or something. If you want to come out with an A, just prepare well for your 8-10 min. oral exams you have with him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA 2320 - Professor Maze is by far my favorite professor at Baylor! This was my first foreign language class at Baylor since I tested into SPA 2320 and it was awesome! Class is never dull with Professor Maze he is so funny and makes class really interesting! Midterm & FInal both written and oral are so easy! Do not pay attention to any of these other reviews, Maze is THE BEST! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1401 - Mazé to this day is the worst teacher I’ve ever had. He never leaned out to help his students, constantly belittled them, and insulted their abilities in front of the whole class. Going into this class I had absolutely no knowledge of speaking Spanish since I did not take it in high school and I may require some extra help since almost everyone else in the class had. He practically told me to get over it and good luck in the class since taking it with him was “extremely hard.” He would call me stupid and continue to spend the entire class bragging about himself and how great he was when in fact he couldn’t do a simple thing like gain the respect of his students. Because of him I have hated the idea of taking another spanish class and hated the idea of learning the language. He is a horrible professor and if you aren’t his top student he’s gonna make you feel like your worthless. I ended up making a B in the class and went on to failling Spanish 2 at Baylor because I had no idea how to speak any Spanish from the Mazé’s class. Also, participation is a big deal in his class and I participated regularly and received a 75 for it. The kid in the back of the class who never spoke got a 90. He picks favorites and if you aren’t one your grade will reflect it. I learned absolutely nothing and still got a B. Really shows you something right there. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Spanish 1 - Professor Maze is a good guy who is passionate about spanish. However, there is a HUGE online work load in this class on the Vistas website. I spent probably 2 hours a day working on the online homework that is due at the end of the week. Good guy, but doesn't stay on topic well during class and I got very bored most days. Take him if you are okay with the amount of work outside of class that is more than other professors I've heard. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - To clarify I got an A mee noose because he cheated. He also mispronounced people's names at graduation--loss. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - (*Disclaimer: I actually got an A-, because an A is a 94 or above) While Professor Maze is a really nice guy, his class is not structured to be a 1401 level class. I had never taken Spanish before, and after hearing rumors about Baylor's Spanish program and it's intensity, I came in a bit worried. Unfortunately, almost every student (in my class of 16) had taken Spanish previously in high school. It may have been due to this fact, but Professor Maze did not teach during class. Instead, he used the class as a speaking class, where we were required to speak about whatever he decided to talk about for the entire class. If you can imagine, this was extremely confusing and intimidating for a student like myself who had never taken Spanish before in my life because I had no idea what was happening. It was extremely difficult to grasp the concepts we were attempting to learn, and he never taught vocabulary in class. He taught grammar minimally, but we were expected to come to class fully understanding it, or already know it. Also, he assigns about 100 online Vistas assignments per week, which are not helpful whatsoever (also averages to about 12 hours a week of busy work). However, I believe you are supposed to learn the material through these assignments, which does not work at all because to complete the assignment correctly, you already have to know how to do it...? Honestly, I learned almost nothing from this class, and it was very frustrating and stressful. Also, a large portion of your grade is from class participation, which he grades very harshly. I, being intimidated and not knowing Spanish at all, hardly participated, and my grade suffered because of it. I only pulled out an A (93 actually) in this class because I worked very hard for my midterm and final exams, which are both oral. The midterm is actually easy I will admit. If you can memorize phrases, you will be good. The rest of the tests for this class are all online, which is useful because you can work in groups, which I definitely took advantage of (he even encouraged this.) In sum, if you have already taken Spanish, take him for an easy A. Otherwise, do not take this class at all unless you want to be utterly confused and feel incompetent for most of the class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - Likewise. He is a weak little man. SUCIO! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2320 - This class, on the surface, does not seem to be too bad. Class participation is the largest chunk of your grade, with a midterm and final grade (consisting of oral and written components) making up the rest. However, this class ridded me of my 4.0. I am used to difficult classes in the Honors College, and have a good background in Spanish. I made sure to participate in class every chance that I got, but I was lucky to end the class with a low A for class participation. He does not grade the midterms or the final with a rubric, so the grade you receive seems arbitrary and very subjective. I met with him for discussing the midterm for a long time. His expectations laid out for the midterm did not match what he said to me during his office hours. Further, he went back on his word that he would give me another attempt. The daily work for class consists of readings that are 1 page to 3 pages long, with a class discussion over the readings the following day. I honestly thought he would come through at the end, but it was impossible for me to get an A in this class, despite the constant frustration of trying to do so. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - To start off and clarify I got an A- instead of an A. The workload in Dr. Maze's class is honestly too much. The homework is completely doable, the class is fine and easy to learn, but the amount of time it takes to do the homework (and not using quizlet) is unreal with a heavy course load outside. I will leave it at that. Just take someone else if you don't have the free time to give your life to it. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:SPA 2320 - I laughed so much in this class. Great Professor, great class. Not an easy work load. Stay ontop of the homework. He draws names from a hat each class and that person has togive a short presentation on the homework (yes, in spanish). Class participation is a huge part of your grade but he gives tons of extra credit opportunites. If you want and A -> show up prepared for each class, stay enegaged during his lecture/discussion time/do the extra credit opportunites. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - I took Maze over the summer in a French 1401 class. I'm actually a Spanish minor and he is famous in the Spanish department for speaking, I think 7 languages. Anyway, I had heard of him before and was really excited that I finally had him as a professor. My French class was structured the same way he structures his Spanish 1401 class. He doesn't make you extensively study vocabulary. Instead, he focuses on speaking the words in class, which is something none of my other Spanish professors really do. You learn the vocabulary simply because he uses the same words over and over in class every day and he makes you practice. He's a really weird guy, but the good kind of weird where everything he does is pretty funny. He's also an easy professor compared to other professors I've had and he'll make fun of other (unnamed) Spanish professors for giving their students so much work. He really wants you to learn, not just pass. I only had him for a short time over the summer, but now he says hi every time he sees me and he's been helping me tremendously with studying in France. He's so available and will meet me early in the morning before his office hours so that he can call my housing and speak to them in French (they don't speak English). I would definitely recommend him as a professor. Plus, he's the one who calls out your name at graduation! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - By the end of the semester, we were calling him Louis Amazing. If you study and keep up with the vocab and tenses and conjugations you'll be fine. Such a down to earth guy who genuinely respects his students. All of his teaching is very relatable to life and not all textbook - so actually super fun and interesting class. I'd almost say if you have anyone else, drop them and take Maze! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 & 1402 - Professor Maze is quite the character and he always makes class really interesting. He's a genuinely nice guy who cares alot about his students, although sometimes during class he can get a bit off topic. In regards to learning Spanish, I'm about average but I still got a good grade. The great thing is for our final/midterms he always gives us reviews that are basically the same as the test. Homework is all done online and you can google most of the answers to get a 100. Overall, easy class and a great teacher. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1402 - So this is probably the most fun you will have with a professor and the workload is pretty light as well. You have a midterm and a final both containing a written and oral part. The only other work you have besides that is some homework online. This contains about 20 assignments but they are rather easy and help you learn the material so it's fine, you also have over a week to do them. The only thing I didn't like about his class is how it was so easy to get distracted. His class is like a gameshow in the way he is just asking the students questions all day. Compared to my last professor, Janet Norden, I know I learned less in this class, but it has been really easy so far. I only am scared for my next semester in spanish - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1402 - If you were a professor how would you explain a word such as "pobrecito?" Professor Mazé is the type of professor that will kneel on the ground with his hands up in the air, looking at the sky, screaming, "Pooooooobrecitooooo" - and through his context you will be able to understand that it means "poor man." If you want a boring professor, this is not the professor for you. Professor Mazé always makes class interesting, always finds a way to get you involved, and always connects with his students. Do you ever feel like you want to know more about how a word origionated? Well, Profesor Mazé seems like he is an expert on that, explaining linguistics of words we have questions on until we know exactly how it came about in Spanish. So let's get to why you're probably looking this professor up. You might have noticed him on your new schedule or you might be choosing him as teacher next year. If he's open, pick him while you can. I can't fully talk anyone into taking this professor without warning them of one thing...We have a midterm written exam, final written, midterm oral, final oral, quizzes, homework, and participation grades. That's it. So you better not mess up the final or midterm:). However, don't let that stress you out! I have great advice for making an A in this class. Firstly, you will want to notice that you'll have homework, particularly "WebSam" online. If you are a freshman, this is online classwork, where you get two tries to get the correct answer. First, I like to spread the homework across a week. Let's say we have to do the entire CH.1 homework by Sunday. Perhaps its 4 sections each (This is just an example, I'm not actually sure if it does). Is it a coincidence that you have 5 work-days in a week? Nope! Get that sucker done by Friday and enjoy the weekend. Start on the practice exercises until you have it down and move on to the WebSam. Do 1.1 on monday, 1.2 on tuesday, 1.3 on wednsday, and 1.4 on thrusday. Usually, you will have "contextos". He's some great advice: Do that last. Go through the flashcards every day (it only takes 10 minutes, just don't be lazy). By the time Friday arrives, you know the vocab well enough to catch it in a listening comprehension exercise. Anyways, follow that schedule and you'll find yourself actually getting ahead in class. Participate well, and get excited. Follow this advice, and you won't have to worry about being called a "pobrecito(a)" once finals roll in! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1401 - Spanish - Professor Maze is so cool for a prof and cares so much about ma king sure that you are doing well in his class and adjusted to college life in general. He's like a cool uncle that doesn't B'S about stuff your parents just don't tell you strait up. Will totally sign up for him again. - Grade In Class:B+
