Comments:1366 - Dr.Johnson is a wonderful professor. I have learned more in his history class than any other in my lifetime. While it is true that the class is primarily focused on racial inequalities throughout U.S. history, these were also real things that happened within the country and a major part of our history! Part of Dr.Johnson's area of specialization is African American history, so I would not recommend you take this course if that is a topic you find unsettling. This class is heavily lecture and handwritten note based. I believe there are 5-6 total essay exams where the week prior he gives 3 different prompts for you to prepare and one at random will be selected on the day of the exam. I found his exams to be very challenging!! No matter what angle I have taken to writing the essay, my grade did not reflect what I had hoped. You are able to submit your rough drafts early to the TA for some advice or meet with them during their office hours, I just never found myself in a position of having enough time to do so (which partially played into my grades). It is a large workload for a gen-ed course, but if you are a history buff and confident in you writing/analyzation abilities you will do well!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:I don't remember the name - Okay Professor Johnson was incredible. I left his classes MULTIPLE TIMES WITH TEARS IN MY EYES because this guy can DELIVER a speech. He is incredibly passionate, loves his students, loves the Lord, and really cares. I went through a rough situation and he was understanding and helped me ensure I stayed current with my school work. He brings in other professors to shake up and add variety to his class, and provided extra credit that brought the whole class' grades up at the end of the semester. When you're in his class, he expects you to give it 100% He always gives 100% If you choose his class, know that he values respect and he respects YOU. The least you can do in return is respect him back and you will learn so much.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 Revolutions - I genuinely loved his class because he was enthusiastic, the lectures were easy to follow, and the work wasn't too bad. I do have to say that the amount of reading was a little bit of a hassle, especially since there were reading quizzes and I don't like reading. The TA's did the grading and so I recommend getting to know your TA and going to their study sessions. Also, email them drafts of your essays to get some feedback. The essays can seem like hard prompts, but I promise if you pay attention in lecture, you will get ideas from that. Also please do not skip the readings. You will need them for your essays.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2366 - This man single handily almost ruined my future career all because I missed class. I only missed 2 classes before this, I had COVID, I emailed him updates and sent him my positive test, and I had an A in the class. That is beside the point. He would constantly yell and curse in the class and said he treated us with respect but would proceed to kick students out of his class for no reason. A student checked his phone and he started screaming at him telling cursing at him and telling him to get out of his classroom. This student was in the back minding his own business. Additionally, the he sits in the front and teaches how the race was affected by white people. I am first generation here and expected to learn history, not a daily rant on how each race was oppressed. He also does not grade his own work, he gives the essays to the TA, the TA harshly grades them and then he sends us the grades. I went to him with my paper asking for an explanation and he read through the paper, said he disagreed with some of the comments the TA made, and then he proceeded to tell me there's nothing he can do about it. A few of us went to the head of the department and the head could care less about us. This is the worst class and the worst professor I have ever had at Baylor (and I'm a senior). Do not take any course with this man.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:HIS 2365 - Dr. Johnson is the single best professor I have had while at Baylor. First of all, Dr. Johnson commutes four hours to get to Baylor every day and it is because he is incredibly passionate about his work and his students. I want to make it clear that Dr. Johnson is not for all students. If you don't appreciate your perceptions being challenged, this class is not for you. Dr. Johnson truly cares about cutting through the crap of what we're taught and getting to the meat of the issues that we discuss. I looked forward to this class every day and I never wanted to miss one. Dr. Johnson is incredibly engaging and communicated his ideas very effectively. There were only four grades in the class; four written exams. A week before the exam, Dr. Johnson gave us three possible prompts and you were able to prepare however you wanted to. I usually wrote all three essays in full. The day it is due, the assignment opens on Canvas during class time and you have an hour and fifteen minutes to work on chosen essay prompt and submit it. I used this time to revise since I had already written all three. In my class, we had a TA who graded the essays. This was the one part of the class that was frustrating; it was a constantly moving target. I was the top performing student and I was still worried about getting an A in the class. There is no grade for class participation. Dr. Johnson is incredible and I HIGHLY recommend taking him if you get the chance. You will leave his class a more aware, considerate, and learned person.