*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:PHI 1301 - I had no interest in philosophy and only took this class for credit. However, I learned so much in this class about my faith. Dr. Garcia does not do any of the grading. He only teaches, and I think he creates the quizzes and exams. His TAs grade, and they are pretty lenient as long as you answer the question. We had impromptu in-class quizzes sometimes, which was not really my jam. We also had pre-class quizzes on Canvas, which I thought were excessive. We literally had 16 quizzes on 16 chapters during one week, and I do not even think we got into the details of the book. I liked that he always shuffled us into groups almost every class and encouraged group discussion. My only issue with the class is that it is so reading-intensive. I had harder STEM classes, and this class took up my time with all the reading we had to do. But do not let that scare you away. I realized I had to start reading ahead so I could be prepared for class and also review what I read right before class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHI 1301 05 - I came into Baylor HATING philosophy, but after taking this class I added philosophy to my degree plan. Dr. Garcia is a well-informed, passionate person who clearly wants to share that passion with his students. The class isn't super difficult, but it definitely makes you think about big problems. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHI 1301 - Dr. Garcia is a good professor. He is personable and intelligent. I took his C.S. Lewis class. The readings are very sporadic in length. Sometimes the reading is 6 pages and sometimes it is half of Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Honestly you can get by in the course if you do not read all the books, but you would miss out on some really great writings. Attendance is important, because the things that he emphasizes in class are what we are tested on. Take good notes and pay attention. The tests were half in class essay and half multiple choice from home. There were in class quizzes most days that either asked a question from the reading or from the previous class. Occasionally even something from that class period. He teaches mostly from power points and utilizes group discussions to get students thinking. There is a fun field trip that we took to the art museum. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Phi 1301 - He encouraged the class to have great conversations, and the conversations were great. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:PHI1301 - Professor Garcia is engaging with students and good at handling deep and tough questions. One of the biggest activities in class is group discussion which makes the class fun and makes it easy to get to know classmates. The environment is really casual and Garcia invites discussion between students and himself. I'm usually excited to go to class because it feels very casual and the discussion is always engaging. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Garcia is a great professor. His teaching style is engaging, though sometimes he can go on tangents. Our class is pretty discussion-based, and he allows time and flexibility in the schedule to answer questions and clear up confusion. We only read a few books in this class, but sometimes up to half of the book was assigned for reading in one night. But the readings aren't intense, and they can go by quickly. I can say that I have learned so much in this class. This class has encouraged me to ask deeper questions and think more deeply. Dr. Garcia is overall a great professor, and I wish I could take a class like this again! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHL 1301 - i found this class super enjoyable, it was a typical literature-based class with a few chapters of reading due every time. there were a few quizzes that were super easy if you had done the readings. He is super receptive to what the class wanted to talk about and lectured on what I found to be interesting topics. A lot of it was discussion-based so be prepared to talk in class. the grades were open-note take home exams and in-class essays for a midterm and final. I would recommend this class to a friend, I feel like I will remember a lot from what we talked about in this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHI 1301 - I took the Philosophy of C.S. Lewis course, and it was really interesting! Dr. Garcia is so nice and friendly. Super easy class. Only thing I'd change is that you can't see your grades on Canvas, but if you ask for them you can see them. The first half of the semester is maybe like 6 pages of homework a night with some reading quizzes, and the second half is maybe like 12 ish pages of a book with less reading quizzes. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHI1301 - Dr Garcia is a funny man with a golden heart. He is engaging in class and truly loves the material he is covering. After having taught the class for years, he has a mastery over the material and will gladly answer and discuss any question you have for him. His grades are generous and the workload is light; you don't have to do much other than read CS Lewis, which I already enjoyed doing anyway. I recommend this class to anyone who has room in their schedule or needs an elective credit that this class can fill. Seriously, take this class and take it with Garcia - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - This class was so fun and informative! I came in with many questions about Christianity, theology, and Christian philosophy, and walked away with a lot of answers, along with further questions spurred on by this course. Dr. Garcia genuinely wants to help you succeed. It is difficult to reach Dr. Garcia sometimes, but the best time to reach him is after class. Also, his TAs grade your work, which can be frustrating, but she is generally gracious with the grading. Participation is a big thing in class, so make sure you are contributing to class discussion and attend all the classes as much as you can. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I’m going to be so honest here. Yes, I got an A, but when I tell you I hated this class with every fiber of my being… Dr. Garcia cares about his topics, however if you’re looking to take a fun course in C.S. Lewis, like I was, don’t take this class. The course requires a ton of reading and if you buy your books, you’re in for 100s of dollars worth of books which is why I just used PDFs. I love school but this class made me genuinely start to fall asleep every time. Your work is not graded by Garcia but is graded by his TAs who will ALWAYS grade your work up to ONLY 95 and not 100. They are hard to get in contact with (which is why the availability is so bad) and they will not provide you feedback on your work either which will leave you annoyed based on the subjective grading structure. I just don’t get how you can do everything according to the outline and more, while still not getting full marks. They will make you feel inferior. While Dr. Garcia may be very nice, he didn’t even show up to our final class. All in all, this class is not worth the 60,000 a year you pay for. Go find a class that makes you want to learn instead of fall asleep. