Comments:KOR 1301 - If you're native or know a decent amount of Korean, this class wouldn't be a problem. However, especially for non-native Korean speakers, this class can be difficult as she teaches fast. In addition, the participation grade (which is 25% of your overall grade) can be lowered if you miss classes (ex. one class equals 93% max for participation grade). However, she copies the questions from the textbook to the texts (the study guide shows which one) which makes it easy as you have the guidance on which to study.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2320 - She is such a helpful teacher. I think many students take this class expecting it to be like learning Spanish or German, but learning a completely new alphabet can be difficult to pick up. If you need help go to office hours or meet with the tutor. She is always willing to help you if you are willing to put the work in. I took all the way up to Korean 4 and she became so close with our small group because of the dedication we showed! Don't be scared to take this class I had so much fun!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1301 - Don't take her. It's better to just teach yourself Korean, she just reads from the book and informs you of Korean culture. You put in so many hours of learning Korean by yourself, that it's just better to teach yourself.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:KOR 1302 - It was super easy for me but only because I'm Korean. I speak Korean fluently, but speaking is much different from writing, so I did learn a good amount in terms of spelling and grammar. Her quizzes and tests are straight off the book. She gives you a study guide with all the pages you need to study. The test is literally that. I would memorize all the vocab 10 minutes before class and ace the quiz. Same with tests. She's doesn't explain things very well, and if I wasn't Korean I don't think I would have done well in this class. She really wants to help, but can't explain things in English very well. Also, doesn't seem to understand people's questions. My friend took the class with me and he struggled a lot. If this is your first time learning Korean, I recommend learning before taking this class. It's pretty fast paced. She does seem to have preferences, but I aced the assessments so it didn't matter. You don't need to worry about if she likes you or not, just do well on the exams and quizzes and you'll get an A. Ooh the homework though, she assigns a BUNCH of pages which is are more a pain to do than they are hard. But you have like a week to do them. Do the homework, she actually checks it. She offers a lot of extra credit like going to sing and dance for multicultural events. I never went though, didn't need to. If you're fluent in speaking, easy A. You can get away with grammar and spelling, she'll teach you that.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - She's a lovely lady (at least to me), but she does rush through a lot of stuff. If you are not good with Korean or if you don't want to put a lot of work into this class (which you have to do for any language courses), then I don't recommend taking this class. Her explaining skill is not that great. It was easy for me to understand it since I'm fluent in Korean and English at the same time, but if you are not good with Korean, I recommend you to take another language class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1402 - Gyosuneem is an interesting woman. I was definitely not on her good side, but she is a nice person. She loves to joke around and make her students laugh. If you want her to respect you, you must respect her. She may not be the best teacher in the world but she isn't the worst. A lot of this class will be you teaching yourself or asking the native speakers your questions. The only homework is the workbook. I paced myself by doing two to three pages each night so that I didn't cram the night before. This helped because two nights before the exam I was able to focus on her study guide she provides at least a week before. As long as you go over the study guide you're good for the exam! The quizzes are fairly easy as long as you look over it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:ALL - Eh. She rushes through so many sections that most of us aren't even learning anything anymore, and stopped learning after the 1400 level. She stops class too often to ramble about things she's already explained at least 5 times before. She likes you if you give her food or go to her office often and try to get on her good side. This class was interesting and helped us all get closer as friends and peers, but I wish she actually taught us. All we do in class is read the book, which you can do on your own. All tests come straight from exercises in the workbook, so just memorize those. Quizzes are easy enough. Otherwise, there isn't much work besides the occasional essay when you get to the 2300 level.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1410,1420,2310,2320 - Kyosunim has really grown on me as a professor and personal mentor. If you really take the time to visit her, show her you really have a drive to learn Korean, and attempt (to the best of your abilities) to make conversation with her in Korean, then it's not hard to get on her good side. She is really great about developing relationships with her students and is consistently there to help or simply talk. Honestly, anyone that has something against her is likely bitter about their grades. But, to be fair, she is a VERY lenient grader and understands that the majority of her class is non-native speakers. I'm not necessarily native or non-native (half-Korean) and definitely not fluent, but there's never really homework, and I would spend about 2 hours max studying for the exams (they're easy if you study the study guide well). CON: She's often behind schedule and towards the end of the semester, we'll feel really rushed to learn everything, but it works out if you don't slack (start ahead on lessons). The class itself allows every student to engage in the discussion, but don't be embarrassed because we're all there to learn in some way, shape, or form. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this class in my four semesters taking it, and Kyosunim has done a wonderful job of teaching me more about my heritage and its language.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401, 1402, 2310 - If you decide to take this class, memorize the book. None of the material is her own, so just memorize the sections she tells you will be on the quizzes/tests. Don't expect to come out of this class knowing anything more than what you already did going into it. She doesn't speak English well so her explanations of concepts end up making you more confused than you were before. She makes a lot of comments that can be upsetting, but she doesn't mean them in the way you're gonna take them. Honestly, this class isn't worth it but if you decide to take it, be ready to teach yourself or find a tutor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1402 - I personally think the class thus far has been pretty easy- it's not a class I worry about in terms of grades and it's not really hard to memorize a few vocabulary words when needed and for tests. What's hard is that she doesn't really teach you conversation skills or listening skills- it's great to be good at reading and writing, but I wish she'd take more time to ensure that we knew how to have a conversation. She doesn't really take the time to ensure that you're actually learning- she kinda just gives you stuff and is like "well there you go you're on your own buddy" unless you show up to her office hours and she'll explain things for you. She favors people who come to conversation table and has favorites in every class, but if you volunteer for things and get good grades, you'll be on her good side and she'll love joking around with you. She does a lot of food-based events for the students. She can be funny and sweet, but over the top sometimes. I came in knowing some Korean, so I think that if you're thinking of taking her, learn at least the alphabet and number system because she barely gives you time to learn how to read it and adjust. You get vocab quizzes almost weekly and a few tests over the semester, along with some extra credit/participation stuff like (easy, short) power points. I'll be taking her through 2300s to complete the language requirement, but I'll definitely need to start self-teaching more so I can actually get concepts down.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2320 - Look, I am just going to be completely honest in this review. I had Professor Kim (교수님) from Korean 1401 all the way to 2320. It is true that yes she does take a preference for Korean male students. HOWEVER, if you are active in class and just really get to know her at Korean Conversation table and talk to her she is super nice. Her teaching style is not bad, you just have to pay attention in class and participate. Attendance is key. I would advice not skipping class if at all possible because she does deduct points. Tests can be hard depending on how much you have studied. They are usually at max 3 pages and knowing as much vocabulary as you can is recommended. She really is nice and quirky and loves to gossip about who is dating who but as a Korean professor she's not bad. Korean itself is a pretty difficult language to learn but if you ask questions she will not hesitate to explain if you are having trouble. I must let you know that there is not much homework in this class other than the occasional 150 word (not that much) essay and 3-4 slide powerpoint. There are vocabulary quizzes which is straight memorization and other quizzes where you have to create a conversation using 15 vocabulary words from the box. Overall she's really funny and nice once you get to know her. She does not use canvas so if you want to know your grade you must let her know. If you want extra credit, she will give you opportunities throughout the year to mostly volunteer at North Russell Hall mostly for like Korean cultural events like cooking traditional Korean food. Just don't slack off, do the workbook, study for tests and be kind to her and she will like you too.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1402 - She doesn't know how to teach. The only reason why she serves as a teacher is because her husband is the head of the language department. How funny. She only favors Koreans and tries to bribe you to do things for grades.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401, 1402 - Don't let the more recent comments fool you. She's terrible. I was one of those able to successfully suck up, and the material wasn't too hard, and I am still telling you she's terrible. I have learned more Korean from youtube and a dictionary than she will ever teach me. Save yourself the money, make a youtube account and buy yourself a korean-English phrasebook or dictionary. I am so serious. Fulfilling your language requirement is not worth all this. Take another language.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 & 1402 - DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY PROFICIENT IN KOREAN, easy class if you are korean, otherwise this class will be way to hard as she goes over a lot really quickly  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-05-25