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4340 - Dr. Johnson is quite honestly the best professor I have ever had. I can't put into words what this class meant to me and the tough conversations on race that were excellently moderated by Johnson. My class and I all became the best of friends. This class was beyond eye opening and I recommend everyone take Dr. Johnson. I can't say enough good things about him!:)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - Ron Johnson is one of the worst professors I have ever had and more than likely I ever will have. He turns his history class into a class completely about race. He chooses to focus on historical events that suit his agenda in the class. He somehow is able to turn every single historical event into a time when white people were racist against a variety of people groups. From his standpoint, the only thing that mattered in his class was that white people were racist. He would constantly talk about how he wanted to have discussions about different opinions with his students, but every time he was introduced to a different opinion, he would shut it down in front of the entire class. He would quite literally say that you were stupid if you had a different opinion. He is extremely hypocritical and narrow minded yet prides himself on being open minded. He expresses that he deeply cares for his students, but he is the most uncaring professor I have ever had. He could honestly care less about you, especially if you have different opinions than him. When you write essays, you have to be very careful that you write only what he wants to hear. He holds certain students to unfair and higher standards, and then judges them based off those standards he’s not holding for the rest of the class. As for the essays you write, getting above a B is practically impossible. You can be an A student when it comes to essays in every other class, but likely not in this one. This hurts your grade because the class has no other assignments or exams except these essays. Overall, it’s a terrible class. I love history and was excited to learn more about America. All I got were lectures on race and why white people are racist no matter what. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It’s just not worth it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:HIS 2366 - There is no doubt that Dr. Johnson is passionate about his job. I found this to be refreshing, but honestly sometimes a little overwhelming. His style of teaching is very fast paced and enthusiastic, but I always struggled to type important dates and details before be moved onto the next topic. His TA graded exams, and she seemed to be a bit pretentious in her commentary. I pride myself on my writing ability, but struggled to figure out exactly what he was looking for on his essays, especially since he wasn't grading them himself. On the first day of class, I showed up in my military uniform, and I was treated differently from then on. I appreciated the respect he gave me, but I felt that he placed an unnecessary amount of pressure on myself and my ROTC peers just because of our service – he even went as far as contacting cadre to complain about a few absences from class. I would recommend that you (1) avoid this class if you are an ROTC student or want to be treated like an adult and (2) avoid this class if history is not a primary interest of yours. Dr. Johnson has good intentions, but this class just wasn't it for me.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Civil Rights Movement - The most formative course of college. Dr. Johnson cares about his students and clearly puts so much thought and effort into the course you will want to do well. I learned so much from this course and it gives you a skill set to be more discerning in future historical study. The classroom environment was the best I've experienced in college. You do not want to pass up the opportunity of having him a part of your college experience. It is a moderately difficult course but do not let that deter you. If you want to become a better student/person Dr. Johnson will help you do that.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2366 - I don't understand why everyone is praising this guy...he literally has his TA do all the grading, which I wouldn't mind if the papers weren't VERY difficult and weighed so heavily. I'm just warning you- he claims to want his students to succeed, but he really just likes to feel smart. He has insanely high expectations for his papers and gives much lower grades than he should. Then he claims that a high C or a low B is actually really good, and we should be proud for doing so well. If you want to become a professional writer and want to hone your writing skills in an intensive Professional/Rhetorical writing course, this is the class for you. If you want to learn history while maintaining a GPA, don't take his class. He won't give you an A, I don't know if its a pride thing or a sense of superiority, but you will not get a good grade here. These other reviews must be exceptions. He throws things around the room, punches the whiteboard out of anger, and kicks students out for checking their phone. Just stay away, please.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3371 - TAKE THIS CLASS! Or really anything taught by Dr. Johnson. I took Dr. Johnson's History of Black Americans course and have never felt so challenged in my development as a writer and person in general. One of the class requirements is participating in a graduate conference worth 50% of your grade, which was very daunting at first but ended up being a very fulfilling and educational experience. Don't let the conference deter you from taking this course. Dr. Johnson has very high expectations for his students and you definitely have to work for your A by participating in the readings and discussions, but he is always willing to work with you and set you up for success. The tests are just essay format, which was probably the worst part of the class due to how many prompts were given. I think we read about 5 books total, with the class ending a few weeks earlier than the end of the semester so that we could focus on writing our research papers. The content of the class is also incredibly important, and I would honestly recommend this course to any student due to how important and relevant the course material relates to the world today.