Comments:CHE4341 - Dr. Lahousse is very sweet and is a great professor who wants her students to succeed. The course itself is not easy and the material can get quite dense which means she often goes very fast through the material in class. However, she is very helpful if you ask questions and go to her office hours. There is no real homework but she does post unweighted canvas quizzes for practice. There are in-class quizzes every week (3 drops) which are basically free points if you stay on top of the material, and her exams are difficult, but very fair. It is a 93 for an A but there are a lot of extra credit opportunities (bonus questions on exams, points for attending recitation, final replaces lowest grade, etc.) which makes a difficult class quite manageable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:biochemistry 4341 - I got an A- in this class. Lahousse gave 10 points of extra credit questions on each exam. This semester, she mostly had free response questions which is a hit or miss for grading. I went into office hours asking about certain questions, and sometimes, she would give me a few points back on the free-response questions. She also gives .05% extra credit to your total grade if you attend recitations. You also get course evaluation extra credit. She also curved a lot of the exams. Other than the grading, Lahousse is such a kind person. I loved going to her office hours because she would always prepare me for that week's quiz. She never made me feel stupid for asking questions and she made sure I fully grasped the concept before moving on which I appreciated. I mostly skimmed the textbook to reinforce topics from lecture since her powerpoints can sometimes be vague. If you're struggling in biochemistry, watch AK lectures, however she tests from her powerpoint. If she doesn't cover it in class, she won't test on it. Also, if she keeps repeating something, or she wants you to fully understand a concept, just know it'll for sure be on the exam and probably be worth a lot of points. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 4341 - Biochem is not easy. But to be objective, I am glad I took Lahousse. For one, she teaches during class time and has time for office hours through zoom or in person. Her exams were pretty heavy free response this year which kinda killed me and I didnt really test well in her class despite taking notes and attending every class. But the content is difficult by nature, so I'm grateful to have gotten a B and having gotten a C on basically every exam. She was generous with points and slight curves. I would take her again, but spending more time conceptually considering problems. I barely used the textbook, found it online. She's also pretty open about her personal life and is very wholesome.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIOCHEM - Honestly, I was super nervous about taking biochemistry knowing that I didn't have the best chem background beforehand. However, Dr.Lahousse was amazing. She was the sweetest lady ever, and made me enjoy learning about biochem. Her class consists of 4 exams (64%), a final (16%), and quizzes (20%).The quizzes are every Friday about the topic covered that week which helps you stay on top of the material. She does let you know when and what the quiz will be on. It can seem a bit daunting but she offers extra credit on the exams, through the recitation class you have to take (ATTEND ALL OF THEM TO GET ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT) and also gives extra credit for doing the course eval. She is so sweet and understanding. I do admit that the material is hard to grasp at first during class because she has to go so fast, but I went to her office hours all the time and she would always explain everything to me so that I understood. Her exams are a mix of both MC and frq, which she is very particular about at times. She posts "homework" online to practice and learn the concepts the way she questions them on the test. They aren't for a grade, but definitely helpful to learn how to apply the material. Overall, I think she is the best biochem professor, and would definitely take her again for other courses.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 4341 - Biochemistry - I adore this woman. She has made me love biochemistry more than I thought I would going into the class. First, she is the sweetest woman I've ever met, so personable, I can talk to her about random things and she loves to talk to us and joke around with us. She is a great lecturer and is super engaging, she makes the content digestible and interesting. I will say, in lecture, I don't think her power-points cover some of the material in enough depth and I often had to do some outside learning/research to fully grasp the content. However, I will give her leniency on this because if you go to her office hours and make the effort, she will explain a concept over and over again until you understand. One of the most patient professors ever. I love that she did not assign mandatory homework, most students will agree that professors who assign meaningless achieve/online HW assignments are just making our lives harder, and that those assignments are extremely unhelpful and don't resemble exams. She instead gives homework assignments on canvas of her own personally made questions, that don't ultimately count towards your grade, but are encouraged and very helpful. She has 4 regular exams and a final, along with a quiz every week (except on exam weeks). Exams are 30% MC and 70% calculations/free response. Quizzes are MC or work out problems, it varies. She lets you know exactly what the quiz will be about that week. It is a bit much at times but there is a lot of information to cover and it's a 4000 level class so I can't complain about that. Her exams are more than fair, as well as the quizzes, as long as you actually study. I probably spent about 3-4 hours studying for quizzes and 20-25 hours for exams, and got an A on every quiz and every exam. Study her powerpoints, ask questions, go to office hours, and utilize outside sources on the more difficult material. BTW the book is a waste of money, I probably used it twice. Overall, I feel she has prepared me well for the MCAT and I feel like I have learned so so much in this class. She connects the material to real-world stuff which makes it more interesting - I appreciate when professors make those connections, instead of spewing out science without explaining why it is important. TAKE HER. SHE IS THE BEST.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 4341 - Dr Lahousse is great for Biochem. Her class is lectures and then exams are pretty much 50/50 on multiple choice and free response. Dr. Lahousse has pretty much weekly canvas homework, but you get three tries on it and can see which ones you got wrong. Plus, if you do it early enough Dr. Lahousse is open to helping. Exams were curved depending on how well we did or if there was extra credit questions or not. There are also small in class quizzes (5 questions or less) every two weeks or so, just to make sure your up to date on material. Overall, the class is very doable and I enjoyed Dr Lahousse.