Comments:1322 - I want to preface this with the fact that I'm a math guy. I understand that many others are not. I genuinely loved Professor Gwynn. She does use a backwards classroom method, meaning you do the notes outside of class and look at them in more depth in class. While this does require a good amount of time, her notes and in-class examples were very helpful. Her exams are somewhat difficult, but she does set you up for success. You really should go to her office hours whenever possible and show that you actually care about learning the content and doing well. I did the same, and I felt like she genuinely went out of her way to help me be successful in her class. It's a hard adjustment at first, but I would definitely take Professor Gwynn again. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:business calc - Ok so ill tell you everything you need to know about ms Gwynn, she's a very nice lady, loved her a person she's very caring funny and is easy to get along with, however, taking her course definitely is on the more difficult side and here's why, starting off with her teaching style, she goes over the notes and stuff in class fairly well but when she teaches she docent go too much into depth about the specific topic, and I noticed I struggled in this especially once we got to the harder stuff, because there were some times where the unit was pretty challenging and I had to teach myself with YouTube videos because I felt I wasn't prepared enough on the material. She sometimes assigns you vids to watch, and people make it sound bad in the reviews but its really not that bad, she just goes over a few problems and u take notes on them, but I think this needs to go and everything should be kept in the classroom, so if you're a slower learner and don't understand things as fast then do NOT take her. Next the quizzes, which honestly are one of the best parts of her class, u get to make a cheat sheet before every quiz, and usually they're similar to the homework questions which is great, but speaking of homework, there's definitely some problems. Her homework are somewhat helpful for understanding some of the material, but there's definitely sections that honestly aren't really helpful at all and are way too hard, and I noticed that a lot of the stuff in the later homework we don't really even learn, so I just feel like it was a waste of time, still do the homework, but just a heads up some will be hard. Next up the tests, which im 50/50 on, the good things are she assigns the tests later on in the day so you have more time, usually theyre in the evening, and also she prepares you very well for the final, just practice the practice final reviews and all the tests she gives and you should get a guaranteed passing grade, but there are some negatives, she is a hard grader so expect to show all your work and do her ways that she teaches you, sometimes the tests are only 8 questions, which I didn't like because if you get 1 wrong then its basically an automatic b, and the tests are honestly fair, I wouldn't say theyre too hard, or too easy, its more of the fact that you MUST show all work and you get lots of points off for that, as she cares more about work than final answer. I think ms Gwynn is an amazing person, but if you take her, be prepared to have to do lots of studying and teach yourself the material, I had never taken calc before and I got a B+ with her, but only because I put in the work outside her class. Also forgot to mention her office hours are probably the worst thing about her, she always says that if you need help come to her office hours, but the times I came I just sat at a table and when I asked for help, I almost felt like I was just in the classroom again, and she wasn't explaining it in a way where I would understand. I honestly wouldn't recommend taking her as a proffessor if you haven't taken calc before, but I do love her as a person and she always brings good energy, that's what I love about her, great person. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:MTH 1321 - Dr. Gwynn is definitely one of the harder calc professors at Baylor. As others said, she operates a flipped classroom where you watch videos at home and then show up to class and essentially review. She will also work out problems in class which are probably the most helpful part of class. If you don't watch the videos, you are shooting yourself in the foot and will not succeed in the class. She actually gives a decent amount of extra credit for your exams if you take all the opportunities available. I probably got an extra 5-8 points on all 3 of my midterms at the end of the semester. I did get C's on my midterms, but she actually did a surprisingly good job of preparing me for the final where I got an A. This was a similar story with many of my friends in Gwynn, where we didn't do great on midterms but we all got A's and high B's on the departmental final. Dr. Gwynn is a fine option for calculus, just put in the work and you can at least scrape by with a B. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:MTH 1309 - DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!! She is awful at teaching and I know college is where you are suppose to take learning into your own hands, but you go to her office hours and everyone else is there, so you won't see her or get your questions answered. They may get answered, but you won't be able to fit into her office to be able to know which problem she's addressing let alone how to solve it. If you are looking to pay for an independent tutor, take her. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:1321 - They weren't lying when people said to take the class at a community college. Lots of people think it's the hardest class they've ever taken. 10 people in my class of 30 dropped, and the only people I think who got As were people who had taken Calc before. As someone who hadn't taken it, I hated it. Tons of work, tests were hard, and the grades were shockingly low across the board every time. I got like a 73 on the first test and apparently that was good considering how bad everyone else did. Flipped class, so it's hard to learn, I didn't want to watch videos after being in class and still do hw. The hw wasn't hard, but if you don't know how to do it, you're cooked. I would study by going over notes and doing the reviews with no help, and just make sure you completely understand everything. For the final exam, it's impossible, best thing to do is study the past exams. Overall I couldn't tell if she was a bad teacher or the subject was simply really hard, but I would suggest taking a teacher that doesn't have a flipped class. I only got a B cause I clutched on a test and got a 100, the rest were in the 70s. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:MTH - 1322 - She is a terrible professor. She makes you do notes online and then goes over the notes we already did in class which is just a waste of time. If you take her be prepared to teach yourself almost everything. She also continuously says that “this problem is pretty straightforward” which is just wrong and makes you feel stupid. When you are confused the way she talks to you is kind of demeaning which is just annoying. She is also extremely full of herself and constantly talks about how great of a teacher she is and how she is the best Calculus II professor at Baylor which is also annoying. If you are good at math and can use chatgpt to teach yourself, you can do fine but if you can not good luck. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1321 - i liked prof gwynn, she's very sweet and willing to help u if u have any problems. BUT i took calc 1 in high school and i'm good at math and both of my parents are math professors at a different school; i didn't struggle much. i think she's a good professor if you're good at math but if you forgot a lot of stuff from precal you probably should review everything if you have to take her. i think she might be one of the nicer profs though - so sticking with her might be best. BUT if you struggle a lot with math already take my review with a grain of salt bc you might have a diff experience. she does a flipped class (you have to watch vids of lectures before the actual class) and i lwk liked it bc as she often said, we had more time to go over harder practice problems, ask questions, etc. and it's not a big deal if u have to miss her class cause you got sick or smt. i often wondered why i went to class bc i'd just seen the lecture but yk what, i think it did help. the last person who reviewed was right about achieve. it sucks and it gives you awful numbers to work with and the answer is complicated even when it's right so you question it lol. i think the reason why she uses achieve is bc it doesn't take very long for an online resource to grade your answers while it would take a while for her to actually grade ur homework. achieve is good for practicing while ur learning it but when u want to review for a test or the final it's always best to practice with the reviews she gives, the departmental problem list, and the copies of previous finals. she doesn't control any part of the final (it's departmental) but she prepares you well for it. her office hours often conflicted with my classes but she's totally chill with scheduling them if needed. when i could go there's often a lot of people in her office chilling, doing practice problems on the board, etc. and her room is small. it's fun to hang out there if you don't have a question for her ig and she's chill but it's prolly best if u schedule hours if u rly need it lol. it gets crowded in there especially before a test. she's v willing to help and from my experience she never treats u like ur dumb for asking a qn. i think she's great but remember i'd seen this stuff 1 yr before and i got a good grade, see what other profs are like too! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:MTH 1321 - Dr. Gwynn is genuinely one of the worst professors/teachers I have ever had. She is terrible about explaining concepts and has taught calculus in such a way that students who already took calculus in high school had trouble getting an A in her class. She assigned homework on Achieve that she regularly said was incorrect/didn't apply to her exams, and that she didn't teach that way. She didn't even major in mathematics and can't even explain basic concepts well. Instead of explanations she just says basically "do this except for all these exceptions and rules". She is horrible. Nice lady, would be better as any other professor. Don't take her unless you're just stupidly good at math, and if you're a non-math major, save yourself the headache and take another professor or do it over the summer. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:MTH1322 - Be prepared to work for your grade. From what I've heard Gywnn is one of the better calc 2 professors. She is definitely willing to help, although some feel she is degrading and isn't the best at explaining the concepts if you ask her to try to explain them in simpler terms. She is a very difficult grader on tests and states clearly that if you only study her review guide you will fail the exam. She does have a policy to drop the lowest exam grade with your average of the three exams (this saved me fr). If you have to choose her over the professors with thick accents definitely choose her! Try to get to know her she is more helpful with the students she knows and likes. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1309 - Here is an honest opinion/everything you should know. Number One: Gwynn is by far one of the best professors I have had for calc. I struggled a lot with understanding most concepts, and she was the first professor I had where I could genuinely understand it from her explanations. HOWEVER, there were a few topics that were not explained in the easiest way. I ended up just watching youtube videos or asking my friend in another class to explain it. Number Two: She is always open to having office hours which helped me tremendously. HOWEVER, again, a lot of people go to her office hours, making it hard to get one on one attention. It is honestly better to schedule meeting times outside of office hours if you are really having a hard time understanding something. For homework, the only thing you have to do is some Pearson problems; she will also give a few take home quizzes (which by the way all her quizzes are just reused homework questions so as long as you do the homework before the quiz you will get a 100). The quizzes are supposed to be an easy A, and since I always did the homework before quizzes, I was fine. Her exams are usually problems you've seen on the homework or in class with a twist. Her grading is a bit more harsh than most professors, but she does give reasonable amounts of partial credit. She also will go over exactly what you should be putting on exams during the two review class periods. I thought the pace of the class was perfect, a little slow sometimes for some units, but I would rather have it go too slow than too fast. Overall, I highly suggest taking her as she is a great professor, and also has a lot of outside experience in the business world; ex: she will help you improve resumes, LinkedIn profiles, etc. I loved having her class, and I recommend taking her. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:MTH 1309 - Okay so... although I did get an A in her class, it wasn't all butterflies and rainbows. Gwynn goes through notes very quickly (pre-print them) but if someone has a question, she will answer it for over 15 minutes. The way she explains concepts is VERY confusing and I know there is an easier way from going to SI. She preaches that going to her office hours will help, BUT she treats it as social hour and we barley get through 1 problem I had a question on. I felt that we didn't do enough practice or notes in class to actually understand the material. The homework on Pearson is simple, and the quizzes are alright (you can have all your paper notes for these). The exams are much more difficult than anything we practice so STUDY a lot! Overall, Professor Gwynn is an average professor, but if you are not confident in your math skills, take someone else so you don't have to drop. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1309 - DO NOT TAKE! She makes it seem like everything is so simple and runs through notes so fast! It was almost impossible to get an A on any of her exams. So many people ended up dropping the class towards the end of the semester. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1322 - Her class was very straight forward. Her reviews were exactly like her tests, and it really wasn't hard to get a good grade on the exams. Most of your grade is exam based, and the homework is all online. There are some parts of the course that require a lot of memorization, but besides that this course really wasn't too bad. She's the best professor I've had in the math department by far. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1309 - Gwynn is easily one of the best professors I've had at Baylor even though I don't like Calculus. She is very patient and explains Calculus in a simple way that you can understand it. There's a decent bit of homework due before each class and quizzes about once a week or once every other week, but the quizzes are open note so write out all your homework and bring it with you. The exams are hard and I studied a ton for them to get an A, but she tries to make it similar to the departmental final and will give you extra credit. I had to spend lots of time in her office to understand the material well, but from that I could tell she cares about her students. Because of her past experience, she also has lots of knowledge about how to get an internship and can help you do so. While this is the class I spent the most time on, I wouldn't ask for any other professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1322 - The tests are worth most of the class, and the way that she writes her tests make it impossible to succeed. I spent countless hours studying the material and ran through every step of every problem from every unit before her tests, and i still bombed every one of them. There is no reason why a professor should be tricking you and trying to fail you in the way that she does with her exams. The only reason i did not give all 1 stars is because if im being honest, she is a pretty nice lady who offers up plenty of her time to help you with questions you may have. However, you may learn the entirety of calculus 2 like the back of your hand and still fail out of her class. DO NOT TAKE. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:MTH 1309 - DO NOT TAKE HER!! I honestly believe she is the worst professor on Baylor's campus. Her tests absolutely do not match up with the reviews and are impossible to pass. I have mostly A's in every class and loved precal. She is not helpful at all and when i went to office hours she told me that she couldn't help me and that I should just pray and hope I pass the class. I wish I was able to drop the class but I did not have enough credits to do so. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1321 - This professor is completely out of touch with reality. She really believes she is the best ever but in actuality her tests don't match the material she covers in class OR the reviews, she backtracks in class and confuses everyone, and she took off points on tests for every little thing (even things she didn't teach). I had all a's in all my classes before this but did horribly in this class. Most of the class ended up dropping but I didn't have enough hours to do that. I went to all her office hours and reviews and studied all the time and nothing worked. Every test was a complete surprise. There is just no way to do well or be successful in this class. She's the worst professor I've had by far and I'm honestly surprised she's allowed to teach. - Grade In Class:D
Comments:1309 - I dropped out before the third test because I knew there was no way I was going to pass the class. Almost everyone dropped out and there's like maybe 10 people left who are all failing. Our class average after the first test was a failing score. Nothing on the tests is anything from the reviews she gives or like what we are taught in SI sessions. The tests are just extremely hard and I had a hard time learning anything. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:1321 - She was a great teacher! Super helpful and answered all of my questions in detail. She was always available to help, and even rounded my grade up at the end of the semester. Highly recommend. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:MTH 1322 - DO NOT TAKE GWYNN. She is a very useful teacher and does explain things very well during lecture and office hours, but her tests are tremendously harder than every other calculus 2 class. Her grading is horrendous. She takes off a tremendous amount of points for things so small it seems as if she’s targeting and making it her plan to fail everyone. I studied every day for multiple hours, along with studying over 24 hours for every single test, UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL, and would still end up with less than a 70. It is ridiculous. While her teaching made me get a better understanding of calculus, I would’ve rather gotten a good grade and not understand it. She also rushed the last units. Out of 8 lectures, we had to watch 4 of them online. She also promised us test grades at a certain time and she would take more than over a week longer to grade them. She cares about u learning, not getting a good grade. Even if you learn the material perfectly, and get every single problem right, I guarantee she will take off stupid, tedious points. Why she does it? I have no idea. All I know is that you SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS PROF. I’m saving you a great deal of time and energy, along with mental stress that she causes. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1309 BUS - she actually is the worst math teacher in history if I've ever had one. she doesn't teach and is confused half the time and doesn't know what to do. she really is not smart and when you don't understand stuff shes like OH THIS IS EASY when clearly you don't get it...pls don't take her at all costs. and the final at the end is so hard. also she takes off the smallest points for no reason and NONE of her tests are curved. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1321 - Dr. Dana Gwynn goes way over the top when it comes to her exams. They are multi-step problems that she teaches the absolute basics to in our lessons and never talks about again. The homeworks are the same way with 1-2, 1-2 hour homeworks every week with problems that don't end up on the exams. Looking at the simplicity of the final exam compared to the in-depth tests she gives that she grades harshly on, it's frustrating as a student. I had no previous high school calculus experience and her throwing us into the deep end with no preparation or hints of what to study is ruthless. She explains everything perfectly in office hours, but in class, "does everyone got that?", "Good", because no one responded in 2 seconds because we are still reading what she wrote. Smart people will do bad in this class, and she does not care. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:MTH 1309 - Honestly the only reason my grade is a B is because I'm just not a math person, never have been. But, Gwynn is amazing. She breaks down the lessons very well and is super willing to help you. If you are having trouble go to office hours, she will really help you out (and she really works to get to know you). Grade is broken down into homework (which you have unlimited attempts to get 100% on, although it isn't weighted much), quizzes that are all in class but open resource, and tests which are pretty similar to homework and quiz questions. If you have to take calculus definitely take business calc (it is much easier and watered down than the normal one) and DEFINITELY take Dana Gwynn. - Grade In Class:B
