Comments:2310 - Loved the structure of Father Kanary’s class. There are no in-class assignments, you simply form the desks into one big circle and discuss the material as a class the entire time. For homework, which is 25% of your grade, you are assigned readings before every class, whether they be a set of chapters from a full-length book, or a passage from the textbook. One class, you show him your annotations when you get to class. The other class, you submit a 250-300 word reading response where you ask and answer a question you have about the reading. There are no other quizzes or tests, just an easy midterm that asks basic questions about the assigned readings to make sure you read them. The final is worth 50% of your grade, with 25% being a 1500 word interpretive essay where you make an insightful argument about any assigned reading of your choice. I never really consulted him while writing it, but we had a helpful peer review class session before it was due. He gives feedback on nearly every reading response he can, which definitely helped improve my writing before the final essay. The other 25% of the final was a series of take-home essay prompts, where you wrote about 600 words each on 3 different prompts. The reading can be a lot to keep up with, but doing so helps keep the discussion lively and only makes the eventual midterm, final, and essay a lot easier.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - Father Kanary is a pretty solid prof. here, you will be expected to talk in class and keep up with the readings, but as long as you do not fall behind on his weekly assignments it is an easy A. His office hours turned out to be kind of awkward, he's really shy but if you go he'll grade your assignments and exams nicer. He LOVES his job which helps a lot for the student. Overall, I'd take him again, but I would say the class requires like medium effort. DO NOT fall behind he will not give you points back, like at all.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2304 - Father Kanary (he's an ordained minister, hence 'Father')is by far one of my favorite Baylor professors I have had in my two years here. The reading responses, due twice a week, will definitely influence how well you do in the class; you get what you put into it. The reading is a lot to handle, but all of it helps you learn more about the material. 2304 (American Lit) was very discussion-based, which was helpful to gain other perspectives and learn new ideas. However, they are only interesting if you've done the readings. The midterm/final were also easy and didn't require studying if you keep up. The essays, which are a big chunk of your grade, are graded pretty tough but he always gives feedback on how to improve. Father Kanary's class was not an easy A but a very interesting class if you're willing to put in the time. As a person, Father Kanary cares about his students and asks for feedback on how well the class likes the format, and is open to change. He's a tough grader, but also the most encouraging professor I've had. Multiple fellow students had already fulfilled their English requirement but took 2304 to be taught by Father Kanary again.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ENG 1304 - Prof Kanary seemed like nice guy with a well organized class for the first few weeks, but there a few glaring problems with his teaching. 1) his workload is INSANE. He expects 2-3 pages of writing AT LEAST for every class period. 2) he is very set on what he wants to see and does not offer much room for creativity or inventive thinking. He wants to see things written his way. 3) he is extremely nit-picky with every assignment, and in several instances was not clear at explaining certain prompt points, making it hard to understand what he wanted to see in the paper. I had a high B all semester but almost dropped into the C range at the end due to his lack of communication and clarity.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - Mr. Kanary is an outstanding teacher. He is thoughtful and promotes discussion among the students. He chooses interesting articles for the class to read that are relevant to college students. He assigns daily work that is manageable-light reading and writing just a paragraph. He wants you to become a better writer and thinker so he is going to be tough on grading your papers, but he explains very clearly what your mistakes are and how to fix them. You will have to work hard for an A on essays-which comprise most of your final grade-but he will read over your rough draft if you take it to him in office hours and help you improve it significantly. Definitely take him for your english requirement; you will grow as a person!  - Grade In Class:A
