*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:american literature - He is such a boring teacher but it was a very easy class. He grades pretty fairly but theres also very few grades in the class at all, so make sure you do good on them. This class is not like the other ALIT classes. It is much easier. It did suck going to this class because it was so boring and felt like a waste of time simply because he is an older man who likes to tell stories rather than teach us the material we're supposed to be learning. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2301 - Dr. Ross is the greatest professor you could take at Baylor. The workload is super light and he was not a harsh grader. If you need to take an English course please take one of his. On fridays, we went to the sub Chickfila as a class! Super funny professor and we would always get sidetracked. If he likes your class, you will have a light and great semester. :) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Dr. Ross was great! His classes were basically just conversations over the reading, but he would stray often. He was very adaptable to individuals and class requests. He was willing to meet me whenever even if it was outside of office hours. This class will probably get boring if you care a lot about English but otherwise it is a pretty fun class. I will say from my experience that he is a pretty strict grader though! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:ENG 2310 - Dr. Ross's class was incredibly simple for the main reason that he was an incredibly unorganized teacher, he's def one of those professors who treat teaching like it's a part-time job they couldn't be bothered with, which mean you will likely learn nothing and do nothing for 15 weeks but still come out with an A. A lot of times you can tell that he had absolutely no lesson plans and is just going with the flow, he'll pick a piece of literature to talk about and then end up rambling on about something completely unrelated to anything, and if he ends up just being tired of talking he'll end class early. He'll cancel class if he doesn't feel like going. He's honestly pretty relatable in that regard so no one is ever mad at him when he does that stuff. There is no homework other than the readings he "expects" you to do before class but there is no way he could check if you read or not, and if I'm being honest I think you can get by the whole semester without even owning the book. The exams are timed hand written essays which I would say is the hardest part of this course, but even then it's really not that difficult because the class before the exam he'll do a review and basically tell you to exact topics the prompt will be about. there is a group project that's a 10 page essay between 4/5 people. As for the final he will give you the essay prompt and you have to turn it by the final date. He is a very easy grader so if you do an honest job you'll be fine. one thing to note though is that he somehow has an even stricter attendance policy than the university's, if you miss more than 3 classes you lose a letter grade. He also has a habit of calling on students, but he's a really friendly and witty guy with a great sense of humor so I wouldn't worry about that because he'll never call on a student in a way that's meant to put them on the spot like other professors, he just honestly wants to know what you think. He also has obvious favorites, but it won't affect you in any way if you're not one of his favorites, he'll just not talk to you as often. If you need a GPA boost while knocking a gen-ed out of the way I'd recommend this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:American Literature - He ate, slayed, and left 0 crumbs. He is so wise and grandfatherly. 10/10 would recommend it to everyone. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2301 - This man is very witty and fun to talk with in class. The lectures can feel long but his sarcasm makes them a lot more enjoyable. For how the class is structured, there are 3 exams with each of them all being free-response. About the first half includes answering questions asking about facts said in class or material from the readings and the other half consists of a short essay that should be guaranteed max credit as long as what you’re writing makes sense. You’ll have weekly readings but splitting the reading load each day means they’re very bearable. If you have any questions to ask him outside of class texting is the best way. Throughout the semester, you’ll have to write a 6-10 page essay critiquing a novel of his choosing which sounds daunting but the essay is heavily opinion based. Did I mention he’s retiring after this fall? - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2301 - Dr. Ross is extremely unique. You will succeed and have a great time in this class if you learn to just play along with his endless, seemingly meaningless quips and rants. If you challenge him and tease him a bit he will love you. And although he may seem cold and unapproachable on the first day he is actually one of the nicest and personable professors I have had at Baylor. So much so that I wrote my first review of a teacher just to praise this guy. The work in this class is extremely minimal. His lectures are boring and you learn nothing pertaining to the class, but you do learn quite a bit about random interesting things. He often cancels class and his tests are not difficult at all. Take Dr. Ross. Easy A and a very kind and fun dude. