Comments:2416 - For starters, most of these reviews, while still from long ago, does not reflect Gallagher in a good light. Yes, this class is incredibly hard and exams are not that straightforward, but Dr. Gallagher will indeed reward your hard efforts, even if your average for the exams is in the low 80s/high 70s. I won't lie, but the only reason I got an A in this class is because of the amounts of extra credit I received. If you are planning to take Analytical Chemistry, be fully prepared what will be thrown at you. The lectures, while beneficial in some aspect every time, are mostly pointless as it is her mainly reading off the slides. The lab associated to the class is also very unpredictable and I highly recommend discussing with TA's about how to get the points you want on the lab reports. Gallagher herself is such a wonderful person (and I'm not saying this because "i gOT aN A"), but in order to fully understand things for exams, YOU MUST attend office hours and ask her questions about content (she also helps with the lab reports, but it's best to go straight to the TA as they each have a slightly different rubric). Sometimes Dr. Gallagher may come off as this rude person, but it's not because she hates you... it's just how she is. She wants to see you succeed. For some main tips, DO THE TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS which she gives at the beginning of each section slides (some even showed up on the exam in some form!), read the slides outside of class time since her reading of off them in class can only do you so much good, and attend office hours for both the TA's and Gallagher herself. ALL EXAMS ARE CUMMULATIVE which might sound bad, but she REALLY wants you to know this stuff as Analytical Chemistry is in many aspects of chemistry. This is probably one of the better professors to have in regards to A-Chem since the professors before her were way worse. This class requires way more for a 4 hour class than you think, so I recommend taking a light workload for the semester you choose to take A-Chem as it is important to be on top of this class or you WILL fall behind very quickly. As a final note, I recommend taking Gen Chem II before this class as concepts reappear, but you work on these concepts (I know only Gen Chem I is needed, but don't let that fool you!)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE2416 - This class is pretty brutal, to be 100% honest. It is without a doubt the hardest class I have taken since my college career began. Conceptually, it seems like the class is much more straight forward, since most of the topics are topics you review in Gen Chem II, but that is a complete misrepresentation. The class is exceptionally hard primarily because of the standards that are set in order to succeed in the class. In lab and in class, you are essentially expected to be perfect and the room for error is much smaller than any other class. That being said, in my opinion, Dr. Gallagher is one of the best teachers I have had, from an objective point of view. Make sure to attend every single class period that you can because she is extremely knowledgeable about her field and explains things extremely well for the most part. In terms of exams, the thing that makes them really difficult is that you essentially are expected to have a really solid grasp of every single thing you covered. You need to know how to do everything from each slide because it WILL show up on the exam, and since there just is a lot of content that becomes really tedious. Lab is a little different, in that it is just a little bit frustrating in its inconsistency. One time youll get an A on a report and the next time you will get a C but you did nothing different. Ultimately, this class had me working harder than I ever had, and it really can beat you down if you let it. I would recommend making friends in the class because going through this class alone would be exponentially worse. Dr. Gallagher is super helpful at the end of the semester because she offers substantial extra credit that will completely turn around your grade in the class so make sure to do it. The class is really tough, and sometimes miserable, but its not impossible and is sometimes genuinely really interesting.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2416 - There are some simply ridiculous reviews below. This class is not impossible, this class is by no means out of the reach of any student who passes chem 1/2... This class literally just expands on many of those topics and has lab theory components. There were two mid terms and a final. There are so many grades for this class a single grade was near insignificant. For example, the final exam, the biggest grade, was 150 out of 1110 points... so like 13%. Lab is time consuming for this course, but the class is literally called LAB MEASURING AND TECHNIQUES... like what do you expect. Even so, the lab grades were predominantly based on reports written for the weekly experiment. Expectations were very clear for this course and testing material adequately met those expectations. Many recommend not taking this course in conjunction with genetics and ochem. I highly disagree, by no means exceedingly difficult. Dr. Gallagher is an extremely intelligent chemist. She does have limited POSTED availability, but always makes time through emails. Sapling was a difficult part of this class but it was completed. Make friends, go to SI, work hard in lab. This class is great to learn from one of Baylor's best professors, do not squander this opportunity.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2416 - I am a fair person and I love professors who challenge students in a fun and engaging way. That being said, Elyssia Gallagher is the WORST professor I have ever had at Baylor. She is a horrible teacher, unkind, and makes the lab harder than it needs to be. She is boring and her powerpoint have nothing to do with the test. The suggested practice problems were a waste of time and the sapling was extremely harder than it needed to be. While she is really smart and understands the material herself, she is a horrible teacher and needs to stick to research. Dr. Hassel was more of a help than she was and he was not even teaching the course. She doesn't care about helping her students and her tests averages were below 70. Baylor policy requires professors have office hours according to the class hours, but this lady only had 1 office hour. If you want to do well, go to SI if Hope is still the SI and just study if you don't have other big classes.