*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:1300 - Professor Oropeza is pretty great. I don't understand the poor ratings for her class. I had her two years ago, and she made the Pandemics class super interesting and easy to follow. She's very organized and passionate about the subject. She was quick to respond to any email questions and offered suggestions on my essays to strengthen them. She made the class feel fun and engaging. Also, she gives occasional extra credit. My tip is to reach out to her at the beginning of the semester for any questions and to show her you care about doing well in her class. She is one of the best professors I've had. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - She does not deserve these bad reviews, she is so nice and so silly. You have two tests, all online, but they do tend to take longer except she actually teaches you the material that is on them, and they are all open note. You work on a research project all semester but only do a presentation in the end that only she will see. Very low key, as long as you show up and participate the class is a breeze. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - I really dont understand that bad reviews on here. She's actually a great teacher who teaches about really interesting topics. The only thing she did that annoyed me a little bit was make it unclear what are readings were in class. Other than that she was great and all are exams and quizzes were online with a lockdown browser (no webcam). All in all if you want a pretty easy and interesting 1300 HIS class then I would recomend her. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - I'm not sure why Dr. Oropeza has such bad reviews on here, because she is genuinely a good professor. Her lectures are interesting and her class gives you a different perspective on diseases in history. She does go over some "sensitive" topics in class, but you as a student HAVE TO BE openminded and not let your biases get in the way. We went over slavery, HIV/AIDS, covid, yellow fever, and influenza. She only had 2 exams each with 50 questions. They were both open note and like 10 of the questions would be word for word based off her slideshows. Definitely take your own notes too during lecture. She did have research assignments and reflections based off of readings in her class, so as long as you try, you would probably get majority of the points. Overall, you do have to put in the work for this class, but her class isn't hard at all. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - I don't know why her ratings are so bad. I went into this class being horrified for it but taking it was so easy. I loved how energetic and fun she is. The exams are all open note and take at home!! There are research papers but they're honestly not hard, especially because I have never written one before so it was so new but she is so good at giving feedback for the next one. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Very politically biased and swore a lot. Weird and confusing grading system. Showed us softcore g*y p*rn when we went over AIDS. Not awesome. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - don't take all the negative ratings too serious. honestly, i know ppl say there's a lot of work in the class, but it really isn't much tbh.. this was one of my better classes compared to my other stem courses. pretty easy to get an A in. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - Dr.Oropeza is a fantastic professor. There is a lot of work; however, if you do the job as you're supposed to, you will be fine. Something I enjoyed was on the first day of class, she let us decide if we wanted our grades rounded at the end of the semester or have extra credit opportunities. Since there was no textbook, we had to read a chapter from a book per unit. Many people did not enjoy this, but I did because it differed from my other classes. She is always available for office hours and replies to most of your emails. But my favorite thing was ALL EXAMS ARE OPEN NOTES TAKEN AT HOME!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1300 - TAKE HER!!! i literally don't know why her reviews are bad she's great. she is the most understanding professor ever and is so chill if you can't turn something in on time. if you need an extension all you have to do is ask and she will give it to you. if you go into her office hours she will help you so much. there are a lot of writing assignments but they aren't bad. every test is open note and online which is lit. def take her legit don't know why her rating is so low???? - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - So I know Dr.Oropeza has some rough ratings on here but I honestly really enjoyed her class! The Nitty Gritty: This class is broken up into 5% participation, 10% quizzes/activities, 30% exams (midterm and a final), 10% Reading worksheets (4 total), 5% annotated readings, 10% writing assignment drafts, 15% writing assignments, 15% research journals and reflections. The Quizzes are open note and draw directly from the lecture slides (so absolutely no issue to ace as long as you pay attention). The Exams are also open note and I had no issues acing the midterm (haven't taken the final yet though), both exams have a ton of pretty easy extra credit questions so definitely take advantage of those! (she asked us how many extra credit questions we wanted on our final lol). Workload: I'm sure the majority of complaints about Dr. Oropeza are probably the workload. Yes, this class is a gen-ed, but I feel the workload is pretty reasonable for what the class is (a history class). I think we averaged like one assignment a week maybe? The reading worksheets/annotated readings were my least favorite thing about this class, but as long as you start them early enough they really shouldn't take that long. We have like a 5 minute presentation on the public health strategies of a disease we choose at the end of the semester, but the workload/research is spread out really well over the semester. (although I wish we had a little more explanation on what the assignment was before we started research) Class time: Classes are primarily spent in lecture, although she usually gives us a break about halfway through. Yes, her lectures are long and her slides