Comments:3210 - 10/10 professor, highly recommend taking this class (especially during summer). Matson truly loves what he does and it is evident. His passion about the environment and field work is truly inspiring. If you like environmental studies, you will end up loving it by the end of his class. During summer he only gave one exam, which was the final, and it was all essay questions based on what we did for each lab and their significance. If you are good at writing scientifically the lab reports will be a breeze, if not don't worry you will have lots of practice during the class. Everything you need to know and do for the entire class he tells you during his lecture. He is an extremely fair grader for the lab reports as well as the exam. Pre-warning for summer you will sweat a lot so be prepared! Sometimes it can become redundant but its extremely helpful so pay attention!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3210 - Honestly this is my favorite class I've taken at Baylor so far- if you learn by "doing", you will love this class! The lab reports can be time consuming, but he will explain what he is looking for and why he wants you to discuss certain aspects. The final is all free-response, covering broad topics and applications throughout the coarse. He is not an easy grader, but he grades fairly.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3210, 2307 - In both of the classes I had Matson for, I could tell how much he cared about what he was teaching. He also puts a lot of effort into engaging with his students and giving everyone the best chance to learn the material. He is a super fun and nice guy and I enjoyed both classes. The coursework and tests were very fair, and he curved when he needed to. Highly recommend.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2307 Ecology - Dr. Matson is so passionate about what he teaches which makes class so much more enjoyable! There are several quizzes and a few are dropped. The tests are challenging and you need to be careful in how you read the questions.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2307 - I've taken ecology and environmental science over and over, so I had solid background in this class before taking it. I'm also good at multiple choice tests. With that established, this class was super easy--I never took notes on lecture or read at all, and getting an A was a breeze. I do think Dr. Matson is a good lecturer, and his tests are based on the lecture slides so as long as you look at them (they are online) you should be good to go. If you are ENV and have some level of knowledge in ecology already, this class will be a great experience and easy A. No work outside of class except one essay, which was graded easily. If you don't do well with multiple choice or ecology as a subject, maybe you'll have a different experience. All I can say is that he's an interesting lecturer and I enjoyed every aspect of the class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2307 - Based on the class structure, it's nearly impossible to make an A. There are 3 multiple choice exams and 12 multiple choice quizzes. There is one paper that counts as a quiz grade. If you arent good at multiple choice, you're SOL because those are literally the only grades the class is comprised of. The tests go way too in-depth for a 2000 level class. There were always questions over random specific examples from the book which was frustrating because that tests memory not true knowledge. Real deep learning did not occur in this class because every single day was lecture with no class discussion.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:ENV 2307 - I'm super torn about this professor. I really like him and his sense of humor. However, his grading system makes it very difficult to get an A. To start off, each class he has power points that hit the high points of the chapter and are extremely useful when studying. Before he starts each chapter, there is usually a quiz so you have to read the chapter. The quizzes are only 5 questions. Exams are not too bad as long as you study. There are a few essay assignments which are interesting and fairly easy but long as he requires them to be two pages single spaced. So when talking about the work in the class I would say it's not too bad but there is quite a bit of reading. What makes the class tricky is the grading. There are 3 total exams (the final is not cumulative) which are worth 25% each so a total of 75% of the grade comes from exams. Quizzes and assignments make up the other 25% of the grade. For these he only takes your top 10 grades so the more quizzes the better. I think we ended up getting to drop three or four quiz grades since we had so many quizzes. However, since there are only 5 questions on quizzes, if you don't get every single question right on the majority of the quizzes then you'll end up with a bunch of 80's or worse on quizzes and your average will likely be a B for that 25%. While the exams aren't extraordinarily difficult, they are just difficult enough to make a high B on each (which is what happened to our entire class). So in the end, even if you think you've done well, making an A is nearly impossible unless you make A's on the exams or make 100's on almost every quiz.   - Grade In Class:B+
