Comments:PSC 1387 - Very nice and endearing professor. He is a subject matter expert and is happy to answer questions from students. There are many opportunities for extra credit. The tests are difficult, but it's because he wants students to learn the materially thoroughly.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 1387 - Super great lecturer! Wow. I honestly didn't think I'd like this class since I only took it because it is a Baylor requirement, but Professor Ashbach has really changed my whole perspective on the subject! He does a great job of engaging students/checking for questions/re-stating things people didn't understand and not just lecturing non-stop during class. His class is a bit hard since the only grades are from the 3 exams (15%, 25%, 30%) respectively and discussion boards (30%). My biggest thing I can recommend is going to his office hours!!! He breaks down the topics and will literally go over it again and again as many times as students need it to make sure it is clear and that the material sticks. Secondly, use his study guides because I pretty much went off that and was really well prepared for his exams. Nothing that is not on the study guide will show up on the exams so rest assured :) Also, he does give extra credit! Great professor and I really hope Baylor keeps him on because he really is passionate about what he teaches and it great at it too!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 1387 - Ashbach is a very doable professor for political science. His lectures are a little boring if you don't like the topics but they are EXTREMELY helpful. He numbers note at the bottom of each slide and honestly, if you memorize EVERY SINGLE number on all slides you will get 100% on all the exams. There are 3 exams total (2 midterms and a final) with 10 discussion posts. He also has a movie night for extra credit that raised my grade up 4% and was the whole reason I got an A. Also, recommend going to his office hours because he explains things a lot more straightforward than in class. Funny and patient guy who makes this required class a little more bearable than other professors do.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - Dr. Ashbach was great! His lectures were engaging and everything in his exams came off of the PowerPoints. I would recommend putting your PowerPoint notes in one Word Doc for each exam, that helped me a lot with studying. I literally memorized word-for-word what each court case decision said because Dr. Ashbach's exams can be worded confusingly. Other than that the discussion posts due once a week were easy 100's and he offers extra credit if you attend the movie showing of Lincoln that he outs on during the semester.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - TAKE PROFESSOR ASHBACH!!! We had good extra credit opportunities and he is literally the nicest man in the world. We did a discussion post every week based on the reading and that was easy. His lectures were straightforward and so were the tests. He is very helpful during office hours, especially the ones he held before the exams.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - TAKE THIS MAN AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT he's a fantastic teacher and a great dude. If you sufficiently study for the exams and pay attention in class you'll probably get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - TAKE HIM!! He's literally the best! He is unbiased, which in my opinion you don't get anywhere anymore so it was so nice to have a teacher that is open to hearing all opinions. He is super helpful and passionate about what he is teaching!! The tests are pretty hard but he gives a helpful study guide and is super helpful during office hours!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1387 - TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! He is so engaging and passionate and makes class super interesting. His tests are difficult but if you study and go to his office hours you can get an A fairly easily! He is so willing to help and wants all of his students to succeed. I have yet to find a professor who is as unbiased as him, which is impressive considering this is a class on politics. He always welcomes pushback and does not force his own opinions on you. THE BEST!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 1387 - If you're dreading poly sci then take Prof Ashbach's class! All you need to get a good grade is a good memory. There are 3 exams and a discussion post each week. The discussion posts are completion grade and the tests are straight from the bullet points in his power points. He is always available to explain things during office hours and offers extra credit that is a good grade booster. Lastly, I never even opened my textbook and still made an A in the class. Take Ashbach!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - If you are good at memorizing, this class is for you. Professor Ashbach is an extremely smart guy and definitely knows his stuff. I was in his online section so I don’t know how he was in the classroom but he gave good biweekly videos. 70% of your grade comes from tests (15% for the first, 25% for the second, and 30% for the final- all noncumulative). 30% of your grade comes from weekly discussion boards. He also offers an extra credit movie each semester. While the tests do cover a lot of information, if you go to his zoom office hours he will walk you through everything you need to know. If you’re good at memorizing facts and court cases this class shouldn’t be hard. Most poli sci professors will make you buy an expensive book or take weekly quizzes but those won’t be concerns in this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - One of the best professors I have ever taken. He truly cares about his students and will make sure you understand the material. His class has almost no homework at all and the exams are very reasonable and all based on content, so no strict memorization.