Comments:3331 & 3332 - BEST OCHEM PROFESSOR EVER!! I took Dr. Plunk for both Ochem 1 and 2 and it was a super fun class. I really enjoyed the flipped fridays. He gave 6 quizzes (1 was a pop quiz, 1 was a partner quiz, 1 was a planned in class quiz, 3 were take-home quizzes but these were much harder than the in class ones). All the exams were on a monday so I would genuinely just cancel everything that weekend and just study 8am-10pm saturday and sunday before the exams. I procrastinated a ton but honestly doing the homework during the week instead of on the weekend when it was due was a GAME CHANGER. First semester I rarely went to office hours and when I did it was exclusively to pick up an exam and leave as quickly as possible. Second semester I started doing the homework as we learned the material and when I had questions I could actually go to office hours and ask them which is a wild concept I know but it truly did change the game for ochem and I definitely think you need to do the homework's early for ochem 2. Ochem 1 I got through with an A while procrastinating but I think it would have been a lot less stressful had I actually done the homework ahead of time. I would suggest downloading a free pdf of Klein's Ochem as a second language textbook (semester 1 and semester 2). I exclusively used these to learn the material before exams. When I talked above about my sat/sun crunch learning this is what I mean. I would just go page-by-page doing all the problems and learning all the material and it makes ochem super easy to understand. I cannot recommend this book enough. Overall, Dr. Plunk is an amazing professor, he is actually human and is super nice in office hours and he genuinely cares and is passionate about ochem. He also really cares about how you get your answer (like knowing why) and not just memorizing stuff which really resonated with me. He really wanted us to understand it and not just memorize it which I liked best about the course and ultimately I think helped me succeed. Overall, these were my favorite classes at Baylor and I am so glad I took Dr. Plunk and I can't recommend him enough.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3331, 3332 - Plunk is a great guy and great teacher! Occasionally he does not explain concepts super well, but he is very available during office hours and wants the best for his students, so I'd recommend taking him. His tests are difficult but a fun challenge, and he curves them substantially. Take Plunk!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - I took plunk both for o chem 1 & 2 and he is by far one of the better o chem professor! The key to getting an A in his class is not falling behind in lectures and learning every mechanism and truly understanding it.Students that go to his office hours will tell you how much he hates the word memorising so understanding how mechanisms work and doing lots of practice problems. However much effort you put into this class is the grade you will get! Don't get it twisted his exam are very hard but very doable if you read the textbook and understand his lectures. He gives generous curves and lots of exra credit! He makes his students know more in depth information compare to other professor and he LOVES RETRO SYNTHESIS - which hodson or zinke doesnt test much on.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - I was initially super worried about this class, but ended up taking both Organic Chem 1 and 2 with him. While you definitely have to put in the work to understand the content, he has great SI's who made learning the material so much easier. He is also super sweet and very available to help during office hours. While the tests can be challenging, he is very fair with the grading and gives partial credit.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - Dr. Plunk, as many will say, is the best there is. I just took him for summer 1 and he was great. The course was rather rigorous, but that is typical for a summer course. He was very helpful when it came to learning the material, and he made sure that we had a review day before each exam. He interacts well with the class and was also very helpful to people taking OCHEM lab. If you have the opportunity to take Plunk, I'd recommend it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - I love this man, take him if given the opportunity. I expected this to be my hardest class of the semester and it became one of my highest grades. YOU HAVE TO PUT EFFORT IN I YOU WANT TO DO WELL but plunk makes it easy.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Honestly, I loved this guy. He was very helpful and gave great feedback on where to improve. OChem is a hard course for many people, but Plunk made it seem manageable. I will say that it was still a lot of work, but I would take him again over anyone else who teaches Ochem here. He is very available, and his exams reflected his teaching well. He also puts huge curves on exams. He is also a huge fan of research, so he likes to implement research-based stuff into his classroom. For example, he does flipped learning, which he swears by, and honestly, it is a great way to learn and boost your grade.