Comments:ENV 4393 - As someone who is not a religion major, this class kind of took me by surprise. Most of this class is focused on Christian theology/ideas surrounding the environment. Personally, I think calling this class "The Environment and Christianity" rather than "Environmental Ethics" might give a better sense of what this class actually is. This is a discussion-based class with readings every class that we then discuss during the class. The first half of the semester looks at more theological/religious texts (academic essays, writings from various religious figures, etc.) while the second half looks more at environmental texts. However, even with the environmental readings, there was always a focus on the Chrisitan perspective. Personally, I would have liked to learn about other relgious perspectives on environmental ethics, but we did not really do that. For me, I understood very little of what I read during the first half of the semester because it was very theologically based, and during the second half, what interested me in the readings was not really what we talked about in class. In terms of grades, there were two tests, a site visit and report, a tree project, and a final paper, each worth 20%. One thing that was difficult in this class was that none of the assignments had descriptions/detailed instructions. For example, the only direction we got for the tree project was to observe a tree over six weeks and turn something in at the end of it. While that gave us a lot of freedom, I would have liked to have some guidelines or a rubric so that I knew what the goal of the assignment was/how I was being evaluated. The tests were half multiple chioce/select all that apply and half short response/essay. They were fairly straightforward, so as long as you were in class and did the reading it was okay. There was a lot of reading in the second half of the course, sometimes over 100 pages per meeting, so be aware of that. While this class was not difficult, I personally did not love it as much as I was hoping to. If you're looking for a class similar to to this, Literature and the Environment (ENG 3360) is focused on environmental justice with a wide variety of perspectives you read from, and I would highly recommend that class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Wow. Easily one of the nicest professors I've had at Baylor. I previously got a B in REL 1310 with a different professor but Mr. Whelan does such a great job presenting necessary information for the exams. His exams themselves are pretty straightforward if you know the overall concepts. He brought cookies for our second exam and is genuinely curious about how we are doing both inside and outside of the classroom. He assigns weekly readings and a canvas quiz over what we read, and while sometimes the readings were a bit long, the quizzes could be done along with the reading so they were pretty easy as well. Put in some effort and you'll get that A. I had to wait in a 30 person waitlist just to get into this class with him and it was worth it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Dr. Whelan is a fantastic man and a fantastic teacher. He simplifies the material so anyone can succeed in his course. He does give quizzes before every class, BUT they are not difficult and go over the basics from the readings assigned for each class. The readings also aren't to time consuming or difficult to understand. Overall, Dr. Whelan is a quality dude and a good bet for Heritage.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 Christian Scriptures - No real complaints. Whelan teaches very straightforward and is easy to follow. He makes it clear what you need to know for the tests. The multiple choice tests are very doable as long as you have done the reading (which you have to do for his daily quizzes anyways). Very friendly to talk to if you ever need help or extra credit or whatever. Take him if you can.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Religion Scriptures - I loved Professor Whelan! He was actually so kind and nice, and knew everybody's name. I felt welcome and actually kind of cared about the class even though I did not care whatsoever about the subject. He even brought us cookies and brownies to each test! His family is also super cute. Basically I loved everything about this class and did not mind showing up and participating (Which is good, because he has a participation grade). He's a wonderful teacher and a great guy. All around probably the best class I've ever taken, and not hard to get an A. He has quizzes every class, basically just do the reading (or even just skim over it again if you went to Sunday school). Also, on tests, study his test guides carefully and write out an answer for each question. A lot of it will be on the test. Take Whelan if you can!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1310 - Best professor and by far the most straightforward class I have taken at Baylor! Dr. Whelan teaches the information so that you are engaged the entire class and actually interested in the scriptures. There is reading assigned for every class and almost always a quiz. They are straight from the readings so if you do the homework, you will easily make a good grade. The tests are super straightforward as well and easy to obtain a high score on! Overall, Dr. Whelan is a great professor who actually cares about the well-being of his students and is always willing to help when you need it! I would highly suggest taking him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Heritage with him was an absolute joy. I thought he was cheesy at first, but quickly realized that he was a brilliant man who is simply passionate about the things he teaches. He's also great with words and gives good powerpoint-assisted lectures every class. Lots of reading, but it's all optional in some ways. I didn't do too much work, yet I learned so much and got into what we were learning about. His tests are based on his reviews and there aren't many curveballs. So yeah, Whelan is incredible and you should take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1350 - Whelan is a great professor! He's a super sincere and nice guy. Open to office hours, questions and emailing. He gives a lot of helpful material for studying. The readings are a bit lengthy sometimes but definitely needed for lectures and exams (which are not too difficult). I definitely recommend taking this class  - Grade In Class:A