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4341 - Dr. Lahousse is the best freaking professor ever. She's super helpful and will make time to see you, even if it isn't during her usual office hours. If it takes explaining the concept 14 times, she will do that and is incredibly patient. Biochem is a difficult class but she makes it very enjoyable. She does not give busy work; all of the HW and quiz questions are meant to teach you a concept or help you memorize for the exams. The exams are about half MC and half open response, but she grades very fairly and gives as much partial credit as possible. If you go to her office to review your exam, she will often give points back. As long as you memorize everything on the powerpoints in class (including the figures), then you will be absolutely fine and there's lots of extra credit toward the end.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4341 - Dr. Lahousse is literally the nicest lady I have ever met in my entire life. She is incredibly helpful in office hours and even during her lectures. She'll stop the class just to make sure she thinks everyone understands what's going on. She does give a lot of quizzes in class (and online since I took this in covid-19 szn), but they're always announced and if a majority of the class gets a type of question wrong she will go over it in class or in an email to make sure it's clear to everyone. When I say she's nice, I mean that I once came to her office hours intending to take the test that evening (she has evening exam where you can choose to take it on Friday night or Saturday), but I was absolutely not ready. I couldn't wait to take the exam at the same time as the rest of the class the next day because I was going out of town, so she asked when I thought I could be ready the next day and set up a personal time for me to take the exam. Her tests are in two parts (half multiple choice and half essay) and I won't lie the multiple choice is some of the hardest MC I've ever had in my life and is often very specific, but if you can memorize all the details of her slides (even the pictures), they can be done. Her essay portion is A LOT easier and she really tries to give you as much credit as possible. She assigns reading sections for the exam, but honestly you could get by without reading them as long as you understand the content on the slides. She has online homework due for every chapter and it's really random stuff, but easy to find in the textbook (you don't need to study any of it for the exam). I really would encourage taking Dr. Lahousse, she is very thorough in what you need to know for MCAT stuff while trying not to ruin your life. Of course all of this is dependent on how much effort you put into the class because biochem is not easy by any means, but regardless she will try to help you out.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4341 - Dr. Lahousse is a fantastic lecturer and the best one I had this semester. Biochem is a very difficult class to succeed in but she teaches the class very well and has a lot of office hours to meet with students and work one on one with them. She tests on the big picture and each exam is fair, she'll tell you what you need to study as well which saves time. If I were to take the class again I would for sure take it with her.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4341 - Dr.Lahousse is such a sweet lady! I learned so much from her and her class and loved it despite how difficult it was. By far my favorite class in undergrad. I spent several hours a week in her office because she is insanely helpful. I would review exams, ask questions, and even get helpful hints for how to study/what to study just because I asked. She really cares for her students and wants them all to succeed, but she also wants us to learn all of the required material. This class is far from easy, but if you are prehealth it should definitely interest you and that makes studying so much better. I loved learning all of the concepts in this class and it made me more passionate about the field I am pursuing. Also, I failed the first exam and am definitely going to make a B+ in the class (because I averaged a B in exam grades) which is extremely uplifting after feeling so doubtful after the first exam. Just don't give up, try your best and definitely go speak with her. She is fantastic!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1100 - Dr. Lahousse is so sweet. 1100 is pretty easy, all you have to do is show up to lab lecture and turn in lab reports. As long as you get a nice TA the lab reports are easy to get a good grade on.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 4341 - Dr. Lahousse is really nice and helpful and most days she won't bore you to sleep. I mean, its biochem so it's going to be hard. The tests are part multiple choice and part short answer. The first 2 tests were pretty fair if you studied the info, but the last two are more difficult. There were quizzes every week, a homework assignment per chapter (which can take a little bit of time) a presentation that you have to do with a partner (not bad at all). I've learned quite a bit in her class, but I also had to teach myself quite a bit as well.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1100 - Dr. Lahousse is a very nice and sweet woman, she is very great at teaching this course, in lecture she explains exactly what is to be done for lab. There was no final, so the grade was basically just lab reports, lecture attendance, and quiz grades.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem 1101 - Very nice woman. Work is super easy and there is little time commitment... its Chem 1101. TA's instruct most of the lab due to it being 1101. You really shouldn't have a problem getting atleast an A-, considering all you do is follow along for the entire semester complete straight forward assignments.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1101 - For a Chemistry 1101 Lab Instructor, Dr. Lahousse is exceptionally bad. Since a TA does most of her teaching and grading for her, she is never in the actual lab, making her extremely unavailable for questions. She grades very harshly on virtual labs. Several people in the lab this semester got in trouble for cheating, even when they said several times that they did not cheat. It is hard to tell, since our virtual labs were all online-based and each student would have gotten similar answers anyway. Some students reported their false accusations to the department chair. All in all, she takes this course way too seriously, considering that it is a one-hour lab course that we are all required to take. On the other hand, her TA's are amazing and help make the class bearable. I think she teaches most sections of this lab, but just know going into it that she is rough.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1100 - Dr. Lahousse is a really nice lady but the class is pointless. We learn almost nothing in lab lecture and half the time what is lectured isn't even a part of the lab. Most people either watch Netflix or do other homework while she talks. There is a quiz every day you have lab, but it is more of a guessing game because it's over really specific things from the pre-lab. It isn't too hard to get an A as long as you have a good lab TA.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1100 - She tells you to bring your lab manual to lecture and makes it seem like you will cover most of the questions in clas ---wrong. Everyone I knew in lab ended up googling the questions and jsut didn't pay attention during lecture. Her in lab quizzes were ridiculous. They were really detailed and would have questions like "what did step 14 say?" She's okay, but the most boring class  - Grade In Class:A