are word-heavy but she really tries her best to keep them engaging. She does an excellent job explaining the concepts we cover, and her bubbly personality keeps class fun! The Prof: Dr. Oropeza is definitely eccentric but I honestly loved her! She held plenty of office hours and was also available to schedule a zoom meeting pretty much anytime! Yes, she is very particular about how she grades the writing assignments but she gives pretty detailed feedback on all of them, so as long as you follow that you'll be fine. She is also super understanding when it comes to personal issues if due dates are giving you trouble, you really just have to talk to her and she will be super accommodating. Yes, we have some more difficult/unique discussions in class (race, biases, sex etc.) but they are all relevant to the material we cover, and the class would not be considering the full story if we didn't have these discussions. Dr. Oropeza begins each of these discussions with a disclaimer and encourages students who have an issue with them to speak with her. I know were a Christian university, but we are doing ourselves a disservice if we don't discuss all aspects (even the ugly parts) of history. Anyway, I really did love Dr. Oropeza as a professor! If you think the class even sounds remotely interesting I would highly recommend giving it a try! I am definitely ready to be done with the reading worksheets, BUT I think Dr. Oropeza makes up for it simply by what a sweet and knowledgeable professor she is! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - READ READ READ - I took Dr. Oropeza after looking at these BU Book reviews and figured I would take a chance on her since there were so few reviews. Trust me, I will never do that again. The amount of reading and writing you do in this class, you would think you're earning an english credit. On top of the amount of work you do, Dr. Oropeza expects your writing to be a very specific way except she will never actually communicate this way to you so you will spend the entire semester watching your grade hopeless drop because you keep getting 9.2/10 on all the assignments. On top of the workload, she make every child feel uncomfortable in the class and finds enjoyment in it. She will ask you to make a list of stereotypes about Mexicans and share it to the class, you will reading an article titled "The Lord is my Shepard and He knows I am Gay" as well as a whole lecture how how race is a social construct and be expect to read chapters out of books discussing how every disease is racist. She will force in class discussions over why men do not wear condoms or specific details of how men's prostates are checked. I spent more time on this class than I did any of my premed classes and that is saying a lot. DO NOT TAKE HER - take someone who actually teaches history and treats it as a gen-ed. If you're curious about diseases, this is not the class for you as majority of what you're learning is over highly controversial topics which she forces a skewed sense of Christianity into. Once taking this class, I talked to several other people who took her in past semesters and they agreed with me, so do not overlook this as someone who just had a bad experience. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Alrighty...so as you can see I dropped this course. Let me tell you why. Dr. Oropeza is very interesting and wants this a specific way. Her writing assignments had to be exactly what she wanted. The layout, the answers, everything. I was very confused on how to do so I did what any confused student would do... email their professor. Well, she replied but said she would talk about it the next class day. Come the next class day, she does not answer my question. So I ask in person this time, and her response was even more confusing. Overall, there was a lack of communication and I was not about to sit in a class and fail because the Professor would not help when I SPECIFICALLY asked for help. Save the trouble and weirdness and cursing, and take someone else. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:1300 - Dr. Oropeza is a very ...interesting character. She curses often and is super particular about what her writing assignments should include. She is nice but odd, especially when she cried over a knitted stuffed animal in class and showed us videos of voguing. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - There is a difference between nice and kind. Dr. Oropeza is nice, but she isn't kind to students who are struggling with the material. She also doesn't round grades, so if you end the year with a 89.97, it's the equivalent of a B in the class. She also is very picky as to what she likes her writing assignments to look like, so if you were taught a different way, prepare for Cs. Will never be taking this course again. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:HIS 1300 - Dr. Oropeza is a relatively nice person, but her lectures are just awful. Don't get me wrong, the course is super interesting, but she likes to try and pull little stunts and even cursed out my class because some of the dudes in the back laughed at people voguing. The course work isn't very hard. If you take this class, get ready for an *interesting* professor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HIS 1300 - Dr. Oropeza is nice but a bit awkward, but her lecture is good. Her section focuses on the history of pandemics in the US. The workload in this class is insane for a freshman level class. There are a lot of written assignments and a lot of readings. The course is basically half quizzes and tests and half writing. She is also very specific in what she's looking for in written work. She also has a research project on top of the other work. Overall she's nice and a good lecturer, but there is a lot of work. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1300 - Dr. Oropeza is a fantastic professor. She is very educated and passionate about the course. The workload is doable and will prepare you for future courses. Dr. Oropeza is very accommodating and understanding. She enjoys discussing work with students in order to help them improve. Additionally, if you pay attention in class and note when she says something is important, you will do very well in this course. - Grade In Class:A