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 2366 - The only reason I took this class was that I needed a history credit, and so I thought this was gonna be like high school, where we just read the textbook and get quizzed and tested over the chapters. I was very wrong as there were no assignments, quizzes, participation grades. You would think that would make me want to recommend this class, but I'm going to try and do the opposite in actuality. To start, Dr. Johnson has very good intentions and always cares for you as a student and a person. His class is entirely discussion-based, which many people might enjoy as we actually had some pretty good discussions. However, I will note that Dr. Johnson is EXTREMELY LIBERAL. I never felt comfortable or safe enough to express my actual ideas on certain topics because I was afraid of getting ridiculed in front of the whole class. If you spoke in class and said something liberal, he would applaud you and emphasize what you said. If you were to say something on the other side, he would make you feel stupid and regret what you just said. Often, I found myself biting my tongue because some ideas he was presenting to the class were heavily emotion-based. Some of my classmates, who were also either moderate or leaning right, told me how we all felt uneasy and afraid to speak out. Secondly, the class structure. There were only FOUR grades in the entire semester. Let me repeat that..... FOUR. Not only that, they were all essay exams. If you are not very good at writing, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Writing is definitely not one of my strong suits, so I did not do too well in this class. Not only that, but Dr. Johnson does not even grade the essays. A grad student does. The only times you are allowed to speak with him directly and go over your essay is through scheduling meetings which, by the way, are almost impossible due to the sheer amount of people who request them. I 100% should have dropped this class on the first day when we went over the syllabus, and I found out about the ONLY ESSAY exams. When I wrote these essays, I actually bs everything I was writing to make it sound more left-leaning as I was scared of getting points are taken off just because of differing political beliefs. To conclude, here is who I would recommend taking this class: - If you enjoy or are good at writing essays. - If you have a left-leaning political view or are right-leaning but can fake it pretty well. If these don't fit you, DO NOT take this class. I promise you to save the trouble and do not take this class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2366 - If you have the option to take his class I highly recommend it! Professor Johnson really cares about his students and that's obvious through his teaching. There is no homework and about 4 essays for the exams, but you can submit them to him beforehand to review. Lots of class discussion that is relevant to today, a very interesting class and participation in class in encouraged. You have to pay attention during class and take notes because he lectures the notes and doesn't provide anything else, however its not a hard class at all and one of my favorite professors  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - Dr. Johnson is a great professor and wonderful human being! If you genuinely want to learn about history and become a more well rounded human being, take his class. I loved learning from him and my perspective changed and broadened. He has no homework, but take really good notes. He has from 3-5 papers, 2 are on books you need to analyze. He has 3 prompts he gives out a week before for the test/paper, research, write, and submit it to him for feedback before the actual test. Talk to him, he really tries to help the student succeed. He has a very specific way of grading and he really wants you to think and pull out arguments from class notes and primary sources. So if you don't want to put in any work, his is not a class to take.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:HIS 2366 - I'm a senior and this is by far the best professor I've ever had — for any class. Dr. Johnson was relatively new to Baylor, but has a distinct gift for teaching, connecting with students and inspiring a thirst for knowledge in those who learn from him. I'm not a history major by any means, but Dr. Johnson made me eager to come to class and to learn more about topics that are foundational to our country and how I could be a better, more informed human. He is incredibly knowledgeable, charismatic and interested in your understanding rather than your performance. Don't get me wrong, the writing exams are rigorous and can be time-consuming to prepare for (he'll usually give you three prompts to write essays on and give you a week or so to write them so you can copy/paste the chosen prompt's essay on the day of the exam), but I was truly challenged and refined in my writing and argument skills (and I'm a Journalism major). This man cares DEEPLY for his students. He wants to see you succeed and will be fair to you, above all else. Take his class — you will come out of it a more well-rounded, compassionate, wide-eyed and educated version of yourself and you will be thankful for it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2366 - This was his first year at Baylor, and I can't say enough good things about him. He made the class so interesting and is so energetic! He cares so much about his students' success and is so willing to help. I was dreading taking history because I thought it would be boring, but Prof. Johnson made it fun and engaging. TAKE HIM!!!   - Grade In Class:A
