Comments:1300 - Dr. Barish is the GOAT. Easy tests, detailed and interesting lectures, and incredibly helpful all around. Highly recommend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2385 - Barish is easily in my top 3 fav profs I've ever had at this university. He is super passionate about the material and makes it very engaging. Very helpful for papers as he encourages students to submit rough drafts to him. Personally I didn't think he was a hard grader but some classmates thought he was. The readings were pretty chill, you either had to pay attention in class or do the reading to succeed, but you didn't really have to do both. Anytime we had a paper, the following week we wouldn't have HW, we'd just watch a movie or documentary in class. Truly one of the sweetest profs at the school, I'm looking forward to taking him again. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4305 - Dr. Barish is easily among my five favorite profs at Baylor, but I won't lie, his class was the one I struggled in the most. In his defense, it was my worst semester mental health-wise and life-wise, and when I brought these situations to his attention, he was very understanding and offered to give me deadlines on the quizzes or allow me not to be in class for the day. It's my own choice that I didn't do that, and that did affect my grade more than I anticipated. However, he was very helpful when it came to our assignments. There's a lot more reading than I expected, often ranging from 80–100 pages a week. If you want to go to grad school in history, though, his class is the best to prepare you. He's a more lenient grader than I expected, but he's not going to just hand out As, you need to put in the effort. Also: USE THE ROUGH DRAFT DEADLINES. They will save your grade so much. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Japan - One of the kindest, most enthusiastic, and positive teachers I've had in the History department- you can really tell that Dr. Barish loves his class, his subject, and each of his students. He really wants to see you succeed and will encourage you all along the way. Do be warned though, with his teaching style he expects A LOT of reading. Each class will have roughly 50 pages of detailed historical texts at minimum, probably more, and on more than one occasion he has had the class read an entire book for an assignment or paper. I would think twice about taking him if you don't do well with reading huge amounts of material, as it really never lets up. In terms of his personality and teaching ability, though, he is fantastic. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4305 Modern China - dedicated, caring, and enthusiastic professor. This semester I felt as though he were helping us succeed through encouragement rather than negative learning experiences, which I for one deeply appreciate. this class sparked my personal interest in modern-day China. I now to study the country further, potentially through research work or in a career. I also have a dream of one day becoming a college professor, and I hope that my classroom can become as excellent as his. two normal papers, daily readings and response, class participation, final is also a paper, up to three percentage points of extra credit offered (read a book and write a review). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Modern/Traditional China - I created an account just to talk about Dr. Barish. Absolutely the best teacher I have ever had. You will have preparation questions before almost every class. Quizzes are easy and so are the tests. Neither class is a breeze, but Dr. Barish makes you want to try harder than other professors do. I studied more for this class than I did other classes, even though it not my hardest class. He remembered my name and essay that I wrote a year after taking his class. Take this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - AMAZING PROFESSOR! He is such a good teacher! he explains everything very well, you may think "oh wow history what a bore", but he actually makes it intresting and he is super great with any questions you have. If he doesn't know them he will find someone that does. He cares about his students dearly and wants to see you succeed and will help you in any way he can. His tests are easy and if you know any basic history you don't need the book. This class is pretty much a free A, while also learning a lot at the same time. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:world history - TAKE THIS MAN! Dr. Barish is such a cool guy but is also so obviously smart and passionate about history. His teaching style makes the class so interesting. There is reading for every class but if you do it then it is easy to engage in discussions. No written homework, a few quizzes throughout the semester, and two essays. Attendance is worth 20% so if you have perfect attendance it is a huge grade boost.I would take him again if I could. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - World History since 1500--Prof Barish is a great history professor! He is very passionate about history and explains it very well (and I am a math & science person so history is not my thing). THere's a reading for every class, however I only did like 2 of the readings and did well in class. You just have to pay attention in class to his lectures which isn't hard because he makes it so interesting. No tests, just 3 big quizzes--but he tells you exactly what topics to study so its easy to get an A. You also write 2 papers--one is ~3 pgs and one is ~5 and you have to read a book and write about it, but it's very do-able. If you have to take a history requirement, take him! I truly learned a lot and it wasn't too much work! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - Dr. Barish is phenomenal. He is a great lecturer and I highly recommend his class. He challenges you but is there to help if you need him. The preparation for each class was a lot but it is worth it if you want to participate during class. He is the best History professor I have ever had. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1307 - Dr. Barish is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He so obviously loves history and gives you plenty of help for his class. There are 2 quizzes (10%) and two papers (15%) which are the only major grades. 15% of your grade is attendance. Easy but interesting class and its discussion based so you actually get to know the kids you sit next to in class - Grade In Class:A