Comments:2310 - She is AWESOME! I've taken 3 classes with her and received an A in every one of them. Take her; she's actually one of the professors whose class is almost worth the amount of money we shell out to Baylor.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-12-24

Comments:1402 - So, Korean courses definitely have a lot of Korean people in them, who don't need to learn how to speak Korean. My friends in Chinese didn't have that going on, so Korean class is just weird like that. That makes for a weird dynamic that not everyone enjoys. Still, she is really nice and helpful if you go in for her office hours. She will totally work with you, but you probably might not get everything you need just from class.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-05-28

Comments:1401 - I'm a native speaker so I had little trouble with the course. I have heard that she is very helpful outside of class if you go to her office hours. My class had few native speakers so I feel like she was forced to teach more than she has been used to. The workbook sucks-- ~50 pages due before tests. 25% of the grade in the class is attendance.. so go to class. There's a quiz over each chapter. Exam over every 2 chapters. Exams are pretty much straight out of the textbook/workbook exercises.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-12-03

Comments:1402 - She is a good teacher. Korean is a hard language to teach and learn. It's a good idea to study with another Korean native speaker while taking this class. This will probably help you much. She usually tries to pair everyone up with a native speaker anyway.. Her teaching style is okay, she's been doing this for a long time so she knows what she is doing. I feel like its the effort you put in that'll reflect your grade. Homework load is not much, she'll go straight off the syllabus. Tests are fill in the blanks, conjugating, and maybe some essay? Overall she's a good professor..and the only professor that teaches korean.. :D  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - 교수님 (Gyosunim) is extremely helpful outside of class during her office hours. It's quite sad that a lot of students in her class slack off and treat her without respect. I've thoroughly enjoyed taking Korean and have learned a lot of Korean culture. There is not too much homework. However, if you are wanting to improve your Korean, you'll need to study outside of class. The professor gives study guides to quizzes and tests so pay attention to what she says in class. Tests are straightforward and it's not too hard to know what to expect in them.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Korean - I dont know about other comments.. but she is really nice and helpful if you go in for her office hours. She really works with you!!! Don't be afraid to go talk to her! :)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - I am surprised by some of these reviews. Kyo Soo Nim was very helpful to me and I feel as though I learned a lot. I started off the class with a C and ended with a B+ through hard work and going to her office hours. She does sometimes seem confused while teaching certain things but overall for a Korean language class where Korean would never be an easy class unless you're already a native speaker, she wasn't that bad. The most important thing about taking her class if your not a native speaker is to befriend a native speaker in the class and work a lot with them. If you are a native speaker then you'll be okay.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-12-19

