Comments:LAT 1301 - Y'all. I kid you not, this class was brought up at almost every therapy session. Dr. Jones is super nice and means well, but she really can't teach. There was no review. None. She gave us new information right up to the final exam. You need to memorize literally everything. Jones is an easy grader and gives partial credit, but I cannot stress enough how anxiety-inducing her class was. She'd randomly pick people to translate from a paragraph, and if you couldn't do it, there was awkward silence for at least a minute. Jones stopped grading homework after the third week, but kept pumping out assignments. Do yourself a favor and learn a language that's actually still alive.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:LAT 1301 - DO NOT EVER TAKE DR JONES FOR LATIN 1!!!!! She attempts to go through a PowerPoint of a full chapter of Wheelocks Latin in about 15 minutes, and doesn't really teach it well. She gives 2 quizzes per week, one vocab and one grammar. She teaches things that other professors don't, and while most if not all Latin professors use the MLE, or Midyear Latin Exam, for their final exam and make it departmental, she writes her own final. I considered dropping her class because of how hard it is  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1301 - Any 1301 Latin class is going to be a lot of work and memorization, that's just the nature of the class, so be prepared. There are two quizzes per week, one vocab and one grammar and most of class is spent going over the homework in an unhelpful manner. The tests are pretty difficult, but the main reason to avoid Jones is her lack of teaching ability. Sure she's nice and all, but its very difficult to understand what you are supposed to be doing. She's not very engaging and she does not make it clear what is going on, to the point that I didn't understand declensions until late into the semester.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - The thing about this class is that you REALLY have to study or you'll fall behind. I highly recommend if you want to get a basic done, do not take her, she's more for the classics majors. The workload is fairly easy, but the grammar quizzes every week are unbearable, however they are prepping you for the test, so really really study and prep. She isn't bad but she isn't good either. Good luck & get a tutor, it's the only way I passed this class.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1301 - People are being really hard on her for the upper level classes, but 1301 has not been very difficult. Prof. Jones is a sweet younger woman who knows what she’s talking about. The homework is basically after every class, but it is always the same format of translating some sentences. It is not difficult and there are no other assignments. She also does not even grade them by what you got wrong, just that you turned it in. She is a good teacher and posts everything you need in advance. She is not condescending or rude if you get something wrong, and she’s really good at giving credit for partially correct answers. She goes over exactly what the tests look like. No need to memorize accent marks for this level. You’ll do just fine taking her class, at least for the Latin I course.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 - Honestly just memorize everything. If you got through Latin 1 and 2, you can do this without trying to figure things out too much. Just look for patterns and memorize the reasoning for parsing and you will be okay. It is a lot of writing though.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1302 - I was embarrassed to even step foot into lecture. Despite taking Latin in both middle and high school, I still struggled in this class. If you ask a question during lecture be prepared to be asked a question back, rather than receiving instruction or help. The beginning of the class began with a timed quiz... not any timed quiz but an unnecessarily hard one which was over material yet to be covered in class. The pattern of the class was: you go home teach yourself, come in and take a quiz, then finally after completing the quiz she would cover the material you just quizzed over. I understand assigning vocab and not covering it before a quiz, but grammar? In addition to all of that, the quizzes were formatted in a way that was confusing as is. I had to drop the course in order to avoid failing as well as having to remove my Latin minor. There are so many other professors who are eager to answer your questions and see you succeed.   - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1301 - I have had a lot of experience with Latin, however, day one we immediately were thrown in the fire, having to memorize and learn an incredible amount. Despite this being a year 1 beginner Latin class. Additionally, we have an incredible amount of homework, and a quiz at the beginning of every class. These quizzes are not easy either, the vocab quizzes are usually out of around 20 points, while the grammar quizzes are worth around 60-70. She drops 2 vocab quizzes and 1 grammar quiz, but this is still not enough. Our classes consist of 60 mins of reviewing the homework, then around 10-15 minutes of teaching us an entirely new chapter, that we need to know perfectly for the next class since we will have a quiz. She offers office hours and always tells the class to go see her during her office hours to get a better understanding of the language, but this is because our classes are mostly spent reviewing the homework, instead of making sure the students understand the material.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1301 - Be prepared to teach yourself and never get your questions answered. I spend way more time doing homework and studying for this class than my upper-level bio and chem classes. I came in wanting to learn a different language, instead, I got a teacher who blames the difficulty of the class on the class schedule and the fact "that we signed up for it". She's nice to your face, but your grades--well, good luck charlie   - Grade In Class:C
