*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1310 - Take him!! He's super helpful and you can tell he loves what he teaches. He does include participation in your grade, but he says at the beginning that it doesn't mean you have to speak in class if that makes you uncomfortable. You can email him with questions to earn those points or show up in office hours. Whenever he is unavailable for office hours he'll send out an email letting you know and will offer alternate times to make sure all questions are answered. Tests aren't that bad if you study for them and he underlines everything that you'll probably see on the test in red in his slides which he posts on canvas. Super chill guy and tends to relate what he's teaching to modern references which makes the class more enjoyable! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:96 - Dr. Duncan is a great teacher. He is easy to follow, and his tests are pretty straightforward compared to other classes. He underlines all the important things in his PowerPoint that could appear on the test. However, sometimes there is much more underlined than what's on the test, but if you know it all, the tests are super easy to get an A. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I have Mr. Duncan right now and I absolutely LOVEEEE his class. He explains topics very well and you can tell that he enjoys his job and isn't just a machine reading off slides. I am trying to get him for Christian Heritages and I can't wait to go through his class a second time. Truly the best teacher I had for the fall of my freshman year!!! If you're wondering more about his assignments and quizzes; you will have 2-3 Reading response assignments every week, these are not time consuming and you can choose to skip 11/all of them the whole semester, which I recommend saving for exam or finals week. You have chapter online quizzes that are each 10 questions based off of his slideshows (slideshows are lectured in class and then uploaded afterwards incase you missed anything), and you will have these chapter quizzes almost every other week. As for his exams it's the only thing I struggled on, as it is a lot of material to retain, but if you keep your grades consistent otherwise, even failing a exam here and there won't count against you. MR DUNCAN IS THE BEST!!!!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Definitely take Dr. Duncan. He's a very sweet guy, and you can tell he loves teaching. Workload is super manageable, and most of it is a completion grade so it's super easy as long as you put a little effort in. Definitely study the red underlined stuff on his powerpoints, because he takes most of his test questions from there. As long as you do the assignments, show up to class, and study the poweroints you'll do very well. I took his MWF 8am section, and I'd honestly say it was worth it for how chill this class was. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1310 - Duncan was a good professor overall, would recommend for scriptures. His tests come straight from the red underlined parts of his power points, so those shouldn't be a problem as long as you study a little bit. He gave us 31 short responses, 1 before each class, but you only have to do 21 and they're literally completion grades, so just write a few sentences and you'll be fine. He assigns 4 "longer" assignments , and you only have to do 3, and they probably only take an hour and a half each to do, again basically completion grades. Quizzes are online and open note, so out of quizzes, short responses, and the longer assignments, that's 50% of your grade that's a free 100 . The rest is the tests which again are straight from the red underlined parts of the PowerPoints that we go over in class and he posts on canvas, so it's a pretty easy grade and you learn a lot so I'd recommend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 and 1310 - Workload is manageable and we have small responses before each class that are very quick. Also, we have four short papers which are also easy 100’s. There is no reason to pay attention in class because the exam material comes from the red underlined material on the powerpoints which he posts. He is also very lenient about attendance (I skipped a lot and said I was sick every time) and he didn’t dock any points off my grade. Just make him like you and he’ll grade easier tbh. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I really enjoyed having Professor Duncan, the class itself was so boring, and having it at 8am certainly didn't help, but he's super nice. His grading is pretty easy and you do have to complete a response question before every class, but you get 6 skips for those. His tests are pretty hard but as long as you prepare you should be fine, he uploads all his slides on canvas and allows students to join the zoom instead of coming to class if they aren't feeling well. That definitely saved me a couple of times this semester. Overall I would say I had a good experience in the class. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1301 - Don't waste your time. He is very unhelpful and doesn't care about his students at all. Scriptures with this man is beyond hard and a gpa tanker. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310 - Duncan is super chill and a super straightforward professor. He tests you on what is underlined in red from his power points. If you get to know him he is a really interesting guy. He's actually not that dry. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1350 - You will not regret taking Duncan!! I took him for both Scriptures and Heritage and he is very straightforward in his teaching, as well as knowledgable. You have reading response questions almost every class, but the readings are not long and the question is often opinion-based. He notes in his PowerPoints what you have to know for the test. Very approachable and willing to meet with students after class or during office hours. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - TAKE DUNCAN. SERIOUSLY. His tests are very fair and you always know what will be on them because the material is underlined in red on the PowerPoints. The class itself is very interesting and not stressful at all. Although you absolutely have to study for the exams, they are not difficult. I studied what was in red and got almost 100 on each one! A lot of my friends with different professors struggled in Christian Scriptures, but this class was my easiest. I will be taking Duncan again for heritage next semester. Highly recommend!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I had Professor Duncan for Christian Scriptures and he was great! I will say that this class isn't easy, but if you study and pay attention in class it's not too bad. Our grades consisted of discussion posts before each class, text analysis assignments (basically essays), 3 tests, and the final. His lectures are very helpful and he even underlines the things that are going to be on the test in his powerpoints. I highly recommend him for 1310!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - Dr. Duncan was great! I took him for both Scriptures and Heritage and found his class to be very manageable. His PowerPoints are very straight-forward with what you have to know underlined in red. I only studied his underlined in red material and got almost 100s on all his exams! His exams are part multiple choice and part free response (usually vocab terms). We had discussion posts due before every class over the reading for that day that were easy 100s. Lastly we had 4 essays due over readings that weren't too difficult, should be easy 100s as long as you elaborate on what you're topic is about. Definitely recommend him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - Duncan is the best! He gives straightforward lectures with the important information underlined in red. The analysis papers and discussion posts are easy if you just put a bit of effort in. The exam questions are straight from his powerpoints and lectures so you just have to do a lot of memorization. Duncan honestly seems like a really nice professor, he memorizes everybody’s name and responds to emails pretty quickly, I highly recommend his class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1305 - Duncan is very thorough in his teaching, and the class structure is literally just long lectures. It gets boring, but it is easy to do well. Just do your discussion posts twice a week, and study well for exams and you'll do well. There are 4 short analysis papers, and he is such a nice grader. I would recommend! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1350 - Dr. Duncan is the best! His class is one of the easiest religion classes ever and you actually learn something rather than worry about your GPA. All of his test questions come straight from PowerPoint, which he posts for you on canvas. If you study the powerpoints you will have no problem getting an A in the class. Take him!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Professor Duncan is amazing. I was not looking forward to this course because I'm not religious but he does a great job of focusing on the text and not trying to force anyone onto Christianity. The tests are simple, just be sure you study your notes before the exam because you need to know some details, but the tests really were not that difficult. The hardest section of the test for me was the quotes section, but as long as you understand the storyline you can get the quotes pretty easily. There was a reading you had to do before each lecture, but if you don't get around to it there is no punishment but I definitely would not recommend getting behind on them. I had to email him a few times and he is very fast at responding and does a great job teaching during his lectures. The work can be a bit much, but nothing should take more than an hour or two. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I came in super scared about Christian Scriptures. Duncan is such a great professor. He definitely is difficult, but if you put in the effort you will do well. He does 3 tests and a final. The tests are 35 MC and 5 short answer questions. The final is the same, with 14 more MC and 3 SA that is cumulative of the semester. He also does around 8 reading quizzes that are 5 questions. Not hard if you read, and he drops the lowest. His powerpoints are straightforward, and he highlights in red the information that you need to know for the test. We also have 5 text-analysis' assignments sort of like mini essays/questions. I got 100 on every one because I spent about 2 hours on each. Duncan is so helpful and responds to emails so quickly. He also gives multiple opportunities for participation (class, discussion boards, emailing him, meeting with him). There are many ways to succeed in the class and he makes it very interesting. I ended with a B-, I got 100 on every quiz, text analysis and participation, I just struggle with tests. Hope this helps! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1310 - This class was so difficult. He did not test to help you and see that you knew the information, he tested to trick you. They were a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions. There is no right way to prepare for this class. The only way to succeed is if you come from a Christian background growing up. I knew a majority of things about the Bible but the way he tested sucked. However, he is very helpful. If you have a question or need help he will do anything he can to help you. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:REL 1310 - Honestly, I went into this class hearing terrible things about how hard Christian Scriptures at Baylor is, but I found the class with Duncan to be very interesting. You pretty much have to copy down his powerpoints word for word, but he takes exam question directly from the powerpoints and underlines the most important concepts in red. He also takes exam questions about bible quotes from his powerpoints, so I took pictures of those instead of writing them down. Duncan is a very good lecturer and does his best to make sure you fully understand the material. If you put in the work, do the readings, and study for the tests, you will easily be able to get a good grade in the class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - Duncan is one of the better profs I've had at Baylor. He's kinda monotone but he has this dry sense of humor that makes class a little easier to get through. It's Christian Scriptures so don't expect Disneyland-level entertainment, but if you are a cut and dry, type A learner and just want the straight facts for the tests and quizzes I would take Duncan. You will def have to read, but his in-class quizzes are super easy and you will do fine on the tests if you review his powerpoints. Way less workload than other scriptures classes by far. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I am currently in the middle of the semester, but I guess I can leave some of my thoughts now. This is definitely a chill class, but you may not like this specific class if you do not like reading from the textbook/bible before every class. However, this should be expected as REL1310 can pretty much be treated as a history class (remember this!). Therefore, if you love learning about important figures and events, then you will like this class even if you aren't particularly religious. Pretty much the entire test comes from the lecture powerpoints, but you still need to be able to recall events in the order that they occurred and you need to know certain quotes that are from specific books of the bible (although this isn't too hard if you know the general theme of the book). 75% of the test is MCQ while 25% is free response. The free response is definitely "harder", but if you remember what is said on the powerpoint, then it should be pretty easy as well. Overall, this class is easy if you take 30 minutes out of your day to read the selected textbook/bible passages and take notes on the powerpoint lectures. If you don't do this, then you may struggle. This class isn't how much knowledge you already have about the bible, because I knew almost nothing but got a very good score on the first exam. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Dr. Duncan is a really nice guy, but I struggled to pay attention in his 8 am Scriptures. I found some of his exams to be pretty difficult, but that's coming from someone who had 0 knowledge of Christian history (yes, we had had a whole exam covering specific historical details for Scriptures). Exams come from the lectures but the quizzes come from the weekly readings, so do those! Don't take if you're trying to cruise through Scriptures. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1350 - Dr. Duncan is a great professor! He encouraged class discussions which really helped sink in the material. His lectures and powerpoints were clear and Dr. Duncan made sure that our class was prepared for what he expected of us on the exams. His exams did challenge me, but if I studied well, I would be prepared. Dr. Duncan was always ready to answer questions, meet in office hours, or allow students to look over their past exams. He also helped guide his students make sure that they completed their reading responses to the fullest and helped us know what he expected in our assignments. Unfortunately, his attendance policy was quite strict...much more than what Baylor requires with a 75% attendance. For every missed class, you lose 10% of attendance grade (which is weighted heavily in his class). I only missed two classes (because of non-refundable flight reservations I made prior to the beginning of the semester) and when I talked to him, he said that they would still have to count as absences. That, and the A- system do make it a little hard to get an A in the class but many of us still did, so it’s doable! Just know that Dr. Duncan is a great professor but not an easy A. Dr. Duncan also does not allow his students to make up lost points, drop any assignments, or do any extra credit assignments, which of course, a professor is not required to do... but some professors do. Overall though, I think Dr. Duncan was a great professor and I enjoyed his class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Pretty solid teacher despite class being boring. He is quite thorough and you will learn a lot if you take notes. If you are interested in this topic, take Duncan. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1350 - TAKE HIM! I love professor Duncan - he's very understanding whenever you have any concerns and he expresses deep concern for his students. He cares so much about his class and is willing to do anything to make you feel more comfortable. The course definitely requires you to put in the effort but it's not overwhelming by any means. His powerpoint lectures are extremely helpful as he underlines the important subject matters to memorize in RED. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - OMG TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM! Coming from a Scriptures class that had a larger workload than any of my other classes, this was one of the best things that happened to me this semester! Don't want to write a paper - take him. Don't want to stress out over tests - take him. If you want to learn, take him. If you want to know exactly what you will be tested over, take him. If you want a nice professor, take him. SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM! As for the class you have 8 "reading responses" (sets of short answer questions over some readings; 2 sets are due in between each test and they are super easy and help you learn) and you will have 4 tests (the 4th is the final and it IS NOT COMPREHENSIVE). That's literally it. There are readings for each class but they are typically short and very interesting; he assigns them so that you can be prepared for some MILD in-class discussion. IF YOU ARE SCARED TO TALK he will let you email him questions instead to get participation credit (he is so nice!!!). Attendance is part of your grade so SHOW UP. It is a really easygoing class that you WILL get an A in if you just put even the tiniest bit of effort in. I made quizlets/kahoots with the powerpoints, if you play the kahoots with your friends you can learn and have fun (maybe even put a reward up for 1st place to spice things up). SERIOUSLY, AGAIN, TAKE HIM!!!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - I took him for Scriptures and I am so glad I did! He is one of the nicest teachers at Baylor and he takes the time to learn all of the students names in his class. He grades very fairly and even though the tests require studying they are fairly easy if you pay attention. He is also very easy to reach via email and in office hours. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Duncan's class required some work, but if you're willing to put in the effort, it'll show in your grade. There's nightly reading that takes approximately an hour or two. There are 4 tests that are all multiple choice, and he does a good job of telling you what to expect on them. You are graded on participation as well as attendance, but he understands how some people are too shy to speak up in class, so he offers other opportunities. Overall, he's a great professor! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - He is a lecturer which I enjoyed. He always was very chill and relaxed, so the class never was stressful. You have 5 quizzes throughout the year that are about whatever the reading was for that class. There are readings every night, but I personally only read for the quizzes or for the five reading responses you have to do as well. The test come word for word from the lecture. This is good and bad. Good because as long as you write down what he showed, you were good. Bad because I mean WORD FOR WORD. Questions such as "where does this verse sound like it came from?" will be on the test and if you didn't write down that super long verse, then you may not know. Overall, I recommend Duncan. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310: Scriptures - I really like him as a person. The class isn't too bad, but we don't have an SI or study guides or anything (like the person below me mentioned). The class overall I think is just unnecessarily difficult but Duncan tried to make the best of it by adding in some discussions and asking questions to check if we understood in class. He also posts all of his powerpoint on canvas after class. We have reading assignments due every class and quizzes most Thursdays but he tells you when they are. There were 3 required reading assignments for specific due dates in the year and 4 that we had to do on whichever assignments we chose throughout the semester. There is a LOT of memorization required for this class and I think it would be really useful to have a basic understanding of the bible previous to taking this class. Since I didn't know most of the Bible before this class, I struggled memorizing the massive amounts of content needed to ace this class. If you go to his office hours for help or discussion he's really helpful. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310 - This man is very sweet and helpful, but his tests are super difficult and we are not given an SI or any study guides. If you memorize EVERYTHING straight from the power points you might make an A on his exams. He is definitely not the worst by any means but try to take someone else if you can. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310 - The only work he assigns is a reading with a question before each class so workload isn't that bad. He does easy five question quizzes every now and then but tells you when they are. Tests are straight from the powerpoint and he does upload those. The final isn't cumulative except for the essay portion (but he gives you the prompt a couple days before). Would recommend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Great professor. We seemed to have more work and harder exams than other professors but Duncan was very good and helpful. - Grade In Class:A