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3332 - I took Dr. Plunk for both OChem 1 and 2, and I must say that he is the very best professor out there. Don't let my grade fool you, if you pay attention in class and study the reagents and mechanisms, it is entirely possible to get an A. I just happen to despise memorization to the point that I never bothered learning the reagents, and that really bit me in the butt. As for grading breakdown, the final is required and worth 20% of the grade, there are 4 during-semester exams, worth a total of 60% of the grade, and the lowest gets dropped. Quizzes are worth 5% of the grade, and there are 6, where one gets dropped. Attendance to "Flipped Fridays" is worth 5% of the grade. Finally, the online homework is worth 10% of the grade, but you can get up to 2% of extra credit on the overall grade if you get all of the homework questions right on the first try (which is rather unlikely to be honest). The exams usually have a handful of multiple choice questions, then the rest are mostly synthesis/ reagent webs. There is usually 1 pop quiz each semester, so keep on top of the content; the rest of the quizzes are usually online and open-book or group quizzes. The homework is anywhere from 30-50 questions assigned a little less than once a week and due on Sundays at 11:59pm. My best advice for anyone who takes Plunk is to review the material immediately after each lecture, making flashcards/Quizlet cards/Anki cards or whatever you prefer for the reagents and working on whatever homework questions you can the same day as it was covered in class. Additionally, I HIGHLY recommend going to Dr. Plunk's office hours. If you can't seem to get a homework question right, he is the best resource and will help you figure out how to work through the problem. Also, whenever you pick up your exams he will walk you through the problems you missed. The class is difficult, but Dr. Plunk is the best resource out there, and I honestly pity anyone who doesn't get to take a class with this awesome professor. I wish anyone looking to take OChem the best of luck! (And please study! Don't be like me!)  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3331/3332 - I am so glad I took Dr. Plunk for 3331/3332. He's the best o chem professor. There's 4 exams and he drops one of them. He also has flipped friday which some people don't like but its very helpful. Even though o chem is hard, Dr. Plunk tries to make it easy and enjoyable. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He's super nice and is willing to help you out. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. TAKE HIM!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331/3332 - I loved Dr. Plunk!! He is so kind and so helpful during office hours. His lectures are not very helpful, but that is expected since there is so much material and only so much time during lectures. However, his exams are pretty straight forward if you study the material on your own. Even though I mostly taught myself everything, he was super helpful during office hours, which is how I was able to learn everything for the exams and do well in the class. I recommend going to his office hours a lot and getting to know him! Everyone talks about how hard Organic Chemistry is but he made the class enjoyable!!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2024-12-18

Comments:3331 - Dr. Plunk's rating being at 75 is honestly criminal. He is by far the best ochem professor in my opinion. He covers material very thoroughly, has great SI's, and doesn't have too heavy of a workload besides the obvious studying that comes along with the course in general. Plunk is also a really sweet guy who will go out of his way to help you if you need it. His class is entertaining enough that I can pay attention easily, and he is eager to answer any questions/consider any suggestions. Overall, the class is difficult because it is a difficult subject, not because of Plunk; if anything, I'd argue that his class is easier because he applies such a generous curve to everything. If you put in the effort with him and this course it will pay off fruitfully.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2024-10-01

Comments:CHE 3331 - Dr. Plunk tries his best to make ochem less stressful, but there is a lot to cover and not a lot of time to cover it. There are times where the class feels rushed. He is very generous with grading, and he has frequent office hours. If you take him, don't be afraid to ask for help  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Dr. Plunk is by far the best Ochem professor. He was extremely helpful and genuinely cared about helping his students pass. I failed the first time taking this course with another professor but I was so happy I got Plunk this past semester because all I hear are good things about him. There are 4 exams and a final & he drops one. he lets you take home your tests as well. He will thoroughly go over your exam with you which is so helpful. I recommend going to his office hours and asking as many questions as possible. I 100% recommend him!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2024-07-01

Comments:CHE 3331 - So, first off, the grade breakdown is out of 1000 points, each during-term exam is worth 200 points and there are 4 total and the lowest is dropped, the final is 200 pts and cannot be dropped, the quizzes are 20 points each, 6 total, and the lowest can be dropped, and the homework is out of 100 points but you can get up to 25 points of extra credit. Plunk is by far the best professor that you can take for Organic Chemistry. He explains everything very well, curves pretty much all of the exams, and gives a really great opportunity for extra credit with the homework. For the homework, you get 10 attempts on each question with 10% off of the total points you can receive for the question with each attempt. That may not seem too bad, but that can really hurt your grade if you burn through attempts (as I often did lol). For the quizzes, 3 of them were take home, 1 was in class, and 1 other was a pop quiz. Dr. Plunk is notorious for giving at least 1 pop quiz per semester, so stay on top of things. For our semester, he used 1 of the 6 quiz grades as a sort of participation grade for the flipped classroom that he started in the second half of the semester. For the exams, I will say that the first two exams were definitely the easiest, so focus on trying to use those to cushion your grade for later. The first 2 units focus on the rules, whereas the 2nd 2 units have you playing "the game" as Dr. P says, so basically things get a lot more difficult. Use the integrated and challenge problems from the textbook to study. I did well on the first two exams by doing that. My last bit of advice is to stay on top of things. I did really well the first half of the semester, but then I stopped studying as much because I wasn't doing as well as I would've liked in my other classes and that ultimately knocked my grade from a mid-A to a B+. Please don't make my mistake. Y'all got this.