Comments:5324 - Disclamer: This is for the Online MSCS where the course is made by Cerney, but taught by another prof Honestly, I do not know who let this amount of work to pass in making a course. You would think someone would at least look over it to make it reasonable, but this class is like taking 3 other classes in one. It is actually comically ridiculous how much work there is. Here is a brief overview: 1 semester long project, 1 presentation project, a project for the test, "mini" projects that actually take hours to do that are due each week, project from a spring boot book. On top of this there is a plethora of documentation that is needed to be done. A assignment being 20+ pages long is not uncommon to see. Now that was just the workload, the course is actually just straight up bad. There is a lot of conflicting information and the quizzes are just stealing points away from you. Many of the quizzes have bad wording and is impossible to get 100 on because it they ask on things not mentioned in the lectures. It wasn't uncommon to see students saying they thought the question meant something else and having a 40% class average on some of them. The cherry on top is for some of the assignments, Cerney did not even bother updating them for 8 YEARS. You will spend 5 hours just trying to get his code running before even starting the actual assignment. (This is actually common place in this class, I found myself spending hours just getting initial code running because it runs deprecated and outdated versions). All in all, the projects can be summed up to spending hours in the POM wondering why maven isn't building due to unsupported dependencies. The actual professor for the class is nice and nothing against him, which is why I am listing this under Cerney as he did make the course. As for a suggestion if he does want to fix it: If you can't compromise on the workload, at least give code that works out of the box at a bare minimum. Students shouldn't have to debug your broken code for hours.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CSI5324 - Thomas Cerny is the crown of failure of the Baylor Computer science department to act against such deviated professors in teaching. Thomas Cerny outright has such horrible teaching skills that cannot be ignored. Each semester the students knock on the department door with concerns and yet they get ignored. What is crossing the line for Baylor Computer Science Department? A professor that has no skill or interest in teaching; A professor who is outright biased towards the student who shows interest in working with him; A professor who puts out an unreasonable amount of workload; A professor who piggybacks into fandom on works put on by the students; A professor who manipulates students into submission through fear and unethical work abuse; A professor whose most papers are irrelevant and has no association to him and just mentions his name and citation; A professor who abuses the vulnerable masses of his international students. I have never met such a manipulative, abusive, ignorant and unethical person in my life.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3471 - Out of all CS classes so far this one has been the most relevant because you work on building at least semi-realistic apps. However, he has us using the Java Swing framework which is so useless I don't know how else to describe it. I'm not sure who in the CS department is like "Oh yea teaching them Swing is a good idea", but I guess Cerny is that guy. That being said, the concepts and things you learn are useful and Cerny teaches them in a pretty good way—relative to other professors at Baylor. He also wants us to be successful and really helps you to succeed with your grade.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:CSI 3471 - There are two courses I think are the most difficult in CS major so far. One is CSI 3344, another is this course. As other ratings describe, there is a lot of work to do in this class. Because this course includes too much material. At least one or two big topics such as Swing, JUnit will be covered in a week. Tests and practicums are hard. In this semester, I even thought I would fail this course. Although this lesson is difficult, you can really learn a lot. I can see that the professor really wants to help everyone to succeed in this course.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Software I - Dr. Cerney is a poor lecturer and expects great work. His class is difficult and time consuming, but easily is one of the most important classes you will take. I've had 3 internships and the topics/tech stack covered in his class were very important to my success. He is helpful, ambitious, but not unfair.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Software Engineering I - Dr. Cerny's lectures are awful, and his course is trial by fire. However his course was easily the most applicable for me in my internship experience. Dr. Cerny is not a bad instructor. He understands the material as well as a professor can, but a language barrier can cause issues in his instruction.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CSI3471 - You will learn a ton of stuff from his class, which is a good thing and a bad thing. Because that also means a lot assignments. Usually there is one assignment, and a lab each week, but it is impossible to finish the lab within just two hours, so you will have to bring it home and continue work on it. The exams are pretty hard, and he grades really hard. However, if you stick to the end, he will give you a ton of extra credits, he curved my C+ to a B+. To be honest, this class should be a 8-hour class based on the workload, but he is fair if you are at least trying  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Software 1 - I cannot figure out how to remove my old review so I will just leave a new one. While this class was not a pleasant experience for me, in hindsight it was beneficial and I do not look on it as badly as before. You will learn Java very well by the end of the class and I think that is actually very beneficial for later classes. I have found advanced classes much easier because of the experience I gained from the programs on topics in his class. While I think that there are things to be improved in the class I think it is valuable. The stuff you learn in this class and software 2 are where most money is made in this major so you might as well get to know it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3471 - I think Cerny is an amazing professor. Yes, he essentially massacred his previous Software I class but he learned from his mistakes and did a great job with this class. Don't get me wrong though, his class is still super hard and if you aren't a strong coder, you're gonna struggle with the assignments and labs. The tests are still ridiculously hard (averages in the 40s) but he lets you make it up for partial credit so it balances itself out. He is also a hilarious person. He gets a bad rap because of his class last semester but he's an incredibly smart guy who is still learning about teaching. I would recommend taking him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CSI 3371 & 3130 - I'm editing this review about a year later from when I originally wrote it. I used to think he was a terrible professor and I wrote a really scathing review at the end of my semester but now I realize that he in fact prepared me extremely well for the later courses and they are way harder than Cerny's class ever was. It's intensive and you'll suffer a little bit, but you'll be thankful for it later.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Software Egr 1 and Java - I had mixed feelings about both of Cerny's classes. He is a really nice guy, and he ended up curving my C+ to a B just because "I deserved more than a C+". It is also very evident that he cares that his students learn the material. However, Dr. Cerny's teaching ability is close to none. His thick accent and constant butchering of the English language make it tough to pay attention in his class, and his lesson plan seemed unorganized and all over the place. He would constantly change up the syllabus, and made the scope of the class way too broad to actually fully learn the material. (For example, a pretty good portion of Java had to do with databases, so the students who weren't concurrently enrolled in a Database class struggled. He also randomly added a networking section that confused almost everyone in the class). As for the workload, it is probably the weight of 12 credit hours, not 4. The workload is just unreasonable and at times, not doable. He also has a terrible habit of assigning about 10 hours worth of homework on Tuesday, but makes it due Thursday morning, rather than spread the homework out over a week (So be prepared to spend all Tuesday and Wednesday night working on assignments). The project also sucks, but he will grade it pretty easy. If you have to take one of his classes, I would definitely pair it with easier classes as this will definitely be your most time-intensive class.  - Grade In Class:B