Comments:1401 - She is terrible!!! She doesn't know how to teach, and expects everyone in the class to already know Korean because 75% of the class is already native. She is so terrible...and only likes the boys, so if you're not a boy then you will probably not get any favoritism in her class. Pick another language.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1401, 1402, 2310, 2320 - if you want a good teacher, don't take this class. if you want to learn korean, don't take this class. if you want a good learning environment, don't take this class. see where i'm getting at? taking these courses was TORTURE. the teacher couldn't teach and just read out of an outdated book and expected the nonspeakers to understand everything she was talking about. half the time the 9/10ths of the class that COULD speak korean were gossiping so loudly, those of us that tried to learn couldn't hear what she said in her broken accent, anyway. if you're a guy or can speak korean, though, go ahead and take the class for an easy A. she's sexist and bias, so you'll do great! otherwise, if you decide to take the class, you'll be in hell like i was. quizzes are a joke, they're just memorization of irrelevent vocab. for tests, she gives you a ridiculous review. memorize all of it and you'll maybe get a B on the tests. homework is usually exercises or long, random translations. oh, and don't miss class, that's worth 25% of your ENTIRE SEMESTER GRADE. perfect attendence will get you a 96. UUUGH this class was freaking RIDICULOUS!!!! the teacher has an accent in both korean AND english, which makes her completely incomprehensible. and she hardly gives perfect scores on anything. which is probably her way of getting bribes. because ooooooh, does she take them. get her a coffee mug or "bake" her some cookies or buy her a pencil case...she'll probably even take straight up cash. A;LSGJDA;OI4JP3FGO!!! i really don't have anything good to say about her or the course. just don't take korean at baylor. just...don't do it.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-05-06

Comments:1301, 1302, 2301 - Wow, what more can I say than what already hasn't been covered by previous comments? Her class was absolutely dreadful. If you're into gossiping, you'll fit right at home, as class usually started with 10-15 minutes of it. She seems to be homophobic and racist at times, and will try to push her opinions of morality onto you during said "gossip time." Oh, and she's an awful professor. If you don't speak Korean at all, take another language. If you speak Korean, take another language. She speaks some weird dialect (not sure if it's satoori or not), so you'll have to learn her funny accent or else she'll get onto you. Take this class at your own risk!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-04-14

Comments:1401 1402 2301 2302 - Not a very good teacher at all. If your not a native speaker you should seriously consider taking a different language. If you are, the class should be a breeze since you know everything anyway. Don't expect to learn anything new. Just get your grade and move on.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-01-08

Comments:KOR 1402 - Well, class was ok this semester. She does kinda favors so be on her good side. Don't sleep and be extremely late to class. Attendant is 25%of grade and if you miss after 5 days, its a B already. I like to learn korean so its a good class for me. She is not that bad overall.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2006-05-17

Comments:1401 - I try emailing her to ask for my grades. It got return to me because she doesn't have baylor email. How can that be? Does she even use the computer? Anyways, I didn't understand anything until the last week of the semester when it comes to finals. Grrrrrrrr.......she ruin my GPA!  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2005-12-12

Comments:1401 - OMG. I dropped this course as fast as I could. Although I can read Korean pretty decently, and understand it when spoken, she made me extremely dislike the language (and I'm Korean!). Don't take this class with her. It's like a living nightmare. And she's not very sympathetic to her students when they ask her for help. You have to ask your "partner" in class for help. Of course, if you're paired with a crappy partner, you're out of luck.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:1401, 2310 - jesus christ!!!!!!!!!!! she's freaking crazy! she can't teach at all, and her accent is so bad you can't understand her korean or her english. it's absolutely amazing that she can talk in the first place considering her face is soooo tight from all her plastic surgery. if you can't speak korean, don't think that your going to learn it. i'm taking her for 2310 right now...i want to die. i dread each day with her. if you take her...learn to suck up, big time. she favors certain people, which suck b/c i'm not one of them. if you like cruel and unusual punishment, take her. if not...take another language!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2004-11-14

Comments:1 - Considering that she is the ONLY korean professor at Baylor, my advice is look into a different language. She teaches different material every semester meaning that the one semester that you might have her, it could be easy or hard. She once told the whole class to learn 52+ medical terms because majority of the class was pre-med. I was not.   - Grade In Class:F