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 3331 - PLS TAKE HIM!!! Dr.Plunk is extremely considerate of his students, and he is very generous with curves. His tests are very fair usually multiple choice and a few FRQ. He does have a homework assignment due after each chapter but it's nothing crazy if you complete it with enough time. Most of his quizzes are take home assignments but he does do a few pop quizzes in class. Overall, I loved taking this class and although I did struggle, I wouldn't have taken anyone other than Dr. Plunk. He's the BEST.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3331 - I think plunk is the best choice for o chem and if u have the chance to take him TAKE HIM. he grades VERY VERY generously and gives lots of hw extra credit. some of the HW will take u a long time so never do it in one night . his exams are okay but def watch YouTube videos about what ur learning bc he describes things kind vaguely . I could miss every class and not watch the lectures at all and still do okay on the exams ( don't do that LOL -go to class)BUT SI is sometimes helpful, kind of hit or miss. ur best friend is def o chem videos online but bc he grades so nicely its fine! take him!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3331 - Dr. Plunk is BY FAR the most fair ochem professor at Baylor. I didn't pass Hodson's ochem class (which was ungodly difficult btw) and retook it with Plunk. It sounds cheesy but it's because of Dr. Plunk that I can continue my pre health dreams and not be stopped by failing a class. He is such a nice person, and curves a ton (which is something ochem teachers never do). My biggest piece of advice is to do all of the Wiley problems in the textbook because they get you in the mindset of test questions. Seek to understand - not just memorize how to do the mechanisms and you will do great!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 3332 - Dr. Plunk is a great ochem professor. I had him for ochem 1 and now 2. He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. I would not take anyone else for ochem. He grades off a point system, which is nice. He curves a lot and drops the lowest test grade and lowest quiz grade. There is homework and it helps you practice the concepts, however, it's not like the test at all. One or two of the homework is extra credit, which is VERY helpful. The quizzes are the most like the test. I got the grade I got because I didn't study well for two exams, so that is my fault, not the teaching or teacher at all. The final was my best test grade, because he makes it fair and most of it is multiple choice. Overall, a great teacher and I highly recommend him. If you put in the work, then you will do well.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3331/3332 - I had Dr. Plunk for both ochem 1 and ochem 2 and I really liked him. His class is structured out of 1000 points: 200 points for each exam (4 total) and final, 100 points for quizzes throughout the semester, and 100 points for homework. Your lowest exam and quiz score are both dropped, which honestly saved my grade in ochem 2. Also, the HW section is out of 100 points, but there is built in extra credit to this section and I finished with 120 out of 100 points, adding an extra 2% to my overall grade. The biggest piece of advice that I can give for his exams is to answer every single question. Even if you have absolutely no idea what you are doing (which will happen no matter how hard you study, trust me), he gives very generous partial credit, which helps you tremendously. I will say that if you have taken ochem 1 with him and are planning on taking ochem 2 with him, his ochem 2 class is much harder. Make quizlets/ankis with all the syntheses we learn in ochem 1 and try to memorize it before taking ochem 2, a lot of ochem 2 is just applying what we learned in ochem 1 (plus like 500 more reagents womp womp). I highly recommend him and think that if you put effort in it is not too difficult to succeed. Good luck!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3332 - Dr. Plunk is probably one of the best professors you could have for organic chemistry. I took him for both 1 and 2, and I understand that in class you may not get a single thing but if you go back and listen to his lectures again in the media gallery (which he records every single lecture) then you will notice how good he is at explaining things. This semester I don't think I read a single page from the book which is still HIGHLY recommended because it will help you master what you learn, but all my learning was from his lectures and I ended up with an A. He gives bonus points and drops tests so I believe he is super fair. Dr. Plunk is also very approachable, I would go to his office hours once in a while and he has always been very helpful, also don't just make it about chemistry all the time he loves to talk with his students. Finally, his exams are VERY hard, but also he curves VERY hard. My raw tests scores were literally in the 50% if not lower but because his tests are so hard he also curves a lot. It is just the nature of the course because OC is just really hard. Finally his Orgo 2 section is very helpful for OC sections in Standardized tests so PAY ATTENTION. So overall I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Plunk.