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2301 - Dr. Ross is a character. You will do well in his class if you give him at least minimal effort. Assignments are often vague and confusing. This man absolutely loves British Literature, I have never met someone who so much appreciated the subject. He will often cover poems that are off the syllabus during his lectures. His exams are only difficult because he expects you to know a bit about a lot of topics and writings, although he lets us pick most of the questions ourselves. Very heavy reading assignments, but honestly if you just google the topic of the reading before you get to class, that will be enough to make you not look like an idiot in his class, and he does not enjoy when you blatantly have no idea what is going on. HATES multiple choice questions with a passion. Overall, nice guy. He is very knowledgeable. Never had to ask many questions. I don't know why you'd ever need to go to his office hours, which is convenient because for most of the semester, he did not have a key to his office and most of the time forgot his lecture notes or the book. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Dr. Ross is nice, but we never learned anything in class. We would sit in class while he talked about random things. It is a very boring class but sometimes he would let us out early. You could miss every class and still not miss out on anything. You only have three essays, and he usually extended the due dates for them if we asked. He also includes a participation grade for each month in the semester. He gets this participation grade from your average in class and attendance. We have no readings, no discussions, and no extra writing assignments. Easy workload, just a really boring class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Prof Ross is a gem. He doesn't actually teach in this class so you can show up and pay no attention. He assigns way too much reading but you don't have to do any of it; just come prepared to say a thing or two about one of the many, many, stories he assigned. There is a fair a fair amount of writing and two tests, but he is an easy grader if you put work into the few assignments you turn in. I blew this class off and did well. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1310 - Mr. Ross is an awesome guy to talk to though his classes are so beyond boring. You rarily have class and he will go off on tangents often. He has yet to grade anything and we are 2 weeks away from the final. He is very lazy and only grades for grammar rather than content. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310 - Professor Ross is amazing, I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. He takes the time to learn about his students and to become personal with them. The classwork is not difficult at all, the only thing you do is write essays and review classmate's essays. He was great, his lectures were fun to go to, and he was hilarious. I never had to request him for office hours, but I truly do not see why you would need to because the assignments were very straightforward and the writing center can help you with questions you have about your essay. The highest grade he gives out on an essay is a 95 so know that if you really don't like that, that is just how he grades. As long as you stay on top of your work you can get an A or A- in this class no problem. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG1304 - He never answers emails. If you're able to meet with him, it is quite helpful, if you're lucky enough to get a response. Especially in COVID19 situation, he should have had enough time to get back to me. He makes a 95 an A which isn't possible if you get a B/85 on the paper worth the least. He tries to make all of his papers go with a post-truth theme that gets old fast and gives very little wiggle room for creativity. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1304 - Dr. Ross is one of my favorite professors that I have had at baylor. He is a great guy who jokes around throughout the class and gets to know his students. He grades the first essay hard which he tells you but its because the others are worth more and he wants you to know what hes looking for on the one that isnt worth as much. he really cares about grammar but he also shows you what hes looking for and goes over it multiple times. You also get 2 peer review days for every paper and a meeting with him after you turn it in so he can go over it all with you. Overall hes a great teacher with a good class. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:ENG 2303 - Although I got an A in the course it was NOT easy. This is BY FAR the worst professor I have had at Baylor. Highly unhelpful. going to class is useless because you never do anything in class that ever counts for a grade. Throughout the course you do 4 essays. 3 of these essays are on prompts that he gives you and each is worth 20% of your grade, we also did a novel critique that was worth 40%. besides the essays you don't have to do much, the readings for class are stupid because no one reads them, and he will just lecture over them. DO NOT buy the book it’s a waste of money, this is coming from someone who wasted the money. He is very liberal, and he makes that clear through comments he makes throughout class. He doesn’t know his own syllabus, there are many errors on it. overall, I would not recommend professor Ross, he will cause you more headaches than it is worth. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1304 - Dr. Ross is one of the most caring professors I have ever taken at Baylor. He makes sure all questions are answered, even ones that aren't asked... We were supposed to have quite a few quizzes, but after two he let us vote if we wanted more, and of course we all voted no. He also let us vote on some of the due dates for the major writing assignments. Overall he is a very chill professor and gives a lot of days in class to write, sometimes even "research days" where we don't even meet in class. I wouldn't recommend taking him Tues/Thurs as he does tend to lecture randomly over small grammar things that aren't important and listening to him go on and on for more than half an hour is tiring. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2301 - If you are an avid fan of British literature who wants to get the most out of this subject, then you'd be better off not taking Ross. If you're just looking to satisfy your required credits though, he's a great professor to take. He expects you to read the material and to be able to discuss it in class, but other than that there's no homework. The tests were all take-home essay questions, including the final, and he's a very generous grader. He likes to go off on tangents and ramble sometimes, but he's a really nice guy and is very understanding. Highly recommend him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2301 - I took him for Brit Lit. This class was overall very enjoyable. He really doesn't expect much out of you, as long as you can come to class prepared and hold a discussion on the material, I'm sure you're really enjoy this class. He likes to ramble and randomly input things about his life. Its a pretty easy class as long as you can put in the work to write a good essay, he almost always accepts them late too. Tests were take home essays, including the final with relatively easy prompts to follow. The only homework was to read and be prepared to discuss poetry from the text book. He did quizzes every once in a while for attendance and it only helped your grade. I enjoyed this class and would definitely take it again. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2301 - This class is so boring. I do not like English or history, so sitting in the classroom listening to him read a textbook of English history was awful to endure. He wants everyone to contribute and will call on people randomly to make sure that everyone talks. Everyone failed our first test, so he dropped it and turned the rest of our tests into essays. GRAMMAR is a big deal, and he is extremely picky. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PAPER HAS NO GRAMMATICAL ERRORS!!! This class is extremely boring, and I would not take Dr. Ross again if I had the option, but it was manageable. He also has an extremely dry sense of humor and enjoys it when people call him out or talk back to him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2301 - Dr. Ross is a very kind and personable guy. Unless you are fascinated with British Literature and want to get the most out of the subject I would suggest you take him. His class is super easy and he is a phenomenal man. His teaching style is laid back and open for discussion which makes for an interesting class time. Take Gary Ross and you won’t regret it! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 1304 - I read reviews for this class after i signed up for him and almost crapped my pants. I thought his class was gong to be the worst I had ever taken at BU. I was even more afraid because I did not think I was a good writer (which may be most of you). But let me tell you this guys is the GOAT!!! He takes about 3 class periods to get used to because he has VERY DRY humor. But he is honestly one of the nicest people I have ever met and he really ONLY cares about grammar. People if you want AN A just make sure your paper has good grammar THAT IS IT!!! Use the "Grammarly" site and you will get 100's on his papers. That is what I did. Oh ya, I forgot to mention that he literally told my class at the beginning of our final that we could all go home and there was NO FINAL! GARRY FOR PREZ! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG2301 - I read through the BU Books reviews on this guy and was not excited for this class. I read about him being a rough teacher, so I went into the class with that mentality. I was very happy when I realized how wrong the reviews were. I loved this class. It was a very small class and he made a point for all of us to get to know each other, which helped so much for in-class discussions and made us all pretty comfortable around each other to discuss. It IS a very big workload and there is a lot of reading (obviously), but when you actually put forth the effort and read the material, take good notes on what he talks about in class, and utilize the writing center, you WILL get a good grade. He loves when he sees students going the extra mile and putting forth the effort to do well. My particular class was an hour and 15 minutes, and not once did we ever stay in class that long. He always let us out early or cancelled class. I seriously wouldn't have changed a thing. He is a very nice, funny professor and he wants his students to do well. Please don't read the other reviews on him and decide against him as a professor - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1304 - Dr. Ross is a very sweet old man but he is not a great teacher. If you want to be lectured for an hour and 15 minutes and then receive absolutely no guidelines for an essay, take him. All of his essay grades are based on grammar and not necessarily on content. Only about three people made A's on one essay, I was one of them and still do not recommend him. Don't take him if you can avoid him! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Eng 1304 - This professor lectures for an hour and 15 mins on different types of verbs and then doesnt give any prompt or rubric for an essay. Average grade for an essay was typically below and 85, unless you have perfect grammar choose another professor. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1304 - I have always had A's in English my entire life, but this professor made this class way harder than it should have been and also graded way too hard. He is extremely biased in his political views and will count off of your papers if you do not agree. Additionally, he has not taught me anything new in class all semester. He is a sweet old man but a bad teacher and if you can get any other professor for what should be an easy A, do it - Grade In Class:B