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - Dr. Ashbach is one of the best professors I have had at Baylor! He truly cares about his students and wants you to succeed in his class. When I took his class, he had about 400 students total and the in-person section was held in Waco Hall. Somehow Dr. Ashbach still managed to learn the names of his students and engage with them in lecture. Office hours are very important before exams! Even if you don't have any questions, you can still go just to listen to the conversation. I found that a lot of the things he said during office hours showed up word for word on his exams.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 1387 - PSC 1387- Political Science for Non-Majors: TAKE PROFESSOR ASHBACH!! He is actually one of the kindest professors I have ever had. He is always available to talk to about material or even just to chat. Genuinely cares about your success in the course and also success in life! Just make sure to take good notes and DO the study guides. The tests ( 2 midterms and a final) coincide really well with the powerpoints he provides. No homework, just a discussion response (100 words) due every week- super easy!! Plus he offers extra credit that is worth 3% of your time overall grade. I recommend that everyone take him!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1387 - I'm an international student. I have zero interest in politics and zero interest in this class, and I have to say, it was very difficult for me to stay engaged with all this talk about the Constitution at first. However, I absolutely loved having Dr. Ashbach as my professor, though I still have no interest in polisci at all. His exams aren't extremely easy - you do need to spend some time studying and actually understanding what things mean or imply. You're only graded on discussion and exams, and there's only 3 exams throughout the semester, none of them are cumulative. Two short midterms and one final at the end. He also gives extra credit (all you need to do is watch a movie and a discussion and email him that you did it). So in the end, everything is super straightforward, no trick questions, no homework or essays, and even the readings I got away with never doing (I'm sorry Dr. Ashbach). All you need to succeed in this class is 1.) Pay attention to his lecture 2.) Take notes on his powerpoint AND his lecture 3.) Ask him to clarify anything. He's very much available and loves to talk to students - one of the most pleasant professors I've met so far. I hate political science, but I can honestly say I enjoyed this class because how great Dr. Ashbach was.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2302 - I have never taken Polisci before and thought I had no interest in it, however, Professor Aschbach proved me wrong. He's a great lecturer and his exams are all multiple choice, though last semester he gave us an optional essay choice for people who felt they did bad on the multiple choice. Just memorize the main key points from each case study and you'll be fine! I had him in a 90 person class, so his office hours are really full most of the time. Other than that, it was so nice being in his class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 1387 - Second lecture of the semester stated that the founders "obviously meant everyone is equal" when they wrote "All men are created equal". This is a political science class. It took an additional 144 years for women to get the right to vote and 184 years for black Americans to be able to exercise their right to vote. It leaves a very bad impression to begin the semester by acting as if freedom and equality for ALL Americans was always the intention of the founders. I had no intention of taking a historical revisionist course, but that seems to be the message thus far. In 2020, it feels impossible, and borderline ignorant to pretend and teach that the founders intended to grant equal protections to everyone. Take this class if you want a sanitized, glorified version of American political history I guess.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach's class is very interesting. Remember to take a good note during the class, and use the study guide to review for the tests. He only has two tests which are midterm and final. Also, he does not have homework; instead, he only has 4 discussions and 2% extra credit. Take him if you want an A in PSC! He is the best teacher !!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 2302 - Professor Ashbach is so awesome. Very professional while also caring and understanding. Poly Sci is not easy but he makes it very understandable and fun. There are two test in his class, each 35 percent of your grade, Attendance is 10 percent so don't skip, and discussions are like homework 20 percent and a guaranteed 100 on that. He does a great job of breaking down each case we learn and even tells us certain points to star so we know whats on the test. I took him the first year he did MC choice test and I would say it was very very fair. I didn't study that hard because I thought I was going to pass fail the class due to the COVID. I would recommend him to anyone! Such a great guy! He also is very helpful, whether that be emails or office hours. He is there to help you!. I remember he offered alternate test times, which was very nice of him because of the outbreak. You will learn so much if you take him and have fun while doing it. He ends each class with saying either Strength and Honor or Go Forth and Conquer. He is just super duper!