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - So I love this man. Unfortunately, I am HORRIBLE at organic chemistry and I HATE IT. None of this is his fault, this class is really hard. He wants his students to succeed and he is so kind. He curves generously. The homework is hell tho but only due every friday after finishing a chapter. He posts his lectures, attendance is a sign in sheet (make friends), and there's like a quiz per chapter (some online some suprise, some announced). He brings his kids sometimes which is awesome and I can tell he's a good husband (if that matters to you?). There's four tests and one is dropped. I would take him again but I am SO THANKFUL to be done with this class  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3331 - Dr. Plunk is a great Organic Chemistry professor. I would have probably not done as well if it weren't for him. His tests are difficult, that being said, he curves A LOT. This is probably what helped my grade so much. The homework is a lot and annoying. It doesn't provide you much when it comes to the test, however, it did help me understand some things. There is also extra credit in the homework section, this helps a lot as well. His quizzes are a glimpse of how he tests. He does drop the lowest test grade, which is very nice. He is a great teacher for O-Chem 1.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:OChem I & II - Okay, here's a super honest rundown of this man's class. As you can see, I'm not the best at chemistry. A lot of life/mental health issues unfortunately surfaced while taking these classes, leading me to fail OChem I and needing to retake it. Basically, I was really, really struggling with this class. Now, personal struggles aside, I can honestly say Dr. Plunk cares about his students. He'll set aside time to personally explain topics to you, he's fun and engaging in class, and he really tries to make the whole subject as digestable as possible for everyone. That said, he's also just a really great dude. At one point I was failing the class with a 30 and had to explain to him what was going on in my life, and this man offered to let me skip the next exam and just have my final count twice. As soon as he said that, I almost broke down crying. I'd never had a STEM professor support me in that way and truly try to help me in my situations--I honestly can't speak highly enough of him. If you're like me and chemistry is pretty freaking hard, then yeah, the class won't be easy. But having a professor like him really does help. Thank you, Dr. Plunk.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:CHE3331 - Dr. Plunk is one of my favorite professors. He is a genuine guy who wants his students to learn. His exams are pretty difficult (I cried after taking the first one), but he curves A LOT. I'm talking 20 points. I got an 80 raw score on the first exam, which was curved to a 100. He also gives extra credit homework, which boosted my grade by 4% or something. He did 5 quizzes throughout the semester, but three of them were take-home and one was a group quiz. Ochem is a hard topic, so if you don't study outside of class, it will be hard. But if you go to si and are actively trying to learn, Dr. Plunk is a great professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3331 - Dr. Plunk is a great professor for OChem. I was really worried going into this semester because of the reputation of this class, but it was not bad at all. To be successful, just do the homework and pay attention in class. I literally didn't buy the textbook. He is super nice, has tons of office hours, and his SI was helpful too. My only complaint is that his quizzes and exams were often overly difficult and really made sure that you've actually learned the material, rather than just memorizing things. That said, he gives a massive amount of partial credit if you've shown that you somewhat understand the material, so if you feel like you bombed an exam, you probably will end up with a better grade than you think you got.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - Dr. Plunk is a great guy. But he just does so many examples without actually explaining the process behind it. His extra credit and curving is what helped me pass.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:CHE 4331 - Dr Plunk. what. a. MAN. Super fair grader. tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed. Super helpful when you are in need of it. OF COURSE ITS A TWO WAY STREET. YOU CANNOT JUST EXPECT HIM TO HELP YOU WITHOUT PUTTING IN THE EFFORT. take advantage of his young age. by that, i mean pick his brain. he has a lot of wisdom and his tips and experiences can be super beneficial to helping your future, as he just recently went through everything you may be going through. science changes on a daily basis. so he seems most up to date. good luck.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 and 3332 - I absolutely love Dr. Plunk!!! His course is a little bit more unconventional than the other ochem professors but equips you more than well enough for the future. If you put in the effort, read the textbook, do all the practice problems in the book, go to SI, and complete the homework and quizzes you will do just fine. He is also super helpful during office hours, curves the exams really well, and gives you a drop. Highly recommend if you thrive with self-studying  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-12-06