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - Dr. Garcia is such a wholesome professor. you can tell he cares a lot about what he is teaching which makes it more enjoyable. He really wants students to engage in class discussion. There really isnt that much homework in this class-- just a couple writing projects toward the end. However, most revolve around your own personal thoughts. Sometimes the class can feel long, because its on a block in the afternoon, but some of the topics were so intriguing I would continue the conversation with my roommates at home. The TA's grade everything and if you have a question, you have to go through them first. It's almost impossible to get 100 on the assignments but it has pushed me to write better - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PHI 4321 - Dr. Garcia is easily one of my favorite professors at Baylor. I took his Metaphysics class this fall and I was pretty nervous about the difficulty of the class, however, it became my favorite class of the semester. The readings he assigns are super accessible and make difficult topics easy to grasp. Although the content wasn't the easiest to understand at times, Dr. Garcia explained everything very well and was always open to answering any questions we had. At the beginning of the class, there were open note/open book quizzes, but eventually, he stopped assigning them. We also had structured discussions in class where we would craft an argument on a topic and present it in class. Although I was nervous about the structured discussions at first, they ended up being super helpful and helped me pinpoint a topic I wanted to write on for the final. The final was a final essay on any aspect of metaphysics discussed in class. He is also super fun! He relates to his students well and during our class challenged a student to drink a gallon of milk in five minutes. Class was dismissed early that day and we watched a student successfully finish the milk. I highly recommend Dr. Garcia for any class you get the chance to take with him! He is the best! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHI 1301 - I took Dr. Garcia's Philosophy of C.S. Lewis class this semester. I do not think that his lectures are "boring", however, the time of the class (2:30-3:45) could sometimes affect my attention, as I usually get tired around this time. This is not Dr. Garcia's fault. His lectures are engaging and interesting, and desires for his students to participate in active discussion of the topic. While the reading is heavy, if you are interested in knowing C.S. Lewis's philosophy within his works, it is incredibly enjoyable and Dr. Garcia provides not only a history of his life through a wonderful book, but also explores why he thinks what Lewis states in his books. There are reading quizzes that you have to be careful on, but if you do the reading you will be perfectly fine. The reading is actually enjoyable that you have to do reading quizzes on (especially the Copan book). At the end of the semester, you are hit with a larger workload (consisting of multiple class "write-downs", an analysis that combines multiple C.S. Lewis readings, and a comprehensive final that is in the form of 2 essays using a blue book. Make sure to participate in class conversation and don't be afraid to raise your hand, as Dr. Garcia is warm and inviting of student's opinions and contributions. I am blessed to be in this class despite some hardships, and please give Dr. Garcia's class a chance if you can handle extra workload for a 1301 class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4321 - Dr Garcia is hilarious, made metaphysics fun and he always made an effort to make difficult topics clear - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - he is so so so boring. I honestly would have to chew gum to keep me awake every class. I took his CS lewis class bc i love CS lewis, but this mans almost ruined it for me. interesting topic, boring teaching style. and his TA's grade ur stuff and they are ANAL abt everything - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PHI 1301 - I didn't feel too much regarding this class, it is a boring pre-requisite. Dr Garcia is very average. His lecturing style makes you want to fall asleep. Quizzes are rather difficult and the final is terrible. I think he is alright to take for one semester though. There might be better professors out there though. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:4321 - Dr. Garcia is a very avergae prof. His lectures are kind of boring and I hated taking the quizzes he had at the beginning of the semester. Saying all of this though, we only had a midterm inclass essay, which is based on any of the readings we did in class. I did really well on it , and it was my first upper level philosophy class (this was just my experience). His final is an at-home essay and was very doable. Although, a lot of his readings are based on Christianity which can be difficult for those who do not practice the religion. Regardless of his teaching style and reading choices, I think he is such a kind and caring professor. If you even just go to his office hours once, you will see this kindness within him. I really respect him and I wish him all the best in his career. He never seemed bored or rude and was always open to answering questions. He is very very very understanding! I would take him if you are a good critical reader and someone who does not rely too heavily on lecture based classes. (P.S. he also hands out reading outlines and if you reiterate the outline in your essays, you are in for a good grade). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Phil 1301 - I took this class with high hopes, as I enjoy CS Lewis and thought his philosophy would be interesting. I did not enjoy this class. Prof Garcia just talks dully and reads off his slides. The workload consists of a bunch of annoying quizzes on readings that you have to select the boxes that are correct. Sometimes you think he wants a specific answer, and only choose one box, but he wants a more general theme. The opposite can also be true. You kind of have to guess and hope you get it right. He also is not the fastest grader. If you want an ok A then sure take it, but you will be bored in the class and he will take off points for you being on your phone or computer. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1301 - I loved this class. It was definitely my favorite class this semester. I learned so much I never knew that I could learn. Dr. Garcia was very insightful in all of his lectures and always answered any questions we had. The workload was not too bad. It is, however, a reading and writing intensive course, so that is something to consider. The readings are really interesting though. This class really helped me understand why I believe the things I do and to think deeply about my beliefs. I highly encourage and recommend anyone to take this course. You will not be disappointed! - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:PHIL 1301 - I had Dr. Garcia for my honors first year seminar, and he is a really fun prof. Really easy to understand and he always answers any questions with clarity. He told us anecdotes at the beginning of every class and we had really good discussions in this class. Workload isn't too bad, writing every week but doable. He's new to Baylor this semester (fall 2020) but really loves his students and his subject! Definitely would recommend him. - Grade In Class:A