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:2302 - Overall great guy, almost no homework. Very excited to help his students in any way he can. Exams are very difficult, but if you meet with him outside of class beforehand to go over your study guide he'll point out what you need to know so I recommend doing that  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach was probably my favorite professor from last semester. You can tell he is enthusiastic about teaching students and the subject which makes his lectures engaging. He is lecture heavy, but he does a good job of highlighting what is important for you to study and what isn't. The only workload is the five discussion boards and the two tests, but he also offer study guides for tests and an extra credit movie opportunity each semester. Personally, I think in the past semester he's always been good at answering any questions you have and being adaptable with students; i.e., offering written or multiple choice tests based on your testing preference. Since this is a required course, absolutely take Ashbach!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Political Science - Professor Ashback is great, one of the easiest professors you'll get for such a boring topic. The class is lecture heavy but he always sums up each topic with bullet points at the end. There's only a midterm and final in the class and occasional discussion board questions so the workload is pretty light. He always gives out a study guide before the tests and the questions are just straight off of that. Great guy very engaging.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2302 - He's very nice, has a great attitude every single day. In fact he's one of the only professors I've had who actually looks and acts like they enjoy their job at Baylor. However, I disliked the way he structured the course. It was heavily based on lectures. There were no assignments at all whatsoever except for a discussion every other week. The only other grades received were for the midterm and the final exam. Pro of this was that there was barley any work to do during the semester except read, but the con was that you were on your own to figure things out and understand the material. I was pretty confident going into the first exam because I had read everything and felt like I had a pretty good understanding. However, I went into the exam and the test was structured for failure. It was multiple choice. Almost every single option for answers for each question looked the same, he just jumbled the words slightly on each. It was extremely confusing because they all seemed like the right answer. I ended up guessing on most and ended up failing miserably. Considering that was a large portion of my grade, I was basically screwed the rest of the semester and had no hope of regaining my grade. He did offer a makeup exam which was nice and helped bump my grade slightly, however I'm not sure that's relevant for all his classes because my class was especially large and so that is why he changed the exam formatting. Not much guidance is provided to prepare for exams but otherwise he is knowledgeable and enjoys his job.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:PSC 1387 - I would explain every reason why you should take this class with Ashbach seeing as it's a university graduation requirement, but everyone else has pretty much said all you need to know. Whether you're a PoliSci major or know nothing about the course material yet, you can get an A in this class if you study for just 30-45 minutes each week. Seriously, that's it. The best part? You'll still retain the information-- not just put it in short-term memory for the test only to forget it afterwards. Do yourself a favor and click add class next to Ashbach.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach is super sweet, he is always there to help and is willing to work with so that you succeed. The class is made up of a few discussion boards, a midterm, and the Final so that is where it can get tough but if you study hard and go see him you will do great.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-24

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach made the material very interesting and relevant. I found myself in his office more than I thought I would be to talk about the subject and get a better understanding of the real world application. He is always very insightful and very helpful with the material. He also does a great job of preparing his students for the exams.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach is the type of teach to lecture, which I enjoyed. So if you don't like lecturing, this guy may not be it for you. He only does two tests, the midterm and final. The reviews for these consist of about 20 questions we should have learned throughout the semester and he picks 5 of them for the test. The answers are only supposed to be five sentences. Because of how he does test, I didn't make the best grades, mainly my fault because I didn't study the right way. Instead of quizzes, he does a discussion post on canvas every week there isn't a test which should consist of you writing a 100-word discussion and responding to two other people's discussions in 100 words. Overall, he is a good professor and I'd take him again.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2302 - Professor Ashbach is such a funny and nerdy guy. He is so passionate about the Constitution. This class is different than other polisci classes, the only textbook we need is The Federalist by Alexander Hamilton. Yes, the class can be pretty boring at times. We show up, take turns volunteering to read a portion out loud, and he writes on the board. We have one midterm, which he posts all possible questions online beforehand and you just need to prepare to answer all of them in which he selects five (5). The final will be the same format. He also offers an extra credit opportunity to go watch a movie and then he talked about it for ten minutes after, the movie was called Pleasantville and it was so funny. By attending, he took our overall grade up by 2% total. Also, each attendance that is not approved beforehand takes 1% off of your grade. Overall, I am pleased with him. He brings chocolate to class on Fridays. He says "good morning all," at 2:30 in the afternoon and always tells us to go forth and conquer. I love this man.   - Grade In Class:B+