Comments:3331 and 3332 - Plunk is not that bad, you just have to know what he wants and is gonna look for. The hw is annoying and due every Friday, but it does have some good practice problems and you can easily split it among people to do it faster. Almost every quiz is a pdf that you can access and is do online at 10pm a few days after being posted, so literally just look up similar problems online or in the book and you will be fine. He curves the quizzes. The tests are the main portion of your grade, has 4 exams with the final and drops one of the first four exams. He curves extremely heavily, like 20% at least on a test so really the main way to succeed is by being at the top of the curve and how you do that is by going to SI, especially the review sessions. She as access to his tests and will give you so many tricks to use that make his tests so much easier. What you also need to do is memorize every reagent and what it makes with flashcards, its a lot of work but I promise it will pay off. You also need to know the mechanisms for his tests, but he only tests on the ones in the ppt and also that mechanisms that he spends the most time on in class. If the mechanism is named after someone like Grignard, that will more than likely be on the test. Wathc O chem tutor as well if you need more help on explaining concepts. It is very possible to get an A and definitely a B, just don't be lazy and the KEY is being better than most people in your class, you don't have to be near perfect but as long as you are better than most people, you will get a good grade.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-11-16

Comments:3331 - It's possible to get an A!! Dr. Plunk gives great curves on all his exams. He gives over 20 points of homework extra credit on top of the curved exams. Even though my exam average was a B, the extra credit, homework, and quizzes brought me up to an A. Don't stress about the quizzes. We had one ANNOUNCED in class quiz and one POP quiz in class. The rest of the quizzes are 'take home' and he usually gives a generous curve on those as well since they're difficult. There's online homework every week which isn't bad at all. The questions are fairly easy and are just meant to teach you the basic principles of the chapter. He even said that the point of the homework is for it to boost your grade. Everyone should be getting an A on the homework, and if you're not, go to his office hours and he'll help you solve the problem. Overall, I would take Dr. Plunk again. He's super nice and gives GREAT CURVES! He's not the best teacher, but O-chem is class where you have to teach yourself no matter what professor you have. After every exam, I thought I failed it, but after the curve, I got amazing scores. You just have to beat the average to succeed in this class. Don't fall behind and don't wait last minute to study. Remember, O-chem is supposed to be hard, but if you're trying your best, chances are you're doing better than most students. Good Luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3238 - advanced ochem lab: TAKE THIS CLASS! especially if you are interested in research. It is so fun. You get to do synthesis in a research setting. I was unsure about research so I took this course as a "test run". I highly recommend doing this. As far as the class is structured there are 4 midterm lab reports (1 page) and one big final lab report (3-5 pages) that make up most of the work that you do outside of the lab. The lab is a chill and fun learning environment. There are no pre-labs/post labs. Best class I have taken at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Literally don't take him. He is the sweetest man on the planet and tries to be so helpful, but he just is an awful teacher. I tried to take him last semester but dropped on the last day to take a W. I am retaking O chem this year with a different professor and learned more in the first two weeks then I did in half a semester of Plunk's class. I honestly don't blame Plunk for everything I honestly just think he chose an awful textbook for his class. You may end up making a decent grade in his class, I dropped when I had a B+, but I will tell you with 100% confidence you will be screwed for O chem 2. For reference he started drawing random structures on the board on the first day of school and also wouldn't label anything ever. I think he is such a smart individual I just think since this is his first year teaching he has not mastered that skill yet. Not trying to be a hater, but if you get him for your teacher you need to most likely go to his office hours every week so that you can figure out what he is talking about because in class you will learn nothing. Also I would buy another textbook on top of the one y'all use in his class because that one is actually garbage.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:3331 - DO NOT TAKE! I took Plunk last semester and dropped within 3 weeks. He knows the material well, but also expects everyone to know it just as well. He does curve exams generously, but if you want to be prepared for ochemII and biochem, don't take him. I am retaking ochemI now and I have an A. Take someone else!  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:3331 - He is a professor that really listens to his students and really takes the effort you put in into account. Organic Chemistry is hard, but with Plunk he really just wants to prepare you for Ochem 2, you have to put the work in, read the textbook, DO THE CHALLENGE PROBLEMS I'm telling you they save your butt, he's a good professor especially in office hours, he works with you, and is always open to questions even if you interrupt him like I did...several times, he answers questions well and always posts how to work through problems on canvas, and always offer extra credit, recommend if you need this class for the MCAT.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Yes, this is a hard class and I would not pick Dr. Plunk first considering one has to balance such a big workload as a pre med student. However, do not fret if you take him. He is so nice and so fun! The tests are curved and he even drops 1. There are quizzes and homework for cushion and the final is 20%. I would spend all weekend studying and reading over the entire textbook and working all of the problems. Work every single one. Then work it again. Then reread the notes. I ended up working just the skillbuilders and regular problems towards the end. If you are willing to grind this class out, anyone can learn it. Also, be ready to not know anything on the test. You will be fine! & Go to office hours!