Comments:1409 - Dr. Fier is a great professor. Like many classes, you'll have to do most of your learning on your own time. It's pretty simple in theory to get an A-- do the readings before lecture, listen during lecture, do the textbook problems after, and then the homework problems. Generally, I found the homework to be varying degrees of difficulty. For some chapters they are super easy, others they are VERY hard. His exams are pretty tough, and make sure to review your scores with him after because often he'll give more partial credit. For multiple choice math questions, if you don't show your work but pick the correct answer you won't get full credit, but to be fair he'll give partial credit on incorrect answers if he see's you're on the right track. I would say try to get perfect scores on the homework and do decently in lab and as long as you're practicing nearly every day you should be good. if you have a personal issue come up he's good about making accommodations, just be sure to ask. For lab, I recommend doing your pre-lab/lab report in the physics tutoring area in the BSB so you can ask the grad students question-- ALSO SAVE YOUR DROP for the lab-- if you can save it for the AC lab, definitely do that because its pretty tough or save it for the last one so you can use that time to study for finals. I personally enjoyed group tutoring for general concepts, but the textbook problems are KEY for doing well on the exams. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1409 - I took Dr. Fier for 1408 and then again for 1409 because I really enjoyed him. I think most of his bad reviews here are from students who took him a while back and maybe in a calculus section. Or, simply students that did not want to put in the work because it is physics. It is not going to just be a cakewalk (believe it or not). I absolutely loved him. I thought that the class was well structured where if you did the book problems and put in the work with the material, you were going to succeed. He has perfected his powerpoints as well now that he is a couple years into teaching the courses. He also curves the tests which helps a lot. Dr. Fier gives us review sessions before every exam and he even spent 3 days reviewing in class for the final. He is a very fair professor and an even better person once you get to know him. Just take him. I believe that Dr. Fier is the best option for physics. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1408 - It's physics it is going to be hard so expect that. Dr. Fier is a legend. His power points are well crafted. I had a great experience. Book problems were key for practice. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHY 1430 - He covers more chapters than other physics 2 professors and uses more calculus. Other physics professors will reuse problems from homework or the book on exams so you’ll at least see it before, but Fier doesn’t reuse any problems. He makes it a strong point that he hates memorization and only likes concepts/logic. His tests definitely reflect that. I previously made an A in physics 1 by doing practice problems in the book, but that was not applicable to Fier’s course. Half way through I switched to only looking at concepts from his power points and I was able to ace the last couple tests to bring me up from failing to a C+. I would recommend other professors because his course is very volatile when it comes to homework deadlines and assignments (He will assign mastering physics last minute and only give a few days to complete it). Lastly, grades took weeks to get out since he had a grader and the way the tests were graded was highly inconsistent. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1408 - There's honestly no good physics professor at Baylor from what I have experienced. His teaching method isn't the best unless you love PowerPoints. He doesn't work out problems in class just kind of clicks through the process and the answer within seconds and nothing is explained well enough for you to understand where the numbers are coming from or how he got the answer. Don't get me wrong he's extremely nice and even sarcastically funny in class however not a good professor. The HW is iffy it can be either really easy or super hard and long however none of it correctly reflects how his exams are. They are typically composed of a few multiple choice questions around 5 with around 3-5 word problems. While he does give credit for simply going through the questions nothing really seems to help your grade. And he takes forever to grade... you have been warned! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1409 - take another professor, his exams are difficult compared to his lectures which I don't get. He's very nice and understanding but just not good at delivering physics. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:PHY 1408 - the last review is right. dr. fier is very average, but that's a good thing. he's probably the best option for prehealth students needing physics. he's funny and has good powerpoint lectures. his exams are pretty difficult, but he curves A LOT. he also drops an exam. the exams are 1/4 multiple choice and 3/4 free response. free response questions were always out of pocket, but he gives partial credit. the final was better than i'd expected. there's masteringphysics homework as well. the one thing i did not like about his class was the amount of time he'd take to grade (for one exam it took 2 days and for another it took almost 4 weeks). anyway, i'm taking him again for 1409. i would recommend. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1408 - This class is the most average I've ever taken. Fier is a nice guy but he's mid at teaching. The tests are mid but he curves them pretty nicely. The homework is mid. Honestly I feel the same about taking him again for 1409 or taking someone else. Just an extremely average professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PHY 1408 - Run. I honestly don’t know what the last two reviews are talking about (like, passionate about physics and determined to guide his students to success??? LMAO, what student writes reviews like that). His lectures are extremely basic and explain concepts and run through VERY basic example that are already solved with steps in the book. So basically useless. We have never had an example in class that reflected the difficulty of the actual exam or even the homework for that matter. Whether you’re actually trying to learn something or just looking for an easy A, look elsewhere. I dedicated more time to this class then any or my other classes, and for reference, I currently have a 96 in Ochem II. I also got an A in calc so being able to do math and study well isn’t enough for his class. You quite literally need to do every complex practice problem in the book to be prepared for the FIFTY MINUTE exams. Take Nazzario if your looking for an easy A, that’s who I’m taking for 1409. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:PHY1420 - I love Dr Fier! He is the nicest and most helpful professor I have ever had. The class is very hard (im also just bad at physics) so I recommend going to his office hours as he is VERY good at explaining things and also extremely patient and kind about it. Tutoring center is helpful in the first half of the class, not so much after. Unfortunately he is not available a ton and his office hours usually lie during/overlap my other classes so it is sometimes more difficult to get help, but still possible if I’m willing to make the effort. The amount of homework itself is not a ton but the work itself is difficult so can sometimes take awhile. Still pretty average though. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1409 - Dr. Fier is such a great professor!! He is very passionate about the subject and very easy to talk to about the concepts in class and how they apply to greater works beyond the class, making the content much more interesting. Dr. Fier is determined to guide his students toward success in the class. He curves and gives some extra credit on the exams. Definitely take him for this class!! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - Dr. Fier's class was literally impossible, I had taken Calculus before but this was nothing like it. He was always available for office hours but it barely helped, I even went to SI almost every week, and that only helped me pass the class. I don't recommend him for Calculus 1321. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1409 - For a professor who is teaching this course for the first time, Dr. Fier has very little mercy and understanding for his students. Lectures are fairly straightforward and easy to follow, but his exams do not reflect his lectures. No guidance about how to study for his exams is offered and his office hours are not productive in the sense that they don't prepare you for what to really expect difficulty wise on the exams. I would recommend almost any other professor if possible! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1408 - Dr. Fier is probably the best choice for 1408 and 1409. I think he did very well considering Fall 2021 was his first semester teaching. Lectures were fairly helpful as he explained the material in a manner that was easy to understand and he did example problems in class for each concept. The biggest upside to this class in my opinion is that you probably won't have the read the book (I didn't) and homework is a completion grade. His tests were kind of difficult but he curved generously, which really helped my grade. Definitely take him if you can! - Grade In Class:A
