*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1310 - She is a great teacher, knows a lot about the subject clearly. One downside was the amount of readings each week that go with the weekly reading quizzes and are on the tests. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1310 - Dr. Benton is a kind teacher, but her ratings suffer due to the difficulty of her tests. The overall workload of the class is quite low, especially if you already have some familiarity with the Bible, but in order to score well on the tests, you need to study the textbook well. Some of the material on the tests isn't even mentioned in her lectures; you'd only know it if you actually read the assigned pages from the textbook. Other than these tests, your grade is made up of open-book reading quizzes (one per week), class participation, and a one or two writing assignments. Overall a decent teacher, but again, READ THE TEXTBOOK before tests. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1350 - I would highly discourage from taking this course as it is way more difficult than it should be. Dr. Benton is a very nice teacher and has almost no workload. This is however ruined by the insane difficulty of the tests and the somewhat harsh grading on some of the assignments. There were multiple times when I was taking an exam and saw questions on the test that haven't even been discussed in class before. There were also times when we were tested on things that we hadn't even covered yet due to lack of time. The classes were also very long and boring. Without the help of the SI I would've had no clue what to study and focus on. However, Dr. Benton is a very nice teacher, and offered some extra credit on her exams and also let her weekly reading quizzes be open note. I would still highly recommend not taking this professor. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1310 - I had her over the summer term online. And as someone knowing nothing about Christianity, there is A LOT to learn. However, I enjoyed reading the text and watching her lecture videos. I spent about 3-4 hours per day (not weekend) for reading and watching lectures. She is really sweet as she would always comment on my reading assignments and give feedback on group discussions. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 3381 - Dr. Benton is a kind and approachable professor, and her class has moments that are genuinely enjoyable. I would recommend it to others, especially those interested in preaching and communication. However, there are some aspects that prospective students should be aware of. The course leans heavily into political themes, and those who do not share the same political perspective may find certain discussions uncomfortable or polarizing. Additionally, assignments are often introduced during especially busy times of the semester (such as Sing), and instructions may not be fully clarified until the day of—or just before—the due date. Grading can also feel inconsistent. Feedback is rarely provided, which can leave students unsure of how their performance is being evaluated. One of my biggest frustrations, however, was the reading requirement. While the readings are emphasized heavily, class lectures often reiterate exactly what was in the text, which made me question the value of the in-class instruction compared to simply reading the book. For a course that costs several thousand dollars, I expected more original teaching and engagement with the material beyond what I could get on my own. As a preaching class, I hoped it would focus more on practical application and interactive learning. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1310 - I feel like this is an average college course. There are 5-10 page nightly readings and a quiz every Friday over the readings from the week, but they are all open book and open note, and she dropped 2 or 3 by the end of the semester. All of the quiz and test questions come from the book. Her lectures are pretty irrelevant, so I just copied down notes from the slides to keep me from falling asleep. No technology except for the Friday Canvas quizzes and the 3 or 4 tests we had. A little bit progressive but honestly a super nice professor and is willing to help you!! ALSO THERE'S SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT IT'S CRAZY. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1310 H - I don't know why her ratings are so low. She is a really kind and welcoming professor. Her quizzes were open note (any paper resource, including the textbook) and you end up dropping like 3 out of the 15 depending on some other assignments and workload. Her tests are pretty easy, class average was like a 96 on one of them (this was an honors section, but still). There is a good amount of reading, but you can honestly skim it because the quizzes are open note. She also gives a ton of extra credit. Do the readings to the best of ability, go to the lectures and take notes, get some easy extra credit and there is no reason you shouldn't have an A. The lectures can be dry, but she tries to spice them up with discussions and activities. I think some people didn't like her because of her political/religious views, but I don't think you will agree with any religion professor. She never forced her political positions on anyone though, and was always respectful of your Christian beliefs. In summary, she's a good teacher take her class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Christian Scriptures - Dr. Benton is actually amazing, she may be one of my favorite professors at Baylor to be honest. Her quizzes are open-note and she grades very nicely on outside assignments. Her tests are difficult, but if you do the reading (or even don't do the reading but bring your textbooks to the quiz days) the quiz grades help level out lower exam scores. I made C's on several of my exams and still got an A in the class. For the quizzes, I recommend putting sticky notes in your bible and your textbook, or writing it in your notes (which you are also allowed to use) denoting exactly which pages and excerpts are assigned for that quiz so you can find them quickly. She also makes quizlets for each of the exams with terms that make up a decent portion of the test, so if you study those in addition to reading summaries of the bible excerpts, reviewing your notes, etc., you will likely make a good grade. Additionally, Dr. Benton is extremely understanding and allows for make-up quizzes, AND she gives a bunch of opportunities for extra credit. She also navigates controversial topics with grace and clearly works very hard to try and ensure no student feels alienated. Would recommend 1000000%. I'm taking her again for Heritage and even though I'm not religious I'm very excited about it. I think the negative reviews on here are just upset because they expected it to be a class they didn't have to study for. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:REL 1310 - Professor Benton is a very kind lady but a bit of a difficult teacher. Her tests are very hard if you don't know stuff before hand and have memorized the whole book. She teaches through topics very fast as if everyone has had biblical knowledge before hand. The SI has been more helpful because I actually learn more. Again she is a sweet lady but it is pretty difficult to pass the tests with an A unless studying for hours. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1350 - Professor Benton is an interesting teacher. Her entire course content is extremely confusing, with her tests being near impossible without putting insane hours into studying. There are two books required for her class atleast, with required reading before each class and she puts quotes on the test that you have to read to get. She also picks favorites and discards the rest of the class, leaving the rest of us to dry. She doesn't post her lectures and moves extremely quickly through them, if you get lost good luck getting back. The quizzes are very weird and you have to get to class early to complete them on time. She constantly runs over time and gets angry if you pack up to leave. Horrible teacher and there are a million better professors in the Religion department. Take another teacher if you can. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:REL 2480 - Dr. Benton is a very sweet and has a passion for teaching! I will say that some of her ideas are more liberal and progressive. I was also placed at a more progressive company for my internship through the class. This is something I wish I had known before taking the class. They typically do not place you at your home church or area you are familiar with- which I can understand. It definitely helped me learn and diversify what I was familiar with. However, again, very liberal and progressive. As long as you are prepared for that I feel like this will be a great class to take. She does care about her students and the class is pretty fun to take! Lots of interesting content and new ideas. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1350 - im not sure why her reviews are so low , she is super sweet and really cares about her students and teaching religion , i will say it is not an "easy" A but it is extrememly possible. if you do the readings , pay attention in class and go to her with any confusion you are guaranteed an A plus there is SO MUCH extra credit it's insane - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:REL 1350 - To be quite honest, I thought I was going to hate this class more than I thought actually did. There's pretty much no work outside of class except for 2 assignments that don't take much time. Her exams are all multiple choice, and if you pay attention in class and take notes they aren't too bad. There is alot of reading and there are reading quizzes every friday, but they are open book and open note so they are pretty doable. I never did any of the readings and I did fine on all the quizzes so take that as you will. Class itself is pretty boring it's just notes and her talking but if you find church history interesting then it's not too bad. There are definetely better professors than her, but in reality she's moreso in the 70s range rather than a low 60 (at the time of writing this). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Christian Scriptures - I do not know why these reviews seem to hate Prof Benton. She is extremely nice and her exams were relatively easy. She let us take our quizzes with open notes AND open book. Frankly, I enjoyed her class, and even after the semester she says hello when you run into her on campus. She cares about her students and teaches well. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Christian Heritage - Personally the worst professor I have had at Baylor university. Uncapable of being helpful to her students. Unimaginably lazy compared to the standard of professor at Baylor. The only possible way to do good in this class is if you are a religion major and enjoy having teachers who test your knowledge, but take no part in teaching it to you themselves. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:REL 1310 - Would not recommend, boring and there are much better professors for this class. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:REL 1310 - Would not recommend, there are easier and better scriptures professors. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:2480 - If at all possible avoid Benton. She clearly has an agenda while teaching this class. Any other professor will teach the normal curriculum, while she only focuses on one side of the political spectrum, ignoring any other opinions in the class. She states that the gospel may not be the only way to live your life, while emphasizing that Job may show that God could be a domestic abuser. The only opinion she has is that America is not great, she focuses on how Christians are seen as homophobic. The class is unstructured and a lot of the assignments had zero guidelines or rubric... unless a student went into her office and begged her for clarification. Two days before the final, she gave us a study guide and in order to answer all of those questions was TEN PAGES!!! Take Intro to Ministry with anyone else - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Christian Scriptures - I love this woman. She’s super sweet and not the type of religion teacher who is just going to talk about their personal faith and try to push that onto people. For Christian scrip, we have quizzes every Friday but they’re 10 questions and open book. She’s so helpful and very approachable. Sometimes she uses pictures from the Lego Bible and it’s super funny. The workload is alright, just some reading in the Bible and the ECS book but if you keep up with the reading, the quizzes are a breeze because you’ll know where everything is. Her exams are a little tough, BUT she has a quizlet for every exam which helps SO MUCH. There is no other homework than reading. We only had to write one paper the whole semester and it only had to be a page and a half long. You will need the ECS book for sure and personally, I just used my own bible instead of the NOAB and I didn’t struggle whatsoever. Her class is super interesting and yes her lectures can seem very long, but honestly it’s super worth it because you’re not getting a hard teacher. Other thing is she is kind of anti-tech so you can’t take notes on ipad/laptop so make sure to always bring a pencil and paper. Compared to other horror stories I’ve heard of Christian script teachers…she is by far not one of them. If you keep up on the readings, you’ll literally get an A+. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:REL - Love her!!! it's just her lectures doesn't correlate to her quizzes or tests. Now also bring the book to any quiz and read it before any of your quizzes. she gives you a good amount of leeway so use it! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:1350 - Notes aren't super helpful. Make sure you bring the book on quiz day since quizzes are open-book. Pay attention to the lists and headings for quizzes. Exams are not easy use her Quizlets. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1310 - She talks a lot but she is very nice and will help you get a good grade. There is a lot of group work in the class and the tests were straightforward from the quizzes. - Grade In Class:A