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2416 - Avoid this professor at all costs. She was unaffected by the confusion and failure of the majority of the class. Before the second exam, I approached her and told her I was beyond lost in the sea of information and was certain I was going to fail the exam. She relied by saying "and?" The online homework was impossible and unrelated to the lecture. She did not teach for the exam, she only gave us formulas but most of the material on the exams was about the significance of the material. Before one exam, I went to her office hour and asked what to study. She told me 3 things that were to be on the exam. None of those things were on the exam. The average grade for the final exam was a 55% and an A in the class was a 93%. Getting a good grade was nearly unobtainable. Avoid. This. Class. And Professor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2416 - This course is absolutely the worst. The content is just difficult and no matter who teaches it, it is going to be a struggle. It's just one of those classes. I had Dr. Gallagher the first year she taught it and honestly, she could have been worse. Dr. Gallagher is super nice. Whenever her reserved office hours don’t work, she will always try to accommodate to your availability. Even if she knows that you’re a slacker in her class and you never pay attention, she treats you with the same respect she gives to the smartest person in the class. Her grading is a bit controversial. Her class consists of 50% lecture – homework, 2 group assignments, 3 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 final, and 50% lab – 1 syllabus quiz, 7 pre-labs, 7 lab reports. Essentially if you bomb lecture but do extremely well in lab, you can pass with a B or a C. The second quiz we took everyone bombed, so she gave us the opportunity to take the same exact quiz home but graded it as the average between the two quizzes (since the class was so hard, I was hoping she would just replace it). For the second test, the average was in the 60’s and she refused to curve it because someone made an A on it. Lab is tedious but not difficult. If you can kiss up to your TA and you can figure out how your TA grades, you can make A’s and B’s on your lab reports which will bring up your grade tremendously. The first A I got on a lab report, I literally copied and pasted phrases from it and just changed numbers around for my future reports. If you want to excel in this class, reading the textbook is just as tedious but once you get past that, it can be really helpful. The lecture kind of sucks and literally no one pays attention. So find a study partner, because you’ll need it. Also…KNOW YOUR SIG FIGS  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:CHE 2416 - This professor is very approachable and clearly cares about her students. She's cheesy at times with her jokes, but that's just part of her friendly personality. She always comes into class with a cheerful attitude, is respectful, and encourages students to come to her office hours. Although her office hours are not very flexible (on the syllabus, she only has one office hour per week), she posts more office hours as exam day approaches. She also encourages students to email her if they have any questions and is willing to set up one-on-one office hours if you seek her out. She gives a semester long extra credit assignment (a video) for students to do if they wish. Not to be deceived by the name of this course, Laboratory Measurements and Techniques, this is analytical chemistry and is no easy class. I feel a lot of students bash on this professor because the material was tough, but the fact of the matter is, if you are willing to study, like any other class, you will succeed. There was a point in this semester (or several), I was sure I was failing this course but only because I always waited for the day before the exams to study... still, I ended up with a C+, because half of the grade came from the class grade and the other half came from the lab. Overall, this professor really cares about you and wants you to succeed. I think her teaching style (asking the students to discuss what's on the board) and what she says in class is helpful if students come to class prepared; that is, if they go over the PowerPoints she posts before she discusses them in class and if they take good notes over what she says and writes on the board. Having a solid understanding of Gen Chem II will definitely help you in this class. The point of it all: Read the PowerPoints as she posts them. Go to her office hours. Seek assistance from the TA's on the lab reports since they're the ones that grade them (don't leave these for the last minute). Do the practice problems she posts on the PowerPoints (as for the ones you don't understand, ask her for help). And study, study, study. Yes, this is a pretty large workload, but it is manageable. Honestly, just take things little by little and you'll be fine as long as you DON'T SLACK OFF. The TA's will give you extra credit opportunities and so will she. I don't know how some people can bash on this professor like the class being difficult was her fault... the subject is challenging, but if you don't seek assistance or come prepared to class, she can only do so much.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:CHE 2416 - Dr. Gallagher is a new professor and right now the only option for A-Chem, so you are stuck with her if you have to take this course. She is not a good lecturer, and often repeats many concepts over again multiple times, while leaving out other important things that you need to know. We spend half the class "discussing things with our neighbor" which really just means sitting there until she decides to start talking again. Her lectures are all over the place, and do not give you any glimpse into how difficult the exams will be. They are all free response math and concept questions, and are harder than anything in the book (yet she tells you that if you know the book you will do well), and she never curves the exams. She gives you very short windows to complete the online homework, and takes a very long time to grade quizzes and exams. When asking her questions about tests or exams, she answers in a way that is like saying "it is just wrong because it is wrong," which means she is no help at all. In addition to the class, the lab is a nightmare. The TA's grade the labs, which means whichever TA you get can determine your fate in this class. Some grade fair, while some are evil graders. The lab reports are long and tedious, so prepare for that. She did give us a small curve at the end of the course which was nice.  - Grade In Class:B+