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Dr. Plunk is my favorite professor ever. I was terrified to take ochem, but it has become my favorite subject. His exams (4) are hard, but he curves them a ton. You can get over 100% on exams. I strongly recommend the textbook. I read every page of this book and did every problem in the text. Along with this, I went to office hours three times a week. Dr. Plunk is a very approachable professor who relates to his students and wants us to succeed. Dr. Plunk loves to answer questions. If something did not make sense in class I would just raise my hand and say I was confused. He would then find another way to explain the material. The class period before every exam was a big "office hour". Most of Dr. Plunk's quizzes are take home (12 quizzes), the exams are REALLY curved, and you get a drop quiz and exam. I think a good grade in this class is very manageable if you go to office hours, and put the time in. I also heard he is having an SI next semester which should be really helpful. (we did not have one) Dr. Plunk has sparked my love for organic chemistry. I would especially recommend taking him if you love chemistry, are interested in research, and/or love a challenge.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Listen, Dr Plunk gets a lot of unncessary hate. Of course the class is hard and having a new teacher admittedly has its cons, but he is really not that bad. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. in his office hours he is so personable and really willing to help! for the tests, do literally every single practice problem in the textbook and make sure you understand them. the homework is a lot easier than the level he tests on. so don\'t let that think youre gonna be fine. the best part about dr plunk is he curves everything!!! he curves every test and most of the quizzes. he drops your lowest quiz and hw and one test (not the final). he really isnt that bad and i would take him again if i had too.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Being a new professor, I can understand the pressure of teaching hundreds of college students who have no idea how to work an organic chemistry problem. You can feel the passion behind Plunk's teaching style, however, it can quickly feel like an overwhelming amount of information to absorb in a 50 minute period. It's obvious that Plunk is very knowledgeable on the subject of organic chemistry, but he has to remember that we have no prior experience of the topic and may need more time and practice with each concept before we move on to the next. The homework assignments were on achieve and about 35-50 problems of the core/basics of each concept. They were not that helpful in relation to the test, but they helped in understanding the basics. His tests were a mix of multiple-choice, drawing out mechanisms, or just working through a mechanism. His tests are also on a huge curve (usually 35% or something absurd), so you're really just competing against your classmates. I definitely recommend buying the textbook just for the practice problems! Good luck to anyone who takes it, just carve out some good time dedicated to this class :)  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 3331 - Dr. Plunk is a new professor here. Like a lot of new professors, he does not really know what he is doing. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice guy, but his lectures aren't very well planned and his teaching ability is lacking. The way he grades is by grading you based on your performance relative to your peers. This is how I consistently got 100+ on most of the exams. If you ever end up having to take his class, simply outperform everyone else. Everything is in the textbook and his exams are very similar to the practice questions in the textbook. He has frequent office hours and I found his office hours more helpful than the in class lectures.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - While he is a cool person to talk to, Plunk is definitely NOT a good teacher. I struggled a lot in his class, and he did not have many resources for help. I found it very hard to study for his exams, as everything was fair game from the textbook (and then only 2-3 main concepts would be on the exam!). The homework and quizzes were manageable, and I did OK on them, but they in no way prepared me for the exams. I failed almost every exam, even after many many hours of studying. The only good thing about Plunk is that he does curve a lot, but even with this curve I found it very hard to be successful in his course. Ochem is already extremely hard, and I believe taking Plunk will honestly make it more difficult. I would have never thought that getting D+/C's would ever make me so happy before. I would have dropped his class, but unfortunately, I had to complete ochem I for my personal academic plans.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3331 - Organic Chemistry is hard enough yet Dr. Plunk somehow made it even more difficult. Homework and quizzes were manageable, and according to them, I mastered the content. I would study for hours on end on the content, working on problems in the book and problems on mastering chem feeling good but when I get the exam, it felt like I was looking at the foreign language. He made the problems in the book, homework. and material we cover in class seem like preschool work. Hardest exams I've ever taken in my life and he does not give out study guides.   - Grade In Class:DROP
